Safety and health are no longer secondary responsibilities but must be of paramount concern to every mining operation, according to Anthony J. Thompson, an attorney with Hamel, Park, McCabe & Saunders of Washington D.C. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) forecasts an estimated 19,000 inspections during 1979, and the economic and psychological impact of these inspections may he significant. To illustrate his point Thompson reviewed the experiences of a relatively large operation during a recent MSHA visit. The inspector was on the premises for two months, issuing between 250 to 300 "significant and substantial" (s&s) citations. During the most intensive period, about one month in duration, the operation experienced a production loss estimated between 2500 to 3000 tons; an accident rate up 30% over the previous month and 20% over the same month in the preceding year; 100% of the safety director's and safety engi¬neer's time was devoted to the inspection; 50% of top level management's time; and 90% of the mid-level or front line supervisory's time.

Introduction. THE New London copper mine, about 81, miles east of Frederick, Md., was visited by the Writers for a few hours in the spring of 1909 and the following brief notes on ore specimens collected are presented as a contribution to studies in chalcocite ores. For certain data on the structural and areal geology of this portion of Maryland the writers are under obligation to the unpublished notes and maps of Arthur Keith. The detailed study of the ores is the work of B. S. Butler. The deposit here discussed has many similarities to those of the Virginia district of Virginia and North Carolina, which have been described y Graton1 and Laney2, except that in the deposits of the New London mine chalcocite is by far the most important ore mineral, while in the Virginia deposits bornite is commonly-the most important sulphide. In the New London occurrence calcite is the most important gangue mineral.

Defor~nation twinning and transformation twinning modes most likely to be operative in Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-C martensites have been determined using a new theory of the crystallography of deformation t~inning.~ This analysis shows that potentially important conventional and nonconventional twinning modes1 have been omitted in previous analyses. Discussion is given on the relevance of the predicted twinning modes to the lattice invariant shear associated with the martensite transformation in steels and to anomalous deformation twinning in Fe-Ni-C martensites. THE two most important criteria which appear to govern operative twinning modes in metallic structures1 are that the magnitude of the twinning shear should be small and that the twinning shear should restore the lattice or a multiple lattice in a twin orientation. The latter criterion ensures that the shuffle mechanism required to restore the structure in a twin orientation is simple. These criteria have been adhered to in the prediction of twinning modes2"6 in bcc and bct single-lattice structures with axial ratios in the range y = 1 to 1.09 as, for example, encountered in martensite occurring in steels. Refs. 2 and 3 in particular consider the martensite transformation in steels and the twinning modes in these cases relate to transformation twinning, and hence the lattice invariant shear associated with the martensite transformation. The list of twinning modes which can be compiled from these sources is incomplete and the ranges of magnitude of shear considered could be unrealistically small, particularly in the case of deformation twinning. The latter consideration is supported by the fact that twinning modes with magnitudes of shear large compared with the smallest shear consistent with a simple shuffle mechanism have been established in, for example, the single-lattice structure mercury7 and the multiple-lattice structure zirconium.