In the iron ore industry significant emphasis is placed throughout the mining process on meeting chemical composition specifications for the export of fine ores, however, little has been published on the implications of ore chemical composition for iron ore sinter and pellet product quality. The ore bulk composition, together with the nature of the minerals in the fine ore both play a critical role in determining the type of high temperature bonding phases that form during sintering and pelletising. This paper uses the experimental determination of phase relations in model sinter and pellet systems such as Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2 (FCS) and Fe2O3-Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 (FACS) to examine the links between iron ore chemical composition and the temperatures used during sintering and pellet firing. The phase relations help to establish the critical thermal and compositional parameters that control the bonding phase chemistry which in turn influences the physical characteristics of the sinter or pellet matrix. The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of MgCO3 was investigated using isothermal experiments performed in a thermogravimetric analyzer under a nitrogen atmosphere at 380¦, 400¦, 450¦ and 480¦C. The weight loss data as a function of time were modified to give the fraction that reacted (ß) and the rate of reaction (dß/dt) vs. time (t). Kinetic analysis of the experimental results, using three different methods, showed that diffusion predominates the MgCO3 decomposition over the investigated temperature range, with the data being best fitted by JanderÆs equation ([1−(1−ß)1/3]2=kt). The activation energy was estimated by Arrhenius plots using both the initial reaction rates and rate constants from fitting the above equation. The values estimated were 27.1 and 171.4 kJ/mol respectively.

The design of primary sample cutters for high-capacity conveyors is critical to achieving a correct sample, both in collecting the sample and ensuring smooth sample discharge flow. Modelling usually occurs at the design stage and requires extensive experience to achieve the correct result. However, it is difficult to confirm the effectiveness of the cutter design until after installation. Even with high-speed video, confirmation of complete sample capture is difficult, especially if the material characteristics change over time. Recent investigation using discrete element method (DEM) simulation to model the flow of the ore into the cutter and observe how it interacts with the cutter has revealed some interesting design requirements not observed in the past. By including DEM modelling, the correct design and optimisation of the cutter can be more accurately determined prior to commissioning.CITATION:Hidding, M and Shaw, R, 2017. This paper aims to summarise the discovery of the QTS Central resource, a previously unidentified +1 Mt inferred resource that lies between two major CSA resource systems.The 1.7 Mt at 5.76 per cent Cu, QTS Central ore system represents 1/6th of the CSA mineral resource and was discovered in 2014 based on the accumulation of historic exploration records dating back to 1989.The CSA deposit consists of five ore systems hosted within turbidite-derived siltstones (CSA Siltstone) and lesser sandstones (five per cent) of the Devonian Amphitheatre Group. The host sediments strike approximately north–south with a steep westerly dip and exhibit a well-developed east dipping cleavage. Most CSA mineralisation is hosted within dilation zones at the intersection of cross-cutting structures and is interpreted as epigenetic in origin.Alteration and weak mineralisation, up plunge to the reported QTS Central mineral resource, was initially detected in 1990 during a downhole electromagnetic conductivity (EM) study, where one hole indicated an off-hole conductor, later tested with four diamond holes. One of these diamond holes intersected 3 m at 7.5 per cent Cu at 200 m. Development of the 9070 Subway drive in 2005/2006, linked the QTS North and QTS South workings and intersected structures interpreted to host QTS Central mineralisation. Subsequent drilling proximal to the 9070 Subway in 2007 identified an up plunge extension to the QTS Central zone (UDD07152: 1.8 m at 6.3 per cent Cu from 10.7 m). Work on QTS Central was largely forgotten until 2012 when the mining of a 450 m infrastructure drive provided a platform to test the anomalous grades. In December 2013, drill hole UDD13055A intersected 20.9 m at 7.2 per cent Cu from 378 m. By the end of 2014, the QTS Central inferred resource was 1.0 Mt at 6 per cent Cu and 18 g/t Ag (Hosken and Apaza, 2014). Late in 2016, further infill drilling occurred from two fronts to increase confidence in the QTS Central resource. The results of this drilling are expected late in 2017.The current interpretation indicates the QTS Central system consists of two main lenses hosted within closely bedded sandstones and siltstones. The sandstone in general is not mineralised, being heavily silicified, while the siltstone is mineralised and chloritised. The main mineralised lens is 75–200 m along strike and 450 m high. Massive sulfide feeder structures lie at the core of the two main lenses, although the characteristics of the QTS Central system tend toward the mineralisation being more chlorite-rich than in QTS North and QTS South.CITATION:Apaza, E and Neumayr, R, 2017. Geopolymerisation is a new technology that processes and transforms aluminosilicate minerals into mechanically strong and chemically stable products. In this investigation, minerals such as fly ash and kaolinite were used as the solid raw materials for geopolymerisation. Inorganic salts were added to the geopolymeric pastes to simulate ionic contamination during processing for building and construction