The Autogenous Fine Grinding Kelsey Axial Displacement (KAD) Mill The marginal improvements which continue to be made to fine grinding practices have exposed the limits of conventional technologies and highlighted the need for a radically new approach. The patented autogenous Kelsey Axial Displacement (KAD) Mill design consists of a rotating spherical grinding chamber, which shares the same spherical centre as the shaft-mounted counter-rotating disc assembly. The axis of the disc assembly can be inclined to the axis of the spherical grinding chamber by pivoting the disc shaft about the common spherical centre. The inter-particle energy transfer required for breakage results from particle velocity differentials created by the discs intercepting the rotating mass. Particle size reduction is concentrated in high shear zones, which envelop the outer surface and periphery of the discs. This paper traces the development of the KAD Mill from pilot to commercial scale. Pilot work covers a range of minerals including magnetite, calcite, dolomite, barite, limestone and talc. Test results include open and closed circuit operation in wet and dry modes. Conventional milling constraints and energy consumption issues are addressed while new dimensions are added to the feed size range acceptable for wet and dry grinding to fine and ultra-fine sizes.

IN MAY, 1930, G. LaBine and E. C. St. Paul, prospect¬ing round the southeastern shore of Great Bear Lake, in the North West Territories of Canada, discovered pitchblende at what is now LaBine Point. At the same time, they also found native silver in a small sheared break on an island lying off the point. Late in 1930, samples of the pitchblende were sent to the Mines Branch, at Ottawa. The material consisted of several fair-sized slabs of botryoidal pitchblende banded with a brownish quartz. A small amount of chalcopyrite was visible as small particles and fine veinlets, and the pieces were rather heavily stained a yellowish-green by secondary copper-uranium salts. Analyses were run in the Mines Branch Ore Dressing Laboratories on two samples, and small-scale concentration tests were made on one of them. The results of this work were published in a Memorandum Series report (No. 48) of the Mines Branch, in March, 1931.

The objective of the work reported herein was to evaluate state-of-the-art repeaters used in wireless communications to determine their suitability for use in extending the range of portable and mobile communications in underground mine applications. The scope of the work included wireless repeaters in the frequency range from LF (500 kilohertz) up to the one giga-hertz range. These repeaters included not only single-channel repeaters, that is F1/F1 repeaters for short range simplex party line communications, but in addition, F1/F2 type repeaters currently commercially available in the HF, VHF and UHF bands.

During the summer of 2015, Unisea Inc. sought proposals for the G1 Dock Replacement Project in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. It would be a one year project and construction was scheduled to begin in the spring of 2016. One aspect of the project was the requirement for a layer of armor stone to protect part of the dock. An estimated 30,500 tonnes (37,670 t) of armor stone were needed for the project. The source of rock was the Unisea Quarry due to its proximity to the project and the quality of the stone meeting all the required technical standards.

A wide range of drill holes and process streams are sampled for resource estimation, grade control, and contractual purposes in the minerals industry. However, despite the availability of training courses, conferences and both national and international standards on correct sampling practices, it is still surprising how often little attention is given to ensuring that representative samples are collected for analysis. The reason for this is that the responsibility for sampling is often entrusted to personnel who do not appreciate the significance and importance of sampling, with cost being the main driving force rather than whether the sample is representative of the material from which it was extracted. This seriously undermines the precision and accuracy of the analyses subsequently generated and can render the analysis process a total waste of time and money and expose mining companies to serious, potential, financial losses. Company management needs to reverse this situation and ensure that sampling is given the attention it deserves to generate representative samples for analysis.

Tailings embankments can develop a high phreatic surface if the original design for the embankment does not include drainage facilities or if existing drainage facilities become ineffective. Subsequent raises can develop a seepage surface due to a high phreatic surface that can lead to stability problems. The U. S. Bureau of Mines amended contract J0100013 to initiate this study of horizontal drains in tailings embankments. This study developed a technique for determining the length of and spacing between parallel drains through the use of the finite element model UNSAT2. The analysis is based on the combined output of a vertical planar mesh and a horizontal planar mesh. The slot opening in the drain pipe and the length of the perforated section are determined from an analogy to water well design. The pipe diameter and gradient can be determined from Manning's equation. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first attempt at horizontal drain design using a finite element model. Additional research is recommended in this area.

