In underground mining, the often unpredictable variability in ground conditions may lead to the application of suboptimal drilling and blasting patterns, resulting in poor performance. Experience and pertinent information to develop and implement improved drilling and blasting strategies can be easily lost due to the lack of means to help engineers store, access and manage this information. The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) through a series of industry funded applied research projects has been developing a system that can facilitate the drill and blast design, analysis, auditing, documentation and data management processes. The system is a hybrid between an information management software module called BMS (Blast Management System) and two design and analysis modules, 2DRing for underground production blasting activities and 2DFace for development blasting activities. A concise description of the software tools and its applications are given in this paper, supported by two case studies. Opportunities to further develop the software are also highlighted, they include options to integrate these tools to existing drilling and blasting automation systems and portable computing technology to facilitate the design, implementation and continuous improvement processes.

China has abundant bauxite resources, but these resources are mostly of a diaspore, which has a feature of low Al2O3 to SiO2 mass ratio, typically ranging from four to six. Compared to other materials, this kind of raw materials consumes more alkaline and energy in the process of metallurgy, and incurred a high alumina production cost. To solve this problem, researchers in China have done a lot of work on removing of the silicon from bauxite. Under the impetus of these works, in 2003, the first flotation plant of diasporic bauxite in the world was constructed in Zhongzhou, Henan, China. Seven years of operating experience shows that this technology can signifi cantly reduce the costs of following-metallurgy processing. These efforts are an important reference for the processing of similar resource. In general, for Western scholars it is diffi cult to fully understand these works because most of them are published in Chinese. In this paper, a detail introduction for the research progress on China bauxite de-silica flotation was presented, these works involved crystal chemistry, wettability of bauxite minerals, collector and modifi er in bauxite fl otation and flotation practice, etc.

A viscosity model has been developed for both completely liquid and heterogeneous, partly crystallised slags in the Al2O3-CaO-æFeOÆ-SiO2 system in equilibrium with metallic iron. The Urbain formalism has been modified to describe the viscosities of the liquid slag phase over the complete range of compositions and a wide range of temperatures. The Roscoe equation has been used to describe the effect of presence of solid suspension (slurry effect) on the viscosity. The parameters of the viscosity model were optimised to describe large experimental data set in the low-order subsystems, as well as in the multi-component system. The computer package FACT was used for prediction of the proportion of solids and the composition of the remaining liquid phase. The model provides a good description of the experimental data (over four thousand experimental points) in liquid phase, and liquid + solid mixtures, over the complete range of compositions and a wide range of temperatures. This model can now be used for viscosity predictions in industrial slag systems. An example of the application of the new model to slag cleaning and reduction smelting processes is given in this paper.

Advanced computer aided geological modelling techniques are now available to the geologist to allow the rapid evaluation of a gold orebody at various stages of its development. The types of grade estimation techniques used change during the various stages as the density of drilling and knowledge of the deposit increases. At the prospect evaluation stage drillhole intercept selection techniques are coupled with preliminary 2D (vein or layer) modelling or 3D block modelling techniques to arrive at a geological resource estimate. At the prefeasibility and feasibility stages more sophisticated 2D and 3D modelling techniques, such as domain controlled grade interpolation with anisotropy, are used along with interactive open pit and underground mine design, to calculate recoverable reserves. At the production stage closely spaced blasthole sample data is modelled quickly and coupled with interactive grade control facilities. Shot volumes, tonnages and grade estimates can be databased to provide reconciliation figures. These modelling techniques are embodied in MINEX-3D, an Australian software system which, with the emergence of the 386-based PC and high resolution (VGA or better) graphics, makes a whole range of advanced geological modelling techniques available to most exploration and mine geologists.

A technology involving separate unit processes for the generation and use of ferric ions for the oxidation of sulphidic minerals has been developed. The technology utilises a stand-alone automated bioreactor for ferric-ion generation (termed SAAB-FIG) and produces a low pH, ferric ion-rich leach liquor with a high oxidation potential. This leach liquor is then employed, in a separate unit process, to oxidise sulphidic minerals and regenerate ferrous iron that may subsequently be recycled to the bioreactor for the continual generation of ferric ions. The technique was successfully applied for the recovery of copper from chalcocite (Cu2S) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), as well as other ores and concentrates containing copper sulphide minerals. Coarse ore, ground ore and concentrates were treated with acidic solutions containing 8 to 12 (g/L) Fe(III) ions at a variety of temperatures. This process yielded over 50 per cent of the contained copper from both chalcopyrite and chalcocite samples. Maximum reaction rates and copper recoveries were found to be highly dependent upon temperature and pH and leach liquors containing bacterial cells displayed little difference in their leaching efficiency when compared to cell-free leach liquors.

