The history of the rail and mining industry in Queensland over the past century is inseparable. Indeed it was mining that led to the construction of the line west from Townsville and that shaped its current alignment. The discovery of gold at Charters Towers started construction of the Great Northern Railway west from Townsville in 1879, with completion to Charters Towers in 1882. The line was extended to Hughenden in 1887 and to Cloncurry in 1907 - driven by copper mines both to the south west and the north west of Cloncurry. The mining industryÆs association with funding the construction of rail lines to service their individual mines began in this area when the Hampden and Mount Elliot mine companies agreed to pay 50 per cent of the cost of the line from Cloncurry. The line to Selwyn was completed in 1910. Copper mining saw the construction of many other rail lines in the Cloncurry area in the 1910 - 20 period before copper prices slumped. Included in these lines were the Malbon to Duchess line and the line to Kajabbi and beyond.

The South Australian mining regulatory framework has adopted a performance based approach to the management of risk. This approach has been in place in South Australia for more than 10 years and is increasingly being implemented in mining jurisdictions in Australia and around the world. Performance based regulation focuses on setting appropriate environmental outcomes to be achieved based on an assessment of the potential impacts associated with the development, operation and closure of mining projects. Measurable compliance criteria, including completion criteria, are set to demonstrate achievement of the outcomes. It is the responsibility of the proponent to propose designs and strategies that will achieve the regulated environmental outcomes and to demonstrate the implementation of their designs and strategies will achieve the outcomes into the future. Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs) are significant elements of many major mines and each is unique with site specific factors such a materials to be stored, design, size, location, climate, sensitive receptors, operating history of the facility (i.e. changes to design), site culture and company capability amongst a range of other factors. Consequently a fit-for purpose approach is a key principle of best practice regulation of tailings management as it takes the site specific factors into account in setting appropriate outcomes for mitigating the identified impacts associated with a proposed development. Achievement of those outcomes through fit-for purpose, well designed management strategies would ensure safe, stable and economic storage of tailings in a manner that complies with all legislative requirements and presents negligible public health and safety risks. Tailings storage must also have acceptably low social and environmental impacts, both on and off site, during operation and indefinitely post closure. Achievement of environmental outcomes during operations and at mine completion can then be demonstrated to the regulator and community through public reporting of compliance with measurement criteria which establish the appropriate level of impact for each individual operation. A number of new mining proposals including tailings storage facilities (TSF) have recently been assessed and approved in South Australia. The location, size, design, sensitive receptors, public interest and therefore risk profiles of these TSF’s have varied substantially between these new mining proposals. These considerations were reflected in the assessment of the TSFs and the resulting mining lease conditions of approval including the environmental outcomes to be achieved over the life of the facilities. At Pasminco Mining's South concentrator. which was commissioned in 1952. an expansion. modernisation and efficiency improvement program commenced in 1986 with a coarse ore stockpile and grinding circuit expansion. the replacement of small flotation cells and the upgrading of reagent mixing and metering equipment. The program continued with the installation of a TDC 3000 based process control system (1988) and concentrate thickeners (1990). By mid-1991 a further grinding expansion and the installation of zinc flotation feed regrind ball mills and zinc recleaner column cells will be complete. leaving the use of ceramic disc fillers and development of process control strategies as probably the remaining major avenues for improved process efficiency at present.

For a multitude of years fine iron ore, -1 mm, across the world has been deposited as discard material in tailings facilities. This contributes to environmental problems, decreases plant yield and increases the cost of processing. Fine iron ore recovery processes are often deemed unfeasible or uneconomical, due to the complexity of the reclamation thereof in comparison with high-grade ores. However, recent advances in the recovery of fine iron ore using the Optima Classifier® has shown great promise. The Optima Classifier® is a new hindered settling separator that makes use of an upward current of water for density separation. It’s unique design combines three different separating zones for increased efficiency and recovery. In this study the potential of the Optima Classifier® to produce a +63 per cent Fe concentrate from -1 mm feed material was evaluated from a standalone and process perspective. It was found that a +63 per cent Fe product can be produced from a single stage, using the Optima Classifier®. Fine iron ore feed with an average head grade of 50 per cent Fe was upgraded to average concentrate grades of 63.2 per cent Fe. Displaying upgrade ratios of up to 1.26 in a single stage. A three-stage, rougher, cleaner and scavenger system did however show the best performance with recoveries of up to 70 per cent, yielding 56 per cent of a 63 per cent Fe product. Furthermore, the dewatering of the product and tailings was evaluated using the UltraG ultra-fine dewatering screen ensuring dry, stackable material. The tailings could be used in codisposal, while loads on thickeners and filter presses are significantly reduced. The high throughput of the Optima Classifier® ensures a small plant footprint, minimal civil and structural requirements and low operating utility consumption such as electricity, minimising the carbon footprint of a fines beneficiation plant. The Optima Classifier® in combination with the UltraG dewatering technology has provided a platform for economical recovery of fine iron ore, both current arising and historical. Providing opportunity to lower plant operating costs, reduce environmental liability of tailings facilities and increasing immediate process water recovery

