"Porosity neutron deflection scales can be derived more easily by cumulative correlation than by the conventional method of plotting corresponding points on a graph. The micro-log can be used as a porosity datum for the neutron log by transforming the permeability cut-off it shows to a porosity cut-off by a permeability-porosity function obtained from core analysis. Porosity footage values calculated in this manner from the neutron log are within 20 per cent of core analysis values."

"One of the most important phases in Canada's relatively rapid development of its metal mining and refining industries was launched in 1928 when the directors of Noranda Mines Limited decided to establish an electrolytic copper refinery ""somewhere in Eastern Canada”. Noranda's president, J.Y. Murdoch, had already evolved the company's ""mine to market"" policy and was determined to prove the economic feasibility of refining Noranda copper in Canada. The time appeared to be ripe as buoyant business conditions continued into 1929. In addition, proven ore reserves at the Horne Mine in northwest Quebec had virtually tripled and the price of copper had reached a healthy 15 cents per pound. Letters Patent incorporating the company bearing the date February 6, 1929 had been granted by the Secretary of State in accordance with an application that specified a capital structure of $2 million divided into 20 000 shares with a value of $100 each. Noranda assumed 70% of the original investment in the proposed refinery, while the Nicholas Copper Company of New York (which later became Phelps Dodge Corporation) and British Metal Corporation Ltd. of London, England, each were responsible for 15%. Nicholas Copper Company agreed to supply the design and to supervise the construction of the refinery and British Metal Corporation would act as sales agent and market the refinery's products."

Lightweight metals such as magnesium show potential in replacing aluminum alloy castings for engine cradles, cylinder heads and transmission cases. Unfortunately, magnesium alloys are susceptible to entrapping oxides and other impurities during casting that hinder strength and ductility. The current study examined various filter sizes and configurations with the aim of improving the mechanical properties of permanent mould cast AZ91E. The unfiltered casting had a yield strength, tensile strength and ductility of 93.3 MPa, 153.3 MPa and 2.2 % respectively and increased to 96.5 MPa, 167.0 MPa and 3.1 % with the use of a fine mesh filter within the well of the mould. The increased strength and ductility was likely due to the filtered castings containing fewer inclusions on their fracture surfaces as compared to the unfiltered castings.

A direct comparison has been undertaken between laboratory wind tunnel experimentation and computational fluid dynamics simulation of a 3D manufactured analogue for a body of fractured broken rock, created with CAD/CAM techniques. Detailed descriptions of the ?design? of the analogue (using a discrete element analysis multi-body simulator), its manufacture (using computer aided design and 3D printing technology) and the laboratory experimentation (inserting the physical analogue into a laboratory scale wind tunnel) are presented. The agreement of the results of direct experimental observations on the manufactured analogue with the values from CFD simulations of those experiments justifies the utilization of a CFD environment for the practical investigation of geometric factors controlling air flow and heat exchange in complex assemblages of broken rock blocks. The ultimate goal is described, that of developing functional relations between bulk properties of such assemblages (such as their porosity and bulk density) and the low-level geometric factors that dictate the air flow behaviour, such as the equivalent perimeter length of the cross-sectional area available for flow, or average flow path tortuosity. A practical application area of the work in the mining context is also described; equivalent continuum air flow and heat transfer constitutive models developed on the CFD tool from such functional relations are useful in characterization of seasonal heat storage in large scale bodies (approximately 1 km3) of broken rock.

Between 1993 and 2003, a series of AG and SAG mill pilot plant trials were conducted using Hardinge Ical pilot plant scale SAG mills on numerous ore samples and ranging across a wide variety of operating conditions. The data from these tests were used to evaluate the design of SAG and AG mill circuits for over a dozen projects, of which about half were eventually constructed and commissioned. The data were also used in the development of SAG mill modelling, scale-up and simulation procedures by several consultants who had access to part of the data set. Recently, we have had the opportunity to bring this data together and further analyse the consolidated dataset. This paper reports on the outcomes of this analysis that has identified the impacts of different AG/SAG circuit flowsheets and operating conditions on energy efficiency and operating cost.

