Department of Pathology, British Post-graduate Medical School, London:The experiments here recorded were devised and carried -out during the last two years in an attempt to corroborate the important work of Denny, Robson and Irwin (1939) in which they found that experimental silicosis could be prevented by means of metallic aluminum. By causing rabbits to inhale powdered quartz for several months they induced experimental silicosis. These animals then served as controls for comparison with another group which were dusted with a mixture of quartz and aluminum. In the second group silicosis failed to develop.Our experimental procedure was somewhat different. We resorted to intratracheal insufflation instead of simple inhalation, and we used rats instead of rabbits: otherwise the essential features of the original experiments were carefully duplicated.EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES.A single dose of dust was delivered into the lungs of each animal. The dust was suspended in a fluid medium and injected by means of a syringe directly into the trachea in known quantity (technique of Kettle and Hilton, 1932). The suspensions were autoclaved before use and were injected with aseptic precautions. Having had a long experience of this technique we employed it with confidence and usually secured a fairly uniform dispersal of dust throughout both lungs. To carry out injections successfully one requires, above all, an even suspension of dust which will flow smoothly and quickly from the syringe. This is not difficult in the case of quartz, for, though it tends to settle out rather quickly, this can be avoided by constantly agitating the suspension. The syringe containing the inoculum may be shaken gently right up to the moment of injection and then emptied quickly to prevent sedimentation. Powdered aluminum is more difficult to handle, for the particles tend to flocculate and are not readily made to disperse evenly in saline, even by violent shaking. For this reason an emulsifying agent may be used to advantage, provided it does not complicate the experiment, a point to be mentioned again presently.THE EXPERIMENTSExperiments with quartz alone: Extensive silicotic lesions were produced in 23 out of 26 rats by the administration of pure quartz dust in doses of from 50 to 200 mg. per rat. The dust was so finely pulverised that the particles averaged about 1-p. in size: none was larger than 5 p. and 99 per cent. were under 2.5 p.Eight of these animals survived for seven months and were then killed...

"Niobec has been using vibrating screens and screw classifiers as a double stage classification in its grinding circuit since the very beginning of its operation in St-Honoré. Most of the other mineral processing plants around the world uses cyclones as the classification device in their grinding circuit. The difference between these two methods are well known in terms of capital cost and grinding efficiency but the differences in terms of the impact on the downstream processing stages are a lot harder to predict and are case specific. In the interest of lowering the capital cost of a future expansion project, Niobec decided to test the cyclones in its actual grinding circuit and evaluate their impact on the recovery of the downstream processing stages as well as the operating cost of the mill. We switched between cyclones and screens for 8 month in 2013 and early 2014 and we are now operating only with cyclones since march 2014.INTRODUCTIONThe Niobec mine and concentrator were built in the mid 70’s and at that time, the mill was processing 1 500 tons per day. Over the years, many expansion projects have brought the plant to 7 000 tons per day. Throughout the initial concentrator design and commissioning, screens have been chosen over cyclones because of their higher classification efficiency which is known to reduce variability and limit the fine generation especially due to a high undersize classification efficiency. Just like many other plants, fine particle generation is a major problem at Niobec because of its negative effect on downstream processing stages. In the interest of lowering the capital cost of a future expansion project, Niobec’s engineering team decided, 35 years later, to test the cyclones in its actual grinding circuit and evaluate their actual impact on the final recovery and the operating cost of the mill.The grinding circuit is separated in two lines which will be called Circuit #1 and Circuit #2 along this paper. Circuit #1 is, as you can see in Figure 1, composed of a rod mill and two parallel ball mills in closed circuit with screens and screw classifiers. The screens oversize are sent to the screw classifiers while the undersize are sent to the next processing stage. The screw classifiers overflow are both sent back to the pump box while their oversize streams return in their corresponding ball mills for further grinding. Circuit #2 is, as you can see in Figure 1, quite the same as Circuit #1 except it has only one set of screw classifier and ball mill. Figure 1 also shows the modification in arrangement each circuits went through to integrate the new cyclones. One of the ball mills in Circuit #1 now appears dotted because it can still be used but is not now"