&apos; In addition the anomalous deformation twins reported by Ftichrnan4 to occur in a range of Fe-Ni-C martensites still remain unexplained. It is clear that a comprehensive analysis of twinning modes likely to be operative in martensite In steels is required. The results of the application of a new theory of the crystallography of deformation twinningg to these structures are presented in this paper. The theory has been used to determine all shears which restore the lattice or a multiple lattice in a new orientation with magnitude of shear up to a required maximum. The orientation relationships between parent and twinned lattices are not restricted to the classical orientation relationships of reflection in the twin plane or a rotation of 180 deg about the shear direction. PREDICTED TWINNING MODES Twinning modes which restore all or one half of lattice points to their correct twin positions will be referred to as m = 1 and m = 2 modes, respectively. These modes are the most likely to describe operative modes in single lattice structures. The bcc m = 1 and m = 2 modes which have magnitudes of shear s in the range s < 2 and s < 1, respectively, have been given10 and are reproduced here in Tables I and 11. Detailed discussion of the crystallography of these modes and cubic modes in general will be discussed elsewhere (~evis and rocker, to be published). The four twinning elements Kl, &,ql,7)2 as well as the magnitude of shear s are given for each twinning mode, and the twinning modes are given in order of increasing shear. Two twinning modes are given in each row of the tables, the twinning mode Kl, Kz, ql, q2 and the reciprocal twinning mode with elements Kl = K,, Ki = Kl, q: = q2, and 17; = ql. The m = 1 and m = 2 twinning modes which describe twinning shears with small magnitudes of shear and simple shuffle mechanisms in bct crystals with -y = 1 to 1.09 are given in Tables I11 and IV, respectively. On increasing the symmetry of the tetragonal lattice to cubic, that is making y = 1, all modes listed in Tables 111 and IV must reduce to crystallographically equivalent variants of the modes given in Tables I and 11, respectively, or become twinning modes with both shear planes as symmetry planes in the cubic lattice and hence not considered in Tables I and 11. With the exception of this last type of mode only those tetragonal twinning modes which reduce to modes 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, and 2.2 of Tables I and I1 are considered in Tables 111 and IV. For values of y in the range -y = 1 to 1.09 the tetragonal modes and the corresponding cubic twinning modes have approximately the same magnitude of shear. Uranium ore deposits in the Lisbon Valley area are in an arcuate belt, 15 miles long by one-half-mile wide, on the southwest flank of the Lisbon Valley anticline. They range in size from 500 to 1,500,000 tons and by mid-1965 had yielded 6,147,000 tons containing 48,530,000 pounds of U3O8. Ore bodies average 6 feet thick, are tabular, amoeba-shaped masses, concordant to the bedding, and are in the thickest, lowest sandstone unit of the Moss Back Member of the Chinle Formation of Triassic age. The host rock is predominantly a fluviatile, calcareous, fine-grained to conglomeratic sandstone. Uraninite, the principal ore mineral, fills the pores in the sandstone and partly replaces sand grains and fossil wood fragments. During Late Permian and Early Triassic time pre-Chinle Formations were arched to form the ancestral Permian anticline. Moss Back streams truncated Moenkopi and Cutler beds which capped the ancestral anticline and then covered it with fluviatile elastics, which were subsequently covered by thousands of feet of Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous sediments. Uranium, probably derived from the Chinle Formation by diagenetic processes, was transported in connate ground waters, was moved by compaction or hydrostatic forces, and was deposited under reducing conditions. Uranium was emplaced around the crest of the ancestral anticline, prior to the Laramide orogeny. During the orogeny, the Tertiary-Lisbon valley anticline was super induced on the Permian anticline and, penecontemporaneous with uplift, was faulted parallel to its longitudinal axis. The Big Indian ore belt on the southwest flank footwall block was elevated to approximately its present position, and the northeast flank hanging wall block was elevated only slightly. An extension of the Big Indian ore belt around the northeast flank of the ancestral Permian anticline may exist in the Moss Back sandstone in the downthrown block northeast of the Lisbon Valley fault.

