"This paper presents results of ongoing research being carried out at the University of New South Wales into improved methods for estimating rock mass strength. In this paper the rock mass strength of Hawkesbury Sandstone is assessed. An estimate is first made based on an extensive database of intact rock strength data being collated by the author and the assumption that the rock mass strength can be determined following the GSI approach. The resulting strength envelope is then compared with nine documented case studies where stress induced failure has occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone. The case studies cover a range of conditions:• construction dates from 1880s to 2006• spans from 3.2 to 12.5 m• depths from 17 to 124 m• excavation methods of drill & blast, roadheader and TBM.Finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the stresses present at the time of failure. The finite element models are interrogated to provide the values of major and minor principal stresses in and around the mapped failure zone. Failure and stable points are then compared to the rock mass strength envelope(s) of Hawkesbury Sandstone derived using the Hoek-Brown criterion and spalling criteria. The Hoek-Brown rock mass strength envelope differentiates between the ‘failed’ and ‘stable’ zones remarkably well.INTRODUCTIONStress induced failures of rock masses are fortunately rare in civil tunnelling. However, when they occur they provide an opportunity to calibrate an assumed rock mass strength criterion. This paper compares an estimate of rock mass strength for the Hawkesbury Sandstone with the following cases where stress induced failure occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone.• Cataract & Devines Tunnels of the Upper Canal (Upper Nepean Scheme)• Malabar Outfall Tunnel• Sydney liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) Storage Cavern• Northside Storage Tunnel• Cross City Tunnel• Lane Cove TunnelTwo-dimensional finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the stresses present at the time of the failures. The principal stresses are then compared to the assessed rock mass strength envelope(s) of Hawkesbury Sandstone derived using the 2002 Hoek-Brown criterion (Hoek et al., 2002) and the spalling criterion suggested by Diederichs (2007)."

"The basic refractories used in non-ferrous industry contain chrome ore for improving the thermal shock resistance, thus reducing the penetration of molten metal and fayalite-type slags into the lining. The current study aims to replace chrome ore with Me4+ ions along with Fe3+ ions in order to form MgO-Al2O3- FeOx-Me4+O2 based complex spinel systems that could perform similar to the complex chromia-bearing spinel in the magnesia-chrome refractories. This system allows for lower temperatures of synthesis and sintering. In our study, compositions with 60% MgO were fired below 1500°C and resulted in complete formation of complex spinel, and open porosity less than 5%. The in-situ formation of the complex spinel from the fine mix of oxides in the MgO-Al2O3-FeOx-Me4+O2 system offers a suitable alternative of binding system to produce basic refractories at lower temperatures and of similar physical and mechanical properties with magnesia-chrome bricks fired above 1750ºC. INTRODUCTIONThe synthesis of magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAl2O4) (Maschio, Fabbri, & Fiori, 1988) or magnesium chromate spinel (MgCr2O4) from their respective oxides is diffusion controlled resulting in a sluggish reaction even at high temperatures. For instance, the diffusion of Mg2+ and Al3+ ions in the intermediate spinel layer during reaction is slower than the diffusion of Mg2+ in corundum and Al3+ in periclase. The interfacial layer of spinel formed during the reaction increases the diffusion path for the spinel forming cations. This accompanied by ~8% volume expansion retards further reaction resulting in incomplete spinel forming reaction during sintering and hence densification during the reaction cannot be achieved. In order to assess sintering studies with fine particulate oxides that would result in a lower diffusion path, a mechanical mixture of the hydroxides of aluminium and magnesium calcined at 1400ºC to 1600ºC for 1 hour does not result in complete spinel formation (Sarkar, Das, & Banerjee, 2003), which indicates that reaction sintering of stoichiometric magnesium aluminate spinel is retarded by initial reaction forming the interfacial spinel layer. The basic bricks used as linings in non-ferrous pyro-metallurgical convertors are manufactured using magnesia and chrome ore, the sintering of which produce spinel solid solution. This solid solution is a mix of both normal and inverse spinel structures that sinters at temperatures in excess of 1800ºC in air."

