Mineral liberation data are routinely obtained for a wide variety of applications, including ore characterization and characterization of various metallurgical test products obtained in bench-scale laboratory testwork. Newmont Mining Corporation owns several properties in the Carlin Trend containing refractory gold ores. These ores are generally difficult to treat and have to undergo several processing stages for gold recovery. At Carlin?s Mill 5 operation, flotation is used to pre-concentrate some of these difficult ores to produce a sulfide concentrate to feed the roaster. It is of interest from a flotation perspective to be able to study the floatability of pyrite, arsenopyrite and arsenian pyrite, since these minerals all have different quantities of gold associated with them, and have to be recovered to ensure a successful separation has been achieved. In this paper, a detailed MLA study on several Carlin ores was undertaken on samples from flotation tests, using air or nitrogen as flotation gas, specifically to study the differences in floatability characteristics, which ultimately impacts overall gold recovery. Introduction A subject long debated but rarely resolved involves the interaction between the academic community and industry in the sponsorship and conduct of research. The subject is, unfortunately, too often treated as a controversy involving ethics and the profit motive. But, in fact, the two branches of society - industry and academia - are necessarily part of the same system. In the last 25 years, the realization has developed that research alone is not sufficient to bring about use of those results to benefit society through productivity gains and economic growth. The flow of events shown in Fig. 1 was generally believed to be the steps required for reaping the benefits of research. Today, research still has the very important role of creating new information or new ideas. However, it is recognized to be but one of many steps in a process that we now refer to as technological innovation. Charpie (1967) said, "Technological innovation is the driving force behind economic growth in the US. In this context, innovation means the process by which a new idea is successfully translated into economic impact within our own society, by providing better products, and simultaneously creating new jobs in the manufacturing of those products. Only after an investigation is put into sufficient use to have an economic effect, is it termed an innovation." One of the best depictions of the technological innovation process is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. These are adapted from Haeffner (1975), and modified by the Committee on Mineral Technology of the National Research Council (1981). Figure 2 identifies the many steps involved in the process. It designates a generalized form for interaction between the academic community and industry. Figure 3 identifies the steps in the "innovation activity" box of Fig. 2. Academia is generally responsible for developing of new knowledge and ideas, as well as maintaining and enlarging the collected body of scientific knowledge. Industry is responsible for developing new products, methods, and processes. Both institutions operate for the benefit of society, but under different driving forces. This study developed machine learning (ML) models for predicting rock formation reactive forces experienced by a hydraulic shovel bucket during excavation. To do this, rock formation in the form of muckpile was modeled as granular ball elements in three-dimensional particle flow code (PFC) using linear bonding logic. A typical field-size hydraulic shovel bucket modelled in AutoCAD was used to excavate the rock formation and the three-dimensional shovel bucket resistive forces required to cut through the rock formation were measured and recorded. The experiments involved different muckpile height, bulk densities, repose angles, and average fragment size. Six ML algorithms, artificial neural network (ANN), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), linear, random forest (RF), regression tree (RT), and support vector machine (SVM), were evaluated on their ability to predict the shovel bucket resistive forces. The input variables used for the prediction of the resistive forces were the muckpile bulk density, angle of repose, height, and fragment size. The results showed that the ML techniques are useful and reliable methods of predicting rock formation resistive forces based on the rock formation properties. This research is a preliminary step towards developing reliable models for accurate prediction of excavation forces/torques which could potentially enhance hydraulic shovel process automation.

Upgrading of a low-grade titanium slag (~55% TiO2) with high silica, calcia, magnesia and iron contents has been studied using sulphation roasting technique using SO2/air gas mixture followed by hydrochloric acid leaching. XRD analysis of the sulphated slag reveals the presence of kennedyite (Fe2O3. MgO. 3TiO2), rutile (TiO2), calcium sulphate (CaSO4) and calcium silicate (3CaO.SiO2) phases. The residue after leaching contains mainly kennedyite, rutile phases and free silica with traces of calcium silicate phase. Synthetic rutile that has about 83% TiO2 can be produced at the optimum conditions. Thermodynamic calculations give rational explanations of the obtained results.

