Collectors commonly used in flotation to date fall into two main classes: ionic and nonionic. The use of neutral or oily collectors is generally limited to the flotation of nonpolar minerals onto which they are adsorbed by forces of a physical or 'Van der Waals' type, while ionizable chemical collectors are utilized for all other types of minerals, adsorption in this case involving bonds essentially of a chemical nature. Though chemical adsorption is more selective than physical adsorption, even heteropolar collectors are active towards certain classes of minerals (sulphides for example) rather than towards one individual mineral. Thus, in order to float a given mineral from a mixture of minerals belonging to the same class, modifiers have to be used to render the action of the collector more specific. However, there are often considerable difficulties involved in this procedure and the desired results are not always attained, especially in the case of minerals of complex composition whose surface properties are not sufficiently well known. Hence the importance of seeking out collectors capable of linking selectively with given minerals. Selective linkage is possible if the collector structure incorporates active groups having specific affinity for certain cations characteristic of the mineral surface. The decision to investigate the possibility of utilizing chelate--forming reagents for flotation was based on the premise that phenomena which occur in solution and involve chemical reactions in the strict sense of the meaning and those which occur on the surface are closely correlated (1)

Since 1950, rotary-drilled, large-diameter holes, "big holes", with depths to over 300 feet and diameters of over 30 inches have become numerous and widespread. Fifty such holes have been drilled for access shafts to LPG mined caverns, Over 70 holes have been drilled for various other commercial activities. Over 150 holes have been drilled by the AEC for atomic testing purposes. These holes have ranged up to 300-inch diameters with 1600-foot depths, 120-inch diameters with 570-foot depths, and 72-inch diameters with 4800-foot depths. Equipment is now available to drill a wide range of ?big holes? for varied requirements. At least a dozen drilling contractors are participating or have participated in the drilling of "big holes". The accompanying tables show pertinent historical, technical and economic data on over 250 holes. The illustrations to be presented concurrently with this paper show the various equipment and accessories now in use. (See Appendix I for captions of illustrations.)

In 1971, the Minerals Division of The Superior Oil Company acquired exploration rights to an unpatented claim group in the Superior (Pioneer), Arizona mining district, lying west of the Concentrator fault. This major post-mineral fault displaces the Magma vein-fault, which is mined in the Magma Mine at Superior, Arizona. The Magma vein-fault and the enclosing section of pre-mineral rocks consisting of Paleozoic and younger Precambrian sediments and diabase, is overlain by a thick section of post-mineral rocks, consisting of the Gila conglomerate, the Apache Leap dacite, and the Whitetail conglomerate. Geologic information on the thickness and attitudes of the rocks obtained from previous diamond drilling indicated that the section of post-mineral rocks might be from 3,000 to over 4,010 feet thick in the target area. (Figure 1) The Magma vein-fault is a steeply dipping vein which has produced nearly a billion dollars of copper, zinc, silver, and gold. It has been mined continuously for nearly 10,000 feet along the strike and nearly 5,000, feet vertically down the dip. It ranges from less than a foot to over 50 feet wide and contains sulfide mineralization con¬sisting of pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite, and chalcocite.

Goldcorp is one of the largest gold producers in the world with projects in South, Central and North America. Goldcorp?s flagship operation is Peñasquito, a world class, polymetallic deposit that started production in 2010 and is one of the largest mines in Mexico. Since the early stages of the project, Goldcorp has used the most advanced technologies available to maximize its value. However, the implementation of optimum mine plans has been challenging to put into practice. This is due to the fact that the mine operation involves more complexity than the plans usually reflect. This challenge is an industry-wide issue that presents opportunities for improvement. This article discusses the mine planning methodologies and procedures used to connect long-, medium- and short-term planning strategies in order to bridge the gap and produce optimum mine plans that can be practically implemented in the field.

India’s steel vision of 2030 requires a huge amount of quality iron ore. The utilization of low-grade iron ores such as banded iron ores will play an important role to achieve the same production. The absence of alumina impurities in the banded hematite jasper (BHJ) ore provides it an edge over other low-grade iron ores. The conventional beneficiation techniques such as magnetic separation and washing were found to be ineffective to produce suitable feed (Fe ~ 60%) for the blast furnace. It was found that microwave exposure provides significant enrichment to the low-grade iron ore and can be used as a pretreatment step in the beneficiation of similar low-grade iron ores. The above study reveals that hematite phase is susceptible to microwave exposure which enhances the separation of iron values from impurities. Under optimum conditions, an iron-enriched concentrate with 61% Fe, 85% Fe recovery at 50% yield can be achieved from BHJ feed ~ 38% Fe. The pretreatment process for BHJ beneficiation includes only microwave exposure without any chemical additive and may prove economical and industrially feasible.

