Over the last fifty years, the treatment of enargite concentrates has not received much attention primarily because of the availability of other clean concentrates suitable for processing with existing smelting and/or leaching technologies. As traditional copper ores have become scarcer, copper-arsenic ore deposits have garnered more interest. Arsenic release is a significant concern during the treatment of enargite by pyro or hydrometallurgical methods. Enargite is also very refractive in standard leaching procedures. Thus, economical treatment options for enargite concentrates are needed. Preliminary experiments have shown that the acid-bake leach process could be adapted and used for the treatment of enargite concentrates. In this study, low-temperature (100-400 ºC) sulfuric acid baking of an enargite concentrate followed by water-leaching has been evaluated. The results indicate the thermal transformation of enargite to copper sulfate during sulfuric acid baking, with most of the arsenic being released from the concentrate into the gas phase for baking at 400 ºC. The condition for maximum copper extraction (~100%) from the concentrate was found to be 400 ºC, sulfuric acid amount of 0.5 mL/g of concentrate, and 2 h baking time. Part of the arsenic was captured in the form of arsenopyrite (FeAsS). XRD analysis proved the presence of some arsenic in the form of claudetite (As2O3) in the baked concentrate. Acid baking of pure enargite behaved in similar fashion.

Waste materials caused by mining activities are an important environmental problem. Paste technology is a good alternative for waste management because it has many benefits in the aspects of environment, cost and safety. Disposal of process wastes in paste form is an attractive option for waste management, as it eliminates or reduces the risks associated with conventional methods. Due to the geotechnical characteristics of the paste, it is very similar to soil materials. So determining the geotechnical properties of the paste material is essential to durability of the paste. The some important geotechnical properties are compressive strength, porosity, shear strength, hydraulic conductivity, water content, consolidation, etc. In this study, the important parameters and the relation between them were investigated and obtained some results which will affect for optimum design of waste management.

The 2,250-MW, coal-fired Navajo Generating Station located in Page, AZ draws water from Lake Powell using submersible pumps installed in five inclined shafts. Drought threatens to lower the reservoir to below the existing intakes. A system of new steel-lined intake shafts located on the same site was required for uninterrupted plant operation. The small size of the site, and the need to keep the existing system in operation, required detailed designs and placed significant limitations on construction equipment and activities. The Navajo Sandstone that forms the near vertical shoreline of the reservoir is 98 percent very fine grained quartz, highly abrasive and contains highly fractured intervals that presented numerous challenges to drilling the new 152-m (500-ft) deep, 109-cm (43-in.) diameter intake shafts inclined 23° to 26° from vertical. Spatial constraints, submersible pump design and operational criteria required that each shaft have a unique inclination and orientation and hit a small breakout target located 76 m (250 ft) under water. Sophisticated drilling equipment and techniques as well as state of the practice downhole survey technology and methods were used to make adjustments and maintain drilling accuracy with less than 1 percent deviation. Environmental requirements mandated water as the drilling fluid and grout was not allowed in to the lake under any circumstances. The shafts were videotaped and the breakout locations were examined using an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to verify shaft locations and rock conditions, and to guide placement of pneumatic packers to ensure grout did not transmit to the lake during the steel liner installation. In anticipation of the invasion of quagga mussels, the shaft design included an allowance for a chemical dosing system and a copper-rich alloy at the exposed portions of the steel liner.

In February 2001, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) commissioned its first full-scale ultra fine grinding (UFG) plant to supplement existing roaster concentrate treatment capacity. This process involves the fine grinding of refractory pyritic concentrate to 10µm, followed by direct cyanide leaching for the recovery of gold. By this means gold is economically extracted from the concentrate without the need to first oxidise the host pyrite. This paper details the history of the project from initial laboratory testwork comparing possible treatment options, to current performance of the 12 tph plant. This includes the cost comparison of the major treatment options, the laboratory and pilot scale UFG performance, the UFG mill selection, cyanide leaching of UFG product, commissioning and plant performance to date.

