PrennThe Chairman in opening the session highlighted the current situation in the United States of America where some 85 to 90 per cent of all mining (except for coal) is done by open pit methods, and where some 40 per cent of the coal is mined by open pit. The South African industry is, of course, dominated by the deeper level underground gold mines; however, with the aid of an extensive open-pit technology developed in other countries, South African companies arc continuing to explore possibilities of open-pit exploitation of base mineral, coal and diamond deposits. Several successful ventures are already in operation at Phalabora, Optimum Colliery, Kimberley and elsewhere, and South Africa is undoubtedly benefitting in this regard by drawing on the experience of others.The papers of this session were therefore particularly pertinent, particularly when viewed in conjunction with those presented at an earlier South African conference devoted specifically to open pit mining.Two themes dominated the discussion which followed presentation of the three papers at this session. The first related to the practicability of using the reported techniques as a tool for management, and their acceptability as such to mine management. This was, of course, not peculiar to this particular session, but rather the major point of debate over the entire conference.The second theme concerned the reliability of the initial drill hole data on which any open-pit design must necessarily be based. This gave added emphasis to the problem of practicability, for no management is likely to accept an elaborate pit design unless confidence can be placed in the ore reserve assessment.In noting these two features of the discussion, it should be remembered that all the three papers dealt largely with design and pre-planning; there was an unfortunate lack of papers or discussion on the subject of controlling the day-to-day mining of open pits, and this is an area where the potential impact which can be made by the computer is even greater.In introducing his paper, Mr D. A. Phillips pointed out that it was concerned only with optimization, and that it therefore assumed, firstly, an adequate subdivision of the orebody into ore blocks characterized by grade, rock type, structure, etc., and, secondly, an acceptable forecast of costs and mineral prices in order to generate a suitable profit matrix. However, programs dealing with these problems for both massive, disseminated and stratiform ore bodies are available to Roan Consolidated Mines. The method of optimization which he had described had been used on a region split into 28 000 blocks, for which the program used three hours of C.P.U. time on an IBM 360/40 computer. The computer design had provided a three per cent improve¬ment on a normal design of the same area."

The President: We are very fortunate tonight to have with us Professor Franz Pawlek, Head of the Institute of Extractive Metallurgy for Non-Ferrous Metals of the Technical University, Berlin. In him we have a representative from one of the few mining and metallurgical universities in Western Germany, since I understand there are only three such universities, Berlin, Aachen and Kassel. The latter is represented by Mr Schmelling who has accompanied Professor Pawlek here tonight. The famous Freiberg University is on the other side of the Iron Curtain, and so is Breslau. Professor Pawlek was born in Vienna many, many years ago, and he obtained his diploma and then later his Doctor's Degree in metallurgy, in Vienna. For four years he worked for an Austrian company, and then moved to Berlin and joined the A.E.G. Company. After the war, he joined the Institute, which had been very heavily damaged, and he was closely associated with the rebuilding and re-equipping of the faculty of mining and metallurgy. He has written numerous papers, and I am sure we are going to have a most entertaining and interesting evening's talk. The President: Gentlemen, I am sure you would like me to thank Professor Pawlek for his talk tonight. My knowledge of pressure leaching is particularly small, limited to a friendship with Professor Frank Forward, to whose original work at Fort Saskatchewan reference has been made by Professor Pawlek. I enjoyed Professor Pawlek's talk, and as a mining engineer I managed to follow most of the argument, mainly because it was so lucidly presented, aided by these informative slides; but I never realised how complicated a problem this process can be. I am taking the liberty of asking Professor Howat to express our thanks from a more technical point of view. After Professor Howat has spoken, and possibly posed a few questions, I shall throw the meeting open in the hope that various people here will be prepared to ask questions. I see one or two gentlemen who have been over in Canada studying pressure leaching lately, and I hope they will ask questions, informally if they so wish. We will not record the full proceedings of this meeting tonight, in the hope that there will be more questions of a general nature. Thank you. Professor Howat: Mr President, Professor Pawlek, I am afraid I am up here under false pretences, because the matter that I thought I was asked to do was to propose a word of thanks, and I usually thought that a word of thanks was taken at the end,-however. It is always very intriguing to think that for all these thousands of years that have passed, pyrometallurgical processes have provided the main methods of extracting metals from their ores. Within the last 100 years, hydro metallurgical processes have become of increasing importance, and it is quite interesting to speculate that the largest single hydrometallurgical process is the one that we operate in this country,-which was devised by two distinguished countrymen of mine,-namely, McArthur and Forrest.

