The UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? freeze lining concept combines wall cooling with carbon and graphite refractories of higher thermal conductivities to ?chill? the refractory lining by transferring heat from the refractory lining. Effective sidewall water cooling, together with the efficiency of the heat dissipating conductive refractories, lowers the temperature of the lining to below that of the molten process materials. This causes a layer of slag and process metal to solidify or ?freeze? and form a protective ?skull? which completely coats the refractory hot face. Once formed, the slag skull insulates the refractories, reducing heat loss and protect the lining from erosion, chemical attack, thermal shock, and other stresses. The result: extended life and greatly improved refractory performance. The Ilmenite smelting process depends on the presence of a solidified slag skull to protect sidewall refractory material from chemical attach by molten slag. No known refractory material is able to withstand this corrosive material. To date, UCAR has not applied their Chill Kote ? technology in the ilmenite smelting industry. This paper revolves around the results obtained from conducting an ilmenite smelting campaign on a 500kW DC open-arc furnace with a UCAR designed refractory system. The purpose of this test was to establish the effects such a lining has on refractory wear and the reduction-smelting process. Proper thermo-couple management enabled the authors to monitor lining wear for the duration of the campaign. Prior to the pilot-scale campaign, modeling work was completed to evaluate the feasibility of applying UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? technology to ilmenite smelting furnaces. The successful operation of a pilot-scale furnace equipped with the UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? lining as well as concise modeling suggest that it should be a viable option to consider for an industrial-scale furnace.

A new copper-molybdenum flotation technology developed for a certain coppermolybdenum ore is introduced. We achieved copper-molybdenum bulk flotation in lowalkali conditions. Locked-circuit test results showed that the bulk concentrate contained 21.05% Cu and 1.10% Mo, with copper recovery of 87.37% and molybdenum recovery of 77.07%. For the copper–molybdenum separation process of the bulk concentrate, we use a new depressant, BK511, to replace the traditional sodium hydrosulfide. We achieved copper–molybdenum separation through one rougher, nine cleaner, and two scavenger processes. The results of locked-circuit tests showed that the molybdenum concentrate contained 46.19% Mo and 0.75% Cu, with molybdenum recovery of 93.80%; the copper concentrate contained 21.50% Cu and 0.069% Mo, with copper recovery of 99.92%. This new technology overcomes disadvantages of using large amounts of lime, sodium hydrosulfide, and other reagents in traditional copper–molybdenum flotation.

Mintek conducted test work to study the effect of media wear when using Mintek’s Milling-in-raffinate technology. The grinding media consisted of high-chrome and ceramic balls. The tests were conducted using a laboratory 5L 316 stainless-steel rubber-lined mill. Magotteaux supplied the high-chrome and ceramic balls. The raffinate was synthetically prepared using a typical Cu/Co (2.2 g/L Cu, 3 g/L Co) composition. The milling rate, media wear, mill, leach extraction efficiencies, gangue acid consumption, and residence time were studied. The tests indicated that the high-chrome balls had a higher corrosion rate than the ceramic balls. The ceramic corrosion rate was lower than 0.1 mm/y. The highchrome balls performed better during the leach stages with faster milling time, higher leaching efficiencies for both Cu and Co, lower gangue-acid consumption, and lower residence time

n this study, silver and palladium nanoparticulate inks with different metal-binder ratios were screen-printed onto a paper substrate. The printed layers comprised the metal nanoparticles and an ethylcellulose binder. The layers are not typical metal composites due to the low concentration of binder and high porosity. The electrical sheet resistivity of each particle concentration was measured, and the data fitted using the scaling law of percolation theory and the general effective media (GEM) equation. The percolation parameters, i.e. the percolation threshold and the critical exponent, for each system were determined from the fits and compared. The percolation threshold for the palladium layer (39.8 wt%) was lower than that found for the silver layer (44.9 wt%). The critical exponents determined for the palladium and silver layers were both lower than the universal value for three-dimensional percolation systems. Microscopy observations indicate that the difference in the percolation threshold for the two layers can be attributed to variations in their microstructure.