The Doc Run Company and its predecessors have been mining for over 130 years utilising the room and pillar mining method. This method has left approximately 20 per cent of the orebody in the remaining pillars. The original design and planning for the mines did not include extensive pillar extraction. This paper summarises the introduction of the pillar extraction and backfill techniques which have been implemented since 1991. These techniques include the use of low cost fill walls up to 20 in in height and the use of stinger trucks for topping off the fill. In conjunction with these accomplishments, much experience and confidence has been gained in the use of numerical modelling as a method of predicting pillar stability as the mining of pillars progresses. These advances have led to pillar extraction hecoming a major portion of the overall production and have added to the mine life of Doe Run's six operating mines.

It is understood that rocks do not instantaneously transport along a grinding mill and are consequently not perfectly mixed, but this is conveniently overlooked in mill modelling. A lack of understanding of the transport phenomenon and the difficulty of modelling realistic transport in a complex tumbling system, contribute to this. Visual observation of segregation in AG and SAG mills and measured lag time of mill response to changes in feed provide evidence of the influence of axial transport within mills. Incorporating this lag in dynamic models should underpin dynamic simulation of milling circuits for design and for model-based control. Limitations and errors in predicting the influence of increased power via mill length versus diameter, inability to predict pebble production, and a lack of the differential in residence time across rock sizes and competences, all contribute to inadequate design prediction that can be especially acute for large Autogenous mills. Examples of dramatically under – and overloaded pebble regrind circuits and the inability to predict pebble load in AG milling discouraging the application of this energy-efficient option, point to the need for predictive modelling of breakage by competence linked to transport through and out of mills. Incorporating progress in granular flow and mixing, coupled to computational advances enable models to be based on complex breakage and transport models at high spatial resolution. This allows mechanistic models to simulate thousands of times faster than real time, opening the door to more accurate mill design, including dynamics in process simulation and to live simulation for process control – all with advanced mechanistic models. The value of grasping this opportunity is not easily refuted.

In steelmaking processes, it is known that P2O5 in dephosphorisation slags often exists in solid solutions between Ca2SiO4 and Ca3P2O8, <C2S-C3P>SS, and thus the solid solutions play an important role in the dephosphorisation reaction. Hence, the knowledge of thermochemical properties, ie phase relations and activities of components, in slags containing <C2S-C3P>SS are necessary for the effective removal of phosphorus from hot metal. In this study, the P2O5 activities in <C2S-C3P>SS were measured through the gas equilibrium method. In the present experiment, oxide samples were equilibrated with Cu-P liquid alloys at 1573 K under a stream of Ar + H2 + H2O or Ar + H2 + CO2 gas mixture in which oxygen potential was fixed and then equilibrium phosphorus concentrations in the Cu-P alloys, [mass%P]Cu, were analysed with ICP-OES.