There is a set of settled ideas in the field of the mechanics of rock mass joints, that need a deep revision, after the last experimental works of several authors. In this paper, this theme is approached under several viewpoints, like the following ones: the essential influence of the mating or mismatching of rock joints on their strength (different strength models are applicable to these two situations, one leading preferably to normal scale effects, and the other to inverse scale effects); Patton's model is a bad formulation of the joint strength, whenever there is a dilation effect in the slidings (actually, the essential consideration of the amplitude of the roughess isn't made by any limit equilibrium model, like Patton's model); the joint strength increases as the width perpendicular to the sliding direction is reduced (previous works of other authors suggested the independence of the strength on that width); the reduction of the anisotropy of the roughness, as the sample symmetry and sample dimensions increase; there is no scale effect in the discontinuity mechanics, if there is no roughness heterogeneity; when only the same roughness and undulation orders are involved in the tests, shorter samples have larger peak displacements and lower shear stiffnesses than larger samples (usually, the contrary is admitted). For all these reasons, there isn't an easy correlation between the small scale tests and the natural large joint scale. Only "in situ" large scale tests have some representativeness. All the above mentioned questions are correlated to each other. Contribution by W. Assibey-Bonsu I congratulate Mr N.O. Lotter on his paper. There are two main aspects of the paper on which I would like to comment. One aspect is his review of P. Gy's sampling theory under the heading 'Sampling the mill feed' (p. 153). The other aspect relates to his reference to one of our papers1 that was published in the Journal (p. 152). Raise and shaft drilling, a continuing development RICHARD J. ROBBINS* (Visitor) Although the past decade has witnessed many improvements in large-diameter drilling machinery for the boring of raises, there is still room for improvement both in operational use and in the design of equipment. Some of the available machines are described and illustrated, and it is concluded that the possibilities of new systems and designs should continually be re-assessed since the factors that determine their feasibility, such as bore diameter, cutter costs, and penetration rates, are changing rapidly.

In considering the available reserves of coal, the author points to the importance of improved recovery, and defines three extraction ratios: the geological extraction ratio (or exploitation factor), the economic extraction ratio (or mining factor), and the geometrical extraction ratio (or volumetric extraction factor). He discusses the factors affecting each of these ratios, and concludes that, although geological factors cannot be considered in isolation from technical and economic factors, the geological extraction factor is the most significant criterion of whether the best use is being made of coal resources.

Changes in the explosion behaviour of mixtures of coal dust, methane, and air when exposed to different energy sources are discussed. Changes to the lower explosive limits, minimum ignition energies, and rates of pressure rise when the same hybrid mixture of coal dust, methane, and air is exposed to ignition sources which are either spatially extended or spatially concentrated, are examined. A diagram is presented from which coal-dust loadings and methane presence can be determined which are below the lower explosible limits, and stated as a safety factor.

Most of these concentrates are exported to be custom-smelted in overseas smelters, but the modern tendency is for tin-mining countries to establish their own smelters.

Surely, it is not coincidence that the economic and political changes have occured simultaneously? South Africa, by virtue of its infrastructure and technology, is strategically placed to develop the potential of Africa's mineral wealth. In this address, I give my personal views on the ability of the mining industry to participate in the wider mineral resources of the African continent.

The process flows of the three flotation circuits at the concentrator of the Black Mountain Mineral Development Company (Pty) Ltd are described. Because of the complexity of the circuits and the associated reagent regime, the plant is equipped with a comprehensive range of control equipment. The different process-control strategies are discussed, and the modifications that have been necessary to the stabilizing control loops in the copper, lead, and zinc flotation circuits are shown in detail. It is concluded that the control strategies have continued to bring about benefits and improvements to the process.

A system of artificial support for shallow mines is described, analysed, and evaluated. The system can be designed rationally to support a predetermined overburden load, and tests have shown that the design theory gives accurate predictions of strength. The support system, consisting as it does of two basic materials, reinforced granular material and reinforced cemented material, is flexible and can be varied to suit changing requirements of height and load. The system of preloading to the design load by jacking off the roof ensures that the walls are both stiff and prooftested.

A short review is given of the effects of corrosion fatigue on the materials used in pressurized water-reactor vessels. Selected topics such as testing procedures, test data, and mechanisms in simulated environments are discussed. The main fact that emerges is that most of the data on the growth of fatigue cracks reside below the ASME X1 1980 High-R 'Wet' design-code lines, Le. they fall within that specification. Finally, some recent advances in the understanding of the corrosion-fatigue behaviour of such materials in pressurized water reactors are highlighted.

