Pre-blast surveys are often conducted solely to document existing structural conditions and uncover potential problem areas. This paper presents a case history where the pre-blast survey was also used as a vehicle to initiate a public relations program with the occupants of a large apartment complex adjacent to a major excavation site. The public relations program, in conjunction with good blasting practices, succeeded in keeping complaints to a minimum. The presentation includes an overview of the project, details of the public relations program, some of the blasting methods that were utilized and a recap of the complaints received.

Several surface coal mining operations in North America are attempting to adapt microprocessor-based monitoring equipment as well as programmable logic controllers onto rotary blasthole drills, towards improving overall drill and blast productivity. These Monitoring While Drilling (MUD) systems permit the recording and processing of important drilling parameters such as rotary speed and torque, instantaneous penetration rate and weight on the bit, and enable the operator ultimately to optimize drill and bit performance. MWD systems on production drills in surface coal mines offer the potential to define mine bench geology in detail and in advance of explosives loading. Recent advance s in explosives and initiation technology will require such a detailed knowledge of ground conditions in order to be fully exploited. Additionally, the logic developed from drill monitoring technology will eventually enable full drill automation through feedback and control, once a more complete understanding of the influences of rock mass characteristics on machine performance is achieved.

At Bayswater Colliery various methods of controlling highwall stabii were investigated. The use of presplitting was trialled and its effectiveness measured. The presplit hole spacing and explosive charge were based on those succes& lly used in other coal mines in the Hunter Valley. The major presplit design parameter to be determined was the stand-off distance between the presplit line and the back row of the production blast. This could not be transfmed directly from other sites due to the difference between the Bayswater’s production blast geometry and geology to that of other sites. Using highwall face surveys and Orica’s SUR..YPlus@ software, the average back-break behind normal production blasts was determined. This was then used to select the stand-off distance between the back row production blastholes to the presplit line. While presplit designs are normally based on powder factor (kg/m2), the use of energy factor (MJ/m2) was also investigated as a possible design criteria.

This paper summarizes the investigation carried out on a wide range of rock types, subjected to high velocity impact to simulate explosive action. A Split- Hopkinson Bar apparatus was used to generate the high velocity impact. The rock samples included both homogeneous and isotropic, and anisotropic types. The strain rate achieved was between 600 and 12OO/sec, The respective measured dynamic compressive strengths were compared with their low strain-rate or static values. It was found that the ratio of the dynamic to static values ranged between 2.5 and 4.6. It was also determined that the high strain-rate loading produced finer fragment size distribution than the static loading. The fragment size distribution from the two strain-rate regimes has been further analyzed to establish correlation with rock types and the strength characteristics. The results also confirm that high strain-rate loading (i.e. high detonation pressure and high velocity of detonation in an explosive column) would significantly affect the degree of fineness in a blast.

The effect on an explosive column of the sharp transient stress waves generated during the earlier detonation of adjacent blastholes is of paramount importance to explosives users. Some explosives will sympathetically detonate under these stresses. Others may suffer a transient desensitization, arising from a temporary increase in the density of an explosive beyond certain limits and persisting until the explosive mass relaxes back to the original density. Some explosives are so adversely affected by these stresses that the product suffers immediate and permanent loss of sensitivity. These effects can be clearly seen while blasting in tough conditions such as burn cuts or wedge cuts and in materials, such as coals, that propagate shock waves well.
