"The gravity circuit at Les Mines Camchib Inc. consists of two pinched sluices to bleed a feed to one of two 76 cm (30"") Knelson concentrator. The Knelson concentrate is upgraded to smeltable grade with a smaller Knelson (18/30 cm) and a riffleless table. Their tails are column cyanided and washed prior to recycle to the grinding circuit. This paper details size-by-size circuit performance. The Knelsons recover around 90% of free gold (as determined by Mozley Laboratory Separator), even below 37 µm. The sluices are ineffective, with upgrading ratios around 2, but approaching unity in the fine sizes. Much of the effectiveness of the circuit lies in the high gold circulating loads in the grinding circuit, which partly atone for the poor sluice performance, and the ability of the Knelsons to recover free gold. Secondary upgrading recovers slightly above 99% of the primary concentrate gold, 90% of it in a 65% Au concentrate and the balance in a heavily loaded (10 to 20 oz/st) pregnant solution. INTRODUCTIONBackgroundThe operating performance of the mill of Les Mines Camchib Inc. has been described earlier (Laplante et al., 1989). The presence of significant chalcopyrite (1 % and up) makes flotation necessary prior to cyanidation, to limit cyanide consumption and minimize environmental impact. In 1982, the presence of very high gold circulating loads in the grinding circuit lead to the commissioning of a gravity circuit, schematically shown in Figure 1. Gravity recovery of gold has been found beneficial because it increases metallurgical recovery by 1-3% (Laplante et al, 1987), as only part of the flotation tail is cyanided, and economic recovery, because of the lower net smelter return of gold in the flotation concentrate (as compared with the gravity concentrate). The latter increase is estimated, with a net smelter return of 95%, at 1.5% when gold recovery by gravity is equal to 30%. In early 1988, a sampling program was initiated to characterize the behaviour of gold in the grinding/gravity circuit. This paper reports on the results of this study."

"From a technologist's point of view, there have been few fundamental 'breakthroughs' in the process of gold extraction since the turn of the century. However, the industry has made a great deal of progress in its response to the problems that have arisen: a changing demand for products, lower grade and more refractory ores, inflated labour and materials cost and the increasing control of governmental legislation. The trend in North America and South Africa to alleviate these problems has been to adopt a common policy to process larger tonnages of lowgrade ore through more efficient milling circuits. Here, however, is where the similarity ends.The purpose of this paper is to emphasise the different principles of practice employed by extraction plants in North America and South Africa to achieve the same common goal, namely gold bullion.2.0 INTRODUCTIONTwo very important aspects of extraction metallurgy for which the metallurgical engineer is responsible are plant design and plant commissioning.In North America and South Africa the importance of these aspects is due to the fact that both are related to the financial success of the project of which they form part. Good design is imperative if the capital invested in both the plant and the whole mining undertaking is to reap maximum profit. Furthermore, good design leads to a carefully planned and well executed start-up procedure resulting in bringing the plant into production on time, at designed efficiency and within budget.Due to the competent nature of the quartz pebble conglomerate and quartzite ore on the South African Witwatersrand, the characteristics of the ore type are not much different from one mine to the other. Thus a significant operating knowledge and experience has been built up over the years and there is considerably less risk in selecting a gold extraction process route."

The era of the shield-supported longwall face began in the United States a little over 25 years ago. The most fundamental development of the shield in the past 25 years has been an increase in size and capacity and a progression toward two-legged designs in favor over four-legged shields. Is the ?bigger-the-better? design philosophy justified? The advantage of the two-legged design is largely attributed to its active horizontal force caused by the forward orientation of the leg cylinders. How do we know this? You might be surprised to learn that shield loading data may suggest otherwise. In addition, what about setting pressures? Should they be set as high as possible? Some people have advocated that setting pressures should equal the yield pressure. Does this make any sense? Is yielding a good or bad thing? These are some questions still worthy of investigation that are addressed in this paper. The first major change in gateroad support was the use of cable bolts to replace conventional wood cribbing particularly in Western mines. Standing support changed very little until the mid-1990s, when Strata Products1 introduced the Hercules and Propsetter supports in Eastern mines and Burrell Mining Products introduced the Can support in Western mines. Since then, there has been a dramatic increase in new roof support technologies for longwall gateroad support. Historically, standing support, including shield supports, have been designed based on a simplistic model requiring the support to have sufficient capacity to support the gravity loading of a perceived detached rock mass. This approach ignores the stiffness of the support and the resulting ground deformation that is known to be critical to roof stability. Recently, a new approach based on the ground reaction concept has been promoted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to account for the interaction of the support with the rock mass behavior in achieving ground stability. In addition to gateroad support design, this concept has ramifications for shield capacities, setting pressures, and recovery room support design that challenge current practices in these areas. Although longwall mining has matured into the safest and most productive underground mining method used today, traditional concepts of roof support design and practice should still be evaluated and challenged. Ultimately, advancements in the science of ground control are made by recognizing deficiencies in current theories and thinking outside the box.

