The production of all Russian fields incressed from approsimatctly 74,000,000 bbl. during 1926-27, to approximately 83,000,000 bbl. during 1927-28. Of this amount Baku was responsible for 54,.500,000 bbl., Grozny for 25,800,000 bbl., and Emba for 1,200,000 bbl. Accordingly, the proportional importance of the Grozny oil field has been considerably increased, the present production being twice that of 1913. The most notable factor of production during 1927-28 was the importance of gushers; 40.8 per cent. of the total was thus obtained. In the Baku fields 26 per cent. of the total, and in Grozny 74.2 percent'. of the total were produced by naturally flowing wells. This may be explained by the reduction in authorizations for drilling by the central authorities, and, accordingly, the local trusts increased the production to the planned figures at the expense of the proved prolific reserves. In Baku region, the Surnkany oil field produced 36.1 per cent. of the total Baku production, or an equivalent of 53,800 bbl. per clay, the largest percentage coining from the fifth horizon. Nest year's plans call for continual development of that horizon as well as of the sixteenth horizon in the Bibi-Eibat field, which was opened lately. In the Grozny fields the New Area (Bellik) WAS responsible for 79.4 per cent. of the total production. The authorized plan for 1928-29 production calls for 92,200,000 bid., and a reasonably accurate estimate for 1932--33 production is placed at. 156,000,000 bbl., with Baku contributing 101,800,000 bbl., Grozny 44,100,000 bbl., Emba 6,200,000 bbl., Kuban 2,100,000 bbl., Saghalien Island 1,400,000 bbl., and Russian Turkestan 400,000 bbl. In connection with recent discoverices in the Baku area these figures art. quite conservative. The average production per well per day in the Baku oil fields was 49.2 bbl., in Grozny 175 bbl.; in detail, Surakany oil field averaged 250 bbl., and the New Area in Grozny 514 bbl. per day. New completions in all Baku fields averaged 264 bbl. per day, and in Grozny 970 bbl. pel. day. These figures show a considerable progress in the technical developnlent of all fields, compared even with the prerevolution figures, since all the mprovements are noted in the fields that arc over 30 years old.

The present paper describes a number of experiments with fine silver, coin silver, silver-cadmium oxide and silver-nickei-copper compacts, prepared by powder metallurgical methods. The test data are of a preliminary nature, since most of the work was exploratory. Fine Silver Eject of Compacting Pressure on Hardness and Density during Cold and Hot Pressing The cold-welding properties of silver have received considerable attention and the welding characteristics are functions of such variables as: cleanliness of metal particles (impurities and adsorbed gases), chemical nobility of particles, plasticity and hardness, particle assortment, particle shape, particle porosity, apparent density, temperature, pressure, time, recrystalliza-tion characteristics. Chemical nobility, plasticity and low temperature of recrystallization after work-hardening are responsible for the excellent low-temperature bonding properties of silver. Several series of compacts were pressed at pressures of 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 70 and 80 tons per square inch, at temperatures of 32°C. (room temperature), l00°, 2000, 300°, 400°, and 450°C. Silver powder of minus 325-mesh, produced by displacing silver from a nitrate solution by means of copper, was used. The density was calcuiated from accurately measured and weighed compacts. The hardness was measured on the Rockwell F scale. The investigation shows that an increase in pressure promotes a higher density and hardness regardless of pressing temperature, up to a temperature of 400° C. The pressure-density curves at various pressing temperatures are shown in Fig. I, the pressure-hardness curves at various pressing temperatures, in Fig. z. The greatest increase in both hardness and density was obtained in the pressure range of 5 to 20 tons per square inch. A compact from each series was annealed at 300°C. in air, for various lengths of time. The hardness values after annealing are shown in Table I. A minimum hardness was obtained after one hour of annealing. No change in density occurred during annealing. The maximum density was obtained at 80 tons per sq. in., and at this pressure the hardness is equal to that of hard-drawn wrought

The first indication of tungsten in the Bishop area was the discovery of scheelite concentrations in a gold placer operation in the ( since named) Tungsten Hills in 1913. After early intermittent production, the deposits of the district were slowly discovered and developed. The Pine Creek mine, located in 1916 and under the direction of Union Carbide Corporation since 1935, became the principal producer in the district. By the end of 1965, the total production of the district had reached 3,450,932 units of WO3, 17,071,242 pounds of molybdenum, and 19,599,110 pounds of copper. The topography of the district is characterized by its extreme relief, ranging in elevation from 13,986 feet to about 4400 feet in the Mount Tom quadrangle. The present topography is the result of the uplift and erosion of the Sierra Nevada and the great subsidence of the Owens Valley with its related deposition and volcanism. The general structure of the pre-Tertiary rocks consists of a series of tightly-folded metasedimentary and metavolcanic rock remnants surrounded by exposed plutons ranging in composition from hornblende gabbro to alaskite. The metasedimentary rocks consist of low- to intermediate-grade metamorphic equivalents of fine-grained sediments deposited during the Paleozoic era in a miogeosynclinal environment. Later volcanics were deposited in a eugeosyncline. The ore bodies in the Bishop district consist of scheelite-bearing tactite formed by the pyrometasomatic replacement* of calcareous sediments along the contact with an acidic granitic intrusive. A number of the metasedimentary remnants have had tungsten deposited along their edges.