I have been asked by the Society of Mining Engineers to present a paper on Inco Limited's Indonesian nickel project as a case study in the financing of large overseas mining projects. I welcome this opportunity It is a story worth telling not only because the project itself represents a significant human achievement but also because there are certain important lessons that can be derived from our experience in financing the project. The paper will be divided into four sections: (i) a brief history of the project, (ii) a critical appraisal of the project's financing plan in terms of the goals that we sought to achieve, (iii) some comments on certain factors underlying the relative success of the financing plan, and (iv) the contributions that the engineering staffs must make to a successful financing plan. The paper will not present a technical assessment of the project since Inco Limited has been asked to submit a series of papers on this subject at the International Laterite Symposium as part of the 108th Annual Meeting of the AIME in February 1979.

Although lifetime estimates for sulfate reduction based on total substrate carbon typically range from 20 to 30 years, field and laboratory experiments showed that rates of sulfate reduction decreased over time as readily available organic material was consumed. When the rate of acid input exceeded the rate of sulfate reduction, alkalinity was removed from the substrate, pH decreased and metals increased. Output pH increased from 4 to over 6 after the system was shut down for several weeks and the rate of acid input was reduced. Successful long term treatment requires a design based on the input pH and the long-term organic decomposition rate.

Exploration activity in metallic minerals continued to decline in Montana in 1992 as companies either reduced budgets or left the state. The number of active projects dropped another 50% from 1991. Expenditures were 3% to 6% of 1989's 28.6 million. Many of the major mining companies closed offices in Montana. Although depressed commodity prices have hurried the exodus, continuous changes in environmental regulations, as well as the Mining Law of 1872, without regard to economic effect have had the most serious impact. Many companies indicate that Third World countries present a more stable business environment than the United States. Grassroots projects are nearly non-existent, while late-stage programs continue cautiously. Exploration activity continued at the following projects: Garnet, Pegasus Gold; Southern Cross, Asarco; Elkhorn, Goldfields; 7-Up-Pete, Phelps Dodge and Canyon Resources; Miller Mountain, Pegasus Gold; Sheep Creek, Cominco American Resources; Checkerboard, Kennecott and BHP Utah International; Emigrant Creek, Pegasus Gold; and Crevise, American Copper and Nickel. All mineral activity, whether on private, state or federal land, is regulated by the Montana Department of State Lands under three classes of permits - Small Miner Exclusion Statements (SMES), Exploration Licenses and Operating Permits. A total of 230 Exploration Licenses are active in the state with 26 of those being new. However, there are only 433 projects current in Montana, with many of those in the reclaiming stage. The majority of exploration projects consist of individuals expending time rather than money on properties. The number of mines functioning under operating plans declined by one when W.R. Grace closed its Zonolite operation.

It is known from soluble salt flotation practice that the K, Mg double salts of kainite (KClMgSO43H2O), and carnallite (KClMgCl26H2O) are difficult to float and must be converted to other salts such as schoenite (K2SO4MgSO46H2O) and sylvite (KCl) in order to recover potash values. The flotation characteristics of these double salts have now been confirmed in some detail by carefully controlled laboratory experiments with both cationic and anionic collectors. The experimental results are discussed in view of recent experimental findings regarding the flotation characteristics of simple salts, in which the flotation response was shown to be determined by the interfacial water structure and whether the salt could be considered to be a water structure maker or a water structure breaker. The same approach can be use to explain the flotation response of the potassium double salts ; schoenite, kainite, and carnallite. In addition, the sign of the surface charge of schoenite (K2SO4MgSO46H2O), was determined as a function of pH from nonequilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements. Schoenite appears to exhibit three charge reversals (CR) which can be explained based on surface hydrolysis reactions. The flotation behavior of schoenite is further considered based on solution chemistry calculations, electrophoretic mobility measurements, and microflotation results.