The Bureau de Recherches Geologiques et Minieres (BRGM) (a French Government-sponsored geological and mining agency), through international experience gained over many years, has become very skilled in alluvial prospection, particularly for diamonds. The research laboratories within the BRGM have also been active in creating new mineral processing equipment, some of which is directly applicable to such prospection. One such development, the mobile prospection unit, is described and its application in mineral exploration is demonstrated by a consideration of the diamond search in Australia and the general exploration of the Massif Armoricain (France). Because this latter study was fundamental in the development of the concept of 'mineral-geochemistry', and its application in mineral exploration, it is also briefly described.

Improvements continue to be made in rapid excavation and tunneling technology. There are several ways to examine the impacts of such improvements. The most common procedure is to monitor current developments and to evaluate prospects for expansion of present types of uses. Other approaches are called for, however, if the technology might be used in ways not now imagined, if the search is for information for managers of technology development, and if the issue is that of the wise use of the technology by society. The first section of the paper will pose these matters as questions. These questions will be examined from the point of view of the processes of technology development and utilization, and then further examined against the backdrop of processes at work within the urban area. Such an examination will provide insight into the way technology developments should proceed. The final section will present some comments that may be useful to those guiding the development of the technology and to those who might provide leadership for its wise utilization. THE QUESTIONS Three questions are posed: 1. Are there uses for the technology beyond further penetrations of its present markets? 2. Can information be supplied to managers of technology development so that they may improve the assignment of priorities among development choices? 3. How can society make wiser use of the technology?

Your thoughts on the current status of the global minerals industries? The global economic, technological, social and political changes of the last two decades of the 20th century resulted in the emergence of a restructured minerals industry. This industry is now based on a new cost-cutting philosophy; utilization of modern technology; productivity gains rather than production tonnages; diversification of mineral markets; and globalization of exploration, mining and processing. Quantity and tons used to be the focus. The emphasis today is on remaining competitive in the marketplace by lowering per-unit production costs as much as possible. What factors and trends will impact the minerals industries in this, the 21st century? A number of parameters will impact minerals operations and shape the future sustainability and growth of the minerals industries. Increased demand for minerals will be accompanied by the demand for technical advancements. We will also see a continued emphasis on health and safety, environmental stewardship, and education and training. Let me elaborate.

A few of the more progressive mining companies have taken precautions to safeguard employees or man-trips. Specially constructed men-cars -have been provided with special devices or mechanisms to stop the cars on slopes, if the hoisting cable should break. Cars have been equipped with safety chains to connect and hold them together if a coupling should break. Steel frames covered with heavy wire netting have been placed over cars to reduce injuries to the riders from roof fails on slopes. A safety cable passing from the front car to a point above the cable socket on the slope hoisting cable is used frequently as a precaution in case the socket loosens o the main cable breaks at the socket. Such devices are commendable, but the percentage of man-cars and man-trips protected is relatively small - entirely too small. Man-trips that travel level haulage roads are rarely protected safety devices, and haulage roads are seldom inspected by mine officials to determine the condition of roof and ribs.

