UehlinG, New York City (communication to the Secretary*):—Mr. Baker's paper is one that brings up a subject of great importance, and if full statistics could be collectecl of the number of furnace-linings ruined by reason of bad distribution by skip-hoists, it would be found an astonishing array. Unfortunately a universal remedy has not yet been found. The fact that Mr. Baker has apparently succeeded in overcoming the trouble at Sydney, is no guarantee that the same remedy applied at another plant, where very different or even slightly different conditions prevail, mould cure the trouble. That it requires but a slight continuous difference of penetrability in the column of the descending stock of one section, over another, to produce channeling, is clearly demonstrated by Mr. Baker's experiments, by which he reversed the channeling from front to rear instead of remedying the trouble. Every change in the physical make-up of the charge necessarily requires a specific adjustment; even supposing this feasible, the regular working of the furnace is by no means assured, because with the high pressures now customary, the tendency of the ascending gases to plow their way through in a direct course, prevails, and having once opened up a passage, they will persist and cause trouble. CANANEA has long been recognized as a remarkable field for geologic study. The copper deposits and rocks of the district have been described by many geologists and engineers, but only the most general correlations have been made between Can-anea sedimentary rocks and other known sedimentary sections in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The present paper describes the Cananea sediments in greater detail than has been done before and attempts to fit the Cananea sedimentary section more closely into the geologic time table. The lack of well-preserved fossils has made it difficult to date the sediments accurately in geologic time, but it is possible to make tentative correlations between the Cananea sediments and the southeastern Arizona sections, based largely upon lithology and general position in the geologic column. It appears that sedimentation at Cananea and Bisbee may have been closely similar during Paleozoic time. Even such generalized correlations, however, may be subject to considerable modification in the future. The present study has led to the recognition of other problems of age and mineralization relationships in the Cananea district. Cananea is located in the north-central part of the state of Sonora, Mexico, at an elevation of 5270 ft. It is about 135 miles northeast of Hermosillo, the state capital, and 25 miles south of the international boundary. By road Cananea is 40 miles from the twin towns of Naco, Ariz., and Naco, Sonora, and about 50 miles from Bisbee, Ariz. It is served by the Nogales-Naco branch of the railroad, F.C. Pacifico, and is connected with Chihuahua and Mexico City by the Aeronaves airline. The headwaters of three rivers flowing to the Gulf of California are located in the Cananea Mountains: the San Pedro River, flowing to the north; the Sonora River, flowing south and west; and the Mag-dalena River, flowing west. Elenita Mountain, the highest point in the district, has an elevation of 8140 ft. The Cananea Mountains extend in a series of north-south to northwest-southeast spurs and ridges and are surrounded by gently sloping gravel plains. The mineralized area, lying across the southern and central parts of the range, is about 6 miles long and at most 2 miles wide. Elevations at the mines vary from 5300 ft at Cananea-Duluth mine at the southeast end of the district to between 6000 and 7000 ft at the west end of the mineralized area at Puertecitos-Elenita mines. Principal production has been from the intensely mineralized and altered area of Capote Basin in the central part of the district and the immediately surrounding area to the southeast. The district has produced over 2 billion lb of copper, substantial molybdenum, and minor amounts of lead, zinc, silver, and gold. Total production through 1949 is estimated at more than $300 million. In 1900 large-scale development was started at Cananea by W. C. Greene. Until World War II only high-grade ores were exploited; low-grade ores were extracted after the installation of a large concentrator in the early 1940's, and subsequent operations have been based upon mining and processing ores containing less than 1.0 pct copper from open-pit and underground workings. Mining and concentration of such low-grade ores, however, are made possible only by continued high copper prices, and active exploration for high-grade orebodies has been continued throughout the important mineralized areas. General Geology Study of the involved rock pattern at Cananea has indicated a complex geologic history for the district. Widespread alteration and mineralization have