El presente texto describe el nuevo método para la obtención de cobre por lixiviación de minerales mixtos de cobre en medio básico, donde la disolución de minerales mixtos de cobre se realiza a través de un medio lixiviante compuesto de hipoclorito (lejía) y amoniaco en un medio básico. En ese sentido, se busca extraer cobre, a presión y temperatura normales por lixiviación con cloro acuoso - amoniaco, a partir de minerales oxidados y mixtos, así como recuperar el cobre contenido en el PLS mediante electrodeposición directa, obviando la etapa intermedia de extracción por solventes, para obtener como producto final cobre catódico.

The Downhole Seismic Imaging consortium was initiated by the Geological Survey of Canada and three Canadian mining companies to assess the usefulness of borehole seismic techniques for the exploration of massive sulphide deposits within areas of steeply dipping stratigraphy. Field tests were conducted over two sub-economic massive sulphide deposits located in Norman West, Ontario, and Halfmile Lake, New Brunswick, using various shot configurations and a three-component borehole receiver array. The Norman West deposit, or structures associated with the deposit, produce detectable seismic reflections as far away as 1500 m. However, these reflections are difficult to distinguish from fault reflections and lithological contacts near the base of the Sudbury Igneous Complex. At Halfmile Lake, the rock properties are favourable for direct orebody detection. The Halfmile Lake deposit has a clear but relatively complex seismic signature on the downhole data, showing not only P-wave reflections, but also strong reflected S-waves and modeconverted waves. Such prominent S-waves and converted waves have not been recognized previously in borehole or surface seismic data acquired over massive sulphide deposits. These waves add complexity to the interpretation but provide additional imaging capabilities. Reflected S-waves and converted waves should be considered when designing seismic surveys for mineral exploration.

Understanding relationships between mineralogy, texture, microstructural features, and element distribution and residence in minerals, is critical for accurate modeling of mineral weathering in waste-rock piles. The morphology of minerals and deformation structures, such as veins and faults, are important factors that control: (1) fluid access to the mineral surface to initiate dissolution, (2) the distribution of trace elements, and (3) formation of secondary minerals. We characterized the mineralogy, textures, and chemical properties of waste-rock material at three sites at scales ranging from outcrop to micrometer scale. A comprehensive hand-sample to thin-section scale methodology utilizing light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe, and laser ablation ICP-MS was used to thoroughly characterize the waste-rock material.

"The analysis of meso- and micro-scale textural attributes has been undertaken on ore samples from the Ernest Henry iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) deposit in NW QLD. Quantified textural data including grain size, shape and mineral association have been extracted from classified images of core with the aim to better predict potential mineral processing behaviours such as comminution, liberation and flotation. Data have been extracted from images of intact core at meso- and micro-scales using high resolution continuous images collected using automated core-logger technology, SEM-based and optical microscopy platforms.The results of this study will show examples of quantified size, shape and mineral association data from meso- and micro-scale classified images. Analysis of the data shows that there are domains of variable grain size and mineral association that can potentially be related to crushing and liberation behaviour. The trends that are observed at the drill-core (meso-) scale are consistent with those at the micro-scale. The results from the micro-scale analysis show that the domains defined at the core-scale have clearly different chalcopyrite sizes and shapes as well as variable bulk mineralogy.INTRODUCTIONInnovations in technology have allowed automated extraction of information about mineral shape, grain size and mineral association, i.e., texture, from meso- and micro-scale images of intact rocks. The large increase in secondary industries in this country, during the war and post war periods, has caused a shortage of capacity for the production of merchant bar.To overcome this shortage, an expansion of rolling mill facilities has been undertaken by the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. A small, but modern, merchant mill has been erected at Kwinana in Western Australia and a strip and skelp mill is under construction at Newcastle. The latter mill will roll strip and skelp at present being rolled by the Newcastle 10 in. Merchant Mill, enahling this mill to concentrate on merchant bar production.The Kwinana mill was installed to supply the Western Australian market. This state has a small population (approximately 658,000) and is not at present highly industrialised. It was necessary, therefore, to design a mill which would be capable of producing a wide diversity of sections and could be expanded as the demand increased. To begin with capital expenditure had to be kept within reasonable bounds. The design work for this mill, with the exception of a few specialised items of equipment, was carried out at Newcastle.All design work for the Newcastle mill was carried out by the lVIorgan Construction Co. of America. Although initially intended for rolling flat. products, the designers were asked to make the mill as flexible as possible, so that should the market for flat products decrease, this mill with additional equipment could undertake the rolling of medium sized sections.

