Episyenites are sub-solidus, quartz-depleted alkali-feldspar-rich rocks. They form veins and lenticular bodies in granitoid rocks and migmatites in a late- to post-orogenic or anorogenic setting. Leaching of quartz is usually a response to a flux of weakly saline hydrothermal solution in circulation cells above cooling intrusions, where sufficient fluid-rock ratios and thermal gradients are achieved. Fluid Si-undersaturation is achieved by rapid cooling within the field of retrograde Si solubility or by temperature and pressure increase outside retrograde conditions. Some quartz may also be consumed in metasomatic reactions and in response to pressure fluctuation in sealed episyenite bodies. The small size and overall rarity of episyenites imply that conditions for episyenite formation are not commonly encountered in the crust. In addition to quartz depletion, episyenites record complex histories of metasomatic alteration and hydrothermal mineral growth. Nearly all episyenites have undergone Na-metasomatism, which may have led to the formation of nearly monomineralic albitite, and which is occasionally followed by late K-metasomatism, phyllic alteration, and argillization. Depending on the effectiveness of later compaction, recrystallization and vug-filling episyenites may preserve the macroscopic porosity formed by quartz dissolution and brittle deformation. Vuggy episyenites can act as significant sinks for metals carried by crustal fluids and host many significant U, Sn, and Au deposits worldwide. Rare earth-critical syenitic fenites around alkaline intrusions share mineralogical and genetic traits with episyenites.

Microtunneling provides a necessary solution for multiple utility crossings associated with the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company?s (MTACC) Eastside Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road. Construction of four TBM tunnels and their approach structures at the eastern end of the project in Sunnyside, Queens required significant modification and expansion of the railroad infrastructure at this location. Maintenance of railroad traffic during project construction is a principal requirement. As a consequence fourteen (14) utility crossing segments are being installed under active traffic by microtunneling methods. Microtunnels were installed in a variety of conditions including depths, types of soils and construction restraints.

When Enron rocked the United States with its Titanic-sized financial accounting scandal, miners and metallurgists were probably too busy on the mine sites in remote locations to wonder about its ripple effect. But then Enron sank, Arthur Andersen tanked and the list of scandals, costing billions of dollars, continued to ripple. Followed by the Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act of 2002 (Sarbanes-Oxley), the recent credit crunch and weak economy, the currents from Enron?s collapse eventually washed right into the mine and the mill. These events placed intense scrutiny on metals production accounting processes as traditional semi-qualitative metal accounting practices provided insufficient credibility and transparency. ?There is growing intolerance of organizations that are unsure about the location of thousands of tonnes of ore, which will typically lose 10 to 15% of their notional value on the way to the concentrator,? Rob Morrison wrote in the opening chapter to An Introduction to Metal Accounting and Balancing. ?If the measurement and forecasts also contain qualitative (fudge) factors, a very real suspicion might emerge about just how much metal might disappear (by theft or misplacement) before detection becomes likely.? Metallurgical accounting, put simply, is the tracking and reporting of the quantity and quality (tonnage and grade, usually) of materials entering or leaving each stage from source to product for a specified accounting period. Lacking an accounting standard, metals accounting in precious metal operations has been performed in an ad-hoc, informal manner, leading to numerous errors and unidentified potentially significant inefficiencies and financial losses. As a result, mining companies are beginning to examine the quality of their metals accounting systems since they form the basis of mining company?s financial accounts and reports. As part of an effort to create that accounting standard in the mineral industry, University of Queensland?s Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre published the textbook An Introduction to Metal Accounting and Balancing in 2009. While development of a textbook and standard are significant steps forward, the challenge in the precious metals industry is in the application of some of these suggested practices. Though improving process transparency and precious metals accounting reporting accuracy is a key driver for change from the financial side, perhaps even more important is the potential benefit to operational performance that comes with better measurement, accounting and reconciliation systems. Loss of precious metals, processing of waste and inefficient mining and processing systems are all problems that are faced in an operation on a daily basis that can help be resolved through improvements in metal accounting and reconciliation. The financial consequences of such operational inefficiencies and bad decisions based on poor information are arguably greater than consequences of fraudulent accounting. Large discrepancies between mine and mill measurement systems that measure the quantity and quality of valuable material currently exist. Some of these are expected because of statistical variation, but inherent random measurement variation is sometimes an insufficient explanation. Though the mill can usually make much better production estimates through their measurement systems (that is, less variation), this knowledge rarely benefits the mine. 3 Moreover, even if the mine does a reasonably good job of estimating expected production at the grade control level (in situ), issues such as blast movement, poor mining practice and inefficient ore/waste classification make for a disconnect between the in situ estimates of the mine and the estimates from the concentrator. This inhibits effective evaluation of the reserve and grade control models using concentrator estimates. Linking the two ends, mining and concentration, is a neglected area sorely in need of an overhaul. Hence the need for improved mine to mill reconciliation ? the area of comparing, balancing and adjusting production estimates between mine and mill for consistency in reporting.

