The year 1987 marked the centennial of the beginning of modern hydrometallurgy. On October 19, 1887 British Patent No. 14174 entitled Process of Obtaining Gold and Silver from Ores was issued*. The discovery was made by John Steward MacArthur (Fig. 1), a chemist-metallurgist, supported and assisted by Robert and William Forrest, two brothers practicing medicine in Glasgow. The discovery was made in the basement of their clinic. The process, which became known as the cyanidation process in reference to the alkali cyanide reagent used, immediately received industrial success in New Zealand in 1889 and in South Africa in 1890t. It displaced the chlorination method which had been in use. In 1903 MacArthur was awarded the first Medal of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy in London1131 - The cyanidation process was responsible for the doubling of gold production in the world in the two decades which followed its first application (Fig. 2). To the modern metallurgist, it may be surprising to think of MacArthur coming across an obscure reagent such as an alkali cyanide as a leaching agent for gold ores. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the background and the factors that led to this invention, the development of the understanding of the process, and the application of modern technology.

Hydraulic fracturing and hydraulic shearing techniques are essential for the development of unconventional oil & gas and geothermal resources. Such techniques will also play a key role in the development of CO2 sequestration, and management of high stresses encountered with deep mining. However, the optimal design of hydraulic injections is often limited by continuum treatments of the rock mass without consideration of the influence of the natural fractures present. These may interact with the hydraulic fracture to promote offsets or arrest, or may cause the natural fractures to undergo shear and dilation. Given the limited access to the rock afforded by deep boreholes common to oil & gas and geothermal projects, advanced numerical modeling is critical for understanding key mechanisms and interactions. In this work, we first present a coupled hydromechanical distinct-element model focusing on the propagation of a hydraulic fracture. Normal and shear displacements arising from the generated hydraulic fractures are subsequently integrated into a fracture flow model for detailed analysis of specific flow behaviour and fracture permeability. For this, a scanned 3-D profile of a natural fracture is used to correlate surface roughness to dilation as a function of shearing. Fracture flow is computed at different time steps corresponding to different fracture propagation states and geometries. Modeling results indicate that the opening of a tensile hydraulic fracture is accompanied by millimetre-scale shear displacements associated with slip and wedging between adjacent blocks. This may leads to a mismatch between the upper and lower walls of the fracture if asperities are irregular and strong enough. However, fluid-induced tensile fractures have low Joint Roughness Coefficients (JRC), and associated millimetre-scale shear displacements are too small to ensure a significant offset of asperities that prevent a fully-elastic closure when the hydraulic fracture is depressurized. Injection of proppant is thus critical to keeping hydraulic fracture apertures open. Future work is planned that will see the models calibrated against field data including microseismic event locations, magnitudes and source mechanisms, tiltmeter deformations, stress change, and pore pressures.

The Quality index is a useful tool allowing to assess the metallurgical quality of aluminium AlSiMg foundry alloys (A356/357). Its value is calculated from the ultimate tensile strength and elongation; it increases with the metallurgical quality of the casting, i.e. with finer dendrites, lower microporosity and inclusion count and lower iron content. This Quality index does not depend on the degree of temper applied during the heat treatment (aging time and temperature). After defining the Quality index, it will be explained how it can be predicted from the knowledge of the local solidification conditions obtained from modelling. The paper will then present four case studies of castings for which the prediction of the Quality index by modelling was made. These case studies from different authors will involve the three most common casting processes used for producing high integrity aluminium castings, namely: sand casting, permanent mould casting and investment casting (lost wax). In all cases, the accuracy of the prediction will be assessed by comparing the predicted Quality index distributions to the experimental values based on the published measured values of the local tensile properties.