Dynamic rock anchors are interior fixtures developed by the author which promise to be a revolutionary development in the field of ground control. The fixtures are designed to be placed in the ground with modern roof bolting equipment, such as the type used in the American coal mining industry. They are composed of a plastic form- able anchor tube which serves to fasten a buttress deformed rod which is thrust and turned into the plastic and in turn clamps the roof plate to the rock surface. Plastic tubes 10 to 16 inches in length provide sufficient anchorage to exceed the yield strength of steel rods 5/8, 3/4 or' 7/8 inches in diameter. This paper presents field testing and early work done on the device over the last seven years. Results of pull tests, creep tests, laboratory testing in concrete, and field testing under natural rock conditions demonstrate the uniqueness and effectiveness of this new support system. A second development which uses the dynamic rock anchor in conjunction with a resin cartridge to provide a stiffer anchorage system is also discussed. These products will be manufactured and marketed by Ingerso-11-Rand Co. under the trademark of DYNA-ROK and DYNA-ROK PLUS anchors.

The MineSight Schedule Optimizer (MSSO) is a new production scheduling tool developed by Mintec, Inc. using mixed integer linear programming (MILP) techniques. This tool was developed to solve the short- and medium-term schedule problems for surface and underground mining operations that involve multiple mining areas, multiple processes, multiple destinations and blending requirements. MSSO finds the optimum schedule in each period that achieves the objective while satisfying comprehensive product quality and quantity requirements as well as physical and technical constraints. Using the MineSight Planning Database (MSPD) as a central data hub, MSSO seamlessly works with MineSight 3-D (MS3D) block models and third-party data, MineSight Interactive Planner (MSIP), MineSight Haulage (MSHaulage) and MineSight Activity Planner (MSAP) to prepare data, formulate MILP models, calculate, report, fine-tune, save and visualize schedules. This paper presents the features and capabilities of MSSO. A case study is also given to demonstrate the applications of this new tool.

Kidd Mine in Northern Ontario is now producing from Stage 1 of the Mine D expansion project ? mining between 2100 m and 2700 m below surface. Planning for Stage 2 of the Mine D project is already well advanced and will see the mine extended potentially to 3100 m below the surface. To ensure adequate ventilation is maintained at such depths, two large axial fans have been installed on the 6000 Level (1800 m below surface) as exhaust booster fans to operate in series with the surface exhaust fans. The Kidd Mine 6000 Level Booster Fans are a unique installation with unique and often unexpected challenges. These challenges have been met and attacked through the combined efforts of mine and fan manufacturer personnel with a common focus.

Before presenting this address I desire to express my appreciation of the honour which has been conferred on me by my election as iPresident of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. At this stage it might not be out of place to recall that Broken Hill was the birthplace of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, originally formed as the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers in 1893.In selecting for my address the topic of "The Broken Hill Mining Industry and its Contribution to the Economy of Australia" I realise it is impossible to cover fully every aspect of the nation's economy which owes all or part of its origin to the Broken Hill field. Nevertheless, I feel that some attempt should be made to give credit to the Broken Hill mining industry for its part in the progress which Australia has made over the past seventy years.. If we care to reflect for a moment it soon becomes apparent that, not only is the Broken Hill mining industry an important producer of base metals for domestic and overseas consumption, but its profits have provided the means whereby many of Australia's leading secondary industries have been established or built up. Examples which come to mind are the founding of the iron and steel industry by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company; the establishment of plants at Port Pirie in South Australia, and at Risdon in Tasmania, for the production of metallic lead and zinc; and also at Port Kembla for the smelting of copper ores. De Beers? Finsch diamond mine began operation in the 1960s as a surface project using the latest technology available. During the 1990s, the operation, located about 160 km (100 miles) west of Kimberley, South Africa, began its move as an underground mine. The earlier stages (Blocks 1, 2 and 3) of underground work at Finsch used open stope mining methods, also using the latest in technology. The mine began developing Block 4 in 2004. How-ever, studies on this level showed that block caving was a more efficient mining method than open stoping. It was during those studies that De Beers determined that Block 4 would be a good candidate for testing Sandvik?s automated truck haulage technology.

