Underground booster fan installations are currently employed in hundreds of coal mines throughout the world. Such installations, when properly designed and maintained, have proven to be safe and effective tools to provide desirable airflow volumes on sections or in areas of mines where the ventilation requirements exceed the capacity of the main fan system. In cases where an airshaft cannot be justified due to surface topography, depth of cover, or limited reserves a booster fan can serve the same purpose, be operational in a fraction of the time and at a substantially reduced cost. Booster fans are currently non-existent in U.S. coal mines. This is primarily due to lack of acceptance by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), which has failed to acknowledge the merits of a booster fan system. Also, the absence of booster fan provisions in Part 75 of the federal regulations has led to the misconception that booster fans are legally prohibited in U.S. coal mines. In 1986, Jim Walter Resources, Inc. (JWR) developed and submitted to MSHA a plan to install and operate an underground booster fan at the No. 7 Mine. Detailed computer simulations were used to substantiate JWR1s position, that the booster fan could effectively provide the needed airflow on a developing section without adversely affecting ventilation in other areas of the mine. JWR also realized that numerous safeguards and operating procedures were essential for providing a safe system. Thus, safety features such as electrical interlocking, independent power supply, remote atmospheric monitoring, etc., were incorporated into the plan. This paper is a case-study that discusses JWR's proposed plan to install and operate an underground booster fan at No. 7 Mine. Unfortunately, MSHA's continued negative response has prevented implementation of the plan.

This paper examines the effect of bucket geometry (cutting blade profile, floor profile, and blade thickness), speed, motor power output, and muckpile particle sizes on bucket penetration and draft for rubber tire loaders. The work uses a 1:16 scaled model of a load-haul-dump in full factorial experiments to examine the effect of the variables on penetration and maximum draft. The results show that speed and motor output are positively correlated to penetration and draft; muckpile particle size is positively correlated to penetration and negatively correlated to draft (p < 0.0014). The results show that buckets with a semi-spade cutting nose profile yield the highest penetration (mean 118.30 mm) followed by those with the spade (mean 108.88 mm), which also yield higher penetration than those straight blades (mean 95.19 mm). Bucket floor profile and blade thickness had no significant effect on penetration or draft. Also, we determined that increasing the speed and motor power output, simultaneously, can reduce bucket penetration. Thus, operators should not waste energy for no additional gain or even loss in bucket penetration. Also, the work finds speed and motor power output each combine with muckpile particle sizes to affect bucket penetration. This research furthers our understanding of the effectiveness of different bucket geometries in improving penetration and reducing draft for rubber tire loaders.

The level of steel consumption per capita is one of the principal indicators of a country&apos;s standard of living. It is no coincidence that the materially advanced nations possess viable iron and steel industries to provide a reliable and economic source of steal for the manufacturing industries. No other metal is as dominantly important in manufacturing as steel. The blast furnace - steel furnace complex based on coking coal, ferrous scrap and iron ore - continues to be the principal steel-producing method. Less important is the electric furnace method based on scrap, In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the many direct reduction processes that are not dependent on coking coal but usually produce a product for further refining in steel furnaces. No matter which series of processes are used, iron ore is essentially the only source of virgin iron units. Thus, to such a vital and capital-intense industry as steel, access to a relatively inexpensive, long- term supply of iron ore is essential.

Phelps Dodge’s Candelaria copper-gold mine is located 20 km (12miles) south of Copiapó in northern Chile’s Atacama province (Region III) (Fig. 1). The Candelaria Mine is about 800 km (500miles) north of Santiago and 75 km (47 miles) east of the Pacific Ocean. Its elevation is 600 m (1,970 ft) above sea level. The Copiapó River Valley is 6 km (4 miles) northeast of the mine site. It is the only major source of water in this arid region. The average rainfall is 14mm/a (0.5 in./year). During 1995, the mine produced 521.4 kt (574,800 st) of copper concentrate containing 150 kt (165,000 st) of salable copper and 3 t (98,800 oz) of gold. The 1995 unit cash cost was less than 50 cents/lb of copper. This makes Candelaria one the world’s lowest cost copper producers.

