The aim of this study is to produce desiccant clay from a well known Ca-bentonite deposit in Turkey. Towards this aim, bentonite samples were first procured and then subjected to some characterization tests. Various methods were applied to enhance the moisture adsorption capacity of bentonites to a desirable level. These methods include utilization of some additives namely calcium chloride and heat treatment at various temperatures. It is shown that the moisture adsorption capacity Ca-bentonites without any additive are between 14%~17 % (w/w) upon by heat treatment whereas the addition of calcium chloride significantly, raised the moisture adsorption capacities.

At projecting mining-concentrating complex at the deposit ?Zapadnoye? (Russia) it was considered to enable an opportunity of refusal from conventional SAG-mills. First time a scheme of gold bearing ore destruction using Roller Press RP 5-100/90 had been developed and integrated. The plant was launched in summer 2003 and presently it has achieved designed technological parameters, processing throughput comes to 1 million tons of the ore per year.

"The major losses of PGM and base metals in the beneficiation of platinum group deposits occur during the separation of gangue from the value minerals by selective flotation. A number of studies have shown that this negative impact on flotation is due to surface passivation, caused by various ions that may originate from the external water supply or, as is likely in the majority of cases, from the oxidation of the mineral surfaces and the grinding media. This investigation aimed at reducing surface passivation of pentlandite and inadvertent activation of pyroxene, thereby improving ultimate valuable mineral recovery and selectivity. Both synthetic minerals and plant ores were studied in order to determine the effect surface passivation and inadvertent activation have on mineral surface alteration and floatability. Zeta potential determinations, microflotation, ToF-SIMS (Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) analyses, laboratory batch flotation tests and continuous flotation testwork were used as tools to study the surface alteration and/or floatability.Zeta potential determinations and ToF-SIMS analyses showed that copper adsorption is non-selective. Both pentlandite and pyroxene become copper (II)-activated in the presence of copper sulphate and subsequently, in the presence of xanthate, adsorption of the collector will occur onto copper activated mineral surfaces. Zeta potential determinations also showed an alteration of the surface charge in the presence of polyphosphate, thereby inhibiting surface passivation of sulphides by slime coatings due to surface repulsion.The addition of diethylenetriamine (DETA) reduces the copper concentration on both minerals, predominantly on the pyroxene surfaces and polyphosphate further enhances the selectivity at pH 6.The microflotation and batch flotation data obtained has shown a significant improvement in the ultimate flotation response of valuable mineral recovery and concentrate grade compared to the standard reagent regime, while the continuous flotation results significantly improved the selectivity, however, at a similar ultimate recovery."

Traditional technologies can hardly be applied (Chanturia, 2017; Bazin et al., 2014; Ponaryadov, 2017). The urgency of development of the concept of technological mineralogy focuses on the confirmation of new methods and approaches to the development of mineral raw, creation of scientific and methodological prerequisites for solving the problem of rational development of mineral raw, maximal extraction and integrated application of all minerals (both principal and associated), expansion and strengthening of mineral and raw base. The article is aimed at updating tasks that should be addressed within the applied mineralogical researches: – the forecast of quality of ore at early stages of exploration and technological indicators for the redistribution of raw, – interactive monitoring of these indicators by mineralogical and analytical methods; – assessment of environmental consequences of mining and processing of minerals and measures that eliminate these consequences."

"The purpose of the research is to study the mineralogical features of the structure of the wall accretion formed during melting on the working surface of the walls of metallurgical aggregates and adversely affect the stability of the lining of blast furnaces (BF). We presented the results of studies of the material composition of lining and wall accretion of the furnaces of blast furnaces of the metallurgical plant specializing in the smelting of ferromanganese, nodular and pig iron. It is established that the garnissage is an aggregate of layered texture, formed as a result of the crystallization of slag and metallic melts. Refractory calcium and magnesium silicates and aluminosilicates (minerals of the melilite group, leicite, olivine group minerals) and amorphous glassy oxide solid solutions of variable composition crystallize from the slag melts in the upper part of the hearth. In the slag matrix, inclusions of carbon (amorphous and graphite) and products of crystallization of metallic melts of alpha-iron, iron carbides and / or manganese are observed. Evidence of carbon evolution (in the form of graphite) is precisely in the crystallization of metal melts, there are significant differences in the structure of carbon in coke and in the garnissage. The conducted studies confirm that it is impossible to obtain reliable information on the material composition of new formations in the blast-furnace process without using a complex of modern methods of technological mineralogy.INTRODUCTION The formation of the wall accretion (garnissage) - a solid protective layer as a result of smelting products crystallization on the inner (working) surface of the liner. This is due to the design of blast furnaces with a high-efficiency heat sink using copper coolers and the use of carbon blocks with high thermal conductivity in the lining. The objective of the study was research of the material composition of the lining and wall accretion of the blast furnace hearth of one metallurgical plant that specialized in smelting ferromanganese, nodular and pig iron, to assess the effect of new formations for stability of the lining of blast furnaces (BF)."