The Cretaceous limestone wells of the Mara/Maru-caibo Dist. of Venezuela are extremely prolific producers. To maintain production on cessation of natural flow, large scale gas-lift operations were commenced involving high production rates on caring Flow. For the design of these gas-lift installations it was essential to have some knowledge of the pressure gradients involved in casing flow, so that the required injection pressures, optimum gas injection raws, etc., could be forecast. This paper presents a method of calculating these annular pressure gradients. Basically the method makes use of an energy balance equation coupled with an empirical energy loss factor derived from field data. The calculations have been put in a form suitable for "punch card-type" calculating machines. A set of gradient curves for Mara/Maracaibo conditions covering flow rates up to 12,000 B/D, and GOR's of 500 to 2,000 cu fd/bbl is presented. From these curves the flowing BHP can be predicted from surface data and the vertical pow performance under varying conditions of gas injection can be estimated. The method has been applied to La Paz and Mam gas-lift operations for over three years and has given consistently accurate results. INTRODUCTION The Cretaceous limestone fields of the Mara/Maracaibo area in Venezuela are characterized by the presence of widely distributed fissure systems. Under these conditions individual wells frequently have extremely high potentials and such wells are generally flowed on the casing-tubing annulus in order to reduce the pressure loss in vertical flow. To maintain production on cessation of natural flow, an extensive gas-lift system was planned. As a first approach to this gas-lift design problem, an attempt was made to construct a set of empirical flowing gradient curves from the available subsurface pressure data. Such a method has been used successfully for tubing-flow conditions in California by Gilbert'. Unfortunately, the empirical construction of casing-flow gradient curves presents additional difficulties, as pres- sure bombs cannot bc run in the casing-tubing annulus against high rates of flow. Thus, the Full flowing gradients cannot be defined by actual measurement and the best that can be done is to obtain spot pressures at the tubing shoe. Under these conditions a vast accumulation of BHP data is required to construct a set of gradients. To the La Paz and Mara fields the majority of the available flowing pressure measurements fall into a relatively narrow GOR range, in the neighborhood of the solution ratio. While there appeared to be reasonable prospects of constructing gradient curves for this limited range, measurements at higher GOR's, which were of major interest for gas-lift operations, were relatively few and the prospects of constructing empirical curves cor~spondingly remote. As an alternative approach, the possibilities of a mathematical analysis of vertical flow conditions were investigated. May and Laird2fV n 1934 presented an excellent analysis of the vertical-flow conditions in the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co.'s fields. Their analysis was based on an energy-balance equation and calculated the losses due to kinetic energy, friction and slippage separately. By combining these losses with the total calculated available energy, the required depth-pressure traverse could be deduced. On applying the method to La Paz conditions, good results were obtained for tubing flow at high tubing-head pressures. However, for lower wellhead pressures (300 psi and under) the discrepancy between calculated and measured values increased appreciably. It was considered that this was probably due to energy losses caused by slippage or liquid hang-up in a continuous gas phase, for which it was difficult to visualize any analytical approach. In 1952 Poettmann and Carpenter4 presented a method of pressure gradient calculation which, while based on an energy-balance equation similar to that employed by May and Laird, made no attempt to evaluate the various components making up the total energy loss resulting from irreversibilities of flowing fluids. Instead, they proposed a method of analysis which assumed that all significant losses for multiphase flow could be correlated in a form similar to that of the Fanning equation for frictional losses in single-phase flow. They then derived an empirical relationship linking measurable field data with a factor which, when applied to the standard form of the Fanning equation, would enable the energy losses to be determined. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe una manera de cuantificar dicha deformación a través del monitoreo de convergencias, donde se emplea un simple extensómetro de cinta manual y asímediante una análisis estadístico, seleccionar estaciones de convergencia por rangos de mediciones.

