The WNW-ESE-trending hydrothermal veins cut alternating mica schists and quartzites of mainly Ordovician age and, to the west, a Hercynian muscovite-biotite granite. They have been prospected and developed to a depth of 300 m and reserves of 20 t Au estimated. The paragenetic sequence and chemical compositions of the ore minerals are generally similar to those at Jales to the south. Gold, electrum and aurian silver form inclusions in arsenopyrite, pyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrrhotite and quartz and also occur in veinlets that cut these minerals. Silver has been found in gold, electrum, aurian silver, tetrahedrite, freibergite and the Ag-Pb-Sb sulphide owyheeite. Early arsenopyrite crystallised at an estimated 480 degrees C and the more common, later arsenopyrite in which Au and Ag are generally included at 430-300 degrees C. Sphalerite crystallised at 307-100 degrees C. Monoclinic pyrrhotite may have been formed by the inversion of hexagonal pyrrhotite at 248 degrees C

A thermodynamic analysis of the sulphation of rare-earth phosphates and the water-leaching of rare-earth sulphates was used to guide experimental work on the sulphation and leaching of concentrates from Pitinga. It was concluded that the sulphuric acid digestion of xenotime is technically feasible and could be used industrially to produce yttrium and other rare-earth oxides. Yttrium extractions of more than 90% were obtained by digestion at 503 K for 4 h at an acid:concentrate ratio of 2:1 with particle size -0.053 mm. The apparent activation energy at temperatures less than 473 K, as determined from the Arrhenius plot, was 11.0 kJ/mol, indicating that the reaction is controlled by the diffusion of the reactants or products through the sulphate layer

Computer simulations were carried out using calcium ferrite slags containing 25 wt% CaO, and the results compared with those obtained using fayalite slags. There was little difference in overall elimination of Pb and Bi, but elimination of Sb and As was much lower with calcium ferrite slag. When calcium ferrite slag is used only in the converting stage and fayalite slag in the smelting stage, as in the Mitsubishi process, the contents of Sb and As in the blister copper can be kept to reasonable levels. This allows advantage to be taken of the considerably higher iron oxide-holding capacity of calcium ferrite slag than of fayalite slag at the high oxygen potential under converting conditions, thus preventing precipitation of magnetite. Shearer drums are a critical component in the overall performance of coal shearers, with the cutting performance depending very much on the disposition of cutter tools on the drums (the tool-lacing arrangement). A series of practical and theoretical studies has been undertaken to investigate aspects of shearer drum vibration in terms of circumferential pick spacing. A number of commercially available drums were redesigned and the lacing patterns compared with those of the original drums under near-uniform conditions. Mine trials were carried out at the Middle Anatolian lignite mine in Turkey with drums fitted on Eickhoff type EDW-230 double-ranging drum shearers. It was found that the performance of drums could be improved if the concept of circumferential pick spacing was taken into account in CAD packages along with the existing design parameters such as cutting rate, reduced dust, low pick consumption and low down-time

An important conclusion of the study is that altering the properties of the granulation water is a practical way of improving the sintering performance of blends that contain porous ores, and more work is under way to investigate other additives. Previous studies of iron ore blends containing pisolite ore showed that losses in sintering productivity were a result of deteriorating green-bed permeability. Pisolite ores are extremely porous and absorb a proportion of the water added during granulation. Although increased water addition could be used to counteract losses in productivity, the current study examined methods of inhibiting water absorption by pisolite ore as a means of improving productivity. Additives were used to alter the properties of the granulating water. With no increase in mix moisture contents pilot-scale sintering studies showed that sugar-based additives gave productivities that are higher than those obtained for a comparable ore blend containing haematite rather than the pisolitic ore. Several techniques of adding the sugar to the sinter mix were examined and found to increase productivity to varying degrees. Theoretical considerations, in some cases supported by experimental results, indicate that sugar-based additives not only inhibited water absorption by porous ore particles but also improved the permeability of the sintering bed. The study also suggested that, contrary to some commonly held views, the highly reactive nature of Yandi ore from Western Australia is beneficial for sintering. Porous ores enabled the formation of a strong sinter at fast flame-front speeds-both good strength and a short sintering time are requirements for high-productivity operation