"This paper discusses how Bald Mountain Gold Mine (Ely, NV) dramatically reduced mercury production by treating process solutions with a liquid reagent based on organic sulfide chemistry. Cherokee Chemical Co. Inc. (Vernon, CA) markets this reagent as UNR 81 1A.A summary of the bench tests comparing various reagents is given. The ensuing plant trial is discussed and successful mercury removal results are presented. Data is presented to show that early removal of mercury in the process reduces the amount of mercury collected at retort. Data is also presented to show that use of this reagent does not reduce gold recovery. Plant trial treatment costs are discussed. Finally, the potential of this technology to substantially reduce closure costs as compared to traditional mercury removal options is discussed.INTRODUCTIONBald Mountain Mine produces gold. Mercury is a costly by-product of gold production because no revenue is generated from mercury. Traditionally, mercury leaches out with gold and follows the gold throughout the processing circuit until it is eventually condensed and collected at Retort. Minimizing or eliminating mercury production minimizes worker health and safety risks, minimizes environmental liability, and reduces costs. In the long term, minimizing mercury production will make mine closure easier and less costly.Bald Mountain Mine dramatically reduced mercury production by treating process solutions with liquid reagents called UNR 811 and UNR 811A. Several reagents were bench tested before proceeding with a plant trial. The reagent complexes the mercury to form an insoluble organic sulfide precipitate. In independent tests, the precipitate passed acid mobilization tests and is considered stable."

"The milling of sulphide ores inherently generates “thiosalts”, a series of partially oxidized sulphur oxyanions (S2O3 2-, S3O6 2-, S4O6 2- etc.), which make control of effluent treatment systems difficult because their natural oxidation produces acid with the potential to lower the pH within the treatment system and/or receiving environment.At the Xstrata Copper Kidd Metallurgical Site, thiosalt oxidation in the Tailings Management Area continues after buffer storage Ponds A and C where lime is added to precipitate metals and elevate the pH to within the required range for discharge. If the additional acidity generated during the continued process of thiosalt oxidation is not neutralized there is a risk that the final effluent will be non-compliant with regulated standards.To mitigate this risk, in 2007 a full scale pilot trial was conducted with hydrogen peroxide in order to force the complete oxidation of thiosalts prior to the lime treatment stations. This method of chemical oxidation had been shown to be effective at Xstrata Zinc’s Brunswick Mine. The pilot results indicated that a maximum of 50% of the stoichiometric quantity of hydrogen peroxide is required to reduce the thiosalt concentration in the No. 2 thickener overflow stream (feed to buffer storage Ponds A and C) to less than detection (10 mg/L); however, treatment was only effective in the presence of a 20 mg/L iron (Fe) catalyst. Since the hydrogen peroxide addition point at the No. 2 tailings thickener overflow typically contains <1 mg/L total Fe, a second reagent, ferric sulphate, was used to increase the total Fe concentration to the required level. The Eskay Creek Mine is a high-grade gold and silver underground mine in northwestern British Columbia. The mine started operations in late1994. For the first three years, ore was crushed to -50 mm(-2 in.), blended to satisfy smelter terms and shipped to smelters in Japan and Canada. Preliminary evaluations indicated that a complex metallurgical facility, requiring a large capital investment, would be required to recover the precious and other economic metals. So markets for raw ore were identified and underground mining and ore transportation operations began at a production rate of 300 t/d (330stpd).

