"This paper describes a highly versatile variable speed unit with a torque multiplication feature as a direct replacement for a fluid coupling .The unit is comprised of a modulating clutch with torque converter and lock-up options.The UCD does not start or stop the motor. This paper explores the interpretation and application of Particle Size Distribution (PSD) curves in optimizing blast design and enhancing downstream operations. The study looks at important factors like D50, D80, fines content, and the uniformity index to show how PSD curves affect the efficiency of different mining processes. The first section of this paper discusses the impact of blast design parameters such as burden, spacing, and explosive energy on the resulting PSD, highlighting their significance for downstream operations like crushing, and material handling. The section concluded that proper alignment of PSD with downstream size classes, like primary crusher inlet sizes, among others, can result in substantial cost reductions and productivity gains. The second part presents a case study from dstgroup aggregate quarry in northern Portugal, utilizing fragmentation analysis to evaluate blast performance and promote continuous improvement. The section specifically examines the effect of stemming material size on blast fragmentation, comparing the impact of using aggregate with a D80 of 12.32 mm versus a D80 of 21.94 mm. The D80 value represents the particle size at which 80% of the stemming material is smaller, making it a critical parameter in evaluating the stemming's effectiveness in confining explosive energy. The drilling and blasting designs were meticulously planned using O-PitDev and O-PitSurface software to ensure accuracy in blast parameters and layout. To assess the fragmentation resulting from these different stemming material sizes, the study utilized WipFrag 4 software. The software allowed for precise measurement of particle size distribution after the blast, as well as a detailed comparison between the two stemming sizes. Results from the analysis indicate that using bigger-sized stemming material led to improved blast confinement, which in turn resulted in better fragmentation compared to the smaller-sized material. The reviewed blast videos demonstrate that the larger aggregate effectively contained the explosive energy within the borehole, thereby reducing premature venting and directing more energy towards breaking the surrounding rock mass. This led to finer fragmentation with D80 = 1240.1 mm, D50 = 685.9, and Dmax = 2580 mm, which is advantageous in downstream operations like crushing and milling. On the other hand, the smaller stemming material (D80 = 21.94 mm) did not confine the explosive energy as efficiently, resulting in coarser fragmentation (D80 = 1327.37 mm, D50 = 750.76, and Dmax = 2370 mm) and reduced overall blast efficiency. These findings highlight the significant influence of stemming material size on blast performance and fragmentation outcomes.

Cobalt is an essential metal considering its numerous industrial applications. The demand for the metal is increasing due to its wide range of use in, for example, rechargeable batteries and as an alloying element in super alloys. Cost effective production of Co is critical. Electrowinning from aqueous sulphate solutions is the preferred technology available for the production of Co. Attempts are being made to produce uniform, smooth and bright deposits of cobalt metal. Use of organic additives in the electrolytic bath improves current efficiency and deposit morphology of the metal. We investigated the effect of quaternary amines TEABr, TPABr and TBABr during cobalt electrowinning from aqueous sulphate solutions. Among the additives studied, TEABr yielded the best results. Smooth and bright deposits of cobalt were obtained at low concentration of TEABr (10 mg/L) maintaining a very high current efficiency of 99.6%. X-ray crystallography indicated that (100) is the most preferred plane of crystal growth.

This paper deals with the power plant at Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Ltd., Cassiar, B.C. It discusses the units installed in the plant, the distribution of power and the costs involved. The efficiencies and economics of this power plant are considered to be somewhat better than average. Introduction C ASSIAR Asbestos Corporation's power plant had its inception in 1952 with a 15-by 15-ft. log cabin containing two International Harvester diesel generator sets of 50 kw. total generating capacity. Over the years, it has grown to its present size -an 80 by 82 ft. by 35-ft.-high rigid-frame Butler building housing eight 2,300-volt diesel generating sets, a 2,300-volt distributing switchboard, a 550-volt auxiliary panel, three air compressors, six heat exchangers and other related equipment. "The Mineral Research Centre of the Quebec Department of Energy and Resources has worked extensively on the development of a dry process to extract pure mica flakes from a phlogopite ore. The liberation of mica from the gangue is effected basically by impact crushing, and the ground ore is screened into several fractions, each having a fairly narrow range of grain size. Each sized fraction is then fed to an air separator where heavy grains are separated from light flaky grains. Heavy fractions are returned to hammer mills where gangue minerals are ground finer and blocky mica particles are exfoliated. A second stage of screening is performed and each fraction is sent to an air separator. This sequence is repeated until mica products are virtually free of gangue. These different fractions are then treated in a cage mill in which mica flakes undergo a more orderly exfoliation along cleavage planes. The ground mica is again submitted to a final screening stage, after which each fraction constitutes a final commercial product.This process permits the recovery of about 70% of the mica contained in the ore. The over-all process will be described along with technical details of each unit operation. Recent work on a wet grinding method to produce very fine mica will also be discussed.IntroductionRecords of production of mica in Quebec date back to 1886. Production has been more or less continuous since that time, with peak activity during the war years. Production was interrupted in 1966, but started again in 1972 when Marietta Resources and Laviolette Mining and Metallurgical Corporation started their joint operation in Canton Suzor, northwestern Quebec. Mica deposits of more or less importance exist in different parts of Quebec, of which three have attracted attention in recent years: the Canton Suzor deposit, the Canton Lamy deposit and the Canton Chasseur deposit. The Suzor orebody was first identified by Carl Faesler in 1936, who described the rock as ""brown biotite in flakes half an inch in diameter, with interstitial augite, apatite and feldspar""."

