Permian coal from Western Australia's only producing coalfield at Collie is the dominant fuel used in generating electricity for the State's interconnected grid. Collie coal is sub-bituminous, non-coking and has a low ash, medium volatiles and high moisture content. The seams were laid down in a fluvial basin which extended beyond the Collie Basin and included the Wilga and Boyup Brook Basins at least. Adjacent parts of the southwest Yilgarn Block are prospective for Collie-type basins. In the past few years significant deposits have been delineated within the Perth Basin, specifically on the Vasse Shelf and in the Hill River area. In the former area high quality steaming coals are correlated with the lowest coal bearing member at Collie. The seams are amenable to underground mining and because of their high quality, the coal may have export potential. Sub-bituminous coal deposits of Jurassic age are present in the Hill River area. Exploration has down-graded the prospectivity of the Carnarvon and Canning Basins for sub-bituminous near-surface coal deposits. Tertiary lignite deposits are present in palaeo-drainage systems in the southern part of the State and their potential for development is being evaluated.

A key aspect of seismic management for narrow vein stoping of the west zone at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine has been the development of a fully remote extraction method that does not require personnel access to sill drives within the orebody once stoping commences. Initially, sill driving within the reef is undertaken in a conventional fashion under geological control. Sill drives are developed at a vertical backs-to-floor height ranging from 7 - 12 m. This mining stage includes all activities prior to the commencement of stoping, after which no personnel enter the unstoped section of the sill drive at any time for any purpose. The key aspect of the remote mining cycle is the use of footwall drill drives paralleling the ore drive at a minimum separation of 6 m under survey control. These drives provide the platform for fan drilling of the orebody. Up to 20 m strike panels are blasted in a single shot using electronic blasting techniques. Ore is mucked from the extraction level sill drive using tele-remote loaders. Aerials for tele-remote operation are installed through boreholes from the footwall drive, negating the need for personnel access to the sill drive. Once mucking of a stoping panel is complete, a laser scanning survey instrument is used to survey the final void for subsequent design and production reconciliation purposes. The survey instrument is mounted in the bucket of the tele-remote loader, and is also operated remotely. Finally, tele-remote loaders are used to dump waste rock fill from the upper sill drive. A system of flags and cameras installed in boreholes from the footwall drive assists the operator in locating the live stope edge during the filling cycle, again negating the need for personnel access.

Mining operations require detailed and precise methods and procedures for the optimum selection of ore from waste. A fundamental procedure applied to achieve this selection is accurate sampling. The key parameter to accurate sampling is an understanding of the degree of heterogeneity of the key element contained within a sampling mass. This paper will describe the methods applied for the calculation of the fundamental sampling error and the techniques used to achieve a representative sample in the Fimiston Open Pit, Kalgoorlie.The utilisation of Pierre Gy's sampling theory has optimised the blast hole sample quality and quantity for submission to the assay laboratory. This has resulted in reduced cost and optimised assay reliability in statistical terms. Similarly the analysis of exploration drill holes for resource definition has optimised drilling procedures in terms of the drilling method, sample length and sample quantity.

Following initial plant scale work on the development and performance of 'spray' oil lances, a full scale room temperature model of the blowpipe-tuyere region of a blast furnace was built to study the basic aerodynamic features of auxiliary fuel injection procedures. Mobilwax 2305 was used as a substitute for Bunker C oil fuel in view of its similar physical properties and the fact that the atomised droplets could be frozen in flight and size, distribution analyses made for various operating procedures. It was shown that secondary atomisation processes far outweighed the importance of any primary atomisation procedures in determining mean Sauter Diameters particularly at high windrates typical of current blast furnace technology. It was also found that good spray dispersions across the blow pipe could only be obtaind for liquid fuels and that the lateral rate of spray dispersion was substantially enhanced by primary atomisation procedures. Mean particle diameters of sprays were found to be predictable on the basis of elementary stability theory and fell within the size range necessary for good combustion at all liquid fuel rates studied. The possible effects of high oil injection rates on flooding phenomena in the furnace bosh were considered. Comparisons show that high oil rates can lead to significant increases in the hanging factor (e.g. 'V 10% at 135 kg oil/thm) owing to increased gas flow rates/thm resulting from the presence of hydrogen.

