Although no complete mineralogical balances have been published, the background knowledge and proven, highly sensitive analytical techniques to produce them already exist. For PGE-Cu-Ni sulphide ores a combination of ore microscopy, image analysis and electron microprobe analysis with proton microprobe analysis of sulphides for Pd, Rh and Ru and ion microprobe analysis for Pt, Ir and Rh (in some minerals) should provide the necessary data when combined with reliable assays. Other sulphide ores, such as the Cu-Ni-(PGE) ores of Sudbury, Ontario, require a similar approach except that the ion microprobe would be more suitable for the analysis of Pd, Pt and Rh because of its greater sensitivity. Oxide-silicate ores may be harder to deal with quantitatively, although the potential to confirm the presence of trace PGE within silicates and oxides may be greater than in PGE sulphide and Cu-Ni-(PGE) sulphide ores. However, solid solution of PGE in oxides and silicates still requires thorough documentation and evaluation in terms of their significance for the overall metallurgical balance

The following record of the important responsibilities already shouldered by Dr. Ricketts will give some indication of the trust and confidence reposed in him by his colleagues. The Institute is to be congratulated that a man who is already so much engaged should be willing to assume the further responsibility of guiding the Institute's Ship of state during the ensuing year. Louis Davidson Ricketts, who is brother of Professor Palmer or Chamberlaine Ricketts, President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, was born at Elkton, Md., Dec. 19. 1859, was graduated from Princeton University in 1881 with the degree, Bachelor of Science, chosen a Fellow in Chemistry and W. S. Ward Fellow in Economic Geology, and after two years' study given the degree Doctor of Science. Following the completion of Iris work at Princeton, Dr. Ricketts went to Colorado and started to work as a mine surveyor. For the 15 years following, his time was chiefly occupied in reconnaissance work, geological work and mine examination. From 1887 to 1890 Dr. Ricketts was Geologist for Wyoming, and at, the end of that period transferred his operations to the Southwest. where he has since been steadily engaged in large mining projects. He was identified with the acquisition of the property now owned by the Moctezuma Copper Co., a , subsidiary of Phelps, Dodge & Co., at Nacozari, Sonora, Mex. From 1899 to 1901 he was General Manager of the property and during his administration the concentrator and reduction works were completed and the mines put on a dividend-paying basis

The modulus of elasticity of rock material (Ei) is an important rock property that is used as an input parameter in the design stage of engineering projects such as dam and tunnel constructions, mining excavations, and so forth. However, determination of the modulus of elasticity is sometimes difficult to obtain by laboratory tests because high-quality cores are required. For this reason, empirical methods for predicting the modulus of elasticity of rock material have been popular research topics in recently published literature. In this study, the relationships between the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), unit weight (?) and modulus of elasticity for different types of rocks were analysed by using 177 data obtained from laboratory tests carried out on cores obtained from drill holes within the area of the Kadiköy-Kartal Metro line (Istanbul, Turkey). Pyrometallurgical furnaces, essential for metal extraction, operate at temperatures exceeding 1600°C and represent complex multiphase systems that challenge direct industrial research. Multiphysics models play a key role in shedding light on their intricate behaviours, supporting the refinement of design and operational strategies. Integral to the operation are the tap-holes, which facilitate the removal of molten products and are routinely opened by lancing, a process comparable to the use of a cutting torch, where high temperatures result from oxygen reacting with an iron lance. When the lance pierces the clay, oxygen gas enters the furnace, which could influence the behaviour of the molten material inside. In this work, a multiphase fluid flow model was used to investigate bulk flow dynamics, with a focus on the effects of the lancing process on the inside of the furnace, immediately behind the tap-hole. Incompressible and compressible multiphase fluid solvers were used and compared with respect their performance – the intention was to assess whether using a compressible solver would yield a different solution to the incompressible one. It was concluded that there are negligible disparities in bulk fluid flow behaviour between the solvers for the case studies examined, indicating that solver selection might be less consequential for certain aspects of oxygen lancing.

Open fire in coal mines is one of the most serious threats to miners, as well as to the mine. Open fire can often be effectively dealt with by prompt local action, otherwise it very quickly becomes uncontrollable. In one incident, none of the available open fire control technologies, viz., water deluge and sprinkler systems, high-expansion foam, high-pressure high-stability nitrogen foam, water misting, and ventilation and pressure control techniques, were effective for saving the mine without sealing from surface, since the fuel-rich environment prohibited underground access due to the methane explosion hazard. The authors have developed a methodology for dealing with advancedstage open fires underground by the application of a modified ventilation control technique. It is based primarily on a better understanding of the behaviour of open fires, proper diagnosis of the problem, application of judicious ventilation control techniques, and selection of suitable fire indices for assessing the status of an open fire. This methodology was used to successfully control an open fire in Surakachhar 3 and 4 incline mine Surakachhar, central India. The fire area was sealed underground and production subsequently resumed in record time. The paper discusses the behaviour of open fires, particulars of the mine, diagnosis of the problem, experimentation methods, and the results obtained.