"A major geomechanical study was conducted for one of the UAE onshore oil fields with the purpose of studying reservoir rock properties and stress distribution, based on which a 3D coupled reservoir geomechanical model was built. This model was later used for wellbore stability analysis and for analyzing the effect of fractures on future reservoir production performance, including fracture deformation and permeability evolution occurring due to reservoir depletion and resulting changes in local stress field. The subject of this study was a complex fractured Upper Cretaceous carbonate reservoir characterized by high degree of heterogeneity, both vertically and laterally. Wellbore instability related drilling problems were encountered while drilling the wells in this field. The problems were mainly in drilling the horizontal wells, including breakouts and mud losses. Experimental results of laboratory tests are summarized in this paper whereas wellbore stability analysis and formulation of a 3D geomechanical model that was built for that purpose is summarized in a sister paper (Part II).A suite of tests reported includes tensile strength, uniaxial and triaxial compression and permeability under stress at simulated reservoir conditions. All tested rocks have been grouped into twelve test units and reservoir geology, rock types and challenges related to designing a viable sampling and testing program for a big reservoir are discussed first followed by sample selection criteria and details of the testing program. All test units showed brittle behavior at zero confinement and some samples showed similar behavior at low confining stresses. With confining stress increase, the behavior gradually turned to plastic but some samples showed features of ductile behavior even at low confinement.Obtained experimental data have been summarized in the form of strength criteria and correlations. The Mohr-Coulomb strength equations were obtained for each test unit and also for the averaged values. It was noticed that triaxial compressive strength (TCS) increases with decreasing porosity or increasing density but their influence on TCS is getting smaller with confining pressure increase. Good correlation of porosity and density with Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), friction angle, cohesion and tensile strength has been noticed and there was an increasing trend between the confining pressure and TCS. Rock type (mud or grain supported) was not influencing the TCS as much as porosity and density and the two lithologies encountered affected TCS approximately in the same way. These results and correlations are summarized and explained in this paper. They were further used in the numerical modelling part (Part II) of this paper, Hozayen et al. (2015). It is also concluded that rock lithology is not a decisive factor and mechanical properties of tested rocks should be rather considered dependent on porosity and permeability. This helped greatly in reducing the number of tests that had to be performed."

