Sluiceboxes can provide a much higher concentration ratio than most other gravity concentrators (up to 50 000:1) at very high overall placer gold recoveries (greater than 99 per cent). They are also very reliable, inexpensive and simple to operate. This combination is very difficult to beat and explains why the sluicebox is still the most important placer gold concentrator in northwestern Canada, Alaska and the rest of the world. A sluicebox is a rectangular fl ume containing riffles on matting, through which a dilute (<12 per cent) slurry of water and alluvial gravel flows. Sluiceboxes are actually centrifugal concentrators with settling velocity playing a minor role in gold recovery. Due to their higher density, gold particles tend to segregate to the bottom of the slurry flow where they form a streamline that is diverted by a low pressure zone into a riffle. Under ideal conditions, this ribbon of slurry will be overturned as it flows down the rear of the following riffle and will continue fl owing in a circular path to form a vortex. At the bottom of this vortex, centrifugal and gravitational forces combine to drive gold particles into or beside the matting. To remove the gold concentrates, sluiceboxes are shut down and the riffles and matting are taken apart and cleaned. The slurry velocity provides the energy that powers the vortex. If the velocity of the slurry is reduced through overloading with solids, insufficient water flows or shallow gradients it may not sustain a full size vortex. If the riffles are too close, too far apart, too tall, or if there is not enough energy available to the vortex, the vortex will not be formed properly and gold recovery will be reduced. If the slurry velocity is too high, extreme turbulence and the resulting scouring will also cause gold losses. Testing sluiceboxes with conventional sampling and evaluation techniques is very costly, time consuming and problematic. Most placer gold ores contain a very small number of gold particles in a large volume of pay gravels. Sluiceboxes can lose coarse gold particles. The presence or absence of one of these particles in a tailings sample can lead to high unpredictable errors (nugget effect) even when large sample volumes are processed with care. Every time conventional samples are upgraded, additional errors are introduced due to the inefficiency of recovery equipment. Nuclear tracer tests are more accurate, faster, cheaper and safer than conventional sampling. In 1989 through 2002, the recovery efficiency of dozens of sluicing systems was determined by mixing radioactive gold particles (tracers) into the feed streams of dozens of placer mines in the Yukon Territory, British Columbia, Alaska and Guyana. Four distinct sizes of nuclear tracers were used and their recovery was related to the design and operational characteristics of the individual sluiceboxes and their pay gravels. At clean up, scintillometers were used to detect the very low level X-ray and gamma ray radiation emitted by these tracers and locate them in the sluice runs. The effectiveness of any given section of riffles was easily diagnosed by the presence or absence of tracers. At every mine the gravel feed rates, water flows, equipment dimensions and riffle performance were measured. After the gold tracers were removed from the fi nal concentrate and counted, the concentrate was sieved and weighed. These gold recovery, weight and sieve data were used to calculate the quantities and size distributions of the gold particles in the original pay gravels and those lost in the tailings. The expired tracers were stored in a lead lined container until their radioactivity was near background levels (about two months). The standard errors from these radiotracer tests were estimated from binomial probability theory with the equation: SE = {(n + p + q) ^ 0.5}/n. Where n was the total number of radiotracers added, p is the proportion recovered and q was the proportion lost. Each overall recovery estimate would be within one standard error of the true recovery value (14 times out of 20) and almost always within two standard errors of the true recovery (19 times out of 20). The maximum standard error with 100 tracers was five per cent and occurred when the recovery approached 50 per cent. With higher recoveries, standard errors usually ranged from one to two per cent.

THIS tunnel, which is an adit 7000 ft. long, was undertaken by the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company Limited to connect its treatment works with the North Lyell mine at depth, with a view to effecting economies in transport and drainage. The work was carried out at high pressure throughout from both ends, and although the ground in the mine end was intensely hard, good progress was made, and driving was completed in less than fifteen months.The Mount Lyell mining field is situated in the west of Tasmania, about 20 miles inland, the only means of access being the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company's 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway which connects with the Government railway system of the State at Strahan, on Macquarie Harbour. The region is mountainous, and presents many difficulties to the road and railway engineer. The West Coast range running north and south in a succession of bold prominences, which rise up to 4000 ft. above sea-level, forms the backbone of the district, and on its foothills the Mount Lyell mines are situated. Much as one hopes to predict whether damaging seismicity might occur somewhere in the next shift, this is not possible at present. Recently, an analysis of seismicity at two mines has shown that a small increase in seismicity occasionally occurs before both large and small events. This analysis is extended here to five mines, with the same results. Earthquake seismologists forecast hazard in terms of the average incidence of earthquakes over the last 50 years, adjusted on an hourly basis according to the possibility of aftershocks of events that have happened. The rate of seismicity in any area remains approximately constant when expressed as seismicity per area mined, or better still, per unit of elastic strain energy released. It is suggested that seismic hazard in mines be estimated using historical seismicity and forward modelling, adjusted according to the possibility of aftershocks. In summary, medium-term forecasting of seismicity is viable; short-term prediction of large events is not.