Not since 1917 has a foreign company developed a standalone, grass roots gold mine in Russia. With. Russia's political changes of the late 1980s, development of mineral prospects once again beckons foreign investors. In 1990, Cyprus Amax began aggressively searching for such an opportunity. Early in 1997, production will commence at the Kubaka gold project located in the Russian Far East, near the Arctic Circle. The Kubaka project is a 1,750-tonne per day open-pit operation that will produce more than 300,000 ounces of gold per year. This paper discusses the challenges of locating such a prospect, doing business in Russia, developing supply lines, identifying work force capabilities, gaining government approvals, securing financing, arranging for gold sales and ultimately building a facility in this arctic region.

The ventilation survey was conducted in an underground longwall trona mine. The mine is relatively shallow and categorized as a gassy mine. The ventilation system consists of nine shafts (three intakes and six exhausts). Three surface based axial fans ventilate the mine configured in a blowing arrangement. Following the ventilation survey airflow quantity, frictional pressure losses and air psychrometric characteristics have been quantified. An accurate resistance survey has been conducted to calculate the pressure drop with regard to moving cages and skips in the shafts. This paper discusses the benefits of utilizing high accuracy digital pressure transducers and psychrometers in a ?leapfrogging? survey to gather data needed to build the computer ventilation model. Two underground booster fans with VFD are currently idle but available at the mine. The ventilation model has been used to determine the optimal booster fan locations to decrease the overall operating cost by reducing the load carried by the main fans. A leakage study has been conducted to evaluate the effects on the system of additional pressure from a booster fan. The study finally prepares a future ventilation model for the next fifteen years of mine operation and investigates the effect of proposed scenarios.