applications. The resultant products were examined and characterised physically. It was found that the early strength development of geopolymeric pastes could be changed according to the nature as well as the extent of the contamination. At a small dosage, the effect of the contamination on the early geopolymeric system depended heavily on the nature of the artificial surfaces that were created in the geopolymeric solution through the addition of the chemical additives. For example, the samples containing MgCl2 and Mg(NO3)2 had shown the same yield stress developments due to the similar surfaces that were formed. The cations of these salts were expected to hydrolyse and form magnesium hydroxide precipitates immediately after the addition to the early geopolymeric systems. The calcium cations of CaCl2 also precipitated upon addition, but the nature of the surfaces of these hydroxides was quite different to those of the magnesium hydroxides and gave rise to different yield stress development. The samples that contained the insoluble salts (in water) demonstrated different yield stress development when compared to each other because of the different nature of the additive surfaces that were exposed to the geopolymeric solution. These results suggested that heterogeneous nucleation could be responsible for the change of the rheological behaviour upon inorganic salt addition. When the extent of the ionic contamination was large, the anions released from the insoluble salts (in water) changed the nature as well as the concentration of the geopolymeric solution and the setting processes were retarded. Oxides, in general, behaved very differently from other salts, indicating the uniqueness of the oxygen anions in a system rich in hydroxyl and silicate anions. The inorganic salt contamination in geopolymers did not show any significant signs of structural change according to the XRD diffractograms collected. The seven-day compressive strength was not lowered by the inorganic salt contamination and it could sometimes be beneficial to the product performance, for example, an increase of 20 MPa was induced by the addition of calcium oxide. Inorganic salts as chemical additives have demonstrated the potential to modify setting times of geopolymers without sacrificing much of the productsÆ strength and integrity.

The REFLUX Classifier is used to perform particle separations on the basis of density utilising a set of parallel inclined channels positioned above a vertical fluidised section. In continuous mode, feed enters part way up the vertical section, while fluidisation water is introduced from below. Lower density particles are conveyed upwards and collected in an overflow stream, while high density particles segregate onto the inclined surfaces, settle to the base of the system and empty via an underflow stream. Pressure transducers are used to measure the suspension density in the vertical section. This suspension density is maintained by a pneumatically controlled underflow valve to maintain a target suspension density or ‘set point’.Previously, Galvin et al (2010) demonstrated the significant improvement achieved via a new laminar-shear separation mechanism, achieved by utilising closely spaced inclined channels in the REFLUX Classifier. For the separation of low-density coal particles from mineral matter, a channel spacing of 6 mm proved effective; however, for the separation of gangue minerals from much higher density minerals such as iron ore, the shear-induced lift needs to be even higher. In this paper, we examine the influence of two different channel widths on the continuous processing of an industrial iron ore feed in the REFLUX Classifier. It was found that when moving from 6.0 mm to 3.0 mm channels, the ability of the system to reject coarser gangue material and retain finer high density material across a particle size range from 0.125 to 1.0 mm was increased, resulting in a higher grade product.CITATION:Hunter, D M, Zhou, J, Iveson, S M and Galvin, K P, 2017. Smarter Gravity Separation Using the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig With relatively coarse grained and easy-to-process ore sources rapidly dwindling, smarter techniques are becoming more necessary for the continued success of mineral processing operations, while increasing environmental pressures also require more environmentally friendly solutions. Gravity concentration has long been employed to pre-concentrate minerals using water, reducing or eliminating the need for less environmentally friendly processing techniques such as flotation. Conventional gravity recovery devices however, operate in a 1 g environment with limited efficiency in the separation of fine particles of heavy and gangue minerals. More recently developed centrifugal concentrators operate in a multi-g environment and enable finer heavy minerals to be recovered, but also exhibit limited separation efficiency due to the separations being based on solid particle mass differentials. Further enhancement of gravity separation has been achieved using the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig (KCJ), which also operates in a multi-g environment, but separates minerals on the basis of specific gravity differentials, using 'ragging' media and a pulsation mechanism, which maximises the effect of differential particle accelerations. This enables the efficient separation/recovery of minerals down to a particle size of ~6 ¦m and/or separation of minerals with a low specific gravity differential. This paper presents details on the principals of operation of the KCJ, recent improvements in the technology and recent developments in modular KCJ plants, as well as some KCJ application areas, which offer smarter, environmentally friendly processing opportunities for the mineral processing industry.