"The combination of A C induction motor and flu id coupling, of either the fixed or variable filling type, constitutes a simple, low cost, highly reliable drive unit, with many applications in the mining field.The paper will, however, concentrate on the variable filling fluid coupling in three principal applications-conveyor starting, infinitely variable speed control for slurry and slimes pumping and dewatering pumps for deep mines. Fluid couplings can be used with standard or custom-built control gear equipment, ranging from the most simple, time-based open loop types, to those having the latest microprocessor techniques.IntroductionThe first industrial applications of fluid couplings included their use in the mining field as hydraulic slip regulators for flywheel generating sets. These installations, usually rated at around 1700 to 2500 hp, were located at mine shafts where the electrical grid transmission lines were not strong enough to cater for the peak power demands of the cage winding cycle. In Canada, the first two significant examples of variable filling fluid couplings for mining were on conveyor drives, at Steep Rock Mines Limited, closely followed by the major iron ore handling term inal on the St. Lawrence River at Sept-Iles. Successful and reliable operat ion of the fluid couplings at these two sites set the pattern for use on many subsequent mining projects throughout the Canadian Continent."

Aircraft utilization, weather and cost data are given for three separate projects north of the sixtieth parallel in the Northwest Territories and the Yukon Territory. These operations, carried out by helicopter-equipped geological and prospecting parties, have cost $24 to $30 per square mile, depending principally on the distance from the base. They provide adequate surface exploration of areas with 40 to 50 per cent rock outcrop. A good one-inch-to-one-mile geological map can be made. T HE exploration of the Canadian northland has been given increasing attention by the mining industry during recent years. In many cases, the initial problem is to make an adequate reconnaissance of a large area where existing geological information is meagre. The Geological Survey of Canada pioneered the use of helicopter-equipped geological parties for mapping at a scale of eight miles to the inch.

C URRENT practice in the zinc concentrate roasting plant of The Consolidated Mining arid Smelting Company of Canada Limited, at Trail, B.C., involves passing the furnace effluent gases through an electrostatic precipitator for the recovery of dust. After removal of the dust the gas is treated for recovery of sulphur dioxide by conversion into sulphuric acid ( 1). However. as roasting techniques improved, and furnace productivity in-creased, the rated capacity of the precipitator was exceeded and it was necessary to consider various means of improving the dust recovery. A study of methods indicated that a baghouse using silicone-treated glass fabric, might be suitable for this particular application. Glass fabric was chosen because the temperature of the roaster effluent gases would range from 450°F to 500°F and tempering air was undesirable to avoid dilution of the sulphur dioxide gas.

The development of an underground repository for the storage of spent nuclear fuel relies on a multi-barrier system to isolate the used fuel from the environment – ultimately, the biosphere. These barriers include engineered copper and steal canisters, dense bentonite, and the natural rock as well. In order to reduce the potential flow pathway along the excavation induced damage zone, various slots perpendicular to the excavation axis have been proposed. These slots are called cut-off seals and generally are filled with bentonite as it has high swelling potential and very low permeability. Many different geometries have been proposed, but clear guidelines on the selection of the optimum geometry have yet to be developed. In order to assess the optimum geometry, three shapes have been selected for this numerical study, including a trapezoid, a triangle, and a thin rectangular slot. The cut-offs were modelled for a conceptual shaft constructed in the Queenston Formation from Ontario over a stress to strength ratio that has been found at many underground research laboratories. It was found that the excavation of a triangular and thin slot cut-off had the smallest increase in the damage as quantified based on the extensile volumetric strain within the plastic yield zone. Both shapes showed an increase in the damaged zone by 13 cm at a stress to strength ratio of 2.75. The trapezoidal cut-off damage zone increased by 20 cm at the same stress to strength ratio. Further study is required to better define the optimum cut-off shape for wider variety of conditions and other geological formations.