Slot raises are relief holes within a stope in longhole stoping methods, designed to provide a free face that facilitates the expansion of the blasted rock during blasting, ultimately achieving the desired fragmentation. Various methods are employed to produce these slot raises, like conventional drop raise drilling, raisebore & V30 drilling. However, slot drilling is generally characterized by high costs and limitations in precision, resulting in unplanned ore losses and dilution. This paper introduces a novel alternative to slot drilling referred to as the "paste slot", designed specifically for paste backfill operations in underground mining. This new method emphasizes considerations in cured paste strength, paste wall removal, and stope dimensions and employs modified drop raises or dumped rings to optimize blast gas effectiveness and material flow. The paste slot method eliminates the need for reamers and reduces the total slot drill meters an average from 650m to only 300m for narrow stopes (3-4m wide). This significantly reduces the stope cycle time, leading to substantial cost savings and increased productivity. This new method was successfully implemented at the underground mines in Canada and Australia, resulting in a 20% reduction in stope cycle time and cost savings of 53,000 USD per slot compared to the conventional slot. This paper discusses the design and execution strategy of the paste slot method in underground paste backfill operations. It highlights the advantages of the method, shares operational insights gained during implementation, and showcases its potential applicability to other mines across Canada and globally.

"It is crucial to understand the mechanism of the collector interacting with the mineral surface in the presence of water molecules, which could influence the relaxation and electronic properties of sulphide mineral surface due to the proximity effect for narrow band gap of semiconductors. The adsorptions of three typical collector molecules (xanthate, dithiocarbamate and dithiophosphate) on the sulphide mineral surfaces in the absence and presence of water molecule have been simulated by density-functional theory (DFT). The calculated results show that the adsorptions of collectors on clean mineral surface in vacuum are not in agreement with the observed flotation behaviours. The presence of water molecules has a great influence on the adsorption of collectors. The analysis of density of states of the mineral surface atom suggests that the adsorption of water molecules could influence the electronic properties of mineral surface and consequently influence the adsorption between the surface and the collector molecule.INTRODUCTIONIn the separation of multi-metal sulphide ores, the selectivity of a collector is a key factor for the efficient recovery of the aimed mineral. Xanthate, dithiocarbamate (DTC) and dithiophosphate (DTP) are the most common collectors used in the flotation of sulfide minerals. Generally, xanthate exhibits powerful collecting property but lack of selectivity. While dithiophosphate and dithiocarbamate show the good selectivity in the lead and copper sulphide mineral flotation. The mechanisms of these collectors interacting with the sulphide mineral had been attracted many attentions and several mechanism based on experimental results had been reported (Chander & Fuerstenau, 1974; Fuerstenau, 1990; Raju & Forsling, 1991; Crozier, 1991; Bradshaw, Cruywagen & O’Connor, 1995; Guler, Hicyilmaz, Gokagac & Emekci, 2006). However, the micro-mechanisms of the selectivity of these three thiol collectors on different sulphide mineral surfaces are not fully understood."

In hydrometallurgical minerals processing slurries are often processed at very small grind sizes and high solids concentrations. This normally results in flow anomalies of such slurries. Due to flow limits or yield stress the slurry tends to stagnate close to the vessel bottom, the walls and at any internals. The main mixing task therefore generally is not suspending of the solids but the homogeneous blending of the entire vessel volume. If not considered during the agitator design only a fraction of the vessel contents will be mixed. Therefore the knowledge of the slurry rheology as well as the variations in process parameters is vital to design e.g. storage or surge tanks. The integral mixing solution considers the motor power, the choice of the impeller type and number, the impeller diameter as well as the design of the baffles and feed and discharge positions.