Telfer Gold Mine combines a world-class gold and copper resource and longevity of operation as a major gold and copper producer. Telfer Gold Mine has undergone a series of transformations since mining commenced as a high-grade narrow-vein oxide open pit operation in 1977. In 1986, the open pit operation converted from a narrow-vein, high-grade operation, to a low-grade high-volume oxide mining operation utilising dump leach processing technology. Mechanised underground mining of the high-grade narrow-veins commenced in 1990. Total recovered gold production between 1977 to 1999 has totalled 5.7 million ounces. The Telfer Extension Project consists of two pre-feasibility studies, the Surface Extension Project (SEP) and the I-Series Project (ISP). The combined studies represent one of the more significant resource evaluations undertaken in the gold industry in recent times. Geological activities for the SEP pre-feasibility study have included the drill definition of a large low-grade resource within an area of 25 km2 . The surface drilling program has completed 15 000 metres of HQ3 diamond drilling and over 30 000 metres of RC between last quarter of 1998 and late-1999. The ISP pre-feasibility study is currently evaluating the resource potential of both a high-grade low-volume and a lower grade bulk mining scenario, 800 m to 1200 m below the surface of Main Dome. 15 000 metres of underground diamond drilling have been completed between last quarter of 1998 and August 1999 as part of this study. Systems and cultures have been developed to maximise safety, monitor the quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) on all aspects of the operation, and minimise impact on the environment. All data are stored in database systems, specifically designed for Telfer operations. 3D geostatistical resource estimation using ordinary kriging has been carried out for over 220 geological domains within the 25 km3 of mineralised system. Non-linear geostatistical techniques are being investigated as part of the pre-feasibility study.

Recent exploration has identified the presence of detrital iron deposits (DIDs) associated with banded iron formation (BIF) units in the north-west of the Congo Craton, Gabon. The regional geology comprises a complex of granitoids and gneisses assigned to the Archaean Chaillu Complex, within which older slivers of lower amphibolite-grade greenstones are preserved including muscovite-biotite-garnet-bearing felsic schist, amphibolite and BIF. These units are typically overlain by several metres of residuum comprising colluvium, eluvium and duricrust. The residuum is overlain by a regionally extensive loess cover from 2 m to 10 m thick.The DIDs occur within the weathered residuum as mostly unconsolidated gravels with lesser canga (CAN) duricrust draped over deeply weathered hematite. Head grades are in the range of 45 to 52 per cent Fe. Fresh BIF, located from 30 to 50 m below surface, is comprised of magnetite-quartz±amphibole. The detrital iron gravels are comprised of rod- and plate-shaped clasts of hematite (martite)-maghemite-goethite composition, in a ferruginous sand to clay-sized matrix. The DID form ridges and plateaus that coincide with magnetic highs defined using high-resolution ground magnetic surveys.The field relations and petrography indicate that the detrital iron accumulations are the result of weathering (including enrichment) and erosion of primary BIF. This includes removal of quartz, further oxidation and re-cementation of BIF to form ferruginous caprock. This cap and the in situ oxidised BIF were subsequently disaggregated and liberated, and further weathered to form the detrital iron accumulations.Metallurgical test work on bulk detrital iron samples has shown this material can be upgraded to lump and fines iron ore products with grades of 62 to 65 per cent Fe using simple scrubbing and wet screening, followed by dense media separation of the -1 mm fraction, with overall mass yields from 75 to 85 per cent. Maintaining high carbon activity is vital to the efficiency of any Carbon-In-Leach or Carbon-In-Pulp process. Reduced activity can lead to longer residence times or gold losses in the tails. Regenerated carbon from the CIL circuit at Macraes Gold Mine was analysed for kinetic activity and composition over a 15 month period. An increase in kinetic activity during the time period was recorded, which was linked to reduced Na and Ca loadings. A laboratory simulation of the loading, stripping and regeneration of gold was developed and tested. Kinetic activities were obtained for synthetically fouled carbons following three circuits of the laboratory simulation. It was shown the competitive gold adsorption ability of xanthate fouled carbon (previously reported as a serious deactivator) could be significantly recovered following effective thermal regeneration. This ability was maintained in a subsequent circuit loading.