masked many of the salient features and have led to widely varying geologic interpretations over the years. Further work will probably disclose new information which will modify current beliefs. At Cananea a conformable series of sediments of probable Paleozoic age was deposited on an unknown basement. Following Paleozoic time there was an extended period of erosion common to many districts in the southwestern U. S., and there is no present evidence of marine sedimentation at Cananea after the Paleozoic. The eroded surface was eventually covered with a great thickness of extrusive volcanic rocks. The entire series of sediments and volcanic rocks was later intruded by a variety of deep-seated igneous rocks. These included the Cananea granite, the Cuitaca granodiorite, the El Torre syenite, the Tinaja diorite, the Campana diabase and gabbro and the Colorada rhyolite quartz porphyry. Faulting of early age, probably prior to the deposition of the volcanic rocks, may have been responsible for the present position of some of the intrusive rock masses. In the Capote mine on the third and fourth levels the northwest-striking Rick-etts fault zone, with apparent offset of about 800 ft, has been sealed by a dike-like mass of Cananea granite which gradually increases in size with depth. In lower levels of the mine the granite forms a large southeast-plunging mass generally following the course of the Ricketts zone. The granite is not known southeast of the Capote-Oversight mine areas and the Ricketts fault does not appear in the vol-canic~ southeast of Capote Basin, but several plugs of Colorada quartz porphyry cut the volcanics along the assumed general southeast trend of the Ricketts zone. Henry LOUIS, London, England (communication to the Secretary) : Prof. Richards's paper has impressed me as highly valuable. Without entering upon any discussion of it as careful and thorough as it deserves, I venture to mention one or two points which a perusal of it has recalled to my mind in connection with my own study and practice of ore-dressing. I always mentally divide jigging into two phases: 1. A particle at rest on the jig-bed is lifted and carried upwards by the rising current of water, at an increasing velocity, which tends to a maximum. When the upward current is stopped, the particle continues to rise with rapidly diminishing velocity until it comes to rest. This completes the first phase. 2. In the second phase, the particle falls from its position of rest with an increasing velocity which tends again to a maximum, and continues to fall until the rising current of water has reduced its velocity to zero. This completes the second phase. The second phase will evidently be greatly modified by the effect of suction, as Prof. Richards shows; but I do not see that his experiments very clearly imitate the action of the second phase. And the brief intervals at the end of each phase, when the mineral particle, by reason of its acquired velocity, is still moving, though in opposition to the water-current, yet remain to be investigated. I feel especially, in Prof. Richards's paper, a difficulty which I have felt with regard to all similar previous investigations, namely, that the experiments deal with particles falling a long distance, when the velocity becomes uniform. I question whether this uniform maximum velocity is attained in actual jigging-practice. If so, it is certainly for a comparatively very small proportion only of each stroke. It seems to me that an investigation like that of Prof. Richards, but confined to the first 6 or 8 inches of fall only, and carried out with suitably delicate recording-apparatus, is what we

A NOVEL practice in the bituminous coal industry is the accelerated method of burning coal to ash used in the laboratory of the Fidelity washery of the United Electric Coal Companies, Du Quoin, Ill. Development of this method has supplanted the tedious float-and-sink process for plant control at this plant. In normal operation the plant operators have available within thirty minutes the accurate ash percentage of the coal loaded in the railroad cars and can therefore make adjustments to maintain a practically uniform quality of washed coal, regardless of the variations in washery feed.

SPEED is essentiaI in this war program and it is hard to keep up with developments. When the title of this paper was chosen, the contemplated magnesium production for which plants were then under construction was some 200,000 tons of metal per year or sixty times the 3350-ton production in prewar 1939. A few- days later an analysis of the President's 185,000-plane pro-gram, incendiary bomb schedules, and the additional requirements of the Army. Navy and Maritime Commission made it apparent that a much greater amount of magnesium must be provided in 1943. The new figures are huge but the censor will not per-mit their disclosure.