The change in shape of the void in a sirzterir~g copper mass has been investigated as a juntction of&apos; density. A serial sectioning&apos; technique was used to eoaltrate the irregular shape of the void at two levels qf density. A measure of the void size and configuration, the proximity number, is defined and used to describe the progress of void removal. The process of. void removal deduced front the observations of this study contrasts with current sintering models in that it takes into account the irregularity of structure of a sintering mass and demonstrates that isolated Porosity does not occur first as spherical pores, but as large, definitely nonspherical sections of the void void volume. The process of sintering, about which there is much practical and theoretical knowledge, has evaded a direct and thorough analysis despite the intensity with which it has been studied for 60 years or so. This is due, of course, to the complex structure of a sintering mass and the inability to observe directly the development of a fully dense solid from the initial particulate arrangement. Extensive theoretical analyses have been based on the adoption of one or another of several model systems, that is, by visualization and analysis of some sort of regular assembly or arrangement of geometric "particles" approximating the conditions of a sintering mass. It seems appropriate at this time to try to examine experimentally in some detail the extent to which a sintering mass of irregular particles dlffers from these models. Many models deal with neck growth and the initial stage of sintering and follow the direction established by ~ucz~nski&apos; in 1949 for the sintering of spheres to flat plates. Recently Johnson and cutler2 have adapted these models to sintering of powder masses. coble3 has presented a mathematical model for sintering that applies to the middle and final stages of the process. These papers, without exception, assume a regular geometry, generally spheres in contact in a regular array. Rhines~ and coworkers, however, are studying the sintering process by applying a model based on the topological concept of genus which permits them to consider an irregular structure. whites has described the various models with the exception of that of Rhines et al., and the assumptions on which they are based and their shortcomings. The present paper examines the geometric changes that occur in the powder mass during sintering by examination of the void. The method is to analyze a series of partially sintered structures and to propose from this analysis the sequence of events which occur in the removal of the void space as a sintering mass progresses from a collection of individual particles to a solid body. The irregular nature of the stacking of particles and of the particles themselves will be taken into account. The significant points derived from this study are: first, accurate reconstructions of the irregular void shapes are presented; second, it is clearly established that closed porosity occurs first as widespread volumes of interconnected porosity, definitely nonspherical in shape; and third, a new factor, the proximity number, is defined, which serves in this paper as a tool for describing the void shape changes observed, and which will be used in a later paper as part of the basis of a mathematical model for sintering. While the specific material studied is copper, the observations are thought to be relatively general as indicated by comparison of the results with partially sintered structures in other materials presented in the literature, both metallic and nonmetallic. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Four series of specimens representing progressive stages of the sintering process were prepared by sintering high-purity copper powder for various time periods. A relatively large particle size was used so that the void-solid interface could be readily distinguished at low magnification. In three series of specimens a loose stacking of particles was obtained by pouring powder into an alumina mold and lightly tapping the mold. The green density of such compacts was approximately 40 pct of theoretical density. Two of these three series utilized irregularly shaped particles in the size range -230 +325 mesh, one series sintered in vacuum and one in hydrogen at 950°C. The third series of loosely stacked particles consisted of spherical particles in the size range -270 +325 mesh, sintered in hydrogen at 950°C. A fourth series was prepared from compacted irregular particles sintered in hydrogen at 950°C. The specimens for this series were formed by lightly pressing the irregularly shaped particles in a steel die; the green density of the pressed pellets was approximately 60 pct. The irregularly shaped particles used in this study are shown in Fig. 1. The density of these particles, measured by a toluene picnometer technique, is 98.2 pct of theoretical density. Each particle is highly convoluted, and in some instances appears in cross section to contain internal porosity. The density measurement, however, indicates that completely enclosed porosity is very small so that the individual particles have a highly irregular surface but are essentially fully dense copper. Therefore, most of the void space that appears in two dimensions to be isolated within the particle is actually at the particle surface and connected to the external void in the dimension not included in the plane of the cross section. THE previous determinations of the solvus of tin in solid lead disagree with one another by as much as 40°C or almost 10 at. pct. Even determinations that appear to be careful differ considerably in both the solubility and its temperature coefficient. Recent kinetic workl -3 on the rate of precipitation of tin from lead-tin alloys and thermodynamic work4 on the heat of solution of tin in lead have given some insight into the time necessary to reach equilibrium in this