"This paper presents an application of the use of synthetic ores to study gold recovery by gravity. Three case studies are presented: the first focuses on the use of tungsten to study applications of Knelson Concentrators for upgrading gravity concentrates; the second on tungsten again, in this case to study the performance of a 86 Falcon Concentrator; and the third on lead to mimic gold's grinding behaviour.It is shown that the use of synthetic ores with metallic substitute for gold is not only expedient, but it can also lead to an increased understanding of separation and grinding mechanisms, because of the more accurate results and controlled particle shapes. The case studies highlight the problems associated with gold particle flakiness and gangue density. The grinding behaviour of malleable materials is shown to be complex, as particles can migrate to coarser size classes by flattening and cold welding, and to finer size classes by folding and actual breakage.IntroductionThe title of this contribution is not entirely misleading. "Nickel ores are divided into two types: sulfide deposits and lateritic deposits. About 60% of nickel resources are found in laterite ore, while the remaining 40% is contained in sulfide ore. Laterite ore is usually processed via pyrometallurgical means or through hydrometallurgical techniques that include acid leaching and metal value recovery from solution. In this study, copper and nickel adsorption by Dowex M4195 ion exchange resin from an acidic sulfate liquor was investigated. The acidic sulfate liquor was collected from an atmospheric leaching process (AL) of laterite ore. Ion exchange experiments were conducted in a batch system by varying parameters such as pH, time, metal concentration and temperature. Initially, mono-elemental synthetic solutions of nickel and copper were used in the experiments and then a synthetic solution simulating AL liquor was tested. Test results showed that the resin exhibited high selectivity towards copper and nickel, however, a high concentration of iron in the synthetic AL solution interfered with the recovery of nickel and cobalt by the resin.INTRODUCTION Nickel is one of the most important industrial metals in the world. It is widely used in industrial applications, such as the production of stainless steel, magnets, electroplating and special alloys (Dizge et al., 2009). The main sources of industrial nickel production are sulphide deposits; only 40% of industrial production uses lateritic ores. However, it is estimated that 60% of global nickel resources are found in nickel laterite deposits (Kuck, 2016). Since industrial nickel demand continues to grow, the development of new technologies for the extraction of nickel from laterite ores has become an interesting research topic (Agatzini-Leonardou, 2009)."

"The smelter is described by area; feed preparation, continuous furnace line, gas handling and auxiliary systems, blister refining, Hazelett casting of thin anodes, and scrap remelting. Early smelter campaign data is presented and compared to design. Some modifications to the basic design of the furnaces and gas trains are indicated, with their respective impacts on improving smelter performance.Plant compactness, the use of jumbo tanks, and a highly automated electrode handling system are featured in the refinery description, with brief coverage of the liberator and slimes leaching sections. Early experience in refining thin regular Hazelett anodes, and submersible pump recovery of raw slimes are relayed, together with automatic stripping from titanium blanks.Refinery tonnages and operating parameters are given showing the relatively trouble-free attainment of refinery design performance.IntroductionPrevious papers and articles ( 1), (2) ,(3 ) have described the metallurgical facilities serving the copper-zinc-silver Kidd Creek orebody located near Timmins, Ontario. For convenience a brief review of their mid-1983 operating status is presented.The concentrator, originally designed for 9,000 short tons, was commissioned in late 1966. It can now comfortably process over 13,000 metric tonnes per day largely as a result of the addition of a fourth circuit in 1978."

"The Special Standard Surge bin at Agrium’s Vanscoy Potash Operations (VPO) has been plagued with flow problems and wear, and corrosion issues for it’s entire working life. Investigation showed that the carbon steel construction, bin geometry, and resultant funnel-flow pattern were directly responsible for production losses and disproportionate maintenance and capital costs. Potash enters this bin at between 140°C and 165°C, but the stagnant potash outside the active flow channel was much cooler, allowing moisture to migrate toward the outer regions, which caused corrosion of the walls and reduced live capacity as the potash in this area hardened and built up on the walls over time.A 2013 inspection revealed holes and paper-thin areas in the lower cylinder wall sections and in the conical hopper. The only thing preventing major leaks and even a potentially catastrophic failure was the buildup of stagnant hardened product on the cone walls. It was concluded that the cone had reached the end of its life and required replacement. VPO’s original plan was to replace the cone in kind and repair the cylinder as necessary; however, a failure-mode and bin-performance investigation combined with a lifecycle- cost analysis indicated it would be better to redesign the hopper.For success in retrofit projects, it is essential at the design stage to consider the bulk solid flow properties and the operating environment involved. Because education in this area is not offered at a university level, engineers often do not fully appreciate the effects of the flow properties of bulk solids on bulk material handling equipment.Jenike & Johanson conducted flow properties tests on samples of potash and using the data, redesigned the bin and the feeder. After the modifications, VPO’s surge bin provides safer, more reliable operation with a much longer predicted working life. Using this retrofit as an example, we aim to provide a general understanding of bulk solids flow theory and highlight the importance of customizing the design to the appropriate flow properties in the cost effectiveness, reliability, and safety of a bulk material handling system."

