In 1991, the first horizontal raise drill hole in Australia was successfully completed by Australian Raise Drilling Pty Ltd (ARD) at the Perseverance nickel mine of Western Mining Corporation's (WMC's) Leinster Nickel Operations in Western Australia. At that time, WMC were experiencing considerable difficulties in developing the horizontal drill drives through the orebody using conventional drill and blast techniques. Following the success of the initial hole, a further two holes were drilled as part of the evaluation program. The technique has proved so successful that it has been accepted by WMC for on-going development of drill drives at Perseverance.This paper describes the program. It relates how the project evolved, the modifications that were required to the equipment used, the performance experienced during the program and the future of the method in this and other applications.

Up until June 1988, Mount Thorley Coal Handling and Preparation Plant disposed of tailings by two methods. Approximately half of the plant tailings was mechanically dewatered by solid bowl centrifuges mixed with plant reject and was subsequently disposed in mine overburden spoils; the remainder was pumped to tailings ponds. Both future mine planning and environmental constraints could not allow for the long term construction of more tailings ponds so, following evaluation of available dewatering technology, belt press filters were selected for the treatment of tailings in excess of the capacity of the existing solid bowl centrifuges. Commission of the four 2.5 metre wide belt press filters soon showed that marked differences in performance were experienced when treating different coal seams. Further analysis showed that the coal tailings from different seams were quite different in terms of clay mineralogy, and these differences could be correlated with varying degrees of filter performance. Poor filter performance was experienced with coal tailings rich in sodium montmorillinite clays. A number of variables were investigated including in-line mechanical mixing of flocculant and feed slurry, cation exchange reagents such as gypsum, and upstream addition of cationic flocculant. In order to achieve satisfactory performance on the worst tailings, a combination of all of the above was required. In this paper, the reasons for selection of belt press filters and the program of investigations and testwork required to arrive at satisfactory belt press filter performance for the treatment of troublesome bentonitic rich tailings are discussed.

The effects of underground longwall mining on river valleys have come under scrutiny, especially when mining is located underneath catchment areas. As public awareness of mining impacts on the environment increases, there is the need to develop damage mitigation strategies. Results of numerical modelling show that river valley response to underground longwall mining can be simulated and evaluated.

N Longhole Open Stope at The Zinc Corporation Mine was developed in an area with large and continuous tension cracks. These cracks resulted fran widespread block subsidence into previously mined areas. The practical problems encountered and their solutions are discussed together with an outline of a new method of stope wall support using large diameter dowels installed sub-parallel to the stope wall.

Earthen covers are now widely used in the mining industry to control the generation rate and/or release rate of low quality drainage from piles of sulfidic minewastes. Covers are usually designed to reduce the water infiltration rate and in some cases may also reduce the oxygen flux to the underlying sulfides. Engineered covers have only been used since the 1980s, however, and there is very little field data on their performance in the longer term. This lack of information has implications for the degree of confidence that can be placed on the predictions of the environmental impacts of sulfidic minewastes, for the acceptance of close-out criteria by regulatory authorities and for the financial liability of the mining industry. Covers were placed on sulfidic waste rock dumps at the abandoned Rum Jungle uranium mine during 1984 - 1985. These covers were designed to reduce the water infiltration to less than five per cent of incident rainfall by both water shedding and storage-release mechanisms. Regular monitoring by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) demonstrated that the covers performed better than the design criterion for around ten years, but infiltration rates have subsequently increased. There is a 66 per cent probability that the infiltration rate now exceeds five per cent of incident rainfall. The cover on the largest pile, WhiteÆs heap, was sampled in pits dug at eight locations. Sampling was carried out at the end of the monsoonal wet season and again at the end of the ædryÆ season. This, together with laboratory testing, enabled cover performance to be assessed against five criteria: design, construction, cover material characteristics, physico-chemical characteristics and biological characteristics. We are of the opinion that the design of the cover was suitable to achieve the objectives of stability, water shedding, storage-release, and provision of a substrate for vegetation growth. Over most of the surface of the heap, the construction of the covers, drains and erosion prevention structures was in accordance with design specifications. However, several small and localised bare patches on the upper surface of WhiteÆs heap coincide with a reduced cover thickness, which is likely to have been due to poor construction in those patches. The construction of covers on minewastes is dependent on an adequate source of material meeting design specifications. From our limited examination, it appears that there was shortage of material for each of the three zones û a lower impervious clay layer, the moisture storage-release layer and the upper erosion-resistant layer for vegetative growth. An indication of this was that the upper layers in some areas were observed to be thinner than specified. We are of the opinion that this shortage of suitable material has been responsible for some of the changes observed ten years after emplacement. Physical and geotechnical testing indicated that the cover materials no longer meet the original specifications. In particular, the permeability at the 8 locations was found to be greater than specified, by up to several orders of magnitude. The higher permeability may explain the higher observed rainfall infiltration and moisture content of the waste rock. This increased permeability appears to be due to a combination of biological and physical processes û galleries formed by termites and ants and an extensive system of shrinkage/desiccation cracks formed by the development of a polygonal blocky structure involving the entire lower clay layer. The desiccation cracks may fill with coarser illuviated materials and form a conduit through which roots access the underlying waste rock. Measurements were made of oxygen flux into the heap as cover layers were excavated in the pits. They indicated that the full cover currently reduces the oxygen flux to 20 - 23 per cent of that into bare waste and that this reduction seems to be proportional to the cover thickness. It was also found that the oxygen flux into the cover is about four times higher at the end of the dry season than at the end of the wet season and that the difference is due primarily to the difference in moisture content of the cover. Recommendations are made for the design and construction of covers.