system. As this time is longer than that used in almost all previous determinations of the solvus, these determinations are questionable. Since the interpretation of recent kinetic results requires accurate values of the equilibrium solubility the present work was undertaken. DISCUSSION OF PREVIOUS RESULTS The methods used in previous studies may be placed into three classes: 1) Several alloys covering a range of compositions are allowed to reach "equilibrium" at a certain temperature.5-7 Some property, such as the X-ray lattice parameter of the lead-rich phase or the re- sistivity of the alloy, is then measured as a function of composition. The solubility limit for that temperature is taken to be that composition at which a discontinuity in the property occurs. However, the recent kinetic work has shown that tin precipitates in two stages. The first stage is rapid but leaves the lead still supersaturated. The second stage is very slow, and it seems from the equilibration times quoted by the investigators of the solvus that the end of the first stage of precipitation was usually mistaken for equilibrium. This is especially true at temperatures below 100°C where the first reaction is still quite rapid (from minutes to months), but where the second stage is so slow that very long holding times are required to reach equilibrium. Alternatively micrographic work8 on several alloys of different compositions seems to have given good results if done carefully. 2) The beginning of precipitation in a homogenized alloy is measured as it cools slowly8-10. Since reactions in solids undercool easily, such determinations will always give too low a temperature for the solvus. 3) Some property of an alloy is measured as a function of temperature while the alloy is above the solvus.5,9,11 The range of temperature can usually be extended slightly into the two phase region. Then the alloy is precipitated at a much lower temperature and slowly reheated. The solvus is taken to be the lowest temperature where the property of the reheated alloy is equal to that previously determined for the homogeneous alloy. Usually one also expects a discontinuity at the solvus in the temperature variation of the property for the reheated alloy. The difficulty in this method is the sluggishness of the dissolution process, and this method may give too high a solvus temperature. EXPERIMENTAL The phase boundary or solvus temperature was determined by a modification of method 3 for a series of chemically analyzed high-purity alloys, ranging from 5.1 to 26.4 at. pct Sn. The resistance, as a function of temperature, of a sample of homogenized alloy (which could easily be undercooled) was compared with the equilibrium resistance which that alloy sample attained after precipitation at room temperature followed by long isothermal anneals at various temperatures. Before each anneal the sample was rehomogenized and reprecipitated. The solvus temperature could be located to within 1°C as the intersection of the resistance vs temperature curves for the homogenized and equilibrium alloys. No attempt was made to locate the phase boundary more accurately since the limiting factor was the precision with which the alloys could be analyzed. This precision was ±0.1 wt pct Sn and corresponds to an error of 1 deg in temperature. This use of isothermal anneals differs from some of the previous investigations in which method 3 was used with baths of slowly rising temperatures. It was found early in the investigation that solvus temperatures tended to be high if the latter method was used even at extremely slow heating rates. For example a

I. INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESULTS. The field-work upon which this paper is based was done in the summer of 1910, and was made possible by the courtesy of the Imperial Copper Co., which gave me access to its property. For their kindness in this respect I wish to express my thanks to W. F. Staunton and Meade Goodloe. Moreover,. B. F. Smith and G. B. Gentry, mining engineers in the employ of the company, gave invaluable assistance by placing maps,. etc., at my disposal, and by discussing with me the problems of the district; and it is a great pleasure to acknowledge this indebtedness to them. In order that the significance of some of the details that follow may be better appreciated at first reading, a general outline of the conclusions reached is given here. In the Silverbell mining-district a series of Palaeozoic limestone blocks is completely surrounded by post-Palaeozoic igneous rocks, intruded in the following order: alaskite, alaskite-porphyry, biotite-granite, andesite, and quartz-porphyry. The biotite-granite is believed to represent a differentiation of the. magma from which the alaskite-porphyry came ; and this conclusion-has an important hearing on the origin of the ores. The intrusion of both alaskite-porphyry and biotite-granite was followed by the emission of magmatic waters, which sericitized and silicified the alaskite-porphyry and granite, and produced in the limestone, by the addition to it of silica, iron, and alumina, great masses of garnet, quartz, and wollastonite. Following close upon these solutions came metal-bearing magmatic waters, which impregnated porphyry, granite, and alas kite with cupriferous pyrite, and deposited in the garnet zones chalcopyrite and copper-bearing pyrite that make important bodies of contact-metamorphic ores. Secondary enrichment has taken place in the disseminated ores in the igneous rocks,. raising their copper-content to 2 per cent. in some cases,. and extensive drilling has been undertaken to block out these deposits. East of the contact-metamorphic deposits there is a fissure-vein of lead-silver ore in the quartz-porphyry. This rock is distinctly younger than the alaskite-porphyry and the granite; and the lead-silver ores belong, therefore, to a period of mineralization distinctly later than the copper-deposition.