"A comprehensive geotechnical characterization has been undertaken at the El Teniente mine to describe and determine the rock mass behaviour strength properties of the primary copper ore. The Synthetic Rock Mass (SRM) modelling approach is used to simulate the mechanical behaviour of this heavily and unfractured rock mass. The micro-parameters of the model have been calibrated against mechanical properties and scaling laws for intact rock and veins, in order to represent virtual samples of four different geotechnical units. Results can be used to predict the rock mass scale effects, anisotropy, and brittleness properties that cannot be obtained using empirical methods.INTRODUCTIONThe primary copper ore at the El Teniente mine is described as very competent and massive, given that it exhibits a brittle behaviour (Rojas, Cavieres, Dunlop, & Gaete, 2000). This description is coherent with the geological description of the rock mass, which does not have discontinuities match as the definition provided by International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM, 1981). Only faults can be classified as discontinuities, but they are widely spaced. The primary copper ore has a high frequency of veins, where the cooper mineralization is hosted, these vein network structures are known as stockwork. Soft veins containing weak minerals as infill (chalcopyrite and anhydrite) control the disassembling of the rock mass during caving (Brzovic & Villaescusa, 2007).Presently, there are mainly two traditional methods used to estimate the strength of the rock mass: 1) determination of the strength envelope of the rock mass using scaling parameters from laboratory tests and 2) using numerical modelling based on back analysis of previous experiences of failure observed and measured in mining or civil excavations. The primary copper ore of El Teniente mine has no fractures; therefore, it is difficult to determine a rating that would enable to scale laboratory data, such as, RMR (Laubscher, 1977) or GSI (Hoek, 1994). This is the reason why the first option is not valid unless the entry data is manipulated or adjusted in order to obtain reasonable results. The second option requires, in general, a good characterization of a previous failure event in the rock mass, which is not always available. In recent years, new techniques of numerical modeling have been developed (PFC3D, ELFEN, Abaqus). Those methodologies are the third way to estimate the strength of the rock mass, but they are still in development. Particularly, the concept of SRM developed by Itasca is implemented in this study (Pierce, Mas Ivars, Cundall, & Potyondy, 2007; Mas Ivars et al., 2011), aiming to capture the real behaviour of the rock mass."

The new 30 MVA slag cleaning furnace at Waterval Smelter, Rustenburg Platinum, South Africa, has been in operation since 10 March 2003. The furnace design and operation face a number of challenges including a wide variety of feed materials and resulting bath conditions. Furnace feed varies in combinations of granulated Waterval Ausmelt Converter Slag (WACS), hot fed Peirce-Smith converter slag, concentrate and reverts. Coke is added as reductant. The resulting slag composition varies considerably and regularly. For the case feeding WACS an almost pure fayalitic slag (60%+ FeO, 30%+ SiO2) with a very low viscosity results. Due to the widely varying slag conditions, including a superheated fayalitic slag with high fluidity, a robust sidewall design is required adjacent to the slag bath. For this reason the furnace sidewall is equipped with Pyromet's MAXICOOL® high intensity copper cooling system. The design and installation of the copper coolers as well as tap holes are discussed. To cope with the variation in bath conditions and high slag superheat (350°C when tapped at 1650°C), the copper coolers are capable of removing peak sidewall heat fluxes above 500 kW/m2. Feedback is included on the performance of the Pyromet MAXICOO® copper cooling system for the first two years of operation. The paper further includes an overview on the design and performance of the tap holes, furnace shell, furnace roof and copper slag spouts.

The fully mechanized top coal caving mining method has been the main mining approach for thick coal seams with high output and efficiency in Chinese coal mines. The gateroads for the top coal caving mining faces should be driven along the floor of the thick coal seam with a part of the seam as roof. The support of the gateroads is commonly difficult because of the low strength and broken structures of the coal seams, and the increasingly large section of gateroads meeting the need of greater and greater face coal output. Based on the analyses on the geomechanics properties and production conditions of the top coal caving mining, the influences of the top coal caving mining parameters on the stability of gateroads, including mining thickness and face length, are studied. The deformation and damage features of the rock mass surrounding the gateroads with the top coal seam as roof are investigated, the interaction of the support with the surrounding rock mass, the support theory are studied. The bolting design method and criteria, bolting forms and parameters for the gateroads with the top coal as roof are put forward. The rock bolting components, including bolt bars, face plates, cable tendons, meshes, and steel straps, are introduced. Finally, the gateroad bolting effects are evaluated through a typical case study on the basis of field monitoring data, such as the displacement of surrounding rock mass and the forces along bolts and cables.