During the year 1940 a complete investigation was made of the whole of the stoping operations throughout the Great Boulder Mine and, as a result, it was decided to convert some of the existing shrinkage stopes into cut-and-fill stopes, and also to mine many of the more recently developed ore blocks by the latter method. The necessity for filling was due primarily to the structure of the ore blocks, the character of the walls and possible excessive dilution, but was influenced also by the grade of the ore-block and by the fact that cleaner mining can be carried out by cut-and-fill stoping.The comparatively few cut-and-fill stopes in operation prior to 1940 had been filled mainly with waste rock from development work, but as the amount of this material available, or likely to become available, would have been wholly inadequate for future operations, it was proposed to construct a system of passes to supply filling material from the surface.Owing to the distribution of the stopes, no central pass or system of passes could be devised which would service all the stopes satisfactorily.However, work was commenced on two passes, one designed to service the cut-and-fill stopes in the Eastern Section of the mine, and another to service those in the Western Section. It was realised that these passes could serve only a small proportion of the total number of Stopes (Figs. 1 and 2). During the progress of this work experiments were undertaken to test the possibility of using filtered tailings underground as an adjunct to the above scheme, but for various reasons these were only partially completed.Early in 1942 it was suggested by the Mill Superintendent that an attempt be made to fill with wet classified flotation tailings as practised at Mt. Lyell in Tasmania and at the Triton Mine at Reedy, West Australia. For the purpose of testing this, an experimental stope was prepared on the 309-ft. level, "X" Lode. This was 100 feet long and averaged 4 feet in width. Water-tight rearings were built at each end of the stope and waste rock fill was spread to a height of 6 to 8 feet above the timber. Used filter cloths were laid on top of the fill and brought a few feet, up the walls of the stope. A two-inch victaulic drainage line was then placed in position, the end passing through a hole in one of the bearings and thence to a sump. In the central portion of the stope two vertical pipes were brought up from this line. This article presents a novel technology for sensing the size of rocks after blasting in hard rock mines. Blast engineers require rock size statistics to carefully adjust the blasting parameters. The rock fragmentation requirements vary depending on the ore type and crusher specifications. The most popular statistical parameters in the industry are the so-called P numbers (e.g., P80 and P100). A machine vision based system is introduced here for automatic image collection and fragmentation analysis of the material right inside the bucket or dipper of mining shovels. A heavy-duty camera provides the required imaging data to an embedded computer mounted inside the cab. A custom machine vision software continuously analyzes the captured bucket images and stores the suitable ones in local storage which are then fed to a Desktop software for automatic fragmentation analysis. This technology has been developed by Motion Metrics International and is commercially available as FragMetrics?.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Sea floor hydrothermal activity in the Okinawa Trough is considered a modern analog to ancient Kuroko-type volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits. Recent scientific drilling projects at active hydrothermal fields have enabled us to conduct comparative studies on hydrothermal clay minerals between ancient and modern systems. Zonal distributions of clay minerals below the sea floor of an active hydrothermal field have been revealed, which is represented by the distinctive assemblage of clay minerals. Zone 1 consists mainly of montmorillonite and sometimes of kaolinite; Zone 2 consists of chlorite and chlorite-smectite mixed-layer mineral; and Zone 3 is represented by the co-occurrence of illite and chlorite, from shallow to deep. This zonal distribution is likely to be in accordance with that reported previously for the Kuroko-type ore deposit. Similarities are also recognised in chemical compositions of illite and chlorite, which are both abundant clay minerals in the vicinity of the ore deposit. While illite would be formed by interaction with the hydrothermal ore fluid, the formation of Mg-rich chlorite is attributed to Mg metasomatism caused by the involvement of sea water. Further studies, especially focusing on interactions between fluid and solid phases, would significantly promote our understanding of dynamic processes for the formation of VMS depositsCITATION:Ishibashi, J and Miyoshi, Y, 2015. El presente trabajo señala la geología, litología y mineralización del yacimiento minero El Tapado del distrito Yanacocha, situado al norte de Cajamarca. Este se encuentra conformado por diferentes depósitos auríferos epitermales de alta sulfuración, los cuales se desarrollan dentro de un vulcanismo calco-alcalino de composición andesítica a dacítica de edad Mioceno y son correlacionables con la Formación Porculla del Grupo Calipuy. La geología del depósito está conformada por rocas porfiríticas (intrusiones) y flujos piroclásticos tales como tufos de cristales, tufos líticos y brechas piroclásticas afectados por eventos eruptivos de brechas freáticas - freatomagmáticas. Todas estas rocas han sufrido posterior alteración hidrotermal con ensambles típicos de sistemas tipo ácido-sulfato. La mineralización económica está controlada por procesos hidrotermales y se encuentra asociada a sílice masiva y sílice vuggy ( 1-10 g/t Au y estructuras de hasta 136 g/t Au ) y en menor grado sílice alunita y sílice granular (moderada a baja ley).

