For the first time in its history, the George A. Fox Conference let its focus venture away from the friendly confines of the East Coast of the United States to spend part of the one-day conference looking at projects from around the globe. With a record-setting attendance of 377 people, the conference, titled ?Tunneling: An international perspective,? opened with a keynote speech from special guest In-Mo Lee, professor, Korea University in Seoul, South Korea. He is also the president of the ITA-AITES. In a sweeping presentation, Lee walked the packed audience through some of the most fascinating and challenging projects in his home country. Among the projects he spoke about were Korea?s longest railway tunnel, the Solahn Tunnel and the Inje Tunnel, a freeway tunnel that is 11.94 km (7.4 miles) long.

Risk ranking of projects is one of the importance parts of the complicated risk management procedure. Recognizing the riskiest criteria enable the managers to plan for risk reduction. The first stage for meeting this aim is defining the risky parameters and then working to establish order between them. There are variety methods for risk ranking. The ELECTRE method is one of the best among the multi criteria decision making methods. In this paper with implementing the fuzzy ELECTRE, The risky criteria in the Tehran Subway project are being ranked. The result of this research presents damage and accident of machineries as well as the lack of labor and equipment safety is located in the first order. Collapse factors and local prices are in second rank. Also wrong design, pollution, urban facilities damageable are in third to fifth respectively. Delay and ? are located in the last positions.

"The Ninetyeast Ridge (NER) extends roughly N-S as a topographic feature for 5000 km, from 31° south to 10° north (Fig. 1) where it becomes buried beneath the Bengal Fan at its northern end. These two geographic characteristics make the NER an ideal natural laboratory for determining the influence of latitude and terrestrial input to ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) crust formation and composition. In addition to study of geographic controls on crust composition, the NER is the largest feature in the Indian Ocean that may host crusts of economic interest.Crusts were collected from 9 of 33 dredge sites from 1.4° north to 26° south latitudes during the 2007 R.V. Roger Revelle Knox06 cruise. Nineteen samples were analyzed for 69 elements each. Nine bulk crusts and 10 layers from four crusts were analyzed. Three of the crusts sub-sampled for layers did not have the bulk crust analyzed and the weighted means for those layers were calculated to obtain bulk compositions. One sample was left out of the statistical analyses because it is phosphatized and chemically quite different from the other samples (Table 1).In order to determine changes in composition with latitude, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients were calculated for the chemical dataset and latitude of dredge sites, as well as water depth. At the 95-99% confidence level, the following elements increase in crusts moving north along the NER: Mg, Ti, S, Cd, Ni, Tl, Mn, Ba, Co, Cu, In, Li, and Zn; and the following elements decrease northward: Fe, Fe/Mn, P, As, Sc, the rare earth elements plus yttrium (REY), Bi, Ge, and Pb. These correlations indicate that the iron oxyhydroxide component and its associated elements are more prevalent to the south, and the manganese-oxide phase and associated elements increase toward the north end of the NER. This change occurs between dredges D20 and D14 (Fig. 1), with crusts from D20 and south having Fe/Mn !1.0 and those north of D20 ""1.2, with the exception of the phosphatized crust. Crust composition also changes with water depth: Th, Ge, Pb, and the middle rare earth elements (REEs) increase with increasing water depth. Thorium commonly increases in deeper water crusts, which explains the higher Th concentrations in Atlantic and Indian ocean crusts in general compared with Pacific crusts (Fig. 2 and Hein et al., 2012), including the samples analyzed here with a mean water depth of 3584 m. However, water depth does not explain the latitudinal changes because the mean water depths of samples along the northern and southern segments of the NER are roughly comparable. Surprisingly, Si and Al, representing the aluminosilicate/detrital phase, do not correlate with latitude; that is as the ridge approaches and is buried by the Bengal Fan the Si and Al contents do not increase. However, overall, Si and Al have higher concentrations in NER crusts than in central Pacific crusts. Ba can be used as a proxy for primary productivity and statistically does increase to the north along the ridge in the direction of the equatorial zone of high biological productivity. Correlations of Mg, Li, and Zn with latitude may also reflect increased primary productivity at lower latitudes."

