"The high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) is a relatively new comminution technology that is gaining popularity for providing energy efficient solution to hard rock mining operations. A significant barrier to increased adoption of HPGRs is the present requirement for large amounts (excess of 2 tonnes) of sample for pilot testing, which may not be possible for most early stage projects. Three methodologies have been developed at NBK Institute of Mining Engineering at the University of British Columbia that may be used for sizing design optimization of HPGR circuits. All three methodologies use a MTS pistonpress to simulate HPGR comminution. These tests are capable of providing information regarding energy consumption, energy breakage relationship, reduction ratio, and product size distributions. In a period of slow economic development, these methodologies are critical to allow the industry to cost effectively understand the operational benefits of HPGR implementation. This paper examines previous test work done at UBC, as well as the development of an HPGR and piston press database for use in sizing and budgeting of HPGR circuits.INTRODUCTIONCurrently, the mining industry faces several challenges due to falling commodity prices and escalating costs. This has applied pressure for operations and projects to reduce costs and improve project economics. In addition engineering and metallurgical budgets have shrunk as companies try to conserve cash. Improvements and optimization of milling and comminution circuits is one area project economics may be significantly improved. By considering alternative comminution technologies such as the high pressure grinding roll (HPGR), energy operating costs may be greatly lowered. Many have begun to implement HPGR crushing as an alternative to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills, including KGHM and, Sierra Gorda, and Freeport Mc-MoRan’s Cerro Verde operation. However, implementing new technology for companies with little or no HPGR experience may not be practical. An operator must consider both feasibility and economics of a circuit. Currently, consideration of the HPGR requires expensive pilot scale testing for which large sample sizes are needed. In addition, few laboratories are equipped for running pilot scale HPGR test programs. Furthermore, the results of pilot HPGR testing are dependent on the quality of the sample, which cannot represent variations across a deposit. In contrast, ball mills and SAG mills can be sized using the Bond Mill Work Indexes that require a small amount of sample which enable a number of different geological blocks to be tested to allow engineers to have a complete understanding of how the comminution circuit will perform for the life of mine."

"The mechanical properties of RSR anode alloys (lead-calcium-tin, 009+ and lead-strontium-tin) were investigated as a function of time with an objective of developing lead anodes for use in high temperature electrolytic processes such as in copper liberator cells and in cobalt and nickel electrowinning. At a temperature of 70 oC, the mechanical properties of rolled RSR lead-calcium-tin (PbCaSn) alloy currently used in copper electrowinning decreased gradually while the mechanical properties of rolled RSR lead-strontium-tin (PbSrSn) decreased relatively quickly and stabilized at low strength levels. Cast PbSrSn started off as the weakest alloy but its properties remained stable with time. Rolled RSR 009+ anode alloy showed improvement in ageing properties over the other alloys tested. However, its mechanical properties did not stabilize in the study timeframe of 284 days. Further investigations are planned to study the effect of alloying elements on mechanical properties of RSR 009+ anode alloy over several years as a function of time at 70 oC. The mechanical properties will be evaluated to determine the time at which they stabilize. Comparative plant trials with rolled RSR PbCaSn and RSR 009+ will also be performed in copper liberator cells and in cobalt and nickel electrowinning tankhouses to determine their mechanical and electrochemical performance at temperatures of 65-75 oC.INTRODUCTIONLead-based alloys are the primary anodes used in the electrowinning of copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt and manganese from sulfate-based aqueous systems. Lead anode technology has evolved over the years migrating from pure lead and lead-antimonial alloys to the present day PbCaSn alloys for copper and PbAg and PbCaAg alloys for zinc electrowinning (Prengaman, Ellis and Mirza, 2010). It has also migrated from cast to rolled microstructures in search of improved mechanical properties and higher corrosion resistance. Although great strides have been made in the development of new lead anode alloys and production processes for lead anodes to be used in copper electrowinning, the industry still has some unresolved issues. These relate to the necessity of having higher mechanical properties especially for the lead anodes in liberator cells in copper electrorefining and for cobalt and nickel electrowinning as these tankhouses operate at temperatures of 65-75 oC compared to 40-45 oC in case of copper electrowinning."

