Maintaining carbon activity is critical to the satisfactory recovery of gold in the Carbon-in-Pulp (C.I.P.) process. Reduced activity can lead to gold losses in tails and lower tonnage throughput.Carbons from a number of W.A. C.I.P. circuits have been examined for the extent of fouling by inorganics such as calcium, magnesium, copper, nickel and silicon. Many of these carbons have exceedingly low activity leadingto low gold loading and excessive contact times. The relative importance of these fouling agents and cyanide levels on carbon activity is discussed. Mathematical modelling shows that relatively small improvements in kineticactivity lead to much lower tank volume require-ments and carbon residence times.

The reliable estimation of ore reserves in mineral sand deposits depends on drilling methods and assay techniques that have been specially developed within the industry. Improvement of these techniques is a continuing process, as variations within and between deposits are highlighted during the actual mining operation. Constant monitoring of metallurgical losses along with mineral production allows comparison of mineral tonnages accounted for by mining, with original calculated reserves. A review of ore reserves in the Jerusalem Creek field from scout drilling in the sixties, through mining in the seventies, shows the progression from understatement prior to mining, to the present when more than two thirds of the reserves have been depleted.

IT is intended herein: to make some brief comments on geophysical 'work in general and on the various methods, and then to refer to that branch which, perhaps, is of the greatest importance and interest to the metalliferous mining engineer, i.e., the variousmethods of electrical prospecting.The term geophysics was originally applied to those larger physical and geodetic studies and methods concerned with such purely scientific subjects as the investigation of the true figure of the earth and the determination of the stability relations resultingtherefrom. Applied geophysics and geophysical methods of prospecting are concerned primarily with the search for, and investigation of, useful mineral deposits concealed within the earth's crust and not readily detectable by the normal methods employed bythe mining geologist and prospector. The methods employed have been devised as a result of co-operation between mining men, geologists, and physicists, and, although steady progress has been made during the past 20 years or so, it is within the last four orfive years that the importance of these methods has been acknowledged by the mining world in general. Although many of these methods are still in, or have barely emerged from, the experimental stages, a steadily increasing list of important discoveries is attributable to their employment-more particularly in Europe and America than elsewhere. The manganese ore of Groote Eylandt is a shallow sedimentary deposit of Cretaceous age. There are a number of deposits which vary greatly in ore texture, density, percentage of matrix and thickness. The thickness in the present five operating quarries varies from 1-5 metres. The mine output in 1973 was 3 million tonnes of which 60% was blasted, the remainder ripped and bulldozed. The shallow deposit and its varying thickness create rather unique blasting problems which must be overcome in order to produce a minimum overall mining cost but not necessarily resulting in a minimum drilling and blasting cost per tonne. Future planning envisages the introduction of site mixed slurry explosives following test work and the application of a twin boom single operator rotary percussion drill. The paper outlines the overall developments,present and envisaged practices and the reasons for these changes.

The mechanism of flotation of potash ores with long chain primary amines has been assessed. Since at high electrolyte concentration in saturated brine the electrical double layers of the interacting particles and bubbles are entirely compressed, the induction time measurements confirmed the elimination of kinetic factors associated with the energy barriers opposing particle-to-bubble attachment under such conditions as could be expected. The lack of the kinetic hindrance resulted in the correlation found between the contact angles on the KCl surfaces and the sylvite flotation measured under the same physico-chemical conditions. The iep values and acid numbers obtained for various Esso oils tested as extenders in the flotation of coarse potash ore fractions confirmed the base oils with high content of nitrogen-bearing compounds to be good extender oils. The performance of such oils could further be improved by dissolving in them a small amount of long-chain aliphatic amine.

The technological advancement in computing power and the increasing demand for information processing systems spread throughout many aspects of a corporation's business activities has revolutionised management information systems departments. This revolution is manifest in the proliferation of mini-computers and micro-processors as well as the planned or unplanned migration from centralised processing to distributed processing. The total data processing investment in people, hardware, software and telecommunications has reached a high level in many organisations. Therefore, the cost of inadequate planning or ad hoc growth of systems can be considerable. The concept of MIS systems planning has gained adherence in recent years; however, there appears to be a wide diversity in the effectiveness and quality of corporate systems plans. To be effective a systems plan must have the support and concurrence of executive management of an organisation. A disciplined planning approach to systems together ,with the involvement of senior user management as well as MIS management is necessary to develop a satisfactory systems plan that forms the basis of a corporation's data processing strategy.

BHP BillitonÆs Yandi channel iron deposit has a large resource of approximately 1.3 billion tonnes. This is a bulk mining operation with a high degree of selectivity not being practical. In contrast the deposit geology is a complex interrelationship of primary channel facies, secondary enrichment of iron and a secondary redistribution of the major contaminants. These variations in geology and alteration can occur over ranges of hundreds of metres down to knife edge contacts. In addition, differences in primary facies and mobility during alteration often result in the iron and contaminants having different patterns of enrichment and depletion. Despite the scale of these operations, if the geological domaining is not optimal, significant errors in the resource estimate of grades and tonnage will occur. Getting the geology right has become a common clichT among mining professionals. However, in many situations, obtaining optimal geological domains for resource modelling is best achieved when there is input from geology, statistics and geostatistics. In this paper, moving window statistics are utilised to see through locally high variability to identify trends that assist in locating difficult to identify geological boundaries. After the creation of geological domains, univariate and multivariate statistics and principal component analysis assist in validating and characterising geological domains. Finally, variography and domain contact analysis are used to analyse the nature of the boundaries between geological domains. At the Yandi channel iron deposit, the inter-relationship between geological and geostatistical analysis has resulted in significant improvements to geological domaining and the treatment of domain boundaries during estimation of iron and contaminates.