"CFM pneumatic flotation machines were developed by the Institute of Materials Science and Metallurgy, UrFU, and designed to concentrate a wide range of ores and man-made materials. A key principle of work is pulp preparation for flotation owing to its saturation with finely dispersed air bubbles in ejectors. CFM plants, their advantages over domestic and foreign prototypes are described. CFM pneumatic machine commercialization resulted in: - machines demonstrated high floatation efficiency for concentration of rebellious pyrrhotite-bearing copper and zink by simultaneous floatation of copper and zinc minerals and depressing pyrrhotite. CFM- 1400M introduction allowed simplifying and optimizing the flow chart and increase extraction of copper - by 5.4%, zinc - by 9.5% and improve the quality of copper (3% Cu) and zinc (1.5% Zn) concentrates. - due to copper pyrite concentration by using CFM 1400M overall copper recovery was increased by 1.5 %, and the content of copper in concentrates - by1%. According to the results of pilot runs, the use of CFM flotation for zinc cakes concentration strongly intensifies the process of cleaning water-soluble metal compounds and, thereby, increases the efficiency of flotation concentration and subsequent milling. CFM machines showed higher specific capacity (three or four times higher) (both for feed material and froth product). Specifically, CFM froth product has higher content of useful elements (silver by 0.014 % abs. zinc by 0.31% abs.) and better extraction (silver by 6.08% abs., zinc by 0.31% abs., and sulfide sulfur by 13.7 %). Sulfide sulfur content of CFM product chamber as compared to mechanical flotation machines is two times lower (0.48 vs. 0.95 %)."

"Flotation processing of water-soluble minerals (potassium ores, sedimentary salts of salt lakes) is currently the main method for production of potassium fertilizers and concentrated carnallite which is the initial product for production of metallic magnesium. Flotation of sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl) is carried out in the electrolyte solutions: KCl-NaCl-H2O and KCl-NaCl-MgCl2-H2O. The report presents the results of studies of the effect of concentration and the electrolyte type on the size of air bubbles in a flotation cell in comparison with the floatability of mineral constituents of potash ores. The floatability in electrolytes of various compositions has been studied: - of sylvite (KCl) by alkylamines, - of halite (NaCl) by alkylmorpholines, - of silicate-carbonate slimes contained in the ore by ethoxylated surfactants. The reagent modes (regimes) activating the flotation desliming of potash ores have been developed."

"Tin sulfide ores and aged man-made products obtained after their processing are distinguished by a complex material composition and uneven impregnation of sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, galena, arsenopyrite, etc.) and tin ore (cassiterite). Enrichment of such ores is performed through sophisticated multistage schemes using not only gravitational methods, but also gravity flotation, flotation, magnetic separation techniques. Tin ores also contain rare and precious metals (indium, scandium, silver), characterized by fine dispersity and microscale to nanoscale fineness of mineral formations. During flotation concentration these metals are extracted along with the main ore minerals into concentrates (tin, copper, tungsten, etc.), however, up to 10-20 % of them are lost with final tailings. The aim of the work is an experimental study of the modification of the surface of sulfide minerals and cassiterite by stable metal-collector complexes to increase extraction of fine tin, silver, copper and other metals from complex tin ores. Triamide cyanuric acid (TCA) was studied as a thin silver flotation modifier. Thermophilic polymer with a functional group of phenylphosphine TMPPh was used as a selective flocculant. For experimental studies of the physical and chemical effects of collecting agents on the surface of minerals the following analytical techniques were used - the analytical scanning electron emission ASEM (LEO 1420VP INCA OXFORD ENERGY 350) and laser (KEYENCE VK-9700) microscopy, measurements of electrode potentials of mineral anthills by potentiometric titration, monomineral and pulp flotation. New data on formation of the adsorbed layer of DBDTC on the surface of chalcopyrite, galena and arsenopyrite were obtained, and the dimensions of the reagent films and the strength of their adsorption. The indiscriminateness of cassiterite to DBDTC ensures its selective separation into a chamber product during the flotation of sulfides. It is shown, that modification of the sulfide surface by stable complexes Me-DBDTC and Ag-TCA-TMPPh will increase the recovery of non-ferrous metals and silver into a collective sulfide concentrate and will provide a high-quality tin concentrate for flotation of tin sulfide ores.The studies were perfomed with the aid of the Russian Science Foundation (Project No. 17-17-01292).INTRODUCTIONTin sulfide ores and aged man-made products obtained after their processing are distinguished by a complex material composition and uneven impregnation of sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, galena, arsenopyrite, etc.) and tin ore (cassiterite). Heterotrophic microorganisms Pseudomonas aureofaciens, microscopic fungi Fusarium sp. and their combinations with some chemical substances were used for gold leaching from refractory ore and flotation concentrateof Akbakaj deposit. All biological additives raised the speed of noble metals dissolution. The best results of gold extraction from ore were in the presence of bacteria or their associations with other solvents and from flotation concentrate in the presence of fungus - 30 % of additional amount of gold. The maximum extraction of gold speed value was during the first 8 hours of process. The electronic-microscopic researches of the ore samples showed almost complete decay of pyrite and arsenopyrite under bacteria influence whereas at chemical leaching most of these minerals stayed uncrushed. The presence of microscopic fungi in flotation concentrate during leaching provided full distraction of pyrite, but some crystals of antimony and arsenopyrite were undestroyed. During cyanide leaching of flotation concentrate there were accumulation of antimony and incomplete pyrite decomposition. Keywords: gold bioleaching, bacteria, fungi, complex solution