AT the present time the Climax Molybdenum Co. is the largest molybdenum producer in the world and the operator of the largest underground mine in North America. It has grown steadily and rapidly since its beginning in 1917. Only 250,000 lb of MoS2 were produced during the first year from 1917 to 1918 when the company was formed. Operations were suspended shortly thereafter because of the lack of a market and knowledge of the uses of molybdenum. During World War I it was used as a substitute for some rare metals and for minor chemical purposes. After 5 years of intensive research and sales promotion, Climax metallurgists succeeded in finding proper applications for the newly discovered metal and the mine was reopened in 1924. Demand for molybdenum increased gradually and in 1930, 3.5 million lb of MoS2 were produced. In the meantime, research work for additional uses of molybdenum continued until it had established itself as one of the most important alloying elements in producing high quality steels. After the start of World War 11, from January 1942 to October 1953, 43 million tons of molybdenum ore were mined and 484 million lb of MoS2 were produced. Climax mine is located in Colorado, 100 miles southwest of Denver and 12 miles northeast of Leadville on the Continental Divide of the Rocky Mountains. The principal mine workings range from 11,170 to 12,000 ft in elevation. Topographically, it lies in the base of a large cirque that is surrounded by Mt. Bartlett to the north, Clinton Peak and McNamee Peak to the east and Ceresco Ridge to the south. This cirque opens to the west and to the Ten Mile Valley.

(San Francisco fleeting, October, 1911.) DURING the past two years California has developed a new and important oil-field : I refer to Midway. This field produced the famous Lake View gusher, which is credited with a total production in excess of 8,000,000 barrels. Fortunately for the oil industry of the State, this well is now a thing of the past, and nothing save a great crater-like opening marks its location. The pipe is entirely worn away and gone ; and it is a matter of serious doubt if there can be anything done that will cause the well to produce again. Fortunately, also, there have been no, other wells in that field or elsewhere throughout the State that in any way compared with the Lake View. Midway is noted for large wells, of from 500 to 2,000 barrels production; but the decline is rapid, and a few months serve to bring the output down to a few hundred barrels. In the oil-territory heretofore blocked out as proved and probable, there have been, during the year, many changes. Some areas which were expected to be fairly productive have apparently failed; others, more strictly "wild-cat," have come in; while in some of the older fields there are properties which are beginning to show evident signs of exhaustion. The total area of proved territory will therefore probably suffer but small increase, when balances are struck off. The increase of new area has come from extensions of the Midway field, the development of a field in Lost Hills and Belridge, and extensions of the Fullerton-Whittier field in southern California. In these later developments, down to date, the fresh area absolutely proved is not much in excess of 3,000 acres. Recent developments in Coalinga indicate the possible extension of that field to the south, but at great depth. Coalinga is still the most northerly field of any consequence in the State. J. H. Schlobohm (Joy Manufacturing Co., New York) —This paper has been read with a good deal of interest; however, there are several salient features which Mr. Mitchell has overlooked. The initial emphasis on selection should be placed on type of material to be loaded and method of mining involved. There is no possible connection in the comparison of scraper or Joy Lohite loaders with loaders of any other type. Neither can an operating comparison be made between "Rocker type" loaders and those equipped with loading head and gathering arms. Each unit has its application, but the application depends on material and the mining system involved. Mr. Mitchell&apos;s compilation of data on various loaders, while it represents a great many facts, does not represent true operational data, i.e. Table I, column heading "Max. Rated Capacity for 7 hr;" these figures are meaningless inasmuch as little or no time at all is allowed for tramming or switching or moving the loader from place to place. Table I, column heading, "Best Reported Field Shift," would be a better source of operational data, assuming of course that conditions, applicable to each class of loaders, were average to avoid enthusiastic performance figures. Table I, column heading, "Repair Parts Cost per Ton," is still another item which will not stand up under comparison unless the loaders involved are put into type classes, i.e., there are simply no means possible to show the repair costs of scraper loading versus a caterpillar mounted loader in abrasive material. The source of information here is also important. Actual field tests have proved that these costs are of a constant nature. Manufacturers are striving to hold them to a minimum and many interesting studies have been made. A fairly recent example of this in a large United States gold producer has proved that Joy HL-3 loaders can be consistently average, less than $0.025 per ton mucked. IN THE Southwestern copper region the event of greatest interest was the starting up of the new Hurley, N. Mex., smelter of the Chino Mines division of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Corp., which occurred in May. This plant, built as a wet-charge smelter for treating largely an all-concentrate charge, embodies in its de- sign the latest in materials-handling equipment. Noticeable around this smelter is the absence of tram cars and trackage for the handling of charge, dust and other materials. Concentrate from the mills is received in bottom- dump cars which are unloaded into a series of concentrate bins. Concentrate is then reclaimed through the bottom of the bins and discharged through a feeder on to a conveyor belt. Flux for the charge is fed on to the conveyor ahead of the concentrate charge. The belt-mixed charge is conveyed to the furnace building and discharged into the furnace charge bin ready for feeding to the reverberatory furnace. As in the McGill plant, the furnace is fed by vibrating conveyors, one down each side of the furnace.