The McArthur River (HYC) deposit, located in the Northern Territory of Australia, was discovered by Mt Isa Mines Limited geologists in 1955. It is one of the largest sedimentary stratiform zinc-lead-silver deposits known. Previous attempts to exploit the deposit have been thwarted by its geographical location, the capital expenditure required to establish an operation and the fine-grained nature of the mineralisation. The steeply dipping western margin of the deposit is covered by up to 25 m of overburden, and lies beneath the McArthur River and its flood plain. Dips are eastward, with the eastern edge of the deposit at a depth of about 400 m below the surface. The average thickness of the deposit is 55 m, and it covers an area of about 1.8 by 1.3 km. Seven stratiform orebodies are interbedded with sedimentary breccia, tuff and poorly mineralised siltstone. Mineralisation consists of finely intergrown sphalerite and galena, hosted by pyritic siltstone of the middle Proterozoic McArthur Group. Selective underground mining of the lower orebodies will extract more than one million tonnes of ore per annum. The dip of the mineralisation demands that mining will be by way of apparent dip room and pillar. Declines will provide access and haulage, and wherever possible development will be in ore. Initially, haulage will be by trackless diesel powered trucks, but these will be replaced by a conveyer system. A single zinc-lead-silver concentrate will be produced from a simple flowsheet. This flowsheet has been developed in the laboratory and demonstrated during an extensive pilot plant campaign. A single stage SAG mill will be utilised to grind the ore down to a P80 = 45 ltm (80 per cent of particles passing 45 ¦rn. The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) is a professional society for all those associated with the activities of the mineral industry. Differences of opinion exist within the membership of the AusIMM on the role it should play in the future as a professional society in a changing industry and world environment. This same dilemma is concerning other professional societies of which the author is a member. Some of the activities and priorities of the AusIMM are reviewed in order to clarify a frequently expressed opinion that it identifies with and supports industry at the expense of representing the interests of its individual members. By definition and by action this is certainly not the case and it is concluded that all activities whether seen to be industry or member orientated serve to benefit both. The AusIMM plays a most important role in integrating and promoting the interests of all sections of the mineral industry whether corporate or individual and the Presidential activities in education this year provide an excellent example of this.

All mines face water management challenges. Adopting leading practice water management strategies can help reduce both operational and strategic risks. While many of the water issues faced by underground mines are the same as other operations, underground mining presents some unique water management challenges. In this paper we review trends in underground mining, water use and associated water issues. We then compile a structured set of strategic and operational risks that are pertinent to underground operations. The causes, threats, opportunities and measures for controlling or mitigating the risks are summarised. The risk compilation could provide an addendum for underground operations to the Australian governments leading practice water management handbook.

It&apos;s the most rugged part of Tasmania and our island is one of the most rugged parts of Australia, so that speaks for itself. A hostile land of razorback mountains, deep ravines, dangerous rivers, almost impenetrable rainforests and a climate that can change from mild to freezing in a matter of hours.

Breakwater Resources Ltd is a Canadian base metals producer with Cu-Pb-Zn operations in Canada, Honduras, and Chile. Two of its operations contain economical gold levels which are recovered in both gravity and flotation concentrates. The gold payable terms in zinc concentrate are poor when compared to gold concentrates or copper concentrates and various flow sheets have been evaluated by Breakwater staff to maximise gold reporting in higher value products. The Myra Falls mine in British Columbia recovers coarse gold in the grinding circuit, part of which is upgraded and sold as a gravity-gold concentrate with the balance being directed to the copper concentrate. A sampling survey showed that there was potential gravity-recoverable gold in the copper regrind circuit. Installing a gravity concentrator in the copper regrind circuit increased the gold grade and recovery in the higher revenue copper concentrate and reduced the quantity reporting to the less well paid zinc concentrate. The El Toqui Mine in southern Chile has distinct high-and low-gold orebodies which are campaigned separately through the flotation plant. The high gold zone yields both a gravity concentrate and an unusual gold flotation concentrate. The gravity concentrate undergoes intensive cyanidation and electrowinning on-site to produce dore, while the fl otation concentrate is sold to gold producers. The zinc concentrate contains signifi cant gold values. The paper describes efforts over the past few years to improve gold returns at Breakwater&apos;s operations and highlights the different approaches dictated by the mineralogy of the gold occurrences at these two operations.

A great range of contacting equipment is used in solvent extraction. However, a tower filled with a regular packing offers many advantages in the direct extraction from slurries. A study was made of the flow of a dense slurry through a packed tower in which the continuous phase was kerosene. The grid type packing, which was preferentially wetted by the slurry, had slats inclined at an angle of 30¦, to the horizontal. On the sur- face of the slats there were uniformly spaced longitudinal indentat- ions. These were of a height slightly less than the film thickness and divided the slurry discharging from the bottom of the slats into a number of uniform streams. When slurry entered the tower it was distributed by means of a troughs and weirs type of distributor. Because of the relatively high slurry velocities that occur at the entry region, it was necess- ary to have the distributor and the first two grids above the solvent level. The interface at the bottom of the tower was located at the mid-point of the bottom grid, so that the slurry entered the interface as a continuous film across the full width of the slats. Using the above system, stable flow with low entrainment was achieved at slurry flow rates of 3.4 mis/cm/sec. This would be equivalent to a flow rate of 177 gallons per minute through a tower of cross-section 4 ft 4 in. by 4 ft 10 in., or 1200 tons per day of solids of specific gravity 2.6 when the pulp density was 65 per cent. Previous tests indicated that a total tower height of about 30 ft would be required for a recovery of better than 99 per cent.