"The correlation obtained by plotting pH of maximum adsorption of dextrin versus the isoelectric point of involved metal hydroxides can be used to predict the depressing effect of dextrin on flotation in ""pure"" sulfide mineral systems. Sulfides are strongly depressed by dextrin whenever their surfaces are coated by the corresponding metal hydroxide. The efficiency of dextrin as a depressant is affected by the adsorption of the sulfhydryl collector. Hydrolyzable cations modify this relationship in flotation of sulfide ores. This type of deviation of the real-life systems from the predictions based on the behavior of the pure systems shows the possible ways that could be followed to further improve the obtained correlations. Petrographic, chemical and isotopic compo itions of auriferous and non-auriferous quartz vei ns from the Sta r Lake and Flin Flin-Amisk Lake areas of northern Saskatchewan indicate diver e origins fo r the fluids associated with gold mineralization. In the Sta r Lake area, the metavolcanic , Star Lake pl uton, and heared mafic dikes have retained their original igneous 81 80 values. The 81 80 value of quartz from mi neralized veins vary by I per mi! and range from+I0 to+IJ. The only quartz ample having a 81 80 value outside th is range came from a vein not associated wi th a dike or gold mineralization . Quartz from the Star Lake pluton has identical 8180 value to the qua rtz from mi neralized vei ns which suggests that the vei ns and the pluton are related to imilar proces es. The diffe rence in 81 80 values between mi neralized and barren vein may erve a a potential exploration tool in this area. Because o34S val ues of a limi ted number of amples of pyrite from gold-bearing quartz vei ns at Star Lake correlate directly with gold content. the gold may have been syngenetic with the su lphur and the 834 value may be useful for exploration . 8180 values of co-existing quartz, calcite, and amphibole in the veins from Star Lake indicate that isotopic disequilibrium among the minerals is common, but the val ues also record a high temperature of formation (ea . 500°C) involvi ng a component of magmatic fl uid. TheoD value of hydrou mineral from Star Lake retain their original igneous values but whole rock values are generally much lower, an effect attributed to interaction of the minerals with a late meteoric water. In the Fl in Flin-Amisk Lake area, auriferou and barren quartz veins formed from a mixture of hydrothermal and metamorph ic flu id at lower temperatures (ea . 350°C) than those at Sta r Lake. Becau e there i no apparent correlation between 8180 values of the quartz with gold content or relative age of the vein , nor between the 834S val ues of pyrite and gold content, table isotopes appear limited as an exploration tool in the Fl in FlonAmisk Lake areas.