An attempt has been made to compile and code geologic data relating to twenty of the major porphyry copper districts of North America in such a manner as to permit the use of modern electronic digital computers to retrieve, compare, and build statistical mathematical models from the input. In the exploration process as part of his broader efforts to evaluate the potential of some prospective region, district, or ore body, the experienced geologist consciously or subconsciously compares and fits the observed geologic features to similar phenomena associated with known ore bodies with which he is acquainted. Thus an adequate conceptual "model" of the total geologic environment and type of ore body sought is an essential requirement for the successful exploration effort. Numerous such models of porphyry coppers already exist in the minds and notes of many experienced geologists today. These models are, of necessity, couched largely in qualitative terms and though they may be quite definite in the mind of the porphyry copper expert, the total concept of what constitutes a porphyry copper deposit and environment is difficult to convey in very precise terms. There probably is no such thing as a typical porphyry copper deposit. However, it is well understood that most of the deposits that have been studied have many geological characteristics in common. A logical question then might be: What characteristics are most common or how often do they occur in common, and what is their relationship to other common characteristics ?

The prestressed concrete industry in particular, and the precast concrete industry to some extent, are rank newcomers to the concrete construction field compared to the cement, ready-mixed or concrete masonry industries. This young industry reflects its youth and vigor in its enthusiasm, optimism and the belief that it can reach any goal it chooses to set -- and it is setting its sights high. The prestressed and precast concrete industry fully expects to become the major structural and architectural material by the 1980's. Before exploring how the industry expects to reach this goal, a brief look at the origins and the growth of the industry may be useful in an evaluation of the feasibility of this goal. It was always recognized that concrete, strong and efficient for supporting loads which cause compression, was weak and inefficient when used to carry loads which induce tension. Thus the reason for reinforced concrete in which the concrete efficiently carries the compression in a flexural member while low grade steel bars reinforce the concrete in the areas 'of tensile stress. (Fig. 1). The steel being relatively inexpensive, can passively, but quite effectively carry tensile force while the concrete carries compression. The concrete in contact with the reinforcing also protects the steel from corrosion and acts as insulation to provide a superior "built-in" fire resistance. The major disadvantage of reinforced concrete relative to its main competitor, steel, is its weight in relation to its load-carrying capacity. Boreholes are used for many purposes in mining operations, petroleum engineering, and construction works. Numerous factors affect the performance of drilling equipment. Researchers continue to work on the variable drilling parameters that can be adjusted in order to reach more efficient drilling operations. Penetration rate is an essential indicator in drillability analysis and estimating. This parameter is of great importance in mining projects. There are almost no models that can estimate the penetration rate for core drilling operations. Under the abovementioned circumstances, this paper focuses on developing models that allow estimating the penetration rate based on rock material properties. During the conduct of this study, drilling experiments under 11 different pressure forces were performed on 8 different rock units, and the equations which estimated the penetration rate depending on the physico-mechanical properties of the rock samples were derived. Experiments were carried out under different pressure forces to investigate the effect of the pressure force on the derived estimation models. The obtained results allowed deriving equations that ensured estimating the penetration rate based on the physico-mechanical properties of the rocks and the applied pressure force. Using these equations, the penetration rate in core drilling operations can be estimated.