DEVELOPMENT at Steep Rock lake has given rise to renewed interest in the geology of the iron ore deposits in the Lake Superior Region and has implications of no small moment bearing upon methods of exploration in the Precambrian Shield generally. Following upon the Regional Lake Superior meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in August, 1941, the authors prepared a paper on the Steep Rock deposits, which appeared in the A.I.M.E. publication, Mining Technology, for January, 1943. Between Januar7 and April, 1943, exploration at Steep Rock was continued by means o vertical, Mesabi-type churn-drill holes put down from the ice. This drilling has enlarged the tonnage of ore previously known and has disclosed further facts relating to the origin of the ore. The added evidence, we believe, goes to support the hypothesis that the deposits were formed by a process of replacement due to upward-moving, iron-bearing solutions which came in as igneous after-effects. Accordingly, in presenting the subject to the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, it seems best not to change our first explanation, but to prefix the original paper with an interpretation of the results of the more recent explorations completed after its publication.

Introduction The world's largest known deposits of natural sodium sulphate (Glauber salt), generally termed 'alkali ' throughout western Canada, are located in the Province of Saskatchewan: reserves are estimated to exceed 200,000,000 tons. These are surface deposits resulting from the recent or present-day natural evaporation of brines, in which respect they are similar to those occurring in certain other parts of the world, as in semi-arid sections of the United States, Russia, Germany and Austria. In some areas, underground deposits formed hundreds of thousands of years ago have been _encountered in drilling, and indications are that they also were formed under arid or semi-arid conditions. The master key to the formation of deposits of natural sodium sulphate, wherever they occur, is a climate, either past or present, under which evaporation exceeds precipitation over a considerable period of time. Commercial development of the Saskatchewan deposits began about thirty years ago. Previously, the demand for sodium sulphate had largely been met by salt cake produced as a by-product in the manufacture of hydrochloric acid from common salt. The rapid increase in the production of Kraft paper and, more recently, the development of synthetic detergent materials, have caused a marked increase in the market for sodium sulphate. This chemical gives the extra toughness to Kraft paper and is used in detergent compositions in proportions as high as 75 per cent. Saskatchewan now has six commercial plants producing natural sodium sulphate. Production from each in the fiscal years 1947 and 1948 is shown in Table I. The newest and latest plant is that of Saskatchewan Minerals, at Chaplin, which 1s designed to produce up to 150,000 tons of salt cake, 98.5 to 99.5 per cent pure, yearly. This is equivalent to about 24 percent of the total United States production of crude commercial salt cake for 1947.

Synthesis of TiC /A1203 Composite from TiO2, Al and graphite using combustion technique has been investigated at different initial temperatures; room, 400 and 600 °C. The effect of initial temperature on the composition of the product, wave velocity and combustion temperature of the reaction was studied. The measured combustion temperature and wave velocity were increased with increasing the initial temperature of the combustion reaction. The maximum wave velocity obtained was 5.9mms-1 when conducting the combustion reaction at initial temperature of 600 °C. Oxidation resistance of the obtained composite was also studied at the temperature range 300-800 °C. No oxidation is detected before 400 °C while it takes place effectively at 700 °C forming different titanium oxides. Wave velocity measurements method was used to calculate the activation energy of the reaction between the starting materials. It was found to be 316.34 kJ mol 1 at the temperature range that was studied.