Industrial Minerals commodity profiles are continued from May's Annual Review issue. Diatomite G. Coombs, Manville Sales Corp. Growth in US diatomite production continued to lag in 1986. The US Bureau of Mines estimated that 580 kt (640,000 st) were produced last year. This is a 1%0 growth over 1985. The cumulative growth from the 1982 low point is 4.4%. Present production, though, is still only 90% of the high tonnage of 1979. The industry will see increased competitive activity with the start-ups of two new mines and production facilities in California and Oregon. US production has come primarily from Lompoc, CA, Bassalt, Clark Station, and Lovelock, NV, and Quincy, WA. New production, probably with capacities of 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) each, have started near Burney, CA, and Vale, OR. Eagle Picher's new, full-line filter aid and filler plant at Celatom, Vale, OR, was dedicated in August. The plant uses diatomite from the Celatom mining district in Juntura, OR. Grefco's new filter aid and filler plant near Burney, CA, was ready in July. It produced flux calcined products through a single kiln and can handle both bag and bulk shipments. The operations are in Shata County with the plant and mine at the same site. Manville Specialties Group is moving its Filtration and Minerals Division headquarters and research staffs to Lompoc, CA. The move is intended to strengthen response and performance by locating research, marketing, and production close together. Diatomite is processed in three methods: natural, calcined, and flux calcined. The natural is dried to remove water and is particle size classified. Calcined or straight calcined products have been sintered to modify particle size or permeability. Flux calcination, or flux sintering, has a stronger influence on permeability and also benefits color. The unique structure of diatomite is used in a range of particle sizes from fine paint fillers, to coarser filter aids, to granular aggregates. Dimension stone L. Meade, Geomapping Associates Ltd. 1986 was another good year for dimension stone production. The trend toward using marble, granite, limestone, sandstone, and slate has created an increasing demand. According to US Bureau of Mines 1986 estimates, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of dimension stone, with a value of $173 million, was produced by 200 companies. This is an increase from 1985, where 220 companies produced 1 Mt (1.12 million st) valued at $172 million. The increased production volume and decreased unit value is due to the competition from imports. The net import reliance in 1986 was 68% compared to 62% in 1985. The value of imports was $374 million in 1986 versus $295 million the year before. In an effort to maintain their market share, domestic finishers, particularly in the granite industry, continued to upgrade plants and machinery during 1986. In addition, offshore dollars have financed a number of fabricating facilities in North America that will finish imported rough stock. It is hoped that this increased domestic production capability will capitalize on a devalued US dollar. The trend has been for growth in stone usage and market. This trend is continuing with increased public awareness and desire for natural stone in buildings. The area of greatest market growth is expected to be in residential and interior decorative stone usage. Use of sophisticated, automated equipment has made the cost more affordable. Now lobbies, foyers, and specialty rooms are being clad in stone. Dolomite J. Welshimer, National Lime & Stone Co. About three-quarters of dolomite production is used as construction aggregates and 10% to 20% is sold or used as an industrial mineral. Total limestone and dolomite consumed for chemical and metallurgical purposes is about 136 Mt/a (150 million stpy). Sales of industrial dolomitic products were somewhat stronger in 1986 than levels recorded in the early 1980s. Some of the sales' strength, however, can be attributed to reductions in the number of active mining and processing operations. The industry will probably undergo further consolidation by the end of this decade. This will be due primarily to the continued softening in demand by the steel industry. Dolomitic limestone deposits being mined for raw materials for the steel, glass, and refractory in¬dustries are generally 54% calcium carbonate and 45% magnesium carbonate by weight. Impurities composed of silicon, aluminum, iron, sulfur, and phosphorous, represent less than 1%. The heaviest concentration of high purity, surface mineable dolomite in the US is in northwestern Ohio. Crushed and sized dolomitic limestone is a basic raw material for the iron and steel industry. The 20th Century saw the modern mining industry enriched by one outstanding method of extracting of mineral resources called Borehole Mining (BHM). Mean while, despite its successful track record in wide ranging locales, few specialists are yet aware of this technology. The intent of this article is to introduce borehole mining to a wider spectrum of drilling and mining professionals. The BHM method is based on in-situ water jet cutting of rock mass. On Fig. 1 the schematic of the method is presented. The borehole mining tool 1 is lowered into the borehole 2 and high pressure water 3 is pumped down. At the bottom part of the tool, one portion of that water comes out through the hydromonitor nozzle 4 in a shape of water jet 5 and cuts the material 6 creating slurry 7. The other portion of high pressure water then comes to the hydroelevator 8 (jet pump, eductor) which produces a vacuum. When the slurry reaches this vacuum zone, the eductor sucks the slurry and pumps it up to the surface, where rock parts are separated from water in a tank 9 or a pond and clarified water is pumped down again closing the re-circulating BHM water supply system. The borehole mining tool is suspended on a drill rig tower 10 which allows the tool to rotate and move vertically along the borehole axis. While extracting rock mass, underground caverns (stopes) 11 are created. If necessary, compressed air 12 can be injected to the raising slurry flow to create an airlift effect. Also, a secondary agent 13 (such as oil, foam, etc.) can be added to the stope through the gap between the tool and the casing. As seen from the illustration, BHM is the remote mining method of extracting of mineral resources through boreholes by high pressure water jets.

Predictive maintenance technologies including vibration analysis, tribology, infrared thermography, ultrasonic detection, and electrical measurements have been applied to large electric mining shovels. The predictive program was initiated on the P&H Model 2300 and 4100 electric shovels. The utilization of these technologies has shown the potential for improving electric mining shovel availability and minimizing maintenance costs. Predictive technologies provide the tools to assess machinery condition. Availability is enhanced by the condition based planning of component replacement. Maintenance costs are minimized by focusing resources through condition based prioritization.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers are conducting a cross-sectional survey of equipment noise and worker noise exposures in the mining industry. Surface and underground limestone is one commodity recently surveyed. The sound levels of mining and processing equipment were recorded to identify noise sources. Full-shift worker noise exposures were completed to determine the exposure of various occupations. This paper presents the results of the noise research conducted in both underground and surface limestone mines, detailing the equipment likely to cause worker overexposures, and the occupations experiencing overexposures. Implications for worker noise exposure reduction are also reported.