On the Hauraki goldfields, within the limits of Cape Colville Peninsula, the Paheozoic rocks are confined to the district north of a line drawn from Mercury Bay on the east coast to Rocky Point on the shore of the Frith of Thames. South of Kennedy's Bay they are developed on the east coast only at Kuaotunu, at which place gold mining is carried on in sandstones and slates of this age. Between Tapu Creek and Coromandel there is, along and adjacent to the shore of the gulf, a very considerable development of PaJreozoic and in part of Trias rocks, and between the Tiki Stream and the northern end of Tokatea Hill, along the western slope of the main range, lies the special area of the Palreozoic or carboniferous rocks that have more particularly to be dealt with in this paper. The same formation has a large devolpment between Cabbage Bay and the northern slopes of Moehau, and appears to the water marge on both sides of this part of the peninsula.In this part they are of special interest as having, on the west spur of Moehau, a considerable variety of dyke rocks intruded into the sedimentaries, the interest in which is increased by the fact that these dykes theIllselves are of Palreozoic age and correspond to the dykes that are so' abundant in the Tokatea-Tiki area. The Grasberg block cave rail haulage system will be located in the Grasberg mining district on the island of Papua, Indonesia at an elevation of almost 3000 m above sea level. It will transport 160 000 t of ore per day from multiple chute galleries to the underground crushing systems. The design entails approximately 23 km of rail (ballasted and embedded track), over 120 ore chutes to deliver ore to the muck cars and three unloading stations to deliver ore to the crushers. The rail haulage system is a closed-loop system entirely within the underground mining complex.The GBC rail haulage project will be a substantial operation. Trains consist of 11–12 bottom-dump 20 m3 muck cars driven by a 40 t electric locomotive, about 400 t per trainload. Approximately 12 trains and one spare are required to maintain full production at 160 000 t/d. All rail installations will be 1435 mm (standard) gauge with AS60 steel.The rail system is designed to operate in full automated mode, including chute loading, hauling and dumping. The operation will be controlled from a surface control room.The rail haulage project has been divided into five stages, which will be brought online over the course of ten years. Current development and construction are focused on Stage 1 for initial production that will occur beginning in late 2017. This stage includes 24 chutes in three chute galleries, one unloading station, workshop areas and almost 7 km of track (3 km of embedded and 4 km of ballast).This paper describes the key components of the rail haulage system and reports on the current status of development and construction of the system. Designing coal pillars to provide resistance against overburden loads has long been an aim of rock mechanics engineers. The need for accurate pillar strength models has become more urgent as greater overburdens are encountered and pillar sizes grow larger. Current pillar design models differ widely in their predictions of the trend in pillar strength with increasing pillar width-to-height ratio. The goal of this paper is to evaluate current pillar strength theories, using a comprehensive data base of stress measurements from coal pillars. The stress measurements indicate that coal pillars maintain relatively high stresses near the ribline, and that the stress gradient within the yield zone can be approximated as a straight line. Several problems are identified for further research, including calibration procedures for different types of stress cells, strain softening behavior in the yield zone, and measurement of stresses in the cores of very wide pillars.

In October 2006, a 7m Double Shield TBM, boring through very poor volcanic formations, was pushed back by fluid mud, which presence had not been detected during previous field investigations, due to the high covers characterizing the majority of the tunnel axis. The present work describes the investigations made to gain better knowledge of the conditions in front and all around the TBM, the special measures implemented, the exploratory and bypass tunnels excavated, the extraordinary occurrences came true during the execution of these tunnels, the drainage campaigns, the design of the chamber excavated to free the TBM, the dismounting and restarting of the TBM.

