Proper selection of the spacing distance between blastholes is fundamental to successful blasting. Its value directly affects the profitability of an operation. It also exercises control over adverse effects such as airblast, flyrock, generation of ground vibrations, and overbreak. One of the more significant factors influencing the spacing's specific value is the initiation firing time intervals used between blastholes. Examples are described to illustrate some of the problems that result when spacing and timing are not compatible.

A great amount of data defining the seismic effects can be collected with the proper instrumentation, however because of the difference in building materials, construction methods and foundations the characteristics of the seismic wave can not be directly correlated to the building response and possible damage.

Seismic studies have proven that the frequency with which shock or vibration waves are reacting on a structure, in correlation with the amplitude of those waves, has a definite affect of structural damage. Different structures will react to different frequencies. In the past few years, some major coal producers in the midwest United States have shown that with the use of highly accurate detonators and exotic timing patterns they have effectively been able to adjust frequencies and this has enabled the operators to continue their excavation of overburden in environmentally sensitive areas.

Accidents associated with the storage of explosives prompted regulating the locations of such storage at least as early as 1719, when an act was passed in Great Britain. During the following years various refinements to the regulations were made, but a major explosion in 1864 in which there was destruction and loss of life as far away as 10 miles, led to the landmark Explosives Act of 1875. This act certainly had influence on regulators in the United States: when Massachusetts established an explosives distance/weight table in 1904 they referred to the prior British work. Later, Colonel Dunn of The American Railway Association convened a conference of explosives manufacturers to discuss safe storage. From this conference the American Table of Distances was established in December, 1910.

Description of Project: The four photos show a chimney blasting operation in Vienna’s district of Floridsdorf on May 4 2011. The blasting was done with two types of charges. An internal charge provided a force of blast which resulted in 135 single electrical blasting caps initiated detonations on the basic ensured the straight collapse of the chimney. The preparation work was done by reserve force military engineers. The series of photos were shot by Elisabeth Zechmeister. She works in the Austrian DOD but not as a professional photographer; much more she did all activities in her spare time.

Metallurgical testing at Cobre Las Cruces prior to production at the mill was done with overburden gossan. Some of that test gossan was a very fine material, wet by the water conditions at the bottom of the pit. When processed and stored wet at the fines material 3000 tonne (3307 tons) silo, this material cemented in a very unusual manner.

The Pinkerton Tunnel open cut project is part of the National Gateway Clearance Initiative improvement project to achieve a minimum of 21 feet of vertical clearance along CSX Transportation rail corridor so that double-stacked intermodal railcars can be transported between mid-Atlantic states and their ports to midwest markets in the U.S. This project involved drilling and blasting of 1.2 million bank cubic yards of rock over a 14 month period while maintaining rail traffic of two passenger and 38 freight trains daily. This paper is a brief summary of work done on mining applications of high energy projectiles. Full scale field testing already completed has used cannons to drive a tunnel, drill large diameter holes, do secondary breakage in an open pit mine, and scale loose rock from inaccessible pit walls. Other applications are suggested in driving development openings, particularly raises. The method will be economically feasible only if cheap liquid propellants are developed.