Ranger Uranium Mine is located within the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory of Australia and surrounded by the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park (Figure 1). The mining operation is currently producing about 1500 tonnes of uranium oxide annually, as well as considerable volumes of waste rock, low grade ore and tailings. The rehabilitation of the project should ensure that the radioactive mill tailings and other contaminants remain contained for at least 200 years, as required by the existing guidelines (Commonwealth of Australia, 1987). The present uranium mining operation is regulated by the Northern Territory Department of Mines and Energy who must refer to the Environmental Requirements when considering regulatory options. Although blasthole deviation is a problem which can seriously affect blasting operations, there is little practical emphasis on controlling this deviation and no practical emphasis on understanding its practical behaviour. The most common way of dealing with it involves tight control over drill set up and surveying hole paths. The surveying might involve simple collar location and inclination measurement to estimate the hole's actual path. At best, some operations routinely survey hole paths after all holes in a stope have been drilled. In addition, although there is an expectation that holes will deviate, there is no planning for this behaviour in order to reduce its impact on the blast. Design decisions are invariably made with the assumption that holes are straight. If and when surveys reveal problems it is possible only to adjust charging and initiation to 'work around them'. In extreme cases the drill might be recalled to fill in gaps. The lack of planning and the lack of understanding are doubtlessly linked.A model is presented that will predict the expected path of a drill hole. By knowing how a selected few holes deviated it is possible to make a good estimate of the deviation of other holes in the same rock mass. After minimal calibration the model can be used to increase the amount of information for a given amount of surveying or the amount of surveying can be reduced while maintaining the same level of knowledge of blasthole deviation. Equally important is the ability to plan for the deviation in future drilling through altering the initial collar angles or drilling from different locations. It is the authors' hope that planning for hole deviation becomes as much a part of the design process as planning for detonator delay scatter and explosive performance variation.

As valuable minerals are more disseminated, there is a need for low-grade ores to be finely ground to liberate these valuable minerals. However, this has a negative impact on ultrafine mineral recovery as conventional separations processes such as gravity separation are no longer effective. Instead, fine particles can be recovered by froth flotation. Various novel reagents have been introduced along with development in flotation cell designs such as Jameson cell and column cells to improve performance and recovery of ultrafine valuables. This study, on the other hand, aims to recover the fines using a combination of commercially available reagents to selectively flocculate the valuables, so they are large enough to be recovered via conventional froth flotation cells. This technique if successful can be implemented in many existing industries that continue to use mechanical flotation cells that require particle sizes to be 50–150 μm for effective recovery (Ralston, 1992; Batterham and Moodie, 2005). Selective flocculation is not widely implemented in industries mainly due to the inability to float the aggregates ones they are formed and gangue entrapment within the aggregates which consequently affects the grade of concentrate recovered (Forbes, 2011). The major goal is to aggregate the minerals and float the aggregates unlike the more common industrial technique such as reverse flotation of hematite, where the aggregates itself is not recovered via flotation.

The characteristics of 'Z' (Back-over run) and 'R' (Reverse) ventilation systems are dis- cussed in relation to their suitability for longwall mining. Experience in European mines has been described as a basis for comparison with Australian conditions. In assessing the merits of each ventilat- ion system, such factors as longwall layout (pillar design, number of headings and gateroad stability), the need for gas drainage and bleed- er systems, as well as the influence of seam dip have been considered relevant. The R system is generally applicable for single and two heading development in seams where gas emission is a less serious problem. In contrast, the lower extraction to development ratio of the Z system (which arises from using three or more heading layouts) is considered more favourable where high gas emission occurs. The Z system provides greater flexibility with respect to the provision of refreshing air at the tailgate end, access of men and materials, installation and retrieval of gas drainage systems and the ability to interchange main- gate and tailgate roadways in cases where roof strata loads are difficult to control, or where cpam in hac an influrnra

Excavation are in progress for the building of tunnels of the waterworks in West Campania (Naples). The works afferent to part II envisage tunnelling through a miocenic clay formation over consolidated by two tunnels whose sections are respectively 50 and 10m2. Tunnel blasting is carried out by mechanical means. An excavator is used in the big tunnel, whereas in the small tunnel a roadheader machine is used for a short tract and a mechanized shield is used over a long stretch. The tunnel feature complex problems regarding stability. This is particularly so for the big tunnel whose face appears unstable. For this reason the clay on the face is sistematically bolted by means of 3-metre and 12-metre bolts. This prevent the use of a TBM for tunnel Excavation.

