The smaller mining company with full ownership of, or participation in, a mining project is generally unable to obtain funding as easily as the major mining house. While the equity market remains the main funding source for small projects, debt fund- ing options are becoming more available. Many international banks possess in-house mine fin- ancing expertise which can assist the smaller company in financing its share of project development. A clear understanding is necessary of both the benefits and limitations of bank funding, to ensure that all potential sources of funds are properly considered and integ- rated into the financial plans of the smaller mining companies.

The paper presents a sound critical estimate of mathematical models presently used for the process of compaction of fine-grained materials. It shows the mathematical model of compaction developed by the authors, which was used to formulate the program of computer simulation of the process. The examples of computer simulation experiments of compaction of selected fine-grained materials regard the results of the experiments made by the authors on variability of external friction occuring in this process. Simulation examination presented in the paper crucially contributed towards the original method of selection of rational compaction technologies of fine-grained materials developed by the authors.

The production of stabilised backfill at mine sites commonly uses Portland cement as the binder. Calcined gypsum has cementing properties and is cheaper to produce than cement. This paper discusses the strength of fills stabilised with calcined gypsum. Laboratory tests were carried out on specimens prepared from tailings obtained from four different sites to allow for the wide variety of tailings found in practice. The results show that the gypsum-based fills can achieve a strength of 1 MPa using around two and a half to four times the corresponding amount of cement.

Expert systems have been employed in a number of areas for a considerable number of years. However, the traditional long development times associated with these systems have restricted their application. With the advent of powerful Expert System Development Tools such as COMDALE/X and the use of efficient development techniques, the time required can be drastically reduced. This results in the availability and applicability of this technology to a wide range of applications. This paper discusses some of the 'rules' which indicate amenability (or otherwise) of a particular problem to an expert system solution. Various problem types are examined and these are illustrated with reference to examples of their use at various operating sites.

The complicated mining-geological conditions in the Kuzbass have led to some difficult mining situations in the past. Now, with historical data, supplemented by geomechanical information and measurements, together with an appropriate kinematic theory, a more reliable basis exists for prediction and control of the geomechanical state during extraction, with caving and with backfilling. Continued progress and improving reliability comes from data banks and computations, and now prediction of geomechanical situations is upgraded by more routing measurements and monitoring. Not only in the Kuzbass, but throughout the USSR, 14 dedicated groups are ready to solve various specific problems of prediction an control of geomechanic situations with assured increase in the quality of mining.

An assessment is made of the potential for thick seam underground mining of black coal in Australia. A brief summary is given of the geomechanical environment and previous mining history existing in a number of areas of particular interest from the point of view of thick seam mining. A classification of thick seam mining methods is presented with emphasis on the critical geomechanical para- meters influencing the performance of such methods. A summary is made of perceived geomechanical research requirements related to thick seam mining in Australian coalfields.

The Rum Jungle mine was operated by Territory Enterprises Pty Ltd who mined uranium on behalf of the Australian Government with operations spanning the period from 1953 to the final closure of the mine in 1971. In addition to the extraction of uranium from the open cut pits, copper, manganese and lead were mined and processed at Rum Jungle. During the latter part of the operation, and after the closure of the mine, environmental studies were carried out which were aimed at determining the causes of the pollution at Rum Jungle and identifying a rehabilitation strategy for the mine site. These studies identified sources of heavy metal and acid pollution and proposed a rehabilitation strategy which consisted of 1. recontour, construct impervious covers and controlled surface drainage on, and revegetate three overburden heaps,

Flotation is an important process used in the concentration of iron ores. One of the challenges for process engineers is the low metallurgical recovery associated mainly with the fines fraction. In this work, the use of synthetic flocculants in iron ore reverse cationic flotation was investigated. The flocculants utilised were polyacrylamides of high molecular weight and different ionic degrees. Bench scale flotation tests were performed to compare the flotation performance with and without addition of polyacrylamides. It was observed that cationic and non-ionic polyacrylamides cause a significant increase in the metallurgical recovery. The anionic flocculant did not improve the flotation performance. An adverse effect was a slight increase in the silica content of the concentrate. Flotation with polyacrylamides was influenced by the hydrodynamic conditions of the pulp, such as agitation and the weight percentage of solids in the flocculant conditioning and flotation stages.