IN this survey of the progressive development (of education for the mineral industries throughout the United States, the review of .the history of each school has usually been completed wherever it is first mentioned, but the history of the schools in the cities of the eastern seaboard was not carried beyond 1870. It is necessary now to cover what happened during the period of approximately the last quarter of the nineteenth century in several of the schools in the east. Philadelphia Of Philadelphia, it has been related in chapter 4 that the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania began offering a curriculum leading to the B.S. in mining in 1853; that the school did not prosper, and finally closed about 1890. The establishment of a Department of Mining, Arts, and Manufactures at the University of Pennsylvania in 1855-56 was also mentioned, but its history was not carried beyond 1860. In 1859 J. Peter Lesley was appointed professor of mining in the University of Pennsylvania. The son of a cabinetmaker, born in Philadelphia Sept. 17, 1819, he had taken his A.B. degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1838 and then secured a position on the Geological Survey of Pennsylvania under H. D. Rogers. When the Survey was discontinued, in 1841, he went to Princeton to study theology, was ordained a Presbyterian minister and followed that career until 1852, when the Pennsylvania, Geological Survey was again started and he rejoined its staff. He published "A Manual of Coal and its Topography" in 1856, and studied at the École des Mines, Paris, in 1856-57. He published an 800-page "Iron Manufactures Guide" the year that he was appointed to the staff at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1863-64 a College of Agriculture, Mines, Arts and the Mechanic Arts was established, but it was not a separate school

RECENTLY a prominent Brazilian' doctor wrote to an American friend: "I feel that cultural relations between the American and Brazilian people could be promoted in a very speedy and effective way by establishing contacts between men of the same professions. . . . A Brazilian mechanical engineer could be immediately interested in relations with American colleagues, even if he had never heard of Longfellow and was not interested in Stokowski's orchestra. . . . A large number of cultural ties could be established between specific groups of men who have already some common interest, and who, whenever they meet, can do something that naturally brings them closer, that is, `talk shop."' In appointing a committee on Inter-American Engineering Relations to cooperate with the Department of State in its program of fostering cultural relations with the other republics of this hemisphere, the American Engineering Council has taken a step which should lead to a greater sense of unity and fraternity among engineers of the Americas. That such unity and fraternity are part and parcel of the moral defense of the hemisphere is obvious. For years engineers of the United States have been traveling South and South-east to construct roads and bridges, dam rivers, harness waterfalls, build ports, install and operate mining equipment, and erect buildings and plants, often at the risk of life. Those in the teaching profession in this country have had as pupils a growing number of students from our neighboring republics whom they have sent back home trained in the most efficient engineering methods. In a sense, however, these relations with the other nations on this side of the globe have been haphazard and left to chance. Personal acquaintance among engineers has played its role but no organized attempt appears to have been made to take advantage of the natural relationship which geographical and historical factors should encourage.

FIFTEEN years ago Dr. Manning published a paper in "Petroleum Development and Technology" on '.Fundamental Research Relating to Petroleum." He tabulated for several industries "the proportion of their present success which can be fairly attributed to the application of information and processes obtained by scientific research," giving petroleum a score of 7 compared to 100 for the electrical and coal-tar industries. Today the petroleum industry as a whole and the producing groups both have raised their score beyond the majority and are climbing toward the top. Present practices are being developed both by fundamental research and the application of the research method in field operation.