Peng The highlights of this paper are : • The shield supports with lemniscate links will exert a tangential force on the roof strata, causing unnecessary and harmful roof movements, thus damaging the roof structure. The principal source of the tangential force is the horizontal movement of the point O, the pivotal joint between the canopy and the caving shield. When the support height is changed during setting, the point O will move along a curve upward and rearward toward the gob. As a result, it produces a vertical movement, causing the roof to move up a distance of ?d, and a horizontal movement toward the gob, creating vertical fractures in the roof. • The major purpose for employing the lemniscate-link system is to protect the hydraulic legs against the action of the bending moments induced by the tangential force that causes deformation or destruction of the legs. • Based on these two points, the author suggested that, in order to eliminate the harmful effects of the lemniscate-link system and strengthen its advantageous features, a shield support with a new design of that mechanism has been developed. With the new design, the conventional rigid lemniscate links are replaced by hydraulic rams. When the pressure inside the rams reaches a certain level, the ram will yield.

The Yung-Chung-Tunnel in Taiwan, constructed for the Taiwan-East Railway Bureau, collapsed during construction when a water bearing, fractured marble zone was intersected. The inflow was approximately 4,000 liters/second. In spite of 30 relief holes the total inflow into the tunnel remained constant. The pre-excavation grouting through the re-aligned tunnel had to be conducted under extreme flow-conditions. A hot bitumen grouting program was selected for technical and economical reasons out of 13 international proposals. The technical challenges were: grouting under severe flow conditions high formation water pressures to be injected with hot bitumen at high temperatures and pressures The hot bitumen grouting program resulted in a dramatic reduction in the hydraulic conductivity and stabilization of the formation and facilitated a problem-free excavation.

The International Seabed Authority and a number of countries have or are in the process of developing environmental impact assessment guidelines and legislation for seafloor mineral development. The formal decision to grant a project an environmental permit is based on an environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA), culminating in an environmental impact statement (EIS). The EIS needs to be supported by sufficient data upon which an assessment of impacts can be made and mitigation measures developed. Given the remote locations of many seafloor prospects, collection of sufficient environmental data to inform an EIS is often a difficult, expensive and lengthy process.

