The influence of coal desulphurization by fungus was experimentally studied. The present results suggest that fungus can effectively remove inorganic and organic sulfur in coal. The main factors that influence the desulphurization by fungus such as pH value, temperature, coal slurry concentration and coal granularity are studied by orthodox experiment and the optimal experimental conditions are as follows: pH value 6, temperature 45 C, coal slurry concentration 10% and coal granularity 100 m. Under the above conditions, fungus can remove up to 44.96 total sulfur and 54.87 inorganic sulfur within two days and their desulphurization rates will increase along with time. Compared to sulfolobas, desulphurization by fungus is steady and more effective and has the advantage of high speed.

Simple compartmental models of a laboratory batch gibbsite precipitator were used to investigate the influence of the number of compartments, the local shear rate and solids distribution on the crystal size distribution (CSD) under the conditions where aggregation is the dominant mechanism. In the current work, a power law relationship was assumed between the local agglomeration and shear rate. The simulation results showed that both the local shear rate and solids distribution have significant effect on the CSD responses, and the interchanging flows has a lesser impact with its influence strongly depending on the former two factors. Overall, the results reveal that in an aggregation controlled precipitation system, the influence of each of the factors on the CSD depends on the local hydrodynamic conditions in the precipitator, as well as their interactions.

The key point of the CX-EWS process is the conversion of lead compounds, contained in the active mass of spent batteries, into lead sulphide. The obtained lead sulphide is leached with ferric fluoborate electrolyte to dissolve lead and oxidize the sulphur from sulphide to the elemental form. The lead-rich solution is fed into a diaphragm electrolytic cell depositing lead and regenerating ferric fluoborate. The introduction of sulphate reducing bacteria technology in the sulphidization step of the battery paste improves dramatically the economics of the CXEWS process, reducing the costs of chemicals, avoiding gypsum disposal and minimising the unit operations of the process. This paper describes in detail this technology change with reference to the economics of the process.

Published data on thermodynamics of a number of minor elements (As, Sb, Bi, Pb, Zn, Se, Te, Cr, Sn) in liquid copper, matte and slag have been reviewed, assessed and used in development of thermodynamic solution models of melts. The behavior of antimony in alloys, mattes and slags is used as an example to illustrate the approach taken in assessment of published data and validation of the developed models with respect to the activity of Sb in condensed phases as well as the effects of matte grade, slag chemistry, temperature etc on the equilibrium distribution of Sb between melts and the gas phase. Results obtained from a comparison of different smelting processes with the modeled multi-phase equilibrium are presented and discussed. The predicted effects of slag chemistry and matte grade on the deportment of other minor elements during smelting of copper mattes will be presented and discussed.

The geotechnical characteristics of the ore are important in understanding the kinetics of a copper heap leach. These characteristics can indicate potential problems and can be used to determine the semi-quantitative changes in field kinetics as compared with column kinetics. The application of this approach allows a more rigorously based determination of ?scale up factors? than has been the case the date. The shrinking core model has been shown to be a poor predictor of leach kinetics based on the crushed ore size distribution. However the model itself is a very useful tool to analyse commercial heap data. Significant geotechnical parameters such as: bulk density / stress characteristic, limit moisture capacity and particle density are used to determine the effect of changes on the diffusion controlled leach rate. By consideration of the geotechnical reaction of the ore mass the leach rate changes are related to changes in these variables. Analysis of commercial heap data has indicated effective diffusion lengths of up to ten times the largest particle size.

In the blast furnace, the reduction of iron oxide and gasification of coke occur simultaneously. It is well accepted that the gasification reaction controls the simultaneous reaction. Therefore, it is important to develop highly reactive carbonaceous materials. It is also known that the reaction is accelerated catalytically with the addition of some materials. In the present work, the catalytic effect of iron, nickel and CaO on the gasification of graphite and coke was examined. The catalytic effect of iron, nickel and CaO on the reaction rate of graphite was noticed The effect was larger at lower temperature. At 1373 K, the effect almost vanished. The effect was larger in the order of CaO, iron and nickel. The reaction rate of de-ashed coke increased by the addition of iron and nickel. The effect of iron was larger than that of nickel. The effect was larger at higher temperature, which was contrary to the case of graphite. The reactive surface area increased also by the addition. Therefore, the catalytic effect on reaction rate might be attributable to the increase in the reactive surface area.

There are many experimental works on the investigation of temperature effect on the conductivity of polymers filled by carbon materials. However frequently the establishment of current nature in the polymer heterogeneous systems becomes difficult. This fact is explained by complexity of calculation of different physical or chemical phenomena passing in materials at variation of the temperature. Among these phenomena it must be noted some morphological changes in the structure of polymers. These changes reflex on the structure of conductive system of composites. So, it has been shown, that the character of temperature dependence of thermal noises level and conductivity of some polymers filled by carbon black essentially depend on some relaxation transition in the polymeric matrix. In this paper the effect of difference transitions in polymer matrix of filled by carbon black some polymers and rubbers have been investigated in a wide temperature range. The importance of such investigation is due to possibility of application of resistive temperature sensors based on conductive polymeric composites (CPC) to measuring technology. The experiments have been carried out in the cavity with regulation of temperature in the range 110-650K. The resistance of samples was measured by four electrodes method. The samples were obtained by hot pressing of dry mixture of powdered components at chosen temperatures, pressures and cooling time in the case of plastics and by peroxide vulcanization of the elastomers in the case of the rubbers. The samples were produced on the basis of the following thermoplastics: low density polyethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polycarbonate and polydimethylmethylvinilsiloxane.

La Caridad copper smelter is located in the magnificent but rugged Sierra Madre Mountains. This project presents unusual challenges that require the utmost in detailed analysis and planning. The smelter, owned by Mexicana de Cobre, S.A. de C.V., has an annual production capacity of 225,000 metric tons of copper and 600,000 metric tons of sulfuric acid. It utilizes only the Flash Smelting process. This project will expand the annual production capacity to 270,000 metric tons of copper and 1,000,000 metric tons of sulfuric acid. Offgases from the Flash Furnace and the Teniente Converter will be sent to a mixing chamber, from which it will be led to two sulfuric acid plants. This project will then produce a high quality sulfuric acid.