The Mining Engineering Society of the State College of Washington, Pullman, Wash., has elected the following officers for this semester: F. MASON, President, WILLIAM WHITE, Vice-President,. L. E. TRAEGER, Secretary and Treasurer. The Society holds meetings every two weeks at which papers on mining and metallurgical topics are presented by students and members, of the faculty. At the meeting of Oct. 25, Prof. H. R. Robbins gave an interesting talk upon the Rankin Process for the treatment of base-metal ores. In this process the metals are extracted by the use of nitric acid, the acid -being recovered almost entirely. Prof. Robbins thinks the process has great possibilities, but it has not yet been worked on a commercial scale. The Missouri Mining Association, the student organization at the Missouri School of Mines, Rolla, Mo., has. elected the following officers for the ensuing year: L. W. EHLERS, President, H. A. MUCH the same story can be told for the lead industry for the year 1945 as for the three previous years. In response to inquiries as to new developments, invariably the answer has been, "No new developments-our men either too busy with the man-power problem or trying to get production out." Time and efforts of industry have been concentrated for the most part on war or readjustment problems. Now that V-E and V-1 day have passed, the lead industry can justly be proud of its record in World War II. As in previous wars, lead played an important role and one of its most spectacular uses was in the production of the atomic bomb. We read that the part lead played was rather obscure, but as a protective agent, lead played a most significant role. "Since the materials in the Pile Plant are intensely radioactive, all storage and handling must be done behind thick concrete walls or lead shields. The material is never seen and all operations are auto matically controlled by a foolproof remote control system especially designed for this purpose." (Chews. & Met., Sept. 1945.) ALTHOUGH most accidents occur through the A carelessness or misfortune of the workmen; that is no reason why we should not take all physical precautions practicable. The best way to approach the problem of mine safety is to acquire a personal feeling of responsibility for the accident and then plan how it might have been prevented had we known that it was to occur. A statistical analysis of the physical conditions contributory to accidents will give an indication of some of the methods or mechanisms that should be revised or safeguarded. The handling of rock or ore is a common source of minor injuries. Freedom from accident when mucking largely depends on the skill and care of the workman; this also is true, to a certain degree, to loading cars from chutes, but much can be done in the layout of chutes and their equipment to provide equal safety with less skill. Permanent stagings, or rigid units that may be easily assembled, should be provided so that the men handling the chute boards or gates and barring the jammed chunks will have a convenient safe footing for their operations. A stance to the side of the chute mouth is to one in front, because a man will not be liable to be struck by flying lumps or his bar, should it he caught in the mass, yet in many mines the workmen face the chute when loading a car. Fig. 1 shows the operation of a plank chute having special latches which support the chute boards in such manner that they may be conveniently dropped into place to stop the flow of ore.

THE case of Henry Cort comprises: (1) the nature of Cort's inventions;, (2) their value to England and to mankind,; (3) the remuneration received therefor by him or his family; and (4) the suitable permanent record and recognition of his services by the representatives of the art lie founded-a debt long over-due, and still unpaid. I. CORT'S INVENTIONS. Under this head, it is unnecessary here to enter into details. The facts have been repeatedly published, and a brief outline of them will be sufficient for my present purpose. . Henry Cort, born in 1740 at Lancaster, England, became a navy broker in. There was a notable decrease in drilling operations in 1940 in all of the Rocky Mountain states except Montana, where the two large fields on the Canadian border, Cut Bank and Kevin-Sunburst, were espe-cially active. The expanding markets for Montana natural gas made necessary the more intensive development of such fields as Rowdoin, Cedar Creek and Devon. While there were no important oil and gas discoveries in 1940 in any of the Rocky Mountain states, a few small pools were opened, which may constitute separate areas but may prove with later development to be extensions of old fields. Some of the old fields were extended and deeper pay zones were discovered in others. These have given the areas greatly increased oil reserves and therefore are just as important as the discovery of new fields. The more important of the developments in 1940 are given, by states, in the following paragraphs. Colorado Hiawatha Field, Moffat County.