If the particles produced and transported in your plant are as chunky as rough crushed coal or as fine as cement, there are probably several conveying and elevating systems suitable for your operation. The problem is deciding which is most suitable in terms of space, energy cost, allowable product degradation, productivity, and angle of movement. Each conveying and elevating method should be fit to the products it can handle successfully, to desirable economics, and to suitability for the overall operating scheme. Matching along these lines will result in selection guides that should be useful for many years, although design evolution is expected for the materials handling equipment involved. There are several common bulk material handling devices for moving solids: belt conveyors, screw conveyors, bucket elevators, chain conveyors, and en-masse conveyors/ elevators. En-masse conveyor/elevator equipment is commonly compared and contrasted with the other devices. These comparisons often involve en-masse versus all others. En-masse has developed into a versatile technique because the machines can move materials horizontally, vertically, or in closed circuit. Such machines unload, elevate, store, reclaim, and distribute materials-all without ancillary equipment except for chutes and gates. Bulk material can be carried, as with a belt conveyor or bucket elevator; pushed, as with a flight or screw conveyor; bumped, as with a vibrating conveyor; blown, as with a pneumatic conveyor; fluidized, as with a dense phase pneumatic conveyor; or by applying internal forces to it to induce "en-masse" flow. Conveying en-masse is analogous to the flow of a fluid in an open channel, and elevating en-masse is analogous to the flow of fluid in a pipe. In the case of a fluid, flow is caused by a differential in pressure. With en-masse movement, flow results from resistance to shear induced by the movement of chain and flights.

The PT Freeport Indonesia‘s Deep Ore Zone(DOZ) copper deposit is located in the province of Irian-Jaya, Indonesia. Currently, a block cave mine is being developed around this deposit. Production is scheduled to start in year 2000 and to ramp up to25,000 tpd by year 2003. The air quantity requirement for this mine is equal to 780 m3/s. To supply this quantity, the mine will require five centrifugal fans (one 450 and four 750 kW fans). This study summarizes the technical aspects related to the installation and commissioning of one of these fans. The fan was installed on the surface in a parallel arrangement with two others. It has a design capacity of 240 m3/s of air at 2.2 kPa of static pressure. The study presents the installation details from the underground shaft excavation and portal development through fan testing and commissioning. It also presents the results of a monitoring system that was installed to determine the fan duties.

One of the problems that arises in the early stages of the mine planning before the determination of the mining exploitation method is to predict what will be the recoverable ore reserves in tonnage, grade and metal quantity, if the select ion is based upon block grades. The estimation of these recuperation or recoverable functions can act as an important planning tool in what concerns the appraisal of the consequences of ore-waste discrimination of individual blocks in a selective mining operation. Estimation methods of all these functions are discussed together with cross validation tests using the available information concerning a preliminary drilling campaign accomplished during the exploration stage of an iron orebody located in the North of Portugal (Moncorvo Orebody).

The low potential hydrophobic state of pyrite in amyl xanthate flotation with nitrogen is of particular interest with regard to the N2TEC flotation technology currently being used for the recovery of auriferous pyrite at Newmont’s Lone Tree Plant in Nevada. The N2TEC system had been found to operate satisfactorily, but cyanide in the flotation mill water appeared to be responsible for a loss in pyrite recovery. This supposition was confirmed with laboratory experiments and a program was initiated to study flotation chemistry variables by electrochemically controlled contact angle measurements. Experimental results show that activation of pyrite in such cyanide solutions can be achieved more effectively with lead than with copper. Subsequently, based on these fundamental studies, significant improvement at the Lone Tree Plant was achieved by lead activation, in which case the recovery increased to expected levels. The effect of activator is particularly significant not only with respect to pyrite depression by residual cyanide, but also with respect to collector (PAX) consumption and the initial state of the pyrite surface. Each of these issues is being studied in detail and research progress is discussed herein.