A pulverized coal fired power plant is being built in Osceola, Arkansas, along the Mississippi River. The subsurface soil conditions consist of a certain amount of very soft clayey silt and clay underlain with a medium dense sand layer and a dense sand layer. The site has been raised four to five feet with fill material consisting of sand and gravel. Consolidation settlement due to the fill is expected to cause negative shaft resistance (downdrag) on the pile foundations. The site is located in a high seismic hazard area - the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ). The liquefaction analyses indicated that there is a high liquefaction potential in the medium dense sand layer. Load tests are needed to determine the shaft resistance and the end bearing of each soil layer for design purpose. Two types of pile foundations ? augered pressure grouted displacement pile (APGD) and partial augered pressure grouted displacement pile (P-APGD) were considered for this project. Ten pile load tests, including five compression tests and five tension tests, were performed for three different areas. Strain gauges were installed for the compression tests. The APGD and P-APGD piles were installed side by side for comparison. In addition, three additional dynamic tests were performed to supplement the information from the static load tests. Load deflection curves for the compression tests were predicted, and the failure loads were interpreted using four different methods. The shaft resistance and the end bearing were determined from the strain gauge data and were used to back calculate the ultimate capacity. The back-calculated capacities are in good agreement with the predicted failure loads; they were further verified with the tension load test results.

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Detailed paragenetic studies of the post-tectonic fracture-hosted vein mineralisation have demonstrated a complex paragenesis, reflecting a multi-phase combination of regional metallogenesis and tectonics through time. Previously published work regarding paragenesis and zoning was oversimplified. Two major epochs of mineralisation resulted in the emplacement of the A1 group of assemblages, from which lead, copper and silver were the main metals mined, and the A2 group, whose galena is only moderately argentiferous but which were major sources of lead and zinc. Tectonic and tentative isotopic evidence points to post-orogenic relaxation as the mechanism for development of the A1 assemblages in the early Devonian, whereas the A2 assemblages are believed to reflect Variscan extensional regimes and regional metallogenesis in the early Carboniferous and Permian

Current mine production planning, scheduling, and allocation of resources are based on mathematical programming models. In practice, the optimized solution cannot be attained without examining all possible combinations and permutations of the extraction sequence. Operations research methods have limited applications in large-scale surface mining operations because the number of variables becomes too large. The primary objective of this study is to develop and implement a hybrid simulation framework for the open pit scheduling problem. The paper investigates the dynamics of open pit geometry and the subsequent material movement as a continuous system described by time-dependent differential equations. The continuous open pit simulator (COPS) implemented in MATLAB, based on modified elliptical frustum is used to model the evolution of open pit geometry in time and space. Discrete open pit simulator (DOPS) mimics the periodic expansion of the open pit layouts. Function approximation of the discrete simulated push-backs provides the means to convert the set of partial differential equations (PDEs), capturing the dynamics of open pit layouts, to a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Numerical integration with the Runge-Kutta scheme yields the trajectory of the pit geometry over time with the respective volume of materials and the net present value (NPV) of the mining operation. A case study of an iron ore mine with 114 000 blocks was carried out to verify and validate the model. The optimized pit limit was designed using Lerchs-Grossman?s algorithm. The best-case annual schedule, generated by the shells node in Whittle Four-X yielded an NPV of $449 million over a 21-year mine life at a discount rate of 10% per annum. DOPS best scenario out of 2 500 simulation iterations resulted in an NPV of $443 million and COPS yielded an NPV of $440 million over the same time span. The hybrid simulation model is the basis for future research using reinforcement learning based on goal-directed intelligent agents.

