"A significant area of Outotec’s business involves fluidized bed roasting. With several decades of experience, more than 300 reference plants and strong R&D capabilities, the company provides several industries with optimum processing solutions. Applications include oxidation and sulfation of sulfides found in copper, pyrite and zinc concentrates. Gold production and de-arsenifying roasting are also within this scope. This paper describes the latest furnace developments and includes novel trends. Moreover, hot and wet gas cleaning systems are examined focusing on unit operations related to the removal of components such as dust, SO2 for sulfuric acid production, fumes, halides, Hg, hydrocarbons, nitrous oxides and metals.INTRODUCTIONGenerally, when defining roasting processes, it can be stated that the respective primary pyrometallurgical reaction is exothermic, of gas-solid nature and relates to a value solid product. These processes are a key focus within Outotec’s scope and include: (i) dead roasting (ii) sulfating roasting (iii) partial de-arsenifying roasting and (iv) two-stage, de-arsenifying roasting.Dead roasting involves the oxidation of a given sulfide, thus allowing for a subsequent leaching process, and has been applied to producing ZnO. Dead roasting of pyrite has also been extensively utilized with a primary goal of producing sulfuric acid. In contrast, sulfating roasting involves converting a sulfide to its sulfate, enabling a selective sulfation of components, such as Cu or Co, and their separation from ferrous components during leaching (produced sulfates are soluble). Partial roasting involves partially oxidating the metal sulfide to its oxide with the simultaneous production of gaseous As4O6, which is handled during gas cleaning. The solid product, containing hardly any As, is rich in S and can be fed to a respective smelter (e.g. in the case of Cu). Alternatively, if the production of oxide is required, a dead roasting step is added after the partial roasting step, with the overall process considered as two-stage roasting."

The Division is concerned with physical methods as applied to geo-logical research and mapping. An at-tempt is made to describe long-term goals, illustrated by examples of projects in the fields of aeromagnetic interpretation, palaeomagnetic re-search, Pleistocene and groundwater geophysics, seismic surveying, electromagnetic research and instrument development. Cooperative projects in surveys and research, with universities, private companies and provincial organizations, are frequently undertaken. An outstanding example of this is the recently approved Federal-Provincial Aeromagnetic Survey Plan, the purpose of which is discussed both from an economic and a scientific point of view. "The new H-W orebody was evaluated by considering its production at three technically feasible rates. Capital and operating costs were estimated f or each rate and production sequences were established using mining cutoff limits generated by an ore value algorithm. The viability of the project was then examined by conducting economic and financial analyses of each of the three production cases under various world economic scenarios. These analyses employing standard profitability measures demonstrated all three cases would be economically viable; the production case which maximized the Net Present Value of the project was the one selected for development and production.IntroductionWestmin Resources Limited and its predecessor company, Western Mines Ltd., has been continuously carrying out mining operations near Myra Falls in Central Vancouver Island since December 1966. The mining operation, whose current production rate is approximately 830 tonnes / day (t/d), based on ore derived from the Myra and Lynx Mines, produces copper, lead and zinc concentrates which contain significant quantities of gold and silver in addition to the base metals.In the late 1970s, with Lynx and Myra ore reserves slipping to unacceptably low levels, a major increase in mine-site exploration was initiated, with outside geological staff brought in to complement the efforts of the mine's geological staff. By the end of 1979, this program had resulted in the discovery of a significant new orebody on a deeper horizon some 300 metres below the one which hosts the Lynx and Myra deposits. Throughout the period 1980-1982, major drilling was carried out to evaluate the new H-W deposit and by the end of 1982, drill-indicated mineral inventory for the deposit compared with Myra, Lynx and Price ore reserves was as shown in Table I. During this same three-year period, a major development and evaluation program was underway comprising environmental monitoring and control programs, shaft sinking test mining, bulk sampling and mill testing, rock mechanics studies and preparation of the Stage I and II reports for the multidisciplinary Environmental Land Use Committee (ELUC).As a result of the preliminary engineering work and exploration drilling, it became rapidly apparent that the H-W deposit could support a considerably higher production rate than the current one. Accordingly, engineering studies including scheduling of development and production as well as capital and operating cost estimates, were focused on three possible production rates: 1350, 1800 and 2700 t/d. Our task was to select the optimum one of these three rates."