INTRODUCTION This is the first in a series of papers addressing practical tunnel lining design. The format for this and future papers is to present a particular topic and support the presentation of the guidelines by the practical application of a case history. The primary intent is to provide guidelines for the geotechnical and structural design of tunnels where the tunnel size and/or ground conditions dictates that systematic support of the excavation is required following each increment of excavation. This method of tunneling is commonly referred to as Sequential Excavation and Support(SES) and is also commonly termed the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) The authors developed the design guidelines from experience gained over the past two decades during the design and construction of several major railway, highway and water-transfer tunnel projects in Africa and Asia. During this time it has been possible to compare the performance of the as-constructed structures to the predicted performance as given by the design process. Excavation was typically carried out in widely varying ground conditions (weak-bedded rock, jointed hard rock, and soil-like poorly cemented rock with groundwater). It is therefore intended that the design guidelines could be applied, in general terms at least, to any tunnel excavated in any ground mass condition with any ground material type (hard rock, soft rock, bedded rock, soft ground, and soil) with or without ground water. This first paper is an introductory paper that defines the scope and a brief outline of the design issues that may be presented in detail in later papers. What is design? It may be thought of as any rational/verifiable/justifiable process whereby a concept is transformed into information that can be used to bring the concept to reality. In the case of a civil structure, design may be defined as that process, which is documented and can be audited, that determines information such as the shape (form) of the structure, the dimensions (size) of the structure, the thickness and strength of structural members that comprise the structure, etc. This information can be used to compute the time, money and resources required for

At present, there is little knowledge concerning the shear strength of clays containing floating rock particles with concentrations from 0 to 30%. In practice, the effect of rock particles is typically disregarded in shear strength analysis The two primary reasons for this are: 1) a lack of agreement concerning the influence of rock particles on material strength, and 2) the expense and difficulty of testing day-rack mixtures with existing laboratory procedures. These factors have impeded the development of successful slope remediation design techniques far colluviums derived from resistant sedimentary rocks or spoil produced from surface mining. This study reviewed 3 1 technical papers which contain analysis of shear strengths for clay and sands with varying mixtures of rock particles. These technical papers, published over the last 40 years, are comprised of field case studies, laboratory evaluations, and theoretical analysis. Evaluation of this body of knowledge ha shown that the shear strength gradually increases with increasing percentages of floating particles in unsaturated clays.

This report documents, from concept through field testing, the pan scraper Wheel Slip Monitor. The function of this device is to instantly warn the scraper operator of wheel slip and thus enable him to take immediate corrective action. Knowledgeable pan scraper people recognize that the preponderance of scraper tire damage and wear occurs during useless wheel slip when the scraper operator attempts to increase machine draft beyond what traction will allow. The resultant shortened tire life has become very expensive. The Wheel Slip Monitor reported here provides the means for relieving the scraper operator of attempting to judge wheel slip on tires he cannot see. Direct and intuitively understandable audible and flashing light warnings tell the scraper operator which wheel is slipping and also indicate the relative magnitude of the slip. Beside the Wheel Slip Monitor's patent utility as a real time operator aid, it has unique potential for application to extended term wheel slip history acquisition under field conditions. This information has never been easily available and it promises practical value in pan scraper management.

Mining has long been an important activity for the people of Australia . The Aboriginals used rocks and minerals in their culture many thousand years before European settlement. It was not until 1840 that silver-lead ore was discovered in the Mount Lofty Ranges , and developed as Australia's first metalliferous mine. The mining industry contributes significantly to all aspects of the Australian economy, generating substantial employment opportunities, investment and income, export earnings and royalties for Governments. While the mining industry in South Australia is small by comparison with Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales, it is nevertheless a very important industry in the State.   With the discovery of the world's third largest Cu-Au-U-Ag resource at Olympic Dam in 1975, the State saw a period of intense exploration activity through the early to mid-1980s. However, failure to locate additional world class deposits saw a dramatic reduction in exploration activity during the late 1980s. A perceived lack of prospectivity was compounded by the recognition that exploration for such deposits was neither easy nor inexpensive in South Australia because more than 80% of the State is masked by surficial sand and silt.

Reduction of Groote Eylandt (Australia) and Wessels (South Africa) manganese ores using CH4-H2-Ar gas mixture was investigated in a fixed bed laboratory reactor in the temperature range 1000?1200oC. The extent and kinetics of manganese ore reduction as a function of gas composition and temperature were determined by on-line off-gas analysis using mass-spectrometer and dew point sensor. Morphology of ores and its change in the course of reduction was examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Phases of raw materials and reduced samples were analysed by XRD and EPMA. Manganese oxides were reduced to carbide Mn7C3. High extent and rate of reduction by methane-containing gas in comparison with carbothermal reduction were attributed to high carbon activity in the reducing gas, which was in the range 15 - 50 (relative to graphite). The reduction rate of Wessels manganese ore increased with increasing temperature. Reduction rate and extent of Groote Eylandt manganese ore achieved maximum at 1050oC. The decrease in rate and extent of reduction of Groote Eylandt ore at higher temperatures, particularly at 1150-1200oC, was due to sintering and formation of semi-liquid silicate slag. The optimum conditions for the reduction of manganese ores were established as follows: a) temperature: 1150-1200oC for Wessels and 1050-1100oC for Groote Eylandt ores, b) methane concentration: 10-15 vol%, c) hydrogen concentration: above 30 vol%, (d) size: 1-3 mm. An addition of lime (10-15 wt% CaO) to the Groote Eylandt manganese ore increased melting temperature of slag and significantly increased the rate and extent of reduction at elevated temperatures.

