A particle-bubble collision model was used to investigate the minimum recovery zone height, H(r,min) required for flotation columns. The criterion used to define H(r,min) is that height which gives unit collision probability. It is shown that H(r,min) is determined by particle and bubble size, gas hold-up and bubble-bubble interaction. Under typical operating conditions, for flotation of particles less that 10 micrometres in size H(r,min) is greater than 10 m, but it reduces to less than 1 m for particles greater than 100 micrometres

The Brunswick Mine Diesel Particulate Filter Study was one of several research projects initiated by the Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program (DEEP). The study was carried out at Noranda?s Brunswick Mine in Bathurst, New Brunswick by Noranda Technology Centre and Brunswick Mine personnel with the collaboration of Natural Resources Canada - Canada Centre for Minerals and Energy Technology (CANMET), National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Andreas Mayer of VERT, and diesel particulate filter (DPF) system suppliers. The study began in early 2000. Field evaluations continued for 20 months. The final report?authored by Sean McGinn?was submitted to DEEP in the Autumn of 2003.

A computer program has been developed by Newmont Exploration to convert mineralogic data by XRD into rock type and ore type classifications. This method has proven useful in identifying lithology from cuttings samples, where percussion drilling was an alternative to expensive core drilling. Computer printouts of rock type and ore type identifications can be generated simultaneously with mineralogic analyses, resulting in a considerable time savings in manual calculation. XRD-computer logging was first applied to the Carlin mine in north central Nevada, and later to the Maggie Creek and Gold Quarry gold deposits, southeast of the Carlin mine. Impure Paleozoic limestones of the "lower plate" Roberts Mountain Formation and the "upper plate" transitional facies have been decarbonatized to altered siltstones and shaley units along vertical faults and permeable stratiform horizons. Advanced stages of decarbonatization were accompanied by silicification. Quantitative XRD data are initially sorted into principal rock type units (limestones, siltstones, dolostones, shales) based on major mineralogic components (calcite, quartz, dolomite, clays). On the basis of relative amounts of less major constituents, descriptive subclassifications (dolomitic limestones, dolomitic siltstones, argillaceous cherts) are made. XRD lithologic data provide assistance in correlating lithologic units, and delineating favorable replacement horizons associated with gold mineralization.

Explosive properties are typically summarised on manufacturers’ technical data sheets. The values most commonly referred to are the density of the explosive, the energy it is expected to release and its velocity of detonation (VOD). This information is provided so that blasting engineers can make a considered selection of the most appropriate product for a particular blasting application. As an example, a lower VOD and energy product is better suited to blasting in soft, weathered material. In contrast, blasting hard, competent material generally requires a higher energy product which is usually characterised by higher VOD and energy.A review of the technical information supplied by manufacturers shows a wide range of methods of reporting both VOD and energy. A meaningful comparison between products from different suppliers is almost impossible to achieve based on these data. For a similar product, one supplier may have a VOD range of 2800–5800 m/s and a relative bulk strength of 1.34 while a corresponding product from another supplier is quoted with a VOD range of 3100–6300 m/s and a relative bulk strength of 192. In the end, the user has to rely on the level of confidence available from their experience using a certain type of explosive in the type of rock to be blasted at that mine.This paper reviews some of the technical and supporting information that is freely available in the literature and attempts to provide some clarity as to what the numbers that are reported actually mean for the end user. Volume I of this report described the demonstration of cross-ridge mountaintop coal mining. This document, Volume II, is intended for use as a supporting document to Volume I. This report describes the MATHMINE Mine Simulation System, a modularized software system used to support the demonstration of cross-ridge Mountaintop coal mining. The MATHMINE Mine Simulation System was used to generate mine plans for coal extraction at lowest cost. The functional details, data requirements and output of the software system are detailed here. The computer program was written in FORTRAN. One module which generates resource location data required the use of SAS?.

Beginning on June 11, 2007, as many as 36, kindergarten-to-grade-12 (K-12) teachers will participate in a program designed to educate them all about the mining industry. The 39th Annual A Total Concept of the Mining Industry – All About Mining, will be conducted by the Colorado Mining Association Education Foundation, Inc. (CMAEF) and the Office of Special Programs and Continuing Education (SPACE) at the Colorado School of Mines. This flagship program includes four intensive weeks at the Colorado School of Mines. During that time, more than 75 volunteer lecturers will “educate the educators” about mining and its importance to the United States and the world. During the learning process associated with obtaining a basic understanding of mining and all its aspects, the teachers will be hosted by hundreds of other industry professionals at 10 Colorado mining operations. Also visited will be a government earthquake center, a museum of mining and industry, an earth mechanics laboratory, a metallurgical research center, a metallurgical concentrator, an electric power plant and a steel mill. Questions before, during and after visits will be answered by another select group of volunteers who will travel with the teachers to the various sites.