The paper begins with a brief history of the nickel industry in Finland, and then deals with the introduction of the flash smelting process. The main part of the paper is devoted to nickel refining, which is studied under four main headings -grinding, leaching, electrolyte precipitation, and nickel electrowinning. Flowsheets are illustrated, and the equipment used is described. Analyses of the material in the various stages, from concentrate to high-grade nickel matte, are also presented. N ICKEL made its appearance in the Finnish mining industry forty years ago, when a nickel deposit was discovered at Petsamo in Lapland. Mond Nickel Co. received the concession for this deposit from the Finnish Government, and the Petsamon Nikkeli Company constructed a mine and a nickel smelter (1), the completion of which was prevented by the 1939 Winter War. The mine and smelter were, however, completed soon afterwards in spite of World War II,

"Yielding bolt has been widely used for rock reinforcement in mining and civil engineering in high stress conditions. However, the interaction mechanism of yielding bolt and matrix mass is still not clear at present, and no analytical model is available to predict its reinforcement effect quantitatively. In this paper, the mainstream yielding rock bolts were reviewed firstly. After that, a coupling model is proposed to account for the interaction between yielding bolt and matrix mass. Based on the plane strain axial symmetry assumption and the incremental theory of plasticity, equilibrium equations and compatibility equations of matrix mass, and also the response of yielding rock bolt are deduced theoretically. The proposed method was programmed in Visual Basic development environment, and a semi-analytical solution for the coupling model is achieved. The reinforcement mechanism of yielding bolt in conventional tunnelling is clearly demonstrated through an illustrative case study. The reinforcement effect of yielding bolt is estimated quantitatively, and the distribution of axial force along the bolt is presented. In addition, the validity of proposed method is verified by numerical simulations. It is observed that many conventional rock bolts failed when experiencing large displacement, which implies that they are too stiff to sustain large deformation and dynamic conditions (Stillborg, 1994; Hoek et al., 1995). Yielding bolt, which can also be called energy-absorbing bolt, has been widely used for rock reinforcement in mining and civil engineering for these conditions (Neugebauer, E., 2008). The industry, in turn, depends on a great number of minerals, and chemical products derived from minerals, and it is the object of this brief paper to present a list of these with notes indicating the particular applications. In order to bring home the importance of the industry to your daily life, stop and consider the many things around you accepted as a matter of course. Cement provides the smooth surfaces of many of our highways, city streets, and sidewalks. It enters into nearly all types of construction, alone or in combination with other clay products. Glass we hardly appreciate because we can see through it so easily, but it is there to serve us in windows, doors, and other light-transmitting structures. Glass is the universal means of transporting liquids and beverages, our beverages are usually served in it, and, with the recent development in fine spun glass textiles, there is a possibility of glass clothing in the future. "Global population is a key factor in future energy requirements, especially considering the important elements of global energy resources, electricity production, the accessibility/non-accessibility of electricity, greenhouse gas emissions and the states of nuclear reactors. Everyday human requirements depend on industrial products, and industries need a considerable amount of electricity to run. Nuclear fuel is inexpensive and bolsters industrial growth. As uranium reserves are being consumed rapidly, an alternative source of energy in the nuclear industry is thorium. Here, primary energy supplies by various sources from 1993 to 2011 as well as estimates of future needs to 2020 are discussed. This study finds that primary energy sources are mainly fossil fuels, renewables sources, and nuclear and hydro energy. In addition, growth depends on increases mainly in renewable sources.Recovery of thorium from its ores by using hydrometallurgical routes were described and discussed. The final part of this paper was presented a case study of the thorium extraction from Korean monazite ore leach liquors by using Prieme JM-T diluted in A150 diluent as an extractant system. And possible separation of the thorium from rare earths (REs) and base metals were calculated by measuring of separation factors and finally, the recovery of thorium from loaded organic of Prieme JM-T was established.THORIUM IS FUTURE NUCLEAR FUEL?Global energy consumption is increasing everyday with the high population growth, high industrialization of numerous countries and the higher level of good and services consumption that follows it. If we look at specific sectors of the economy, oil consumption grew by 0.8 million barrels per day, globally, whereas the increase was 0.4 % for natural gas and coal 1.8 % for nuclear power and just under 2.0 % for hydroelectric power (Asheley 2009). Use of renewable sources of energy for power generation and transportation increased by 3% in 2014 (BP 2015)). Thus alternative source of energy must be identified and developed to meet this increasing demand. Thorium is a potential one for the nuclear industry."