"The past 14 years have brought an increased awareness of environmental problems. Surface mining for mineral aggregates has been one o f the issues which ha s sparked fierce controversy and debate. Various level s of government, industry, and the public have engaged in an unending battle for adequate planning, regulation, and rehabilitation of pits and quarries. Agreement has seldom been reached and, as a result, few standards, guidelines or policies have been established, or enforced province-wide.Surface mining ca uses a number of environmental problems including noise, dust, water table disturbances, aesthetic degradation, increased traffic, and health and safety hazards. These problems are particularly serious in urbanizing area s, where people are exposed to the mining operations. Associated with the operational phase of surface mining are the issues generated by the multiplicity of abandoned pits and quarries which dot the countryside. These large, gaping, often dangerous waterfilled holes are a blight o n the landscape, and represent a misuse of land.The environmental problems connected with pit s and quarries are compounded by the fact that accessible reserves of mineral aggregates are being lost through the process o f urbanization. In addition, restrictive zoning at the municipal level is restricting access to even more aggregate rich land. This results in the paradox that the very urbanizing process which creates the demand for aggregates is rapidly reducing the available supply. These problems have stimulated the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources to call for a province-wide program of inventory, assessment and planning for the protection o f high-quality reserves in Official Plans. These proposals have met with strong opposition from municipal leaders, who are jealously protecting their autonomy.Environmental management education is a prerequisite for all parties involved in pit and quarry planning, regulation or rehabilitation. To this end the following bibliography of selected articles with attention given to the Ontario experience, should provide helpful information on these topics."

The writer presents a concise summary of eleven recent discoveries made in the Maritime Appalachian area, with suggestions for fur the research. This information may prove helpful to geologists working in other fields and to students contemplating further avenues of research in mining geology and exploration. INTRODUCTION THIS paper is not intended as a research study on the subject, but i. merely a brief review of eleven discoveries that have been made in the Canadian Appalachian area. Furthermore, this is not a critical analysis of the merits of any one geophysical method, but it is an un-prejudiced observation of how these discoveries were actually made and what techniques were apparently most fruitful. Canada is a world leader in uranium exploration, but many deposits are located in remote regions making exploration targeting challenging. Novel approaches are needed to detect the presence of large-scale ore-forming systems and to vector toward mineralization. Boron is commonly used as a key pathfinder element associated with sandstone/unconformity-hosted and basement-hosted uranium deposits in the Athabasca Basin, but the genetic relationship remains uncertain. Alteration assemblages containing boron geochemical anomalies are commonly spatially-associated with – and possibly coeval with – uranium mineralization. Boron is commonly found in tourmaline minerals but in some portions of ore deposits the host mineral for the anomalous boron remains cryptic. Boron coordination chemistry within alteration haloes can better constrain boron host mineralogy, provide insight into the nature of the boron-uranium relationship, and thus has the potential to better constrain targets for exploration. Synchrotron-source X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy is a direct, element-specific analysis that identifies boron coordinated in both trigonally- (BO3) and tetrahedrally-coordinated (BO4) forms. This makes XANES uniquely suited for identifying the geochemical hosts for boron that may be related to hydrothermal ore forming processes. XANES spectroscopy was conducted on whole-rock assay powders from uranium deposits across the Athabasca basin containing boron concentrations ranging from <10 ppm to >10,000 ppm. XANES directly identifies the relative amount of trigonally- (BO3) and tetrahedrally-coordinated (BO4) boron in these complex mineralogical mixtures. Our work suggests a link between boron and uranium that is likely related to the unique physiochemical characteristics of ore bearing fluids that may provide a unique vector to mineralization.