For more than 30 years shearer loaders have been the most important winning machines for,longwall mining. While the machines of the first generation had a driving power of only 100 or so kW, the present day shearer loaders may be powered by more than 1000 kW. Daily outputs of 24000 tonnes have now been reached, but this still does not set a limit. If the deposit conditions allow, further increases are possible. This requires the optimum coordination of all system components. For this paper the use of coal plows has been of little import as plows have found no favour, and nor are they likely to do so in today's economics in Australian coal mining.

Acidic and metal-rich waters have been discharging from Sullivan Mine, West Coast, New Zealand since the closure of the mine during the early- 1990s. This has resulted in a decrease in pH from a background of 4.5 to 2.8 and an increase in metallic elements in nearby Rapid Stream. In addition to the chemical effects on Rapid Stream, a study of freshwater macro-invertebrates revealed the absence of most biota downstream from the discharge. An attempt is being made to use the Sullivan Mine as a case study of problem and remediation analysis.

They can similarly provide a basis for incorporating ground conditions into the process.Exploration and mine geologists have a prime role to play in this process, extending their responsibilities further across the geological spectrum, into exploration of ground conditions, analyses of results, and assessments of their implications for mining. Ground conditions are as much a part of the geology of a prospect or mine as its mineralisation, and can have critical imnlicationa for mining.

This paper describes major events in the design, construction, camtissioning and operation of the Elura concentrator. It covers the period fran September, 1974 when laboratory testwork on drill core cotmenced to March, 1983 when the concentrator catmenced operation on run of mine ore following successful completion of initial ccnmissioning tests. The concentrator was designed to treat 1.1 million tonnes of lead-zinc-silver ore per year with a plant availability of 89 per cent. This treatment rate has been achieved for test periods.

A series of petrological studies were carried out on the characteristics of alteration and mineralisation in mainly structural-controlled (Deep Star, Meikle, Deep Post) and predominantly lithological-controlled (Post-Betze-Screamer and West Leeville) gold deposits in the northern district of the Carlin trend, Nevada. Alteration and mineralisation in these deposits are hosted in a sequence of calcareous clastic units of the Devonian Popovich Formation, into which have been emplaced a number of Jurassic intrusions, and syn- to post-mineral Eocene dikes. Four hydrothermal events have been recognised in these deposits: an initial Devonian base metal system and early diagenesis; a Mississippian stage of alteration in conjunction with burial metamorphism; contact and hydrothermal alteration and base metal-gold mineralisation associated with the emplacement of the Jurassic intrusions; and a Carlin-style gold system related to Eocene magmatism.

The Geita gold mines in north-western Tanzania have produced 5 Moz of gold from an estimated endowment of 15 Moz. They are generally classified as typical Archaean orogenic banded iron formations (BIF)-hosted gold deposits in banded iron formations as described by Goldfarb, Groves and Gardoll (2001); Neall and Phillips (1987); Phillips and Powell (1993) and Neall (1987). The controls on gold mineralisation have been reassessed to conclude that Nyankanga, and we conclude that Nyankanga, the largest deposits within the group, developed during a dynamic and protracted deformation history intimately associated with several stages of hydrothermal fluid flow and alteration. The fluid-induced fractures associated with gold mineralisation are primarily manifested as submillimetre to metre-scale fractures and breccias developed preferentially in rocks that have been previously deformed and altered by silicification or seafloor metasomatism. This realisation detracts from the exploration and mining strategies that would solely concentrate on fluid pathways and associated wallrock alteration and veining solely within the BIFs as hosts for economic gold mineralisation.

