Lacustrine sediments, hydrothermal explosion breccias and spring precipitates deposited 5200 - 1800 years BP as a result of geothermal activity at Lake Rotokaua, contain New Zealand's largest known sulphur reserves. Current drill indicated reserves are 2 600 000 tonnes of elemental sulphur, assuming a ten per cent (dry basis) cut-off, contained in some 17 000 000 tonnes of ore with an average grade of 214.0 per cent (dry basis) sulphur. Additional inferred ore containing 500 000 - 900 000 tonnes of sulphur has yet to be prospected by drilling. Geological factors will be important in exploitation of the deposit, particularly the extent and disposition of the orebody, sulphur grades and distribution, physical characteristics of the ore, permeability and stability of the overburden and the nature and extent of geothermal activity in the area. Trials to date indicate that Frasch mining and possibly opencutting are unlikely to be successful mining methods. Further mining feasibility studies will be required to ascertain the most likely mining system for the deposit.

Its purpose is to assist operators in selecting environmentally desirable pollution control and reclamation procedures based upon their particular mining situation. The guide includes information on interpreting physical and cultural factors that must be considered in planning and implementing a mining and reclamation program, achieving environmental protection objectives, and improving community/industry cooperation. Included as appendices are a summary of state laws and a list of additional readings on the subject.

In 1953, Dr. N. H. Fisher of the Bureau of Mineral Resources, acting on behalf of the Society of Economic Geologists, which is considering the sponsoring of a uniform system of nomenclature for ore reserves, enquired from the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy whether it had ever considered this subject and particularly whether it had ever set up any standard definitions or specifications with regard to ore reserves.As this had not been done, but was thought to be desirable, the Council of the Institute appointed a Committee consisting of H. H. Dunkin, Associate, Professor of Mining Engineering, University of Melbourne (Convenor), E. A. Rudd, Professor of Economic Geology, University of Adelaide, I. N. Campbell, Chief Geologist of Western Mining Corporation; and the writer to consider and report on this supject.In December 1953, the Committee submitted its first report to the council and this report (reproduced here as an Appendix) was widely circulated among member companies, and engineers, with an invitation to comment on the proposal. A large number of, replies was received and studied.After studying the replies the Committee issued a second report in part as follows:-From these replies we have learned that the suggestions made in the first teport of the Committee are unacceptable to most of those interested, on one or all, of the following grounds;-(a) number of categories,(b) definition of categories;(c) nomenclature.

Oregon Resources Corp. (ORC) has developed and permitted a new mining operation that incorporates a process design that will allow the unique paleo-beach placer deposits of southwestern Oregon to be extracted efficiently and economically, creating the only domestically mined source of a unique foundry grade chromite and specialty de-veining sand for precision casting. The operation will also provide an additional domestic source of garnet and zircon. Engineering design has been guided by the variable geology and mineralogy of the paleo-beach placer deposits as well as the need for a dry tailing scheme that resolves a lack of water resources at the placer locations and at the same time eliminates the need for slurry settling ponds, typical of paleo-beach placer operations in North America.

Construction law in general and the law of deep foundations in particular continues to develop rapidly, particularly in the areas of risk allocation. Public and private owners are increasingly using contractual disclaimers to shift the risk of differing site conditions to contractors, and courts are increasingly willing to enforce these contractual devices. Perhaps also in an effort to control costs, public and private owners are turning to design-build contracting techniques. While design-build offers many advantages over traditional project delivery systems, it does not answer all of the risk-allocation questions that frequently arise. Even in design-build, problems with unanticipated subsurface conditions and defective design are not easily addressed. Finally, developments in electronic commerce present the potential to transform the construction industry.