Heavy rainfall and typhoon oftentimes cause the collapse of hillslopes across mountain roads. Disastrous consequences of slope collapses necessitate the approach for predicting their occurrences. In practice, slope collapse prediction can be formulated as a deterministic classification problem with two class labels, namely ?collapse? and ?non-collapse?. Nevertheless, due to the criticality and the uncertainty of the problem, evaluating the collapse susceptibility of an area is a challenging task. This study proposes a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI) approach, named as K-Nearest Neighbor Based Bayesian Classifier (KNNBC), to deal with slope collapse assessment. In the proposed model, Bayesian inference is used as a framework to achieve probabilistic prediction of slope collapse. Meanwhile, K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) is employed as a density estimation technique. Equipped with probabilistic outputs, the K-NNBC is able to yield predictions with different levels of confidence and diminish misclassified cases. Experimental results point out that the proposed model is very helpful for decision-makers in slope collapse assessment and disaster prevention planning.

This paper reviews the basic reactions of the blast furnace and the open hearth furnace, and then discusses the quarrying and sizing requirements of the limestone feed for each. Particular emphasis is placed on the lime-stone at Irish Cove, now being mined under an agreement between Scotia Limestone Limited and Dosco Steel Limited. The drilling and blasting operations are described, along with loading and haulage, plant flow, water supply, power supply and transportation facilities.

"The conversion from an electrochemically reactive grinding media (forged steel) to a more electrochemically inert alloy (high chrome white iron) not only reduces the wear rate of the grinding media, but also has an impact on the grinding chemistry. Typically the grinding chemistry becomes more oxidising, with less reducing Eh values and more dissolved oxygen in the pulp. There is also a decrease in the EDTA extractable iron, which is an indication of the change in the media corrosion. These changes are indicative of alterations in the surface chemistry of the minerals that the operator is trying to separate. For porphyry copper ores the changes in the pulp and surface chemistry not only affect the copper sulphide minerals, but also impact the iron sulphides (i.e. pyrite and pyrrhotite). Generally, with more oxidising pulp chemical conditions during grinding there is an increase in the oxidation of the iron sulphides which renders their surfaces hydrophilic, thereby depressing flotation. This leads to improved selectivity for copper sulphides against iron sulphides.INTRODUCTIONPorphyry copper deposits are the dominant source of copper that is mined today to satisfy global demand. These style of deposits typically contain one percent copper mostly as chalcopyrite, but may contain other copper bearing minerals (for example, bornite, chalcocite, azurite, malachite), small quantities of pyrite and quartz. Porphyry copper deposits also contain economically significant quantities of gold, silver and molybdenum. Interestingly, the majority of the world’s porphyry copper deposits are concentrated along tectonic plate boundaries (Figure 1)."

Commercial deposits of sodium sulphate are harvested from alkaline lakes that are widespread throughout semi-arid southern Saskatchewan and adjacent southeastern A lberta. Concentration of sodium sulphate occurs in undrained basins under semi-arid conditions. The process may be largely subsurface, wherein spring seeps feed basins associated with buried (preg/acial) river valleys. "The magnetic separation removal rate of pyrite could be improved effectively by increasing the susceptibility of pyrite. The electromagnetic characteristics and absorption response performance of high-sulfur fine coal were studied in strengthening the susceptibility of pyrite. In the process of treating the sample through the microwave, electromagnetic energy could be converted into heat energy due to dielectric loss and magnetic loss. The RL(dB) was evaluate the performance of absorption response of coal. The microwave improved the susceptibility was in ultra-high frequency region, which is the most natural resonance. The absorption fine coal to microwave was strengthened and microwave energy was improved by adding the magnetite powder with double loss characteristics as the microwave absorber. The dielectric properties and permeability characteristics of the fine coal trend were investigated by maxing magnetite powder. The microwave absorption in different coal thickness was surveyed through the reflection of energy loss.INTRODUCTIONMicrowave desulfurization is one of the most important research directions (Haque, 1999; Makul, Rattanadecho, & Agrawal, 2014; Su, Tang, Zhang, Jing, & Bai, 2014). The working principle of microwave absorption response can be briefly described as the interaction of the sample with microwave energy, which will result in the microwave energy converting into heat energy loss (Keangin & Rattanadecho, 2013). For specific samples, the polarization effect includes multiple polarization mechanisms(Meikap, Purohit, & Mahadevan, 2005). Different polarization mechanisms have different occurrence time and dominant mechanisms. Meantime, energy consumption will be occurred during the process of polarization effect (Chelgani & Jorjani, 2011; Rowson & Rice, 1990) . The absorption of microwave energy in the fine coal is a process of electromagnetic response (Znamenácková, Lovás, Mockovciaková, Jakabský, & Briancin, 2005). Microwave transfers the electromagnetic waves into the heat energy by microwave dielectric loss and magnetic loss for achieving the absorption of microwave energy in the treatment of samples (Lee, Kim, Kim, Chung, & Kim, 2004). The additive magnetic medium is Fe3O4 belonging to microwave energy absorber of double loss medium (Uslu, Atalay, & Arol, 2003)."