Maptek, an international development software company, released version 3.2 of its Vulcan three-dimensional mining and geological software package. This latest release is expected to give clients better graphics performance and improved overall solutions. In addition, the company also released the NT version of Vulcan for Unix and personal computers. More than 800 code changes have gone into the 3.2 release, the Lakewood, CO-based company said. Many of these changes were in response to requests from Maptek's customers. Others have been motivated internally by the company to achieve better performance in its Envisage graphics interface. The introduction of hot keys and user-defined menus makes Envisage a more flexible interface and a more productive working environment. A new animation option provides new ways to enhance the organization and display of data. The animated data can include point, string, grid, triangulation and photographic-draped data. The shaft-mapping facility is also included in version 3.2. It enables the cylindrical view of the shaft to be unwrapped and displayed on the screen while the data remains in its true world coordinates. Major upgrades to Vulcan include underground blast design and geotechnical modules. The new blast design module allows the user to develop a ring design in any plane defined by the stope layout. Radial and offset holes can be developed. User-friendly editing tools make adjustments to the initial design a simple task. The user defines the plotting and reporting of rings and plot style templates allow flexibility in reporting. New features in the geotechnical toolbox include options to create daylight windows and pitch lines on the stereo nets. Geotechnical databases can be directly updated from the interpretation of the stereo net. Direct annotation of the symbols on the net is now possible and the stereo net display can be customized. Improvements to the documentation and links within the text have made the on-line help easier to navigate. Maptek also released the NT version of Vulcan soft- ware. The comprehensive design of the software pack- age for Unix and personal computers provides a three-dimensional geological modeling and mine planning system within a natural graphics environment. Users who require the power to manipulate extra- large and complex data sets will still be served by the Unix platform. Users who handle small-to-large datasets can now choose between Unix and personal computer platforms. The NT version will appeal primarily to companies that already have a personal computer network. Response to industry feedback was the basis for developing the NT version. "We want to ensure that our clients receive the optimal product for their needs," said Nicolas Simon, vice president of Maptek in North America. Some advantages of the NT version include: ? Most mining professionals are familiar with the personal computer platform. ? All of the familiar personal computer tools are now available to Vulcan users. ? Resource modeling tools that previously required the powerful Unix workstations have been brought into the personal computer environment. This will help mining companies save money. Recently, the North American mining industry experienced a severe recession, forcing managers to take dramatic steps to cut costs and compete in the difficult international market. Some of these steps were closing mines, reducing work forces, renegotiating wage agreements, and purchasing the most productive equipment. Managers are now looking beyond these traditional avenues and are focusing more on advanced technology. In the present environment, it is essential that mine operators obtain the maximum use of capital expended on equipment. However, mine workers do not obtain maximum efficiency or productivity from equipment because the adverse and hazardous mine environment impedes human performance. Also, the efficient use of large, complex machines calls for levels of precision that many times are beyond the capability of even highly trained miners. A possible solution to this problem is a machine that mines without operators - autonomous mining machines. However, numerous problems confront researchers who are attempting to develop such equipment. Some mining tasks are not always composed of a series of cyclic motions readily performed by factory floor robots. In addition, mining takes place in the geological environment where conditions are highly variable and unpredictable. As a result, these machines must be able to sense and adapt to variations in operating tasks and environment. Considerable autonomous vehicle research has been completed, especially for defense. However, autonomous vehicle (AV) technology has not advanced to practical application yet (King, 1988) and mining research is necessary in areas: representing mining specific knowledge; •analyzing and reasoning about sensor data in the mining environment; and •discovering completely new mining methods or new approaches to existing methods that become apparent when we remove the constraints imposed by the necessity of human operators. A specific machine, the LHD, can be used to show the problems for researchers who are attempting to develop autonomous machines for mining. This author chose the LHD because it can borrow concepts developed for autonomous navigation by military programs. But considerable mining research is also required. Furthermore, studies done at the Henderson mine, in Colorado, show autonomous LHD 's promise cost and safety benefits (King, 1988). At Henderson, LHDs load ore from draw points, tram to an ore pass, dump and return, or switch to another draw point. An autonomous LHD must sense vehicle position along the route, relate sensor data to stored-map information, to determine location, follow drift center lines, plan paths between dump position and initiate appropriate control commands, sense vehicle operating status and vehicle health, key on features or targets for special tasks like high speed turns, perform end of travel tasks (loading and dumping), and detect and avoid obstacles. These goals are similar to those for shuttle cars, trucks, and front-end loaders. Therefore, much of the technology is transferable. Each Henderson LHD extracts six to 40 dippers from each of a series of draw points. The LHD transports the ore to an ore pass within 55 m (180 ft) of the draw point, making the longest round trip 110 m (360 ft). The LHDs have very fast hydraulic dumping and loading systems that reduce the round trip cycle to less than one minute. Even though the LHD is capable of 500 trips per shift, the average production is 300 dippers. Man trip and lunch reduce available operating time to 6.5 hours per shift. Mucking difficulties (setting large boulders aside), operator breaks for activities like talking shop, and cleaning and smoothing roads further reduce operating time. Supervised autonomy can reduce the number of operating units by increasing operating time per shift since computer controlled machines can operate during lunch and between shifts and reduce operator errors. If dippers per shift increase from 300 to 350 (long-range goals are 500 dippers per shift), constant production requires only 10 operating LHDs and two spares. Manpower requirements drop from 24 to four by controlling five machines from one workstation. A review of technology available from the Autonomous Land Vehicle, the Advanced Ground Vehicle Technology, the Ground Surveillance Robot, and other programs, show the following differences between others work and mining industry needs: •If we focus initially on mobile haulage vehicles, we can navigate from a map. We do not need to explore. •We can modify the environment to reduce the navigation requirements. •We have a harsher environment than any of the research programs have encountered. •Our equipment must operate faster and more precisely than present AVs. •Our equipment must operate reliably over long periods of time. •We must have better onboard machine health monitoring and diagnostics. •The AV programs do not address geosensing. •The major AV programs are not cost-effective. For example, we cannot afford the computer power for robust image processing, yet. To computer control an LHD, we must replace the guidance and monitoring skills of experienced operators with sensors, computing hardware, interfaces, and several software mod¬ules. It is becoming evident that traditional methods of econometric analysis are inadequate in estimating-the long-run supply of minerals. Econometrics is limited to extracting estimates from observations of the theory predicts that the least cost deposits will be exploited first.1 The estimation of parameters from past data then must lead to biased projections of the future. Mining conditions in the future will be worse than in the past and it is the impact of the future conditions on cost that we need to know. In this paper we present a methodology for dealing with this problem. We estimate a "cumulative cost" function that yields the long-run marginal cost of mining as a function of cumulative output produced over time.2 This is relatively easy to do for coal mining in the United States where exploration for new deposits is not a major factor in supply. The first step of the procedure relates cost to the rate of output and to the geological conditions of the mine. The second step combines geological information on remaining deposits with the cost function to yield the cumulative cost function. A central theme of both these steps is the interaction of economics with geology. The best deposits are selected first and in each step of the estimation allowance must be made for this fact. The problem of depletion is part of the general problem of structural change. The change through depletion in the nature of the exploitable mineral stock is only one factor that calls for an analysis sensitive to the changing circumstances of the industry. This paper describes a commercial installation of a sophisticated instrumentation and control system designed to maximize the performance of heavy medium cyclones. Samples of plant feed and its products were collected and analyzed for ash content so that measures of efficiency could be determined for plant operation under (1) manual control and (2) automatic (computer) control. The heavy medium cyclone control strategy and its digital computer implementation are discussed in detail. The sample results are analyzed and the economic benefits of automatic control are discussed. Results from the initial data sets quantify the economic benefits of automatic closed-loop control; viz, increased recovery and reduced clean coal variability have been clearly demonstrated.