Tunnels as any other structures are affected by different loads and stresses. Generally, the loads on tunnels consist of both static and dynamic loads. These loads must both be considered in the tunnel design process. In this paper, the stability state of Jiroft water-transform tunnel is evaluated. Firstly, the in-situ stresses and then using Kirsch?s equations the induced stresses due to static loads in walls and crown of tunnel are calculated. Consequently, the strain caused by probable earthquake without considering the interaction between the concrete lining of tunnel and rock mass using seismic analysis is calculated based on free-field deformation. When the strain is determined, the simplified method of closed-form solution, Wang?s equations and Penzien?s equations are used to estimate the applied forces on the tunnel due to earthquake such as axial force and bending moment on a tunnel section taking into account the interaction of the tunnel concrete lining and rock mass. Results of this study show that the loads applied to the tunnel as a result of earthquake waves can be affect the stability of underground structures, especially long structures such as tunnels.

"The settlements between mines and smelters are based on the mass of metal contained in concentrate lots. The mass of contained metal is a function of the wet mass of a lot, and its moisture content and metal grade while the variance of the mass of contained metal is a function of the same variables and their variances. Uncertainties in the measurement procedure applied to estimate each variable are quantified in terms of precision and bias. The absence of bias and an acceptable degree of precision are the keys to effective risk analysis and loss control.ISO Technical Committee 183-Copper, Lead and Zinc Sulfide Concentrates, has developed standard methods for sampling and weighing, estimating precision and testing for bias, the determination of mass loss on drying, the calculation of the mass of contained metal and its variance, and various analytical methods for major and minor metals. The variance for wet mass is calculated from the precision of the scale while the total variances of moisture and grade are estimated from pairs of interpenetrating primary samples. The variance of contained metal can be calculated either from mine data or from smelter data but the risk associated with the settlement is largely determined by the absence or presence of bias and the variance of differences between exchange assays.ISO/TC 183 does not deal with precision and bias for exchange assays but is developing guidelines to determine realistic splitting limits. Given that the exchange of assays between mines and smelters accounts for a large part of the risk associated with the settlement, precision and bias for exchange assays should be measured and monitored. The need for umpire services can be reduced by applying statistical quality control (SQC).Calibrating static scales, moisture balances and analytical balances, bias testing of sampling methods and sample preparation procedures, estimating the variance of a single variable or the variance of a function that a set of variables defines, and monitoring precision and bias for exchange assays, are the quintessence of metrology, the science of measurement, when applied in mining and metallurgy."