THE specific aim of this work has been to study certain forms of internal deterioration which occur in tungsten filaments when subjected to high temperatures under various conditions, and to determine the cause of such deterioration. This would naturally lead to a consideration of methods of control or means of prevention of the phenomena. The deterioration was first noticed as a peculiar condition in the grain boundaries of certain tungsten filaments which had been burned t for long periods in lamps. In these cases it was noted that the grain bound aries contained a number of minute black dots which were at first thought to be non-metallic inclusions. It was demonstrated later that these dots or pits, as they were designated, could be readily produced by burning filaments in an atmosphere of flowing hydrogen. This method was convenient and adequate for the purpose, and was adopted for most of the work discussed in this paper. The evidence accumulated to date indicates that these pits arc actually small voids between the grains. The purpose of this paper is to, present the information on this interesting subject gathered during a period of about 3 years. As applied to tungsten, the subject appears to be of considerable importance, experience having shown that this pitting is frequently associated with poor performance of filaments in lamps.

While the title of this paper embraces the entire West Coast, the author, in the interest of simplification. has confined the discussion to California-particularly the central section. California&apos;s population has, risen 45 pct since 1940. Its electric requirements have also increased, not only because of the growth in industry and population but also because of the widespread tendency of all types of electric consumers to use more electricity than ever before. The growth of California&apos;s electric utilities is shown by published data covering operations, of three of its large systems and is given in Table 1.

Discussion of Mr. Baker&apos;s paper, read at the Lake Superior Meeting, September, 1904. MR. T. F. WITHERBEE, Durango, Mexico (communication to the Secretary*) : Mr. Baker&apos;s paper is very instructive in that it shows how furnace-derangements sometimes originate from apparently slight causes. In 1896 a similar burning through of the lining occurred at the Mayville furnace of the Northwestern Iron Co., Mayville, Wis., in exactly 38 days from the time the furnace was blown in. At that time I attributed it to the fact that the bell was carried several inches to the front side of the furnace, the length of the versed side of the arc described by the lever, thus dumping a little more of the charge on the back side, which made the front side of the furnace-charge more open and consequently increased the circulation of the furnace gases through it. After reading Mr. Baker&apos;s description, I believe that possibly a little more ore was charged on the back side of the hopper, due to the fact that it was nearest to the elevator. This unequal charging, however, was unconsciously done, as the fillers were both honest and faithful. The illustration of the burned lining of Furnace No. 1, given in Fig. - of Mr. Baker&apos;s paper answers very well for the Mayville furnace. It shows that in both cases the destruction of the lining was largely due to faulty construction, in that there were no cooling-plates in the angle of the bosh and in one or two courses of brick above it, where I believe they are-more in demand than anywhere else in the furnace. The presence of these cooling-plates at the angle of the bosh would have obliged the current of the hot gases to turn the corner and would have prevented them from following the angle of the bosh com¬pletely through the lining and shell.