The removal of rock blockages in mining operations has long been a risky undertaking, especially in high overhead conditions. Moreover, the assessment of where to put charges and the placement of them has been difficult due to the lack of visibility and safe access to the area. Traditionally, wedging long poles with explosives on them to keep the operator at a relatively safe distance has been the tried and true method of attempting to remove the blockages. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect system as it usually takes several attempts to remove the blockage. Each successive attempt results in even more dangerous conditions for workers and/or damage to the mine due to the successively larger amounts of explosives used until the hang-up finally comes down.Over the years, different ideas have been proposed to improve this process and reduce the inherent safety risks. Some of the technologies that have been trialled include projectiles fired at the hang-up; large, cumbersome arms; and massive amounts of explosives, each of which come with their own inherent safety risks that result in dangerous situations for miners and the mine.After gaining a thorough understanding of the process, Penguin Automated Systems Inc has developed a robotic system that is capable of working in a rock blockage safely. The idea combines the latest in telerobotics technology with 3D scanning and underground geospatial positioning. The hang-up removal is performed by scanning the inside of the hang-up to rapidly develop a geospatially placed 3D model for the operator to use. The 3D model is detailed enough that the operator can attempt to pick the ‘keystone’. A blasting engineer or the operator can then determine the exact position where the explosive charge should be placed in the 3D model and thus at the actual hang-up. The operator, controlling the robotic arm, uses the 3D virtual reality model of the robot system and the actual drawpoint information model to display the location information, the arm can then reach into the hang-up to position the charge using the kinematic model of the robot system. The 3D model is used to provide views inside the hang-up so that the operator can move the arm safely and precisely. This process allows the operator to place the charge (using the 3D representation of the drawpoint) from a long distance away. As the process continues, the end of the arm drills the rock and precisely loads the explosives. The robot then returns the blasting cable to the command station, which is located in a truck at a safe distance from the blockage.This paper will review the development of the system and present the results to date.CITATION:Baiden, G, 2016. "Declining ore grade, leading to increased material transport and plant throughput requirements, is one of the major challenges in the current mining environment. This is accompanied by rising energy and labor costs, decreasing plant productivity and the requirement for highest plant availability. Siemens’ answer is the latest gearless drive technology for grinding and conveying. Gearless drive solutions are surpassing the mechanical limits of conventional drive systems serving to utilize the principle of economies of scale. By elimination of various components of the drive train, the maintenance activities and spare parts inventories are reduced. The advantages are culminating in the incomparable availability of the Siemens’ gearless drive technology of 99.46 to 99.71 percent — as confirmed by real operational data from the Antapaccay Mine in Peru. It was the first plant worldwide to use gearless drives for both applications.The gearless principleThe principal idea behind a gearless drive system is to reduce the number of components and diversity of parts, especially those components that are at the edge of current manufacturing or power limits are eliminated. The used equipment provides the possibility to scale up and increase the power transmitted to the driven machine. This finally results in a possible increase of throughput respectively transported or processed material.In order to apply this principle of simplification, the components of a conventional drive system are examined. They consist of:• Driven equipment (mill, conveyor, slurry pump).• Components altering the rated speed (gearboxes, girth gear/pinion).• The electric motor.• Starting devices for the motor (VSD, CCV, LRS, clutch), which are necessary because a direct across-the-line start of high power motors with load would result in a significant drop in the line supply voltage.• Alternatively a variable speed drive (VSD) or cycloconverter (CCV) to utilize the possibility of speed variation during operation.• The electrical supply system (cables, switchgear, transformers, protection equipment)."

The authors investigated the nature, cause and treatment of 234 back injuries which occurred in 156 different situations in underground coal mines. A detailed interview was conducted with each injured miner as 137 variables were explored to provide a complete picture of the injury scenario. The miners worked at 23 mines in six states. An important finding of the study was that sudden movement, which occurred in 527 of the injuries, is a more frequent factor than heavy lifting in causing hack injuries. Along with sudden movement, other major injury causing factors were equipment seat design, lifting, cable handling, and slips/trips. No significant differences were found between the injury scenarios associated with lost time and non-lost time injuries; thus, both sets of scenarios should he used in doe loping back injury control strategies. Medical treatment and rehabilitation varied in content and quality. Dialogue between the medical, rehabilitation and mining communities is needed to develop an effective treatment strategy. Back injury control related training was found to be inadequate in most mines. Mine specific training for physical stress recognition and potential sudden torte release should he added to the training currently given. Based on the information collected in this study, recommendations were made regarding equipment design, mechanical assists and procedures for material handling, training, etc., which, if implemented, will assist in reducing the frequency of back injuries in underground coal mining.

To achieve safe and healthy working conditions in shaft sinking operations, ventilation, and where necessary cooling, must be provided. These requirements are considered for sinking vertical, sub-vertical and decline shafts. Regulatory requirements, determining air volumes and amount of cooling required, the various ventilation methods used such as force, exhaust, twin columns, air reversal using four gate systems and the equipment required to achieve this, are discussed. Consideration is also given to the sinking of single and twin declines using diesel equipment, calculating the air volumes required to dilute pollutants and the various methods for achieving this. Also discussed is the importance of having early ventilation design input to the overall design of the mine. In many cases ventilation can be the prime determinant for the size and configuration of the shafts or declines that have to be sunk.