A general outline is given for the determination of copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, lead, cadmium, bismuth, manganese, uranium, molybdenum, vanadium, sulphate and fluoride by polarographic or amperometric methods in a variety of ores or metallurgical products. The detection of oxygen in gas mixtures by an amperometric method used as a safety device is also discussed. Introduction I N this paper, a general outline will be given of the polarographic and amperometric methods used for the chemical analysis of various ores and metallurgical products in the Chemical Analysis Section of the Extraction Metallurgy Division of the Mines Branch. The methods to be discussed will be confined to those based on the use of normal D.C. polarography and will not include those methods which utilize a cathode-ray, square wave, pulse or A.C. type of polarograph. For the sake of convenience, ? the polarographic methods will be discussed according to the type of supporting electrolyte employed, as the same electrolyte may serve to determine more than one element in more than one type of ore. "Rock failure process is generally recorded or measured using conventional sensors like strain gauges, seismic, micro-seismic, acoustic, electromagnetic and other techniques. The above sensors are either to be pasted on the surface of the rock sample or placed very near to it to capture the response of the sample with the increment of load. This requires precise tools to cut or polish the locations where sensors are to be placed. Moreover, deformation or acoustic or micro-seismic activities are recorded only at the locations where sensors are pasted.Recent development in Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique has shown promise to measure deformation / strain at every location of the surface of a sample. In DIC, two images (reference and deformed) are taken within a small time interval of the same object are compared to estimate the change in reflectance as a function of displacement, velocity or rate of strain at each pixel while the object is undergoing through a loading process. In this study, extended digital image correlation (X-DIC) technique has been implemented using 4-noded quadrilateral elements with a discontinuity surface in the deformed image. The continuous and enriched displacements are estimated at each node.The X-DIC method is verified using numerically generated images. The study has been further extended to evaluate the performance of X-DIC method on deformation analysis of experimental samples under uni-axial loading condition. The results of this study show that X-DIC method is an effective tool for determination of displacements of the entire surface of a rock sample having a discrete crack or discontinuity in a non-contact manner. This method demonstrates the applicability to investigate rock failure mechanism for the entire sample in a laboratory set up as well as monitoring of pillar failure mechanism in underground mines."

In 1976, Rio Algom Limited began the expansion of uranium production facilities at Elliot Lake. Quirke Mine was the only property in operation at the time, and plans were made to expand its milling capacity from 4,500 to 7,000 tons of ore per day. Following this expansion, other properties in the area will be reactivated to fulfill long-term contracts for uranium. As part of the expansion program, it was decided that in view of the escalating cost and impending shortage of energy, heat reclaim and conservation would be employed wherever practicable. In general terms, heat reclaim applications fall into three main classifications: ventilation, utility and process. Two of the ventilation applications and one process application will be described in some detail. Several other systems will be presented briefly as a matter of general interest. Some future possibilities will also be mentioned, together with their potential for economical heat recovery.