In this study, a systematic examination of the scale and variety of micro-structures in coal using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) has been carried out, using coal samples of differing stages of coalification from the Bowen Basin and New Zealand. SEM provides detail of various micro-structural features and shows that a variety of micron-sized fractures and cavities are present in coals. These are differentiated into three pore types: fracture porosity, phyteral porosity and matrix porosity. Fracture porosity is generally associated with bright coals (although it has been shown that micro-fractures are present in maceral fragments from the dull coal layers). Characteristically the macro- and micro- fractures form a continuous structural fabric through the bright coal layers and thus make a significant contribution to overall permeability. The macro- and micro-fractures appear to have been formed during the process of coalification rather than being formed due to shrinkage during methane extraction, as most of them are infilled with secondary minerals. In contrast, phyteral and matrix porosity is associated with the dull coal layers that are composed of plant fragments or a heterogeneous mixture of macerals. Like the macro- and micro-fractures, the continuity of the observed cavities suggest that these too are a significant contribution to overall permeability, and therefore play a major role in the transmissibility of methane at a level between diffusion at the micropore level and laminar flow at the macro-fracture level. Due to different spacing, orientation and persistence of individual fractures and cavities, the rate of methane transmissibility through a coalseam will vary according to coal rank, coal type and the organic precursors from which the coal was derived. This is important as a knowledge of the micro-structure system and its relationship to coal type and coal rank, plays an important consideration in: a) gas drainage modelling, b) enhancing permeability by inducing fractures and c) predicting the occurrence of outbursts.