The distribution of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits through time is episodic, involving relatively short time intervals of apparent high productivity and long intervals of low productivity. This distribution is principally related to the geodynamic evolution of the Earth. The vast majority of these deposits is associated with the assembly of supercontinents and form along convergent margins, generally in back-arc basins or rifted arcs. This contrasts with the distribution of black smoker deposits, which presently form along both convergent margins, particularly in the western Pacific, and divergent margins at mid-ocean ridges. However, the latter environment is rarely preserved deep into the geological past.There also appear to be systematic patterns in a number of other features of volcanic-hosted massive deposits through time. Deposits hosted by mafic-dominated successions are dominant in Archean to Proterozoic rocks, whereas deposits hosted by felsic-dominated successions are most common in Phanerozoic rocks. Geochemical characteristics of felsic rocks within the host successions and ore lead and sulfur isotope data of the ores have also changed with time. This suggests changes in the process of subduction and/or changes in the characteristics of the over-riding plate with time, consistent with isotopic and geologic evidence for greater reworking of pre-existing crust during the Phanerozoic.Other secular changes that are reflected in characteristics of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits include the redox state and salinity of coeval oceans. As an example, both the abundance of sulfate minerals and sulfur isotope patterns reflect the development of periods of anoxic conditions over time, with major intervals of anoxia reflected by a virtual lack or low abundance of sulfate minerals in volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits in the Mesoarchean to the Palaeoproterozoic, and shorter intervals since.CITATION:Huston, D L, Eglington, B, Pehrsson, S, Piercey, S and Doublier, M, 2015. The Australian Coal Combustion Testing and Research Facility has been operating commercially for one year and during that period coal product evaluations have been conducted on behalf of four coal companies and one electricity commission. The facility is equipped to assess the behaviour of steaming coal in milling, combustion (including flame stability, burnout and heat transfer), ash deposition and erosion, fly ash collection and gaseous emissions. The relevance of the results of the pilot testing to industrial practice was demonstrated during the calibration of the facility using four coals burnt in Australian power stations. The calibration coals were from the Tarong and Gladstone Power Stations in Queensland, tluja Power Station in Western Australia and Bayswater Power Station in New South Wales. Also an opportunity arose to visit an overseas power station to observe a full scale test burn using one of the early coals tested on a commercial basis in the combustion test facility. The calibration trials showed excellent agreement with industrial coal performance in t:orms of flame stability, turndown, carbon burnout and gaseous emissions. Encouraging correlations were also found in the case of furnace radiation, boiler deposits (slagging and fouling) and electrostatic precipitation. In the case of the last group the only real reservations about the correlations are due to the non-availability or qualitative nature of results collected around the power stations. In all cases there is a high degree of confidence in the facility's ability to predict the relative performance of different coals and in some cases direct numerical predictions can be Made.