Professor Klaus Schönert and his students used fundamental physics to develop many of the principles required for the design and scale-up of "Gutt Bett Zerkleinern" devices such as the high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) or the high pressure roll crusher (HPRC). As the equipment evolved so have the tools used for its selection and analysis. In the current paper discrete element modeling (DEM), Metso&apos;s proprietary Fast Breakage simulations, and Schönert&apos;s packed bed piston test are combined with energy based population balance models (PBM) to yield an alternative to ore characterization and equipment selection by pilot plant testing. The resulting methodology is used to take the next step in understanding these devices with a view toward predicting plant performance. This paper describes a journey beginning with precise modeling of a small HPGR including stud geometry and system hydraulics. A key to predicting performance is the accurate modeling of individual particles, their motion in the machine, the probability of breakage and redistribution of fragments, and the inter-particle breakage events that occur between the rolls at different pressures, speeds and moisture levels. Advanced DEM simulations and particle breakage characterization methods provide the necessary technology. The resulting combined models were validated using a small diameter laboratory scale unit. The validated physics based model was used then used to predict the performance of plant scale units using a specific energy based scale-up method. Scale-up results are analyzed in terms of power draw, throughput, and discharge product size distribution.

Cadmium and other &apos;minor&apos; metals in Canada tend to remain inconspicuous given the prominence of the country&apos;s massive production of other minerals. This same reality is reflected in the accuracy and deficiency of quantitative data concerning the sources of supply and demand for these metals. It is the intent of this paper to identify the nature of some of these difficulties and to reconstruct a more accurate description of Canada&apos;s production and consumption of cadmium, based on the results of recent surveys undertaken by the Mineral Policy Sector of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada and Noranda Sales Corporation Ltd.

"The future of Polish copper mines KGHM Polish Miedz S.A. will be associated with mining at depth. At present, technologically advanced measures are being introduced to minimize the adverse influence of the environmental hazards on people working underground. Polkowice-Sieroszowice mine is the only mine in Poland where mining takes place in copper and salt deposits. On the basis of the current and anticipated methods of ventilation of a selected ore deposits the paper will analynze a number of solutions enabling planned mining of copper ore deposit, while minimizing the impact of natural aerological hazards in working areas. INTRODUCTION The future of copper ore mining, carried out by KGHM Polska Miedz S.A., will be based on mining from continuously greater depths (Butra, 2015). It is forecast that this will be accompanied by an increasing climatic hazard, resulting from an increase in the original temperature of rocks of more than 45°C as well as gas and geodynamic hazards (Soroko, 2015; Andrusikiewicz, 2015). Due to the safety of underground teams, a need arises to develop methods eliminating the adverse impact of the natural hazards, down to a level enabling the mining activity to be carried out on an industrial scale while maintaining favourable economic parameters. Current depths of the copper ore deposit being developed are effectively verifying the technical methods and measures employed to date for eliminating the natural aerological hazards. Amounts of air supplied to mining areas, with lengthy transport routes, are becoming insufficient for miners’ temperature safety, whereas increasing the power of cooling air-conditioning stations for cooling the air undermines the economic legitimacy. However, along with the temperature hazard, a significant problem at the current depths is an increase in gaseous occurrences in the headings’ areas. The concentrations of natural harmful gases found, even with the values below the permissible concentrations, in the case of limited amounts of air and/or low airflow rates, may pose a considerable danger to the workers. The hazards referred to are currently the major factors determining the advance of headings, above all in mining sections, being the outcome of geological structure and depth of lying of a deposit. However, at the current depths of mining minerals from deposits, room-and-pillar mining systems employed also have a decisive impact on the increase in natural aerological hazards."

The western part of the Hauy Formation of the Opemisca Group, occurring near the town of Chapais, is described in this paper. As it has been defined previously, the Formation is composed of a succession of subaerial andesi tic lava flows with some interbedded proximal volcaniclastic sediments. Towards the East, these volcanics yield to coarse grained fluviatile sediments having similar composition to the interbedded lavas. Further east, the composition of these sediments is more arkosic with dioritic and tonalitic fragments. It is proposed that these arkosic sediments are a part of the Stella Formation which has been described by Dimroth et al. (1982).