The production of a 40% Al-Ti alloy was successfully proven at the lab scale, using pure TiO2, aluminium, and lime. These tests were conducted in an induction furnace maintained at 1600?16250C. The introduction of rutile into the feed recipe resulted in an alloy containing between 0.35 and 1.10% Zr, depending on rutile to TiO2 ratio. DC arc production of the alloy was largely accomplished at 40 and then 200kW scale. These tests evaluated various metallurgical and operational factors including target slag composition, Ti-content in the alloy, co-feeding versus sequential, furnace bath depth, and rutile as part of the Ti containing feedstock. Overall, an alloy containing 24?33% Ti was consistently produced with co-feeding of the reactants and with lower taphole tapping. When rutile was added, the zirconium analysis in the alloy remained below 0.2%. The main impurity elements were iron, silicon, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen.

Catastrophic rock slope failures have caused destructive tsunamis in Norwegian fjords. At the Åknes rock slope the tsunami generating potential is large due to the potential large volume involved in a possible catastrophic failure. Widening of the upper crack has been recorded since 1986, and in recent years, a quite extensive investigation and monitorin campaign has been conducted. Data from some of these investigations are presented and analysed with respect to a preliminary evaluation of the stability of the slope.

One of the chief drawbacks to Bendigo mining always has been the difficulty of draining the mines in an equitable manner, so that each company or mine owner bears the properly share. The trouble seems to have been apparent on this field since the diggings were discovered. One mine would push on more expeditiously than its neighbour in looking for the precious metal and sink its shaft, whilst those in the vicinity would simply potter about, and discontinue sinking until gold was struck in the deeper ground, and: then they would go ahead, start sinking, while the pioneer would have to pump all or most of their water. This sort of thing continued here for years until the leases were worked down to the very deep ground and the water became such a b.urden on those companies that had deep shafts, that first one stopped hauiing and then others; with the result that over 1000 feet of water was allowed to accumulate on the New Chum line. lt appeared that if something were not done the whole of the main line of reef in the Bendigo district would be at a standstill, when a scheme was formulated and handed to Mr. Lansell, who, with other gentlemen, took the matter up, and at the present time all the mines on that particular portion of reef are in full work and the water all bailed out.lt is this scheme that I am requested to place before you and also to give you the details of the work done since its adoption.

Up to 60 elements can be found in complex electronic equipment: base metals, precious metals and special metals in circuit boards and batteries. Because of its amount WEEE represents a considerable metal resource with a higher special and precious metal content than found in ores. The Umicore integrated smelter and refinery recovers and supplies back to the market 17 different metals from EEE. Pre-treated materials enter state of the art, material and energy efficient metallurgical processes for environmentally sound recovery of metals and treatment of off gasses and hazardous substances. The organics in the feed function as reducing agent and alternative energy source during smelting for precious metal recovery. Lithium-ion batteries are treated using a dedicated process. As a result the environmental footprint of metals produced from EEE is much smaller than primary production.

The Korean crisis and the cessation of Russian manganese-ore shipments to the United States in 1950 reemphasized the almost total dependence of the domestic steel industry on foreign supplies for metallurgical-grade manganese ore. In this emergency, Congress authorized the Bureau of Mines to undertake experimental mine and process development work on the known large reserves of low-grade manganese ore in the Artillery Mountains region in Mohave County, Ariz. The objective of the work was to obtain the basic mining and metallurgical data needed to make specific plans for initiating exploitation of the deposits within 3 years if high-grade foreign ore could not be obtained during the emergency. The manganese deposits of the Artillery Mountains region are in an area of about 25 square miles on the north side of the Bill Williams River in southern Mohave County. Lasky, of the Federal Geological Survey, has estimated reserves at 175 million tons of manganiferous material assaying 3.5 to 4 percent Mn. Although the man¬ganese occurs in various Tertiary and Quaternary formations as both bedded and fissure vein deposits, the more important syngenetic deposits are found in upper and lower manganiferous zones in the sedimentary beds of playa and alluvial fan origin that constitute the Chapin Wash formation.