Flotation is a complex physical chemical process in which flotation reagents play a vital role in valuable minerals recovery and concentrate grades. This study examines the performance of new generation AECI Mining Chemicals (previously named Senmin) collectors. They were developed to enhance the valuable minerals recovery and flotation selectivity by tailoring the collectors to target specific valuable mineral species present in an ore and thus create added value for concentrators treating PGM ores. The case study was conducted on a Platreef ore, where batch flotation tests were performed and the concentrates were mineralogically characterised for PGE and BMS using QEMSCAN. Further batch flotation testwork was conducted on Merensky and UG2 ores from various localities in South Africa to confirm the trends observed for Platreef ore. The results have shown that there is a strong correlation between PGE mineral type and AECI Mining Chemicals collector type - clearly demonstrating that one reagent type does not fit all flotation applications. In this study, the efficacy of Providencia vermicola KUBT-1 in the leaching and beneficiation of Agbaja iron ore was evaluated under varying conditions of temperature, ore particle size, and pH. Agbaja iron ore is a Nigerian low-grade ore containing about 43%–52% iron and a high amount of gangue materials, including phosphorus (1.4%–2.0%) and sulphur (0.12%). The study was organised in triplicate in shake flasks with 48 samples. One millilitre of washed cells of Providencia vermicola KUBT-1 suspended in normal saline at 0.5 McFarland standard (108 cells ml-1) was introduced into each flask containing 50 g of sterilised ore in 100 ml of bioleaching medium, and the samples incubated at room temperature for eight weeks. The levels of upgraded iron, mobilised sulphur, and phosphorus were determined by atomic absorption and ultraviolet spectrophotometric analyses, respectively. Results showed that a particle size of 0.8 mm was optimal for iron upgrading and sulphur mobilisation while 1.0 mm ore size was optimal for phosphorus mobilisation. Up to 89.60% of the iron was upgraded while phosphorus and sulphur were mobilised, leaving residual values of 0.223% and 0.02%, in the ore, respectively. The organism produced best beneficiation results at a pH of 2.5 and a temperature of 3ºC. Correlation analysis with the Pearson’s correlation model showed a positive correlation between iron upgrading and sulphur-phosphorus removal (r =1.000, and r =0.967), respectively. These results present Providencia vermicola KUBT-1 as a promising candidate for large scale leaching and beneficiation of Agbaja iron ore.

The paper will place into perspective the contribution that platinum makes to the South African economy. It will use statistics from official sources, namely the Department of Minerals and Energy, the Department of Customs and Excise, the South African Reserve Bank and Statistics South Africa. Surprisingly few people are aware of these statistics, especially Supply and Usage tables, published by Statistics South Africa, and trade statistics, published by the Customs and Excise division of the South African Revenue Service. The paper will therefore contain a concise explanation of input-output tables and supply usage tables, as well as the derivation of gross domestic product and an outline of the System of National Accounts, of which Input-Output Tables and supply and usage tables are components. GDP is a commonly used, but poorly understood, measure of the wealth of an economy. The paper will explain the methods used by SSA to calculate this indicator and its place in the System of National Accounts (SNA). South Africa exports almost all its platinum production (87.5% in 2002). Exports are a final demand, as opposed to intermediate demand from secondary industries, and therefore do not enter the value-adding process, which is the essence of GDP. By definition, therefore, platinum on its own is not a major contributor to GDP. The platinum industry does, however, have an impact (known as the multiplier effect) on other sectors of the economy. The paper will explain the meaning and derivation of these multipliers, using a model based on an Inverse Leontief Matrix.

