A short review is given of the effects of corrosion fatigue on the materials used in pressurized water-reactor vessels. Selected topics such as testing procedures, test data, and mechanisms in simulated environments are discussed. The main fact that emerges is that most of the data on the growth of fatigue cracks reside below the ASME X1 1980 High-R 'Wet' design-code lines, Le. they fall within that specification. Finally, some recent advances in the understanding of the corrosion-fatigue behaviour of such materials in pressurized water reactors are highlighted.

PAPER FOR PRESENTATION The Chairman then called upon Mr S. Selmer-Olsen to present his paper, 'Lectures on electro-smelting of ferro-alloys'. After Mr S. Selmer-Olsen had presented his paper, he answered questions arising from contributions from the floor. The Chairman then thanked Mr S. Selmer-Olsen for presenting his paper. Although the De Beers group has a long history of placer mining on land, the group only became actively involved in deep water marine diamond exploration and mining in1983 with the formation of De Beers Marine. Full-scale commercial mining commenced around 1991. Since then, the group marine mining capability has grown into a formidable fleet of 8 large deep water (>70 m) mining vessels, as well as other special purpose geo-survey platforms. Marine diamond production by the group is expected to be just short of 1 million carats in 2006. DeBeers operates across the entire value-chain spectrum from geology and geo-survey, through sampling to mining, and finally ore processing into high value concentrate. Supporting these operations involves significant service activities such as maintenance, security, logistics and environmental management. Specific challenges exist in terms of developing or acquiring appropriate technology for marine mining. These challenges have resulted in DeBeers operating extensive in-house R&D and projects departments, as well as drawing extensively from technology partners. An array of computational and test facilities are also available to support R&D and projects activities. Hydro transport in various guises is key to the current approaches to marine mining and ore processing. Use is made of airlift and centrifugal pumping for hydraulic hoisting of very coarse gravel, while splitters, launders, dewatering, elutriators, jet-pumps, centrifugal pumps, dense medium circuits, pipeline systems, and instrumentation for coarse abrasive particles are used extensively in the ore processing plant.

The utilization of centralized blasting systems is progressively becoming a feature of the South African mining industry, owing to increased pressure from the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) to ensure safer blasting conditions. The purpose of a centralized blasting system (CBS) is to ensure reduced blasting-related incidents and to improve the underground working environment for the mine?s employees. The brief from Samancor Western Chrome Mines (WCM) pertaining to this study was to explore?at a conceptual level?all variables pertaining to the implementation of the CBS. Studies have indicated that Sasol?s SafeBlast? was preferred due to low overall risks and user-friendliness. Empirical observations, however, indicated that attention should be given to the current shaft-clearing procedure and to the installation of additional transformers. This is required to co-ordinate the power supply from 2 level to 10 level with the required supply of the network slave station. A cost analysis indicated that an electronically initiated CBS will result in a R24 cost increase per panel, which relates to a mere 1% cost increase per panel. This cost, in addition to the R1.1 million capital cost, proved to be negligible in comparison to the possible direct and indirect costs incurred by the mine in the event of a blasting-related incident. It was found that Samancor should conduct further studies incorporating the necessary requirements to ensure a successful transition, while considering all stakeholders on the mine. This study proved that the transition to a CBS would ensure safe and efficient blasting at Samancor?s Mooinooi Mine.

"The model described is a design and economic planning tool for analyzing surface mineral deposits. Mineralization, topography, costs and significant geologic features are input to the model. The results are:(i) final pit limits yielding the maximum total profit,(ii) annual cut-off grades and plant sizing yielding the maximum present value, and(iii) annual maps of the pit and annual production statistics for the mine, concentrator and smelter.Additionally, summaries are printed of the block mining sequence and cash flow. A special feature is an option to include dump-leaching operations. Stockpiling of material can also be simulated by the model. The model is built around theories of dynamic cut-off grades and a pit design algorithm. The dynamic cut-off grades maximize present value by examination of all economic and physical constraints for the optimum combination. The pit design algorithm is a set of rules formulated to find the maximum value from a special graph. The graph is different from graphs of analytical geometry, being made up of points and arrows connecting some of the points. These graph elements describe the relationship between any point in the deposit and the material which must be mined to get at that point. The model was designed to bring together the interdependent theories of economics, pit design and production scheduling."

This paper simplifies and provides a strict mathematical proof for an equation developed by R. J. Woody for the c alculation of solute recoveries in countercurrent decantation. The equation offers a convenient method for the optimization of flowsheets involving a simple countercurrent-decantation circuit.

Leyman* The authors discuss in detail the effects of transport and storage at the steel plant on the reactivity of lime as measured by the DIN Reactivity Test. They attribute the deterioration in reactivity to the absorption of water vapour and carbon dioxide, but make no mention of the possible role of atmospheric sulphur dioxide in this respect. Notes on the composition of pre- European copper and copper-alloy artefacts from the Transvaal by H. M. Friede. Ph.D. (Visitor) Seven copper artefacts (five ingots and two ornaments) found at prehistoric sites in the Transvaal were submitted to analysis. All the artefacts showed a high copper content and a relatively Iow level of impurities. A little-known ingot type from the Limpopo Valley ('nail' ingot) is described, and its analysis is given. The analysis of two copper ornaments that come from sites dated to the 5th Century AD. and the 11th Century AD. showed the constancy of the composition of copper articles over long periods. The well-known 'Blaauwberg Ingot' was re-analysed, and the results showed that this ingot cannot be regarded as a true bronze. Analytical values for the composition of three brass artefacts from Bambandyanalo (Mapungubwe), Northern Transvaal, are given. Some aspects of pre-European bronze manufacture and brass smelting, and of early metal trade from the East Coast into the interior of South Africa, are discussed.