The possibility of diamonds occurring in Canada was first raised by W. H. Hobbs in 1899, who concluded: "that the apex of the fan of diamond distribution probably lies somewhere in the strip of the territory bordering James Bay on the east." This was based on the occurrence of diamonds in surficial sediments at various locations south of the Great Lakes. There are two recorded discoveries of drift diamonds in Ontario: (a) the Peterborough Diamond, 33 carats in size, poorly documented and found sometime before 1920;and (b) the Jarvi Diamond, 0.255 carat, found during 1971 in Sheraton Township near Timmins . Both discoveries were in surficial sediments and their source(s) have not been located. During 1960, Selco Exploration Company Ltd. started a heavy-mineral sample program of river gravels in the James Bay Lowlands of Ontario. This was continued by Canadian Rock Company Ltd. (1962-1963) and the Ontario Division of Mines (1973). The surveys discovered the presence of kimberlite minerals in gravel samples from streams draining the Moose River Basin. A total of 53 pyrope grains, four magnesian ilmenites and one grain of chrome diopside were identified from 32 sample locations. A study of the distribution of these minerals suggested the kimberlite source rocks to be located along the north margin or within the Kapuskasing gravity "high" in the area immediately south of James Bay. The Jarvi Diamond, found on an esker east of Timmins, could well have originated from this area. During 1965, an esker was sampled by the Geological Survey of Canada, and the results attracted attention to the area south of Lake Abitibi. At 9 out of 34 sites sampled along the Munro esker, Lee recorded the presence of pyrope garnets and very minor chrome diopside.

With the production increase of Oil Sand in Fort McMurray Alberta, more efficient tailings disposal has become a priority for Syncrude Canada Ltd. A lot of work on tailings research and development has been compiled to determine the most effective deposition to increase reclamation options, water re-use and thermal energy recovery. Efficient flocculation of fine oil sand tailings is the key technology for thickening. It was identified that flocculation of fine transition/marine ore tailings using a single flocculant was not effective. The thickener overflow contains 1-4% solids content compared with the target solids content of <0.5% obtained with Estuarine ore. As a result, novel processes for treatment of fine transition/marine ore tailings have been developed at Syncrude Bitumen Production Development since June 2004. While the conventional processes using a single flocculant, a single coagulation, or a coagulant-flocculant combination was ineffective for transition and marine ore tailings, the new processes including Coagulation-Flocculation-Coagulation (CFC), Flocculation-Coagulation (FC) and Flocculation-Coagulation-Flocculation (FCF) were acceptable options. The key components of these technologies consist of the recipe of chemicals and their adding sequence. With these technologies, almost all sub-micron clay minerals are aggregated together and settle as a whole, resulting in a clear supernatant of less than 0.1% solids.

In this development and use, and in the prevention of economic and physical waste of oil and gas, the objectives of the petroleum and natural-gas industries, the Government (Federal, State, and local), and the public are the same. Differences of viewpoint generally have originated in the failure of one of the triad to have a clear or complete understanding of the motives behind the activities of the other component groups or full knowledge of what each is trying to accomplish. The Unites States Bureau of Mines through its petroleum and natural-gas division makes technologic and scientific investigations pertaining to recovery,3 preparation, refining, and use of oil and natural gas with the view of reducing waste, increasing safety and efficiency and aiding economic development.

"The Chatham Rock Phosphorite project is situated 450 km east of New Zealand at approximately 350 to 450 m water depth. The deposit occurs as a thin layer of phosphatebearing glauconitic sand at the surface of the sea floor and has a thicknesses typically ranging from 0 to 1 m. The sand layer consists of mainly silt and sand-sized sediments, with phosphatised chalk nodules up to 15 cm in diameter. Phosphate nodules were first discovered on the Chatham Rise in the 1950s by a New Zealand Government survey. During the 1960s to 1980s several private and government sponsored cruises explored the Chatham Rise and surrounding seafloor area. A total of 1174 samples were collected over a 600 km2 area with the majority of the samples collected using a pneumatic -or large Van Veen-style grab-sampler.Since acquiring the licence in 2010, Chatham Rock Phosphate Limited has conducted six cruises in two programs in the Project area. A total of 261 samples were collected using a Van Veen grab, box core and grab samples.Sample quality and QA/QC measures varied considerably between the cruises and within each cruise. A critical part of the assessment of the data collected in the Project area was to determine what quality thresholds to use to allow or disallow data to enter into the estimation process. As part of the data verification process, the relative and absolute quality of the data was assessed in as much detail as practically possible. The best samples were those that were collected using the pneumatic grab, sampled the full sand horizon, had a small location survey error and had no other apparent data ambiguities. This paper describes the challenges for mineral resource estimation for an unconventional style of mineralisation using unconventional sampling techniques."