The model originally proposed by Austin, et al., has been modified in the light of further investigation of the breakage laws in SAG milling. The model uses a fully-mixed reactor for short L/D mills and calculates the breakage of small particles by the nipping action of balls and pebbles. The autogenous self-breakage of larger lumps is treated as an effective means of fast breaking rock and much slower breaking rock. Experiments show that fast autogenous breakage can be treated as a first-order breakage with an overall specific breakage rate which incorporates fracture and chipping. Similarly, slow breakage incorporates fracture and abrasion. Autogenous breakage is cushioned by the accumulation of fine material. Simulation results are compared to results from tests in a 2 m diameter continuous pilot-scale SAG mill. Future work is discussed.

Hypochlorite leaching system is a strong oxidizing solution for metal sulfides, which are naturally associated with gold extraction. This study evaluated the hypochlorite leaching of refractory gold ore by using the response surface method–central composite design (RSM-CCD) as a statistical approach in determining the optimum condition of gold extraction from refractory gold ore. The studied parameters for the gold recovery were pH (4 to 6), concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 (0.5 to 1.5 M) and NaCl (2.5 to 3.5 M) in the solution. It was found that the maximum gold extraction of 82.46% (13.85 g/t) was achieved at a pH of 4.0 with NaCl and Ca(OCl)2 concentrations of 2.93 M and 1.08 M, respectively. The statistical analysis also revealed that the amount of gold recovery in chloride solution was significantly depended on pH as the main factor, followed by concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 and NaCl.

The limited lifespan, ever-growing demand, and significant lithium and cobalt content are responsible factors for the immediate recycling of discarded lithium-ion batteries. Discharged batteries were dismantled, segregated, and size reduced to recover cathode and anode material. The active cathode material comprises LiCoO2 (65.8%) and LiMn2O4 (34.2%) and was carbothermal reduced with recovered graphite in a microwave furnace followed by water leaching and magnetic separation. A Box Behnken statistical experimental design is used for process optimization. Both cobalt and manganese report to magnetic fraction, whereas graphite and lithium carbonate report to non-magnetic fraction and solution crystal respectively. The final product comprises of cobalt 73% and manganese of 14% with process yield of 36% and saturation magnetization of 76 emu/g.