"INTR0DUCTIONThis publication is a third of a series devoted to falls of roof and coal in coal mines of the Western States. It gives the results of examinations of the mines of the Rock Springs coal District of Sweetwater County, Wyo., which represent the principal coal beds therein and approximately 75 percent of total production of the State.A study was made of safety conditions at all the producing mines of the district and suggestions were offered the operators regarding methods and practices which would, in the opinion of the writer, provide additional safeguards to prevent accidents from falls of roof and coal.In presenting the subject, consideration must be given to such features as character of the coal beds, depth of cover. methods of mining, timbering practice, roof testing and supervision, and for comparative purposes to certain statistical matter bearing upon relation of accidents to their causes, tonnage produced, men employed, days worked, and lost days due to accidents during the 3—year period covered by this study.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe writer acknowledges the cooperation of the officials of the various coal companies, without whose assistance this work could not have been completed.F0UR REPRESENTATIVE COAL OPERATIONSThis report relates to four representative coal operations in the Rook Springs district of Sweetwater County, Wyo., which are referred to as mines A, B, C, and D. Project Environmental Approval is a multi-faceted issue. From a mining perspective, it is a costly item because of avoidable time delay. The government perspective is that the approvals are a necessary part of meeting departmental requirements to ensure that the wellbeing of other uses of the environment is maintained. This paper outlines some of the problems inherent in the environmental approvals process and makes recommendations to both the proponent and government about improving the efficiency of the process.

A comprehensive Australia-wide survey of comminution energy consumption at copper and gold mines was presented by the authors at the 11th AusIMM Mill Operators’ Conference 2012. The database has been extended to include major overseas mines and used to benchmark comminution energy consumption across the industry. The mines included in this study now represent 15 and 24 per cent of the total global gold and copper production respectively, and almost all Australian production. The comminution energy intensity per unit of saleable metal has been presented in a graphical form similar to a cost curve used in economics. The graphical method has been developed to assess the competitive advantage that can be achieved by reducing comminution energy intensity.This benchmarking tool has been applied to three published case studies to assess its applicability. The first case study indicated that a large reduction in size-specific energy (kWh/t -75 µm) was achievable by converting standard semi-autogenous and ball mill circuits to include high pressure grinding roll and stirred mills. The second case study investigated the metal-specific energy reduction historically achieved by Bougainville with the addition of a preconcentration screening plant. The final case study was conducted by Barrick Gold Corporation and involved incremental efficiency upgrades at three of its gold mines: Cortez, Cowal and Mara North. The application of the benchmarking tool to each of these case studies successfully demonstrated the scale and competitive advantage that was achieved by reducing energy intensity.CITATION:Ballantyne, G R and Powell, M S, 2014. "Since milling began in 1912, the Dome mill, now part of the Porcupine Joint Venture (PJV), has been expanded several times, the most recent increasing the milling rate from 3,500 to 11,500 tonnes per day. Dome uses conventional crushing and grinding followed by gravity concentration to recover free milling gold. A cyanidation/CIP process recovers the remaining gold in the gravity tails.Over the past few years, continuous gravity improvements have increased the gravity recovery from 20% to nearly 50% of the plant feed gold. This paper describes some of the factors that have contributed to this dramatic increase, and suggests how gravity recovery can be further improved. Gravity circuit availability has been improved to >98% with the implementation of a preventative maintenance program. More Knelson concentrators have been added to the circuit, and in 2002, an Acacia Intensive Leach Reactor was installed to replace the shaking table. In 2003, the entire gravity circuit was audited to evaluate and quantify the circuit performance. The metallurgical and mechanical operating conditions of the gravity circuit are now well understood, and areas for further improvement are well defined.INTRODUCTIONThe Porcupine Joint Venture was formed in 2002 between Placer Dome Inc. and Kinross Gold Corporation. One of the goals of the JV was to use the milling capacity of the Dome mill to process ore from Placer Dome and Kinross mines in the Timmins Camp. The PJV Dome Mill utilizes gravity concentration, cyanide leaching and carbon in pulp gold circuits to recover gold. Gravity recovery has been used in some form at the Dome Mill for most of its existence, first using conventional jigs, these being replaced in 1993 by two Knelson Concentrators, one for each of the two grinding circuits in the Dome mill. Over the years more concentrators have been added to improve the gravity recovery, most recently in 2002 for a current total of five. Also in 2002, an Acacia Intensive Leach Reactor was added to process the Knelson concentrate, replacing the shaking table."

