While direct study of high temperature hydrothermal activity and the associated mineral formation as well as study of their scales are possible in the modern ocean, researchers are deprived of such opportunity for past geologic time. Even in cases where hydrothermal deposits that formed in the geological past are preserved they have been covered by sediments or overlain by lava and have become inaccessible after a time for obser-vation and sampling. Rarely are these buried hydrothermal deposits found during deep-sea drilling or coring operations, and their direct study on an ocean scale is impossible at present. Even within hydrothermal fields, without special preliminary detailed surveys, the probability of intersecting hydrothermal edifices that are covered by sediments becomes a rare event.

Vast mineral resources of copper, zinc, cobalt and gold have been identified off the coast of Papua New Guinea at depths exceeding 2,000 meters. Accessing them in a cost effective manner and without destroying the marine habitat requires overcoming numerous technical and operational challenges. Although there are a number of deep-sea mining operations underway worldwide, the depths encountered are significantly less than will be required to mine these ore deposits. To date, only the oil industry has developed technologies for successfully accessing reserves at depths of 3,000m.

Hydrogenetic Fe-Mn crusts are ubiquitous in the ocean basins and play an important role in marine mineral-deposit research because of their widespread occurrence and high concentrations of valuable and rare metals. Directed research, which started in the last quarter of the 20th century, has provided significant results, with substantial amounts of data produced on Fe-Mn crusts structure, composition, and distribution in the global ocean. Detailed study of several seamounts has given confidence about the scale of Fe-Mn crust development and their characteristics. Now, commercial interests gain more and more attention. However, at the same time some theoretical questions related to Fe-Mn crust history including controls on metal sources and concentrations have not yet been answered. Here, we present the overview of age, composition, distribution, and geological setting of hydrogenetic Fe-Mn crusts from Pacific and Atlantic seamounts and discuss the geological evolution and conditions that led to the formation of potentially economic concentrations of metals. The age, composition, and distribution of Fe-Mn crusts in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans were determined by using a Fe-Mn deposits database compiled from our original data, published papers, published databases, and other international sources. Comparative analysis of Fe-Mn deposits from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans shows that there are similarities in basic characteristics of crust formation in both oceans. Simultaneously, there are significant differences in the scale of Fe-Mn crust distribution and composition that can be explained by differences in geological settings and characteristics of the deposition environment.

It is well known that significant quantities of mineral deposits exist in the oceans. Most of these resources cannot yet be classified as economic "reserves" in the strict sense of the term, but they serve as backstops to deposits of identical minerals produced onshore. The prospects for the commercialization of ocean mineral resources will depend upon factors affecting both supply and demand, including, among other things, changes in consumption patterns, technological developments, new discoveries, developments in markets for complements and substitutes, and environmental regulation. In this presentation, we examine broad trends in mineral prices, as one of the most summary measures of the prospects for the commercialization of ocean minerals. Further, we report on any recent developments in the relevant product markets that may affect the potential for commercialization.

Nautilus Minerals is exploring for high-grade gold, silver, copper, and zinc-rich submarine massive sulphide deposits (SMS) within the territorial waters of the sovereign state of Papua New Guinea. Work to date has shown that these systems contain spectacularly high metal grades. To date a total of 88 surface sulphide grab samples have been collected from Nautilus’ Solwara 1 Prospect within EL 1196 in the Manus Basin, returning average grades of 15.5 g/t gold, 191g/t silver, 10.8% copper, and 4.7% Zn. Drilling in January/February 2006 confirmed the presence of this high grade system, with sulphide intersections up to 19m below the sea floor, with a best intersection of 11.6m at 9.1 g/t Au and 13.1% Cu.

Every year approximately 22 million tonnes of marine sand and gravel are dredged form British waters. The eastern English Channel (EEC) contains substantial reserves, a proportion of which have been identified by the aggregates industry for potential future exploitation. The main aim of this study is to produce broadscale marine habitat maps of the EEC area. The UK aggregates industry has formed a consortium of representatives (the eastern English Channel Association), and have sponsored an initial baseline survey and follow-up sampling programmes as part of a Regional Environmental Assessment (REA) covering a patchwork of aggregate prospecting areas. To complement this effort, a large-scale geophysical survey was conducted in 2005 to place the REA in a wider spatial context and, thereby, to help assess the environmental significance of any future impacts arising from commercial aggregate extraction over the broader region of the EEC.

