Mineral property valuations to be used for Canadian securities regulatory purposes must comply with CIMVal1. The technical basis for a CIMVal report is the same as that required for a technical report that complies with NI 43-1012. NI 43-101 describes the content to be covered in a technical report, while also covering other requirements, one of which is that the report should be based on a property visit. CIMVal is based on five tenets that the valuator must follow: ? Materiality. ? Independence. ? Transparency. ? Competence. ? Reasonableness. Upon its adoption by CIM Council in 2003, it was hoped that the new CIMVal code would be adopted without change by the several Canadian regulators.

Thallium is not significantly removed from mining influenced water (MIW) through conventional treatment in hydroxide precipitation plants. We experimentally investigated modifications to hydroxide precipitation schemes to concurrently remove thallium. Our goal was to determine cost effective and efficient hydroxide precipitation process modifications for thallium removal. Strategies for removal targeted multiple mechanisms including sorption, co-precipitation and/or oxidation of monovalent thallium. Modifications were tested in batch and included oxidant evaluation and the role of manganese. Removal of thallium was enhanced by the addition of permanganate as well as oxygen by aeration. In addition, contact with retained solids and the initial manganese concentration played an important role in the extent of thallium removal observed. This paper reports on our findings and discusses the implications in the removal of thallium with minor modifications to the hydroxide precipitation process.

Stillwater Mining Company’s, Nye Operation has been producing PGM concentrate since 1987.Several expansions have allowed for increasing capacity from the initial rate of 500 tons per day, to its present capacity of 3,000 tons per day. The expansions were performed with minimal impact upon production and maximum utilization of the existing equipment. The latest expansion incorporates a 6’ X 18’ SAG mill, 13’ X 20’ Ball mill, pebble crusher, rougher flotation cells, 1250 Hp tertiary grinding mill, middling and scavenger flotation cells, and cleaner column flotation cells. This paper will describe the concentrator flow sheet, and controls for improved concentrator performance.

Weak rock is an important consideration in tunnel design and construction due to the difficult ground conditions that are often encountered. Nevertheless, when conditions are favorable high advance rates can be achieved leading to economical tunnel construction. Successful construction of a tunnel in weak rocks depends on correctly anticipating the behavior of these unique materials. The objective of this paper is to provide guidelines that can be used to accurately classify the performance of weak rock in tunnels.

The Leeville underground mine has been in operation since 2006 and currently produces 3,175 t (3,500 st) of ore per day with an average gold grade of 12.6 g/t (0.4 opst). The mine has a large horizontal extent of 762 by 152 m (2,500 by 500 ft) and a vertical extent of 6 to 61 m (20 to 200 ft). Based on the characteristics of the ore bodies, the deposits are divided into several mining zones. The geotechnical properties of mining zones are also different from one zone to another. A successful geotechnical collection system is very important for mining design and operation in the Leeville underground mine. Three methods are used to collect the geotechnical data in the Leeville underground mine: • Core logging. Most geotechnical data are collected by this method, which is based on exploratory drills and estimates parameters for rock quality designation (RQD), fracture frequency (FF), compressive strength and rock mass rate (RMR). • Site investigation. This method collects more detailed geotechnical data and geostructural data from work done in the underground drifts and stopes. Parameters of RQD, FF, compressive strength, RMR, rock tunneling quality index (Q) and geostructural data are estimated. • Data collected from drill holes made for the critical infrastructure facilities. This method provides the best detailed geotechnical information for areas in which the critical infrastructure located. A complete geotechnical database has been constructed using this geotechnical data collection system. The database can be used for the design of ground support, stopes and stope blasts, among other critical applications.

Spatial variance of rock properties is an important characteristic of rock which addresses the heterogeneity of mechanical and physical properties and their effect on underground mining. Assessing spatial variance can be useful for both locating potential difficult grounds and performing reliability analysis in the mining support system. This study shows a microscale numerical model for rock material based on continuum mechanics. To consider the spatial correlation factor of mechanical properties in realistic rock mass, this study introduces a spatial correlation concept into the traditional type III extreme value distribution model. Based on the improved microscale random model, we conducted a series of numerical uniaxial compressive tests and one longwall mine model to investigate the progressive failure of rock. The results show that spatial correlation factor can significantly affect the load-deformation curves and fracture patterns. The spatial variance model was applied to a longwall mine that included several cutting sequences to observe the influence of the spatial variance on roof behavior. The cohesion and friction random fields induced failure that propagated randomly through the immediate roof in different entries. The results showed that the spatial variance provides an accurate prediction of erratic roof falls in coal mines.