Cement production in Australia approximates 6.5 million tonnes per year. Cement clinker is sourced from 15 plants which operate 28 kilns. Cement grinding is conducted at 14 of the clinker plants plus 7 grinding plants. Average annual capacity per kiln or plant is lower than in many overseas countries, but kilns introduced since 1970's have been of larger size more in keeping with size trends overseas, although still smaller than the large units overseas. Substantial economies in capital and labour costs can be achieved in large production units, particularly with dry process kilns using precalcination techniques in which part of the fuel is introduced in the static preheater section ahead of the kiln while the balance is added to the kiln in a conventional manner. Precalcination techniques have been introduced to the Australian cement industry but as cement transport costs form a major part of supplying diverse market areas, the size of kilns is likely to remain less than maximum owing to balance with distribution costs. The cement industry uses significant amounts of thermal and electrical energy which can be minimised by proper selection of equipment and technology. Labour costs are also significant and can be contained by automation and computer control of the process.

"The Kidd Creek metallurgical site is situated twenty-six kilometres east of Timmins, Ontario. The site consists of a 4.5 niillion tonne per year concentrator, a 127,000 tonne per year electrolytic zinc plant and a 79,000 tonne per year copper smelter/refinery complex.The concentrator commenced operations in 1966 and was expanded to its present capacity in 1978. The zinc plant commenced operations in 1972, and the copper smelter/refinery in 1983.The concentrator tailings, and both liquid and solid waste products from the other plants are disposed of within a 1215 hectare tailings disposal area. Here, a method known as centraljzecl thickened discharge is used to form a stable cone-shaped hill. A low permanent perimeter dyke structure encloses the cone and directs cone run-off and thickener overflow to a treatment pond. After treatment with lime slurry, this neutralized effluent is recycled to the metsite and also discharged into the Porcupine River system.The tailings system has been in operation in its present form since 1972, upon completion of dykes and a 110 metre thickener unit. Underflow densities were continuously increased until thickener overloading became a serious problem. This necessitated the construction of a second 110 metre thickener, which was completed in 1983. Target densities have been achieved without difficulty since then.This paper discusses the operation of the tailings system, reviews past performance, and outlines future operations."

This paper has been written to describe briefly the mining and milling of gold and silver ores in the Black Canyon and neighboring mining districts in Yavapai County, Ariz. The description of present operations is the result of a 10-day visit to the region by the writer in March 1936. The combined 76th Annual Minnesota Section of SME meeting and 64th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium were held April 8and 9, 2003, in Duluth, MN. This year’s theme was “Stakeholders, Partners in Change.” The meeting included four keynote speakers, technical presentations and a tradeshow. Engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers from throughout the United States and eastern Canada attended the meeting. Reflecting the theme of the meeting, all agreed that the mine owners, the government, the community and the employees are all “stakeholders.” They must be “partners in change” for the iron ore mining industry to survive in the region. Compared with past meetings, where improved technology was the primary focus, this year the focus was on the dramatic restructuring of the entire industry. As noted by several of the speakers, “This time, the change is not in technology.”