"Potentially economic deposits of rare earth elements (REE) often contain elevated levels of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM), primarily thorium and uranium and their associated radioactive decay products. The concentrations of NORM usually exceed typical background levels of natural radioactivity, sometimes by factors of ten or more, and can be of concern relative to occupational radiation protection and the management and disposal of REE mineral processing and metallurgical wastes. This paper provides a summary of the radiological issues normally encountered in the REE concentrate production industry. In addition to an introduction to background radiation and radioactivity, including the thorium and uranium radioactive decay series, radiation levels expected to be encountered in REE concentrate production are outlined. The occupational, environmental and regulatory aspects of REE production related to NORM, including radiation dose limits, radioactive waste disposal guidelines, and threshold VALUES (for the application of transport regulations, are presented.INTRODUCTIONConcurrent with the increasing demand for new sources of rare earth elements (REE) to meet modern industrial needs, there is also an increasing awareness of the radioactivity associated with the REE ores and resources. This is an especially important consideration in addressing questions from the public and local communities who are often concerned about “radiation” and “radioactivity”. Public concern is heightened by reference to legacy issues that arose during times of less regulatory oversight; as well, the benefits of modern technologies, practices and regulation are overlooked. Such concerns are also often inflamed by unfounded claims by non-governmental organizations (NGO’s). Thus, it is important that all concerned have a full understanding of just what the potential risks from radiation associated with REE are, or are not. This paper provides an overview of the sources of radioactivity, the potential implications of radiation and radioactivity in the REE industry, and a brief discussion of established and reliable methods of managing exposure to radiation and radioactivity."

ABSTRACT The subject of gold flotation has been reviewed extensively. Most of these reviews focus on the theories of gold flotation and the physical and chemical effects that may impact the efficacy of the gold flotation process. The current status of gold flotation chemistry as it is being applied in industry has not been widely addressed. This paper reviews current gold flotation practice and research advancements and discusses how these applications tie in with the current understanding of gold flotation chemistry. Survey results from worldwide gold flotation operations are analyzed. Potential future areas of gold flotation research are highlighted.

Red lake is a body of water some thirty miles in length lying about forty miles northwest of the outlet of Lac Seul. It forms one of several large lake expansions on a river which enters the English river from the north, twenty miles below Lac Seul. Before the construction of the National Transcontinental railway a long canoe journey was necessary to reach that part of the English river, and Red lake, two days travel beyond, was one of the furthest outposts of the trading companies in that difficultly accessible triangle of country between Lake Winnipeg, James Bay and the English and Albany rivers. The Hudson's Bay Company post at Red lake is said to be one of the earliest established in the district but there are no records at the post, and as the English and Albany rivers never were used to any great extent as travel routes there is no mention of the place in the diaries of any of the early explorers. Dr. Bell passed through Red lake on his excursion to the Berens river country in 1883, and a brief note mentions that Huronian rocks were seen. To Dr. Dowling, however, belongs the credit for the first thorough description of this basin of sediments and basic volcanics. In 1893 he followed the course of Dr. Bell's trip, of ten years previous, through Red lake to the upper part of the Berens river.

"Fatigue and corrosion fatigue measurements were carried out on five commercially available metals -four steels and an aluminum alloy -which are used as structural materials in mine shaft conveyances. In the corrosion fatigue measurements, drain waters collected in the shafts of three different Canadian mines were used as corrodents. The mine waters had been selected on the basis of their relatively large differences in acidity and/ or composition.It was found that the corrosion fatigue strengths of the four steels were similar, despite their differences in tensile properties, and that the type of water used in the tests had little effect on the results. Mild steel showed the highest and most consistent values of the damage ratio (ratio between the corrosion fatigue and the plain fatigue strengths at 107 cycles). The corrosion fatigue behaviour of the aluminum alloy (ASTM Type 6061-T6) was found to differ markedly in the three mine waters. A high damage ratio (i.e., superior performance) was shown in a mine water in which the corrosion attack was uniform; much lower damage ratios were shown in waters which produced localized corrosion attack. Corrosion rates were too low to be deter-mined conveniently by conventional weight-loss methods, but calculations from polarization curves provided a rapid demonstration that corrosion rates were distinctly lower in the mine water which produced high damage ratios."