"Recently, Antamina has completed an expansion program of its operations which increased the thoughput in grinding from acapacity of 109 to 130 ktpd. After commissioning, throughput could be exceeded in grinding and downstream processes but primary crushing became a major bottleneck to the overall production process.With an objective to increase the processing capacity of the primary crusher system, a multidisciplinary team was formed with members of Mine, Concentrator and Maintenance departments, who analyzed the overall context of this process restriction. The main implementations developed were: automatic discharge systems of trucks, logic to count trucks and elaboration of a daily performance report. Following implementation of developed improvements, the numbers of discharged trucks to crusher were increased from 449 to 614 units per day. As a result, the expansion target of 130 ktpd was exceeded and processing capacity was increased from 109 ktpd to 145 ktpd. This improvement adds very significant economical value for Antamina.INTRODUCTIONAntamina is a copper-zinc mine located in the Peruvian Andes. Compañía Minera Antamina is owned by BHP Billiton (33.75%), Xstrata (33.75%), Teck Cominco (22.5%), and Mitsubishi (10%). The mine was commissioned in 2001 with a capital investment of US$2.3 billion, and had a nominal 77,000 ktpd mill capacity. Mining, milling, flotation, and tailings impoundment take place at the mine site, which sits at an altitude of 4,300 m above sea level. The deposit is a polymetallic skarn ore body with intrusive phases of quartz-monzonite porphyry into Cretaceous aged limestone. Copper is present mainly as chalcopyrite with a minor bornite component. Zinc is present as sphalerite. Molybdenum is present as molybdenite. Some lead, bismuth, and silver are associated with the sulphides. The deposit is currently classified into six main ore types [Dechert, 2006], grouped into two categories: copper and copper-zinc. The mill produces four concentrate types: copper, molybdenum, zinc, and lead-bismuth. Copper and zinc, concentrates are transported by pipeline down to the port of Huarmey. Molybdenum and lead-bismuth concentrates are bagged and trucked to port."

This article attempts to outline essential features of the Mount Isa ore deposit, to reveal the agencies thought to be responsible for its localization, and to describe methods used for obtaining and applying geological data on a commercial basis. Structural features are emphasized because they have proved the most useful agencies to date in searching for ore. Vertical depth, horizontal width and stratigraphic thickness are used throughout the article, and quantities are quoted in long tons.THE DEPOSITA width of more than two miles of evenly bedded shale of the Mount Isa series (upper pre-Cambrian) lies sandwiched conformably between quartzites. The series strikes N.S. and dips approximately 60° W. Shale is unaltered...Important geological work has been carried out by the Queensland Geological Survey, chiefly by Mr. S. R. L. Shepherd, in co-operation with the Geological Department of Mount Isa Mines Limited. In the study of clays and related minerals, the analytical techniques commonly employed in mineral analysis are not always applicable. The X-ray examination of a clay sample usually will show the major constituents, but often minor· clay impurities will not be detected because of line broadening and the similarity of the main lines of clay· mineral diffraction patterns, The petrographic analysis of clay minerals with clay particles as small as a few microns is usually difficult. With still smaller particles, a gross effect often is noted in which a mixture of several constituents gives the appearance of a single constituent with the mean optical-characteristics of the mixture. 3/ The electron microscope has recently been used to study clay particle shapes of various aluminosilicates. 4/ However, this method has not yet been sufficiently explored. The Chemical method in which a mineralogical analysis is calculated from the oxide chemical analysis has been discussed by Wilson 5/ and others, and many of the shortcomings have been pointed out. It should also be recognized that the variable alkali and alkaline earth content of bentonites makes it inaccurate to assign these basic elements arbitrarily to feldspar or mica in any clay that contains appreciable bentonite.

Since its inception in 1962, the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre has adopted the view that an effective method of training highly qualified engineers for the mineral industry is the pursuit of postgraduate research programmes conducted in operations, that is, in the mines and processing plants of the industry which the research serves. The paper describes how this is achieved in practice, at little or no cost to the taxpayer, and explores the strengths and weaknesses of this approach in the context of a dual mission for the Centre: 1. The postgraduate training of engineers for the mineral industry. 2. The production of useful R &I) for the mineral industry. Topics discussed include financing, relationships with industry and Government, the maintenance of academic excellence, research style, the marketing of research, and limits to growth.
