"A computational model of rock blasting is being developed to examine the blasting problems associated with in situ oil shale processing. This model, however, will also be useful as a design tool for the traditional problems in rock blasting. The model includes fundamental treatment of both shock-wave propagation and the accumulation of brittle fracture in the rock. As a result, the model accurately predicts the degree and extent of fracturing as functions of design parameters. The model has proven useful for making parametric studies and for evaluation of alternate blast designs. This paper demonstrates the use of the numerical model to simulate the fracturing induced by the detonation of a vertical explosive column near a bench. The fracturing induced by three differentexplosives indicate that (in the chosen geometry) the most efficient breakage is done by a column of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil mixture (ANFO) used with a toe charge of aluminized ANFO. There was too much unfractured rock left when ANFO was used alone; aluminized ANFO used for the entire explosive column caused excessive fracturing. A final case involves ANFO used alone to fracture a different rock type. This case points out that in a different rock type, the ANFO will not leave excessive unfractured rock."

AEL has been developing electronic detonators continuously since 1986. It launched its first system for opencast mining in 1993, and now has two distinct product lines. The path has not been without great difficulty, but the determination to persevere was always buoyed by the strong encouragement of customers who experienced the transformed blasting results, as well as a clear vision of the enormous intrinsic value of the concept. The path of growth to dominant global supplier is traced through the separate application channels of coal stripping, quarrying, massive mining, opencast mining and narrow reef mining, to the first allelectronic detonator demolition blast in June 2001. Reasons for the slow coming to market of this highly desirable concept, which often coincide with reasons for the demise of various other systems, include the difficulty of safely mating electronics and explosives in a low cost environment; the extreme difficulties of achieving proper connection under mining conditions; the rapid rate of evolution of the technology, and the safety concerns raised by various accidents and incidents along the way. ED.s are now established as the way forward and are set to displace other systems in all serious applications. There is place for both programmable and pre-set delay systems.

Recruiting and retaining students in the explosives industry is becoming increasingly important each year. With no undergraduate degree in explosives engineering currently available in the United States, it is from other industries and degree disciplines we must recruit. The 2014 annual ISEE conference saw the first anonymous online survey distributed to members of SEE student chapters of the International Society of Explosives Engineers. The survey contained questions about future job and career plans, ideal job placement, expectations of salary and current academic degrees. The purpose of the survey was to determine what these students expect or require from a career in the explosives industry, and their current path to pursue this. This information can help steer recruitment activities and job offers for graduating students. The success for both student response rates and interest from the industry has allowed space for a yearly update of this survey. This paper provides the data from a second, restructured, online survey distributed to all student members of the International Society of Explosives Engineers, globally. Understanding the main incentives for a student to accept a graduate position as an explosives engineer can help us, as an industry; position ourselves to remain competitive in recruiting against other major degree disciplines.

Public perception is a significant challenge facing the explosives industry. The public often perceives that its needs and interests are in direct competition with those of blasting companies’, leading to conflict between corporations and the community. This misunderstanding lends to unnecessary political and regulatory hardship, and ultimately, social discontent. Although individual corporations implement strategies to address conflict, many of these techniques are insufficient. Consequently, stakeholders resort to expensive litigation. If blasting companies could reduce or eliminate the volume of judicial disputes, valuable resources could be re-directed to more productive activities.

A recent forum of mine operators revealed a continuing strong interest in alternative methods of freeing rock. A Rand Corporation report lists a continuous mechanical machine that would replace drilling and blasting as a priority for mine operators. The Du Pont "Detaline" nonelectric initiation system utilizes a low energy detonating cord. It is compatible with conventional detonating cords and shock tube downlines as well as nonelectric in-the-hole delay caps. "Detaline" millisecond surface and in-hole delays offer a great degree of flexibility in developing effective delay patterns for improved fragmentation and reduced vibration. All components are easily assembled in the field.

In past years, the usual justification for underground mining of limestone has been the depth of the overburden, perhaps 100 feet thick or more. At our Okolona Quarry in suburban Louisville, Kentucky, the overburden is usually shallow -- it averages 8 to 10 feet in thickness. However, in July 1980, we began development of an underground limestone mine on that property which also includes surface mining operations.

The concept of optimum fragmentation in surface mining operations, i.e. the degree of fragmentation to which corresponds the lowest overall associated costs of drilling, blasting, loading, haulage and crushing, was developed more than thirty years ago. Recent field investigations using novel technologies, which have been completed by ICI Explosives Canada and by others, indicate that this ultimate goal of optimum fragmentation is closer to becoming reality.

Hole size affects many factors which directly influence fragmentation in the muckpile and hence, the cost effectiveness of the entire operation. These factors include production capability, explosives and accessories efficiency and usage and drilling accuracy. In addition, hole size should be chosen to suit the geological conditions. The paper concludes that the optimum hole size is generally the largest that can be used commensurate with production and environmental considerations.
