THE compression of gases to a very high degree, for purposes of scientific research, has long presented serious difficulties to the physicist. Great advances have been made of late years in the construction of ordinary air or exhaust pumps, while very little has been done towards the improvement of compression pumps. The principal difficulties encountered in the construction of such apparatus are the existence of the so-called "dead space" in the pump barrels, leakage of the piston packings under high pressure, and the trouble arising from the unequal expansion of parts caused by the development of the latent heat of the gas during compression. Of these obstacles to success, the "dead space" is far the most serious, as it fixes a limit to the performance of the pump beyond which it is impossible to carry the compression. SECONDARY hardening in tempering has long been recognized as a typical characteristic of steels containing large amounts of carbide-forming alloys. These steels, when quenched and tempered, tend to soften somewhat after tempering at low temperatures, and to reharden at intermediate tempering temperatures before finally softening to low hardness. This behavior in tempering has been studied by many investigators, chiefly with respect to the secondary hardening of high-speed steels. The initial softening has usually been ascribed to decomposition of martensite and growth of iron carbide particles. The secondary hardening has been explained by formation of fresh martensite from residual austenite, formation of very fine alloy carbide particles and by precipitation hardening of metallic compounds in the ferritic matrix. However, factors derived for the calculation of tempered hardness in low-alloy steels1 indicated only a tendency toward retarded softening rather than a discontinuous rehardening. A study was, therefore, made to determine whether fresh martensite from residual austenite and precipitation hardening are essential to rehardening and the degree to which tempered martensite could be rehardened by precipitation of alloy carbides. The mechanism of carbide rehardening was also investigated to determine the nature of the process. The causes of secondary hardening in high-speed steel have received serious consideration for about thirty years. Among the earlier workers Bain and Jeffries2 in 1923 recognized residual austenite as a significant factor, but in addition, emphasized the effect of the formation of alloy carbide particles of "critical" size. They conceived that freshly quenched martensite forms low-alloy iron carbide at low tempering temperatures; with further tempering the iron carbide is then modified by alloying elements that can diffuse most readily at intermediate temperatures (850°F); and that the iron carbides grow in size by coalescence so that the steel tends to lose hardness. At higher tempering temperatures carbide stability rather than alloy availability becomes the controlling influence and in high-speed steel "iron-tungsten carbide is the most stable one and forms to the elimination of the earlier formed carbides. . . . The iron-tungsten carbide particles reach approximately the size for critical dispersion after a short reheat at 1100°F." This concept, the formation of alloy carbide nuclei, redissolving of the iron carbide, and diffusion of carbon to the alloy carbide, was restated for vanadium steel in 1932 by Houdremont, Bennek, and Schrader.3 Subsequent studies have confirmed that iron carbide changes to alloy carbide at 1000 to 1100°F, but the mechanism of the process has received little consideration .

The recovery and recrystallization characteristics of superpurity aluminum have been investigated using electrical resistivity, X-ray line breadth, and hardness measurements for the former and the micrographic method for the latter. The three different properties recover at different rates and have different activation energies. The recrystallization results agree well with Avrami&apos;s theory and furthermore indicate that the perfect subgrains formed during recovery are not the nuclei for re-crystallization. WHEN a metal is plastically deformed, its physical and mechanical properties generally undergo considerable changes and by subsequent annealing these changes are partly or wholly annihilated. Thus, a recovery process can be discussed, taking this term in its general sense. In practice, however, there is reason to discriminate between two apparently different processes, one most easily followed at low temperatures, in which the properties return to an almost constant value between that of the cold worked and fully annealed material, and a second process in which the properties return to their original values before cold working and which is accompanied by the formation and growth of new grains having an orientation different from that of the matrix. In this paper the word recovery will be taken to mean the changes in some property as a function of annealing time which occur either without the appearance of new grains or under conditions such that the new re-crystallized grains are very small (= 2 microns), are very few in number, and substantially do not affect the property being measured. This definition is rather abitrary, for it will depend upon the sensitivity of the technique used for the observation of new recrystallized grains, which in the present work was about 1 to 2 microns. However, it is helpful to use the term recovery in this sense and to reserve the term recrystallization for the processes of nucle-ation and growth of new grains in the cold worked matrix. Although considerable work has been done on recovery and