In recent years, wide consideration has had to be given to methods of improving the condition of the mine environment in many coal mines, and significant developments and changes have evolved. Thus even after substantial increases inòair flow rates at the working place (they have increased over three fold in the last generation), environmental conditions have arisen for which it has been necessary to introduce or consider: i) additional ameliorative measures, such as good housekeeping; ii) layout changes: such as Y or Z layouts; iii) homotropal ventilation; and iv) air conditioning. In certain countries, consideration has been given also to: v) additional payments reduced working times; vi) heat acclimatisation programmes; and vii) the use of cold or cooling suits At many hot and humid mines, the principal benefits from adopting (i), (ii) and (iii) have already been realised. The paper reviews developments in general galvanising in Australia, including a brief history of the industry and its technology. The changes in galvanising process technology are covered, as well as developments in galvanising bath design, materials handling and pre-treatment. Developments in zinc management through the use of aluminium and nickel alloys are discussed. The paper addresses the cost components of general galvanising and relates this to the competitive position of general galvanising against other coatings used for protecting steel. The environmental aspects of the general galvanising industry in Australia are outlined with respect to the utilisation of process chemicals, problems associated with their disposal and developments in filtering and regeneration of process solutions. The current status of the industry is assessed in terms of zinc usage and usage trends. Likely changes in technology which may impact on the general galvanising industry in the future are reviewed.

Plenary Address Zinc is a trace element in all igneous rocks and its background geological occurrence roughly follows iron but at much lower concentration. Living matter reflects this abundance and zinc is an essential trace element for complex life forms. Thus, environmental issues include zinc deficiency in soils and/or water - and thus in local diets - and zinc toxicity evident in natural or modified ecosystems. Increased knowledge of the role of zinc in plant and animal metabolism emphasises the need to manage, within guidelines based on naturally occurring abundances, the concentrations of zinc in water, spils and in the food chain. Although recognition of the natural variability of zinc concentration provides some basis against which environmental protection standards might be set, the measure of environmental `pollution' is more commonly taken as the degree of change to natural, background levels, attributed to the particular land or water use activity. Ore Reserves are key mining company assets and their reliable estimation is crucial for both feasibility studies and the day to day operation of a mine. The reserve is based on the Mineral Resource after the application of certain technical and economic parameters. Engineering aspects of reserve estimation can be accurately determined to ¦10 per cent, however the majority of project risk will revolve around the resource. A final Ore Reserve generally contains a set of figures quoted without reference to its potential errors. Rarely are overall confidence limits quoted and, if they are, they often do not take into account many of the factors that cause uncertainty in the grade and tonnage estimates. There is thus an unquantifiable risk, which the operator should be aware of. This paper presents a review of the possible sources of error that might occur during the various phases of an exploration and estimation programme which are carried through into the Ore Reserve and hence mine design.

Iron-reducing bacteria are able to couple the oxidation of an electron donor to the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) under anaerobic conditions in the generation of cellular energy. Recent evidence suggests that these bacteria are phylogenetically diverse and widely distributed in nature. Our laboratory has isolated thermophilic, thermotolerant and mesophilic iron-reducing bacteria from numerous petroleum reservoirs with varying conditions, groundwaters of the Great Artesian Basin (GAB), and petroleum-contaminated soils. Some of these isolates have been identified as novel species and from genera such as Deferribacter, Bacillus, Alkaliphilus, Clostridium and Thermoanaerobacter. Further investigations have shown that these bacteria are metabolically diverse, not only capable of reducing different metal species but also able to use a range of organic compounds, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, for growth. Due to their abundance and metabolic capabilities, it is possible that iron-reducing bacteria may be important in microbially-enhanced oil recovery processes and in the bioremediation of contaminated soils and aquifers, particularly in anaerobic zones.

Mill scale, which contains a high proportion of magnetite and wustite, was added to the feed to the Whyalla grate kiln pellet plant during the production of acid pellets for domestic consumption. Its addition resulted in increased production -rates together with reduced consumptions of bentonite, fireclay and fuel. Mill scale was particularly beneficial when treating feed containing difficult to process, earthy, high ignition loss iron ores. Test work in the laboratory and subsequent plant experience showed that the magnetite and wustite oxidised in the drying and preheat sections of the travelling grate. The additional heat reduced gas flows through the grate kiln system, aided the drying of green balls containing earthy ores and increased the preheat strength of the balls. These advantages were offset to some extent by higher power consumptions to grind the harder mill scale and process difficulties caused by the contamination of mill scale with oil and coke.