The successful expansion of crude oil production begun in late 1977, led to promising development of the nonfuel minerals sector. Although actual production of nonfuel minerals was limited both in variety and in percentage of output on a world scale, the potential for expansion with a rapidly developing infrastructure was significant. The energy base was expanding with construction of two new hydroelectric powerplants in addition to the existing plant near Edea. The Song Loulou plant will have a 240-megawatt capacity, and a hydroelectric plant under construction in the northern part of the country by mainland China will have 72 megawatts of installed capacity. Inflation of between 15% and 20% resulted in a real gross domestic product (GDP) of $2.8 billion2 in fiscal year 1980 (July 31 to June 1), up 6% from that of the previous fiscal year. Petroleum became the leading export item in terms of value, surpassing coffee and cocoa exports. Mineral exports as a whole increased eightfold in value, mainly because of oil sales. Oil exports also caused a reduction in the trade deficit by nearly one-third, and the Government expected its 1980-81 budget to be balanced at $1.17 billion. The Port of Douala accounted for about 8 million tons of cargo, or 93% of total maritime traffic for Cameroon. Expansion plans for the port call for an initial increase to 5 million tons, and a cargo handling capacity of 7.5 million tons in 1985 and 10 million tons by 1990. The Port of Victoria will gain importance with the startup of an oil refinery. The country's third seaport at Kribi was used solely for timber shipments, and capacity at the Port was to triple by 1981. "Potash processing has much in common in terms of unit operations and plant operating strategy with other mineral processing plants. As it is a rather large topic the processes will be broad brushed to give you some background and then I will go into a little detail on the things we do in the Cominco plant that may be of interest to the group as a whole. In particular the centrallized computer control system and associated instrumentation and the operator training programs will be covered as well as the mill fire, something that could happen in any plant. THE ORE AND PRODUCTSThere are differences in potash ores as you would expect. It is my intention to deal with the ores processed in the Saskatoon area. These are mined from the beds in the Patience Lake Member and have a mineralogical description as follows:Sylvite (Potassium Chloride) 40%Halite (Sodium Chloride) 55%Insolubles (Slimes) 5%A number of products are made from this ore. "The study evaluated the impact on overall circuit metallurgy of improving the performance of the two flotation columns that make up the final Mo cleaning stage in the Cu/Mo separation circuit at Highland Valley Copper mine. The results showed that a key factor to improve the overall circuit metallurgy was to control the size of the bubbles generated in the columns. When a large proportion of small (< 1 mm) bubbles were generated, the production rate of solids-in-concentrate increased by a factor of 4-5 compared to typical production figures without compromising concentrate quality. This increase in concentrate production rate reduced the circulating load in the circuit causing a significant increase of Mo recovery. A statistical analysis of historical production data showed a strong relationship between final concentrate production rate and overall Mo recovery. This relationship along with the results from this study indicated an opportunity to increase the recovery of Mo from 90% (typical) to 94% without downgrading concentrate grade. This 4% increase represents about 14,000 lbs or $500,000 worth of Mo each month at current metal prices.To provide a rational interpretation of the results, this study also examined whether the model of Gorain et al. (1997; 1998; 1999) could explain the increase of Mo recovery seemingly resulting from the decrease of bubble size. The data showed that the model predictions did not agree with the experimental data, i.e., for a given change (decrease) of bubble size, the predictions underestimated significantly the observed recovery increase. An interpretation based on the fundamental analysis of Finch and Dobby (1990) and Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2005) is proposed to explain the discrepancy between measurements and predictions obtained from Gorain et al.’s model.INTRODUCTIONIt is generally accepted that the size of the bubbles generated in a flotation cell – a concept usually referred to as “bubble size” – has a significant effect on metallurgical performance. However, a significant number of mineral processing practitioners often question, with valid reasons, the practical benefits of implementing process improvement strategies based on controlling bubble size. “Small” bubbles are often considered to be “favourable”, but how small they need to be for a particular case, or how to adjust operating conditions to control a target bubble size, or whether the bubbles need to be smaller in the first place are questions that usually remain unanswered. Research studies have shown that the flow within feedwells displays a vortical structure and high velocities at the locations where standard tangential inlets force its way into the feedwell swirling flow, producing high local shear rates and flow non-uniformities. These hydraulic deficiencies can be attributed to the discrete feeding through a few entrances, usually one or no more than a few tangential feedpipes, which practically project jets into the vortex within the feedwell. The main consequences are unequal flocculation with aggregates subjected to different amounts of shear and a non-uniform discharge from the feedwell. This paper presents results on the application of CFD and small-scale models to develop a new design that overcomes these problems by using an involute shaped inlet that converges around the feedwell. The result is a new feedwell with enhanced hydraulics that perfectly couples with the FLSmidth E-Duc® Feed Dilution system by protecting the flocculated aggregates that have been carefully produced upstream, and that favors uniform sedimentation conditions within the thickener thanks to a uniform discharge, while maintaining a practical and trouble-free geometry with excellent turndown.

The Tertiary gold deposits of the Hauraki area are predominantly epithermal vein types containing mineral assemblages of quartz, calcite, pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, acanthite and native gold (electrum). Sulphosalt, telluride (eg hessite), seleniferous sulphide and selenide minerals are important locally. Studies of wall rock alteration mineralogy, fluid inclusions in gangue minerals, and sulphur isotopes of sulphide minerals indicate that the ore forming fluids had the following parameters: pH, near neutral at depth but acidic near surface; temperature, predominantly 320 - 270¦C for base metal dominated assemblages, 280 - 200¦C for precious metal dominated assemblages and generally below 200¦C for late stage barite; apparent salinity, six to zero equivalent weight per cent NaCl; and CO2 concentration, generally around&nbsp;one mole per cent CO2. There is fluid inclusion evidence for boiling during mineralisation in some deposits. Moderate values off S2 and FO2 are indicated for base metal and mixed base metal&nbsp;û precious metal assemblages of most deposits by the predominance of pyrite + chalcopyrite over other iron-bearing phases; primary bornite is absent, whereas pyrrhotite, hematite and magnetite rarely occur in the veins. The largest gold&nbsp;û silver deposits formed from solutions in which the sulphur species in solution were predominantly reduced. Near surface environments and some deep, predominantly base metal, deposits were formed from solutions with approximately equal concentrations of oxidised and reduced sulphur species.