During the development of a mining project, samples are taken for metallurgical tests. The sample can be a composite sample made of material coming from a selection of various drilling products or a sample coming from a mining test. This sample can represent several tonnes of material which are analysed and split to be used in various tests.In the current case, a composite sample is dedicated to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) pilot plant tests. The property of interest is then the size distribution of the material. The sample is mixed and a subsample is taken to measure the size distribution which is considered as the feed size distribution. Then the remaining material of the sample is divided in several subsamples for batch grinding tests at different operating conditions. The product of each grinding test is then analysed to measure its size distribution.The grinding performances are analysed at the light of the measured size distributions for feed and product. But what is the accuracy of the measurement of these size distributions? What is the variability of the feed knowing each feed is just a subsample of the initial sample?The Pierre Gy theory of sampling answers these questions.The current paper presents, through a real example, the calculation of the measurement error of the size distributions and the variability of the feed between the different tests. "Approximately 32 per cent of the worldÆs total gold production has come from greenstone belts (Frimmel, 2008). In these regions numerous small to large, quartz vein-associated gold deposits are hosted in metamorphic rocks ranging from lower greenschist to granulite facies. Historical exploration has focused its efforts on rocks of greenschist to lower amphibolite facies because these seem to contain the most deposits. Consequently, these regions are now reaching mature brownfield status, particularly in developed nations, and finding new deposits is becoming progressively more difficult. In comparison, regions of similar tectonic setting, but instead containing high-grade metamorphic rocks of mid-amphibolite to granulite facies, have received little attention because the first explorers found fewer deposits there.However, these regions certainly do contain some very significant gold deposits such as Hemlo in Canada (~684 t Au), Renco in Zimbabwe (~31 t Au mined since 1980), the very profitable Challenger deposit in South Australia (~36 t Au; recovered + reserve + resource), and the most recently discovered Tropicana deposit in Western Australia (~182 t Au; reserve + resource). High-grade metamorphic terrains therefore offer explorationists an excellent opportunity to move onto relatively green fields within developed nations, which carry less risk associated with development. However, explorationists have comparatively little knowledge of the geological controls on gold distribution in high-grade terranes because: industry experience lies in traditional lode-style gold deposits these gold deposits are geologically more complex there has simply been minimal research conducted on these deposits as a holistic group.Furthermore, research conducted in the last five years has shown us that the previous widely accepted model for gold genesis in these terranes, the crustal continuum model, is incorrect. Here, I discuss features from several gold deposits hosted in high-grade metamorphic rocks and use these to define two categories for explorationists to consider: deposits that formed prior to peak metamorphism (metamorphosed gold deposits) deposits that formed well after peak metamorphism (post-metamorphic gold deposits). There are two major aspects to wall control blasting – the potential for any blasthole to cause wall damage and the potential for a delayed sequence of blastholes to cause damage. The damage potential of individual blastholes is governed by standoff distance and charge weight. However, for locations sufficiently close to a highwall, dynamic finite element models and field measurements show that there is also a critical nature to those blastholes very close to the wall, over and above standoff distance. At many mine sites, the charge weight/standoff-distance is set by trial and error. Thus, a significant aspect of the present work is the determination of dynamic stress radiating from a blasthole. Unfortunately, the modelling and measurement of this dynamic stress is still faced with many difficulties. Typical models have questionable aspects, which casts serious doubt over their predictions, and it is shown that the Hustrulid Bar experimental technique does not correctly account for stress wave attenuation in extended media. In an attempt to solve the dynamic stress problem, the present work describes a model based on an exact solution under the assumption of viscoelastic material. The model takes full account of the rock mass elastic/viscoelastic properties, the explosive type, geometry and primer location and predicts a dynamic stress for direct comparison with the unconfined compressive strength of the local rock mass. This model predicts the standoff distance required to avoid damage due to a single blasthole. The behaviour of a delayed sequence of blastholes is analysed using an upgraded waveform superposition model, covering a range of initiation delay combinations, which predicts the peak particle motion (PPM) induced in the wall for each combination. This approach shows that there is no need to fire dedicated trim shots close to walls; all that is required is a carefully modified production shot. The mechanism of vibration screening is discussed, and its use in a superposition model highlights the potential of reverse firing (shield blasting) to reduce wall PPM. A conceptual model is also introduced to give a further insight to vibration screening and damage (via ground heave). This model predicts that a centre-lift blast will have a central heave profile and that a reverse-fired shot will produce a smaller power trough than that produced by a standard shot. It is demonstrated that the mechanism of presplit formation is not well understood; nevertheless, experimental evidence shows that presplits can be an effective method for reducing wall vibrations.CITATION:Blair, D P, 2015. The Hishikari gold deposit, discovered by the Metal Mining Agency of Japan, has become a giant class epithermal gold deposit with the highest grade of gold yet recorded in the world through detailed exploration and development by the Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. The exploration strategy involved a regional approach combining geological and gravity surveys over a 900 km2 area which had historically produced over 120 t of gold. These surveys were carried out to grasp the common geologic features of epithermal gold deposits in the survey area. A genetic model for epithermal gold deposits in the area under regional survey was also considered based on detailed research of the Kushikino epithermal gold deposit which was in operation at that time. This model was applied to the targeted areas, and important relationships between mineralization, host lithology, intensive propylitic alteration and gravity highs became apparent. The Hishikari block was selected in this way and bonanza gold was discovered during drilling. Since the development of the Hishikari mine, information useful for further exploration for the same type of deposit has been accumulated.

The Mt Todd Gold Project is located 42 km northwest of the township of Katherine within the Northern Territory of Australia. It is situated in the southeastern portion of the Pine Creek Geosyncline. The Batman gold deposit, the largest of several deposits at Mt Todd, hosts an identified mineral resource of 92.9 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t) as at 31 December 1993. Host rocks at Batman are assigned to the Early Proterozoic Burrell Creek Formation, comprising greywacke and siltstone interbedded with shale. Gold mineralisation is associated with a very broad zone of sheeted and stockwork quartz-sulphide veins that occupy a corridor of intense brittle fracture and faulting. A conceptual model of formation involves the dilation of joints and micro-faults within overlying sediments during sinistral movement along a basement shear zone. Synchronous granite intrusion generated convective circulation of crustal fluids through the sedimentary pile resulting in the formation of auriferous quartz veins within favourable structures. The Batman zone of mineralisation is not directly related to fold structures which typify several other major gold deposits within the Pine Creek Geosyncline.