The ownership, management and employment structures operating in the Australian minerals industry have dynamically evolved during the last 30 years. One of the most dramatic changes, from an exploration and mining geology perspective, is the reduction of in-house geological expertise and an ever increasing reliance on contract and consulting services.For all companies - big and small - two key issues resulting from these changes are the management of core geological intellectual property (IP) and competitive advantage. This is because there are less experienced geologists at exploration and mine sites, there are fewer head-office technical service teams to support mine sites, exploration teams are smaller with less specialists employed, and there is an ever-greater dependence on contract and consulting services.This paper reviews and explores these issues with an industry-wide geological context, then provides a case study of how Newcrest Mining Limited (Newcrest) has dealt with these issues in exploration. Newcrest has grown from a one-mine company with an Australian exploration focus, to a large global company with multiple operations and an extensive international exploration portfolio. Because of the lack of a universally accepted definition or standard for RCA, we are left to our own conventions in the marketplace as to what is most ?effective? or a ?Best Practice? for our own facilities or organization. This lack of uniformity in the application of RCA produces an equal lack of uniformity in the measureable outcomes of RCA on the bottom-line from site to site and industry to industry. What is the definition of success for an RCA? Is it regulatory compliance? Is it some quantifiable measure of bottom-line performance? Is compliance and bottom-line performance the same thing? Can we measure the ROI we receive by doing compliant RCA? These questions must be adequately addressed if any definition of RCA is to be effective on the bottom-line. Like our various Corporate Vision and Mission Statements, what would be our Vision and Mission for RCA? When pondering the answer to this question, we should consider: ? What Key Performance Indicators will the Success of RCA be Linked to? This provides a direct correlation to the corporate dashboard and therefore garners support for the RCA effort when implemented at the sharp end. Not until we know what KPI?s will effectively measure our maintenance and reliability objectives can we begin to establish which opportunities will afford the greatest returns1. ? What Bottom-Line Metrics will be Tracked to Measure the Effectiveness of Our RCA Effort? Will it be increased production, profitability, regulatory compliance, etc.? Will it be decreased injuries/fatalities, claims, customer complaints, risks, etc.? We should be specific about these metrics and their correlation to the metrics on our corporate dashboard. ? What Will Trigger an RCA Investigation? Normally companies will establish quantifiable thresholds to be surpassed before an RCA will be conducted. Examples may be an OSHA recordable injury, a failure event in which production losses exceed $250,000, an equipment failure in excess of $50,000 or a regulatory violation. This is the norm. However, we should realize this is using our RCA skills totally on a reactive basis. High Reliability Organizations (HRO) strive for proaction and they also use RCA proactively. Why can?t we use RCA to analyze why unacceptable risks from an FMEA are so high? It is perfectly applicable yet rarely implemented in this fashion.

MARTA, The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, is building a 53 mile heavy rail transit system to serve the City of Atlanta. Phase A of the Rail System, consisting of approximately 14 miles of at-grade, aerial and subway construction is underway. Metropolitan Atlanta lies in the Piedmont Geologic province of Georgia and is underlain by rocks of essentially granitic and gneissic nature. The soils encountered are primarily silty sands which are in-place weathering products of the parent rock and exhibit their relic structure. In general, these materials have presented no unique construction problems other than those created-by proximity of manmade structures, local availability of ground water, and top of rock elevation. The subway sections of primary interest in this paper consist of hardrock and soft ground tunnels and extensive cut-and-cover sections. The cut-and-cover construction includes excavations as deep as 80 feet. Temporary support systems in these deep excavations consist of soldier pile-timber-lagging or soldier pile-tremie concrete (SPTC) walls with internal bracing or tiebacks. In shallow cut-and-cover sections, where right-of-way economics permitted, slopes were laid back partially or fully to reduce or eliminate the need for bracing systems. global mining boom and in-creased demand for iron ore has lead to a resurgence in the mining industry in Minnesota. At the combined 81st Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 69th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium, April 15-16 in Duluth, MN, this resurgence was the hot topic as new mining projects were featured in the keynote session. The meeting attracted more than 400 mining industry professionals, including engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers from around the world. This year?s theme was ?New Ventures in Mining.? The meeting included concurrent technical papers sessions, a keynote session that featured three distinguished speakers and a panel discussion that provided updates on new mining developments in the state. The Minnesota Section of SME technical papers were presented in concurrent sessions, one on mining and one on mineral processing. The mining session included papers on drilling, ore blending, slope stabilization, dust control and operations management. The mineral processing session included papers on plant-control technology, ball mills, pellet strength and fans. Also offered was an SME short course titled ?Simulation based pellet induration optimization.? The Minnesota Section of SME held its annual business meeting during the conference. The 69th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium technical sessions were held on April 15 and also consisted of concurrent sessions on mining and mineral processing. Mining session topics included logistics management, real-time performance measurement, uses for taconite aggregate and environmental issues. The mineral processing session included papers on ore liberation characteristics, zeta potential studies, induration modeling, fuel optimization and conveyor belts. The combined conference included a tradeshow with more than 80 booth spaces featuring vendors offering products and services to Minnesota?s booming mining industry. More than 900 people, including conference registrants and special invited guests of the vendors, at-tended the tradeshow opening reception. This was the largest trade show in many years ? an indication of the vitality of the mining industry in Minnesota.