"In 1997, a group of Canadian mining companies met to review the Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) program and to consider future activities. They concluded that (1) that Canadian industry and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) should fund a small secretariat in Ottawa to support technology transfer in Canada and, (2) that it was important for industry to continue the momentum of MEND on an international scale.The need for the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) was strongly endorsed by consultants, company, university, and government experts from Australia, Canada, and the United States who convened in Vancouver in February 1998. The initial focus was the development of a solid knowledge base covering the collective experience of INAP’s members to promote the dissemination of successful practices, the identification of knowledge gaps, and the formulation of effective research proposals. The sharing of information on past successes and failures alone was viewed assufficient justification for the formation of INAP.INAP was officially launched in October 1998, and is now an effective, industry-based initiative to globally coordinate research and development in the management of sulphide mine waste. Significant improvements in the management of sulphidic mine materials through knowledge sharing, research, and development of technology by INAP will reduce liability associated with acid drainage.This paper will explore the international efforts and activities of INAP."

The selection of Sydney and Port Kembla for the First Ordinary Meeting of the Institute for 1938 was, no doubt, a recognition of the celebrations marking the 150th Anniversary of the first settlement of this country. In selecting a theme for my Presidential Address, I propose to depart from the precedents of my distinguished predecessors, as I feel that this year of celebration is the natural year for a brief review of the history and progress of the Institute.In July, 1892, the Amalgamated Mining Managers' Association of Australasia held its Annual Conference in Ballarat, Victoria, when Mr. Uriah Dudley, who attended as a delegate from Broken Hill, brought forward the advisability of the formation of an Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Mr. Dudley was authorised to take such action as he thought fit, and the result was the formation of a Provisional Committee in Broken Hill of men who were mostly members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. On October 1, 1993 the regulations for assessing and cleaning up contaminated soil and groundwater in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts were revised. These new regulations, known as the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) 310 CMR 40.0000, were developed to keep routine releases out of the regulatory system and rely on private parties to handle most releases without Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) oversight. An integral part of the new MCP is the Licensed Site Professional (LSP). An LSP is required to handle activities and render opinions once a site enters the MCP. These regulations must be adhered to where ever a release has occurred, including construction sites. A brief overview of the new MCP is given below; see attached MCP Flowchart for graphical summary. Entering the MCP Process A release of oil or hazardous material (OHM) to the soil or groundwater above applicable reportable quantities (RQ's) or reportable concentrations (RC's) will require notification to the DEP and compliance with applicable provisions of the MCP. RQ's and RC's are listed in the MCP (310 CMR 40.1600) for most compounds that are typically encountered. For each compound there are two RC's for soil (S-1 and S-2) and two for groundwater (GW-1 and GW-2). The S-1 and GW-1 RC's apply to sites that are environmentally more sensitive, as a result they are lower than the S-2 and GW-2 RC's.

Background: A cross-sectional study was conducted in November2001 to establish the prevalence rates of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoea) in a coalmining town in Mpumalanga. Methods: 155 adults were recruited (79 males and 76 females), by holding community meetings, and by door-to-door recruitment. Saliva and urine specimens were collected for the analysis of HIV and STI prevalence, respectively. Results: The mean age for males was 31.35 years (min = 19 yrs and max = 50 yrs) and the mean age of the female participants was31.90 years (min = 17 yrs, max = 49 yrs). The prevalence of HIV was found to be 22.78% [95% CI (14.09?33.59)] in the males vs. 47.37%[95% CI (35.79?55.16)] in the females, [p = 0.001, OR = 3.05, 95%CI(1.49?6.26)]. The prevalence of C. trachomatis was 7.90% [95% CI(2.95?16.39)] in the males vs. 12.86% [95% CI (6.05?23.00)] in the females, p = 0.324. The prevalence of N. gonorrhoea was 3.79%[95% CI (0.79?1.08)] in the males vs. 9.86% [95% CI (4.06?19.26)]in the females, p = 0.137. HIV was significantly associated with C. trachomatis, [p = 0.032, OR = 3.18, 95% CI (1.04?9.72)], but was not significant when stratified by gender. HIV was not significantly associated with N. gonorrhoea (p = 0.072) but it was significantly associated when stratified by gender, p = 0.001 for females. There were no significant associations between HIV and age (p = 0.408), even upon stratification by gender. Conclusions: HIV prevalence in this community is high, and corresponds to national figures. However, the prevalence of STIs is surprisingly low as it would be expected to be high in a migrant population. Although communities are exposed to expanding peer-education activities that encourage behaviour change, the prevalence of HIV in this group. During 1982 and 1983, the Bureau of Mines concentrated its fugitive dust control research on haulage road dust suppression by newer chemi-cals relatively unknown in the mineral industry, innovative dust control designs for haulage trucks, chemical tailing basin stabilization, and combined chemical and vegetation tailing basin stabilization. Relatively unknown dust suppression chemicals and innovative aerodynamic modifications to haulage truck fender designs were tested on a Minnesota sand and gravel operation haulage road. Magnesium chloride salt at 95-pct control efficiency and a petroleum derivative at 70-pct control efficiency were effective in suppressing dust generated by haulage vehicles; however, none of the fender modifications were successful. Commonly used dust suppressant chemicals were tested on a Minnesota taconite tailing basin to reduce the dust lift-off during the spring and fall dry seasons. The most successful chemical was lignin sulfonate with a seasonal cost of less than $200 per acre to achieve 90-pct dust control. When chemical treatments for immediate dust control were com-bined with revegetation for permanent control, the most promising chemical treatment based on vegetation response was lime-neutralized lignin sulfonate.