Agricolau: cited examples of gravity concentration, crude examples admittedly, being practiced over 3000 years ago. However, gravity concentration is not dead. Far from it. As recently as 1978 it was reported that the total mineral tonnage treated by this process in the United States was greater than that processed by flotation. "A very conductive zone was revealed in 1977 and 1978 by magnetotelluric (MT) measurements carried out near Ste-Mathilde, 6 km northeast of La Malbaie . In order to identify the structure causing the anomaly, thirty-five MT soundings were recorded in 1980 and 1981 on and around the conductor within a radius of4 km. Results confirmed that the conductor is of limited extent (less than 2 km by 0.4 km). The proposed model is a highly conductive vertical slab, the top of which is within 200 m from the surface. At a depth of approximately 825 m this structure joins a conductive layer which extends to the northwest but not to the southeast. The large conductivities and the depths involved can only be explain ed by a fractured zone flooded with electrolytic solutions, by graphite veins or by metallic mineralization (sulphides). The former seems to be the most likely hypothesis because an EW fault running across this zone could have allowed percolation of water and the leaching of disseminated pyrite out of a mylolisthenite filling the fault.IntroductionLa Malbaie is located 130 km northeast of Quebec City on th e North Shore o f the St. Lawrence River (Fig. I). Four major groups o f rocks have been mapped in this area: charnockitic rocks to the west , granitic rocks in the north east and southeast, gneiss and pegmatites northwest and south of La Malbaie , and Paleozoic sediments in the Clermont-La Malbaie Valley and along the shore of the St. Lawrence River (Rondot, 1966). Two major features dominate the structure of the region: Logan ' s line , a major thrust fault beneath the St. Lawrence which separates the Grenville Province to the north from the Appalachian regime to the south, and the Charlevoix Crater , a large Paleozoic impact crater that created an almost perfect annula r structure centred on Mont des Eboulements (Rondot, 1970). Ste-Mathilde is a village lying 6 km northeast of La Malbaie, just outside the ring-like graben zone caused by readjustments after meteorite impact. The survey area spreads over a granite body which is more than 2 km long and 0.6 km wide, surrounded by a wide migmatite zone which is injected by many bodies of pegmatite, the latter likely related to the granite body (Fig. 2). A zone of leptynites lies west of the area. An east-west trending fault (FA1) related to the Charlevoix Crater runs mid -way across the survey area; a second parallel fault (FA2) south of FAI separates the gneissic rocks from the Paleozoic sediments. The overburden is usually thin with outcrops frequently encountered except for the centre of the survey are a where 10 m of glacial sediments are expected (E. Gaucher, 1982, personal communication)."

Canadian copper, nickel, zinc, lead and molybdenum mines are characterized by the mining of ores from which more than one metal is recovered. During the 1980s, approximately 15% of the gold, 25% of the zinc, 30% of the copper, 55% of the molybdenum, 80% of the silver and 90% of the lead produced from Canadian mines were produced as co-products and by-products of base metal mining operations. This trend is not expected to change significantly in the near future. The presence of co-products and by-products affects the level of production and the level of revenue from base metal mines in several ways: (I) in general, production of one base metal cannot be expanded or cut back without affecting the amount of production of another metal;(2) the commercial success of certain base metal mining operations depends on the substantial bonus revenues from co-products and by-products; (3) the quality and economic viability of many ore deposits are significantly improved by the presence of co-products and by-products; and (4) while coproduction is critical to the survival of some mines, bonus revenue from by-products can also be life saving to others during economic downturns. For these reasons, deposits with significant co-product or by-product values are likely to continue to be significant targets for exploration and for acquisition.

"Total Quality Management (TQM) is becoming a reality in the mining industry. Widely adopted in the manufacturing and services industries, TQM has become the operating style of choice in numerous mining companies across the Americas and Australia. Iron Ore Company of Canada, Inco, MSA, Graniterock, Magma Copper, and CRA's Hamersly Iron - all are pioneers of TQM. These companies and others are confronting the challenges of implementing TQM and are managing the changes required of their people and cultures. What these companies are doing, why they are doing it, and how they are successfully managing the changes are the subjects of this paper.Driving the need for change in these organizations are a host of issues, some of which all mining companies are facing. Requirements from customers for ISO 9000 certification is becoming one of the initial motivators for Total Quality Management. These standards, commonly used in manufacturing throughout the European Community (EC), emphasize quality in the processes that create outputs, instead of just the outputs themselves. Iron Ore Company of Canada, for instance, responding to the requirement of one of its customers, British Steel, has become one of the first mining companies to meet the quality standard. Suppliers who meet the standards are highly desirable to customers who are themselves operating under the ISO or their national quality guidelines."