The results are presented of a study of the application of analytical methods to the solution of two-phase flow into single wells. Approximate analytical expressions for the pressure distribution in two-phase flow are found ;;; a number of conditions. The results obtained from the analytical solutions me found to be in good agreement with results obtained by finite difference techniques using a high speed digital computer. Mathematical solutions for four sets of boundary conditions are presented. All of these solutions are composed of a short-term transient plus a steady or quasi-steady state. The rates of decay of the short-lived transients are analyzed. It is found that the durations of the short-term transients may be characterized by a parameter defined as the time constant which can be determined from simple relations. It is shown also that if the outer radius is much greater than the radius of the well. the short term transients decay at rates which are proportional to the square of the exterior radius, and the rates of decay are only slightly dependent upon the radius ratio. Numerical solutions based on finite difference techniques are presented for a number of conditions. The numerical solutions are in good agreement with the predictions based on the theoretical analysis for small and moderate drawdowns. Examples involving large drawdowns indicate that the nonlinearities in the equations of flow do not appreciably alter the longevity of the short-term transients. In all cases the time required for the short-tern transients to disappear is predicted satisfactorily. INTRODUCTION The mechanism by which oil and gas flow into a single well is of vital interest to the petroleum industry. The fundamental equations of two-phase flow which describe this mechanism are nonlinear partial differential equations. Numerical solutions of these equations describing pressure transients have been obtained with the aid of electronic computers. Although solutions obtained in this manner take into account a large number of effects, the reduction of this information to useful generalities is difficult. One method of obtaining generalities is the use of linearized approximations of the nonlinear equations. Since it is possible to obtain explicit solutions of the linearized equation, general properties of the role of pressure in the flow mechanism may be ascertained. Results obtained from this approach are limited to some extent by the linearizing assumptions. The severity of these limitations may be evaluated by comparing solutions of the linear equation with numerical solutions of the more exact nonlinear equations of two-phase flow. In the past considerable amount of work has been devoted to studying pressure build-up using the single-phase flow theory. Unfortunate1y, most prep sure build-up tests involve multiphase flow. A small amount of work has been done studying pressure build-up where the flow is two-phase. The encouraging results of these studies suggest that useful results may be found from additional studies of not only pressure build-up, but also the rapid transients associated with placing a well on production. This paper presents the basic theory of the pressure transients associated with placing a well on production and with closing it in. The paper is concerned chiefly with two-phase compressible flow; however, the results also apply to single-phase flow. The results are based on analytical solutions of the flow equations, and they are verified by numerical solutions using finite difference techniques. Much of the previous work on compressible flow into wells has been confined to single-phase flow. Some work has been done on compressible two-phase steady state flow, and solutions of the equations of flow have been found by finite difference techniques using high-speed computers. Muskat1 presents some rather general solutions to the equations of single-phase compressible flow into wells. Much work has been done on pressure build-up in wells (see, for example, Refs. 2-6). Almost all of the work on pressure build-up concerns single-phase flow with the exception of Ref. 5 and part of Ref. 2. IN MOST diamond core drilling the primary objective is the recovery of samples to be used for chemical analysis, physical tests, or visual inspection. Unless these samples are reliable and the information systematically recorded, the time and money spent in securing them are largely wasted. A properly taken diamond-drill sample is similar to a properly moiled channel sample but more accurate. No channel sample can be moiled in as even a groove as the smooth cylinder of material normally removed in diamond drilling. More important still, sampling by the diamond drill practically eliminates that personal equation which Jora1emon4 reference numbers apply to publications listed in the bibliography at the end of this article) has aptly termed "the almost magnetic attraction of the most conscientious hand toward rich pieces of ore."