Introduction In preparing this paper considerable time was spent attempting to find some upbeat data about the mining industry, so those of us in the field could feel somewhat better about future prospects. Much to my regret, I failed to uncover substantial evidence that our near-term or, for that matter, our long-term opportunities appear all that bright in North America. That is certainly not the kind of assessment anyone likes to hear or accept as even a possibility. Those remarks may, on the surface, appear far too pessimistic. This industry will experience a recovery and most likely will see conditions begin to improve later this year or early next. The kind and degree of recovery, however, will more than likely differ from those experienced in the past. Fundamental Changes Clearly, the fundamentals on a world scale of our business have undergone important changes. In recognizing these fundamental changes, mining authorities believe productivity advances are needed to change the direction mining has taken in recent years. The really tough question is whether increases in productivity will be enough to change the course of events that has dominated the mining sector for the past decade. Before one can provide an honest answer, an appraisal of what has and is happening now is necessary. Here are some changes and events that have taken place that effect domestic mining and will probably continue: • Mineral-rich lesser developed countries (LDCs) in Africa, South America, and Asia-Pacific have reached a point where they have developed the needed mining infrastructure to not only produce at a high rate, but in many instances, at a lower cost than fully developed countries. Just as importantly, these countries, even if they do not enjoy lower costs, will produce for world export with government subsidies because min¬ing products are key in obtaining badly needed foreign exchange. • These producing countries also have the distance advantage of lower labor, environmental, and other important regulatory costs. If that were not enough, these same countries have minerals with considerably higher grade ore and, in some cases, much lower cost accessibility. • Exporting North American commodities is impaired by a dollar that continues to strengthen against other important currencies around the world. There are other impediments to overcome, but these represent some of the realities our industry faces. Can those obstacles be overcome through improving productivity? In the past, this industry has offset the impact of these events to a sizeable degree through innovations of mining techniques, equipment and processes, and by increasing the size of its individual operations to reduce costs. Will further enhancements along these lines be enough to alter this changing balance in the future? While there is no answer, it is apparent that if we do not mount a full-scale assault in some key areas, our prospects will not be encouraging. Productivity improvements throughout the entire chain of the mining industry most certainly rates as a high priority. Every link in that chain from mine planning, equipment selections, and transportation considerations needs to be examined and reexamined to assure the lowest effective cost is developed. Quality, while oftentimes costing a little more initially, is still the most cost effective purchasing decision to make. Regulations Another area of concern is regulations, be they environmental or those that dictate what must or must not be done in running our business. They are gone now. Gone like that long ago generation that gave them birth. The Homestake Mine, nestled in the northern Black Hills, closed in 2001 after 125 years, the longest run of any major American gold mine. The Homestake Mining Co., which guided its destiny for those many years, is gone too. It merged with Barrick Gold. The Hearst family, which guided the early destiny of both, has long since gone beyond its mining heritage and into the national and even international spotlight. The mine and the company passed from the scene with as little fanfare as heralded their birth, amid the Black Hills gold rush of the 1870s. They both grew into American mining legends, as did the town they sired and nurtured, Lead. In a real sense, the mine and the company symbolized one of the last links to a vanished world and a mining era.

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL)1 of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in collaboration with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Technical Support Center has devised a prototype hand-held instrument which can provide a direct assessment of the potential explosibility of a coal and rock dust mixture. Current Federal regulations require that rock dust be applied in all underground areas of a coal mine to mitigate the propagation of a coal dust explosion. To determine compliance with the Federal regulation, mine inspectors collect dust samples from sections of underground coal mines for an MSHA laboratory analysis of incombustible content. However, the laboratory analysis may not be completed for more than a week or two, during which time the mine area from which samples are taken may be inadequately protected. The operation of the Coal Dust Explosibility Meter (CDEM) is based on the difference in optical reflectance between light rock dust and dark coal dust. For a given coal volatility, the optical reflectance of such mixtures is relatively constant at the limit of explosibility, independent of the coal dust particle size. The CDEM is not intended to replace the current MSHA laboratory analysis of coal mine dust samples for incombustible content, but to serve as a supplemental device for enhancing mine safety through improved rock dusting practices.

Unlike the first predicted deep-sea mining (DSM) boom 35 years, the public response to the re-emergent possibility of DSM is this time round is not entirely optimistic, with serious economic, social, and environmental concerns being voiced. In the intervening years, the troubling notion of the ‘resource curse’ has been popularized, whereby the economies of developing nations rich in natural resources (agriculture, minerals, and fuels), paradoxically appear to fare more poorly than their brethren who have fewer such resources. There have been a variety of explanations and counter-arguments regarding why the resource curse occurs, including how it can be ‘escaped’, and even some disagreement on whether it in fact does occur. Nevertheless, many commentators appear to agree that that the quality of governance is strongly implicated in the socioeconomic success, or failure, of these resource-dependent nations, and could indeed be the deciding factor. Unlike nations with diversified economies, the majority of the income from natural resource economies, in the form of royalties and rents, flows through national government; hence, good governance and fiscal management is of particular concern.