Soil erosion is strongly related to soil hydraulic properties. Understanding how surface coal mining impacts those properties is important in developing effective management practices to control erosion during reclamation. Soils from undisturbed areas, roughly graded mine spoil, replaced topsoil before seeding, and revegetated areas at the Rosebud Mine in Eastern Montana were evaluated to determine impacts on soil hydraulic properties. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to determine soil hydraulic properties, including particle-size distribution, organic matter content, and saturated hydraulic conductivity. WEPP simulations and risk analyses were performed on the soil hydraulic property data to determine the impacts of changes on soil erosion. The hydraulic properties of the soils in each representative area have significant differences due to the mining and reclamation practices at the mine. WEPP simulations show that the potential for soil erosion increases due to mining activities disturbing the soil. WEPP simulations also indicate that the potential for erosion may return to pre-mining levels over time with effective revegetation practices.

"A reliable supply of non-energy raw materials is a precondition for the functioning of the European economy. In line with its importance, the issue of raw materials supply has become more prominent in the past years, especially owing to turbulent raw material markets. However, these turbulences are not due to depletion of the geological resources but to a missmatch of (expected) supply and (expected) demand, with several interacting factors influencing the markets both from the supply as well as from the demand side. A recent evaluation, published in June 2010 within the framework of the EU Raw Materials Initiative, sought to bring together these two sides of raw material markets and asked the question "which raw materials are critical for the EU?" Herein we present the methodology used by the Ad-hoc Working Group on Defining Critical Raw Materials and the results obtained, complemented by results from the study "Raw Materials for Emerging Technologies"."

Water contact angles of talc powders were determined from the values of the heats of immersion measured using a flow microcalorimeter. The results were used to calculate the contact angles using a rigorous thermodynamic relation. In the present work, the calculation was carried out using the temperature coefficient of the contact angles determined experimentally using another method. The results obtained in the present work on several different talc samples are compared with those obtained using other methods.

This National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study was conducted to focus future research on the most significant electrical problems in the mining industry. Data from 1,926 mine electrical accidents (including 75 fatalities) that occurred between 1990 and 1999 were studied. Coal and metal-nonmetal operator- and contractor-reported data are presented. All data used in this analysis were MSHA closeout data, except 1999, which were preliminary data. Electricity was the 4th leading cause of death reported in mining despite being the 14th leading cause of injuries. Electrical shock, not electrical burns, caused 70 of the 75 electrical fatalities reported. About one-half of mine electrical accidents and fatalities occurred during electrical maintenance. Suggestions for mitigating electrical hazards are proposed.

Traditional risk quantification methods provide little information on the sources of risk, and tend to produce static over-conservative evaluations, which do not account for changes in the performance of the project. Capital investment decisions for large mining projects require of more complex risk evaluation models, that include the value of flexibility and the different risk levels associated with uncertainty on project variables (price, grade, dilution, production rates, among many other). In this context, Real Option Valuation (ROV) methods have proven potential to quantify the risk associated with such variables and integrate alternative scenarios and management strategies into the evaluation process. In this paper, a risk quantification model is developed, which successfully quantifies the risk associated to dilution, as a function of production rate. This model is then validated in a case study on the Chuquicamata Underground Mining Project.

The aim of this joint work between the French Coal Board and the Paris School of Mines is to be able to practically model the behaviour of a transverse drum cutting rock with picks. First a theoretical approach leads to the concept of cutting curves, giving forces and torque against penetration per drum revolution. Then experimental evidence, from full scale and reduced scale testing, validated and confirmed the theoretical shape of the curves. Finally practical applications are given, to improve the design or use of a shearer (or continuous miner). A micro-computer program is being developed to predict the cutting performances of a machine in certain conditions.

At one time explosives were the only economical means of rock tunnel excavation. Except in relatively long tunnels in the right rock explosives are still the cheapest means of rock excavation where they can be used. Today the most economical means of rock tunnel excavation is increasingly not the choice of the contractor. A good part of our work is for public agencies in urban areas and the public today is increasingly less tolerant of the disruption caused by our efforts. Owners in many cases have to direct their engineers to write specifications which severely restrict noise and vibration levels during construction. Sometimes specifications allow drill-and-shoot for starter tunnels only or even eliminate powder by fiat. Recent advances in the use of explosives such as sequential firing have made blasting more palatable to the public but are not enough in all situations. Thus the roadheaders on construction projects. In recent work I have seen the Alpine Miners, a Paurant Miner and the Robbins Mobile Miners used in several rock formations and now believe this type of equipment has a place in the tunnel constructor's choice of equipment. Rudy and I have not attempted to present a formula for choosing the best alternative excavation method in any given case because, of course, of the variables involved. We have simply tried to describe our experiences on a particular project and hope our observations will be of some value to tunnel constructors.