Chrome chemicals are commercially produced by the alkali roasting of the chrome-bearing ore chromite with sodium carbonate. In order to ascertain the influence on the extent of reaction of the replacement of Mg(II) for Fe(II) in the chromite spinel structure and the presence of acidic oxides in the gangue material, a series of roasting experiments was conducted using chromite materials from a number of different locations. The roast feeds and products were chemically analysed and the major compounds identified using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope techniques.Mg(II) replacement for Fe(II) in the chromite structure does not appear to restrict the amount of "available" chromium for reaction.Under the test conditions, namely an atmosphere of pure oxygen, finely ground chrome-bearing material, a roast temperature of 950°C and the stoichiometric amount of sodium carbonate to react with the chromite, the yield of water-soluble sodium chromate was able to be expressed as %yield = 104.5 -1.58 × %AI2O3 - 2.23 × %SiO2 for chromite samples containing alumina in the range 7.8 to 27.8 per cent and silica in the range 2.9 to 7.4 per cent.

In case of NATM, mechanical cutting is desirable in view of the original purpose of not spoiling natural ground. As typical tunnelling machines, there are two (2) kinds available: one is "Full Face Excavator" known as TBM (tunnel boring machine), and the other is "Roadheader" known as Part Face Excavator. By the use of the former, accurate profile cut is made possible, but there is a limit in the shape of a cutting section. By the use of the latter, cutting of various sections is made possible, but in order to cut a section economically and accurately, operators are required to have a high level of skill. In this text, we introduce Automatic Controlled Profile Cutting System (hereafter "ACPC" System) developed as a roadheader.

Coal losses and dilution are among a coal mine operators everyday problems. These losses and unwelcome additions are generated primar- ily by the stripping operation and secondly by the coal mining opera- tion. Losses in yield due to preparation plant efficiency are a separate issue although they may be related to the coal mining operation. The losses and dilution can be traced to the following operations: (A) Overburden or Interburden Removal (1) Removal of coal edge by blasting operations. (2) Removal of top of seam by drilling/blasting. (3) Removal of top of seam by stripping equipment. (4) Removal of coal edges by stripping equipment. (5) Dilution due to stripping equipment. (B) Coal Mining (for the case where seams are ripped rather than shot) (1) Coal rib losses. (2) Coal rib dilution. (3) Coal left in floor. (4) Coal left in fault areas. (5) Floor material picked up whilst loading. (6) Spoil material picked up. (7) Spoil material from poor surface clean up. (8) Top of coal losses from final clean up. (9) Dilution from ripping too deep, i.e. into floor below seam. (10) Dilution from interseam parting. The losses apply to both the single seam and multi seam oper- ations although they are more pronounced in the multi seam mines than in a single seam mine due to the position of the coal which is lost. For example in the multi seam case the top seam coal edge loss is final. There is little chance of recovery with the subsequent pass even if the extra rehandle is done. However conversely the lower seam is relatively easy to locate as it has nowhere to go being contained by the lowwall bench.

The northeast-southwest trending ~25 km2 area incorporating Bald Hill is located 18 km northeast of Haast, and 5 - 7 km west of the Alpine Fault in South Westland, New Zealand. The geology consists of Greenland Group greywacke overlain by a Cretaceous-Tertiary sedimentary sequence and fluvio-glacial/marine terrace deposits of Quaternary age. Alluvial gold in Cole Creek, draining west from the summit of Bald Hill, may be derived either from vein mineralisation in basement rocks or from fluvial or marine terraces.   This paper focuses on the potential for in situ gold and base-metal mineralisation in sporadic, siderite-rich quartz veins that cut basement greenschist facies metasediments that have been overprinted by contact metamorphism.   Throughout the area, vein compositions are dominated by quartz and commonly feature zoned plagioclase. Alteration adjacent to veining within the contact aureole is dominated by 1 - 2 mm, coarse grained biotite, with small amounts of sulphide, and is pervaded by abundant siderite veinlets. Outside the aureole, wall rock alteration to veins consists of fine grained chlorite. Trace element XRF analysis has been used to ascertain base metal concentrations within samples of vein and alteration zones collected from throughout the area. Vein and alteration zone mineral assemblages containing <5 per cent sulphide, with low concentrations of As, Cu, Pb and Zn indicate low potential for gold and base-metal mineralisation in the Bald Hill region. Contact metamorphism of Greenland Group basement in the northeast of the region, is likely due to emplacement of a poorly exposed Cr- and Ni- enriched gabbro. The presence of biotite and andalusite in hornfelses indicate contact metamorphism occurred at temperatures >350¦C and at depths <10 km. Widespread vein distribution does not appear to be related to contact metamorphism or gabbro emplacement. Further research is required in order to establish the fluid source from which the veins were precipitated.