Network communication note is a cloud system for an earthwork project. It enables backhoe operators and dump truck drivers to monitor their own works in progress currently and performed up to the present, and to have opportunity to reflect on their own bearings in the earthwork operations, and then could increase their situational awareness to the actual work conditions. First, this paper presents problems and purpose. Secondly, the configuration of the network communication note is reported. "Three types of anodic films (unsealed, hot water sealed and agent sealed) were prepared to study the effects of anodizing pores structure on the adhesive bonding performance of AA5754 automotive sheets. The morphology of the anodic films was examined by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the composition was examined by glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES). The adhesive bonding strength and durability in corrosive environment were investigated by using single lap shear test and salt spray corrosion test (SST), respectively. The results showed that the pores structure could significantly influence the adhesive bonding performance. The unsealed sample showed porous structure and provided high bonding strength, however, the durability was poor in corrosive environment. The hot water sealed sample showed fine and loose hydrated alumin a structure on the surface and provided high durability in corrosive environment, but the bonding strength was low. In contrast, the agent sealed sample provided both high bonding strength and durability in corrosive environment.INTRODUCTIONAdhesively bonded aluminum joints by using adhesives have been widely used for the realization of lightweight design in industrial applications like automotive and aerospace industry[1, 2]. Durable bonds which are capable of taking structural loads can be created due to a careful consideration of the way in which the joint is formed, the type of adhesive and the appropriate treatment of the adherend surfaces prior to bonding[3-6]. Experiences demonstrate that the surface treatment is the most critical step which could not be disregarded, since it is essential to achieve long-term service capability [7].In structural applications, a bonded assembly is expected to maintain a significant load and may be combined with exposure to harsh environmental conditions in its service life. For this purpose, the pretreatment for structural bonding of aluminum alloy must provide not only strong tensile strength and durability but also good corrosion resistance. Chromic acid anodizing (CAA) process provides an anodized layer which has good corrosion resistance while also exhibiting useful adhesion characteristics as well as lacquer coating retaining characteristics[8].However, the use of Cr (VI) is unadvised from a health and environmental point of view since it is toxic and carcinogenic, and this process is gradually limited even prohibited. Boeing's phosphoric acid anodizing(PAA) process provides a more open pore structure allowing penetration of high molecular primers/adhesives[8]and PAA process is the most widely used pre-surface treatment suitable for adhesive bonding between aluminum alloy components. Rahimi et al. demonstrated that nanostructure can be produced by PAA process and is affected by the time of pretreatment and anodizing parameters [9]. Xu et al.investigated the influence of surface energy and roughness on adhesive bonding through PAAprocess and provided improved adhesion performance under certain anodizing parameter[10]. However, PAA process is normally not recommended for a major concern of deterioration of the mechanical performance of the joints as a result of exposure to a wet and corrosive environment. Sulfuric acid anodizing(SAA)process, recently, has been widely used for corrosion protection and good base coating for the adhesion of lacquers in aerospace manufacturing[11]. The good performance is explained by properties such as the porous morphology and high adsorptive power of the oxide film, the chemical and electrical inertness of the anodized layer. Moreover, modified sulfuric acid could also used for adhesive bonding. The splash phenomenon and its effective parameters in metallurgical converters have been studied thoroughly for decades. The detailed studies of processes such as tuyere blockage, wave formation during air injection, entrapped phases, and also processes which control the formation of bubbles in viscous fluids are not feasible yet. In this research, we have used a converter-shaped vessel made of flexi-glass. Water and oil have been used as matte and slag phases respectively. The effective operational factors responsible for creation of splashing have been studied such as air flow rate, tuyere angles, depth of tuyere submergence, tuyere blockage, density and viscosity of liquids, liquids heights, etc. The results have been found as follows: the amount of splashing increases slowly as air flow rate increases. However, as the air flow rate reaches a critical value (depending on the physical specification of converter) the amount of splashing rises sharply, because the flow of air inside the liquid changes from bubbling into a jet stream; and most of the splashed materials are in the form of filaments instead of droplets. Changing tuyere angle from horizontal towards vertical position will increase the turbulence level on the fluid surface and causes an increase in the amount of splashing. The effect of tuyere submergence is related to the converter opening angle. As the converter opening angle is shifted towards the hood position, the amount of tuyere submergence and splashing will increase. As density of the liquid increases, the number of droplets splashing increases with a decrease in drop size. Therefore, the total amount of splashing decreases. However, as viscosity of the liquid increases, the splashing material increases due to the changes in the splashed material from droplet shape into filament form. The height of liquid inside the converter, depending on the relative height of heavy phase and light phase, is an important parameter regarding splashing. As the relative height of heavy phase to light phase increases the splashing will decrease. The tuyere blockage will cause the pressure in the inlet manifold to increase; and in real cases will increase the splashing. Finally, we have development a model based on dimensional analysis to relate the above parameters in order to calculate the amount of splashed material.