THIS paper gives a brief summary of the process of manufacture of sterling silver, and some of its more important physical properties, as observed in commercial production of rolled sheet and wire. Although papers have been published by Turner and Smith,1 Rose,2 Sperry3 and Jordan,4 there are few technical data available, and unfortunately the time allowed for the preparation of this paper has not been sufficient to make it as comprehensive as the title might indicate. ANALYSIS OF STERLING SILVER Fine or pure silver is too soft for coinage and the manufacture of articles in which strength and resistance to wear are desired. From the earliest times of which we have record, copper has been the metal generally used to harden silver. Analyses of coins and silver articles from ancient tombs show varying amounts of copper, and old Roman silver objects in the British Museum have approximately the same analysis as our sterling. The first authentic record of the establishment of a standard alloy is during the reign of Henry II in England. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the people in the Eastern Provinces of Germany had a reputation for the standard and purity of their silver coinage, and it is said that Henry II employed some of these Easterlings, as they were called, to improve and standardize the English coinage, which had become debased. SINCE the Sixth Book has described the iron tools, the vessels and the machines used in mink, this Book will describe the methods of assaying1 ores; because it is desirable to first test them in order that the material mined may be advantageously smelted, or that the dross may be purged away and the metal made pure. Although writers have mentioned such tests, yet none of them have set down the directions for performing them, wherefore it is no wonder that those who come later have written nothing on the subject. By tests of this kind miners can determine with certainty whether ores contain any metal in them or not ; or if it has already been indicated that the ore contains one or more metals, the tests show whether it is much or little ; the miners also ascertain by such tests the method by which the metal can be separated from that part of the ore devoid of it ; and further, by these tests, they determine that part in which there is much metal from that part in which there is little. Unless these tests have been carefully applied before the metals are melted out, the ore cannot be smelted without great loss to the owners, for the parts which do not easily melt in the fire carry the metals off with them or consume them. In the last case, they pass off with the fumes ; in the other case they are mixed with the slag and furnace accretions, and in such event the owners lose the labour which they have spent in preparing the furnaces and the crucibles, and further, it is necessary for them to incur fresh expenditure for fluxes and other things. Metals, when they have been melted out, are usually assayed in order that we may ascertain what pro- portion of silver is in a centumpondium of copper or lead, or what quantity of gold is in one libra of silver ; and, on the other hand, what proportion of copper or lead is contained in a centumpondium of silver, or what quantity of silver is contained in one libra of gold. And from this we can calculate whether it will be worth while to separate the precious metals from the base metals, or not. Further, a test of this kind shows whether coins are good or are debased ; and readily detects silver, if the coiners have mixed more than is lawful with the gold ; or copper, if the coiners have alloyed with the gold or silver more of it than is allowable. I will explain all these methods with the utmost care that I can.