"In the mining industry time is critical as production depends on the speed of the mining cycle. During the mining process, the time required to re-open access for the next phase of an underground heading is a key point that strongly depends on the ability of the selected ground support technique to promptly ensure the safety of workers. Fiber reinforced dry-mix shotcrete has been proven to be an efficient and well adapted technique, able to produce a ground support material with the required energy absorption or flexural toughness in a single application phase. In this context, this paper demonstrates the possibility of significantly speeding up the mining process by using a new fiber reinforced dry-mix shotcrete. The new fiber reinforced dry-mix shotcrete is capable of developing flexural toughness in only 24 hours that is equivalent to what is typically achieved after 28 days using current fiber reinforced drymix shotcrete technology.INTRODUCTIONShotcrete is often used for ground support when using the drill and blast method or other tunnelling methods. But before re-opening access for the next phase of the underground heading, the applied shotcrete is required to reach a minimum compressive strength and in case of fiber reinforced shotcrete, a minimum flexural toughness (energy absorption) in order to ensure the safety of the workers going into the heading. Combined with bolts, the use of conventional fiber reinforced shotcrete becomes an interesting method for ground support as it is applied very soon after excavation and works to stabilize ground movements (Bernard E. S., 2009). In this case, the toughness development of fiber reinforced shotcrete becomes an important feature of the material when looking to speedup the mining cycle. However, early re-entry criteria in underground openings are difficult to ascertain as the load carrying capacity of fiber reinforced shotcrete is usually assessed after 7 or 28 days. For this reason, re-entry criteria varies from one mining area to another and are usually based on compressive strength requirements. For example, in northern Ontario, Canada, one of the current practices in the mining industry consists of allowing safe re-entry once fiber reinforced shotcrete has developed a compressive strength of higher than 4 MPa (Dufour, O’Donnell, & Ballou, 2003). Flexural toughness requirements on fiber reinforced shotcrete are also typically based on evaluation after 28 days."

In this research, we devised a measurement method using total stations (TSs) which have ?the Baum? which is a concentric circle reticle, as substitute for crosshairs. The Baum owes its name to the similarity between the concentric circles and trees (Baum in German). By setting one circle on both of edges of cylinders, operators can set their sights on points on the center line of the cylinders, and also can measure positional coordinates of the points. Also, by measuring two different points on the center line, operators can measure the position and tilt of the axes of the cylinders. Furthermore, we developed a pile driving navigation system. Foundation piles are used for various structures, and their forms are generally cylindrical. Especially, although it is difficult to drive tilted pile foundations, their usage are expected to expand due to their high earthquake resistance. Yet, a method to accurately measure the tilts of piles has not been established. However, we proved that operators can obtain adequate accuracy to control foundation piles through the measurement experiment using this system. Using this system, the information of the pile is measured using a TS, transferred to a PDA, and displayed from the operator?s view of the piling machine.

"Liberation is a key requirement for efficient separation in mineral processing. As a consequence of this an understanding of the inherent textural features of an ore is no longer possible since during the process of liberation, texture is destroyed. Knowledge of key textural features, such as mineral grain size and distribution, prior to breakage processes provides the opportunity to understand the textural drivers for ore hardness. Modern characterisation methods, including automated SEM-based techniques, provide the possibility of measuring mineral characteristics at a range of scales. This paper discusses how textural features of two different ore types in a porphyry copper deposit can be measured and interpreted at a number of scales. Standard breakage tests conducted on the ores indicate that one of the ores can be characterised as hard and the other as soft. The impact of mineral grain size and the presence and scale of vein type structures in the two ores have been used to determine the extent to which these features influence ore hardness.INTRODUCTIONIn order to effectively convert ore into metal, knowledge of both the processing stages and the characteristics of the ore are essential. Prior to the advent of technologies that enabled the fundamental understanding of the sub-process at each stage of processing and the measurement of appropriate ore properties the most effective way to understand how an ore would respond to a process was to put it through that process, for example the way to determine how an ore would break was to first break it. Existing comminution models seek to predict the size distribution of rock fragments as the result of applied energy based on knowledge of the rock strength. It is common for these models to consider the rock as homogeneous and despite providing important data for the design and optimisation of industrial comminution circuits these models are only applicable within a narrow range of operation. In order for reliable predictive models to be developed that account for the inherent ore characteristics, a step change is required in the type of measurements that are carried out to characterise an ore and the type of data that is extracted and used as model inputs."

"The McMurray formation in the Athabasca oil sands deposits of northern Alberta is part of the world’s second largest proven crude oil reserves. The formation is characterized by stratigraphic layers that correspond to three different depositional environments: Marine, Estuarine, and Fluvial facies. Resource estimation for oil sands has traditionally relied on polygonal and inverse distance schemes. These techniques are simple and straightforward in practice, but they do not permit reliable uncertainty assessment. This paper describes the modelling of the McMurray formation using modern geostatistical techniques.Geostatistical modelling should be performed within homogeneous geological facies. The methodology for geostatistical simulation within each of the identified facies involves: 1) assessing the most appropriate stratigraphic transformation for optimization of the correlation structure; 2) determining representative distributions with declustering and debiasing techniques; 3) modelling spatial continuity of the bitumen grade, fines grade, water saturation, and other petrophysical variables; 4) performing estimation and cross validation as checks against simulation results; 5) performing simulation for uncertainty quantification of bitumen and fines grade; and 6) model checking of simulation results against the input data, and comparisons against the kriged models. These steps are described in detail. The application of these models for uncertainty quantification in support of resource classification is also discussed."