"The Collahuasi copper mine, located at an altitude of 4300 meters above sea level in northern Chile, commenced operations late in 1998. The mine is currently the 4‘h largest copper producer in the world and comprises an open pit, a 60,000 tpd sulphide concentrator, a 15,000 tpd oxide heap leach and SWEW plant and a 200 km concentrate pipeline to a port facility.Constructing, commissioning and operating a mine at high altitude presents unique challenges in terms of the performance of both equipment and people. It is important that these be recognized and carefully considered during the feasibility study and the detailed design stages and the success of the Collahuasi project is largely due to this. The plant design incorporates a number of features aimed at mitigating the problems of altitude and the construction methodology also took into account the particular site conditions.This paper discusses the Collahuasi project team’s approach to planning for the remote location and also some of the problems experienced during construction, commissioning and operation.INTRODUCTIONThe Collahuasi mine is located in northern Chile, some 250 km to the south-east of the port of Iquique and 15 km from the Bolivian border. The mine facilities lie between 3800-4300 m above sea level on the Altiplano, the central plateau of the Andes mountains, and cover a total of approximately 95,000 hectares. Although the area is arid, it experiences an average of 150 mm of precipitation annually and weather conditions can be extreme. Temperatures during the day range between -3 to +11 º C and are generally below 0ºC at night, sometimes as low as -20°C. High energy winds are common and humidity is low. Much of the precipitation occurs during the winter as snow but there also occurs a period during the Chilean summer known as the “Invierno Boliviano’’ (or Bolivian Winter) which is characterized by severe electrical storms and rain."

The Sappington Bridge, a steel arch span bridge constructed in 1904 over the Meramec River, was demolished due to its advanced state of deterioration. The demolition was a project to benefit Crawford County, Missouri, the U.S. Army, the Missouri Department of Transportation, and the University of Missouri – Rolla (UMR) was conducted jointly by the UMR Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center (RMERC) and the UMR Center for Infrastructure Engineering Studies (CIES). By arrangement with Crawford County, a 55-foot span of the old bridge was brought to the University Structures Laboratory in Rolla, while the longer, 200-foot span of the bridge was demolished using preburning and explosives. Originally, the longer span was to be blown up by C Company of the 5th Engineer Battalion (from Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri) under the supervision of personnel from UMR. Unfortunately, permission for the operation from the Department of the Army could not be obtained in time to meet permitting requirements for the demolition. Therefore, a commercial demolition contractor was employed to perform the demolition, and to remove the scrap.

GermanyINTRODUCTIONThe mining industry is currently characterized by various factors such as environmental impact, resource scarcity, social responsibility and geopolitical uncertainty. The production of minerals required to meet the demand for renewable energy is expected to increase by 500 % by 2050, particularly for critical minerals such as graphite, lithium and cobalt 1. Easily accessible deposits are often depleted, meaning that deeper and more complex deposits need to be developed. Furthermore, investors’ value systems have shifted towards more sustainable practices. Alternative approaches to solving this problem are therefore currently being developed, such as the Modular Mining Systems concept for scalable and adaptable mining projects 2. Many mining companies have also taken important steps to become more sustainable, implementing measures such as proactive closure strategies, restoration programs and the development of renewable energy projects. In the European Union, laws such as the Critical Raw Materials Act and the Net Zero Industry Act support the mining industry 3,4. They see it as important for the energy transition and promote more sustainable ways of working in the industry Particularly negative environmental impacts such as land degradation, scarcity of local water resources, water pollution and greenhouse gas emissions are ingrained in society’s memory. Despite these efforts, the public image has not yet changed. To change this perception, the industry must strive to better communicate its sustainable practices and the steps it is taking towards a more responsible and sustainable future, promote transparency and build trust.Digitalization, automation and electrification are driving the digital transformation in mining. However, their implementation can lead to higher capital expenditure, limiting their adoption across the industry. Furthermore, implementing new technologies can be a daunting task for any organization. Change management comes into play when introducing such disruptive technologies. It involves preparing an organization for change, potential resistance and establishing effective communication. This helps to ensure that the implementation is successful and the benefits of the new technology are maximized. Digital transformation requires well-trained, young mining, electrical, mechatronic and software engineers with a deep understanding of information systems. Unfortunately, the industry faces the enormous challenge of attracting this younger generation, who have little interest in the extraction of raw materials. The need for action is compounded by an aging active workforce heading into retirement and the forecast of increasing demand for critical minerals.In this challenging environment, the concept of Blue Mining with its constant further developments represents a promising approach. This implies a shift from a linear to a sustainably oriented circular economy. For the mining industry, this specifically means the introduction of innovative technologies, the increased recovery of materials from waste and the consistent questioning and application of circular principles along the entire life cycle of a mine. Such a change can not only reduce the environmental impact, but also contribute to economic resilience and increased social acceptance of mining.