recrystallization, most workers have based their study on the measurement of one or perhaps two parameters. Since very small amounts of impurities have such a profound effect on the recrystallization characteristics of a pure metal, it becomes extremely difficult to correlate one piece of work with another. With this in mind, the present work on recovery and recrystallization was done on the same material. Experimental Procedure Material Used and Fabrication: The composition of the superpurity aluminum used throughout this investigation was 0.002 pct Cu, 0.003 pct Fe, 0.003 pct Si, and <0.001 pct Mg. The ingot was hot rolled to 0.250 in., annealed, and cold rolled to 0.034 in. A large number of reductions and intermediate anneals were carried out so as to produce material with a minimum of preferred orientation and maximum homogeneity. For the recovery part of the investigation, the final cold reduction was 20 and 80 pct and for the recrystallization part, 20 pct. After each pass in the cold rolling process, the material was quenched in cold water in order to keep the rolling temperature as near room temperature as possible. Annealing Procedure: For the recrystallization work, specimens 1x1 in. were cut from the 0.034 in. cold rolled sheet and a hole was drilled in each through which a wire was threaded to support it in the salt bath. The temperature of the salt bath was controlled to +2°C and the time taken for a specimen to reach temperature was approximately 5 sec. These 1 in. squares were then divided into three groups, one of which was given 5 min at 318°C and another 2 hr at 244°C. These treatments were such that recovery was almost complete and a well defined subgrain structure produced. Separate specimens of each group were annealed for different times at 301°, 318°, 355°, and 373°C, i.e., three specimens for each annealing time. The delay between finish of cold working and start of annealing was about 1 hr. For the recovery work, strips 0.062 in. thick were cut from the cold worked sheet, annealed, and then given the last cold rolling operation. This was done for each annealing temperature. By this means it was possible to minimize the delay between cold working and annealing. In general, all measurements were carried out within 1 hr of the last cold rolling operation. Annealing at low temperatures was done in an oil bath the temperature of which was maintained constant to +1°C. Electrical Resistivity Measurements: Strips 20x0.5x0.05 in. were machined and the electrical resistance measured using a Kelvin double bridge. Measurements were made in an oil bath maintained at 20rt0.1°C. The same specimen was used for the complete isothermal annealing curve.

Briefly, an open stope is one in which the ore is taken out and no filling is put in; the only support for the walls may be posts or pillars of ore. Such a method is limited to orebodies with strong walls and ore strong enough to stand unsupported over the back of the stope. Details vary and depend on the dip of the vein, mode of breaking ground, method of handling broken ore, and so forth. This article demonstrates that the Gilvarry and Klimpel-Austin equations for the random fracture of solids are incorrect by deriving intuitively correct expressions for simple cases and showing that the foregoing equations do not reduce to right answers. It is the purpose of this article to point out serious errors in some existing treatments of the random fracture of solids. Gilvarry &apos; gives the equation where B(y,x) is the cumulative fraction by weight of particles which fall below size y when particles of size x are broken. The constants i, j, k contain shape factors and densities of flaws leading to propagating fracture surfaces. The authors believe this equation to be incorrect. Klimpel and usttin&apos; give where r~ is the number of fracture planes originating from edge flaws (per L where L is the edge length of the original particle), rs is the number of fracture planes originating from flaws on the particle surface (per S where S is the surface of the original particle) and rv is the number of fracture planes originating from flaws within the particle volume. This equation is also incorrect. The failures of these equations will be demonstrated by deriving intuitively correct expressions for simple cases and showing that the Eqs. 1 and 2 do not reduce to the correct answer. In this process, the flaws in statistical reasoning inherent in the derivations of Eqs. 1 and 2 become apparent. THE KLIMPEL-AUSTIN EQUATION Eq. 2 was derived by considering a set number of fracture planes occurring spatially at random within a given particle. This case will be treated here in its simplest form: a line with 1, 2, 3, etc., fractures occurring at random. This is illustrated in Fig. 1, with the original length of the line as Vo. The breakage of a long, thin, brittle fiber is a corresponding physical case, with the volume of a fragment proportional to its length. Assuming independence of the occurrence of the fractures, the probability of any one fracture occurring in length dV is dV/V0. The Army Reorganization Act, which became effective July 1, 1916, contains a provision authorizing the organization of an Officers&apos; Reserve, in which will be included a Corps of Reserve Engineers. There will also be an Enlisted Reserve of skilled workmen in technical lines. INTRODUCTION ELECTROSTATIC methods of separation are used only when some peculiar advantage is gained. Such cases are minerals that are not separable by differences in specific gravity or magnetic response and that are desired in particles as large as 10-mesh, a size on which