A series of experiments were carried out with Hallimond tube in order to test the effects of different reagents. A good result has been obtained when potassium-n-butyl xanthate is used as collector for molybdenite and graphite complex are depressed by the depressor mixed with nigrosine and iron (III) chloride. The separating mechanism has been studied with help of many modem instruments.

THOSE who dabble in m.ining are no exception to the general rule that persons who know a little of a subject are apt to think that they know all about it. Some colour may be lent to the belief that anyone may succeed in mining when we hear stories ofsuccessful diggers and others who have accidentally dropped on to something good through no foresight on their part; but we seldom hear the contra account of the far larger number who fail. Those who go more thoroughly into the subject, and take up mining as a profession, know very well that it is not one that can be carried out successfully by rule of thumb, but when they point this out to the public they are credited with trying to make it a closed profession; and outsiders are for ever trying to find out the 'trade secrets,' at the same time spurning the main one, which is hard study, experience, and the ability to apply their knowledge.The average mining man is not rich. When he amasses a fortune it is generally through speculation rather than professional work, thought no doubt his technical knowledge may have assisted him. However, making a fortune and running a mine are twodifferent things.

The BHP Steel Group embarked on a Total Quality Control (TQC) programme in 1984 in response to enquiries from a major customer regarding procedures for quality in materials supply.The TQC initiative has been adopted by all seven Divisions of the Steel Group and covers a broad and comprehensive range of management and workforce improvement initiatives.The development of the TQC initiative in the Collieries Division of BHP Steel over the past eighteen months has resulted in important experiences and leanings.

The impact of moves to introduce Abori- ginal land rights was felt in the Northern Territory as early as 1972 when the Federal Government froze the processing of all appli- cations for mining interests over vacant Crown land. The Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act was finally proclaimed on Aust- ralia Day 1977 and since that date the mining industry and the Territory legislature have struggled to make the Act work. Despite these efforts long delays have been experienced by those required to negotiate mining and explor- ation agreements under the Act. In fact explor- ation on Aboriginal land has been effectively stiffled since the introduction of the Abori- ginal Land Rights Act. The Northern Territory government and the mining industry have both sought amendment to the Act to remedy some of its more onerous problems. These efforts have generally been fruitless. Some of the recommendations put forward by Mr Justice Toohey following his recent review of the Act would provide relief in some important areas. However, any such improvements are more than offset by a number of Mr Justice Toohey's recommendations which would severely disadvantage the vast majority of Territorians. A recent survey of mining companies seeking exploration licences over Aboriginal land indicates that many of the existing diffi- culties could be overcome without significant amendment to the Act but rather by the adoption of a positive administrative approach by the Land Councils. It is now up to the Commonwealth and the Land Councils to demonstrate that their Act can work without crippling the Northern Territory economy and its mining industry.

The mining industry in common with the rest of Australian industry is in the critical situation of facing a rapidly diminishing insurance market. Huge industrial complexes and massive mining risks with limits of liability of millions upon millions of dollars are becoming increasingly difficult to insure. Insurance underwriters are still reeling from the financial shocks of cyclones, floods and fires in Australia over the past couple of years. Risk Management which calls for manage- ment involvement in the control of losses offers a serious challenge to miners, industrialists and insurance underwriters alike. Without it the insurance market could disappear altogether.

In recent years stricter requirements imposed variously by the Companies Acts, auditors and the Stock Exchanges have resulted in annual financial statements of mining companies becoming more detailed, informative and useful. Standards of reporting on ore reserves have not kept pace with the improvements in financial information disclosure, despite the fact that ore reserves are usually the most important asset of a mining company. The ore reserve reporting practices of fifteen leading Australian mining companies are analysed against important specific criteria. In terms of detailed and meaningful disclosure, there is scope for major improve- ments in annual ore reserve reporting Practices.

Within the Ross River Basin, the following types of water were collected and analysed; 19 streams, 24 wells and bores together with 19 samples from the Ross River Dam. The waters were found to contain up to 269 ppm of silica and, although they meet the requirements for industry in all other respects, this extremely high figure means that two basic guidelines should be followed. All steam generation units, except those less than 150 psi should employ hot lime zeolite softening, demineralization or evaporation to remove silica. Cooling systems should only operate on a once through basis.

The results of shaft lining monitoring gave rise to an investigation of cracks observed in the structure. An hypothesis was made that the cracks might be due to stresses caused by energy wave propagation, triggered during blasting or by the rock falls. However, it could not be excluded that the cracks had their origin in the rheologic changes taking place in the concrete. To prove the hypothesis, an investigation of the scale of the increase of stress due to the energy triggered was undertaken. At the same time it was decided to attempt to determine the "damage threshold" for such material in the danger zone. In the paper the investigation and its results are presented, as conducted in one of the shafts. In conclusion, certain generaliza- tions are proposed to give a starting point in the consideration of similar problems elsewhere.

The metallurgical works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company is situated on the Derwent Estuary, approximately five miles north of the city of Hobart and near a relatively dense housing area. Zinc concentrates, consisting chiefly of zinc and sulphur, have been roasted at Risdon for 53 years;- recently at rates of 1, 100 tons per day. The zinc content of the ores is converted to zinc calcine (ZnO), which is a dusty material. The calcine is leached with acid to form zinc sulphate, which is then electrolysed to make zinc. The sulphur is oxidised during roasting to sulphur dioxide, part of which is converted to sulphuric acid and part is dissolved in estuarine water which is then discharged to the Derwent Estuary.