Soil next to an abandoned smelter near Socorro, New Mexico, has the highest Pb concentration in the clay-size fraction, although this fraction accounted for only 1 to 3 wt. % of the soil. The depth of contamination was determined in areas relatively undisturbed since the smelter was abandoned about 98 years ago. Lead concentration drops to background levels below a depth of 3 inches. A mineralogical examination of the fine-size fraction of Pb-contaminated soils revealed an absence of crystalline Pb compounds. We conclude that Pb is present either as amorphous phases or adsorbed on the surfaces of soil particles. Yet, because of the alkalinity of the soil, the movement of Pb-bearing particles controls Pb mobility, not chemical transport in solution. Plant material from the site contained elevated Pb levels that increased as the amount of Pb in the soil increased. Of the types of material tested, rabbit bush showed the greatest increase of Pb levels. Lead levels were highest in rabbit bush roots, whereas levels in creosote were highest in foliage. Levels in cactus varied. The amount of Pb due to dust incorporated in plant tissue is almost negligible compared to the amount absorbed through the plant vascular system.

Machine-related injuries are one of the major safety concerns in underground coal mines. Severe injuries and fatalities occur when a miner is struck, crushed, or pinned by mining equipment such as a continuous mining machine (CMM), shuttle car, or a scoop. Proximity detection systems (PDSs) have been applied in mining to reduce these types of injuries and fatalities. All of the PDSs that are currently approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for use in underground coal mines are magnetic-field based and could be affected by metallic objects such as trailing cables. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigated the influence of trailing cables on the performance of PDSs. In particular, the magnetic field coupled from proximity system generators to a de-energized trailing cable was characterized. The results show that significant energy can be coupled from the proximity system generators to a trailing cable when there is a closed loop in the cable. The effect on PDS performance from the magnetic field radiated around an energized trailing cable was also quantified for different current amplitudes in the cable. It is shown that the magnetic field caused by the electric current in the trailing cable mainly consists of a 60-Hz signal and its harmonics which causes little interference to the PDS. The results presented in this paper can help PDS manufacturers to design better systems that are more immune to these effects.

The 500-kt/a (550,000-stpy) refinery in Burnside, LA, owned by Almatis Inc. produced specialty alumina used in the abrasives, ceramics, chemical and refractory industries. The 1.2-Mt/a (1.32 million-stpy) refinery in Gramercy, LA, owned by Noranda Alumina LLC produced alumina mostly for use in aluminum smelters but also produced specialty alumina. An upgrade project at the Gramercy refinery to convert 200 kt/a (220,000 stpy) of capacity to produce more profitable specialty alumina was completed in the first half of 2018, and another project to increase capacity was started but a completion schedule was not available. The amount of new capacity was not disclosed, but it would be used to produce nonmetallurgical grade alumina. The 2.3-Mt/a (2.5 million-stpy) refinery in Point Comfort, TX, which was temporarily shut down in March 2016, remained closed throughout the year."