This report is a brief discussion of the impurity levels both in primary aluminum and super-purily alnminim in connection with raw materials and proc-essing methods. Particularly, truce amounls of im-purities were analyzed by introducing nittss-speclro-gruphy and nenlron-aclivalian analysis techniques. Vanadium and gallium content in primary aluminum metal corresponded to theor amounls in anode coke. but the nickel content in primary aluminum was hide-pendent oj its amount in the anode cake. Sulfur in the anode colic might result in an increase of the iron content in the molten metal in the reduction cell. The content of sodium and calcium increased with increasing bath ratio. In the holding furnacc sodium content decreased rapidly, and nonmetallic inclusions merit separated front the mollen metal. Three-layer elctrolysis was effectire in eliminating many impuri-ties with the exception of copper, aluminum oxide. aluminum nitride, and some rare-earth elements. THE amount of impurities and nonmetallic inclusions in aluminum metal depends on impurities in the raw materials and various production processes. This paper presents an investigation of the behavior of impurities and nonmetallic inclusions in aluminum during the electrolysis process, the period in the holding furnace, and the process of three-layer electrolysis. Chemical analysis and emission spectrometric analysis have generally been used as methods to determine small amounts of impurities in both primary aluminum and super-purity aluminum; however. mass spectrography and neutron-activation analysis have been recently introduced into this field, and trace amounts of impurities can accurately be determined by these latter methods. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Common impurities were determined by means of absorptiometric. polarographic, flame-photometric. and emission-spectrometric methods. However, in the determination of trace amounts of impurities and non-metallic inclusions, the following methods were applied. In the analyses of trace impurities by mass-spec- trographic analysis, samples were exposed in the vacuum spark of double-focus ing Mattauch-Herzog type mass spectrograph (Japan Electron Optics Laboratory, Ltd.). Ilford Q2 photographic plates were used as ion detectors. Fe was used as the internal standard, and the atomic concentration of each element was calculated by the following expression and converted into the weight concentration: where E, and Ei are the exposures (coulomb) when isotopes of the internal standard and impurity elements (on which the estimate is based) show the same density, X is the percent (atomic) concentration of the standard, IF and Ii are the percent abundances of the isotopes of the standard the impurity elements (on which the estimate is based), and Ms and hfi are the mass of the isotopes of the standard and impurity elements (on which the estimate is based). The coefficient of variation in this method is about 40 pct in the range of 0.1 to 1 ppm. In neutron-activation analysis, irradiations were done in the nuclear reactors TRIGA-I1 (neutron flux: 4.7 x 10 11 n per sq cm per sec; Rikkyo University) or JRR-2 (neutron flux: 2 x 1013 n per sq cm per sec: Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute). After the chemical separation, a NaI (3 by 3 in.) scintillator connected to a 256-channel y-ray spectrometer (R.C.L.) was used for counting and recording various activated impurities. The coefficient of variation in this method is about 20 pct. In the analyses of nonmetallic inclusions, aluminum-oxide determination was carried out according to Fischer&apos;s method, 3 as follows. A slice of sample was cut off and the surface was cleaned. It was dissolved in bromine-methanol. The solution was filtered and the residue was washed. The residue was fused with potassium bisulfate flux. Then it was dissolved in weak acid, and oxine solution was added. The aluminum oxinate was extracted with benzene. Finally, aluminum was determined absorptio-metrically. Aluminum nitride determination was carried out as follows. A slice of sample was cut off and the surface was cleaned. This paper discusses the impact of taxes at the state and federal level on typical on-shore oil and gas exploration economics in the USA. Taxes considered are the windfall profits excise tax, state production (or severance) taxes, state income tax, and federal income tax. Also considered will be market prices for oil and gas in the USA. The effect of government take as a percent of revenue, on rate of return, discounted Payout, and discounted cumulative cash flow is shown on the attached tables. The conclusion drawn is that tax laws, while rarely the most important factor to be considered when drilling a well, can have significant impact on the profitability of oil and gas ventures, and should be considered when determining where to drill. Hypothetical exploration wells were analyzed for the impact of tax laws on project profitability. The results of this study show that when factors other than taxes are postulated to be the same (such as producing rate, capital, operating costs, and prices), cash flow can vary by as much as 68% due to the differences in the tax laws. Other significant findings for the cases studied include: (a) that discounted payout varied by as much as 1.8 years, (b) that rate of return differed by up to 67% and (c) the total tax rate as a percentage of revenue had a maximum variance of 33%.

BURGESS, the new Chairman of the Industrial Minerals Division, took the advice of Horace Greeley in reverse-he turned his hack on San Francisco and the Golden Gate, and after a few side excursions toward Alaska and Arizona, hit the trail eastward, not for the lonesome pine, but for Spruce Pine, N. C. Born Aug. 10, 1893, in San Francisco. Burgess found his first job, shortly after finishing high school at 19, as axeman for a surveying party of engineers working for the Southern Pacific Co. in Oregon. Later he moved on up with them into Alaska. He liked the engineering profession, and decided to equip himself further so he entered the University of California in the fall of 1913. and for the next two years devoted himself to acquiring an education in civil engineering.