A small static bed was used to study the thermal cycles required for the heat hardening of pellets based on synthetic magnetite concentrates and a naturally fine hematite. This apparatus can be employed to yield broad process data for the design of a recuperative strand system operating on the magnetite concentrates.Various alternatives are given for a process to heat harden the hematite ore but a preference is given to the production of a self fluxing pellet. Bond types and general mineralogical structures are interpreted against the optimum firing cycle necessary to produce a defined quality of pellet.INTRODUCTIONThe work reported in this paper extends that on the "Heat Hardening of Artificial Magnetite Pellets", which was described at the International Symposium on Agglomeration, sponsored by the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers at Philadelphia, U.S.A. in April 1961. Whereas that work was of a more basic nature, serving to illustrate the suitability of artificial magnetites with various admixtures, to the application of heat hardened pellets, on this occasion the aim is to illustrate the procedures which were used to establish the dimensions of commercial recuperative strands for Australian raw materials.The nature of the pellet feed, Le. relatively uniform spheres of + i in.-Yi6 in. diameter, makes it possible to use small scale static pots for test work. The goal of the U.S. Bureau of Mines diesel engine research program is to reduce exhaust emissions from diesel-powered equipment used in underground mines. This research has led to significant advances in aerosol measurement and to the development of more effective emission controls. This Information Circular contains reports of some of the presentations made at the Bureau's Information and Technology Transfer Seminar on Diesels in Underground Mines given in Minneapolis, MN, on September 29-30, 1992. The seminar emphasized the measurement and control of diesel particulate matter emissions. Topics covered include a discussion of the health issues associated with the use of diesel equipment underground, an overview of regulations, measurement techniques for diesel exhaust aerosol, levels of diesel exhaust pollutants found in mines, and modern emission controls. An appendix is included that contains a report describing the capabilities of the Bureau's diesel emissions research laboratory, two papers describing the effects of engine maintenance or: emissions, a paper describing the monitoring of carbon dioxide in mine air as an indicator of air quality, a glossary, and a list of abbreviations and acronyms.

L?exploitation rentable des gisements de type filonien constitue un problème important dans le contexte actuel de l?industrie minière québécoise. Les études effectuées depuis 1994 ont indiqué, que la technologie d?abattage mécanique utilisant l?outil hydraulique appelé « éclateur radial-axial » constitue une alternative intéressante par rapport aux méthodes conventionnelles par le forage et sautage. Les essais du prototype de l?éclateur ont prouvé qu?il est en mesure d?abattre les roches dures dans un environnement minier, mais sa performance dans les termes de masse du roc abattu dans une unité de temps a soulevé certaines doutes. Pour cette raison, une étude de préfaisabilité de l?éclatage en tant qu?une technologie d?excavation souterraine a été réalisée. Cet article présente quelques résultats des travaux effectués dans le cadre du contrat octroyé à l?Université Laval par le Ministère des ressources naturelles du Québec. Leur objectif principal consistait à comparer, pour les conditions des gisements filoniens, la productivité et les coûts des méthodes d?exploitation souterraine utilisant l?éclatage par rapport à celles conventionnelles. Deux variantes proposées de cette méthode ont été comparées avec la méthode conventionnelle sur le plan du coût (par tonne de minerai) et de la teneur de coupure de minerai d'or. Les études ont démontré que l?application de l?éclatage représente un potentiel de réduire ce coût, surtout dans les situations où l?abattage sélectif pourrait avoir lieu. Pour le cas de base on a trouvé, qu?il serait possible de réduire la teneur de coupure par la marge d?environ 16 ? 26%. Toutefois, les études de sensibilité ont démontré, que le coût dépend de façon important de la productivité d?éclatage, qui, pour sa part, varie beaucoup en fonction de paramètres du massif rocheux devant être abattu.

This contract final report summarizes the design, fabrication and testing of canopy air curtain devices under Bureau of Mines Contract H0232067. The canopy air curtain device is designed to reduce the level of respirable dust exposure to a continuous mining machine operator while having a minimum effect on operator safety, mobility and comfort and being compatible with mining equipment. This contract was devoted to the development of a device which utilizes an invisible curtain of air to envelope a mining machine operator's breathing zone with filtered air to provide respiratory protection. Various concepts were evaluated by means of laboratory tests. One concept was selected and was tested on various mining machines at underground sites by means of MSA personal samplers. The canopy air curtain was found to be effective. The percent reductions over the ambient dust concentrations were about 30 to 75 percent depending on the amount of time the operator spent under the air curtain. At one test site, the device enabled the mining machine to operate within compliance. Donaldson Company is presently working on the commercial production of the device.