Experimental work was performed using a bench scale autoclave to evaluate the effects that leaching temperature, pressure, initial acid concentration, and the solid to liquid ratio have on the behaviour of base metals and platinum group metals in a high-pressure sulphuric acid oxygen leaching system. The concentrations of metals in the leach solution were measured over time at different leaching conditions. At the conditions investigated, the initial acid concentration had the largest influence on the copper leaching kinetics, while the leaching rates of the other precious metals (OPMs: rhodium, ruthenium, and iridium) were highly dependent on the leaching temperature. A set of chemical reactions that can be used to describe the leaching chemistry was proposed, and the associated reaction kinetics were quantified. As a first estimation, the rate expressions were considered first order, and the rate constants were determined using the method of least squares, considering the experimental and predicted concentrations obtained for the different leaching conditions. Of the OPM compounds, the sulphides showed the fastest dissolution rate, followed by OPM alloys, and finally the OPM oxides. During the initial leaching stages, base metals and OPMs competed for the available dissolved oxygen, with oxygen being preferentially used for copper leaching. Precipitation of OPMs during the initial leaching stages can be ascribed to copper and nickel dissolution according to exchange reactions between dissolved OPMs and copper present as digenite or nickel present as polydymite. Control of the autoclave residence time is of particular importance to enhance the selectivity of this leaching step, given the dependence of the PGM leaching rates on the extent of copper dissolution.

"A history of mill strain gaging at Metso is presented. The output of these strain-gaging programs is compared with calculated stress ranges from different finite element solutions. These comparisons expose the amount of approximation that exists in the analytical solutions, starting from geometry, and material properties, and ending with different forms of internal load models. The influence of strain gaging results on mill design and analysis practices is also discussed. While these instrumentation programs are valuable in identifying areas of high stress in mills, and locations of stress concentration factors, they are by no means extensive or comprehensive enough to verify general internal load models. The vast majority of the programs were aimed at getting additional data about potential failure points, rather than describing overall mill stress behavior. This is especially true since the more recent gaging programs have not included the difficult task of gaging the mill rotating structure interior. This paper tries to avoid the novice path of leaping to general conclusions on the basis of insufficient data."

Anodic reaction mechanism of complicated antimony-lead concentrate in Slurry Electrolysis has been investigated by the anodic polarization curves determined under various conditions. The main reactions on the anode are the oxidation of FeCln (2-n), though the oxidation of jamesonite particle on the anode can occur during the whole process, it is less. With the help of mineralogy study and relevant tests, the leaching reaction mechanism of jamesonite and gudmundite during Slurry Electroly-sis has been ascertained also. Because of the oxidation reaction of FeCl3 produced by antimony-lead concentrate itself, the non-oxidation complex acid dissolution of jamesonite, the oxidation complex acid dissolution of gudmundite, and the oxidation of air carried by stirring, the leaching ratio of antimony reaches to about 35% when using HCl-NH4Cl solution to leach antimony-lead concentrate directly. So given the theoretical electric quantity, which to oxide antimony in Slurry Electrolysis, all of antimony, lead and iron, which contained in antimony-lead concentrate, are leached.