"This chapter outlines the organization of mine/ mill complexes in Canadian mining companies. Many factors unique to the Canadian mining industry will affect the design of the organization in the future: geographic location, the size and the type of orebody, etc. Mining companies cannot choose where new operations will be located, that is dictated by the location of the orebody. New mines are seldom started near established communities. Rather, the towns usually grow up near the mines. The remoteness of most Canadian mining operations has caused severe problems in attracting and/ or retaining all levels of employees. This means that training has a high priority within each operation.Another factor affecting mine/ mill organizations is the size of the operation. Larger operations generally require more departments and increased specialization to manage equipment and manpower effectively. Thus, for mine/mill complexes, organizational charts are less standardized than in other industries. It is often necessary to organize around the work force rather than develop a chart and then acquire the trained personnel to fill the diagrammed positions.The information presented in this chapter has been derived from the responses received from a survey of Canadian mining operations.Principles of OrganizationOrganization can be defined as deployment of personnel to accomplish definite goals. In the mining industry, the major goals are typically the projected number of tons and grade of ore mined on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. Organizing involves establishment of authority relationships with provisions for both vertical and horizontal co-ordination within the company structure. Vertical co-ordination is the delegation of responsibility and communication of goals and reporting of progress between the supervisor and subordinate. Horizontal co-ordination is communication between departments at positions of equal authority to determine methods of achieving predefined goals. The organization structure must reflect the objectives and plans of the company, and must clearly define areas of authority.Two criteria for effective organization are departmentalization and manpower planning."

The text describes the local mineral aggregate resources, extractive activity and characteristics of the ""Selected Deposits"". The first map shows the known sand and gravel resources and their quality. The second map indicates selected sand and gravel resources of primary, secondary and tertiary significance. The third map indicates both bedrock resources and bedrock areas suitable f or extraction. These maps and the text are prepared in a formal suited for use by planning personnel.Recently, the Aggregate Resources Inventory Program has undergone evolutionary changes. New sources of data are being utilized in the inventory reports; in particular, detailed field assessment by inspecting, sampling, drilling and backhoe pitting. Liaison and joint assessment with district and regional Mineral Resources staff of the Ministry of Natural Resources, and personnel of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, are key components of the Program.Twenty-two reports were available to the public as of December 1980, with a further thirty-six awaiting publication. Our present production rate is 3.5 reports per month. The reports appear to be well accepted by the municipalities and have proven effective in conserving prime aggregate resource areas.IntroductionThe urbanization of Southern Ontario has resulted in a major increase in the production of industrial minerals, such as sand, gravel, clay, shale, gypsum and stone, for use as cru shed aggregate, building stone, lime and cement.Although mineral aggregate deposits are plentiful in Southern Ontario, they are fixed-location, non-renewable resources. The potential for extractive development is usually greatest in urban fringe areas where land-use competition is extreme. Comprehensive planning and resource management strategies are required to make the best use of available resources, especially in those areas experiencing rapid development. Such strategies must be based on a sound knowledge of the total mineral aggregate resource base at both local and regional levels."