EQUIPMENT TO BE DISCUSSED It is the intention of this paper to discuss the transporting of large skid mounted equipment and track machines around open cut mines. By large I mean 100 to 350 tonne capacity being trans- ported on minesite lowloaders and the capability of moving loads of 300 to 1200 tonne by other means. It is also possible to move larger loads. The main factor in transporting large loads is eco- nomics and is a balance between the cost of the transporter and the increased production from the equipment being moved. For example it could be possible to shift a 7000 tonne dragline faster than their own means of propulsion, being the "walking feet" method. However for the cost of $10 to $12,000,000.00 or more you can afford to walk the dragline and suffer the production loss. Let us concentrate on the economically realistic. BOSICH FBT MINESITE LOWLOADERS 100 TO 350 TONNE CAPACITY. Why initially consider having such a transporter? Our experience has shown that initial enquiries evolve from mines requiring to move large drills, 50 to 200 tonne weight and large hydraulic excavators or backhoes which are track mounted. The reason for shifting them is to move equipment from a mining face to enable blasting, to remove to the central workshop for repairs, overhauls and routine maintenance, to transport equip- ment from one mine face to another, and for drills, to move from one drilling pattern to the next. The cost in terms of time lost and extra wear on tracked equip- ment easily justifies the cost of the transporter. The tracks on large drills and shovels are not intended for long distance walk- ing. These tracks are designed to move the machines to position for drill holes, or moving around the mine face. Long distance travel, ie generally 1 km or more, results in overheating of track rollers, track drive components and accelerated wear on tracks.

Flow maldistribution in the iron blast furnace has been studied analytically by the use of the vectorial form of the Ergun equation and experimentally via packed columns and a cold model of a blast furnace. Experimental results are presented showing the effect on fluid flow patterns of the following types of nonuniformities in a packed bed: the increased voidage at the wall ("wall effect"), the decreased voidage at the interface between layers of materials with different sizes and shapes, and the differences in resistance to flow of bulk regions of a column with different sizes and shapes. The proposed theory is applied to the calculation of fluid flow patterns for these nonuniformities. Velocity profiles, as calculated from these flow patterns, were found to agree reasonably well with experimental measurements obtained via hot wire anemometry techniques for laboratory scale packed columns. Calculated fluid flow patterns are presented for blast furnace burdens which show how flow patterns are affected by (a) coke segregation and (b) the relative differences in resistance to flow between coke and oxide pellet layers. For the cold model study, calculated flow patterns are presented based on photographs of a given burden distribution. The velocity profiles calculated from these flow patterns were found to agree reasonably well with the velocity profiles measured from the cold Model.

The development of Mount Isa Mines Limited power supply is traced through the history of the mine operations. As would be expected, growth of the power supply system follows closely the increase in mine output, although it will be seen that total kWh. produced per ton milled shows a considerable reduction in later years when the mine output showed a more rapid rate of increase. That this reduction is not more marked is possibly due to the increased community and Shire Council power usage per head of population.INTRODUCTIONThe geographical position of Mount lsa, far from any large regional power supply Authority, dictated the policy that the Company be responsible for the production and suppiy of all power required for the plant operation. The Company also, in November 1937, accepted responsibility for the supply of a part of the power requirements of the township of Mount Isa. The history of power supply to the Mine may be divided into several phases.1. The supply Of lighting and power during the first plant construction period 1929-1931.2. The construction of the first section of the Mines Power Station, comprising Nos. 1 and 2 turbo alternators and boilers.3. The addition of No. 3 turbo alternator and boiler.4. The increasing need for alternative energy sources as well as the less clearly perceived but equally increasing demand for non-fuel minerals has resulted in extensive exploitation of near surface deposits. Many such deposits have depleted reserves and mining corporations are increasingly turning their attention to deposits, with thicker overburden, less competent materials, steeper dips and more complex structure. These deposits pose mine layout, geotechnical and equipment problems as well as the need for large outputs to achieve economies of scale. The paper describes the major problems and operational solutions for such deposits using continuous excavation and transport equipment.