Syncrude Canada Ltd. is currently mining over 120 million tons per year of overburden and oil sands to produce 40 million barrels per year of synthetic crude oil. Production increases are planned. This paper reviews the technical and economic assessments of feeder breaker applications in both ore and waste mining which led to an extensive testing and development program and finally to the procurement of full scale production equipment.

The Pardee Chemical Feed Shaft Project involves construction of two new chemical feed shafts to improve raw water treatment capabilities at the East Bay Municipal Utility District’s (EBMUD) Pardee Reservoir in Valley Springs, California. The project includes construction of two 250-foot deep, 16-inch diameter stainless steel chemical feed shafts that penetrate an existing 8-foot diameter concrete lined conveyance tunnel. The design approach required the shafts be installed using top-down drilling methods and within a strict verticality tolerance (0.1%). Innovative precision drilling techniques ensured that the shafts penetrated the tunnel in their planned locations and the installed chemical feed lines would function as designed. Challenges included extremely limited access to the tunnel because of a requirement to maintain the tunnel in service during construction. This paper discusses the overall project’s design and construction approach, including unanticipated conditions that the project team faced and how these conditions were managed and overcome through collaboration between the contractor, designer, and owner.

Oklahoma is the only; state in the nation that is currently producing iodine. The iodine is extracted from iodine-rich natural brines being pumped from deep wells drilled into Pennsylvanian sandstones in the Anadarko basin of northwestern Oklahoma. Woodward Iodine Corp., started in 1977, was the first plant in the United States built for iodine recovery since the 1930s. At present, three companies are operating four iodine-producing facilities in northwestern Oklahoma. The combined production of these facilities, 1,321,000 kg in 1997, is about 26% of the U.S. annual consumption. Iodine is present in concentrations ranging from less than 100 ppm (parts per million) to as much as 1,560 ppm in brines in various Paleozoic strata in the subsurface of northwestern Oklahoma; these concentrations are exceptionally high, and are well above those of any other known brines in the world. Strata with the highest iodine content in the area (Mississippian limestones) have low permeabilities, and thus would yield only small amounts of brine. On the other hand, the lower Morrow sandstones (Lower Pennsylvanian) have a relatively high permeability and are capable of yielding large quantities of brine that average 300-350 ppm iodine. The Morrow brine reservoir was deposited in shallow-water-marine and intertidal-shelf environments and now is buried 6,000-10,000 ft below the land surface. Production is localized to Morrow channel deposits confined to an Early Pennsylvanian paleovalley that is 1-2 mi wide, is about 70 mi long, and is referred to informally as the "Woodward trench." All three companies are producing iodine-rich brines from Morrow sandstones in three different parts of the Woodward paleovalley, and one of the companies also is extracting iodine from oil-field brines coming from several petroleum reservoirs near Dover, about 80 mi east of Woodward. The basic extraction method employed by Woodward Iodine Corp. was used in Louisiana and California operations in the late 1920s. This method is commonly called the air-stripping process. Lower Morrow brine containing dissolved sodium iodide is pumped to the plant through a series of pipelines, where by-product natural gas is separated and processed. The brine is then acidified and subsequently oxidized with chlorine to convert the iodide to iodine. The iodine is air stripped and reabsorbed with sulfur dioxide and water, converting it to hydriodic acid, or process liquor. The process liquor is then processed, using chlorine once again, to crystallize the iodine as a solid. This is then melted and frozen to form a solid product, which is packaged in 110-lb (50-kg) drums and shipped to end users throughout the world.