Introduction Many old underground mines have been developed extensively into reserves requiring large numbers of workers to maintain and rehabilitate lengthy track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, large numbers of fans are required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. Problems that beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability are presented. Brief history The Vesta No. 5 mine was opened in 1908. Drift development began near the Monongahela River, which was the primary avenue for shipping metallurgical coal to coke ovens in Pittsburgh. Over the ensuing 75 years, the main haulage entries were developed a distance of 16.1 km (10 miles) to the present mining area. Track haulage was used to transport coal from working sections to the river loading facility. As haulage distance and areas of high water influx increased, management decided, in 1973, to construct an underground conveyor belt system. The project spanned 36 months and culminated in a system of 22 flights, ranging from 205.7 to 1767.8 m (675 to 5800 ft) long. Six intake and eight return entries were developed as the mains were advanced. These entries provided adequate ventilating capacity over the years, but as extensive gob areas progressed and roof conditions deteriorated, the entries became inaccessible and more resistant to airflow. By 1981, five fans were being used to circulate 943.9 m3/s (555.5 cfm) of air through the mine. An average of 6440 t (7100 st) were produced from 20.8 continuous miner unit shifts and 2.7 longwall unit shifts each day in 1981. The ratio of support to production personnel was 1.94. To maintain the outby 16.1 km (10 miles) of haulage, 110 personnel were used. The average cost per ton was $43.54 ($39.58 per st), resulting in excessive bottom-line losses. The mine possessed a rather promising reserve, mostly in lease, of good quality, medium-sulfur metallurgical coal, but it also had a number of formidable operating problems. Operating problems Contributing factors toward relatively low productivity and high costs were the conditions of the track haulage, conveyor, and ventilation systems. Productivity was affected greatly by downtime associated with the conveyor system, which lacked adequate access for making splices or other repairs. Mr. Garrett brings up several interesting points with respect to the proposed API specification for "nontreated bentonite." However, although not explicitly stated, these specifications are being written based strictly on bentonites from the Wyoming/South Dakota area. Other sodium bentonites may be suitable for use as drill mud but will be unacceptable since the specifications are designed for Wyoming bentonites. Regardless of the API's intent that its specifications are intended only as guidelines, they are generally adhered to on an international basis and, for practical purposes, might as well be chiseled in stone. Estes (1986) notes that the quality of bentonite available from Wyoming producers has steadily declined since the early 1960's. The plastic viscosity: yield point (PV:YP) ratio was included in the current API 13A specification primarily to prevent excessive polymer treatment of lower quality bentonites to make drill mud. However, with development of polymers designed to control YP, this specification cannot ensure that only high-quality bentonites are used for drill mud. Nor will the new specifications for untreated bentonites. Other sodium bentonites are available. Bentonite produced in southeast Oregon demonstrates superior performance characteristics without addition of polymer or other chemicals. However, the exceptionally high purity of these deposits leads to a relatively high YP:PV ratio since the naturally high YP probably results from the higher purity and smaller particle size of this bentonite (Rath, 1986 and personal communication). These bentonites typically have a smectite component exceeding 90% (Rath, 1985), compared with 70% to 75% smectite for typical Wyoming bentonites, as determined by X¬ray diffraction and tests for colloid content. As evident from the accompanying table, the untreated Oregon bentonite has excellent rheological properties, though different from Wyoming bentonites due to the high purity. Additionally, this bentonite reacts well with polymers typically used in the oil industry, making it eminently suitable for use in a low-solids mud system. The extremely low grit content, less that 0.5% on a 75 mm (200-mesh) wet sieve, greatly exceeds the standards set for Wyoming bentonite. Optimum rheological properties are obtained at a higher moisture content than Wyoming bentonites. At 10% moisture, API 13A maximum, the clay is overdried, again reflecting the high smectite content. The unutilized iron ore fines (IOF, − 10 mm, 45% to < 60% Fe(T)) left at various mine sites during blasting and processing are rich in goethetic-hematite associated with high clay and considered a potential iron ore resource. The variation of loss on ignition (LOI) from mines to mines is based on the goethite and clay mineral content. The clay containing below 45 μm is mostly brittle, causing beneficiation problems. The IOF has an LOI of 7.83%, with high silica (5.52%) and alumina (4.57%), and 57.17% of Fe(T) subjected to both conventional deep beneficiation (CDB) and magnetization roasting using high-ash non-coking coal to adopt the suitable upgradation process. The CDB and magnetization roasting concentrate has 62.61% and 67.58% Fe(T) with 64.69% and 85.19% yield, respectively. However, the presence of 6.40% LOI in CDB makes the ore challenging for pelletization. Characterization like X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscope(SEM), and chemical analysis was used to assess the concentrate quality and potential industrial application.