In large companies with mining operations spread over multiple sites, it is essential that consistency between sites is maintained in preparing and classifying resource and reserve estimates. The endorsement by The AusLMM and AMIC of the "Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves" and the subsequent incorporation of reference to the code into the ASX listing rules for mining companies has provided a basis for the consistent classification of resources and reserves. However, compliance with other criteria more or less stringent than the Australasian Code can present some reporting difficulties. Examples include listing requirements for foreign stock exchanges, particular Acts of Parliament that may apply to individual leases, constraints imposed by individual companies on their own leases, and ultimately, reserves for short, medium and long term planning. Confusion can arise when any two or more sets of reserves for the same lease are compared.. To alleviate this confusion, a standardised procedure was developed for the calculation and classification of coal resources and reserves. The procedure which is geostatistically based incorporates a technique called "Irregular Block Kriging" where specific mining blocks are directly kriged. The procedure has enabled those engineers and geologists with only a basic understanding of geostatistics to apply the technique and not feel hampered by some of the complex mathematics which in the past has tended to inhibit and overcomplicate the use of geostatistics. The procedure has resulted in "cleaner" data bases and hence more reliable reserve estimates.

A synergistic solvent extraction (SX) system for nickel and cobalt recovery using Versatic 10 and decyl-4-pyridinecarboxylate was tested with BHP Billiton pilot plant leach solution. Another synergistic SX system for cobalt and zinc recovery was successfully tested using Baja MiningÆs pilot plant leach solutions. Synergistic SX systems have also been developed to separate iron, zinc and copper from nickel and cobalt for Minara Resources and to separate manganese from magnesium and calcium in waste stream for HiTec Energy. The gypsum precipitation problem at the former Bulong operation could have been alleviated using a Versatic 10 and CLX50 synergistic SX system. These synergistic systems have shown high selectivity for target metals over impurity metals and would largely improve SX plant operation. Maintaining a æhealthyÆ organic is very important for efficient plant operation. Careful analysis of plant organic at CSIRO has been used as a tool to pre-empt and/or solve problems in operating circuits. Work performed to assist operators has included assessing plant organic solutions to highlight impurity build-up with time, assessing reagent stability under prescribed operating conditions, correlating organic composition with impurity transfer and crud analysis. An independent estimate has determined that work in this area by CSIRO has provided over $50 M in benefits to the industry.

This paper discusses the considerations for optimum maintenance of critical ore handling infrastructure in order to minimise the cost to the business of maintenance periods. As maintenance periods are a direct interruption to production, time is of the essence and careful management of shutdown periods is essential. The ore pass systems currently in use at Xstrata Copper û Mount Isa Copper Operations are up to 30 years old and have had significant wear over the years. The maintenance of these passes and their brows and chutes in a production situation is a challenge as it can potentially expose personnel to high risk situations in addition to the production interruptions. Some alternatives for mitigating the risk of working in ore passes including plugging and ballooning are described. Criteria are included for selecting a method for the safe entry into a given ore pass. Experience in adapting the method of ore pass plugs and some lessons learnt in the process are also discussed.

Checking the quality of a blast may be considered as subjective. Checking this quality will require measuring objective parameters. One of them is the resulting fragmentation of the blasted product. Numerous fragmentation æmeasuringÆ systems have been developed and marketed, based on image-processing. This presentation of FragScan will illustrate advantages and difficulties when using such a system. FragScan is essentially defending a policy of large and representative sampling. The purpose is to show how fragmentation is discriminating both productivity and profit of quarry operations on a blast-by blast basis. The next step will then be to ædriveÆ the blasting process to reach a æbetterÆ fragmentation. Other applications require the fragmentation as an essential result: this is the case for large boulders used in structure-reinforcement. Several case-studies have shown that FragScan can be used for quality-control, checking size-distribution of the product according to the requirements of the end-user. Only clear thinking about the precise use of such a æmeasurementÆ will further the success of this task.