Magnetic separation is an age-old technique for mineral beneficiation operations. The existing mathematical models for magnetic separators are quite complicated, and it is very difficult to measure the theoretical separation efficiency. The connectionist approach of modeling, to establish the relationships of the inputs and outputs, is preferred for this kind of problem. Experiments were carried out on a high-intensity roll magnetic separator to develop a database using four input variables (magnetic flux intensity, particle size, splitter position and roll speed) and two output variables (weight recovery and Fe recovery). The artificial neural network (ANN) and statistical methods (MLRG) were used to model the magnetic separation process. For the ANN, the regression coefficient (R2) values between the predicted and measured results were 0.89 and 0.94 for Fe recovery and weight recovery, respectively. Compared to ANN, the multivariable linear regression analysis showed inferior performance in predicting the weight recovery and the Fe recovery. The ANN models for the roll magnetic separator can predict the separation efficiency up to an acceptable limit. These models can be used to modify the operational parameters at mineral beneficiation plants to minimize the effects of variations in the raw material characteristics.

Drilling activity increased in Illinois in 1935. There were 34 com-pletions as compared with 26 in 1934 and 18 wells were drilling at the end of 1935. Some large blocks of acreage were leased in Marion and Clay counties near the central part of the Illinois structural basin. Production of oil in the state totaled 4,305,000 bbl., a decrease of 4 per cent from that of 1934 There was some curtailment of production in the early part of 1935 but none after April 30 as shown in the following table. Rolling disc cutters are the business end of hard-rock and mixed-face tunnel boring machines (TBMs). Since their first successful employment on a TBM more than 50 years ago, disc cutter technology has constantly evolved, allowing modern TBMs to excavate very hard and abrasive rock efficiently. Disc cutters have also been employed successfully on earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry machines, cutting rock under water and ground pressure. The range of materials excavated by machines today is broader, excavation rates are higher and cutter costs are lower than ever before, proving the value of investment in cutter development. Disc cutters are used on a range of tunneling equipment, from pipe jacked slurry micro-TBMs less than 1 m (3.3 ft) in diameter to 15 m (49 ft) in diameter, hard-rock boring TBMs. The geological conditions under which they are employed range from sands and gravels, with several bar of water pressure, to extremely hard, massive rock with UCS up to 420 MPa. Regardless of the type of machine or geology, one thing remains constant: changing worn out cutters is costly. When cutters must be changed in the middle of a tunnel, the contractor incurs the cost of downtime as well as the cost of refurbishing or replacing the cutters. In the case of catastrophic cutter failures, the project can be stopped completely for long periods, and the costs mount up rapidly while tunnel production is at a stand still. Catastrophic cutter failures include the occasion when hard-rock disc cutters are failed in groups (called a ?wipeout? phenomenon) and the operator fails to stop the machine, which results in severe damage to the cutterhead. The cause of this can be either an undetected failed cutter propagating damage to surrounding cutters or operator error in steering. Regardless of the cause, the resulting damage can take days or even weeks to repair. When cutters fail prematurely on EPB or slurry machines in certain geological conditions, it is impossible to evacuate the chamber and, therefore, impossible to get [ ] into the chamber to change the cutters. The solution is frequently an unplanned intervention shaft that must be sunk at great cost. The importance of being able to predict cutter life accurately, and in all geological conditions, cannot be overemphasized. For these reasons, cutters have been developed for specific machine types and sizes, as well as for specific geological operating conditions. Different size cutters are required for different size machines. For example, while 483- and 508-mm (19- and 20-in.) cutters are used on large diameter TBMs, it is impossible to employ cutters so large on a small micro-TBM. Also, the cutter must be designed for the specific geological conditions under which it will be operating. The disc cutter rings required to bore extremely hard rock are the most expensive of cutter rings. However, they provide little advantage in weaker rock formations where less expensive rings will do the job as well. It is important to choose the correct cutter for the machine and the geological conditions in order to get the best balance of cost and risk.