Sufficient time has elapsed since the enactment of the amendments to the mining legislation in 1981 to enable an examination to be made of the way in which the licensing system operates in practice. One of the most important decisions in resource management in New Zealand is whether or not rights of access to the resource should be conferred by the Crown upon an appropriate private sector participant. The licensing system is the means for allocating these rights of access. The manner in which the licensing system is administered, therefore, is crucial to natural resource management in New Zealand. What is the mining licensing system in New Zealand designed to achieve? This simple question admits of no easy answer. Is it the identification and development of the mineral resources of New Zealand? Are these objectives tempered by issues of resource conservation and environmental protection? Is a balance to be achieved among these competing factors? Does the legislation contain any priorities? Does the system respond in an ad hoc manner to particular facts and circumstances or does it operate within a more predictable framework? To what extent are decisions made on access to minerals with reference to the development or conservation of other resources? These questions may be summarised in the title to this paper which poses the question whether mining licences are instruments for resource management.

At LKAB's plants in Lappland, Sweden, sintered pellets are manu-factured according to three different industrial processes, viz. shaft furnace at Malmberget, straight-grate at Kiruna and grate-kiln at Svappavaara. At present the total annual capacity amounts to 4.7 million tons. However, since it has been decided to erect a new straight-grate plant (2.5 million tons) at Malmberget, and because of the decision to extend and rebuild the existing plants, it is estimated that the annual capacity will be increased to somewhat over 8 million tons by 1973. The great majority of the pellets produced is exported. They are thus reloaded several times and generally speaking roughly handled, resulting in larger or smaller product losses on arrival at the point of use. It is there-fore of great economical interest to have a good control over the transport strength of the pellets by appropriate quality testing at the point of production. In addition to good transport strength, further demands are ob-viously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The blast furnace burden must maintain a good permeability for the gas. The pellets must thus have a favourable size distribution and must not be so weakened by reduction that they disintegrate under the stresses and clog the blast furnace shaft. Furthermore, the burden must have good reducibility. An increase of the rate of reduction can obviously mean increased blast furnace capacity and reduced coke consumption. In order to optimise the properties of the pellets in these respects, the producer must also be thoroughly familiar with their behaviour during reduction, particularly as the customer's interest in the reduction properties of the pellets' has increased over the last few years. Up to now the only quality demands the customer has made have generally had to do with the cold strength and the screen analysis. Thus a quality control of in addition to good transport strength, further demands are obviously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The blast furnace burden must maintain a good permeability for the gas. To present some idea as to how the Bureau of Mines may most effectively serve mining, it is necessary that we make some resume of its pact accomplishments in order to determine what, if any, changes will be of greatest service to the industry and to the nation. There are a great many times in life when one begins to wonder whether or not Emerson, in his famous epigram about "mousetraps" and "beaten paths" and "final recognition of intrinsic worth", took into account the item of time. The intrinsic value of any movement, of any work, of any accomplishment will ultimately be recognized, of that there is no doubt, but may a man in history has gone to his end in martyrdom because the world was slow in the acknowledgement of the true excellence of his worth, and this is likewise true of institutions.

"The rapid growth of the mining industry in Canada necessitates a reevaluation of existing mining surveying techniques and the development of new methods. In this connection, the Department of Surveying Engineering at the University of New Brunswick initiated a research program, and the major points of investigation conducted to date are as follows: 1. Based on practical experience and theoretical studies, all factors influencing classical shaft-plumbing procedures were analyzed. Refined methods were developed to increase accuracy. 2. The performance of electronic and optical distance-measuring instruments in underground conditions were investigated. In this connection, test measurements were made in various mines, employing four types of Tellurometers, two models of Geodimeters and a proto-type optical range-finder. 3. Tests were conducted and methods developed for the mapping of large underground chambers by photo-grammetric means. The aforementioned points are discussed at some length in the paper. The authors have also indicated areas where further research is needed and suggested ways and means to improve and modernize mining surveying as a whole throughout Canada."

In 1979 our company undertook the project of infra-structural work of White Swan Lake Hotel, (International class ) Guangzhou. Visit to the site showed that it was situated at the riverside, covering an area of 54,000 M2 with 30,000 M2 of which reclaimed from Pearl River. The material used for reclamation was black sand which was dredged from the nearby riverbed. The sand had the properties of high permeability and very low internal friction. The basement of the building was 6.2 m below ground level and 3 m lower than the riverbed. Apart from the pile foundation, a diaphragm wall was to be constructed prior to the commencement of excavation work for basement. A feasibility study was carried out to determine the method of construction which would maximize utilization of the plants and equipment that were available in the execution of the aforesaid foundation works. This report concerns only the construction of the diaphragm wall and the performance of the plants employed. A detailed delineation of the construction method is herein discussed