INTRODUCTION Bratislava is located at the intersection of important traffic routes, including motor-ways, roads, railways, air traffic, trading, and inland waterway with an important harbour. The construction of the D2 Motorway Bratislava, Lamacska cesta Stare grunty was the last missing section of D2 Motorway and its completion linked the Czech Republic through Bratislava to the Hungarian Republic. Traffic was obliged until its completion to use the Lamacska Road and Mlynska Dolina, which were the most heavily trafficked roads in the city. The section of D2 Motorway to be completed in 2006 was 3,300m in length, of which the SITINA Tunnel was approximately half the length. After putting into operation the transit traffic(motorway) and urban traffic was separated. Transit traffic by passing the town was eased. The junctions D2 with Lamacska Road (Harmincova) and Mlynska Dolina also allowed better use of the motorway for the urban traffic The tunnel construction was specified by the features with the highly weathered and thermally altered granitic rock formation with the overburden of Quaternary sediment of 2?4 m thick, very thin overburden, severely controlled deformation limit and environmental protection. The tunnel had to be excavated beneath and nearby the academic complex area and the zoo, where sensitive facilities exist and animals live in. The tunnel consisted of two tunnels (Tunnel A and B) with the length of 1,415 and 1,440 m, respectively. The overburden thickness was in the range from 10?30 m. The standard cross-section and the one with invert arch were 79.5?81.5 m2 and 92.1?93.3 m2. The excavation took 21 months from September 2003 to May 2005. The construction was based on the concept of NATM. The SITINA Tunnel was the third application of NATM in Slovakia, following the BRANKISKO Tunnel (commenced in July 2003) as the first and the HORELICA Tunnel (in October 2004) as the second NATM practice. To protect the surrounding structures and citizens from tunneling operations, seismic monitoring was performed in association with blasting. The allowable limit of blasting vibration was fixed to be under the particle velocity of 15 mm/sec. The tunnel excavation cleared this limit as expected before construction. In driving through the difficult geological situation the excavation work hit 49 faults, and some of them occasionally caused serious face instability. In principle, the rock formation has been affected by the high hydrothermal effect and the resultant clay filing along faults and joints. The auxiliary reinforcement with the 4?8 m long pipe roofing was needed to protect the vicinity of mining face area. This operation extraordinarily required additional works and time which had not been expected before construction.

Whether the mining engineer is concerned with stress problems in a mine at depth, the development of a new drill bit, or the efficiency of a comminution process, the mechanical properties of the rock with which he must work are of the utmost importance. One of the most popular topics in rock mechanics circles today is ?Is it possible to utilize directly parameters determined from laboratory tests on rock specimens in the analysis of mining engineering problems?? It is the author&apos;s opinion that laboratory and .field investigations have not yet reached the stage of development where this question can be answered with any degree of certainty. At present, great difficulties are involved in applying the results of laboratory tests to a mining engineering problem. However, this is due in part to the lack of detailed measurements of stress and deformation in the field and in part to the lack of development of satisfactory structural theories to correlate laboratory and field measurements. Furthermore, if mechanical properties measured in the laboratory are to be directly applied to the analysis of mining engineering problems, the critical mechanical properties must be identified, reliable test procedures must be developed and extensive test programs must be carried out.

This research investigates roof deformation and failure characteristics, as well as mechanical interaction between the panels of the roof strata above two adjacent working faces in a steeply inclined coal seam. Physical modeling with photogrammetry measurement method has been employed in this investigation. The movement of roof strata and section pillar, as well as the stratum morphological characteristics, was quantitatively analyzed. Results show that the roof movement direction above the two panels has zoning characteristics, especially in the lower panel. Roof migration in the lower panel of the working face is larger than that in the upper panel. The roof to floor closure perpendicular to the seam direction is larger than the sliding along the seam. The maximum roof concave and convex bending occurred at the middle and upper parts of both panels; the roof bending in the upper panel mining area indicates a larger mining disturbance induced by lower panel mining. The void ratio contour of the lower panel is an asymmetrically arched shape, which is different from that of the upper panel area. The higher roof strata above the upper panel exhibit separation and breaking, whereas the lower roof exhibits compression due to mining in lower panel. The section pillar is compressed and slides slightly, which aggravates the mechanical interaction between the panels and increases the caving height of the roof over the lower panel and the periodic weighting intensity