Recent studies estimate the depletion mid-point (dmp) for conventional natural gas to be reached around year 2022, and for conventional oil to be reached around year 2017. These numbers are based on simplified assumptions of unchanged demand and do not include increasing reserves from discovery of new fields and also do not include a shifting of resources to reserves e.g. due to an increasing oil price (Gerling et al., 2005). Anyhow, these prospects require conventional hydrocarbons to be substituted in the near future.

Fisheries make a significant regional contribution to the economy of Canada. In the Atlantic Region, over 70 thousand workers depend on the primary or secondary fishing industry. Fisheries are vulnerable to pre-emption of space by other marine industries and to contamination by chemical discharges. Markets may be affected even by the threat that products may be tainted. Fish may be killed by drags and dredges, and their physiology and behaviour affected by suspended sediments are stirred up by mechanical devices. Virtually no evidence exists of adverse impacts £ran ocean mining on fisheries, but projections from other marine activities such as fishing itself, dredging and other marine discharges give reason for caution. Department of Fisheries and Oceans policy calls for review of ocean mining proposals to ensure adequate protection of fish stocks, fishing activities and fish habitat, and compensation for losses attributable to any industrial project. Adverse impacts can be minimized by careful attention to details of location, technology and timing, and to close co-operation and information exchange between industry and the regulatory agencies.

Diamond production from the reworked beach and river channel gravels along the west coasts of South Africa and Namibia is well known throughout the world, not only for the exceptional quality of the diamonds, but also for the sheer scope of the operations. To date an estimated 140 million carats have been produced from the resource worth some US$40 billion in today's money terms. It is therefore not surprising that it didn't take long before the attention turned towards the possible extension of this valuable diamond resource on similar submerged beaches in the adjacent territorial waters of South Africa and Namibia. This has proved to be a very successful move as the marine production in Namibia today constitutes 48% of that country's total diamond production. Although small scale recovery of diamonds from the sea commenced in the 1950's, the first large scale production came from the operations of the Texan entrepreneur, Sam Collins, in the 1960's. The De Beers Group, which took over Sam Collin's operations in 1969 had all the concession areas, as well as the financial and human resources to tackle the new mining frontier in the correct way by years of data gathering (ie diamond reserves and seafloor terrain studies) before commencing with large scale mining operations in the 1980's. Those who are familiar with the beach mining operations along the South African and Namibian west coasts will have appreciation for the daunting task of surgically removing the payable portion of diamond deposits from the non-payable material on the one hand, and the complex uneven fractured and gullied bed-rock floor of the deposits on the other hand. Not to mention the additional complexities of large boulders and hard calcretised diamond gravel layers (conglomerate) which are sometimes associated with the deposits. It was a natural development that the sea diamond mining operations were approached with the known information of the land operations, attempting to duplicate land mining operations in the sea, but taking cognisance of the variations of the terrain in the different areas. The research affiliate projects of the Continental Shelf Division of the Marine Minerals Technology Center concentrate on the development of technologies and methodologies for the exploration 4 and assessment of nonfuel continental shelf mineral resources within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone. Three of the FY 1990-91 research grants are summarized below. Scientists at the Center for Applied Isotope Studies at the University of Georgia have developed ?An Advanced Design for a Seafloor Gamma Isotope Mapping System? for the rapid collection of data on seafloor sediments. This system is designed to detect gamma radiation emitted by naturally occurring radioactive elements found in marine sediments. This data can be used to study seafloor lithology and has direct application in marine mineral surveys. The purpose of this study has been to redesign and calibrate the system for marine mineral survey work. Recent modifications of the sled design, gamma radiation detector, and supporting software have resulted in considerable improvements in sensitivity, functional operation, and data acquisition.