Stimulated by 4 years of continuous economic growth without inflation, demand for energy in the United States reached an alltime high in 1964. Total value of production of goods and services (gross national product--GNP) for the year was $629 billion, an increase of 6.8 percent from 1963. Allowing for price changes based on 1958 dollars, the gain in real terms was 5 percent. In 1964 the Federal Reserve Board Index of Industrial Production stood at 132, a rise of 6.2 percent. With the impetus provided by personal income and corporate tax reductions during the year, aggregate wages, profits, and consumption reached record levels. Even the persistent balance of payments problem improved. Against this background the national consumption of commercial energy increased 4.2 percent. Energy needs continued to be met largely from domestic resources with imports, mainly crude petroleum and refined petroleum products, accounting for but 7 percent of the total. Mineral energy resources, namely gas, coal, and petroleum, contributed 96 percent of the input of energy into the economy during the year. The remaining 4 percent came from hydropower and nuclear power.

"Gold gravity recovery circuits utilizing enhanced gravity separators have become an integral part of many of the modern gold processing plants. Thus, efforts to improve the operating efficiency have been a topic of interest for metallurgists for many years. As part of this endeavour, a methodology to estimate the portion of gold in the ore that could be recovered by gravity separation (gravity recoverable gold or GRG) was developed at McGill University. It has been reported in the literature that the gold content estimated with this methodology is the theoretical maximum that is available for gravity recovery that could only be approached but never achieved. A comparison of GRG recovery obtained in the laboratory with the actual recovery in the plant shows that plants recover between one-third to two-thirds of the value predicted by the laboratory test.Research conducted at COREM shows that particle shape transformation during grinding is a major cause of the discrepancy (even though the bleed percent processed, the quality of cyclone classification and the operating conditions of the gravity separator also contribute to the difference). To analyze the gold particle shapes and their deportment, samples were collected from different streams of a grinding-gravity circuit in a gold plant and compared to a concentrate sample from the standard GRG test. A particle characterization methodology based on gold morphology was developed. GRG mapping in a conventional grinding-gravity circuit and the transformation of GRG into non-GRG, as mainly explained by gold particle reshaping, will be discussed. The knowledge gained from the shape analysis will be used to develop shape distributions and partition curves for the classification of shapes.INTRODUCTIONGravity concentration using centrifugal concentrators has gained increasing popularity since the invention of the enhanced gravity concentrators in the nineteen eighties. Among these, the semicontinuous centrifugal gravity concentrators are most commonly used for recovering gold and platinum group minerals (PGM) from grinding circuit streams. The benefits of gold gravity recovery are now well understood and the acceptance by the mining industry is overwhelming. The occurrence of reasonable amounts of gravity recoverable gold (GRG) in an ore prompts gold mills to install gravity circuits. Thus, the increased use of gravity concentration has necessitated a better understanding of the behavior of gold in grinding circuits and of the factors affecting the performance of the gravity concentrator (Laplante et al., 1995). Due to its high density (19.3 g/cm3 when pure) and malleability properties, gold tends to accumulate in circulating streams making it attractive for gravity recovery. The gravity recovery units are typically installed on a bleed stream of the cyclone underflow, mill discharge or cyclone feed."

For practical purposes of the use of information resources in the field of geomechanics and mine surveying with accepted mining technology in mines, the authors have developed the packaged software programs of the survey-geomechanical information system with database objects of mine field. This system enables to execute the graphical representation of workings layout in preset scale, axonometric projection, the zones of higher ground pressure: program packages for calculations of rock pressure manifestations and for selection of suitable support facilities for the permanent, development and active workings and vertical shafts based on the information resources of the State Research Institute of Mining Geomechanics & Mine Surveying (VNIMI). The program packages are applied at coal mines in Russia and in Kazakhstan. The profitable operation of coal mines can be reached only by the combined optimal engineering decisions in mine working's laying-out and their reliability and safety at the stages of their designing and exploitation, and with minimal harm of the environment as well. This problem is being complicated by the fact that today the mining-practicing engineers and designers are ordinarily facing the problem " of an information barrier", when the complexity of controlling systems exceeds the potentialities of traditional management of production practice. Coal mine is a typical representative of complicated systems, because the information about geological structure, physicomechanical properties and stress-strain state of rock mass are of fragmentary character and insufficiently reliable. A mine has a developed network of interrelated workings, by the way, some of them are productive ones being subjected to control to a certain extent, and some of them are abandoned ones being noncontrollable and hazardous in rushes of water, gas, pulp and fire. The ground pressure forces cause the disintegration of rock mass growing with depth. The progress of mining operations constantly changes the geomechanical situation forming the zones of bearing pressure, stress relieving, coal falling, as well as it leads to the pulp movement on the earth surface, breaks the ground water flow, causes deformations and changes in stability of buildings, constructions and natural objects on the earth surface. One should take into account the existence of hazardous zones within the mine field, i.e. the zones of elevated ground pressure, geological dislocations and those ones under natural water reservoirs, ponds, etc. Major coal seams are prone to rock bursts, sudden outbursts, bleeding, endogenic fire. It is obvious, that in practice it is extremely difficult to account for the mentioned above factors in their interrelation.