"The material presented in this paper will be subject to modification as new data become available, but it is presented in the hope that it will inspire more intensive mineral exploration and geologic studies of what appears to be one of Canada's richest mineral provinces. A metallogenic province 400 by 150 miles in extent, lying mostly northeast of Tintina trench, encompasses most of the base metal deposits of Yukon, as well as deposits of other metals. Its main features are northwesterly trending arcuate fold belts, with several orogenic axes, which include most of the metamorphosed rocks, granitic intrusives and mineralization; and which are modified by regional uplifts, northwest-striking fault trenches, and lesser transverse folding and faulting.The main base metal occurrences and their regional controls are summarized briefly. Most of the replacement-type deposits are localized in late Proterozoic to early Paleozoic rocks, particularly Lower Cambrian -probably because these are the most physically and chemically favourable hosts encountered in an appropriate temperature and pressure environment; perhaps because of early age of deposition. Most of the deposits also occur near heat sources or intrusives with associated structural uplift, which has, moreover, served to expose the older rocks. They also tend to occur near known or suspected regional fault trenches, such as Tintina, Macmillan and Hess, although this relationship may be fortuitous. In detail, they may be localized in fold axes, flat-lying beds or other appropriate structural traps. Vein-type deposits are fracture-controlled and localized by dilational localfties, the competence of wall rocks and ""damming"" effects.In the Anvil district, large stratiform iron-zinc-lead replacement deposits lie parallel to gently plunging flex-ures in phyllite in a zone parallel to the Tintina trench, along the southwest flank of the arch-like Anvil batholith. About 80 million tons of massive sulphide ore probably existed before erosion of the Faro orebody, the Vangorda deposit could have been of similar magnitude before erosion and much more tonnage probably remains to be discovered in the district. The Anvil deposits may differ from others found to date in Yukon, but resemble the Sullivan orebody of southeastern British Columbia in their large size, localization in essentially non-limy peptic to arena-ceous host rocks of Proterozoic or early Paleozoic age and proximity to the Rocky Mountain -Tintina trench sys-tem. These features suggest an origin from primordial subcrustal sources.More major ore deposits, not only of lead, zinc and copper but probably of other metals as well, will no doubt be found in similar environments in Yukon or Alaska. Thus, the base metal province of Yukon offers challenging opportunities for prospecting, development, field studies and basic research."

"As shortage in the supply of mineral commodities become more probable, there is an increasing need for reliable and comparable reserve/resource data. It is therefore necessary to standardize the traditional classification procedure by quantifying the three basic criteria in resource evaluation: economic feasibility, geologic assurance and recovery. For the portion of fairly well documented deposits and as far as their geologic parameters are concerned, geostatistical methods can considerably improve the quality of ore classification. In respect of economic feasibility and recovery, approved geostatistical methods can be introduced directly into the classification procedure. The concept of geologic assurance, however, requires a new interpretation in terms of geostatistical error spread. As the ""risk"" in estimating an ore parameter is also a function of the respective block size, it is reasonable to define not only upper limits for the risk intervals for each class of uncertainty, but also block dimensions which reflect the typical stage of planning associated with the different ore categories. An algorithm has been developed to block out areas inside a mine or a large panel which satisfies the constraints of an ore category in respect of the risk intervals of a parameter and in respect of their size. The method has been computerized and is demonstrated on a massive copper-nickel deposit.IntroductionFacing an uncertain future with respect to the demand and supply of mineral commodities, both governmental authorities and the mining industries show an increasing interest in a useful framework for the assessment and classification of the remaining mineral resources"". This is reflected by the recently published appraisal and classification scheme of the United Nations as well as by the new or revised classification systems of the USA; Canada or Australia. Moreover there are various classification schemes which are currently discussed in major mining companies."

The mine and concentrator of Cyprus Anvil Mining Corporation are situated in south-central Yukon, some 120 miles north of Whitehorse. The large lead-zinc concentrator employs conventional crushing and grinding , followed by differential flotation, to produce selective lead and zinc concentrates, as well as a mixed lead-zinc (bulk) concentrate. Since the commencement of operations in 1969, the concentrator has undergone expansions and modifications which have increased the capacity to 10,000 tons per day, and afforded some metallurgical improvements.