The formula developed by Salamon and Munro in 1967 has been used for the past 22 years in the design of bord-and-pillar workings in South African collieries. This paper re-assesses the formula In the light of Its past performance and examines the effect of mining method on coal-pillar strength. An account is given of the extension of the formula so that it can be applied beyond the empirical range for which it was derived, and the advantages of the extended formula (the squat-pillar formula) are described.

A survey was conducted so that the degree of corrosive, erosive, and abrasive attack on material-handling systems in the mining and mineral-processing industry could be assessed, and so that the areas of research and development that would be relevant to the needs of the industry could be determined. Of the 59 different mines that were invited to participate in the survey, 41 returned completed questionnaires, giving a return rate of 70 per cent. The total number of completed questionnaires amounted to 45. An analysis of the results shows that attack by erosion or abrasion is considered to occur more often than attack by corrosion. However, al three types of attack must be regarded as significant problems within the mining industry, since 52 per cent of the participating mines reported pump failures due to the inability of the materials of construction to withstand the operating conditions, and almost 90 per cent reported piping failures due to corrosion (22 per cent) or to erosion and abrasion (78 per cent).

Flotation is one of the most important processes in the copper production industry. The copper grade in the concentrate is a pivotal indicator of the flotation process performance. However, it is difficult to achieve real-time measurement through hardware sensors. Based on the production data provided by an industrial operation, a novel soft sensor based on multi-layer perceptron (MLP) is proposed for effective monitoring of this pivotal indicator. The proposed soft sensor uses the nonnegative garrote (NNG) to perform global variable selection for MLP, while a local search (LS) approach is incorporated to improve the model presented by NNG. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has higher prediction accuracy and better model simplicity than other algorithms. Furthermore, the variables selected are consistent with the field experience, and the developed model can provide reference of feedback control for the optimisation of the process. Surface tension of mold flux is a key factor affecting optimum casting conditions. A thermodynamic model was developed to determine the surface tension of mold flux containing fluoride based on the ion and molecule coexistence theory of slag structure and Butler’s equation. The relationship between composition and surface tension was investigated by this model. Results indicated that the calculated values showed good agreement with literature data, and the average error was 8.19%. The surface tension value of the CaO–Al2O3-based mold flux was larger than that of the CaO– SiO2-based mold flux. The surface tension in a multi-component system decreased with increasing contents of SiO2, CaF2, and Na2O, which are considered surface-active components. This trend was more significant in the CaO–Al2O3-based mold flux.