The room-and-pillar mining method is used extensively in underground limestone mines in the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. The rock mass is typically a near-horizontal, bedded deposit at relatively shallow depth. A survey of 34 mines was conducted in which data on roof spans, rock mass properties and support practices were collected as part of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health research project into ground control in limestone mines. The average room width is 13.5 m (44 ft), accommodating large mechanized equipment. The results show that the immediate roof beam can consist of many individual layers and can contain several near-vertical joints. In spite of the room widths, the roof is naturally stable in many mines. Observed roof instabilities can generally be related to excessive horizontal stresses or unfavorable geological structures that cause block fallout or beam failure of the bedded roof rocks. The survey showed that the rock mass quality of the limestone does not vary significantly throughout the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. Roof conditions and the need for support were found to be closely related to the thickness and competence of the first layer of limestone in the roof. The findings highlight the need to identify local geological structures and the roof beam characteristics so that support alternatives can be evaluated. Monitoring and observational technologies that are available for identifying potentially unstable roof are presented, which include: roof characterization using the Rock Fall Risk Index, automated logging of roofbolt hole drilling, microseismic monitoring and displacement monitoring.

"ABSTRACT: The axial and lateral monotonic and cyclic behavior of helical pile foundations was investigated and new innovative helical screw systems suitable for seismic loadings were developed and patented. More than one hundred full scale field load tests were conducted on instrumented helical screw piles installed in cohesive soil. The piles included: plain helical screw piles (P-HSP); grouted (G-HSPs); fiber reinforced polymer FRP-G-HSPs; and reinforced grouted RG-HSPs. The RG-HSP piles axial capacity was more than twice that for P-HSP, with minimal reduction after cyclic loading, and their lateral capacity was more than 3 times the P-HSPs capacity. A 3-D finite element model was established. The results of 3-D finite element modeling were used to establish the load transfer mechanism and a design methodology for the considered piles.INTRODUCTION AND LITERATURE REVIEWHelical (screw) anchors have been utilized in tension loading and have gained popularity for bearing load applications. Helical piles represent an overall cost effective alternative to conventional piles for new construction and repair applications. The helical piles speed and ease of installation, less noise during installation added advantage with regards to their efficiency and reliability for underpinning including re-support and reconstruction of distressed and damaged foundations for either stabilization or rehabilitation. The “square shaft” SS175 pile is a segmented deep foundation system with helical steel bearing plates (helices) welded to a central steel shaft. Load is transferred from the shaft to the surrounding soil through these bearing plates. Segments or sections are joined with bolted couplings. Practically installed depth is limited only by soil resistance and economics. A helical bearing plate or helix is one pitch of a screw thread. All helices regardless of their diameter have a standard 75 mm pitch (Figure.1). The performance of single helical anchors and group action were studied experimentally and theoretically by several researchers, the researches focuses on the installation torque and uplift resistance. Some researches focus on the load carrying capacity with little pile response to cyclic loading effects or to instrumented full scale field testing. Helical piles axial compressive or lateral loading still is not well characterized and needs more analyses and their seismic performance was not investigated. For such this research was initiated to investigate the helical piles monotonic and cyclic performances under axial and lateral loadings to consider their usage in different applications in seismic zones. Among the several researchers, Clemence (1983); Mooney et al. (1985) conducted field and laboratory testing; Hoyt (1989), Hoyt et al. (1995), and Ghaly and Clemence (1998) conducted theoretical and experimental testing, Puri and Vijay (1984), Huang et al. (1995), Perko (2000), and Pack (2000) conducted theoretical analyses. Rao and Prasad (1993), Prasad and Rao (1994), conducted experimental testing; Vickars and Clemence (2000) studied the performance of helical piles with grouted shafts."