In the Box-Wilson method, the correlation between dependent and independent variables is represented by a polynomial response function, whose constant and coefficients are determined by applying regression analysis to the experimental data collected. The five levels used for each variable consist of a minimum, a maximum and three intermediate values. A study was carried out using Ni-Cu ore from Sudbury, Ontario, in which 15 experiments designed according to the Box-Wilson method were carried out in random order and in duplicate. The two sets of replicate data showed close similarity, with an overall variance of 0.311 for the five parameters studied. The response functions were used to optimise frother dosage, collector concentration and air flow rate and an experiment was then carried out under the optimised conditions; the results agreed closely with those predicted by the response functions

A floating gold dredge operating in coarse alluvial gravels of the Grey River on the west coast of the South Island, New Zealand, generated high concentrations of clay and colloidal particles in the dredge pond, which entered the groundwater system. Sampling was carried out at depths down to 20 m and it was found that variation of the length of the flow path occurred because of the movement of the dredge towards the piezometers. The alluvial gravels, the suspended sediments, the groundwater system and the water chemistry were all studied. Sediment concentrations were found to be highly variable with depth, but the relative concentrations in the depth profile were generally consistent as the flow distance shortened. The sediments were extremely fine and travelled further through the gravels than predicted. Comparison of field results with the available theory of deep filtration in clean beds of porous media gives some basis for estimating the behaviour of fine sediments in other alluvial systems

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. The complex exemplifies a class of olivine-rich, platiniferous ophiolite complexes generated by unusually high degrees of hydrous melting above a subduction zone. Crystallisation of abundant olivine from unusually picritic magmas produced an exceptionally thick sequence of crustal dunite cumulates. Significant (1-4 ppm) concentrations of Pt+Pd occur where sulphide-bearing dunites are spatially associated with podiform chromite concentrations. In the area north of the Balta Sound, the chromitites appear to lie in distinct stratigraphic zones. A detailed programme of lithogeochemical and soil-rock interface geochemical exploration led to the intersection by diamond drilling of three stratiform horizons of sulphide-bearing dunites and associated precious-metal mineralisation. Patterns of cryptic geochemical layering, at scales from 200 m to less than 1 cm, suggests open-system fractionation

Surface drainage samples, the usual media employed in mapping national territories, cannot be used for the geochemical mapping of carbonate terrains because there is no regular surface-drainage pattern on karst. Suitable sampling media have been studied in Yugoslavia, one-third of which consists of karst terrain. Sampling designs for the work were based on analysis of variance techniques. During initial investigations of various sampling materials in NW Yugoslavia sediment and aquatic moss from karst springs, along with soil, were established as the most appropriate media. Modified sampling procedures were then carefully applied along the entire Yugoslav karst belt, which includes terrains of contrasting topography, climate, pedology and vegetation. The studies indicate that climate and relief do not systematically influence the geochemical composition of soil. Regional and local variability was assessed for 21 chemical elements and the feasibility of producing stable regional geochemical maps was determined for a number of elements on the basis of sampling aquatic moss and sediment from karst springs and soil

Although other energy commodities have developed successful futures contracts, long-term contracts still dominate the coal market. To establish whether coal markets will develop in the same way, coal price and volume data are tested against a set of criteria considered to represent some of the factors contributing to the development of a successful futures contract. Coal meets only some of the criteria: market players are subject to little risk in quite a stable market, have strong preferences for the specific nature of long-term contracts and profit from product uniqueness, each trade being individually negotiated. Potential structural changes in the western European market are not felt to be sufficient to create demand for a coal futures contract, but an empirical model has been developed that could form the basis of a further study to predict the potential for success

Variations of the temperature and steam/moisture content of the air with distance and time are modelled for a single airway. The input for the simulation is an air temperature that varies with time, together with the moisture/steam content that results, for example, from a fire with a given distribution of heat and of fume concentrations at the beginning of the airway. The transport of heat and moisture to the surface of the wallrock is assumed to be simultaneous. Such multiphase convection may result in evaporation from the moist wall close to the fire and recondensation downstream. The modelling of this non-linear effect is a unique feature of the new simulation. A new analytical solution is used to calculate the conduction of transient heat within the rock mantle, which, in the event of a fire, is typically a short-term process. This allows for an arbitrary variation of surface temperature with time - unlike that permitted by the age function solution, which is limited to stepped temperature changes. An iterative numerical scheme that has recently been developed to simulate mine climate is used to calculate the coupled transient heat conduction and multiphase surface heat transport in successive length increments along the airway. To demonstrate the simulation procedure a numerical example is presented in which a fire with a given distribution of heat and fume concentrations with time is located at the beginning of an airway