The Heavy Media Separation plant operated at Lidsdale siding, eight miles from Lithgow, by the N.S.W. Mining Co. is a product of the Western Machinery Company, of D.S.A.This mill, designed to use finely ground magnetite as the heavy medium, was prefabricated in America and shipped to Australia for erection.First operated early in December, 1951 it has worked on a two-shift basis since. Designed for an input rate of 330 tons per hour, this mill is capable of washing 4 in. x /u in. coal down to its inherent ash by removing all heavy material, including high-ash coal.The principle is quite simple. A stream of raw coal is fed into the separatory vessel which contains a liquid medium, the density of which is adjusted to produce the desired split between coal and refuse. In this bath the lightest coal floats, and all material heavier than the specific gravity of the medium sinks, and is removed separately. Such a system is,. ideally suited to Western coal, as there is no definite splitting point between coal and refuse. Inherent ash of the coal fed to the plant ranges from 8 to 25%, the corresponding density range being from 1.28 up to 1.8.Generally speaking, the higher the density the higher the ash content of the coal.The density in the separatory vessel (hereafter called the cone) can be quickly and easily adjusted throughout the above range to any desired value. Customer requirements, coupled with the economics of washing, dictate the proper specific gravity to be maintained. At present this is held at 1.52...

When the Mining Bill came before the Victorian Legislature not so many months ago, the question arose whether mining managers required education, and to what extent. Some members of the House expressed themselves in a way which appeared to leave the impression that mining managers would be all the better if they were not brought up in a scientific school.To try and prove what we owe to science I will give a short history of colonial mining from the earlier period to the present time and compare results.I believe I am right in saying that South Australia is the pioneer colony in mining and to her belongs the credit of not dnly being the first mining colony, but also that her beginning turned out so successful, as the history of the Burra Burra copper mine will testify. At about the same time a little galena mining was carried on nearer to Adelaide, but as this did not prove a success and was only worked by tributing parties, little notice was taken of it.

During the dissolution of gold in fully aerated cyanide solutions the CN ion is the active agent, and consequently the usual method of evaluating the dissolving power of such solutions is to determine the CN- concentration analytically. The presence in the solutions of copper and/or zinc which themselves form complex cyanides, may result in erroneous conclusions as to the free cyanide ion concentration determined by titration.In this paper the theory of titration of such solutions has been developed, and potentiometric methods have been used to follow the behaviour of complex cyanides of copper and zinc. The results for cuprocyanides show Cu (CN)s to be the most important copper complex, and in addition they explain the reported low rates of solution of gold in copperbearing solutions which when titrated in the usual way, appear to have adequate free cyanide. An explanation of the misleading value of the titration is given, and suggestions for recognition of the condition are offered. Preliminary results for zinc-bearing solutions show that there is no satisfactory end-point for the titration of CN- in excess of that in the complex Zn (CN) 4=, which dissociates to CN and Zn(CN)g-.