I. R. Kramer (Martin Co.)—In a recent paper Nakada and Chalmers24 reported some observations of effects of surface conditions on the stress-strain curves of aluminum and gold single crystals. It is of interest to compare these observations with the results published previously in this journal and to comment on their general conclusions. In brief, Nakada and Chalmers concluded that the removal of the surface layer of a prestrained specimen lowered the stress-strain curve for aluminum but not that for gold. Further, they concluded that the surface work hardening of aluminum is confined to a depth not more than l0-3 cm. In our results25 published previously, it was pointed out that when prestrained specimens of aluminum and gold were polished to reduce the thickness upon reloading the initial flow stress decreased markedly. Further if a sufficient amount of metal was removed, the yield point failed to appear. With continued application of the load the stress-strain curve became coincident with that of the virgin crystal. We have found this behavior in some 100 determinations to hold consistently for gold, aluminum, and copper in both single and poly-crystalline specimens. The amount of strain required before the curves coincided depends upon the amount of metal removed but it is usually less than 0.01. This type of behavior is the same as that reported for metarecovery by other investigators.29 For aluminum specimens which have been prestrained and then heated to temperatures above 50°C we have consistently found that the stress-strain curve was typical of the orthorecovery28 type. In this case the stress-strain curve always lies below that of the virgin specimen. With respect to Ref. 24 the curves for aluminum are always below that of the virgin curves, while those for gold become coincident. This observation indicates at least for aluminum that the specimens must have been heated to a temperature high enough to cause recovery by an alteration of the internal dislocations. In addition, a recovery would be expected because of the removal of the surface work-hardened layer. Nakada27 had reported that, with his particular apparatus in which a perchloric acid polishing solution was used, the temperature of the specimen increased 65°C. The curves presented in Ref. 24 for gold do not permit one to detect the initial flow stress upon reloading after the surface-removal treatment. In fact, contrary to the method used by Nakada and Chalmers, the change in the stress-strain curve produced by a surface-removal treatment cannot be described in terms of a decrease in stress at strains much higher than that at the initial flow stress because of the coincidence of the curves at the higher strain values. With regard to the depth of the work-hardened surface layer, our data show for aluminum single crystals (7.5 by 0.3 by 0.3 cm) that the initial flow stress remained constant after 12 x 10-3 cm had been removed from the thickness. This depth was independent of the prior strain. For gold crystals this depth is somewhere between 10 x 10-3 and 20 x 10-3 cm. Y. Nakada (author's reply)— Kramer states,28 "for aluminum specimens which have been prestrained and then heated to temperatures above 50°C, we have consistently found that the stress-strain curve was typical of the orthorecovery28 type. In this case the stress-strain curve always lies below that of the virgin specimen." However, Cherian et a1.26 discovered that aluminum polycrystals annealed at 32" and 100°C showed the metarecovery behavior. They showed that the orthorecovery behavior did not appear until the crystals were annealed at 150°C. Kramer suggests28 that the drop in the flow stress of aluminum crystals after the surface removal by electropolishing24 may be due to the recovery caused by the temperature rise which may occur during the electropolishing.27 However, as indirectly stated in Ref. 24, the current density used in these electro -polishing experiments was 0.15 amp per sq cm. According to ref. 27, this current density should cause a temperature rise of only 40°C. This may cause the metarecovery but not the orthorecovery. Furthermore, as stated explicitly in Ref. 24, the surface removal was accomplished by chemical etching as well as by electropolishing. The results were the same for both electropolishing and etching. During the etching, the specimen temperature did not rise above 35°C. Some aluminum crystals were placed in water at 35° C for 30 min. These crystals did not show the decrease in flow stress. Therefore, it is quite clear that the flow-stress drop after the surface removal is not caused by a high-temperature recovery. However, as Kramer points out,28 it is quite possible that the internal dislocation structure may have been altered because of the removal of the highly work-hardened surface layer. However, how much this rearrangement contributes toward the flow-stress decrease is not known at present.