State and federal agencies during rehabilitation of existing bridges may require the existing bridges to be evaluated under seismic conditions. If the bridge does not perform under the seismic event, the bridge may require seismic retrofitting. Bridges are classified as: Critical, Essential, and Others according to their importance. Geotechnical considerations play a major role in evaluating the bridge behavior under a seismic event. Subsurface conditions influence the magnitude of ground acceleration and hence the forces and moments on the superstructure. This paper will provide a detailed description of the geotechnical aspects associated with the seismic retrofit evaluation for the 12th Street and 14th Street Viaducts located in Jersey City, New Jersey. The paper will also present a description of the geotechnical investigation program including seismic cross-hole surveys to determine the dynamic soil parameters, including the results of site-specific response spectra for both the 475 and 2475-year events. Liquefaction assessment methodology utilizing an equivalent factor of safety will also be described and the design method used will be summarized. In general, the pile foundation is modeled as 6x6 foundation stiffness matrix with 36 stiffness coefficients at the center of the pile cap. The seismic loading on the foundation is evaluated in a pseudo-static analysis, where the dynamic earthquake-induced loads are presented by static forces and moments. The computer program FB Pier was used to evaluate the foundation stiffness. The moments, axial loads, and shear are input into the FB Pier model. The stiffness of the foundation is determined and the results are then input into the Structural model to determine new forces and displacements. Adjustments are made until the loads are compatible with the stiffness used. The understanding of the geotechnical conditions at the 12th Street and 14th Street Viaducts and the coordination between the Bridge and Geotechnical Engineers were able to provide significant cost saving to the Owner. The Design Engineers were able to retrofit the existing Viaduct foundations with reasonable number of additional piles. It is believed that the results and finding presented in this paper will benefit both the Bridge Engineers and Geotechnical Engineers by highlighting the importance of interaction between the two disciplines.

"Advanced Flotation Technology is the application driven design of Don-Oliver flotation cells to achieve the optimum performance for each type and grind of flotation. Optimum performance is the combination of both recovery and selectivity.Optimized performance is the combined product of optimized mixing and effective froth removal. Optimized mixing is applied to roughers, scavengers, cleaners and specialty cells such as those to float hydrocyclone underflows in both primary and regrind circuits in order to reduce overgrinding. Effective mixing for fine material is easy, but overmixing reduces selectivity in frothbed.Selectivity in flotation is an important target, especially when treating complex ores, and parameters in frothbed have been examined to improve the separation of minerals and eliminate circumstances that reduce separation rate.Advances in process control have been achieved with expert controls and instructive operator information data. This has gained a higher degree of understanding of cell operation and ore type being processed to be used in future process development work. Excellent results of this Advanced Flotation Technology have been achieved and designs through 7000 cu ft (200 m3) are currently available for high capacity concentrators. This paper will detail how flotation cells are more responsive to the exact requirements of the duty specified."

"INTRODUCTION This paper is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines pertaining to an investigation on the use of stemming in metal mines now being conducted at the Mount Weather Testing Adit. Its purpose is to compare the amount of dust and gases produced as a result of blasting charges of dynamite (1) in drill holes, (2) in bombs, and (3) in mud-cap or adobe shots.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSValuable assistance and advice on stemming were given by members of the staff at the Bureau of Mines, as acknowledged in previous publications. 4/TEST PROCEDUREThe results used for comparison in this report are from dust and gas samples taken after blasting (1) four regular test rounds with no stemming, (2) five bomb shots, and (3) two mud-cap or adobe shots.The four rounds were the standard 26-hole test rounds designed to break 4 feet of rock. The procedure for drilling and blasting these rounds is described in Report of Investigations 3509.Before the regular test rounds were blasted, about 1,200 bounds of fine rock was placed on the steel mucking sheets that covered the end of the adit track; the wails, hack, and floor of the adit were washed thoroughly; and the fine rock on the mucking sheets was completely wetted.Each of the 5 bomb shots consisted of 10 sticks of dynamite tied together and hung at midpoint of the adit, 8 feet from the fall."

Injury experience at coal mines and mechanical-cleaning plants (excluding officeworkers ) in 1967 was 222 fatal and 10,115 nonfatal disabling work injuries during an exposure time of 241.8 million man-hours. These injuries occurred at a frequency rate of 42-75 per million man-hours worked; the severity rate was 7,699 days lost or charged per million man-hours. Each of these general measures of injury experience was lower than similar data recorded for 1966. Employment at 6,885 coal mines and 569 mechanical-cleaning plants, excluding officeworkers, averaged 139,312 men in 1967. The average number of days worked was 220. Coal production totaled 560.8 million short tons, at rates of 2.32 tons per man-hour and 18.32 tons per man-day. A total of 2,779 onsite officeworkers at coal mines and mechanical- cleaning plants worked 5.2 million man-hours in 1967 without a disabling work injury.