Pneumatic flotation cells are high-intensity flotation machines with rapid kinetics, resulting in short residence times. Examples include the Jameson, PneuFlot and ImhoFlot cells. These cells do not use impeller-like mechanical cells. Rather, the air and pulp are mixed in a continuous stream of high fluid velocity through a downcomer or venturi to disperse the air into fine (approximately 0.5 mm) bubbles and maintain particle suspension. Froth wash water is often used to enhance concentrate grade, minimising recovery by entrainment. With the growing application of these types of cells, not only in cleaner stages (their traditional use) but also in pre-flotation and scalping duties, there is a need to predict their performance more accurately for circuit design and optimisation. No widely accepted model for pneumatic flotation cells is available and their metallurgical performance is often scaled up from laboratory and/or pilot plant testing by assuming fixed values for metal recovery, concentrate grade and concentrate percent solids. This paper describes a new approach to simulate pneumatic flotation cell performance and presents case studies demonstrating its applicability. Generally, filter media used in filter presses have a limited operational life. Besides mechanical damage, there is a growing deposition of fine particles with increasing filtration cycles, the so-called blinding, inside the filter cloth. The resulting decreasing pore diameters not only affect the efficiency of the filtration process itself by increasing the filter medium resistance, but also make it more difficult to regenerate the filter press between the individual cycles, e.g. leading to an insufficient cake discharge. Since tailings filtration requires handling of large process flows containing a significant fraction of particles in the lower micrometer range, an investigation into media rejuvenation is of interest. The current application of copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) separation inhibitors is often associated with large dosage, high toxicity, environmental pollution problems. In order to solve these problems, a light sensitive Cu-Mo separation inhibitor LS（light sensitive inhibitor，abbreviated to LS） was developed. In this paper, inhibitory performance, photodegradation rule, and acting mechanism of LS were studied. The subsequent test results showed that, compared with traditional inhibitors, LS has shown comparative advantages, with lower dosage and good inhibiting effect. A series of flotation tests with LS as inhibitor were conducted on a Cu-Mo concentrate. A locked-cycle test showed that a molybdenum concentrate containing Mo 49.88% and Cu 0.6%, with 93.23% molybdenum recovery and a copper concentrate containing Cu 29.92%, with 99.99% copper recovery can be obtained. The photodegradation performance of the reagent was investigated under 365 nm, 254 nm and sunlight irradiation. The degradation of the reagents could be completely achieved by irradiation of three wavelengths of light. However, with the different wavelength of irradiation light, the degradation rate is different, the time required to reach 50% degradation rate being 3 h (254nm), 4 h (solar light) and 6 h (365nm) respectively. The inhibition mechanism on chalcopyrite was studied. FTIR study showed that LS could be adsorbed on the surface of chalcopyrite by chemical adsorption, which could enhance the hydrophilicity of chalcopyrite. Ultraviolet adsorption tests indicated that the adsorption capacity of LS on chalcopyrite surface was greatly affected by pulp pH value, and the proper pH value was 5-9. "Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in South Africa received official recognition after the change in government in 1994.The Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) recognized the sector as a vehicle for social and economic development for historically disadvantaged South Africans (HDSAs) who had previously been excluded from participating in the mainstream economy. Having recognized the ASM sector, government introduced several interventions and support structures to foster the development of ASM, to encourage participation of HDSAs, and to address challenges facing the sector. The objective of this paper is to assess the progress made, with particular regard to challenges in the sector. The paper focuses on the policy requirements that were deemed important for the growth of the ASM sector by the White Paper on Minerals and Mining Policy (1998). These can be collated into five categories: access to mineral rights, access to finance, access to markets, technology and skills, and institutional support. The paper provides a review of the support interventions, their intended roles and impact on the sector, and identifies existing gaps and possible ways of dealing with the challenges. There is a need for research to assess the real impact of these past and existing interventions on the ASM sector to draw lessons for future development.IntroductionThe significant rise in artisanal and smallscale mining (ASM) activities worldwide has led to many countries recognizing the sector. ASM takes place in approximately 80 countries (World Bank, 2013). It is estimated that the sector employs between 20 and 30 million people around the world (Buxton, 2013). This compares to between 3 and 3.7 million in 1999 (International Labour Organization, 1999). ASM activities are widespread, occurring mostly in developing countries in Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Central and South America (World Bank, 2013). There has been a significant increase in the number of people participating both directly and indirectly in the sector and this is expected to continue given the socio-economic realities of most developing countries. High levels of poverty and unemployment and growing inequality continue to be largest problems facing the majority of developing countries today. The ASM sector plays an important role as a source of livelihoods, particularly for those residing in rural areas with limited economic opportunities. In the majority of countries, the recognition of the ASM sector was driven by its increasing contribution to socio-economic development through job creation, poverty alleviation, and rural development. In response, a number of intervention strategies were introduced in support of the sector to address its negative impacts and to increase its potential benefits."