In the fall of 1961, Cominco dis-carded its long-established system of feeding the lead blast furnaces by narrow-gauge tram and V-cars, and installed an elevated monorail bucket system. This system automatically loads buckets of sinter, along with the correct proportion of coke, and delivers them to any of several designated furnaces. Direct labour usage has been reduced by nine men per day; improved coke proportioning has been achieved; and a major safety hazard has been eliminated. Introduction I N THE fall months of l 961. the system of feeding the lead blast furnaces at the Trail, B.C., smelter of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited was altered from the tradition-al narrow-gauge railway and V-car method to one employing mono-rail carriers. "The combination of A C induction motor and flu id coupling, of either the fixed or variable filling type, constitutes a simple, low cost, highly reliable drive unit, with many applications in the mining field.The paper will, however, concentrate on the variable filling fluid coupling in three principal applications-conveyor starting, infinitely variable speed control for slurry and slimes pumping and dewatering pumps for deep mines. Fluid couplings can be used with standard or custom-built control gear equipment, ranging from the most simple, time-based open loop types, to those having the latest microprocessor techniques.IntroductionThe first industrial applications of fluid couplings included their use in the mining field as hydraulic slip regulators for flywheel generating sets. These installations, usually rated at around 1700 to 2500 hp, were located at mine shafts where the electrical grid transmission lines were not strong enough to cater for the peak power demands of the cage winding cycle. In Canada, the first two significant examples of variable filling fluid couplings for mining were on conveyor drives, at Steep Rock Mines Limited, closely followed by the major iron ore handling term inal on the St. Lawrence River at Sept-Iles. "The Trout Lake stockwork molybdenum deposit is temporally and spatially related to the emplacement of a late Cretaceous granodiorite-tonalite stock in southeastern British Columbia and contains an estimated 49 million tonnes grading O.I9% MoS2- No metal zonation patterns are apparent, with the exception of peripheral tungsten skarn, and exploration was guided largely by geological interpretation. It is typical of the granodiorite, or fluorine-poor type of molybdenum deposit. Molybdenite is contained within a quartz-feldspar vein stockwork and coeval dissemination in igneous (and less commonly metasedimentary) hosts. In general, molybdenite is strongly associated with alkali feldspars, but in detail it is intimately associated with incipient muscovite replacement of albite and K-feldspar; veins that lack feldspars are also typically barren of molybdenite. These textures suggest that fe/dspathic alteration (and precipitation in veins) was an important precursor to mineralization, and the occurrence of similar textures elsewhere (e.g. Henderson) suggest that early feldspathic alteration is important to the genesis of molybdenum deposits in general. Molybdenite deposition at Trout Lake was preceded by contact metamorphism, skarn and potassic alteration, and was overprinted by muscovite-ankerite (phyllic) alteration. Only moderate temperature changes are recorded by the metamorphic and alteration mineral assemblages (350°C to 450°C}; however, with time, fluids became increasingly more acidic and enriched in C02- In light of the intimate molybdenitemuscovite intergrowths, the decrease of pH probably exerted a major control on mineralization.IntroductionGranite-hosted molybdenum deposits can be classified in terms of the composition of the related intrusion, e.g., the granodiorite and granite types of Mutschler et a!. (1981), or the calc-alkaline, alkali-calcic, and alkalic types of Westra and Keith (1981). They have also been classified on the basis of their fluorine contents (Theodore and Menzie, 1984) with the fluorine-rich and -poor varieties roughly corresponding to granite- and granodiorite-type deposits, respectively. For economic reasons, most exploration and research has concentrated on the high-grade/large tonnage granite-type of deposit, exemplified by Climax. F1uorine-poor, granodiorite-type deposits are, however, the most common type in Canada and have been mined in the past (e.g., Endako). In this paper, the authors summarize the research that has been carried out on the fluorinepoor Trout Lake deposit (Boyle and Leitch, 1983; Linnen, 1985; Linnen and Williams-Jones, 1987; 1990) and use what has been learned to develop guidelines for the future exploration of fluorinepoor, granodiorite-type molybdenum deposits."

ABSTRACT This paper briefly reviews the gravity recovery between conventional and centrifugal gravity separators. The advantages of semicontinuous gravity separators will be discussed, as will techniques for upgrading the gravity concentrates. The research efforts in optimizing semicontinuous gravity separators will be recalled. An innovative gravity circuit for eliminating or minimizing the use of complex processing schemes will be reviewed. Ongoing gold gravity research has revealed that gold particle shape transformation is one of the main factors explaining the lower recoveries of the plant units. Efforts to devise possible remedies for improving plant gravity recovery will be discussed.