When a large area of open gob collapses suddenly, a windblast is produced that can cause considerable damage throughout the infrastructure of a mine. In a few cases, the windblast has been accompanied by ignitions of methane and/or coal dust. This paper describes the conduct and results of laboratory tests involving the compression of mixtures of air, methane and coal dust under a falling weight and while allowing controlled escape of the mixture. The transient responses on pressure and temperature sensors were recorded. In addition to an analysis of those records, the paper highlights those conditions in which ignitions occurred.

Precipitated calcium carbonate is used as a filler and coating material in the manufacturing of paper because of its high brightness and light scattering characteristics. However, beneficiated calcite has similar potential, given the fact that the industrial specifications are already achieved. For paper industries, the requirement is that the desired product should be pure and have a brightness of 93 to 95 percent. A very-high-grade calcite deposit of around 92 percent is located in the north of Norway, which is used as the raw material for ground calcium carbonate (GCC) feed for the paper industries. There is a substantial amount of calcite resource, which has pyrite and pyrrhotite as major impurities. These sulfides, even when present in minor concentrations, impart color to the end product (paper). Removing these minerals is estimated to increase utilization of the deposit by 10  percent, which represents several million tonnes of calcite marble. Due to the requirement for environmentally friendly reagents and chemicals by the mineral industry, fatty di-amines are being tested for pyrite and pyrrhotite flotation. The interaction mechanism of diamine with the main components of the ore were studied and optimum conditions for removal of sulfide impurities are outlined.

The city of Indianapolis has more than 25,000 homes currently on septic systems. Many of these systems do not function well because of their age and surrounding soil conditions. As Indianapolis has worked to eliminate septic systems and install sanitary sewers in large unsewered areas on the north-west side, capacity of the existing Belmont North Interceptor (BNI) became a concern. The BNI system currently services an area of approximately 80 km2 (31 sq miles) located within the northwest quadrant of the city (Fig. 1). Monitoring of the existing interceptor indicated portions of the sys-tem flowing half- to two-thirds full during dry weather conditions and surcharging during some wet weather conditions. Further analysis of the BNI based on growth projections coupled with increased sewershed yield resulting from the city?s septic tank elimination program (STEP) indicated dry-weather flows could potentially triple over the next 20 years. Based on these modeling results and current wet weather capacity issues, the city determined further STEP projects could not be performed within the BNI service area until

SOME of the more important properties of finished materials are strength, ductility, toughness, resistance to alternating and repeated stresses, etc: Of these, the property that appears to have received the least consideration, at least in this country, is toughness, which is clue, possibly, to our regarding toughness as a qualitative property or, at any rate, as one that, parallels ductility. This arises out of our greater experience with the simple carbon steels in the rolled or forged (non-heat-treated) condition which, qualitatively, are tough if ductile and are not tough if brittle. In this way we have erroneously become, accustomed to judging the toughness of a material from its behavior in the tensile or similar test. The point of view presented in the present paper is that toughness, like hardness or tensile strength, should be regarded as an independent property and of sufficient importance to require, in so far as that may be possible, quantitative determinations. If such be true, it becomes at once necessary to devise experimental means for measuring, or valuating toughness, and the notched-bar impact test (the Charpy test) is advanced as the most logical test that has so far been developed for this purpose. It is further advanced, with particular emphasis, that we have two kinds of toughness to deal with and, accordingly, they will be dealt with independently. CLASSIFICATION OF MATERIALS ACCORDING TO TOUGHNESS Toughness has been defined somewhat as follows: Tough materials are those that offer considerable resistance to permanent deformation but which, once such resistance has been overcome, may' be deformed plastically, but only by the expenditure of considerable energy. In other words; tough materials may be deformed plastically but they absorb a considerable amount of work in the process. The Morning Star mine is one of numerous historically mined gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield of southwest Fiordland. The mine is hosted in Early Ordovician metasedimentary rocks that are composed predominantly of psammitic and pelitic lithologies. These rocks still contain their primary depositional features and are characterised by upper greenschist facies metamorphic grade.   The Morning Star mine lies on the eastern limb of a gently south plunging anticline. A bedding parallel fault-vein and an associated network of minor quartz veins hosts mineralisation. The main fault-vein structure strikes N-NW, dips steeply (~60¦) W, has a strike length of ~350 m, a vertical extent of ~170 m and is up to 2 m in thickness. The internal structure of the fault-vein consists of laminated quartz, massive and fibrous quartz, and silicified breccias/cataclasites. Gold is typically coarse grained (~1 - 2 mm) and associated with pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite and galena. The geometry of the Morning Star mine is similar in form to that of a saddle reef. Gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield are comparable in geometry and host rock to their offset equivalents in the Golden Blocks field of NW Nelson.