Flotation concentrate originating from the Asarel-Medet porphyry copper mining and processing complex in Bulgaria has been subjected to regrinding using a Ro-Star mill; the effects of which on the downstream metallurgical behaviour are discussed. Particularly the effect on the liberation degree was studied through an optical microscopy and MLA-SEM automated mineralogy. On the other hand, copper selective flotation of the reground bulk concentrate was realised to evaluate the anticipated metallurgical improvement. Process parameters such as involvement of prior hydrocycloning and variation of collector dosage have been evaluated. Within a two-minute residence time inside the Ro-Star mill, an improved liberation degree of the copper bearing minerals has been observed. As a consequence, enhanced copper recovery and selectivity against pyrite was noted. It has been found that in order to guarantee efficient flotation of the resulting ultrafine particles, a modified flotation regime (i.e. changing collector suite and dosages) should be followed. Today’s mining operations require fast reporting and rapid rescheduling based on updated information. An automatic mine scheduling system could not only quickly reschedule but also propose alternative solutions. To avoid the financial and physical risks associated with testing such a system directly in operation, it could be first evaluated via discrete event simulation models. This would offer a safe environment to evaluate different operating rules and algorithms. In this study, this is achieved by integrating automatic scheduling software with a discrete event simulation model.

"SynopsisNew technologies used to manufacture high-quality components, such as direct laser sintering, require spherical powders of a narrow particle size distribution as this affects the packing density and sintering mechanism. The powder also has to be chemically pure as impurities such as H, O, C, N, and S causes brittleness, influence metal properties such as tensile strength, hardness, and ductility, and also increase surface tension during processing.Two new metal powder processes have been developed over the past few years. Necsa produces zirconium powders via a plasma process for use in the nuclear industry, and the CSIR produces titanium particles for use in the aerospace industry.Spheroidization and densification of these metal powders require remelting of irregular shaped particles at high temperature and solidifying the resulting droplets by rapid quenching. Spherical metal powders can be obtained by various energy-intensive methods such as atomization of molten metal at high temperatures or rotating electrode methods. Rapid heating and cooling, which prevents contamination of the powder by impurities, is, however, difficult when using these methods for highmelting- point metals. For this reason plasma methods should be considered.Thermal plasmas, characterized by their extremely high temperatures (3000–10 000 K) and rapid heating and cooling rates (approx. 106 K/s) under oxidizing, reducing, or inert conditions, are suitable for spheroidization of metal powders with relatively high melting points. Thermal plasmas for this purpose can be produced by direct current (DC) plasma arc torches or radio frequency (RF) inductively coupled discharges. In order to obtain chemically pure spheroidized powder, plasma gases such as N2, H2, O2, and CH4 cannot be considered, while Ar, Ne, and He are suitable. Neon is, however, expensive, while helium ionizes easily and it is therefore difficult to obtain a thermal helium plasma at temperatures higher than 3000 K. Therefore argon should be used as plasma gas. Residence times of particles in the plasma region range from 5–20 ms, but this is usually sufficient as 7–8 ms is required for heating and melting of titanium or zirconium metal particles in the 30 µm size range at 3500 K. In this study the melting and spheriodization of titanium powders was investigated by DC non-transferred arc and RF induction plasma methods. Titanium aluminide of composition Ti-47.5 at.% Al was prepared by melting titanium and aluminium of commercial purity with additions of precious metals of 0, 0.2, 1, 1.5 and 2 at.% content. The microstructure, hardness and oxidation properties were assessed. It was found that at 47.5 at.% Al, the microstructure of plain TiAl alloys was duplex, consisting of duplex lamellar grains and ? grains. The lamellar grains consisted of alternating lamellae of ? (TiAl) and a2 (Ti3Al), with overall aluminium content in the range of 43?47 at.%. The ? grains had a aluminium content above 50 at.%. The addition of precious metals to the TiAl alloy resulted in the formation of a new phase, with a high precious metal content, occurring mostly in the ? phase, without any major change to the microstructure. Increasing the amount of precious metals resulted in an increase of the new phase amount, at the expense of the ? phase. The hardness of the different alloys was around 300HV10. Overall, the research has shown that addition of precious metals to TiAl resulted in a slight increase in hardness and a significant improvement of the oxidation resistance. This shows that alloying TiAl with precious metals, at the addition levels investigated, does not alter the mechanical properties very much, but improves oxidation resistance.