The International Salt Company has long been interested in finding an efficient process for the removal of impurities from rock salt, and particularly from the rock salt produced at the Detroit mine. Methods which have been used previously at the Detroit mine included both hand sorting and differential crushing in a Bradford breaker with rejection of the oversize. Neither of these methods was adequately effective. The development of a new process for removal of impurities from rock salt has been described in the preceding article." Basically, the process consists of exposure of crude rock salt to radiant heating which selectively heats the impure particles. Subsequently the heated particles are removed by adhesion to a heat sensitive-coating on a conveyor belt. This method was found to be effective in improving both the quality and appearance of rock salt by the rejection of the dark, impure particles. The first commercial unit employing the new thermoadhesive method of dry separation of minerals was installed at the Detroit mine of International Salt Company in Detroit, Mich. (Fig. l). This unit was first put into operation in March 1957. The purpose of the Detroit installation was 1) to serve as a pilot plant for evaluating the process on a commercial scale and 2) to produce marketable quantities of rock salt of improved quality and ap- pearance. The design of this plant was based on the results and information obtained from a 1-tph pilot plant at Battelle Memorial Institute. DESCRIPTION OF PLANT Location: The separation plant was installed underground near the crushing and screening plant, for this was the most suitable location from the standpoint of material handling. Furthermore, ample space was availabe at this location. Because the process requires a relatively constant temperature, the uniform year-around temperature of the mine (57°F) gave an added advantage to an underground operation. Feeding: The rock salt is conveyed to a surge bin, from which it is fed to the heating unit by a conveyor. The feed-rate control consists simply of an adjustable gate at the bottom of the surge bin. The plant may be fed either No. 1 grade of rock salt (0.279 to 0.375 in.) or No. 2 grade (0.375 to 0.500 in.) with a maximum input capacity of 500 tons per 15-hour day. Heating Unit: The heating unit (Fig. 2) consists of a panel of infrared lamps suspended inside a low-speed revolving screen. The radiant-heat panel, which is curved for most effective utilization of the heat, holds 240 infrared lamps of standard industrial type, each rated at 500 watts. The position of the panel is adjustable so that it can be placed centrally over and to within 6 in. of the salt bed on the screen. The entire heat panel is suspended by rollers in ¦ R. J. IT is the purpose of the present paper, while not excluding chemical considerations, to deal more extensively with some of the physical and mechanical aspects of the blast-furnace process, and to point out its dependence in these respects on well-known laws. The quantity and cost of ore and flux required to make a ton of iron being determined by circumstances over which the furnace-man, under given conditions as to quality and quantity of product, has commonly little control; the principal item of cost, apart from the saving of labor, which he can aspire to reduce, is that of fuel. To determine the limits of possibility in this direction is clearly the first step in d practical inquiry; and this step is represented herewith in Fig. 1, a diagram showing the total useful effect obtained from a pound of fuel under various conditions, and thus permitting direct comparison, under any given conditions, between actual results and the maximum possible results. The following statements will explain the basis upon which this diagram has been constructed. One pound of fuel, containing 90 per cent. of fixed carbon (which represents average conditions), is taken as the unit. The degree of oxidation of the carbon is measured by the ratio of the two oxides of carbon contained in the top-gases. It is necessary to remember that a considerable quantity of carbon is brought in as carbon dioxide by the flux, and to take account of it and of its condition. It is here considered that the carbon dioxide liberated by the limestone does not affect the analysis of the toll-gases, and that the ratio of CO to CO., will remain unchanged by the addition of limestone; enough CO, being reduced by the solution

DURING the last six years, there have been many extensive investigations of the fatigue of metals. The major work of 'these investigations has been the determination of constants for fatigue strength of wrought ferrous metals; but during the past year or two there have become available considerable test data on the fatigue strength of certain nonrferrous metals, including copper, brass, bronze, nickel, copper-nickel alloys, aluminum and aluminum alloys, magnesium and magnesium alloys. It is not proposed to give here extensive quantitative tables of test results; for such tables, reference is made to the published data of various laboratories. The following general conclusions, however, seem to be fairly well established: 1. The phenomenon known as "fatigue" of metal really a progressive fracture of metals. A minute (probably submicroscopic) crack is formed in the metal, the internat stress, is intensified at the ends' of the crack, and under successive applications of load the crack spreads like a minute hacksaw cut until there is not enough sound metal left in the cross-section of the piece to stand the load. applied, and then failure occurs suddenly. 2. For wrought ferrous metals, there is .a limiting intensity of stress (as computed by the ordinary formulas of mechanics of materials) below which, a metal is able to withstand an indefinitely large number of repetitions of stress without failure. This limiting stress is known as the "endurance limit or the fatigue limit.? For reversed flexure, the endurance limit for. wrought ferrous metals is usually not far from 50 per cent. of the ultimate tensile strength.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) NICKEL has always been a fruitful mother of problems. Previous to the year 1906 nickel was regarded as an element replacing iron in copper-mattes, and it was believed that the same laws which governed the elimination of iron could be applied-to nickel. This conception has lately undergone a complete change, and nickel in all its stages is now regarded as an element replacing copper; in other words, copper-nickel is considered now as two elements, but as one metal. When we commenced our investigations on Monel metal we made a great many experiments on the conversion of mattes, both high copper and high nickel. We studied closely the composition of the mattes and the changes produced by the blow. We found in all cases certain agreements which we believe are due to some law. Briefly stated, our conclusions are as follows 1. Nickel is not an element replacing iron in matte. 2. Nickel-copper alloys act in the matte-blow like one metal. 3. Nickel-copper alloys follow, during the matte-blow, exactly the same laws as govern. the behavior of copper alone. This brings up the question : What are the laws governing the production of metallic copper, and what are the relations copper to sulphur and iron during the Bessemer blow ?