"The Pierre Beauchemin Mine attained commercial production in January 1989, and went on to produce 23 968 ounces of gold for the year, 3% higher than forecast. Underground development was accelerated to prepare the way for the production of an estimated 40 000 ounces in 1989.IntroductionThe Pierre Beauchemin Mine is located nine miles west of the city of Rouyn-Noranda (Fig. I).As a result of the amalgamation with Sullivan Mines in October 1987, the mine is now entirely owned by Cambior Inc.The Eldrich deposit was discovered in 1953and began production in 1955, closing in 1962 following the decrease in gold prices and the simultaneous decrease in silica content in the ore, which was sold to the Noranda smelter for flux. A total of 717 000 tons grading 0.14 oz Au/t were produced during this period.From July 1984 to October 1987, an underground exploration program was carried out by Sullivan on the Eldrich mining concession and the nearby Flavel property. The first phase of the program included reinstallation of surface facilities and dewatering of the Eldrich Mine. Following the completion of the first phase, extensive exploration was carried out, including a major program of diamond drilling. It was then decided to deepen the shaft to a depth of 1800 ft to access a new zone called the No.5 Zone .Following the amalgamation with Sullivan in October 1987, Cambior assumed the role of operator for the project, and continued the shaft deepening work that had already been started. A feasibility study was completed in April 1988 and the Cambior board of directors approved a production decision for the Eldrich-Flavel project.The preproduction program extended from May to December 1988 and was aimed at preparing the stopes in the upper part of the mine and at developing the mine infrastructure at the bottom of the mine.The mine was officially opened in August 1988. Cambior renamed the project the Pierre Beauchemin Mine in recognition of Pierre Beauchemin&apos;s pioneer-work."

"Recent process advances at Lac Minerals Est Malartic Division are discussed. The Est Malartic mill treats massive sulphide, copper/gold ore from the Bousquet 2 mine, to produce a gravity gold product, a copper flotation concentrate and a gold precipitate. The mill operation has been improved by the application of Knelson concentrators to replace jigs, the application of Outukumpu high grade tank cells and optimizing the cyanide leach to minimize cyanide consumption.IntroductionThe Est Malartic mill is located near the town of Malartic in the Abitibi Region of north western Quebec. The mill has been in production since the mid- J 930's processing mainly clean, free milling gold ore. Active mining from the Est Malartic mine ceased in 1980 and the mill was switched to custom processing of ore from La Mine Doyon located some 45 km to the west. This custom processing arrangement continued until 1987 when the expanded mill at Doyon became available to process all of the Doyon production. In 1987, Lac Minerals commenced development of a second mine at the Bousquet site located 40 km west of Malartic. This mine, Bousquet 2, is the down dip extension of the La Ronde mine developed by Agnico Eagle. During pre-feasibility evaluations, it was determined that modification of the Est Malartic mill to handle this new ore source was economically more attractive than building a new facility on site. Modifications to the mill to process the high copper/gold ore from the Bousquet 2 mine began in late 1989 and the new circuits were commissioned in mid-1990. Modifications included the addition of both gravity and flotation concentration circuits to recover coarse, free gold and the copper. The existing leach circuit continued operating on the copper flotation tailings with some minor modifications to the solution handling systems. An SO,/air cyanide destruction circuit was also added at this time."

The dissolution behaviour of ilmenite in acid solutions has been studied by many researchers to improve the leaching efficiency. Most studies which utilized natural ilmenite from different origins resulted in different reactivity due to the alteration caused by the weathering process. Previous researchers have suggested that the greater reactivity shown by some ilmenite samples towards sulphuric acid may be a result of the mineral being relatively unaltered. In the present study a rotating synthetic ilmenite disc of 2.2 cm diameter was subjected to leaching studies in hydrochloric acid. The dissolution rates of iron and titanium from synthetic ilmenite were determined in hydrochloric acid solutions (4 M to 9 M) over a temperature range of 50 to 80°C. Results show that the rate of dissolution of both iron and titanium increased with the increase in acid concentration. However, the rates decreased with time and obeyed a parabolic rate law indicating the blockage of the surface by an insoluble product. The rates of dissolution of both iron and titanium were higher in the presence of SnCl2 and remained unaffected with time indicating the reductive role of SnCl2 which inhibits the formation of surface blocking solids. Application to natural ilmenite is also discussed.