flotation separation is inefficient. This paper covers several separations of this type and others. It includes studies in the electrostatic behavior of kyanite, sillimanite, and zircon, simple silicates that cannot be called either acid or basic but are more nearly neutral. Kyanite and sillimanite are both desired in 10-mesh size and are difficult to beneficiate from low-grade ores to give that type of concentrate. A separation of garnet from diopside was studied because this mixture had been removed from a wollastonite product by drying and magnetic separation, and no special or extra-preparation for electrostatic separation was necessary. THE SEPARATOR The separator used in these tests is of the nonhomogeneous field type shown in Fig I[a]. It consists of a 11.4-cm-diam rotating metal roll 2 at ground potential over which the dry mixture of minerals is fed. The roll serves as one electrode of the separating field, and the other electrode is that of 3, a smaller 5-cm-diam rotating metal cylinder which is held at a high direct-current potential. In this paper the term "electrode" will be confined to the electrode at 3, roll 2 being designated only as "roll." [ ]

PART I INTRODUCTION Among the zinc base alloys used for casting in metal moulds, particularly die casting, those alloys containing aluminum usually together with copper, are probably the most widely used. The reason lies in their desirable mechanical properties and the fluidity and absence of hot shortness which facilitate casting. Objection to the use of these alloys may bee raised on account of the rather frequent instances of failure of a type variously described as disintegration, exfoliation and intercrystalline corrosion. In all cases which have come to our knowledge where the conditions of service were known, failure has occurred upon exposure to moisture and heat varying from a hot moist atmosphere to high pressure steam. Moreover, the alloys described in all such cases contain impurities or alloying metals which the present authors have found to have enormous accelerating effects on intercrystalline oxidation in zinc-aluminum alloys. Thus Williams1 experimented with an alloy containing a large percentage of tin exposed in Cuba. Bauer2 reports failure of a boiler plug containing over 1 per cent. of impurities, doubtless lead for the most part, and Rawdon&apos;s3 examinations were made on an alloy containing 0.4 per cent. lead also exposed to the Tropics. No thorough investigation of the nature and cause of this type of failure has been made heretofore, so far as the authors are aware, although Rawdon correctly classified it as internal oxidation. We have, therefore, carried out this investigation in order to determine the exact nature of this phenomenon and the effect of other metals present as impurities or intentional additions in accelerating or-retarding it. In the appendix we include a considerable amount of data which may be valuable in selecting an alloy combining good physical properties with high resistance to oxidation.

Investigation of martensite habit plane in water-quenched Ti-Mn alloys was carried out in the range of manganese contents between 4.35 and 5.25 pct. On the basis of 22 measurements, the poles were observed to fall into two groups, indicating the existence of two habit planes. The Miller indices of the poles close to these two groups were found to be <334>ß and <344>ß. TITANIUM has an allotropic transformation at 882.1° ± 0.5C1 by which the high temperature ß (body-centered cubic) phase changes to a (hexagonal close-packed) phase. It is well known, as in the case of low carbon steel, that the unalloyed high temperature ß phase cannot be retained no matter how rapid the cooling rate. However, the addition of alloying elements usually lowers the transformation temperature continuously and stabilizes the ß phase to a temperature much lower than the allotropic transformation temperature in pure titanium. A typical example of this behavior is found with manganese-alloying of titanium. Fig. 1 shows the titanium-rich Ti-Mn equilibrium diagram as established by Battelle Memorial Institute.&apos; The addition of manganese lowers the ß transus line and the eutectoid reaction takes place at 550°C, the eutectoid composition being 20 wt pct Mn. However, upon quenching to room temperature from the ß field, the ß phase can be completely retained with much less manganese, see Fig. 2. If the composition is less than that required to stabilize the ß phase completely, a plate-like structure, similar to that of martensite in other alloy systems, appears as shown in Fig. 3. Much lower alloying content merely intensifies the amounts of these transformed structures, as shown in Fig. 4. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the habit plane of these martensitic structures in Ti-Mn alloys. Experimental Procedure Investigation of the pole of a given platelet was made using the two-surface method of analysis." In order that a given martensite trace on two surfaces be readily recognized both at low and high magnifications, it is desirable that only a small amount of martensite be present. From a review of the data obtained at Battelle Memorial Institute4 on quench hardening in Ti-Mn alloys and the results of Duwez" on transformation in Ti-MO alloys, it was decided that the most appropriate Ti-Mn composition for this study would be about 6 pct Mn. A group of alloys containing from 3 to 10 pct Mn was made to bracket this composition. The choice of the 6 pct alloy was apparently proper, since it was later learned that approximately 5.5 to 6 pct Mn is required to stabilize the ß phase on water quenching.