—The Mountain Fuel Supply Co. began the development at Hiawatha of its oil reserves, which were discovered in about 1929, and late in the summer oil began moving from the field by truck to the shipping point at Rock Springs, Wyoming. The Hiawatha field of northwestern Moffat County was discovered in 1927 by the Sormir Petroleum Co., with the completion of No. r Florence Wilson for 4,5,000,000 cu. ft. of gas a day from a Wasatch sand lens at 2200 it. In later development of the field, oil showings were reported in several wells but no development of this resource was undertaken until 1940, when a test of the oil possibilities was started with the release in April of a location for No. 5-A Wilson on the S\W. SW. NW. of sec. 23-1zN-1ooW., on the east side of the field. The Well had an initial production of 327 bbl. of oil a day pumping from three Wasatch (Tertiary) sands between 2005 and 2540 ft. It was drilled to 2562 ft., where the 65/8-in. casing was cemented and gun-perforated at 2005 to 2125 ft., 2260 to 2335 ft. and 2513 to 2540 ft. At the end of the year, this well was averaging zoo bbl. of oil per day, pumping. Two other wells were drilled for oil on Hiawatha during the summer—one a small well of 60 bbl. per day and the other a small gas well. Powder Wash Field, Moffat County.—The development of the Powder Wash field in northwestern Colorado was resumed in 1940 by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co., with the release of a location for No. 2-A Musser in the CWL.NW.SE. of sec. 4-1rN-97W. The Powder Wash field was discovered in 1931 by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co. and the discovery well, No. I Musser, on C.NW. of sec. 5-IIN-97W., was completed at 2152 ft. in the Hiawatha member of the nonmarine Wasatch for-mation for an open flow of 34,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day under a natural pressure of 685 lb. per sq. inch. Oil was discovered in the Powder Wash field on Nov. 26, 1936, in the company's No. I Carl Allen on the NE.SW.SE. of sec. 32-12N-97W. The oil production was

This paper presents the historical trend and de- fines the causes of drilling cost escalation in the Gulf of Mexico during the 1970's. The three major components of escalation are: 1) inflation, 2) supply-demand imbalance (demand pull) and 3) decreases in drilling efficiency. The decade was divided into three periods. During each period one component of escalation was responsible for most of the rise in costs. From 1970 through 1973 only inflation pushed costs upward. During 1974 and 1975 a supply- demand imbalance caused most of the escalation. Since 1975, decreases in drilling efficiency have produced the major component of escalation. During any one year or period of years, the sum of the three components will give the total escalation rate. The reasons why different components contribute more toward escalation during certain years than others are shown by following the timing of oil and gas price increases, the overall quality of the acreage offered each year in offshore lease sales and the resulting drilling activity.

The production of lightweight aggregates in Oregon is a new industry, and, like all new enterprises, it is suffering from growing pains characterized by numerous, small operations some of which flourish for a short time and then cease altogether. Norinally all industrial mineral products are produced in a highly competitive atmosphere. At the present time this condition does not exist to a very marked degree in the state because as yet producers have not saturated the constantly expanding market. This paper has been prepared with the intention of outlining very briefly the current status of the various products now heing used as lightweight aggregates in Oregon. The present piche will surely change, perhaps quite radically within even a short space of time. Lightweight Aggregates Used in the Northwest PUMICE Interest in Oregon pumice is not new. Deposits are abundant. Successful development, however, dates only from 1946. During 1948 a total of nine operations was engaged in full or part-time production of aggregate. The postwar building boom and increased public consciousness regarding the value of insulation are the immediate reasons behind the current development. Just how firmly this production of pumice aggregate may be established is something which cannot be foretold at the present time. Much will depend upon how successfully the pumice aggregate construction already installed stands the test of time. Some fine pumice aggregate products have been made and it seems probable that because of its unique properties a certain demand for pumice aggregate will continue in the future. Fire-proof, rodent-proof, decay-resistant properties supplement the lightness in weight and insulation properties of pumice aggregate products in rendering them particularly ideal for many types of construction. In addition there has been fabrication in the form of reinforced fence posts, street markers, and similar products of a specialized-product nature and these are not to be overlooked in terms of future production. Also pertinent to how soundlj pumice aggregate production is established will be possible future competition with other lightweight aggregates. However, this situation will be governed largely by competitive costs of production and marketing. For its present use, which is almost