Information and communication technology (ICT) is seen as a key source of future productivity improvements in mines. The information technology infrastructure (ITI) necessary to achieve these productivity improvements will come in the form of data integrated from multiple source systems throughout the mining value chain. Two pure approaches are available: supplier-controlled or operations controlled data structures; each strategy has its own advantages and disadvantages. Case studies involving the South African mining industry are used to demonstrate the advantages of using hybrid-controlled data structures. Depending on the level of operational control, new skills are also necessary to be learnt by mining professionals including: information engineering; creating consistent and quality data; and process improvement techniques that use the integrated data for improving the operation.

The Cooper River Bridge, the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America, replaces two existing bridges along U.S. Highway 17 and connects the City of Charleston and the town of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Two diamond shaped towers support the 1,546 ft long main span over Cooper River and allows for a 1000 ft wide navigation channel. The Charleston high-level approach is 4351 ft long and provides a 250 ft wide navigation channel for Town Creek, while the Mount Pleasant high-level approach is 2,090 ft long. Due to the high seismicity in the region, potential vessel impact, and hurricanes, large lateral loads are expected. From various types of foundations, 10-foot diameter drilled shafts were selected for their high capacity against vertical and lateral loadings. The shafts are founded on a stiff to very stiff lightly cemented calcareous sandy clay or sandy silt layer, called Cooper Marl, which underlies the coastal sediments of the interbedded clays and sands. A group of 11 shafts supports each main tower, while a rock island protects it from vessel collision. A group of 4 to 8 shafts foundations support the other piers of the main span unit. A pair of shafts supports the High Level Approach piers. The shaft tip elevations vary from 120 ft to 230 ft below water line. An elaborate geotechnical investigation was conducted on the site, including a load test program on full-scale shafts under axial and lateral loads. The results of the tests were used to calibrate the lateral and axial soil resistance. The objective of this paper is to present the different aspects of the bridge foundation design.

En ese sentido, el presente trabajo señala los beneficios económicos y técnicos obtenidos en la planta San Rafael mediante el empleo de simuladores en los circuitos de molienda, chancado y concentración gravimétrica, los cuales permiten corroborar los cambios efectuados u optimizar los circuitos señalados de forma simple y rápida.

The offshore production of oil and gas resources has been active in the Gulf of Mexico since Kerr- McGee drilled the first commercial well out of the sight of land in 1947. Since then, approximately 60% of the offshore oil/gas production structures used globally have been erected in the GOM to support the production of energy resources’. The shallow, shelf and shelf edge waters of the Gulf of Mexico have reached or are rapidly approaching production maturity, requiring that the fixed structures used to support energy production be removed or otherwise disposed of by suitable means. The use of energetic materials has been determined to be a safe, efficient and cost effective technology to remove fixed offshore structures whose service life has been exceeded.

Investor confidence can be compromised when one observes large discrepancies between the SAMREC reserves and the mining plan. It is therefore up to the responsible persons to ensure that all contributing factors get taken into account when determining a reserve declaration. Confounding factors could be further aggravated by large oscillations in the commodity price thus resulting in major changes to the mining plan, if the accepted price was either too optimistic or pessimistic. Additional factors that must receive our attention are, uncertainty in geological facies type, mining practices, geology and grade estimation. The paper outlines (in the authors? opinion) some of the important factors that need to be taken into account, in order to ensure proper alignment between the estimates of the life of mine (LOM) reserve grades, and the corresponding actualisation of the mining plan. These parameters provide an historical insight into what actually happens when attempts are made to implement the mining envisaged in the LOM plan. In turn these allow judicious application of discount factors that enable a realistic estimate of SAMREC reserve classification and declaration. Some of the factors that will be covered are: - 1) Flexibility of developed reserves and the ability to maintain this. 2) Mining control mechanisms and their overall efficacy. 3) The ability to extrapolate facies types and its effect on grade control. 4) The ability to control the mining mix and value variation. 5) Finding a happy medium between optimism and pragmatism.