Discussion of the paper of R. J. COLONY, presented at the New York Meeting, February, 1921, and issued With MINING AND METALLURGY No. 169, January, 1921. R. J. COLONY (author's reply to discussion).-The work of Sosman and Merwin on the system lime-ferric oxide, mentioned by Mr. Rankin, was not overlooked. When studying portland cements and portland-cement clinkers petrographically, however, the lime-iron compound was difficult to correlate with the very definite dicalcium ferrite described by those investigators, which possesses such well-defined optical properties. In portland cements, the calcium ferrite (or ferrate?) is an indefinite, fuzzy, and generally amorphous, or apparently amorphous substance that is distributed interstitially with respect to the other grains, from which it was very difficult to derive any satisfactory results. For this reason, the writer, tentatively, chose to regard it as related to the aluminate, and assigned to it the composition 3CaO.Fe203, which may be incorrect, however, as Mr. Rankin suggests.

DURING the happy and peaceful years between the Treaty of Versailles and the third New Deal, metallurgy became one of the most cosmopolitan of the sciences. Any metallurgist can name some twenty or thirty scientists whose work, in this country, in England, in Germany, or in France, Sweden, Italy, or Japan was as well known in other parts of the metal-producing and metal using world as it was locally, despite the fact that many of these men never left their native land. One of these metallurgical cosmopolites is Augustus Braun Kinzel, former Chairman of the Iron and Steel Division, A.I.M.E., and now a Director of the Institute. Gus Kinzel, however, is not only a cosmopolite by reputation; he is also a cosmopolite in fact. For many years he commuted at least twice a year between New York and the rest of the world; he is, therefore, not only an expert on the art and science of metallurgy but is equally expert in world travel and can expound with authority on the comparative quality and especially on the cuisine of the great prewar steamship lines; and being a true cosmopolite, he knows, as well as he knows the iron-chromium diagram, the best vintage years in the Gironde, Cote d'Or, and Saone-et-Loire departments in France and along the banks of the Moselle and Rhine in Germany.