Published information on technical and market developments in the uses of zinc tends to dwell very largely on two groups of uses of zinc - zinc coatings (mainly galvanising) and zinc casting alloys. These two groups account for two-thirds of primary zinc consumption. However, if total zinc consumption is taken into consideration, coatings and casting account for a little over half the total. Either way, the health - or otherwise - of these 'other' uses of zinc can have a substantial effect on the industry as a whole. The aim of this paper is to put the whole market picture for zinc into better focus, concentrating on the factors which can affect consumption in the 'other half' of zinc's markets: ò brass - the third most important market for zinc at around one million tonnes - responds to changes in the economic cycle. It has seen substantial changes in the balance between different forms of semi products, and, in Europe at least, some real market gains; ò zinc sheet - one of the original uses of zinc in Europe - has grown substantially in some countries, but remains almost unknown elsewhere; and ò zinc pigments and compounds are so numerous that - barring the substitution of zinc oxide in rubber - major overall changes in the market are unlikely. The paper examines these markets and assesses their potential and implications for zinc markets as a whole.

Appin Colliery mines the Bulli Seam with a gas composition of 98.5% methane and 1.5% carbon dioxide. Relaxation of the strata generally occurs to below the base of the Wongawilli Seam, some 40 m below the Bulli Seam, and approxim- ately 125 m above the Bulli Seam, for longwall face widths of 135 m or more. Previous exper- ience showed that when longwall faces were mined for a distance approximately equal to the face width, the mine ventilation could not provide sufficient dilution due to methane emissions from the underlying measures. Postdraining downholes were drilled to intersect the Wongawilli Seam below the operat- ng longwall. These holes were connected to an underground to surface gas range and various suction levels were applied to improve gas drainage. The resulting gas flow rates and purity from all the downholes were regularly monitored and peak flows in some holes exceeded 160 1/sec. The surface plant drained almost 20 million m3 of gas for the period July 1981 to January 1982 at an average methane purity of approximately 70%. Distinct patterns emerged for different downholes from curves illustrat- ing their variations in flow rate with distance subsequent to passage of the longwall face. Kamhalda is located within the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia, specifically in the Norseman - Wiluna greenstone belt. Numerous nickel sulphide deposits have been mined at Kambalda with I I mines currently operating. For several years, a program of in-mine geophysics has been operating at Kambalda, with downhole electromagnetics (UHEM) one of the key techniques used. Three case studies illustrating the uses of UHEM in mines are presented here. In the first example, the Helmut South deposit was discovered as the result of an extensional exploration program. The first drill hole in the program intersected ore width and grade mineralisation at around 760 in depth. Two subsequent holes intersected subgrade mineralisation. DHEM surveys were completed in each of these three holes, with anomalies recorded indicating that a large conductor was located directly south of the first hole. The next hole intersected this target, for an intersection of 21.6 in at 3.5 per cent Ni. DHEM continued to play a role as the exploration program proceeded, providing drill hole targeting based on anomalous responses recorded in each drill hole. In the second example from Carnilya Hill, old drill holes were surveyed with DHEM in order to search a large section of prospective contact for massive ore pods. An off-hole anomaly was detected and subsequent mining discovered a small but high-grade pod of ore which was extracted for a considerable profit. Carnilya Hill has limited reserves and discoveries such as this, assist in keeping the mine operating. In the third example from Victor, a program of drilling intersected thin ore profiles in an interpreted flanking position. Without massive ore close by, these intersections probably do not constitute economic mineralisation. DHEM surveys of three holes did not detect any conductors. The area is now regarded as sterilised of significant massive ore and exploration efforts and dollars can be focused in other areas. These three examples demonstrate the type of successes that can he achieved through the use of DHEM.