Mining is likely to be targeted by The United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) as one of its key enforcement targets for fiscal year 2002-2003. Identifying the mining industry as an enforcement target, coupled with an increase in enforcement activity in recent years, places each mining operation at increased risk of receiving enforcement attention. A properly developed and implemented Environmental Management System (“EMS”) tailored for your operation is invaluable in reducing the risk of incurring liability for non-compliance. At the heart of an effective EMS is an audit program that checks the company’s compliance with environmental requirements. In addition, audit privilege (in select states), voluntary self-disclosure, and the attorney-client privilege serve as very effective tools for managing those liabilities that may arise during auditing a well-developed program. Of course, these latter tools are effective only if the auditing program is properly structured and properly managed. EPA and some states also provide varying degrees of immunity for environmental violations that are voluntarily disclosed in writing by the company. However, self-disclosure laws and policies typically prescribe stringent requirements for parties seeking to take advantage of them. For example: U.S. EPA has recently extended the time period in which to provide full written self-disclosure to 21 days. However, U.S. EPA’s revised Self-Disclosure guidance also addresses when a company obtains knowledge of a violation for purposes of triggering the 21-day clock and specifically extends the knowledge requirement to include the company’s agents and consultants. This expansion increases the difficulty companies may have in clearly defining and managing when they obtained knowledge. The present U.S. production of bromine is from inland brines located in Arkansas and Michigan. The most concentrated domestic brines (up to 5,000 ppm bromide) are situated in Arkansas. Less concentrated brines (about 2,500 ppm bromide) are located in Michigan. The amount of bromine sold or used in the United States came from three companies operating in Arkansas and Michigan. Arkansas, with its six plants, was the leading U.S. state in bromine production. Bromine being the leading mineral commodity valuewise produced in the state. The Michigan bromine production was a byproduct of magnesium compounds production.

In terms of the technical problems of rib spalling in large mining height coal face, a long-distance advanced pre-grouting layer flexible reinforcement technology is proposed in this paper. Based on the mechanism and failure mode of rib spalling in the coal face, the mechanical properties of the aluminum plastic composite pipe were analyzed by using the tensile and compression experiment. The deformation and strength characteristics of “flexible pipe + grouting” specimens were studied by uniaxial compression test, splitting test, and shear test. The UDEC numerical simulation software was used to simulate the reinforcement effect of “flexible pipe + grouting” at different positions. Combined with the field application, the feasibility of long-distance advanced pre-grouting layer flexible reinforcement technology was verified. The test results show the following: The coal face has the characteristics of brittle and large deformation. The aluminum plastic composite pipe has the characteristics of good elongation and tensile strength, which can endure the large deformation of the coal face. The “flexible pipe + grouting” can improve the tensile and shear strength of coal. The UDEC numerical simulation analysis indicated that the grouting hole layout of “flexible pipe + grouting” has a significant difference in the reinforcement effect of the coal face. Compared with single row grouting reinforcement, the reinforcement effect of double row grouting holes 1.5 m and 3.0 m away from the roof is better. According to the field application, it is feasible to use aluminum plastic composite pipe as a flexible grouting pipe to reinforce coal seam with 80–100 m long-distance pre-grouting. Long-distance advanced pre-grouting layer flexible reinforcement technology can improve the daily production of coal and reduce the support cost of the coal face. As a new method of reinforcement, long-distance layered flexible reinforcement has a significant effect on the prevention and treatment of rib spalling in large mining height coal face.

Newmont has been producing gold from the Carlin Trend for over 45 years. Naturally the focus, scale and complexity of the operations have changed considerably over this time. Newmont discovered and developed the Carlin Main ore body which is located about 32 km (20 miles) north of Carlin Nevada. The property was developed as a one mine one gold mill treatment plant operation which produced about 6,200 kg (200,000 Troy ounces) of dorè gold bars per year. The initial mine, mill and gold refining facilities were relatively small in comparison to today?s standards. The milling circuit used the Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation process to recover dissolved gold and prepare a concentrated precious metal ?precipitate? to be melted into a dorè bar for sale.

Considerable controversy seems to exist over the extent and nature of information that should be provided in design-build type contracts. Much of this controversy may relate to the types of owners, ranging from private industry to state and federal agencies that are implementing design-build. Philosophies for the development of geotechnical information ranges from no information to a thorough investigation approaching that needed for final design. Several recent projects, such as the Channel Tunnel in Europe, Whittier Tunnel in Alaska, Tren Urbano in Puerto Rico, and Sound Transit in Seattle have taken varying approaches to providing and interpreting geotechnical information for bidders. The pros and cons of these various methods are discussed and assessed.