Introduction Autogenous, semi-autogenous, and conventional grinding circuits are used to process ores. Current emphasis, though, is towards the use of the first two systems. The reason is the generally lower initial investment required for an autogenous or semi-autogenous circuit as compared to a conventional comminution circuit. However, the effect of operating costs that will significantly affect overall comminution economics is not considered in this evaluation. About 70% of the energy in a mineral processing plant is used in the comminution circuit. Until the 1974 oil embargo, energy was relatively inexpensive. Since that time, the cost of energy has escalated 40-fold. As a result, energy cost now forms a significant portion of operating costs in comminution. According to a survey conducted by General Electric Co. (Powers, 1982), the price of electricity will continue to rise 15% to 20% per year, in spite of the current oil glut. Both autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding circuits consume more energy than the conventional comminution circuit. Higher consumption ranging from 16% to 35% has been reported in the literature (Bassarear, 1982; Gjerdrum. 1979; Betts, 1982; and Christie, 1979). Consequently, even a small increase in energy costs is likely to have a significant impact on operating costs. Therefore, the economic decision of selecting an optimal comminution circuit is important. More than ever before, it is now critical to include in the evaluation of communition circuits not only the capital costs, but also the operating costs; in particular, the expected energy cost over the life of the operation. Failure to do this may lead to a less than optimal comminution circuit. Design A comminution system should be designed only after bench-scale or pilot plant testing of a representative sample. Conventional crushing and grinding circuits can be designed on the basis of the Bond Work Index (Rowland and Kjos, 1980). Over the years, sizing of full-scale rod and ball mills from Bond Work Index data has become well established. Autogenous and semi-autogenous mills cannot be sized based on bench-scale tests. Pilot plant tests are necessary to determine the amenability of the ore, critical size buildup, and power requirements. For this study, conventional and semi-autogenous grinding circuits were designed for ore throughput of 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, and 90 kt/d (13,200, 26,400, 39,600, 52,000, 79,200, and 99,000 stpd). Rod and ball mills were scaled up on the basis of the Bond Work Index. A two-stage semi-autogenous grinding circuit was designed on the basis of pilot plant test results. The determination of the surface area which may be impacted by underground mining is an important consideration in subsidence engineering. A number of parameters have been utilized to identify this influence area, most notably the angles of draw and break. This paper discusses the implications of selecting an appropriate "damage angle" for defining a potential damage area due to mining, within which surface structures may be impacted Furthermore, the influence of both mining and geological factors, such as mining width and depth and overburden lithology, on this angle is examined, using the Surface Deformation Prediction System (S.D.P.S) software. Finally, recommendations are given for applying these concepts in subsidence control.

The response of feldspar flotation to tallow diamine dioleate collector in the presence of sulfuric acid is studied using batch flotation experiments. Application of this non-hydrofluoric acid (non-HF) reagent system in the flotation of mineralogically and chemically different feldspar ores is compared with that of the conventional hydrofluoric acid system. The dependence of flotation recovery and concentrate grade on feed particle size distribution, conditioning time, pulp density, and pH, combined variation of collector and acid addition rates, sodium hydroxide concentration in the collector solution, and initial pulp pH prior to conditioning is studied. The results have been discussed in relation to applicability of the non-HF system to plant trials, and the nature of the collector adsorption in the selective flotation of feldspar.

Since 1973 when the first edition of the SME Mining Engineering Handbook was published, many significant changes have occurred in the US mining industry. The industry went through a fairly prosperous period immediately after 1973, but then many economic pressures came to bear on mining companies, particularly in the metal and coal branches of the industry. These pressures changed both the mining methods used and the general economics of the mining methods. As a result, the industry today is different in many ways titan it was in 1973. A general summary of some of the more important changes that have come about will be provided here as well as some assessment of the effects of these changes on the choices of mining methods. In the metal mining industry, the most significant trends were increased surface mining, the use of larger and more efficient equipment, and increased technology and automation. The primary impetus for these changes was unprecedented competition from foreign producers. In many cases, this competition came about because of the nationalization of foreign mines and the tendency for these mines to become a source of foreign exchange. The ability to process complex precious metal sulfide concentrates containing antimony and arsenic, in an economic and environmentally safe manner, is an important problem facing the mining industry in the united states. Preliminary experiments have been performed to evaluate the possibility of treating a complex sulfide concentrate to recover antimony and precious metals while fixing the arsenic and sulfur as calcium arsenate and calcium sulfate. The process involves the oxidation of the antimony and arsenic minerals in the presence of soda ash (to collect the sulfur dioxide and to keep the antimony and arsenic from forming volatile compounds), the selective leaching of the arsenic from the roast calcine with a heated caustic solution, the precipitation of the arsenic and sulfate with calcium hydroxide and/or calcium chloride, the reduction of the residual antimony (collecting the precious metals), fuming of the metal to form a marketable antimony oxide, and crucible reduction of the residue to obtain a gold and silver dore. Experiments have been performed to evaluate the first stage of this process. Batch experiments were performed using synthetic concentrates of stibnite and arsenopyrite. Variables that were studied included: mixture weight fractions, temperature, gas flow rate, oxygen partial pressure and time. All of the off gas dust and sulfur containing gases were collected and analyzed. The roast solid residue was subjected to arsenic leach tests and the leach solutions were subjected to arsenic and sulfate precipitation tests.