This paper gives an account of the development of a plant for the differential flotation of mixed sulphide ore, special reference being made to the separation of copper and zinc sulphides. The uniqueness of the geology, mineralogy, and metallurgy of each complex ore-body is stressed. Consideration is given to the scale-up of laboratory data, and to some of the factors involved in the design of milling and flotation plants for this type of ore. Process control and development are discussed, as are the human requirements for the optimum operation of a concentrator.

A 10-year program to integrate crushing and screening models into daily flowsheet design practice has proven successful. A Circuit Analysis Program (CAP) is used worldwide to design and evaluate new and existing crushing flowsheets. To gain user acceptance of CAP and maximize effectiveness, model development, simulation flexibility, ease of use, and developing international access are key issues. These issues have been resolved effectively resulting in flowsheet simulations to assist in justifying increased capital investment. CAP is presently utilized in Canada, United States, and South Africa with intentions to expand to Europe and Asia.

Although online free cyanide analysers are widely available and used in gold leaching operations worldwide, reliable automated free cyanide concentration control is not consistently achieved in many of these operations. Effective cyanide concentration control is complex owing to amongst others, the long residence times and ore feed variations. Model Predictive Control (MPC) has been proven to provide superior cyanide concentration control over traditional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control, leading to savings in operational costs and reduced leachable gold losses. In the first example reported in this paper, MPC has improved control of the free cyanide concentration by keeping it within the required range 73% of the time during testing, compared to the previous PID controller that only achieved this target 30% of the time. This represents a 143% improvement. Another example demonstrates a 22% reduction in cyanide usage as a result of using MPC. MPC functionality is rarely available on the programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and control systems installed at gold plants, hence it is implemented on a personal computer (PC) networked to the cyanide analyser and plant infrastructure. Mintek has developed an embedded MPC that installs into the Mintek Cynoprobe analyser, adding MPC functionality without the need for additional PC and network infrastructure, reducing installation costs. This allows plants to minimise their expenditure on additional infrastructure while gaining the benefits of superior MPC technology for multiple cyanide dosage points. This paper will present results showing that the embedded MPC performs as well as Mintek’s existing PC-based StarCS MPC controller, making it a viable alternative for infrastructure-constrained gold plants. This paper will review some methods used to manage geotechnical risk at Damang Pit Cutback. The pit depth is designed up to 250m with push back on the eastern and western walls of the existed and depleted Railway Cutback (RCB) pit. The geotechnical design was presented by SRK Perth, focussing on the optimisation of the bench face angle which finally evolved with ?steep slope strategy?; 24m at 800 and 24m at 750 on the eastern and western walls respectively. The east wall was designed strategically to optimise the proximity of the tailings dam to the final pit crest of the push back. The pit has experienced failure in the weathered profile transgressing through the transitional material into the fresh rock at different location of the east wall since development in July 2005. To ensure stability and to minimise ore loss, the east wall has been redesigned using 700 batter angles and reduced berm width of 4m compared to 800 and 8.5 berm width of 24m bench height. The paper will also discuss how slope failures to the east wall had been sustained, managed and monitored to enhance production. Emphasis is placed on slope management at Damang which includes the principles of wall control blast, visual inspection, slope depressurisation and the state-of-the art of slope monitoring using Autoslope automated prism monitoring. Future slope monitoring is considering the use of 3D Laser and Radar to provide early warning so that evacuation could be effected. The intension is to provide mine personnel the means to identify risk areas during mining activities.

The challenges of noise emission in the mining industry are well known. These challenges are exacerbated by the increasing trend towards mechanized mining, and there is general consensus that an effective industry-wide Buy Quiet initiative (BQI) will significantly assist in reducing noise-induced hearing loss by minimizing noise at its source. In its endeavours to improve the health of workers, the MOSH Noise Team has facilitated development of a proposed strategy and structure for a BQI. Extensive consultation with stakeholders resulted in support for the initiative. The MOSH Noise Team was advised to solicit the contributions of consulting mechanical and electrical engineers (CM&EEs), whose support is viewed as critical for realization of the initiative, since elimination of noise at source is an engineering challenge, and most procurement standards and specifications are set and managed by engineers. A workshop with CM&EEs and their representatives, as well as group environmental engineers (GEEs), confirmed the urgent need for the initiative and provided valuable insights. The workshop used obstacle based planning techniques to identify the factors on which the success of this BQI will depend. Most potential obstacles to the implementation revolved around proper scoping, leadership commitment, and companies? adherence to the initiative. Lack of involvement by the relevant stakeholders and economic issues were also identified as potential obstacles. Delegates at the workshop felt that the successful implementation of the industry-wide BQI, will depend on the mining industry addressing the specific obstacles. The most critical and urgent issue was identified as the formation of a properly constituted industry-wide BQI task team that includes representatives from critical stakeholder groups and which is mandated and empowered to drive the initiative.

