The anchorage capacity of four types of bolting systems was investigated in two mines with thick coal roofs. In conjunction with the in-mine tests, a simple axisymmetric finite element computer program was developed. Both the field and computer results indicated that thick coal roofs can be effectively supported entirely by the coal member.

The United States Bureau of Mines contracted Norecol to prepare a report identifying the regulatory processes associated with metal mine development in British Columbia using the Snip Mine as a case study. The intent of this study is to assist industry and regulatory agencies in developing understanding as to differences in objectives, perspectives and operating methods. The case study will be incorporated into a larger report summarizing the comparative advantages and disadvantages of metal mine permitting in British Columbia and Alaska. The purpose of the report is to identify the development schedule and permitting process at Snip which will assist the U.S. Bureau of Mines in suggesting improvements in environmental review and permitting processes for mine developments. The report provides an abstract of the environmental assessment review processes in Canada and the Mine Development Review Process in British Columbia and provides an understanding of the linkages between policy, legislation, and environmental review.

[The accepted theory of acid formation in coal mines with the subsequent appearance of the acid in coal-mine drainage, is oxidation of iron pyrite and subsequent solution and hydrolysis of the iron sulphate formed. It has also been found that 5 gobbed sections and worked-out areas, where there is usually an abundance of iron pyrite-bearing, materials in contact with air, are the sections that make the most important contribution to the quantity of acid drainage. It would thus seem obvious that if oxygen can be kept out of contact with tae acid-forming materials in tie- sections mentioned the amount of acid in coal-mine drainage could be reduced markedly and corrosion problems with mine pumping equipment and general stream pollution mitigated thereby. Although the efficiency of the suggested remedy as been borne out by laboratory experiments6, it has appeared desirable to substantiate the laboratory work by field observations in so far as pertinent data are available. It has been difficult to learn of mines or sections of mines about to be sealed, whereby an actual comparison of the drainage before and after sealing can be made. In view of that difficulty it has been necessary to devote attention to a comparison of the character of the water from areas already sealed with that from open but otherwise comparable sections of the sane mine. Previous cork has shown that the acidity of drainage in different parts of the same mine may vary, but if it can be shown also that the water from sealed areas is with but fen exceptions less acid than the otherwise similar open sections of tae same mine, the laboratory finding will be supported in a practical gray. This report presents some of the evidence that has been obtained.]

Limestone is the most widely used of all racks and is essential to a great many industries, including tae building trades, highway construction, metallurgy, agriculture, end many chemical and manufacturing enterprises. It occurs in some form in every State and is produced in thousands of quarries. Production in 1930 exceeded 134,000,000 tons. It has more numerous and more diversified uses than any other rock. This paper is designed to furnish general information on the various branches of limestone quarrying and their economic importance. Brief reference is made to dimension stone, and a more complete discussion follows of the uses, requisite qualities, quarry methods, grid processes of preparation of crushed and broken limestone. Footnote references serve to guide the reader to more detailed information.

This paper, describing the mining method at the Black Butte quicksilver mine, is one of a series of papers being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various districts of the United States. It is presented to show the mining practice and costs in the successful treatment of low-grade quicksilver deposits. The operation discussed is an excellent example of w1-pat can be done in working a limited tonnage of low-grade ore under sound management. The Black Butte mine is situated at Black Butte, Lane County, in the southern part of the State of Oregon, 17-1/2 miles from Cottage Grove -- a station on the Siskiyou branch of the Southern Pacific Co. The Black Butte mining district lies in the foothills of the Calapooia Mountain Range, which connects with the Cascade Range on the east and with the Coast Range on the west. The elevation at '.lie reduction plant is 1,000 feet above sea level. The apex of Black Butte Mountain, or which the mine is situated, has an elevation of 2,700 feet. The district possesses exceptional natural facilities infrequently met with elsewhere for the mining and reduction of cinnabar ores. Among the numerous Low-grade manganese deposits in eastern Aroostook County, Maine, the Dudley deposit near Mapleton in the northern district is one of the few known to contain an appreciable tonnage averaging above 10 percent manganese. The ore body, consisting of stratified manganiferous hematitic shale, is over 5,000 feet long and ranges in width from 30 to 175 feet. The deposit was extensively explored during 1942-44 by the Manganese Ore Co., a subsidiary of M. A. Hanna Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. Data obtained from this work were made available to the State and Federal Geological Surveys for estimating ore reserves. An estimate by the Maine Geological Survey, using a 10-percent manganese cutoff and to a depth of 200 feet, shows 609,000 long tons of manganese metal in material averaging 12.6 percent manganese. By lowering the cutoff limit to 5 percent manganese, the estimate was increased to 919,000 long tons of metallic manga¬nese in material averaging, 10.4 percent manganese,