The Newmont Waihi Operations mill has undergone significant growth over its life. Initially designed as a single SAG mill operation, the circuit has been progressively upgraded since 1988 from a nameplate capacity of 600 000 tonnes per annum to the current rate of 1.3 million tonnes per annum. With future mining potential there is renewed interest to increase the processing rate even further. Over the next twelve months five sustaining capital projects will be undertaken and two major eco-efficiency projects will be completed. With the exception of the large grinding mills, most equipment on a gold treatment plant is replaced after 10-15 years. Waihi Gold mine has been operating for 14 years and has just recently received approval to replace equipment in five main areas; carbon elution, carbon regeneration, scats crushing, intertank screens and variable speed drives. Each project has been justified on improved process efficiencies and operating/maintenance cost savings. The two eco-efficiency projects involve a water balance model and a cyanide optimisation project, both of which are Corporate key performance indicators (KPI).

The increasing market requirements regarding the quality of products, the enhanced predictability from detailed mine planning, the need for process consolidation and upgrading require continuous investigation on the characteristics of different ore types to be concentrated. This paper addresses the mineralogical and technological characterisation of several itabirite iron ore types and the influence of the composition and mineralogical associations on desliming and flotation. Pellet feed quality and the influence on the major performance indicators, such as weight recovery of slimes, selectivity index, metallurgical recovery, flotation kinetics of iron minerals and gangue is also emphasised. The investigation resulted in a classification of iron ores according to their mineralogical composition, morphology of the crystals, and/or texture and microstructure of mineral particles with respect to desliming and flotation performances.

Qualitative measurement of respirable dust in metal mines is limited and an example of this is demonstrated at Northparkes Mine, where operational experience was sought for measuring dust standards and identifying exposure limits. However, relying on operational experience has limited value due to variation in observations from person to person and is based on visible dust (which is larger in size than respirable dust). However, with sophisticated dust measuring equipment, like the real-time aerosol monitor, dust concentrations can be accurately measured and recorded concisely. Research conducted as part of a collaborative agreement on behalf of Northparkes to launch an occupational dust monitoring program was implemented on the mine site. To form the basis of this research, it was hypothesised that no proper dust measuring testing at the mine site had been adequately identified. In addition, existing occupational hygiene monitoring programs did not adequately quantify employee exposures to these hazards. This project will outline the results of an occupational dust monitoring program, hence greatly improving the capacity to quantify the health risks posed to employees.

Confidence in Yakabindie becoming a truly cost competitive nickel project has risen recently because of: ò the emergence of an economically effective contract mining climate; ò the delivery of cheaper energy via the Goldfields Gas Pipeline; and ò the development of the Yakabindie Process for production of nickel cathode and cobalt by-product directly from sulphide concentrates at site, dramatically cutting capital and operating costs compared to the conventional route. Development of the Yakabindie Process was a result of 'necessity being the mother of invention'. Yakabindie can now break out of the trap of relying on existing downstream processors to treat an intermediate, and instead the project can gain direct market access. The very attractive cost advantages demonstrate that hydrometallurgical processing of sulphide concentrates is a worthy prize. Improved cobalt recoveries, and tolerance of higher levels of magnesium and arsenic than allowable by smelters, are further advantages of this approach. Leach residues are combined with much larger quantities of naturally alkaline flotation tailings and remain at site. As a result the process is more environmentally sensitive than the conventional smelt/refine route, with no sulphur dioxide gas emissions and 'metal only out the gate'.

Ranger Uranium Mines Pty. Ltd. operates an open pit mine and ore treatment plant in the Northern Territory designed to produce 3 000 tonne/yr of U308 in yellowcake from 3 500 tonne/day of mill feed. The construction of this project was completed in 1981, 12 years after the discovery of the orebody. Wright-Davy, a Joint Venture of Wright Engineers and Davy McKee Pacific, were the Project Managers and Designers of the $270 million ore treatment plant and associated infrastructure. The project was designed in Sydney in -an office integrated with the Client, staffed by 35 key personnel drawn from Wright Engineers and Davy McKee, supplemented by personnel hired for the project. The peak Wright-Davy workforce in Sydney of 200 contained 113 design staff. The design principle of using the best practicable proven technology resulted in a plant which easily produces its design output using ore types outside the design criteria. The structuring of the project systems and industrial relations policies contributed to construction being completed within time and under budget. The plant was built without any major industrial dispute occurring and no dispute arose due to the uranium issue.