exclusively limited to the manufacturing of building blocks, the market for Oregon pumice aggregate has been extended from the mining area around Rend and Chemult to points as far distant as San Francisco and Seattle. Naturally enough the bulk of the production goes to the Portland and eastern Oregon consumers. Shipments are made by both rail and truck. Early in 1947 the State Department of Geology and Mineral Industries made a canvass of all pumice producers in the state. The production for 1956 amounted to 26,614 cu yd and was valued at $13,649 at the plants. The United States Bureau of Mines estimates the production for 1947 as 33,240 short tons valued at $111,380. This is roughly 65,000 cu yd. No data are available for the 1948 production but it is understood to exceed that for 1947. The Oregon pumice occurrences originated largely from the eruption of Mount Mazama, the name of the formerly active volcano and the location of Crater Lake. Other lesser volcanoes throughout the area contributed to the present occurrences, however, and it has been estimated by Moore' that the pumice deposits cover an area of some 3500 square miles. This area lies east of Crater Lake between Bend and Klamath Falls and embraces the southern portion of Deschutes County, the northern part of Klamath County, and the northwest corner of Lake County. Thickness of the pumice ranges from thin skims to local thicknesses of as much as 30 to 40 ft. Fragment size also varies greatly. Any attempt to describe the situation by giving screen analyses would be confusing because of the wide variations to be found in all area of this size. The picture can best be summed up by stating that places showing great variations in fragment size can be found if a search for extremes is made. For mining purposes in connection with aggregate production, it call be stated that miles and miles of pumice exist in which the fragrnent sizes range from an inch or so downward. The usual color of the pumice is a light gray to off-white. A typical pumice analysis shows a silica content of about 69 pct, alumina 15 pct, and sodium oxide about 5 pct. Potash, lime, and water are the next three most abundant constituents, running just a little over 2 pct each. Iron oxides are fairly constant at 2.75 pct. Titanium, manganese, magnesium, and phosphorus occur in amounts of less than 1 pct. All of the foregoing substances are combined as a glass exhibiting cellular structure. The weight of crushed but otherwise pit-run (undried) pumice runs around 1100 Ib per cu yd according to figures furnished by various producers. The pottery department has been aptly described as the "heart of the zinc plant," md every operator of a horizontal-retort plant is acquainted with the fact that good retort practice is the keystone of the smelting process. Since retorts and condensers are clay products, it is obvious that improvements in other branches of the ceramic industry should be observed for possible adoption in the pottery process for zinc smelting. Deaeration of clay bodies is one of the improvements that have become fully, established in many brick and pottery plants. Our investigation of a number of these installations always yielded the same answer—improved practice. Improvement in workability, elimination of laminations, less porosity, greater wet and dry strength, were among the claims put forth for this process. All of these features are exceedingly desirable characteristics in the manufacture of a zinc retort. A preliminary test, which involved truck transportation of deaired slugs over a relatively long distance, did show the value of many of these characteristics in forming the retort. Results from the standpoint of , longer retort life in the smelting furnace were not outstanding. The idea lay dormant for several years but was revived again in 1940, when it was decided to make whatever changes were necessary in the equipment for pottery manufacture to fully demonstrate the process. A number of the manu- facturers of machinery for clay work were asked to submit proposals, and the plan finally adopted was extremely simple and economical. Machine FOR DeaeRRATING Selection of the ''Straight-line'' principle for conversion of the "Wettengel" pug mill to a ''vacuum-extrusion" machine preserved some usable parts of the original equipment, such as the drive mechanism, and main shaft. The converted machine consists of a feed hopper, a compression and shredding zone, a vacuum chamber, and an extrusion barrel, as shown in Fig. I. In operation the clay mix travels from the feed hopper into the compression zone, where it is compressed and finally forced around the tapered cone into the vacuum chamber. As it enters this chamber the clay body is shredded into thin plates, for exFosure to the vacuum. The shredder consists of a hub mounted on the main shaft, to which are bolted segmental sections, each of which carries shredder knives. The compression zone and extrusion barrel function as seals for the vacuum chamber and the shredded clay mix is agitated thoroughly during its exposure to the vacuum. A vacuum pump, equipped with a 3-hp. motor, is attached to this chamber, and maintains 25 to 26 in. vacuum during operation of the mill.