Alluvial diamond deposits covered with a thick overburden cannot be explored effectively and mined profitably with the available conventional techniques. A novel directional drilling technique has been developed and site trials have been conducted at the De Beers Namaqualand Mines situated at the western coast of South Africa. This paper describes the technique developed as well as the results of the site trials. The main task of the project is to develop a tool and a supporting system to achieve a remote exploration and ore extraction method for inaccessible alluvial diamond deposits. The project involves the acquisition of a system, commissioning on-site and evaluating the information obtained during assessment. The project consists of the design -of certain tools and instrumentation for the system, investigations and desktop studies as well as development of the system's logistics. The operating philosophy of the system is based on the keyhole surgery principle. In this study a pilot hole was drilled first, starting from the surface with an inclination to reach deeply seated diamondiferous gravel layers, followed by drilling into a more or less horizontal gravel layer for a certain length and finally pointing-upwards reaching ground surface at a predetermined exit point. The pilot drill bit was then replaced with a larger diameter reamer/mining tool and an HDPE tail pipe was attached behind the reamer. The drill string was retracted back to enlarge the guide hole and flush the excavated ore to the surface through the tail pipe. The material flow in between the sections of the system was' carefully measured to assess and record the gravel recovery rates. Several horizontal holes were drilled at preplanned drill paths to reach and follow the ore layer and the Ore extraction was achieved by means of a reamer/mining tool. Principles of the concept have been proven viable in this investigation.

MACKA Y, S.Se. (Chem. Eng.) (Visitor). The general behaviour of mills is described in an attempt to find a control philosophy that will permit milling circuits to produce a constant particle size. Although the experimental work has been confined to a single section of the milling circuit of one mine, it is felt that the findings are applicable to other milling circuits.

Reviewer: R. Graham The chemistry of gold extraction by John Marsden and lain House. Elis Horwood Series in Metals and Associated Materials. Chichester, Elis Horwood. £80. The chronology has been well researched, and the book defines al the milestones. It is a pity that there is no map of the early gold finds in South Africa, which would have offered a comparison with those shown of Australia and the USA. Nevertheless, the 'Pre-cyanidation, Cyanidation and Technical Development' eras fall logically into place, and reflect on the advances in social history and civilization, as well as in technology.

The limitations of gold-mine evaluation by P. R. JANISCH, B.Sc. (Sur.) (Natal) (Visitor) Inherent uncertainty in the choice of parameter values places theoretical and practical limitations on the interpretation of a gold-mine valuation that are not necessarily removed by comparison of two valuations on the same assumptions. These limitations arise mainly in the estimates made of cost inflation and gold-price escalation, and lead to inconsistencies in the 'league table' method of investment analysis. The choice of discount rate is also critical in many cases. An approach to the overall problem that takes these limitations into account is suggested.

An Analytical Solution to the Batch comminution Equation R. P. King, Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Eng.), M. Se. (Eng.), Ph.D. (Visitor). An analytical solution to the batch-grinding equation is presented in terms of the generalized hypergeometric series and the confluent hypergeometnc function. This solution is valid for selection functions that are describe~ piece-wise by functional forms of the type KOXB and by normalized breakage functions of the type B(x,x') = (x/x')x. These functional forms are sufficiently general to Include most practical cases. In particular, they can be used to describe selection functions that have a maximum.

The pumping of water from mines in the Central Witwatersrand by J. A. TYSER, Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Min.) (Associate) This paper describes a system for the removal of underground water in the mines of the Central Witwatersrand, some of which are defunct. The water is pumped by a pump station on 24 level at E.R.P.M. to a surface lime plant and then to a surface treatment plant, where it is treated so that it meets the specification of the Department of Water Affairs relating to the deposition of water in public streams.

The Soutpansberg Coalfield hosts South Africa's hard coking coal reserves. However, coals in this region are understudied compared to other coalfields in the country. This study characterizes the properties of fine-float fraction samples extracted from a wide diameter borehole core in the Makhado Project, Tshipise sub-basin, Soutpansberg coalfield. Conventional analyses were used to determine the coal quality, petrographic composition, mineralogy, geochemistry (including trace element and rare earth element composition), and free swelling index of samples from six coal horizons and three partings from the economic No.6 Seam. The coal samples are classified as medium rank bituminous C coals (0.88 %RoVmr, 0.92 %Rmax) and are highly vitrinitic in composition (97 vol% mineral matter free (mmf)). The samples show strong caking potential (FSI of 9). The total rare earth concentrations range between 570 and 3193 ppm in the ash samples. Preliminary analysis show all but two samples are promising sources of rare earth elements as the total concentrations exceeded the 1000 ppm cut-off grade. Further research is required to confirm these preliminary findings.