In September 1985 we published a questionnaire asking about the content of MINING ENGINEERING and about your interests. By Dec. 10, our cutoff date, we had 430 responses, representing about 1.5% of the 28,238 people who received the September issue of ME. In the data that follow the tabulation and percentages are based on the number of individuals who responded to the particular question. About ME Through responses to the questionnaire, we were hoping to learn more about you, your interests, and how the magazine could better serve you. Those of you who responded told us something positive - you look at or read the magazine. Of the 430 respondents, 428 or 99.5% indicated that they had read or looked through the July and/or August issues. Those of you who refer to the magazine once are 207 or 48.5%. Those of you who refer to the magazine two or three times are 193 or 45.2%. Those of you who refer to the magazine four or more times are 27 or 6.3%. How much time do you spend reading the magazine? The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) uses light-scattering dust monitors (nephelometers) in its research to develop dust controls to reduce respirable silica dust overexposures in miners. Recently, the model 1500-pDR, an active nephelometer, was introduced by Thermo Scientific. Testing was completed to ensure compatibility with the metal/nonmetal mine dust personal sampling unit (M/NMDPSU). Results of testing demonstrated that gravimetric concentrations measured from the 1500-pDR are comparable to the gravimetric concentrations measured using the M/NMDPSU, without need for correction, under commonly observed dust loading conditions.

The 56,000' (17 km) long San Vicente Aqueduct Pipeline tunnel is being constructed using precast concrete rings to act as preliminary ground support through two sections of the bored tunnel with lengths of 9,450' (2.9 km) and 33,700' (10.27 km).The six segment bolted trapezoidal ring was manufactured using a combination of steel fiber reinforced concrete and self compacting concrete in vertical moulds. This paper briefly describes the design and function of the segments, and reviews the development stages of the concrete mix, and the advantages and disadvantages of the adopted manufacturing method.

An environmental management system (EMS) is a key part of a company?s environmental stewardship. Procedures and practices to continually improve environmental performance can provide great benefits in operating the company. Managing site environmental quality data is a key component of this. An environmental data management system (EDMS) is an important element of the EMS for mining and other projects, providing project staff with the information that they need to make decisions that can have a significant impact on public health. Improvements in computers, data communications, and transfer formats have made it much easier to implement an integrated EDMS program for gathering, managing, selecting, and displaying data from the field and the lab. Software now lets users define sampling plans, create files for field data entry, and print Chains of Custody. Laptop and handheld computers facilitate field data entry and may provide automated communication back to the office. Most labs can now create usable electronic data deliverables. QC checks and limit comparisons can be largely automated. The result is organized data that can be efficiently used for reporting, graphing, and mapping, to better understand project issues.

Rhenish lignite will continue to play an indispensible role in the energy mix of the German Federal Republic for a long time to come. The use of lignite for electricity generation, upgrading and, if necessary, as a raw material is geared to the long term. The holistic management of opencast mines underpinned by approval law in the long term and a stronger focus on man, the environment and nature contribute to the acceptance of the mines by the local population. The same is true of state-of-the-art lignite uses: as regards their operational flexibility, lignite-fired power plants are ideal partners for the expansion of renewables. It is along these lines that RWE is continuing its power plant renewal programme as planned. With a view to that which will be conceivable the day after tomorrow, RWE is researching future technologies today in order to meet objectives such as security of supply, profitability and environmental compatibility to the same extent in the long term. Another important contribution to acceptance is public transparency and communications as means to support approval procedures and the implementation of measures in all areas related to lignite mining and utilization.

The numbers tell the story of this one. More than 50,000 people and 1,890 exhibitors took over the Las Vegas Convention Center Sept. 24-26 for the largest mining trade show in the world ? MINExpo. Inside the convention center, some of the largest machines used in mining were on display. Caterpillar, Liebherr, Komatsu and Hitachi displayed ultraclass offroad mining trucks and shovels. Atlas Copco and Schramm were among companies that rolled in mining drills and Bridgestone, Goodyear and Michelin were among the companies showing off the massive tires used by the trucks. Throughout the three halls and an outdoor display area, just about every kind of product, gadget or service used in the mining industry could be found on display somewhere.