Much advance has been made in offshore hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation in India. But the same amount of success could not be achieved in the case of other offshore minerals which are amenable for mining. However, employing present technology, there should not be any difficulty in successful exploitation with minimum environmental hazards. A demonstration is provided by considering the conditions prevailing in the Kerala offshore (southwest coast of India) scenario of monazite, ilmenite, phosphatic mud and calcareous deposits. Mud banks are unique phenomenon of the Kerala coast during monsoon season. Acting as barriers to waves, mud banks protect portions of the beaches from being eroded and trap sediments from either side facilitating growth of adjacent beach. The easy minable possibilities of the phosphatic mud during non-monsoon season with less pollution hazards and dumping back the waste material after processing for phosphate at the breaker zones to reduce the erosional effects on the coast make the exploitation economic and ecofriendly unlike the benefication of the lowgrade phosphate ores on land on a comparatively larger area and subsequent crushing, transport and resulting pollution.

During the last ten years seven applications for nodule-bearing areas of the World Ocean Floor International Region (IR) have been made by national companies of Russia (Yuzhmorgeologiya), France (IFREMER/AFERNOD), Japan (DORD), India (The State Department of Sea Resources Development), China (COMRA), Korea (KORDI) and the Interokeanmetal Joint Organization (IOM) of some East European countries and have been registered by the Preparatory Commission of the United Nations International Seabed Authority (ISA). Besides these groups registered within Resolution 11 of the Final Act of the III United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea there are four international consortia registered in the USA [Kennecott (KCON), Ocean Mining Associates (DMA), Ocean Management Incorporated (OMI), and Ocean Minerals Company (OMCO)], which have interest in areas in the IR and can be considered as potential applicants. All registered areas (with the exception of the Indian Ocean) including the areas of potential applicants and also 6 areas, reserved for the ISA are located in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the Pacific Ocean. If within each area not less than one deposit of polymetallic nodule-bearing ores can be discovered, then, the total number of such deposits, for the present moment, is 20.

The paper concerns with some questions of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) control system design, which allows a motion at rough undersea terrain. The AUV advantages reveal itself completely during exploration of such objects as seamounts and reefs area. These objects are characterized by steep slopes (30 degrees and above) and chaotic situated obstacles (rock debris, pinnacles, escarpments). Uses of other technical facilities for operating in such formations are difficult, dangerous or impossible. These regions take an interest due to the presence of iron-manganese crusts. Modern AUV can estimate density of mineral by means of still camera or video recorder. For this reason the vehicle has to move with the distance of 3-5 meters from seabed. Under such conditions micro- and mesorelief presents a considerable danger for AUV. The AUV can bypass underwater obstacles in the various ways. However, in any case AUV motion will be characterized by intensive maneuvering on various speeds (from 0 up to 1.5 m/s), circular change of tractive force vector and, hence, a circular flow about the hull. So, AUV is equipped with the propulsion system, which provides free modes of motion.

The reconstruction of ocean history has been a major focus of marine research over the past decade. A significant outcome of these investigations is the recognition that certain types of marine mineral deposits are linked to regional to global scale changes in ocean composition and climate conditions. Manganese-bearing deposits are of particular interest in this regard because changes in their occurrence, distribution and/or composition are responsive to both biochemical and geological factors. Analyses of such deposits whose formation spans critical age/epoch boundaries thus provide clues concerning the interplay of different process during anomalous periods in Earth history. Recent studies demonstrating this deposit - event - process relationship include: (1) Changes in the bulk chemical composition of ferromanganese crusts during the Late Miocene-Early-Pliocene (-7-3 Ma) that coincide with a period of enhanced biological productivity in the eastern equatorial Pacific upwelling zone; (2) The formation of large statiform manganese deposits at the Cenornanian- Turonian Boundary (-92 Ma) in association with widespread oceanic anoxia; and (3) Increased deposition of hydrothermal precipitates caused by tectonic reorganizations at the Paleocene - Eocene boundary (-55 Ma) that resulted in global-scale changes in atmospheric and oceanic circulation and climate.