The role of the precious metals is changing rapidly. They are becoming primarily materials of modern industry, and their decorative and monetary functions are diminishing in relative importance. Certainly gold is still the premier metal for jewelry, as silver is for silverware. But these uses are not growing nearly so fast as are the uses of these metals in a variety of industries. This is even more true of the platinum metals. Moreover, this is true despite the fact that the precious metals are highly expensive and liable to substitution by the base metals in cases where this is feasible. For the fact is that the physical and chemical properties of the precious metals make them relatively invulnerable to substitution; where they can be replaced by the base metals, they have been, and the opportunity for further substitution is, therefore, limited. SILVER In November 1969 the United States Treasury stopped minting the only remaining coin with any silver content. That was the silver-clad Kennedy half dollar, which had a silver content of approximately 40%. The step was taken out of necessity, because of the rising shortfall between world mine production and consumption. It was important to divert the 35 to 40 million oz of silver per year used for the minting of this coin into the open market, where it would be available for industrial consumption. This decision was important, not only for its practical effect but also for what it symbolized. Only four years earlier, in 1965, the Treasury had used 320 million oz of silver" for the full range of coinage. Now not an ounce of silver goes into the United States coinage. The reason is simple and yet complicated. For many years the U.S. Treasury had purchased silver at prices which provided a subsidy to domestic producers. As a result, silver producers were eager to sell to the Treasury, and that agency built up a huge supply of the metal -almost 2 billion oz by- 1961. But, as the free-market price neared $1.29, the basic melt value of the coinage, the Treasury became a seller of silver, not a buyer, and its stock was depleted rapidly. The Treasury lost more :than a billion ounces of silver in the years 1962 through 1965, and it continued to lose silver, both through coinage and through sales to consumers, through 1969. The Government continued to sell silver to consumers at the rate of 1.5 million oz a week, even after terminating the 40% silver Kennedy half dollar. As fractures are propagated through rocks, energy is absorbed near the extending crack tip. Apparent surface energies for several rocks have been measured by cleavage under dynamic con-ditions. At nominal crack velocities from 0.5 to 500 in (min, measurements showed that fractures propagated in discrete jumps. Calculated surface energies and moduli were relatively insensitive to nominal rate of cleavage. in another set of experiments, rocks were cleaved under high confining stresses. The rocks were submerged in low leak-off fluids which formed a filter cake on the freshly cleaved surfaces (similar to the hydraulic lracturing process). Apparent surface energies were increased substantially as the surrounding fluid pressure was increased. Moduli in bending increased significantly upon application of the first 1,000 psi but were insensitive to stress level at greater pressures. INTRODUCTION For almost 20 years, hydraulic fracturing processes have been utilized effectively to stimulate oil and gas wells. During this period, some process improvements have resulted from studies of fracture orientation, mechanics of fracturing, areas generated, conductivities of cracks, etc. Yet many questions remain concerning the conditions and pressures needed during fracture propagation. In this paper we will report additional studies of the mechanics of fracture extension. It was shown previously3 that large rock samples could be cleaved under controlled conditions so as to measure the apparent surface energy (that amount of energy absorbed per unit area of new surface created). In this paper we consider the effects of two additional factors on surface energies, viz.: (1) effect of cleavage rate and (2) effect of confining stress level. THEORY Cleavage experiments were conducted on rock samples similar to that illustrated in Fig. 1. Blocks of rock several inches wide, 2- to 3-in. thick, and up to 3 ft in length were grooved longitudinally with shallow guide slots. A crack was initiated and allowed to extend along the web as the top of the rock specimen was pulled (or pushed) apart. Auxiliary equipment permits the measurement of (1) force applied at the top, (2) separation at the top and (3) crack length. (Further experimental details will be given in the next section.) The rock beams created by the crack are considered ton be cantilever beams. The deflection (or separation of the rock beams) at any point is calculated 4,5 by the beam Eq. 1.

Having had occasion while in Europe during the past summer to visit some of the foreign mints and assay offices connected with the same, I thought a brief description of the general process of coining employed, and such items connected with assaying as were new, might prove interesting to the Institute. The principal foreign mints are: the Royal Mint, London; and the mints in Paris, Brussels, Utrecht, Berlin, Vienna, Copenhagen, St. Petersburg, Stockholm, Madrid, Milan, Rome, and Constantinople. HAVING had occasion while in Europe during the past summer to visit some of the foreign mints and assay offices connected with the same, I thought a brief description of the general process of coining employed, and such items connected with assaying as were new, might prove interesting to the Institute. The principal foreign mints are: the Royal Mint, London; and the mints in Paris, Brussels, Utrecht, Berlin, Vienna, Copenhagen, St. Petersburg, Stockholm, Madrid, Milan, Rome, and Constantinople. The Upper Freeport coal in the Freeport and New Kensington quadrangles, Pennsylvania, varies from a bony streak to a thick coal deposit often exceeding ninety inches, the "Double" or "Thick Freeport". Distinctive basal partings, a central bone layer, and a canneloid top bench may be present. The appearance of a sandstone roof, sandstone rolls, and bony coal at the top of the main coal bench can be anticipated in thin Freeport areas when basal partings are absent. When the two basal partings are present, a shale roof is normal. These effects are correlated with the original topography upon which the coal was deposited. The original depositional high areas tend to coincide with present structural highs. Preliminary data indicate that coal quality, in part, is affected by the deposi-tional setting. In "high" areas, a tendency exists for the main coal bench to contain higher percentages of fusain and mineral matter. Within limits, some-what higher ash fusion temperatures appear to correlate with paleotopographic highs. As a result of these findings, critical examination of the paleotopography and related sediments is indicated in other areas and other coals. The Upper Freeport coal is quite variable both in thickness and composition in the Freeport and New Kensington quadrangles of Pennsylvania (Figure 1). The coal horizon in these quadrangles is marked either by a thin carbonaceous shale bed or by a single bed containing a variable number of partings (binders). The complex coal zone known locally as the "Double" or "Thick Freeport" contains the Upper Freeport Coal Bed at the base; but in addition, it has an overlying bone layer and an upper coal bed occasionally capped with a canneloid layer. The "Thick Freeport" often exceeds 90 inches in thickness, whereas the normal Upper Freeport coal usually varies between 34 and 50 inches.