Shales from 14 locations in Indiana were sampled , tested , and evaluated to determine feasibility of producing lightweight aggregates by rotary - kiln and sintering methods . Sampling procedures and the geology of the significant shale units are discussed . Preliminary testing was conducted in a muffle furnace , and continuous tests were made in a 16 - inch by 14 - foot rotary kiln . The aggregate weighed 37.0 to 47.2 pounds per cubic foot . Concrete cubes employing the aggregate were tested to determine the qualities of the concrete . Compressive strength of the concrete using seven bags of cement per cubic yard , after autoclave curing for 6 hours , ranged from 3,600 to 5,850 pounds per square inch . Four samples made suitable lightweight aggregate in the laboratory rotary kiln . Four samples tested by sintering methods made unsatisfactory aggregate .

A spectrochemical procedure applicable to the determination of iron, manganese, and magnesium in titanium metal and to the determination of alloying constituents in three types of titanium alloys is presented. Acid solutions of samples and standards are excited with a spark-type discharge and porous-cup electrode arrangement. The method is particularly applicable for analyzing samples for which a self-electrode method cannot be used. Calibrations are accomplished with synthetic standard solutions, resulting in a primary method that makes calibrations based upon results of other analytical methods unnecessary. Replicate determinations are reproduced to within 5 percent, and the average percentage deviations from reliable chemical values are less than 6 percent. The method can be extended readily to determine additional elements that are similarly soluble and have similar spectral sensitivities. It also can be used as a starting point to establish standards for a direct sparking procedure for analyzing titanium alloys. In view of the absence of established reliable analytical methods in the titanium industry, the spectrochemical method described here should prove to be a timely contribution.

This Country Documentation Report presents the development of economic indices for Zambia for the period from 1970 through 1981. The work done through the Bureau of' Mines, Minerals Availability Program, under Contract number J0225001. This contract calls for the development of twelve index time series describing factor input costs in the mining sector of 95 countries. The twelve index time series describe the costs of: 1) mining wages, 2) construction wages, 3) equipment and repair parts, 4) bits and related steel, 5) timber and lumber, 6) fuel, 7) powder and blasting agents, 8) tires, 9) construction materials, 10) industrial materials, 11) transportation, and 12) electrical power. These indices combined with weight factors being developed by the personnel of the Minerals Availability Field Office (MAFO) of the Bureau of Mines in Denver, Colorado, will be used to perform instantaneous updates of all costs relating to the mining industry. The indices were developed primarily for use in the Bureau's Minerals Availability Program in assessing the worldwide availability of nonfuel minerals.

The Lake Lynn Laboratory is a multipurpose mining research laboratory operated by the Bureau of Mines and located in Fairchance, Pa, It consists of both surface and underground facilities. The initial focus of the facility, scheduled for full operation in fall 1982, will be on the problems of fires and explosions in mines. The initial experimental explosion was fired on March 3, 1982. The intent of this document is to provide the reader with detailed information on the physical capabilities of the Lake Lynn Laboratory. Subsequent publications will focus on the capabilities of Lake Lynn as compared with those of other similar facilities worldwide, and a comparison of initial explosion test results realized at Lake Lynn and comparable results from the Bruceton Experimental Mines.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Survey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. Nuclear explosive fracturing has been suggested as a method to make hard rock amenable to extraction by a modified block-caving method. To evaluate this possibility, conventional and nuclear blasting practices are discussed, underground mining methods for large deposits and their costs are described, and the cost of fracturing ore with a nuclear explosive and subsequent mining by a modified caving system is estimated and compared with both open-stope and block-caving mining costs. While the direct cost of fracturing the ore in hard rock with a nuclear explosive is less than with conventional explosives, additional costs imposed by the use of nuclear explosives may make their use unattractive for deep mining.