"Development of underground openings in a deep mining environment requires a support system that is able to absorb energy as a result of dynamic loading due to rockbursting and blasting and static loading due to convergence as the development face advances. The support system must be resistant to corrosion and be effective over the life of the excavation, upward of ten years, yet simple and cost effective to install. Over the past two years, research has been conducted at INCO’s Creighton Mine to try and identify a one-pass grouted support system that will meet these needs.The main problem faced, with simply using grouted rebar at depth, is the effect of tunnel convergence on the stiff grouted bolts. Typically, if fully grouted, stiff rebar are installed to the face of an advancing development heading, the amount of convergence that occurs can result in failure of the bolts at the face plates used to attach the mine screen to the back. An initial support is required to enable crews to continue the bolting cycle in the immediate term, yet allow for this convergence over the longer term as the drift advances. The ideal support system will allow both to occur, giving effective immediate support while providing long-term effectiveness in allowing convergence to occur while maintaining the capacity of the bolt.This paper will investigate the expected convergence in deep development headings at +2200 m (+7200 ft) through the use of direct measurements using both flex rod extensometers grouted into the back of a development heading and five-point tape extensometer stations. Measured results will be compared with simple2-D numerical analysis to evaluate the anticipated convergence expected to be absorbed by the bolting system. The required convergence will then be compared with load deformation response of several support configurations."

The orange waste after lime water modification was converted into promising adsorbents for fluoride by metal loading reaction. The effectiveness and mechanism of fluoride adsorption on metal loaded orange waste gel from synthetic and real plating solution were investigated. Amount of zirconium(IV), aluminium(III), cerium(III), lanthanum(III), titanium(IV), vanadium(IV) and tin(IV) loaded on orange waste from aquearegia dissolution were evaluated to be 1.62, 1.16, 0.93, 0.95, 1.20, 1.12, 0.97 mmol/g respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of zirconium(IV), cerium(III), lanthanum(III), iron(III) and aluminium(III) loaded orange waste for fluoride ions were evaluated to be 1.74, 0.91, 1.07, 0.98 and 1.01 mmol/g from aqueous solution. The mechanism of fluoride adsorption by metal loaded orange waste was inferred to be ligand exchange reaction. Application of zirconium(IV) loaded saponified orange juice residue(SOJR) for real plating solution showed effective removal of trace concentration of fluoride down to the accepted standard. The negligible interference of co existing anions like nitrate, carbonate, sulphate and chloride makes zirconium(IV) loaded SOJR a promising sorbent for waste water treatment. The adsorbed fluoride from fluoride loaded zirconium(IV)-SOJR was effectively desorbed by using alkali solution for its regeneration. This work shed light on the potential application of metal loaded SOJR to remediate fluoride contaminated water for environmental relevance.

A SHORTAGE of cement in the Prairie Provinces, together with an aggressive policy on the part of the Saskatchewan Government in bringing new industries to the province, combined to create a favourable set of conditions for the establishment of Saskatchewan's first cement plant on the outskirts of Regina. Built by Saskatchewan Cement Corporation Limited, this single-kiln plant, tl1e latest addition to cement producers on the Prairies, began operations in the Fall of 1956. Location of the plant followed the trend of building cement manufacturing facilities in market areas rather than at raw material sources. In 1957, all assets of the Corporation were taken over by Inland Cement Company Limited and the plant and quarry now operate as Saskatchewan Cement Company, an Inland division. The Regina plant's production makes up approximately eleven per cent of the productive capacity of all plants in the Prairie Provinces. At present, two types of cement are manufactured -normal portland and sulphate resisting.

"The nickel deposits of Sudbury, discovered in .1885, have probably commanded as much attention as any single group of orebodies in the world. They have been the major source of the world's nickel supply since 1903, when their production first surpassed that from the Pacific Island of New Caledonia. From 1903 to 1914 the production from New Caledonia remained essentially constant, whereas that from Sudbury increased from 13,000,000 to 50,000,000 pounds a year. After 1914 the production from New Caledonia gradually dropped to about 4,000,000 pounds in 1919, where it remained until 1923. During these years the Canadian production increased steadily and since 1923 has gone up at an amazing rate to a peak of over 280,000,000 pounds in 1941. Meanwhile the New Caledonia production increased to about 10,000,000 pounds until the pressure of war raised it to roughly 14,000,000 pounds a year.The Sudbury deposits, because they have been the source of 80 per cent of the world supply of nickel, because of their economic importance to the world of metals, and because they are geologically unique in their occurrence, structure, and genesis, have attracted foremost consideration and the literature relative to their geology is voluminous. This is particularly true in regard to genesis.There is a significant and interesting parallel in time between the advancement of the science of economic geology and the great expansion of the nickel industry. The controversies regarding the fundamental classification of orebodies into generalized types were in full swing during the height of the development and expansion of the great nickel mines, and the Sudbury deposits, being the most important and the only ones of the sulphide type extensively developed, have been the chief source of information in regard to this type. The observations and the conclusions drawn thereon from numerous studies of the various mines of the district have not only influenced, but are the essence of, this chapter of the science."