To improve SO2 emission compliance, pyrrhotite from Sudbury copper-nickel ores is being depressed with DETA. To understand the mechanism of depression, the role of complexing in controlling metal-ion activation of pyrrhotite was investigated. DETA was found to remove Cu and Ni ions but leave hydrophilic ferric species on the pyrrhotite surface. The metal:DETA ratio appeared to be 1:2. Cu was more readily removed than Ni, but the combination of DETA with sulphur dioxide was equally effective for both metal ions. Certain combinations of DETA, Ni ions, xanthate and dithionite (S2O4) or dithionate (S2O6), as representative derivatives of SO2 in water, produced hydrophilic precipitates. The process for bio-remediation of sulphidic slag (BROSS) operates at 45 degrees C in a neutral (pH 7), aerobic aqueous environment in which sulphide in the slag is converted to sulphate. A two-stage version has been developed that involves quantitative chemical pre-oxidation of total sulphide to thiosulphate, followed by complete biooxidation of thiosulphate to sulphate. Ferric hydroxide, also produced, acts as a flocculant in the bioreactor effluent, concentrating heavy metal precipitates in the thickener as a sludge which can be returned to the smelter. The process has a high sulphate production rate and low acid and nutrient consumptions. Microorganism growth is the rate-limiting stage, requiring a minimum liquid residence time in the bioreactor of about 7 h. Although large quantities of oxygen are needed, sufficient gas mass transfer can be attained in an air-lift reactor. Products are an aqueous stream containing sodium sulphate with only trace levels of toxic heavy metals and a benign, toxic metal-containing sludge

Powder and spherical pellets of MoO2 were oxidised under controlled conditions in the temperature range 674-791 K at oxygen partial pressures of 8.1-30.4 kPa. Weight increase during the reaction was determined by thermogravimetric analysis. It was concluded that the reaction is 0.6th order with respect to oxygen concentation and that the activation energy is 148 kJ/mole. In experiments conducted with powder, fast transfer of reaction heat to the gas phase created isothermal conditions, but the temperature of pellets rose by a maximum of 54 K at 674 K and 105 K at 791 K. The rise in temperature caused structural changes such as sintering and crack formation, which had a considerable effect on the reaction rate. The findings should be taken into account in the design of equipment and choice of operating conditions for roasting MoS2

In this method the state of an open-pit mine is represented by the number of benches that are mined in each predesigned mining phase (or pushback). Consequently, a specific mining schedule can be represented by a sequence of states which starts with the topography of the mine site and ends with the ultimate pit. For a given set of mining phases all feasible states are first generated and sequences of states are then evaluated for technical and economical feasibility. The best sequence, which gives the maximum net present value (NPV), is found by applying a dynamic programming optimisation algorithm. The algorithm also optimises the cut-off grade which satisfies the mill feed requirement for each planning period. It was found that the algorithm can be used not only for scheduling but also as an effective tool for analysing the effects of mining and milling capacities and cut-off constraints on the mining schedule and the total NPV. The algorithm, which was programmed in C, was successfully applied to a large Au-Cu deposit

The Hg and Sb deposits of the Mediterranean and Circum-Pacific Belts are often found at elevated structural levels, suggesting that their preferential occurrence in young orogenic belts is not a fundamental metallogenic feature but merely reflects their chances of surviving post-orogenic peneplanation. In western Europe their emplacement appears often to be related to late orogenic extensional events accompanied by a notable increase in heat flow. Although Nikitovka and Almaden have quite different settings, both appear to be related to deep-reaching shears. Together with brittle fault zones at higher levels, these provided pathways for fluid phases that originated at least partially within the mantle. The Nikitovka deposits are located in the Donets segment of the 2 000 km Pripyat-Dniepr-Donets palaeorift in the East European Platform. Initiated in the mid-Devonian with a possible Precambrian precursor, its listric boundary faults displace the Moho from a depth of about 50 km north and south of the rift to 35 km along the axes of the Pripyat and Dniepr segments. The steep central anticline of the Donets segment, within which the main Hg-Sb district is located, is interpreted to be associated with a reactivated fault reaching into the upper mantle. The Almaden syncline, formed during the Variscan Orogeny, may be an older pull-apart basin or half-graben associated with the collapse of the Cadomian Orogenic Belt. It is situated on a major ENE-WSW-striking shear zone which may represent a Late Cadomian transfer zone reaching into the mantle