THE investigation described in this paper deals with the development of high-temperature alloys of the Konel series over a considerable period of time at the Research Laboratories of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co. The word "Konel" has been coined to designate a class of alloys which are essentially nickel-cobalt-iron with other elements added, usually in small quantities. Most of these alloys contain titanium, usually about 2.5 percent. The main consideration related to strength at high temperatures but the thermionic characteristics of the alloys was also of considerable importance. It is, however, with the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures that we are herein concerned. Much attention has also been devoted to their age-hardening characteristics. There is little need to stress the utilitarian aspect of this subject, as it has been discussed frequently. Alloys exhibiting superior properties at normal or elevated temperatures rapidly find many suitable applications. There may be some question, however, as to what constitutes a "superior alloy, " or an alloy that may have good service possibilities at high temperatures. The problem is complex and various means have been employed to predict the useful life that may be expected of a material. In recent years the "creep limit" has been used as the best means of evaluation. Such tests necessarily are prolonged and hence collection of data is very slow. In a general survey of many alloys therefore the creep test is not desirable and recourse must be had to much shorter time tests in order more rapidly to select alloys which appear to show promise. For this reason the present survey has been made using the high-temperature tensile test and a bend' test developed by Howard Scott.1 In the tensile test the conditions have been standardized for all tests, so that values obtained are at least comparable, one alloy with another, although the absolute values recorded merely indicate the mechanical properties at the given temperature under a definite rate of loading.

(communication to the Secretary?). -Fig. 1 plainly shows that the comparison of the steam-turbine and Diesel-engine plants was made on a basis of 6,000 kw. continuous operating load. The tabulation of costs for an 8,000-kw. load is merely done to show the relation of increased output on' the unit power costs. Both plants would sacrifice their reserve capacity, which is to insure continuous operation, if operated to generate 8,000 kw. continuously; unless Mr. Hawkins advocates the operation of one of the turbines at 33.33 per cent. overload, retaining the other as a standby, which, besides overtaxing the turbine, results in a great loss of efficiency. It would he well for Mr. Hawkins to qualify certain of his statements. Thus, under the caption "Diesel Engines, Selection of Units," he says that "two of the largest Diesel-engine builders take the position that, in the present state of the art, they would not attempt to put out units over 1,000 kw.;" he should qualify it by saving that "two of the largest American Diesel-engine builders take the position that, in the present state of the art in the United States, they would not attempt to put out units over 1,000 kw." The reason that American manufacturers restrict themselves at present to units of that size is to be found not so much in a lack of experience in building large units as in a lack of a sufficient, demand for them in the United States to justify the heavy capital outlay connected with the development of such engines. There are relatively few localities in the United States where fuel prices are as high as they are in the Southwest, and regions of high fuel prices are sparsely settled and have a very limited demand for power. Where low fuel prices obtain, steam turbines are active competitors of Diesel engines for large power plants, particularly when the station load factor is low. As most of the American manufacturers of Diesel engines work under license agreements with European manufacturers, which limit their market to the United States and its possessions and Canada, a further limitation is imposed upon them, leaving to European firms practically the entire world as a market.