Magnetic separation is routinely used in the processing of titaniumminerals, and the efficiency of these operations can be determined bymeasuring the magnetic properties of the process streams. The valuable components in the feed to a titanium minerals plant have specific magnetic susceptibilities ranging from -10-9 m3 kg-1 (zircon) to 10-6 m3 kg-1 (ilmenite). However, in an industrial environment, in which the mineral temperature may range from 20 to 120¦C, it is difficult to measure susceptibilities lower than about 10-7 m3 kg-1. Hence laboratory testing of spot samples from magnetic separators is currently required to obtain accurate performance data. This is an inherently slow process and where feed grades are variable, optimum performance of magnetic separators is generally not achieved.This paper describes the development of an inductance-basedinstrument for measuring very low levels of magnetic susceptibilityon-line. The signal from the instrument can be used for process control purposes to maintain optimum magnetic separator performance.A prototype instrument has been installed in the zircon scavengercircuit in an Australian titanium minerals plant. The circuit consists of a roll magnetic separator treating a feed consisting mainly of monazite and stained zircon. The monazite-rich magnetic fraction is returned to the mine site for disposal, while the non-magnetic fraction is recycled to the zircon wet circuit. Splitter positions in the separator are adjusted when the final zircon product fails to meet specification, or the magnetic fraction contains more than 30 per cent zircon. Weekly composite grain counts show that sub-optimal operation of the magnetic separator results in significant zircon losses into the magnetics fraction.Using the instrument, the zircon content of this stream can now beaccurately determined from the measured magnetic susceptibility,provided a correction for the effect of mineral temperature is applied using the Curie - Weiss relationship.

Neutralization with lime is a simple, cheap, and effective means of treating acid raffinates from uranium processing to' raise the pH, reduce the concentrations of dissolved salts (including heavy metal impurities), and remove amine by adsorption. Two-stage neutralization, using limestone in the first stage at approximately pH 4 and lime in the second, lIlay be advantageous.Lime neutralization of mffinates in the pH range 7 to 8· 5 generally reduced the radium ·concentration to 10 to 200 pCi 1-1, but ·there was considerable scatter in the experimental data. The radium concentration was further reduced to less than 3 pCi 1-1 by co-precipitation of barium (radium) sulphate with 10 mg Ba (as barium chloride) per litre of raffinate. Adsorption of radium on barytes was -also effective in reducing the radium concentration in neutralized raffinate to less than 3 pCi 1-1.The radium concentration of pit water was readily reduced to less than 3 pCi 1-1 when pit water containing 0·01 M sulphate as ammonium, calcium, or sodium sulphate was treated with 20 mg Ba per litre of pit water.Adsorption on barytes was also effective in removing radium from pit water containing 0·03 M sulphate.

"The exploration of seamounts south of the Azores during the EMEPC/Açores/G3/2007 campaign allowed for the collection of 30 Fe-Mn crusts from the Atlantis, Great Meteor, Small Hyeres, Irving and Plato seamounts, as well as from the East Azores Fracture Zone. These were the first samples of Fe-Mn crusts studied from these seamounts. The Fe-Mn crusts were analyzed using multiple analytical methods.The crusts are fairly homogeneous, showing typical textures for this type of occurrences. The Fe/Mn ratio, patterns and concentrations in rare earth elements, and the great homogeneity of the crusts lead to the conclusion that they have a hydrogenetic origin, precipitating directly from seawater. Although the content in Fe and Mn of the crusts is consistent with data available for the Atlantic, the mean concentration of Co is comparable to the average values for the Pacific. Cu and Ni show lower values than the ones known for the Pacific."

Alluvial gold was discovered on Sudest Island in 1888, and by 1893, an official production of 10 000 oz had been won by expatriate miners from shallow alluvial and colluvial workings. Hardrock sources were located and while one was developed at Mt Adelaide, production is unknown. Sudest Island comprises mostly phyllites and lesser coarse grained rocks which are cut by metamorphic quartz veins and basic (locally shoshonitic) intrusives. Sheared and altered basalts and serpent- inites represent are believed to be elements of an ophiolitic suite inferred to be associated with metamorphic core complex development and thus similar to tectonic environments on Misima and the D'Entrec- asteaux Islands. No epithermal-style quartz suggestive of a target similar to that on Misima Island has been identified on Sudest. A hardrock source for the alluvial and colluvial gold is interpreted to be metamorphic quartz veins similar to those in the Bendigo- Ballarat Zone of central Victoria, possibly remobilising gold derived from the meta- sedimentary and meta-igneous rock pile. The present focus is on development of a small scale alluvial gold mining operation in conjunction with exploration for hardrock targets. This latter programme remains at a reconnaissance stage.