"BackgroundThe paper discusses post-mining land use however, the essence of the topic is the emotional motivation behind the decisions related to mining investment and development. Therefore this is not a typical SAIMM technical paper about the science and techniques of post-mining land use. There are already numerous papers written and conferences held on this aspect of post-mine land use; the science is well understood, but the evidence of the practical application of the (environmental, social, and economic) science is sparse. At a recent conference held in November 2017 on the theme of ‘Science, Business, Society Dialogue – linking science, society, business and policy for the sustainable use of abandoned mines in the SADC region’, it was demonstrated through the delivery of several papers on the possible viable options of post-mine land use. The conference was structured in nine sessions, covering the following relevant topics:? Sessions 1 and 2: Nature and magnitude of the problem: raising awareness? Sessions 3 and 4: International experiences in remediation: case studies? Sessions 5, 6 and, 7: Technological solutions: converting liabilities into assets? Session 8: Implementing solutions: social and legal aspects? Session 9: Wrap up, lessons learned: conference resolution.Summaries of the key outcomes of the sessions are available for reference.The aim of this paper, accompanied by the video speech, is to provide a visualization of the possibilities of post-mine land use. Mining contributes approximately 7% to South Africa’s GDP - this is the lowest it has ever been and is attributable to both a diversifying economy and to poor mining and investment policy which has resulted in reduced investment in the sector. The objective of the paper is to highlight the opportunities, for succeeding and diversifying economic activity following mining and mineral extraction which can continue to sustain the livelihoods and wellbeing of communities and societies beyond mining.During mining, very few alternative and local economies develop. Dependence on mining and its value chain prevails until mining ceases. This idea is conveyed in Figures 1a and b."

A case study on foundation engineering through organic soils is presented. Located along the west shore of the Hudson River, site soils consist of random brick fill over a thick layer of peat and organic silts or clays. The organic layer is underlain by medium dense to dense sand with varying amounts of silt. Strong artesian pressures were measured in the sand. A pile foundation system was selected to support all structures. To avoid periodic flooding, new fill must be placed on the existing fill. Large total and differential settlements will occur due to consolidation and secondary compression of the organic soils. This settlement will reduce the allowable pile capacity due to the large negative skin friction in the organic layer; and will necessitate long-term maintenance of the final grade elevation. Pile load tests were performed to determine the allowable compression and uplift capacities, long-term capacities and pile driving criteria.

"Abstract - Wawa has long been a center of mineral exploration activity and diamonds have been reported in the area since the 1930s. However, diamond exploration did not begin in the area in earnest until 1991. In 1993, Sandor Surmacz and Marcelle Hauseux of Saminex began a prospecting program in the area which culminated in their discovery of the "Sandor" diamond occurrence in an outcrop on the east side of the Trans-Canada Highway. They subsequently optioned the property to Spider Resources Inc. who obtained the necessary exploration permits from Algoma Central Corporation and undertook an exploration program. The diamonds at the "Sandor" diamond occurrence are hosted in the matrix of a spessartite dike composed of actinolite, biotite, and albite. Of the 64 similar dikes that have been sampled and analyzed to date, eight have been found to contain a total of 231 diamonds. Most of the diamonds are of high quality, although they are small.The dikes are non-magnetic and do not have any other geophysical characteristic that can be used to differentiate them from the adjacent country rock. All of the dikes discovered to date have been found by prospecting or by geological mapping by the Ontario Geological Survey. The dikes do not contain pyrope garnet or chrome diopside, two of the commonly used kimberlite indicator minerals. Instead, low Mg, high Cr, Zn-rich chromite, and ilmenites of variable composition, some of which lie within the field of kimberlitic Mg-ilmenite compositions, characterize the diamondiferous dikes. A regional-scale till sampling program for heavy minerals, and geochemical analysis of the <0.177 mm fraction, was used to further define the areas of occurrence of the spessartite dikes and to indicate additional areas for diamond prospecting. Heavy minerals in till that were most useful include: actinolite, chromite, and ilmenite. Geochemical analyses of the dikes show them to contain elevated concentrations of Ni and Cr and to be enriched in Ba, Co, V, Ca, Fe, and Mg relative to the surrounding rocks. Elevated concentrations of Ni and Cr in till occur overlying and down-ice of known lamprophyre dikes."