"The development of fracture zones in surrounding rock mass has significant impact on the stability of underground mine roadways. Detection of the fracture zones is of compelling importance for maintaining roadway stability as well as for safe and speedy excavation of the roadways. This paper presents a study conducted at Dong Bao Wei underground coal mine, where the roadways were developed in diabase rock mass. The roadways suffered severe damages, including sloughing and excessive floor heaving. The borehole imaging technique was applied in the study to observe and detect fracture zone development surrounding the roadway openings. Based on the borehole imaging studies, new roadway support systems were proposed to improve the stability. INTRODUCTION At the Dong Bao Wei Coal Mine three main roadways of the west wing were excavated. The three roadways had semicircle arch cross sections and were at a depth of 650 meters, each being about 750 meters in length. The roadways were driven through a section of thick diabase intrusion, which was softened by water with reduced strength and may turn into powder form under weathering. Site investigation indicated that the roadways in diabase intrusion zone were badly damaged due to severe deformation, and very serious roadway sidewall sloughing and spalling accompanied by severe floor heave often occurred.(Figures 1 and 2) In order to ensure the normal use of the roadway, undercuts were excavated. However, this operation seriously affected the roadway construction progress and increased the amount of roadway support operations as well as the roadway maintenance costs. Furthermore, a roof fall accident occurred in nearby drilling site. The investigation indicated insufficient support provided for the roadways which imposed significant safety hazards and would have serious impact to mining production and subsequent mining activities.The support of the main roadways is a critical task and is the focus of the underground opening excavation work at the mine, since more than 40 years of service life is required from these main roadways. For these roadways, large cross sections with high degree of stability and minimal amount of deformation should be maintained. Therefore, providing sufficient and appropriate roadway supports is of significant importance to the coal mine. In this paper, in order to optimize the roadway supporting system, studies were carried out on the geological structures, lithological characters, roof bolt anchoring features and suitable anchoring layers. The studies were aimed at ensuring the stability of mine roadways, reducing the roadway maintenance costs and providing a safe mine passageway for orderly production and progressive development of the mine"

Several attempts have been made in the past sixty or so years to commerciliaze the vast oil shale deposits of the United States of America. However, the industry has yet to become viable and economic. To date, it has not been possible to produce oil from the oil shales at a competitive price when compared to the oil produced from oilfields by conventional methods. However, the development work has been quite fruitful in furthering the art of thick bed mining and technology of in situ retorting. The in situ method has the potential of recovering oil from thick beds and the resource recovery potential is much greater than that from underground mining and surface retorting. In situ methods require that the shales/ marlstones be fragmented &apos; in place to induce adequate porosity and permeability to allow in situ&apos; heating of the fragmented shales. This can be accomplished by using explosives. However, it has been found that the existing blasting systems, though very efficient, are somewhat lacking. The explosive become insensitive when shot in multiple vertical decks. They can also become insensitive when spaced horizontally at close proximity to other charges. Also, since the blasting is done in a very limited free face, this limits the delay time that can be allowed between charges. Consequently it is not always possible to predict the performance of the blasting system on a routine basis. Furthermore, since it is not possible to undertake secodary blasting, it is imperative that the blast design function properly. Recent, successful retorting by Occidental Petroleum Company of retorts seven and eight suggests that some of these problems may have been overcome. This paper addresses some aspects of in situ retorting and problems those have impeded the development of a viable oil shale industry in the U.S.A.

Draglines are extensively used in Indian mines. A dragline has more than hundreds of components, and it is complex in design. This study involves the evaluation of the reliability of a draglines system using a Bayesian network (BN) model mapped from a fault tree. Based on the BN inference, the reliability estimation, the diagnosis, and the sensitivity analysis are performed. In this paper, the overall reliability of the dragline is estimated as well as the contribution of the subsystems or components in the overall reliability evaluation is presented. The results showed that the three subsystems of the dragline, namely, the dragging mechanism, electrical auxiliary subsystem, and swing mechanism, have the lowest reliability (82.17%, 87.98%, and 91.30%, respectively) after an hour of operation. The overall reliability at the first hour of machine operation is estimated to be 62.03%. The study may provide a reference for future work related to the dragline machine’s reliability design and maintenance.