Cementing materials of mineral origin were well known to the ancients. Ordinary lime and gypsum plasters were the first to be recorded by historians. The next development was the discovery that certain limes would set under water, but the hydraulic property was not definitely attributed to the presence of clay in the limestone until many centuries later. The Romans advanced a step nearer to modern cement in the development of 'pozzuolana', a mixture of volcanic ash or trass with hydrated lime. The silicate of aluminium in the volcanic rock combined readily with the lime, forming a hydraulic mortar or cement which was widely used. Natural Cement In Europe (1) No further progress was made in the art of manufacturing cement for several centuries, during which the Roman Empire declined and passed away, and the Anglo-Saxon race slowly and painfully evolved through the Middle Ages an ever-increasing prestige. An Englishman, John Smeaton, is credited with the honour of the next important development, for he employed a little-known cementing material-natural cement-in constructing the Eddystone lighthouse in 1756. It was called 'natural' cement because it was made from a natural rock with no additions of other materials. The process consisted of calcining an argillaceous limestone at a comparatively low temperature and grinding the product to a fine powder. Care was exercised to keep the temperature low, and any material burned to the clinkering point was thrown away, although such material was, as learned at a later time, Portland cement.

"Development of a process for the treatment of a nickel copper matte rich in the minerals heazlewoodite, chalcocite and bornite has demonstrated significant base metal recoveries and metal separation efficiencies. The determination of chemical and mineralogical changes occurring in the individual leaching stages in laboratory experiments has enabled a better understanding of the complex leaching chemistry. The chemistry and mineralogy of the piloting and laboratory processes are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe nickel-copper sulfide ores of the South African Bushveld Complex are among the most important Platinum Group Metal (PGM) bearing ores, and contain the world’s largest reserves of platinum. The treatment used in the recovery of PGMs from these ores includes three types of processes, namely ore concentration using physical techniques such as flotation and gravity separation, concentration by pyrometallurgical means, hydrometallurgical extraction of the base metals followed by the PGMs. Following milling of the ore, flotation involves the separation of high value minerals from gangue by taking advantage of the differences in their hydrophobicity. These differences are generally maximized through the use of a surfactant or wetting agent. Concentrates are then thermally treated and melted which brings about physical and chemical changes that enable the recovery of base metals and PGMs. The main aim of the smelting and converting process is to separate and eliminate the valuable metals from the bulk of the unwanted gangue and essentially all of the iron and to concentrate the metal VALUES (into a high grade converter matte. The matte can be further enriched by magnetic separation, producing a PGM-rich magnetic fraction and a base metal-rich non-magnetic fraction. The magnetic fraction is treated by hydrometallurgical processes to produce a PGM concentrate which is further refined to separate and purify the individual metals. The non-magnetic fraction is treated to produce marketable metal VALUES (such as nickel, copper, cobalt and to a lesser extent PGMs. The principal objective of any hydrometallurgical extractive process is to leach the desired elements selectively into an aqueous phase so as to separate them from the bulk of the material. It is believed that many of the problems encountered in the operation of gold cyanidation plants are difficult to resolve due to the lack of sufficient and reliable in-formation regarding the variations and actual values of operating variables at any given time. The application of instruments to monitor the more important variables in the cyanidation process should result in more efficient plant operation and a better understanding of the process. The use of pH and conductivity sensing devices for alkalinity measurements, a monitor to determine the dissolved oxygen content of plant solutions, a continuous cyanide titrator and sonic control of grinding circuits are discussed. Although the discussion is oriented toward the cyanide process, much of the paper is applicable to other ore treatment operations.

THE Yukon Consolidated Gold Corporation, Limited, a Canadian company, operates alluvial gold dredges in the Klondike goldfields of Yukon Territory. Its operations are of unique interest to Canadian mining as it is the only large-scale placer mining operation of this type in Canada. Its properties lie in the valley of the Klondike river and its tributaries, Bonanza, Hunker, Bear, Last Chance, and All Gold creeks, and in the valley of Indian river and its tributaries, Dominion, Gold Run, Sulphur, Eureka, Montana, and Quartz creeks. At the end of 1938, they consisted of 1,650 placer mining claims and 9 leases or concessions. They cover a belt with an area of approximately 1,000 square miles. This vast area covers in part claims which have been previously worked by other methods such as 'drift' and 'open-cut' mining, and areas which were too low grade for such methods. The ground held by the Company is not held in freehold but in the form of mining claims and mining leases granted by the Dominion Government under the provisions of the Yukon Placer Mining Act. Full-size creek claims are 500 feet in length by 1,000 feet on either side of the base-line. Hill and bench claims are 500 feet up and clown the valley and 1,000 feet at right angles to the valley. All claims are held on the basis of an annual renewal fee of $10 for each claim plus 'representation work' of an assessed value of $200 per claim per annum. For the purpose of such representation work, claims may be 'grouped'. This means that work done by one dredge is sufficient to 'represent' a comparatively large block of claims. It is only in this way that it becomes possible to consider operations on a large scale over a term of years, for such operations would obviously be impossible on law-grade ground if representation work had to be done separately on each individual claim in each year.