Byproducts are more important to the copper mining companies than to the copper market. Copper ores frequently contain gold, silver, molybdenum, lead, zinc, and cobalt. With the increase in the prices of these metals copper mining has become more profitable. If byproduct prices remain high, additional firms will be attracted to the copper industry; the increased supply of copper will reduce the long-run copper price. However, this is unlikely to happen because the markets for the copper byproducts, especially molybdenum and cobalt, are small. Increased recovery from copper and other sources will depress the prices of these byproducts before the copper price is significantly affected. Should byproduct prices remain high, the copper market will both settle at a lower long-run price and be more unstable in the short run. Since changes in the copper price do not affect the entire earnings of a multi-metal mine, the copper price must fall further before such mines reduce output in the short run. Higher byproduct revenues will make copper supply less responsive to copper prices; shifts in copper demand will result in greater copper price fluctuations in the short run than they did before.

A study is made of the amount of solution loss necessary to maintain the reducing power of the gas stream in the blast furnace. Curves are presented to show the effect of solution loss, moisture in the blast, and carbon dioxide from the flux on the nitrogen in the THE blast furnace process is based upon the counter flow of gases and solids. As CO, N, and H, flow upward from the combustion zones, oxygen is acquired from the descending charge. In the reduction of iron ore, a portion of CO is converted to CO, and similarly a portion of H, is converted to water vapor. The inert N,, from the air used in combustion, passes through the furnace with little change. Its concentration is, however, decreased by reactions such as direct reduction and solution loss which increase the volume of CO in the gas stream; Similarly the evolution of C02 from the limestone also dilutes the nitrogen. he purpose of this paper is to illustrate an idealized and simplified method of studying furnace processes by following changes in the gas phase between the tuyeres and the stock line. A more specific objective is to evaluate the effect of solution loss upon the CO/CO, ratio in that region of the furnace in which FeO is reduced to metallic iron. This last stage of reduction requires relatively high CO/CO, ratios to exceed the equilibrium requirements. Solution loss or the reaction of COZ with C to produce CO has a pronounced effect upon the ratio of the carbon gases and is necessary to maintain the reducing power of the gas stream if the consumption of coke is low. It will be explained later that indirect reduction followed by solution loss is stoichiometri-cally equivalent to direct reduction. Calculations will be made to show how the composition of the gas in the region of the mantle varies with coke consumption and with different amounts of solution loss. Such calculations show the condi- tions under which gasification of C with oxygen in the charge is needed to maintain the reducing power of the gas. Equilibrium conditions for FeO and the carbon gases will be used to establish a minimum CO/CO, ratio below which reduction will not proceed. The manner in which carbon is gasified in the furnace, at the tuyeres with oxygen in the air or above the tuyeres with oxygen from the charge, will be a basic feature of all calculations. It is hoped that greater interest in the use of top gas as a means of following furnace reactions will be aroused by the calculations and generalized curves which are presented. Bosh Gas Equations Subject to some alteration by the amount of moisture in the blast and by direct reduction, the gas leaving the combustion zones of a blast furnace has a definite composition. Because a relatively small amount of oxygen is acquired from the charge in the bosh and in the crucible, the products of combustion undergo little change until they enter the shaft. Bosh gas is, therefore, essentially the products of combustion of carbon in a deep fuel bed with air. During 1938 the Russian oil industry, while able to increase its production 4.69 per cent above the preceding year, was not successful in correcting some of its basic difficulties, and the industry&apos;s position as it entered 1939 was unsatisfactory. The internal political difficulties of 1937 and 1938 took a toll in the oil industry as they did elsewhere in the U. S. S. R., further complicating the solution of the problems facing it, most important of which still remain: lack of experienced and responsible leadership, able to make quick decisions; undisciplined and migratory labor; and insufficient and often unsatisfactory quality of the various equipment needed by the industry and its ineffective distribution. Recent developments in the U. S. S. R. suggest that during 1939 the management will be granted more latitude and hence somewhat better results may be anticipated from the executive branch, provided, however, the "purges" do not recur. The labor should be better disciplined and should not shift as easily, owing to the introduction, at the close of 1938, of individual labor passports to all workers in the country, the principal purpose of which is to correct those two deficiencies. It is not anticipated, however, that the service of supply will show any appreciable improvement in 1939, partly because of inherent difficulties and partly because the manufacturers of heavy machinery are working primarily and necessarily for munitions. Production Production of crude oil during 1938 is estimated at 224,714,000 bbl., as compared with 212,742,000 bbl. in 1937, an increase of 4.69 per cent but 12.76 per cent below the planned output. While there were no major readjustments in the source of supply of crude oil, both the older districts, Baku and Grozny, were barely able to maintain their 1937 levels of production, the increased output being supplied primarily by the fields of Maikop and Ural Permian Basin districts.