Are hydrothermal emissions from subduction-related volcanic arcs important to the total hydrothermal burden of the oceans? While historical observations of hydrothermal venting of fluids at mid-ocean ridgecrests, intra-plate hotspots, and backarc spreading centers are numerous, we remain poorly informed regarding the contributions from hydrothermal systems associated with oceanic submarine arcs. Here we report the chemical results from the first systematic assessment for hydrothermal activity at an intra-oceanic arc front. We discovered that 7 of the 13 submarine volcanoes that define a 260-km-long segment of the southern Kermadec arc north of New Zealand are hydrothermally active. Most significant here is that the chemical compositions of the various hydrothermal systems, inferred from back-extrapolation of observations of hydrothermal plumes, are diverse, and in many instances enriched in the concentrations of gases (e.g., CO2 and H2S) and metals (e.g., Fe and Mn) compared to effluents commonly discharged from mid-ocean ridges. If our results are generally representative of submarine arcs, whose global extent may equal one-third that of ridgecrests, the answer to our leading question could be a resounding yes in terms of both volume and chemical composition.

The Federal government has a lengthy history in supporting and conducting research in the ocean mining and minerals field. The Federal effort has been and is currently focused primarily in four agencies: the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) within the Department of Commerce, and the Geological Survey (USGS), the Bureau of Mines (BuMines), and more recently the Minerals Management Service (MMS) within the Department of the Interior. While NOAA and the USGS have played dominant roles in mapping and geologic studies, and the MMS has recently provided funding for several task force studies within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) , the Bureau of Mines has conducted research in mining technology, minerals processing, resource definition, and economic evaluation of minerals from the seabed for over 20 years. These studies have yielded considerable minerals information regarding manganese nodules and crusts, placers, mineral sands, phosphorites, and sulfides. This paper reviews the past achievements in ocean mining and minerals programs starting in the late 1960's, describes current research and information efforts, and presents an outlook for Bureau of Mines research and information gathering efforts. Recent offshore diamond exploration has been concentrated in the SW Joseph Bonaparte Gulf. I`IW Australia. Extensive high resolution seismic and sampling surveys have been carried out in Cambridge Gulf, offshore of the mouth of the OR River and other rivers of the region. Surface-tow boomer surveys have been correlated with sampling data from vibracores and a wide diameter (1m) airlift system, providing a geological framework for the area. Although large-scale bulk sampling has not been undertaken, there has been no reported recovery of diamonds since 1993. The geology and prospectivity of a range of potential diamond traps in high energy, fluvial and transgressive depositional settings has been assessed. Potentially diamondiferous targets include (i) a shoreline apron. (ii) fluvial/estuarine channel infills and terraces and (iii) ravinement surfaces.. Although there is evidence for a long history of fluvial development and sea level changes, the majority of the investigated traps represent the result of erosion and sedimentation during and following the last interglacial. Significant volumes of unconsolidated gravels and coarse-grained sands with occasional indurated layers are present, and are locally exposed at sea beet In place s thick successions (>5m) of fine-grained overburden overlie the coarse-grained sediments.

Earlier reconnaissance geological survey and recent mineral exploration by the Geological Survey of Japan (now part of AIST), Metal Mining Agency of Japan (now part of JOGMEC) have revealed that hydrogenetic ferromanganese crusts are widespread over rock outcrops of the floor of the NW Pacific Ocean, south and east of the Japanese Islands, despite vigorous tectonic activity, such as subduction and backarc spreading. Deposition of ferromanganese oxides has occurred since at least the mid-Paleogene over the Philippine Sea Plate region and nearby.

A geologist can be likened to a medical pathologist trying to figure out from faint clues how something had lived and how it died, often long after the event. Present-day seafloor hydrothermalism has empowered geologists/pathologists to dissect a living system, in this case volcanogenic massive sulfides (vms) deposits of copper, zinc, lead, silver and gold. On the other hand, a considerable amount of our understanding of seafloor hydrothermal processes and its products stem from our knowledge, much of it from industry, of these same processes and products that formed ancient ores in oceans as much as 2700 million years ago and are now mined on land.