The Goonumbla district of central-west New South Wales, Australia, hosts four significant porphyry Cu-Au deposits that contain a combined probable ore reserve of 71.7 million tonnes at 1.2 per cent Cu and 0.5 g/t Au. Mineralisation in the Goonumbla deposits is associated with narrow, pipe-like intrusions of quartz monzonite porphyry, in which several intrusive phases have been recognised. Five textural characteristics have been used to distinguish the various intrusive phases recognised in the Goonumbla porphyry deposits: (1) phenocryst abundance; (2) nature of the groundmass; (3 and 4) proportion and mineralogy of the mafic and non-mafic phenocrysts; and (5) the presence or absence of anhedral quartz grains in the groundmass. In addition, each intrusive phase is classified according to its estimated original quartz, alkali feldspar and plagioclase contents. Features common to all of the intrusions are that they contain two types of plagioclase and two or three types of K-feldspar phenocrysts in variable proportions. Most of the intrusions also contain apatite micro-phenocrysts. The groundmass textures range from aphanitic through granular to euhedral K-feldspar in a quartz matrix. With only one exception, all of the intrusive phases recognised are either quartz monzonite porphyry or mafic (>5 per cent mafic minerals) quartz monzonite porphyry. The exception is a biotite - phyric monzodiorite, which occurs in the basal portions of one of the deposits. Textural variants of intrusive phases at Goonumbla have been investigated to establish whether specific combinations of characteristics indicate mineralised intrusions, while others suggest barren ones. Some correlations between intrusion types and Cu and Au grade have been recognised. With the theme of û æUnderground Ore Handling SystemÆ, Kopanang Mine completed an extensive project on a specific system with technologies for the handling of ore from a dedicated drawpoint to the shaft system. The intended rail haulage tramming system had to be capable of handling the shaft design and Life of Mine (LOM) requirements. Kopanang is an AngloGold Ashanti gold mine situated in the province of the Free State in South Africa. In the Sotho language the name æKopanangÆ means to come together as a team. ItÆs an appropriate name given that 25 companies worked on this project. The future focus at Kopanang is to establish four mining levels between 3 to 4 km south-west of the shaft and two mining levels to the west. The mine has an expected life of almost 20 years and capital was approved in order to access this reserve to establish the infrastructure to handle the ore, hence this exclusive rail haulage tramming system of close to R40 million (SA rands), which took three years to construct. Apart from the fact that this system had to be capable of handling 6500 t per shift at a depth of over 2 km over a length of 3.2 km, some of the major considering factors were: safety, economic factors with improved labour productivity, efficiency and reliability, risk termination, and ergonomics. The system comprises two 20 t locomotives operating in a double header configuration from a dedicated draw point to a dedicated tip area for the reef and waste ore. With the objective of handling high speed and high capacity, this 200 t payload train is capable of running at 35 km/h powered from a 500 volt ac overhead line. Each loco consists of two 90 kW dc motors with ac/dc power conversion on the locomotive. For the system to operate at this speed, the rail system is constructed with Class 1 rails over the entire hauling distance. The tipping mechanism is unique and the span of 11 hoppers each with a load of close to 20 t is capable of tipping the pay load of 200 t in about 20 seconds hands free.

The mining industry has always been cost-focussed but in recent times mining companies have moved towards obtaining a competitive advantage through the implementation and sustainability of best practice in the areas of improved safety, operating costs, quality and productivity. This is the concept of Value In Use û that mining companies see value generated all the way to the bottom line through improved change, and those changes become an established mine practice. Many mining companies do not have the resources or the knowledge to sustainably achieve such an outcome. This has led to companies looking to their suppliers to deliver measured value to their business through partnership arrangements. Suppliers have been able to leverage their knowledge of products, product applications and services to offer alternative supply agreements that bring greater returns to their businesses while improving supplier/client relationships. Orica has developed such a partnership with Coal & Allied in the form of a Continuous Improvement Program. Coal & Allied is based in the Hunter Valley region of NSW and is the largest coal producer in that region. Both parties are contractually bound to jointly deliver Value In Use projects to Coal & AlliedÆs Hunter Valley Operations and Bengalla mine sites. It is the request of the Orica and Coal & Allied Steering Committees that this paper does not include the details of actual projects or the costs or key performance indicators associated with the program. This is to maintain the competitive advantage to both Orica and Coal & Allied through the implementation of such a program. It is in the writersÆ opinion that this paper does not lose any significance through this restriction as the most important component of the Continuous Improvement Program is not the projects themselves but the methodology behind them. With this in mind the paper will discuss the development of Value In Use offerings, the key aspects of the Coal & Allied and Orica joint program, what is a Value In Use project, how to measure its value, finally why and even more importantly what makes this program is a success.