The rate of hydration influences many important physical properties of gypsum. Previous research examined the rate of gypsum hydration and related this to compressive strength and microstructure development using BET specific surface area analysis. The analysis of gypsum porosity in combination with BET surface area and rate of hydration remains to be done. In the present study, mesoporosity is analyzed using the numerical method of Barrett, Joyner and Halenda (BJH) to gain a greater understanding of gypsum hydration and microstructure development. The rate of hydration has a significant effect on mesoporosity of the gypsum matrix. The results reveal the effect of mesoporosity and hydration rate on some macro physical properties of gypsum.

This paper presents an innovative ground support solution developed to construct a tunnel cross-passage for the MUNI Metro Turnback (MMT) Project. A “soft center” jet grouting approach was designed to provide solid ground support while maintaining a soft center to allow for hand-mining of a 2.44 m (8 ft.) wide, 3.66 m (12 ft.) tall and 4.6 m (15 ft.) long cross-passage through soft Bay Mud. Prohibitive costs and schedule impacts associated with mining under compressed air (at the time being used for main tunnel construction) were the catalysts to search for alternative methods for cross-passage construction. Limited surface disruption, relatively low costs, ease of subsequent excavation, nominal schedule impacts and proven local success of jet grouting were key factors in selecting and designing this method of ground support.

Treatment of plant effluent including waste water and associated soluble and insoluble substances, is of a primary concern of many process industries including mineral processing operations. The major objective of such treatment is the removal of such impurities which can interfere with the process through the use of recycled water, and/or to comply with environmental ordinances. For example, Ramirez and Clements (1978) state that molybdenum contents in the range of 19 mg/1 eventually poison ion exchange resigns used for the extraction of uranium. In addition, recent restrictions by the EPA on molybdenum discharge values for mining waste water necessitate removal of this metal to (0.5-1.0 mg/1).

Improved liberation and flotation of kerogen from eastern oil shale were accomplished with high-temperature grinding and a1 so with the addition of fuel oil during the grinding stage. Liberation measurements indicated that possible coalescence and aggregation phenomenon of kerogen particles during grinding may reflect this behavior. Additionally, ultrasonic treatment of the rougher concentrate prior to cleaning improved the quality of separation.

Electric power generation remains the greatest market for coal in the United States. In 1967, about 272 million tons of coal, amounting to over 51 percent of total coal consumption, were burned to satisfy this nation's hugh demand for power. The size of the utility market is currently five times that of 1941 and continues to grow with the demand for more and more energy. A major reason for this strong market has been the ability of the coal industry to supply a superior product for combustion while maintaining competitive prices. Now that the coal industry is engaged in intensive competition with nuclear power for future energy demand, it becomes ever more imperative that superior coal products are produced. One important problem when burning some coals is a liquid phase corrosive attack on boiler tube metal in the superheater and reheater areas of the furnace where steam temperatures may exceed 1050°F.