"Detailed characterization and improved recovery of a micro-fine, low-grade refractory gold ore from a beneficiation plant in Yunnan Province, China, was investigated. Different analytical techniques, such as videlicet size analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and mineral analysis by a Mineral Liberation Analyser, were used for mineralogical characterization of the ore. This paper describes an experimental study on the effect of the grinding fineness and the use of various flotation reagent regimes involving collectors, depressors, and activators on the flotation behaviour of micro-fine auriferous pyrite. Two-stage flotation resulted in high gold grade (32.71 g/t) and gold recovery (80.02%) of the bulk gold concentrate. This process opens the possibilities of maximizing Au recoveries in a micro-fine low-grade refractory gold ore where low recoveries are common.INTRODUCTIONWith the rapid development of the gold industry, refractory gold ores are becoming increasingly important resources for gold production (O’Connor & Dunne, 1994; Agorhom, Skinner, & Zanin, 2012). Among these refractory gold ores, sulfur and micro-grained native gold ores represent a significant challenge, since they are not amenable to gold recovery by direct cyanidation. The gold contained in this type of ore is very finely disseminated and encapsulated in sulfides, which makes it inaccessible to the cyanide solution during direct cyanidation (Bulatovic, 1997; Allan & Woodcock, 2001). Autoclave pressure oxidation (AC POX) of the sulfide ore and subsequent cyanidation is a common technology used to recover the gold in such types of ore. Flotation is often used as a pre-treatment method to refractory gold ore (Monte Lins, & Oliveira, 1997).As the gold-carrier minerals are usually finely disseminated (sometimes under 10 µm) and intimately associated with gangue minerals, a fine grind is necessary to get a high degree of liberation. At the same time, the fine grind usually causes the production of significant quantities of slimes, which comprise easy-to-float gangue minerals such as mica, dolomite, and calcite. These mineral phases are naturally hydrophobic and float readily, competing with the value minerals in the froth phase and resulting in lower concentrate grades."

The performance of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) depends on the efficiency of the cutters, which can be influenced by geological conditions and rock mass properties. In this study, a three-dimensional numerical model, based on a discrete element method, was used to evaluate the effects of joint orientation and its spacing on the fragmentation process by a TBM cutter. Several models were constructed to study the effects of variable orientation; these models incorporated different spacing, variable spacing, different orientations on the fragmentation process, and different sections of the block model. Three parameters, consisting of induced tensile stress, induced shear stress and maximum displacement, were calculated. The stress in each section that forms chips was considered as critical stress; critical joint spacing and orientation in each section were determined. Results show that the critical orientation was in the range of 45 to 60º, where there was a possibility to achieve the maximum penetration rate. The critical joint spacing was 200 mm and, by increasing joint spacing, the value of critical stress decreased significantly. Furthermore, joint orientation could influence more than joint spacing in the rock cutting process.

Cracks can be sized accurately. ?EMCD dramatically reduces most cleaning requirements as there is no need to clean to bare metal. ?EMCD is capable of inspection through thin metallic coatings, or through non-conducting coatings up to 10mm thick. ?EMCD allows full data storage for back-up, off-line view and audit purposes.