It is acknowledged that the analysis of iron ores using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) for major and minor elements is best carried out on fusion discs. This method of sample preparation eliminates mineral and particle size effects which can lead to biased results when using pressed powder pellets. However, the fusion disc method is costly as it requires a high capital investment in platinumware, requires experienced operators and uses expensive fluxes. Also, the dilution effect complicates the analysis of trace elements. For many applications, such as exploration and mining control, the method of XRF analysis of iron ores by pressed powder pellet probably provides data of adequate quality. Kumba Iron Ore, an iron ore producer in South Africa, recognises this and carries out most analyses of iron ore by pressed powder pellet and uses the automated fusion method mainly for certification of in-house calibration standards and quality control (QC) samples that are used for validation of pressed powder pellet method purposes. Automated fusion is also used for analysing the composite export shipping samples. All the other exploration, production, despatching and plant operation samples are done by the pressed powder pellet method. Automation of sample preparation procedures should improve the quality of data for pressed powder pellets. To compare the precision of the three methods of sample preparation and XRF analysis, 20 aliquots of a QC standard were prepared and analysed by each procedure/preparation method. The results and statistical data on the most important elements, Fe, K2O and P, are as shown later in Table 2.Clearly the precision is best for the auto prepared fusion discs, as expected, and worst for the manually prepared pressed powder pellets. However, the data generated from the auto prepared pressed powder pellets compare remarkably well against those from the auto prepared fusion discs.

At Renison Limited, on the West Coast of Tasmania, modern trackless decline mining is practised to exploit the various tin bearing sulphide deposits. With footwall accesses, one of three adaptations of horizontal mechanised cut and fill, 1. unsupported, 2. pillar supported,and 3. unsupported - resuing is used to stope each defined ore block. The stoping method is basically determined by the dip and true thickness of the ore with emphasis on high ore recovery. Extreme flexibility is possible by the selective mining of stope lifts, the consumption of development waste as fill and the utilisation of the same mobile equipment in all phases of production. This has resulted in high productivity and low cost per tonne of ore.

Sample preparation for gold samples, where the distribution and size of gold particles is often irregular, usually demands that a relatively large sample weight is taken to produce a representative sample for analysis. Traditional sample preparation of gold samples incorporated multiple stages of coarse particle size reduction followed by subdivision of the sample prior to final fine pulverising. This technique developed because of the limited equipment options available to laboratories. As a result significant errors are introduced and the final sample size being pulverised is a small fraction of the original sample weight. Three significant developments have occurred in the last 25 years to significantly improve sample preparation of gold samples: 1.  large capacity fine pulverising,2.  fine jaw crushing, and3.  whole sample coarse pulverising. In the mid-1980s an Australian manufacturer developed large capacity pulverising bowls which had the ability to reduce samples with a mass of 1.5 - 3.5 kg to a nominal 0.075 mm product in approximately three to five minutes. Laboratories were able to produce a large homogeneous pulverised sample which significantly reduced the error in sampling. However, exploration and mine samples are usually 7 to 10 kg and the sample requires a subdivision stage following crushing to produce the 3.5 kg for the pulverising step, thus introducing potential for significant error. The development of fine jaw crushing allowed particle size reduction to -2 mm which reduced the subdivision error of the bulk sample prior to fine pulverising. Subdivision of the crushed sample at -2 mm still results in potential sampling errors, where the gold particles are not sufficiently liberated to be representatively sampled. Clearly the best option would be to reduce the particle size small enough to ensure a representative sample prior to final pulverising. Continuous mills offer a partial solution but are relatively slow and subject the sample to differential pulverising prior to subdivision. Clearly this does not provide the best solution for routine laboratory applications where high volumes of samples are to be processed. The recent development of a large capacity coarse pulverising system allows samples of up to 10 kg to be reduced to -0.25 mm prior to subdivision, and fine pulverised to -0.075 mm. Laboratories now have the necessary equipment to perform reliable large capacity sample preparation of gold samples. The exact choice of a sample preparation scheme may still depend on particular ore types but the need for multiple crushing and subdivision stages is redundant.

