AECL Research (AECL) has constructed an Underground Research Laboratory (URL) as a facility for research and development in the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program. The objectives of the program are to develop and evaluate the technology to ensure safe, permanent disposal of Canada's nuclear fuel waste. Several multidisciplinary experiments and engineering demonstrations are planned for the URL over the next ten years.

Homestake Mining Corporations' open cut operation at Lead SD. experienced a highwall failure in October of 1993. The failure released a 75' section of rock wall at the 5280' level. It came to rest on the 5200' safety bench. Since work was in progress below the failure, this rock had to be removed for safety.

In early 1993 a test program was designed to determine if mining costs could be reduced by using a high density ammonium nitrate mini-prill blasting agent. The goal was to reduce mining costs by expanding blast hole patterns while maintaining or improving dig-ability of the shot material. The program was conducted at Santa Fe Pacific Gold's Lone Tree gold mine near Valmy, Nevada.

As well as destruction and moving rock, the blast energy sets up a seismic wave in the ground and a shock wave in the air, which can present danger to buildings and disturbance to human occupants. This shock air wave potentially can cause to destruction of a window glass, the window and door frames and partitions of buildings. Metal-oxidant blends are ordinarily unsuitable as diiect replacements for explosives, because the reaction occurs too slowly. Oxide coatings protect metals, preventing or delaying reaction. By contrast, the electrically-activated reactive composites described below are configured as metal fibers or foils in close proximity to oxidants, with continuous electrical paths from one end to the other. By quickly vaporizing the metal component with an electrical pulse, a reactive composite will be activated, and the reaction will occur rapidly.

The reformulation of military explosives and solid propellants into commercial explosives offers a unique solution to the problem of disposing of high energy materials with essentially zero environmental impact at a low cost and with a salable product. Studies using the insensitive PBX PBXN-4 have been completed through the pilot plant stage and have been successfully tested as a mining explosive. A number of other military explosives have been examined and their VODs and heats of explosions determined and in some instances tested in 'field" operations.

Proper selection of stemming has a profound effect on blast performance. This paper describes several methods of evaluating stemming performance in 16-inch blastholes. Tests are done on stemming ranging in size from nominal 1/4" crushed rock up to railroad ballast size rock (2 1/2" > diameter < 3/4"). Concrete plugs (both pre-cast and poured) are evaluated as well as air decking.

By recording the arrival time of a pipe wall at evenly spaced intervals in a plane perpendicular to the pipe axis, application of the equations of motion permits calculation of the pressure of the explosive acting to accelerate the pipe wall. Data observed from various non-ideal explosives are presented, together with values of pressure to be expected from thermodynamic calculations.

The word "slurry" was used by Dr. Melvin Cook and Mr. Henry Farnam to describe a new blasting agent developed in 1956. This development, along with the development of ANFO triggered the Modern Era of Blasting. We have seen the results, a massive expansion in the commercial explosives industry. Someone once said, "You can't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been." With that in mind, this paper deals to some extent with the origin and development of slurry explosives and then with their future high potential.

This paper presents the results from a series of tests conducted to investigate the total vertical impulse delivered to a target plate by a buried explosive charge. The tests were conducted at a very small scale but previous work has shown that small scale testing can predict impulse applied to plates in full scale. Non-deforming plates were used to determine the change in impulse delivered to targets as a result of changes in standoff distance and burial depth changes.