The goal of the drill bit consumption study was to develop an equation(s) based on various components that affect drill bit wear and use that equation(s) to estimate the consumption of bits during production drilling. Drill bit data from various geographic locations were compiled and used to develop linear regression equations using the Microsoft Excel software package. Multiple drill bit consumption equations were developed and statistical analysis was used to verify the accuracy of those equations. The equations will allow mining companies to more accurately forecast drill bit consumption when evaluating new mine properties. This capability becomes increasingly beneficial to forecasting as the cost of consumables increases.

"One of the main problems for storing of the tailings is acidity occurrence due to several factors such as existence of sulfuric minerals and also the pollution in seepage waters by mobilization of metal ions, which holds great risks in terms of environmental regulations. Because of these specified reasons, tailing materials to be used in a SPD formula should have comply with some specifications. Among these properties; oxygen content, temperature, matrix suction and pH are the most important parameters. In the study, the relationships between the parameters mentioned are investigated to reveal optimum paste design layout. The lowest amount of seepage water obtained from the paste layers in the pilot cabinet was found as 2150 ml from 3rd layer. As for the maximum seepage water and the average of the all 11 layers were found as 4909 ml from 6th layer and 3273 ml respectively. The reactions occurring according to the oxidation, as seen at seepage water of second and third layers, decreased the pH of system to the under of 7 value. Additionally, when the seepage water of first layer’s EC value is 2.93 mS/cm, the EC value of second layer is increased at 3.54 mS/cm. The other parameters are evaluated with the obtained results of the tests to determine the optimum storing conditions for SPD.INTRODUCTION Conventional waste disposal methods, although widely used, pose great environmental risks. One of the most important issues is acid mine drainage (AMD). Tailings of metallic mines contain heavy metals, aggressive chemicals and hazardous materials. In the presence of oxygen and water, an oxidation reaction can occur, causing a decrease in pH of the environment, and heavy metals that are present in the environment can dissolve easily. Subsequently, heavy metals can pollute underground water basins, creating a great amount of danger for the ecology and potable water resources. Another important risk associated with conventional waste disposal methods is accidents related to the waste dam. Higher volumes of water and tailings (usually 15% solids and 85% water by weight) are sent to waste dams, making it very difficult to control the stability of the dam under conditions such as static and dynamic loads (seismic activities, vibrations caused by blasting, etc.), flooding, and seepage. In case of an accident or failure, the spread of great amounts of mud containing hazardous chemicals and heavy metals can harm the environment of the dam site significantly (Bascetin et al., 2014). In the paste technology, depending on the type of ore, tailings used in the paste mixture can contain sulphide minerals (such as pyrite and pyrrhotite). These minerals are known to be reactive with water and oxygen to produce acidity (sulphuric acid)."

Every underground coal mine in the United States must deploy and operate a wireless communication and tracking system. This paper addresses the reliability and availability of an installed tracking system and the communications infrastructure that supports it. A particular interest is the requirements for the systems to operate continuously without failure after a mine disaster for 96 hours, and the requirements in the MINER Act for the tracking systems to be ?calculated to be serviceable? and the communications systems ?redundancy?. These requirements imply a certain reliability and availability. This paper describes a quantitative way to assess these systems requirements, using the tools that are available and commonly used by the Reliability, Maintainability, & Availability community.

Cobalt, nickel, and manganese can be recovered quickly, cleanly, and selectively from cobalt-rich manganese crust by leaching in dilute acid solutions in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Common selective precipitation methods can then be used to recover these metals from the leach liquor. The leaching reaction produces only oxygen as a byproduct, and the waste residue from leaching was tested and found to be non-hazardous under existing EPA specifications. The leaching process is effective in either fresh water or seawater. This research is a part of the Bureau of Mines program to identify the mineral resources of the Exclusive Economic Zone and devise methods for recovering their valuable components.