Russia is a global antimony market leader. The three major antimony production provinces are Sakha Republic (Yakutia), Krasnoyarsk Territory and Trans-Baikal Territory. Russia’s largest antimony resources are Zhipkozhinsky and Solonechensky deposits in Sakha Republic (Yakutia) and Olimpiadinskoe deposit in Krasnoyarsk Territory. This work demonstrates the efficiency of computer programs and chemical technology aimed at the study of the behavior of collectors used in the processes of flotation of antimony, arsenic and Au (I – III) minerals. The most promising collectors for the flotation of ores containing antimony and gold on the basis of P(V) and compounds with S, O and N atoms were chosen. The mechanisms of interaction with the mixtures of two or three components of collectors were studied. High recovery of antimony and gold was reached in the processing of Au-Sb ores of Sarulah and Sentachan deposits in Sakha (Yakutia). X-ray radiometric methods of separation of antimony ores of Trans-Baikal Territory deposits were proposed. In order to choose the most cost-effective solvents for hydrometallurgical processing of Sb, Au-containing concentrates the method based on clusters formation between transition solvents and antimony minerals was suggested. The nature of Au losses was theoretically revealed in the sulfide-alkaline process. On the base of computer simulation, the formation of various complexes of (KAu) types was developed, for example, hydrosulphidic gold, thiosulfates of gold - Na3AuS4O6, antimony and arsenic gold, trithiostibate (III) and trythioarsenate (III) KAu were produced. The practice of processing of goldantimony concentrates to produce high-quality antimony trioxide and antimony-gold containing alloy (AGCA) regarding the special conditions of the Far North region, were analyzed. The affinage of AGCA was recommended. Creative project development of antimony industry in Russia in order to produce antimony compounds and pigments, including pyriform compounds and flame retardants (antipyrenes) is discussed.

"Flotation is a basic process of beneficiation of mineral raw materials which requires very fine grinding for liberation of valuable minerals. Probably flotation will also play this role in the future. In the case of flotation of difficult-to-upgrade non-ferrous ores, currently one of the most important trends in technology development is solution to fine grinding even down to a few micrometers in size and elaboration of effective flotation technology for such fine particles. Both industrial flotation data and many investigators suggest that the best results of flotation of ore minerals are observed for particle size range from 20 to 100 µm. Many base metal ores require grinding below 20, or even 10 µm, to liberate valuable ore components. However, industrial flotation of particles below 20 µm in size creates numerous challenges. Further complications may be caused by a complex nature of the ore, especially when the valuable metals are present in several different sulfide minerals. This problem occurs in the case of the Polish sedimentary copper ores. In the present study, flotation of the ore of different size distributions and degrees of grinding, having the size of particles below 25 µm, was investigated. The behavior of different sulfide minerals naturally present in the ore was analyzed. The best results of flotation tests were obtained for the ore ground down to 95% below 25 µm. Narrow size fractions -10; 10-15; 15-25; 25-40, and +40 µm were separated using special micro-sieves and mineralogical as well as chemical analyses of each size fraction were carried out for monitoring the behavior of the fine sulfide particles. Differences between flotation of chalcocite-digenite, bornite, chalcopyrite, covellite, galena and pyrite-marcasite naturally occurring in the ore were described. The role of different particle sizes in flotation performance of each mineral was also presented."

"The history of mineral processing is indeed long and has always been tied to mining methods of the day. While many new processes and devices have been developed, the most significant trend in recent times has been the ever increasing scale of operations. There is serious doubt this ongoing trend is enough to match the global trend of falling grades and rising energy demands needed for mineral processing. As well we see that globally, the social licence to operate for mining (and hence mineral processing) is far from secure. Indeed, some argue that mining as we know it is dying and in the future, mining will be much more environmentally secure, even to the extent of insisting upon “in place” recovery and only bringing to the surface the valued product. In this paper we comment on the ramifications of broader uptake of more sustainable mining for mineral processing methods and address the specific question of whether recent progress in in place recovery will lead to a timely breakthrough. The answer proposed is that this is possible in the next 10 - 20 years but in the meantime, the focus is just as likely to be on removal of waste much earlier in circuits. Either way, mineral processing as we know it will change significantly. INTRODUCTION Mineral processing has a long history well covered in a recent publication (Habashi, 2006) who points out “the ancient Egyptians knew already that it would be easier to melt an earth rich in gold particles than another which is poor. As a result, all efforts were made to enrich the gold by washing away the light gangue minerals. Similarly, another ancient method for enriching gold particles from a river stream was by means of fleece, hence the Greek myth of the “golden fleece”. Since the middle ages, striving for improved economics has driven a string of innovative developments in milling and separation. The reader is again referred to the informative and illustrative text by Habashi."