The excavation of sandstone of generally medium strength for the Liverpool Link Line by Dosco Mark 2A Roadheaders has demonstrated the versatility and good performance of road- headers in suitable rock formations. A description is given of the strata traversed by the tunnels together with descriptions of equipment and crews, excavation sequences, operating difficulties and the results achiev- ed. In addition tunnel construction is des- cribed for a difficult section where there was only O.Sm clearance between invert and a four lane vehicular tunnel below, and O.5m clearance between tunnel crown and a century old sewer above.

During the next five years Denmark will implement a significant reduction in the national CO2 emissions to fulfil the Kyoto Protocol. The energy sector is central for achieving this goal and extensive use of renewable energy is the most important single factor contributing to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. DenmarkÆs renewable energy sources comprise wind energy and biomass. Wood chips and straw are the dominant type of biomass in Denmark. More than 500 000 tons of wood chips are used annually, currently with rapidly growth prospects. This contribution focuses on sampling of wood chips.

Naturally occurring organic plastics have been in use for over 2,000 years. Plastics based on chemically modified organic polymers date back only about 100 years, and those based on synthetic polymers about 50 years. The development of ,these two latter groups up to the present day is outlined, and the basic techniques currently available for polymer-building and modi-fication (blending, copolymerisation, quantitative and qualitative struc-tural control, and'si de-group reactions)-are reviewed.

The comprehensive processing of raw materials and the tendency to waste-free production require the combination of various methods of concentrating mineral resources. Magnetic separation, an ecologically clean method of concentration, is one step in the technological cycle of ore processing, and cleaning and classifying of raw materials. Separators with superconducting magnetic systems cooled by liquid helium are the novel equipment for practical concentration. Recently, high-gradient (HGMS) and open-gradient (OGMS) magnetic separators using the effect of superconductivity have appeared. The separators of the first type are expedient in the head-end of the technological cycle, as they are most efficient for processing of particles 100 ¦m and greater in size. In this case the main task is to obtain pure tailings with a minimum amount of the useful component. This method allows the essential reduction in the cost of the subsequent crushing and grinding, because only the magnetic concentrate is directed to further processing. The separators of the VGMS type are used more efficiently in the final stages of the concentration cycle to condition the end product. The present work is devoted to the theoretical and experimental investigation of the motion of weakly magnetic particles in the working chamber of superconducting separators of the open-gradient magnetic separator (OGMS) and HGMS types. The flat OGMS is equipped by a magnetic system with NbTi racetracks cooled by liquid helium. The chamber is divided into zones by partitions parallel to the plane of the magnetic system. It is shown how, depending on the number of the zones and their depths, the extraction function of the OGMS varies and the transition from the OGMS to the HGMS occurs. The particles 2 mm and less in size are considered. The extraction parameter distribution of the particles was measured for a multicomponent weakly magnetic ore. In their description of the post-mine leaching of galena and marmatite at Broken Hill, Messrs. Garretty and Blanchard1 find themselves unable to account satisfactorily for the fact that the more usual order of solubility of these two minerals is here reversed, and that the galena is leached more rapidly than the marmatite. An explanation of this somewhat unusual phenomena is perhaps provided by the recent work of Garrels.2 Garrels showed that the presence of Cl' ions in Pb-Zn solutions, in concentrations in excess of 0·1 N, rendered the zinc less soluble than the lead. It seems possible that Cl' ions may be present in the underground waters of the North Broken Hill Mine in sufficient concentration to cause such reversal in the relative solubility of the lead and zinc sulphides.Thus the analysis of "water believed to be free from contamination by mine drainage" given by Messrs. Garretty and Blanchard (p. 158 of their paper) is as follows:Total solids in solution 878 grains per gallon...164 grams of Cl per gallon is equivalent to 2· 3394 grams of Cl' per litre, which is equivalent to 0066 N.This concentration is approaching a value sufficient to cause a reversal of the relative solubility of zinc and lead salts; and it seems probable that there will be parts of the ore-body where locally the Cl' concentration will greatly exceed this figure. At such points the lead salts would be more soluble than the zinc salts, so that the galena would be leached more rapidly than the marmatite. With the dilution of such Cl'-rich waters with water containing less Cl', the Cl' concentration would fall below 0·1 N, and the lead would be reprecipitated, while the zinc would stay in solution, as, for example, in the water analysis quoted. The self-organising map (SOM) is an exploratory data mining technique that is both non-traditional and underutilised. Methodologies based on SOM tend to be data-driven and unsupervised, which makes them ideal to assist in the integrated analysis and interpretation of complex and disparate æmineral explorationÆ data sets. While traditional statistical multivariate approaches have difficulty with relationships that are non-linear and data distributions that are not normal, SOM-based data mining procedures are useful in these circumstances. In a SOM analysis each sample is treated as a vector in a data space defined by the variables; and measures of vector similarity, such as the dot-product or Euclidean distance, are used to order or segment a data set into naturally occurring populations. These groupings are positioned as nodes, or groups of nodes, on a 2D rectilinear representation of the multi-dimensional ædata spaceÆ, which is the æself organized mapÆ. While it is common not to include a sampleÆs locational information in the actual SOM analysis, such information can be used to display the spatial location of samples coded by their SOM node or cluster. If one finds there are coherent spatial patterns belonging to samples from particular nodes, or groups of nodes, then there is strong evidence that the technique is determining patterns and relationships within the data that have natural significance. Variations of the SOM technique may be used to perform broad categories of operations, including: 1. outlier identification û for samples belonging to various nodes or grouping of nodes; 2. function fitting, prediction, estimation or imputation û for calibrating relationships between variables and determining replacement values for missing, null or censored values; 3. clustering, pattern recognition or noise reduction û for determining the natural patterns within a data set; and 4. classification û for classifying samples into the clusters determined in three. THE Taranaki oil-field is situated on the western side of the North Island of New Zealand, at about its widest part, and may be said to be the most compact and fertile part of the Dominion, for, with the exception of the. upper half of Mount Egmont and of the ranges adjoining, which absorb 36,000 acres, the whole of the area, miuus what is taken up by the rivers land streams-is suitable for settlement, and certainly two-thirds is good land. The gross area oE the district is 2,417,299 acres.The principle rivers are the Wanganui, Mokau, Waitara, Patea, and Waiwakaiho. Mount Egmont, which is 8260 ft. high, used to be called Taranaki, and from it the district takes its name (the Maori meaning of which is "sloping peak ").