During the 1982 Bureau of Mines study, 55 lode and 17 placer claims were held in the RARE II area. An estimated 150 lode claims and 50 placer claim, have been located in the study area; five were patented. There are no mineral leases. Gold has been produced from 8 lode mines and stream gravels have been worked for placer gold at 4 sites. Two suction dredges were active in stream gravels, but no significant gravel bars are identified. Identified mineral resources in the Weaver Bally area are gold and byproduct silver. The identified resources are at the Globe Mine, where approximately 33,000 tons of indicated marginal reserves (2,000 tons in the RARE II area, and 31,000 tons in the adjacent proposed Trinity Alps Wilderness) contain 0.45 oz gold per ton and probably 0.1 oz silver per ton. There are an additional 150,000 tons of inferred marginal reserves (35,000 tons in the RARE II area, and 115,000 tons in the adjacent proposed wilderness) averaging 0.38 oz gold per ton and probably 0.1 oz silver per ton. There is high potential for additional resources at the Globe Mine.

The Valery fluorspar deposit , also known as the Hamilton deposit , is northeast of Lovelock and 4 miles by poor dirt road east of U. S. Highway 40 . It is in the Humboldt Mining District , on the west side of the Humboldt Range , at an altitude of 6,000 to 6,500 feet . The property was examined by the Bureau of Mines on February 83/ and April 8 , 1944.4/ The last examination was made with an engineer of the Geological Survey.5/ Exploring by means of trenches , cuts , shaft sinking , coyote holes off the shaft , and a small amount of prospecting with short drill holes , was begun in January 1945 and was completed June 30 , 1945. An engineer6/ of the Geological Survey visited the property in April and again in June 1945 to complete a topographic map of the area and to note the results of exploration by the Bureau of Mines . Only minor surface exploring had been done on fluorspar occurrences previous to the Bureau's work . No mining equipment or living facilities are on the property .

The objective of this program is to identify and evaluate superior, lightweight substitutes for selected coal mine roof support concepts such as crossbars, posts, and crib blocks. Engineering analysis and concept design identified, through tradeoff studies, that some materials are promising, from a technical standpoint, as support substitutes: E-glass reinforced polyester resin, high strength low alloy steel, aluminum, and very high early strength (VHE) cement. An economic analysis indicates that none of the lightweight substitutes are economically competitive with wood on an initial cost basis; however, in terms of life cycle costs based on current dollars, the high strength low alloy steel appears competitive for crossbars, and the VHE cement and E-glass/resin appear competitive for posts.

Analyses of samples of crude oil from fields in West Texas have been published from time to time in Bureau of Mines reports.3/ Analyses of 100 samples of crude oil from West Texas) collected during 1946 to 1952) are presented in this report. The production of crude oil from the fields in this portion of Texas totaled 381,129,000 barrels4/ during 1951 - an amount greater than that of any previous year. Silica , or silicon dioxide , ( Si0, ) , occurs in a free state chiefly as quartz , but hydrous silica ( amorphous silica carrying a variable amount of combined water , 2 to 13 per cent ) , occurs as opal , flint , diatomaceous earth , tripoli and so on . Quartz is found in many forms , the most important of which are ; As vein quartz; quartzite ; sandstone ; silica sand and gravel ; as crystals or crystalline grains , masses or aggregates in igneous rocks such as granites , dicrites and pegmatites . Commercially silica is used in many ways , but ordinary uses of sand and gravel are so well known that they will not be considered here .

This study has been prompted by the anticipated demand for rhenium by the petroleum industry and the concern for an adequate supply of rhenium to meet the demand. The present and projected outlook for rhenium relative to its distribution and occurrences, the recovery factors involved in ore beneficiation, capital and operating costs, changing technology, and the projected uses and market growth of rhenium are presented in this report as part of the Bureau of Mines program to determine the availability of recoverable rhenium in a developing market.