There are discussed the possibilities of using of flotation tailings of platinum-copper-nickel sulfide ores of the Norilsk region for the preparation of backfill mixture instead of a specially produced rock and binder materials to reduce the cost of stowing operations and impact on the environment. It is shown that due to the presence in the tailings of flotation up to 10% of sulfide sulphur, which reduces the strength of the fill materials, and more than 1 g/t PGM it is necessary the preliminary extraction of the sulfides in the product for further processing that give an opportunity to reduce the losses of valuable components. It is shown that by the flotation of the current tailings it is possible to extract 91% of sulfide sulphur, 60% of palladium and 30% platinum in 17% sulfide concentrate containing 2.1 g/t palladium, and to reduce the sulphur content in the tailings up to 0.7%. Due to the easy oxidation of pyrrhotite, there is recommended fractional delivery of the collector with a total consumption 200 g/t. There are discussed results of the flotation study with an additional collector of PGM (sodium diizobutyditiophosfinate), which one show the possibility to increase extraction of platinum on 45%, as well as extraction of sulphur and palladium. For the flotation of sulfides and PGM from the current tailings there is recommended a combination of collectors for primary flotation and only butyl xanthate using in control operations. The possibility of using sludge fraction of the current tailings as a component for the preparation of the combined cementing materials after exposure of sulfides is analyzed. It is shown that the efficiency of the flotation of sulfides from this fraction can be enhanced using selective flocculants. There are discussed the advantages of implementation of completely hydrophobic butadiene-styrene copolymer in comparison with partially hydrophobic polymers. There is discussed an efficiency of the mechanochemical treatment of old tailings in turbo mill and sulphuric acid to remove oxide films from the surface of pyrrhotite before its flotation. Due to the pretreatment operation there is achieved increasing of sulphur extraction and after the introduction to the flotation circuit three control operations there is produced the fill material with sulphur content 2.5%. The Bond and the Hardgrove methods are widely used for the determination of the material?s grindability. Generally, the determination of the Bond work index of inhomogeneous materials can be carried out with high deviation using the conventional apparatuses and methods, because of the highly different grindability of components. This is more significant when the composite cement?s grindability is measured, which highly affects the design and operation of cement grinding mills. A possible solution can be the combined application of the Bond-method with the determination of the component?s weight ratio in the product and perform the Bond measurement until the steady state conditions of grindability coefficient (G) and chemical composition of the components are reached. To prove the applicability of the above mentioned idea systematic Bond and Hardgrove grindability tests were carried out of two phase composite materials. The experimental results showed that the application of the combined procedure is proven in order to have a more accurate and reliable calculation of the Bond work index of composite materials, especially when the components have significant difference in the grindability and concentration. The measurements also showed the possibilities and limits of the grindability test methods.

It is known that the grinding condition has a major effect on the beneficiation characteristics of the minerals in subsequent processing, in particular, flotation. In the flotation process, particles surface and their condition can significantly influence collector adsorption and flotation performance. For example, particle shape and its surface roughness occurred during grinding may influence flotation characteristics of a specific ore. In fact, adsorption of different cationic and anionic species on mineral surfaces can be varied depending on the selected comminution procedure. The flotation performance of sulphide minerals can be detrimentally affected by the surface oxidation. The amount of surface oxidation may reduce the hydrophobicity of the mineral and makes adsorption of collectors less selective. Improved liberation may generally result in improved flotation recovery. However, this may result in finer grinding and slimes, and consequently, reduce the overall flotation recovery. This paper discusses the effect of wet and dry grinding on copper flotation of a complex Cu-Pb-Zn ore. Industrially, wet grinding is preferred due to its higher energy efficiency and owing to downstream processing requirements. In this study, series of flotation tests were conducted,and surface analysis (XPS and ToFSIMS) were performed after wet or dry grinding at two different P80 values. Mineralogical study was also conducted to investigate the liberation of valuable minerals after grinding. A higher copper flotation recovery was found for wet grinding. However, the copper recovery was increased by further grinding in both conditions (wet and dry). The results showed a higher collector adsorption on copper mineral surfaces after wet grinding. The surface analysis also revealed that the ore is slightly more oxidized after dry grinding probably due to higher temperature during dry grinding.