Oroya Mining LimitedÆs Mt Gibson Gold Project, 280 km north east of Perth, is one of Western AustraliaÆs more recent discoveries of a major gold resource. Modern gold mining commenced in 1986, on a shallow laterite reserve of 6.62 million tonnes averaging 1.50 g/t gold. By the end of 1998, mining had progressed from an initial three shallow laterite pits to a series of 14 open pits with maximum depth of 100 m, on three separate trends with a combined strike length of over 10 km. The Project has yielded 868 400 ounces of gold from 16.5 million tonnes of ore at an average recovered grade of 1.64 g/t gold, from near surface laterite, supergene and primary sulfide ores. This includes a 160 m deep underground decline operation which mined 120 000 tonnes at an average grade of 9.1 g/t gold and a four million tonne Dump Leach on a synthetic base which yielded 68 900 ounces. The Project was placed on Care and Maintenance in 1999 pending drilling to refresh reserves. Hosted by strongly tectonised and altered Archaean volcanic rocks within and adjacent to a major regional shear, primary gold mineralisation occurs as structurally emplaced sulfide and quartz lodes. On the main Gibson Trend, multiple zones of mineralisation occur within a zone up to 600 m in overall width. The overall footprint of known mineralisation exceeds 20 km2 and the potentially mineralised domain exceeds 100 km2. The current estimate of a combined resource of 9.4 million tonnes averaging 2.47 g/t gold (749 500 ounces) is derived from a database of 10 500 drill holes, of which only four per cent test below 100 m vertical depth. Ore envelopes which remain open at depth and major gaps in the drilling pattern beyond the currently defined resources promise straightforward potential to define additional resources. Oroya Mining Limited and its joint venture partner Barrick Australia are targeting a major gold mining operation from this potentially world-class mineralised system. Oroya has the exclusive right to produce up to 500 000 ounces and is working toward the completion of a feasibility study into a resumption of mining using the existing 1986-built 1 Mtpa processing plant. The joint venture is in the early stages of testing the depth and lateral potential of the Mt Gibson mineralised system. Mining options currently under review include progressive open pit extension and amalgamation leading to one or more large open pits, and underground operations. It is too early in the development of the Project to offer definitive economic models of potential large-scale mining operations.