The Mantaro Phosphate Property is located ~ 250 km east of Lima, Peru in the Andean altiplano near the city of Huancayo, Junin District. The Mantaro deposit is a mineralized zone of phosphatic rock currently defined by surface outcrops, trenches and drilling extending over a strike length of more than 30 km and a width of more than 5 km covering ~27,700 hectares. Mineralization is exposed as three roughly parallel exposures (?mantos?) trending in a northwest-southeast direction along the Mancaspico syncline. Estimated mineral resources1 contained in Manto 1 of the Property (4% P2O5 cut-off) as of February 21, 2010, are: Measured 5.548 million tonnes @ 10.8% P2O5 Indicated 33.975 million tonnes @ 9.9% P2O5 Measured + Indicated 39.523 million tonnes @ 10.0 % P2O5 Inferred² 376.265 million tonnes @ 9.0% P2O5 1Tonnes rounded to the nearest 1,000 and grade to 1 decimal place. 2Inferred material reported with no cut-off and an assumed grade. There is considerable potential to expand the resource base. Mantos 2 and 3 of the deposit have been geologically mapped and exhibit surface mineralization widths similar to Manto 1. Given that the deposit is of marine sedimentary origin, it is reasonable to infer that comparable grades and depth of mineralization are present within Mantos 2 and 3. Based on this assumption, the potential mineral deposits within Mantos 2 and 3 are estimated to be approximately: Manto 2 425-435 million tonnes @ 9% P2O5 Manto 3 280-290 million tonnes @ 9 % P2O5 These potential quantities and grade are conceptual in nature, there has been insufficient exploration to define a mineral resource and it is uncertain if further exploration will result in these targets being delineated as a mineral resource. However, should such conceptual resources be confirmed by trenching and drilling, the Mantaro Phosphate Property would rank as one of the most significant phosphate deposits in the world.

Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) is the earth’s most abundant copper ore mineral, but is refractory to leaching with sulfates, chlorides, and other common lixiviants and oxidants. This has led to increasing research into alternative lixiviants for recovering Cu from chalcopyrite. Here, we review the leach kinetics of chalcopyrite in glycine, ionic liquids, and methanesulfonic acid, compared to baseline ferric sulfate and ferric chloride. Glycine (CH2NH2COOH) has long been used in applications such as biocatalysis and electroplating, and has recently been examined as a lixiviant for whole ores and concentrates of both copper and gold. It is nontoxic, biodegradable, and capable of strongly complexing Cu2+. Compatible oxidants are peroxide, dissolved oxygen, and ferric sulfate. Chalcopyrite leaching rate in glycine is chemical reaction-controlled, but the effects of grain size and the reaction orders with respect to lixiviant and oxidant concentrations and mass transfer vary. The use of ionic liquids as a leaching agent for chalcopyrite has been extensively investigated in recent years. This system is based primarily on the use of the imidazolium molecule (C3H5N2), which is a planar 5-member ring structure. This lixiviant has been applied to the leaching of chalcopyrite in the form of pure mineral, concentrates, and ores. Kinetics of ionic liquid leaching of chalcopyrite vary substantially depending on the type and concentration of ionic liquid. Methanesulfonic acid (HCH3SO3) is one of the newest lixiviants available in leaching, having only been examined in the last decade. It has been examined as a substitute for sulfuric acid, since it is less corrosive, is biodegradable, and breaks down to carbon dioxide and sulfate over time. The rate of copper leaching from chalcopyrite by methanesulfonic acid is controlled by diffusion and exhibits a strong dependence on oxidant type and concentration. Despite promising reaction rates and total extraction by some of these novel lixiviants, comparison with baseline ferric sulfate and ferric chloride systems makes it doubtful that any will be commercially viable in the near term. Only at very high reagent concentrations and temperatures, and/or very fine grain size, did any of the systems perform comparably to the much cheaper ferric chloride at extracting Cu from chalcopyrite. Most had similar overall reaction rates and total extraction to ferric sulfate, which is relatively common and cheap.