Introduction In 1967, Tenneco acquired Kern County Land Co. The primary reason for the acquisition was to obtain Kern's agricultural, manufacturing, and oil interests. Included in the Kern portfolio were the core of Tenneco's present sodium leases in Sweetwater County, WY. This lease base has been ex¬panded and now consists of 62 km2 (24 sq miles). Beneath this property lies more than 500 Mt (550 million st) of economic trona ore. Following the Kern acquisition, Tenneco continued exploration and feasibility studies concerning the trona leases. The effort was accelerated in 1976. Tenneco was attracted to trona because of the favorable lease position it held, the growth rate of the Wyoming industry during the 1960s and 1970s, and the prospects for a long-term, stable business enterprise. The reserve picture was certainly attractive to a company long accustomed to the never-ending struggle to replace oil and gas reserves. In 1978, Wyoming was a boom area that had experienced rapid growth for a number of years. Unemployment was very low and vacant housing nonexistent. The prospects for soda ash were somewhat different in the 1970s than now. But it was recognized even then that a new producer would have a challenging task to compete in this business. Tenneco knew the capital burden required to build a grassroots facility during inflationary time, would have to be offset elsewhere Since labor and energy are the dominant direct costs in mining trona and producing soda ash these factors have always received a great deal of attention. Contracting and permits Environmental monitoring on the site began in late 1977. With the already mentioned considerations in mind, engineering began by mid-1978. Brown & Root Inc. was selected as the general contractor for the project. S. A. Scott & Co. was the engineering subcontractor for the mine shafts, hoists, ventilation system, and miscellaneous mine facilities. Frontier-Kemper was awarded the contract for sinking the two mine shafts. Acquisition of numerous federal, state, and local permits occupied all of 1978 and 1979. The Wyoming Industrial Siting Permit, which addresses socioeconomic issues, drew the most public interest. Siting issues were all satisfactorily resolved by negotiating reasonable stipulations with various local governmental units, school districts, and the like. Site location The Green River project location is not truly remote. It is located within 5 km (3 miles) of Interstate 80 and only about 32 km (20 miles) west of the city of Green River. Nevertheless, a substantial investment had to be made in communication and utility links to the site. These included: • A 14-km (8.5-mile) rail spur connecting with the Union Pacific Railroad at Bryan, WY. This spur has four bridge structures including one crossing Interstate 80. Most soda ash is shipped by rail, and coal is received over this line as well. • A paved 5-km (3-mile) roadway connecting to Interstate 80. • A powerline extension of about 27 km (16.5 miles), along with two new substations. • A 24-km (15-mile) waterline connecting the plant to a pump station on the Green River. The site is located on gently sloping terrain at an elevation of about 2.1 km (6800 ft). Ground conditions are good for construction. Weathered bedrock lies near the surface in most places. Geology The general geology of the Green River Basin has been well described previously. Tenneco's ore is in several superimposed evaporate beds. Copper concentrates are widely used in smelting operations worldwide and typically consist of chalcopyrite ( CuFeS2) as the primary mineral, with chalcocite ( Cu2S) and bornite ( Cu5FeS4) as secondary copper-bearing minerals. However, these concentrates often contain hazardous impurities, such as the fluorine ion, which can result in various complications during the smelting process. These issues include equipment corrosion, gas treatment requirements, environmental hazards, and strained community relations. Furthermore, high fluorine content in copper concentrates can lead to penalties and limitations during sales. To address these challenges, this comprehensive review assesses current techniques for removing fluorine from copper concentrate. Drawing upon recent research and the findings in the field, the review analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of existing fluorine removal methods and identifies critical issues requiring attention in the future. This review provides valuable insights into the current state of fluorine removal from copper concentrates and serves as a practical guide for researchers and industry professionals in this field.

"INTRODUCTION The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is located approximately 26 miles southeast of Carlsbad, New Mexico and is the nation’s first underground geologic repository for transuranic (TRU) and TRU-mixed waste (see Figure 1). The WIPP facility was opened for operation in 1999 when the first TRU waste shipment arrived at the WIPP facility for disposal.WIPP facility does not employ typical production aspects of a conventional mine. Instead, the mining focus is on the quality of the excavation to ensure safe disposal of TRU and TRU-mixed waste (Walls, 1991). GEOLOGY WIPP underground repository is mined within a 2,000 feet-thick bedded-halite formation (Salado Formation) (see Figure 2). The WIPP underground repository is located approximately 2,150 feet beneath the surface near the center of the Salado Formation. Geologic criterion and site-selection factors evaluated for the selection of the repository included topography, depth, thickness, lateral extent, lithology, stratigraphy, structure, erosion, dissolution, subsidence, surface water, aquifers, hydrologic transport, climatic fluctuations, manmade penetrations (U.S. Department of Energy, 1980).FACILITY DESIGN Profit did not play a major role in the WIPP’s conception like in a conventional mine. This was due to the extensive amount of additional regulations and safety controls that had to be built into the WIPP facility. Since it is nuclear and hazardous waste disposal facility, it must meet certain federal and state requirements for TRU-mixed waste. One of the major regulatory drivers for the WIPP facility is defined in the WIPP Land Withdrawal Act (LWA). One of the requirements in the WIPP LWA requires the DOE to submit documentation of continued compliance with Title 40 CFR Part 191, Subparts B, and C. These standards are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The DOE must submit documentation of continued compliance (recertification) with these regulations every five years. In addition to the LWA, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) is another major regulatory driver for the WIPP facility. Since the WIPP facility is categorized as a “Miscellaneous Unit” under 40 CFR, it must meet extensive environmental performance standards. These standards are defined in the WIPP Hazardous Waste Facility Permit (HWFP). The HWFP defines the terms and conditions that the Secretary of the New Mexico Environment Department has determined necessary to protect human health and the environment (U.S. Department of Energy and Nuclear Waste Partnership LLC, 2015)."