The evaluation of stress distributions and deformations in the vicinity of tabular mine layouts has been carried out routinely for many years using the displacement discontinuity boundary element method (DDM). In this approach, mine layouts are approximated as irregular shaped planar cracks (or slits) where the ?width? of the crack, corresponding to the excavation height, is assumed to be negligible compared to the in-plane, lateral dimensions. Early implementations of this approach have employed square element tessellations with constant displacement discontinuity component values. This is generally restrictive when considering the analysis of irregular pillar layouts or the intersection of fault planes with excavations. This paper describes a general revision of this approach in which triangular or quadrilateral element shapes are introduced in conjunction with higher order variations of the displacement discontinuity shape functions. This facilitates an accurate evaluation of detailed stress and displacement components close to excavation surfaces and allows the investigation of local damage and failure behaviour associated with particular geological structures such as weak parting bands or weak layers. A method to embed these features in an efficient and accurate multi-level solution scheme is described. This formulation can be extended to allow the analysis of shallow-depth pillar layout problems, facilitating the assessment of the interactive response and stability of shallow depth pillar layouts. A simple deformation model is introduced to facilitate the assessment of pillar failure and bursting potential in shallow mine layouts. The computational techniques described here have been implemented in a computer code called TEXAN (Tabular EXcavation ANalyser) and are illustrated by the simulation of a particular multiple reef pillar mining problem in a shallow depth platinum mine.

In any mining enterprise, the extraction of the ore from the orebody is of vital importance. This activity is stoping. The gold mines of the Witwatersrand and its extensions in the Klerksdorp, Welkom, and Evander areas form the most extensive goldfield in the world. This address reviews stoping technology and improvements in this technology since the end of the Second World War. Although the reefs that make up the Witwatersrand orebody are uniquely extensive, they are not suited to mechanized mining. This is due to a number of factors such as the depth of the orebody, its narrowness, and the hardness and abrasiveness of the quartzite forming the orebody. The most notable improvements in stoping technology have been brought about because of our beter understanding of rock-engineering problems. This has resulted in beter layouts, stoping geometry, systems of aleviating rock stresses, and support systems. It has enabled the industry, at ever-greater mining depths, to maintain and even increase productivity. These improvements, based on rock engineering, have significantly reduced the accidents due to rockbursts. There are many diferences between today's stoping and that practised forty years ago. Panels are shorter, concentrated mining has superseded bench mining, and the support systems are certainly better. Yet the face scraper is still used extensively, as are pneumatic rock drills. Some innovative stoping systems that have given rise to improved productivity are discussed. Explosives technology has shown spectacular advances during the period under review. Sadly, our local industry has had little to do with this research and development, but has been most adaptive in using the new products on offer.

Right now the South African mining industry is a high-profile, vital contributor to the nation just as it has been for the past one hundred and twenty-six years since the discovery of diamonds-perhaps even further back if the mining of copper, iron ore, tin, and other minerals in earlier centuries is included. The media in 1995, as has been the case over the years, bear testimony to the complex interactions between the industry and its stakeholders: shareholders, government, employees and their unions, training and educational institutions, researchers, markets, the public, and suppliers of goods, services, and infrastructure. The pressures and challenges that the industry continues to face can be summarized as safety and health, competitiveness, and social and environmental responsibility. There are no surprises here. The motivation for the industry to perform well in these areas is clear; the focus I intend to bring is on the most important tool required for success-that of good mining engineering. This Address sets out - to review the mining aspects that have been discussed in South Africa during the first five years of the decade, a discussion that shows the return of the country as an important mining forum, confirms the role of professional institutes and associations in the development of mining engineering, and brings current relevant issues into focus - to highlight the vital role of mining engineering in the industry, and to identify priorities for the remainder of the decade - to provide the prospective mining engineer, the mining-engineering student and trainee, and the practising mining engineer and mine manager with a better appreciation of the mining-engineering discipline. institutes and ssociations