In December 2009, the Italian High Speed Rail Network AV began running over the full 1000 km system length from Turin, at the foothills of the Alps to Salerno, on the seacoast south of the volcano Mt. Vesuvius. It runs through Alpine rivers, highly seismic active zones, mountains, river plains, and through some of the most densely populated areas in Europe as well as some of its most expensive real estate. The Italian High Speed Network?s technical/economic constraints and its regulatory/socio-environmental concerns well may mirror similar obstacles set to confront the nascent California High Speed Rail Program. The two types of constraints must be dealt with together to reach the best construction solution. It is estimated that more than 20% of Italian High Speed Rail Network costs were spent on ground engineering including over 150 km of tunnels, 200 km of viaducts and bridges and 650 km of embankments and trenches. However, it also is estimated that 25% of costs were spent on social and environmental integration of the new rail lines including over 6 square miles of green offsets, 160 km of anti-noise walls, and 300 agreements for socio-environmental work. This paper will look at four examples of innovative ground engineering solutions, each with its own intricate set of constraints: ? Clay shales are currently being assessed as possible host rock formations for the deep geological disposal of radioactive waste. However, one main concern is that the favourable long-term isolation properties of the intact rock mass could be negatively affected by the formation of an excavation damaged zone (EDZ) around the underground openings. The goal of this thesis was to develop and validate a mechanically-based model of the deformation and failure process of a clay shale, namely Opalinus Clay (OPA), with particular focus on the influence of anisotropy on the short-term response of circular tunnels. To achieve this goal, a hybrid continuum-discontinuum numerical approach was developed in combination with new field measurements from the Mont Terri underground research laboratory. The response of OPA during the excavation of a full-scale emplacement (FE) test tunnel was characterized by geodetic monitoring of wall displacements, radial extensometers and longitudinal inclinometers. The deformation measurements indicated strong directionality induced by the combined effect of in-situ stress field and bedding planes striking parallel to the tunnel axis, with the most severe deformation occurring in the direction approximately perpendicular to the material layering. Computer simulations were conducted using a newly-extended combined finite-discrete element method (FEM/DEM), a numerical technique which allows the explicit simulation of brittle fracturing and associated seismicity. The numerical experimentation firstly focused on the laboratory-scale analysis of failure processes (e.g., acoustic activity) in brittle rocks, and on the role of strength and modulus anisotropy in the failure behaviour of OPA in tension and compression. The fracturing behaviour of unsupported circular excavations in laminated rock masses was then analyzed under different in-situ stress conditions. Lastly, the proposed modelling methodology was applied to the aforementioned FE tunnel to obtain unique insights into the EDZ formation process around emplacement tunnels for nuclear waste. The calibrated numerical model suggested delamination along bedding planes and subsequent extensional fracturing as key mechanisms of the damage process potentially leading to buckling and spalling phenomena. Overall, the research findings are already having a direct impact on the preliminary design process of an underground repository for nuclear waste in Switzerland.