This paper proposes a new multiresource multistage scheduling problem for optimising the open pit drilling, blasting and excavating operations under equipment capacity constraints. The flow process is analysed based on the real-life data from an Australian iron ore mine site. The objective of the model is to maximise the throughput and minimise the total idle times of equipment at each stage. The following comprehensive mining attributes and constraints have been considered: types of equipment; operating capacities of equipment; ready times of equipment; speeds of equipment; block-sequence-dependent movement times of equipment; equipment-assignment-dependent operation times of blocks; distances between each pair of blocks; due windows of blocks; material properties of blocks; swell factors of blocks; and slope requirements of blocks. It is formulated by mixed integer programming and solved by ILOG-CPLEX optimiser. The proposed model is validated with extensive computational experiments to improve mine production efficiency at the operational level. The model also provides an intelligent decision support tool to account for the availability and usage of equipment units for drilling, blasting and excavating stages.CITATION:Kozan, E and Liu, S Q, 2014. World urban expansion puts constraints on the available land surface area of our major cities both for accommodating people as well as providing infrastructure and services whilst at the same time attempting to preserve the remaining natural environment. Whilst consideration is often given to underground planning for private and public transport infrastructure, the author is of the opinion that the current lack of underground planning of our cities that are suitable for underground development will have major long implications when finally the need for underground space planning is critical and ultimately recognised. This paper identifies the need for our city planners to integrate surface planning and underground planning as a ‘total planning solution’ where the city plan incorporates the elements of underground space planning as identified in this paper. Investigations by the author reveal that there are very few cities in the world that actually incorporate underground space planning in their city plans. The author uses the City of Brisbane as a case study for the potential introduction of underground space planning as part of the city plan. Despite efforts by the author to include the planning concept of underground commercial development in the latest Brisbane City Plan 2014 as well as four underground space workshops in Brisbane over the past 20 year through the Australasian Tunnelling Society (ATS), underground space planning for the City of Brisbane, apart from infrastructure projects, is not considered of significance to the City of Brisbane.CITATION:Robertson, A C, 2014. Previous studies on the blast furnace raceway zone have been undertaken at three levels of scale, namely: laboratory models at low temperature, hot models which simulate coke combustion in the zone, and tests performed on operating and dismantled blast furnaces. This paper reviews the results of this published work on raceways in order to illustrate the factors which affect the raceway shape, size and combustion characteristics. Machine learning is creating value in all facets of the mining industry, from exploration to production. The authors provide an accessible, high-level introduction to artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL); the latter being widely recognised as one of the most powerful forms of ML. In particular, the authors will introduce deep learning models known as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), how they are applied, and the economic considerations necessary for determining when DL may be the right solution to de-risking complex block modelling problems. The authors present preliminary results from the mineral resource modelling study of the Jundee orogenic gold deposit, Yandal belt/gold province, Western Australia. The primary goal was to identify the direction and location of the narrow gold veins more accurately and demonstrate how non-linearly correlated elements are used as direct inputs to the resource model to assist with the target element’s grade prediction. This demonstrates that: (1) existing techniques for finding correlations between assayed elements do not adequately reflect the complex geology of the asset, (2) nonlinear correlations that are difficult to model as simple mathematical functions are representative of geological patterns in a deposit, and (3) non-linearly correlated assayed data, fed as inputs, increase the performance of the resource model as reconciled through blind tests. To conclude, the authors hypothesise that the patterns represented by the DL block models may be revealing the results of overprinting geological processes that generated mineral deposits. For example, the primary hydrothermal processes that deposited metals created depositional patterns that become particularly complex as a result of being overprinted, in part or in whole, by secondary physicochemical processes. This may explain why non-linear geochemical relationships have the capacity to generate more accurate block models of mineral deposits.