"The International Nickel Company of Canada Limited consumes some 33 ½ millions of gallons of fresh water and reuses more than 100 millions of gallons of water daily. The continuing search for suitable recycle methodology has enabled the Company to put one 25,000 TPD mill on line utilizing recycled water entirely and a second 35,000 TPD mill is under construction which will likewise employ the concept of recycled water. "The addition of Portland cement to hydraulic sand fill has resulted in the production of stable and self-supporting cemented sand fill. The use of cemented fill in the mines of The International Nickel Company has resulted in substantial economies in timber requirements, de-creased dilution of ore and greater flexibility in mining methods.Coupled with special mining techniques, it has permit-ted mining by both cut-and-fill and shrinkage stoping methods to much greater depths than heretofore. The use of cemented sand fill has permitted revisions to undercut-and-fill mining which have significantly improved the efficiency of this method.Automated mixing systems have been developed for preparing cemented sand fill in surface sand plants on a continuous throughput basis. Control of cement-sand mixtures is obtained by the use of a mass flow measuring system and weighing cement feeders."

ABSTRACT: The Kupol project, located in Far East Russia, treats a high-grade, free-milling ore containing 25.5 g/t Au, 298.3 g/t Ag, and 0.5% pyrite,with a P70of 53 microns. Most of the gold occurs as elec-trum and the silver is predominantly present in the forms of acanthite, stephanite, pyrargyrite, andproustite. The mill reached the design throughput of 3,000 tpd six months after start-up. AKnelson con-centratorrecovers10.4% gold and 0.5% silver. Leaching (14.5 hours pre-treatment and 116 hours cyanidation)of gravity tailings is performed with the CANMET Enhanced Leach Process (CELP),using only 490 ppm NaCN (cyanide consumption of 1.1 kg/t). The precious metals are recovered by counter-current decantation and the Merrill-Crowe process. Calcium hypochlorite destroyscyanide and thiocyanate. Overall, gold and silver recoveries for 2008 were 95.4% and 85.6%,respectively (2.8% and7.5% higher than targets). In the first eight months of 2009, gold and silver recoveries were 95.0% and82.6%, respectively. By August 2009, the mill processed 1.42 million tons of ore with production of 1.1 million ounces of gold and 11.3 million ounces of silver. CELP performance was not affected by changes in feed grade and ore mineralogy. Additional modifications to the leaching strategy allowed further reduction in cyanide consumption and effluent treatment costs.

"A new method to predict stope hangingwall failure in underground excavations is proposed. This method compares movement rate for stope hangingwalls, determined from changes in strain or deformation, with changing opening geometry. This geometry is represented by the effective radius factor (ERF), a measure of relative distance to supporting abutments from an opening surface point. This strain-ERF (SERF) approach is applied to an instrumentation program for Brunswick mine near Bathurst, New Brunswick. The SERF method for this case study predicted failure at an ERF of 13.9 m and hangingwall failure actually occurred at an approximate ERF of 12.4 m.RÉSUMÉ Cet article propose une nouvelle méthode permettant de prévoir la rupture de l’éponte supérieure des chambres d’abattage dans les excavations souterraines. Cette méthode compare la vitesse de mouvement des épontes supérieures des chambres d’abattage, déterminée à partir des changements aux niveaux des contraintes ou de la déformation, à la géométrie variable de l’ouverture au jour. Cette géométrie est représentée par le facteur du rayon effectif (ERF, de l’anglais Effective Radius Factor), une mesure de la distance relative jusqu’aux appuis latéraux de soutènement à partir d’un point de la surface d’ouverture au jour. The magnitude of movement measured by extensometers can give an approximation of the load on installed support (Milne, Pakalnis, & Lunder, 1996) and a changing rate of movement can indicate approaching instability."

"The 1994 Quebec Budget included a significant overhaul of the mining duties sys-tem in that province: broadening the base and lowering the rate, all in the name of “ensuring the integrity of the taxation system"" and ""enabling the State to collect fair compensation "". The reforms hit hardest on the small, lightly-capitalized producer, by repealing the basic annual exemption, limiting the refund for losses, and significantly reducing the investment and processing allowances.