Heap and valley leach operations rely on solution collection piping placed within the heap to enhance both solution recovery and to assist overall solution management. The most common piping used in leaching operations is solid or perforated High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe and Corrugated Polyethylene pipe (CPE). These pipes are widely used because of their low cost, ease of installation, durability, and flexibility. The typical recommended maximum design depth of burial for HDPE and CPE pipes is on the order of 30 meters (100 feet). However, ore heap heights at many facilities exceed 30 meters and some are now approaching 180 meters (600 feet) in height. At very high ore heap heights, the stability and performance of HDPE and CPE pipes becomes a critical issue for leaching facility design and operation. Failure of solution collection piping can lead to poor solution recovery, high hydraulic heads on the liner system, and in some cases, unstable ore slopes due to high solution pressures near slopes. This paper presents a review of methods that have traditionally been used to evaluate pipe stability under high normal loads. A common shortcoming of these methods is the inability to account for beneficial effects of ore arching around pipes and the time-dependent creep (stress relief) behavior of polyethylene (PE) materials. A new analytical approach is developed and presented which includes the effects of ore arching around pipes and creep of PE materials. The results of the new approach show that PE pipes will deform under high heap loads, but can remain stable and functional. Pipe stability is shown to be dependent on the type of pipe backfill and initial backfill compaction. The new approach represents a useful tool for designing applications for PE pipe under high normal loads.

Big Creek Tunnel 2, constructed in 1912, is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, east of Fresno. It is horseshoe and circular shaped with a 3.6m (12ft) diameter and extends 6.6km (4.1mi). Historically, tunnel performance suffers from highly jointed rock and low cover. In 2003, leaks were observed surfacing through outcrops of highly jointed graniodiorite, and subsequently investigated by visual inspection, joint mapping, ground penetrating radar, and a water-tracing survey. Several grouting targets were identified as a result of these investigations. Cement grouting was used to fill void spaces, broken rock and open joints expected to exist behind the concrete and steel liners. Project work consisted of grout hole drilling through the existing concrete liners, and grout placement through squeeze packers supplied by standard grout hose and portable grout plants. Grout pressures were typically 20?30 psi. Grouting was completed in 16 days with a total of 1,550 sacks of Type II/III grout placed at the three likely leak source areas. No grout was observed exiting the tunnel and the leak was stopped.

Over the past decade, a substantial effort has been made to improve the air quality inside enclosed cabs of both underground and surface mobile mining equipment to reduce respirable dust exposures to the equipment operators. As part of this effort, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, (NIOSH) completed a comprehensive laboratory study which determined the significant factors for cab filtration and pressurization systems. From this information, a major underground mining equipment manufacturer designed a filtration and pressurization system which was incorporated into the enclosed cabs of its equipment. A long-term evaluation was performed on the effectiveness of this filtration and pressurization system to improve the air quality in the enclosed cabs of two different pieces of equipment, being a face drill and a roof-bolter machine, at an underground limestone mine. This long-term evaluation demonstrated a significant reduction in dust levels comparing outside to inside cab respirable dust concentrations. During this evaluation, a modification to remove one of the filters on the roof-bolter machine simplified the design without sacrificing the system?s efficiency. Testing using particle count instruments performed during non-production time periods on both pieces of equipment indicated Protection Factors greater than 100 when comparing respirable-sized dust particles inside the enclosed cab relative to outside.

Automatic setting regulation is a technology that allows balanced crusher performance matching minute changes in feed material characteristics. The system makes it possible to utilize the crushers fully at all times. It also continuously and completely compensates for manganese liner wear.