This paper offers a brief review of current literature pertaining to vacuum degassing or vacuum casting of steel as practiced in the U.S.A., Germany and the U.S.S.R. The advantages of vacuum degassing of large forging ingots, heavy section casting, for the conversion of rimming bessemer steels to killed steel and for the production of transformer steels are discussed. Operating pressures, reduction in gas contents and improvements in hydrogen segregation, steel cleanliness and mechanical properties, obtained with the various techniques, are described. The paper includes a description of an experimental vacuum stream-droplet degassing unit and some preliminary results obtained at the Physical Metallurgy Division Research Laboratories Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa on laboratory steel melts. "The topic of this study is the design of flexible fences to mitigate the risk due to debris flow phenomena by means of theoretical and experimental studies analysed in framework of the Rock Engineering System (RES).The study of the interaction between debris flows and flexible barriers is a major challenge since many different aspects concerning both the slope characteristics and the structure features are involved. Debris flows are often triggered by the mobilization of debris deposits that are generated by rock fall of adjacent rock walls. The rock debris deposits are difficult to be characterized by the physical and mechanical point of view due to their large variability in volume distribution and, moreover, when dealing with high mountains environment, they are also strongly affected by the presence of water at different phases (solid or liquid) depending on the temperature. The debris deposit turns unstable in relation with the geotechnical and environmental features of the areas and the instability evolution in high mountain steep valley is often a debris flow. Debris flow destructive potential is very high and protections are often needed to reduce the debris flow risk.This complexity determines the needs of comprehensive study able to include the global basin dynamic and the environmental conditions. An a-priori analysis of the influence of the different aspects can be useful to focus on the real driving aspects of the problem. Due to the complexity of the system the application of the RES methodology is recommended in order to clearly define the different assumptions needed, their influence on the simulations and a comparison among them.RES allows investigating triggering criteria, flow and depositional processes and interaction of flows with protection fences in a rational way. For this purpose, an interaction matrix is created: it summarizes the key geotechnical parameters that influence debris flows, their interactions and debris/engineering protection opera behaviour. The goal is to quantify the diagonal-off terms to assess the residual risk after barrier construction, using back analysis from real debris flow event and data collection from literature.This methodology is applied to analyze a debris flow event in the Italian Western Alps where numerical analyses are carried on to assess flow characteristics to be used for fence design through the application of an analytical and numerical model developed by the authors (Brighenti et al, 2013). In particular, the velocity and deposition heights have been estimated using the numerical code RASH3D (Pirulli, 2010), which is a single-phase model based on depth-averaged Saint Venant equations. Pathways of different lengths are studied to assess the input data necessary to design the protection barrier and to determine the associated risk. Simulation of the barrier at different places along the valley will also allow to determine optimal barrier location in terms of minimum residual risks by comparing the velocity, the volume and the energy of the debris after the barrier impact.The work will produce a possible design scheme to be adopted in this environment."

In response to requests from its stakeholders, the International Standards Organisation is engaged in development of an international standard for Energy Management Systems (EnMS) which will become "ISO 50001". This new standard will build on the successes of both the EN16001 EnMS standard that has been used by dozens of European companies, as well as the ANSI/MSE 2000:2008 EnMS standard that is currently being used in several pilot projects in the USA and Ontario. This paper provides an overview of the key points of the EnMS standards, and describes how they can be used to drive sustainable energy reductions in the metallurgy industry.

In the last decades, the Chilean copper mining and metallurgical industry have had to modify their technological processes to meet the environmental regulations implemented by the Chilean government, and also to support the pressure of the public opinion. Thus, air quality standards for sulfur dioxide and particulate matter (primary and secondary), plans for reducing emission of arsenic by the Chilean copper smelters, effluents discharge limits, among others regulations were applied by the environmental agency. Additionally, agreements on cleaner production were carried out by mining sector and government. Now, a draft law on mine closure, and another on environmental mining wastes (abandoned mines) are being discussed by the authorities and the mining sector. In the context, production and environmental impacts in different ways to produce copper in the Chilean mining industry are reviewed and regulatory tendencies as well as abatement technologies today used are exposed and discussed in this presentation. Pyro, hydro and electrometallurgical processes employed and their current effluent and contaminants are presented showing various alternatives of treatment in the copper industry. An update of regulations established in Chile vis a vis copper production, with an especial attention to mine closure are also presented.