A Transient Electromagnetic (TEM) geophysical survey was trialled in Bowen Basin Permian coal measures overprinted by Cretaceous intrusion. The trial’s intention was to compare whether TEM could assess residual coal more accurately and economically than drilling.TEM results were promising but had limitations. TEM did not compare to drilling for defining coal thickness or relative level definition. However, TEM resolved conductive anomalies laterally; providing a qualitative picture of remnant coal.Three material types and associated conductivities occur within the trial area: overburden (sandstone/siltstone), intrusive sills and heat affected coal.Ground conductivity was analysed by measuring decay of residual current within the TEM loop. Fast decay related to resistive overburden and intrusion, attenuated decay related to conductive coal.Generally speaking, carbon content governs coal resistivity where good quality, low ash, bright coal is more resistive relative to dull, high ash coal. Though in the trial area, relative to intrusion and overburden, coal was found to be the most conductive of the three materials.By modelling conductive anomalies, a general picture emerged of remnant coal regions. Mexican epithermal deposits can be broadly grouped into two types based on their contained metals, distribution, associated igneous rocks and fluid inclusion compositions. Silver-gold deposits (eg Tayoltita) mostly occur in the western part of northernMexico where host rocks consist of Eocene, intermediate composition volcanic and intrusive rocks; fluid inclusion studies indicate that mineralising fluids were <300¦C and dilute (=3 eq. wt. % NaCl). In contrast, silver-lead-zinc deposits (eg Fresnillo) mostly occur in the central part of northern Mexico where they are temporally associated with Oligocene-Miocene volcanic rocks and intrusions of felsic composition, but commonly hosted within underlying Paleozoic-Mesozoic sedimentary rocks; fluid inclusion studies indicate that mineralizing fluids ranged from 200 to 400 ¦C and were saline (=10 eq. wt. % NaCl). The distribution of these two deposit types, crosscutting major crustal sutures, and the close spatial-temporal relationships between mineralisation and magmatism, together suggest that magmatic processes were more important in the formation of mineralising solutions, as a source of both ligands and metals, than the segments of crust hosting deposits.

Ore from the Browns deposit near Batchelor, in the Northern Territory of Australia, is a fine-grained polymetallic sulfide ore hosted in graphitic black shale. Minerals of economic significance are seigenite (Co,Ni)4S3, Galena (PbS) and Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) with minor Sphalerite (ZnS). Gangue minerals include quartz, carbon and K-feldspar. The grain size is fine, with a significant amount of the seigenite present as Early flotation work determined that a grind size of around 20 microns was required to achieve clean sulfide concentrates. This work recommended oil agglomeration flotation, in which small sulfide minerals were collected, then loosely agglomerated with oil ahead of flotation into a heavily mineralised froth. In the 400 kg/hr prototype plant this froth proved unmanageable. A conventional flotation circuit after grinding to a P80 of 24 microns and using very low flotation pulp densities resulted in an 86 per cent cobalt recovery.The paper analyses further laboratory work which has increased cobalt recovery to 91 per cent by grinding to û250 microns ahead of flash flotation. The real cobalt recovery breakthrough comes from flash flotation of the whole mill discharge rather than the more usual flash flotation of cyclone underflow. Flash flotation tailings are ground to û38 microns and are floated under normal flotation conditions with only the scavenger concentrates being reground to 20 microns.A one tonne per hour prototyping campaign is scheduled to demonstrate the robustness of this circuit.

Previously published stream quality data and AMD (acid mine drainage) analyses have been collated into a database (DAME û Database for Assessment of Mine Environments) and additional samples including NMD (neutral mine drainage) have been collected from coal mine drainages on the West Coast. Variations in the chemistry of mine drainage samples can be related to four factors: 1.       regional geology (Brunner Coal Measures or Paparoa Coal Measures) 2.       mine type (open cast or underground) 3.       hydrogeology 4.       local geology   In general mines hosted in Paparoa Coal Measures produce NMD whereas mines hosted in Brunner Coal Measures produce AMD with highly variable chemistry. Differences in coal mine drainage chemistry between mines hosted in Brunner and Paparoa Coal Measure sequences can be measured with acid-base accounting geochemistry. Correlation of ANC (acid neutralising capacity) and MPA (maximum potential acidity) analysis of rocks with mine drainage samples is substantially better than correlation of NAG (net acid generation) analysis with mine drainage chemistry.   It is likely that NAG analysis over estimates acid generation potential of some samples due to release of organic acids that are not released under environmental conditions. In general, differences in mine drainage chemistry between Brunner and Paparoa hosted mines are attributed to the effect depositional environment and diagenesis on coal measure composition. Exceptions to generalisations relating mine drainage to Paparoa or Brunner host rocks are likely where local geological conditions cause increased deposition of pyrite in Paparoa rocks and additional analyses are required to confirm interpretations.   Based on the interpretation of these results a mine drainage chemistry hazard model has been constructed. The hazard model predicts likely variations in mine drainage chemistry based on the four factors listed above. The hazard model has implications for mine related water quality risks. For example, ecotoxicity, human health affects and selection of remediation techniques are all sensitive to mine drainage chemistry.