HISTORY AND LOCATION SEAL HARBOR GOLD MINES, LIMITED, was incorporated in January, 1934, to take over 116 acres of mining lands in the Stormont gold district, Guysboro county, Nova Scotia. The nearby ten-stamp Mulgrave mill was also purchased, and since that time 974 acres of adjoining properties have been secured from the Government by direct lease. The property is served by a motor road and is about two miles from the village of Goldboro, situated on the shore of Isaac's harbour. The bulk of ?the supplies are brought in by coastal steamer from Halifax, a distance of about 100 miles, since the nearest railway connections are at Antigonish, some 40 miles distant. EARLYY WORK The Seal Harbor properties include the old Partington and Beaver Hat mines. A small tonnage of ore was mined from each and treated on the properties in stamp mills, which were later torn. down . A survey of old records shows that this ore averaged about $8.00 gold per ton. Development work by the present Company was confined to the 100-foot level until February, 1935, but after that rime the incline shaft was deepened to 425 feet and the 300-foot level was explored east and west of the shaft. Six belts of ore were intersected to the west of the shaft. The ore from these belts was hand sorted and the ore portion was put through the 10-stamp Mulgrave mill to defray operating expenses and to serve as a sample of the deposits. The average recovery per ton from this sorted ore was $6.10. Samples of the ore were sent to the testing laboratories of the Mines Branch, at Ottawa, and of Canadian Industries, Limited, at Toronto. Recommendations from both of these authorities were for removal of the coarse gold by concentration and barrel amalgamation, followed by cyanidation of the residue.

"In 2017, Nutrien Allan Potash remediated a portion of the concrete liner in the production shaft. A set of underslung work platforms and collection boxes were used in conjunction with hydraulic splitters, jackleg drills and hand chippers to excavate and remove the broken concrete. New concrete was placed with the original pressure relief design, using a shaft slip form. Shortly after excavating, it was found that the estimated breaking rate and amount of original concrete in-situ was under estimated. Fifteen feet of excavated concrete (2719cu.ft) and ten feet (of replaced concrete was completed on April 28, 2017, and operation of the production shaft was returned to mine operations. During February 2019, Nutrien Allan Potash began remediation of a portion of the concrete liner in the service shaft. The project is different than the 2017 project, as the remediation has occurred during normal running operations and occurred only on night shift. Rather than hydraulic splitters and hand chippers, the new method includes a concrete saw and mechanical excavator from a working platform. The selected method is based on the lessons learned from the 2017 project in the production shaft. The service shaft project was scheduled to be completed in July, 2019. INTRODUCTION Nutrien Allan Potash is located approximated 75 km east of the city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. There are currently two shafts at Nutrien Allan Potash: the Production Shaft and the Service Shaft, transporting people and material from surface to a depth of 3,335 ft. The Production Shaft was completed in 1967, with one section of grey cast iron tubbing installed in the Blairmore formation between the 1605 and 2037 ft Levels. A second set of cast iron tubbing was installed in the Duperow formation between 2203 and 2463 ft Levels in 1999. The remainder of the concrete as of todays standards is designed as a pressure relief liner. The Service Shaft was completed in 1968, with one section of grey cast iron tubbing installed in the Blairmore formation between the 1600 and 2048 ft Levels. A second set of cast iron tubbing was installed in 1981, with 169 ft installed through the Duperow formation. The remainder of the concrete as of todays standards is designed as a pressure relief liner. PRODUCTION SHAFT REMEDIATION During the second quarter of 2015, the Mine Engineering team were notified of an area of concern in the production shaft. The shaft specialists of Golder Associates Ltd (Golder, formerly Alan Auld Canada) were contacted to complete an inspection of the production shaft liner with emphasis on the area of concern. Based on the inspection and documentation review, it was determined that the concrete at the 2804 foot elevation had been broken out for some time and was retained with #8 rebar bolts with resin encapsulation. The broken concrete was encroaching on the clearance to the conveyance."

LEAD poisoning is perhaps the oldest and, until recent years, the most misunderstood of all industrial diseases. Hippocrates appears to have recognized a relationship in the colic experienced by a patient who worked with metals, and the ancient literature is filled with references to the colics and 'dry bellyaches'. The colic and other sequalæ following drinking of lead-bearing waters and, particularly, wines has excited possibly more comment in the older medical literature than any other ætological factor. It was not until1656, when Stockhusen definitely connected the colic of the workmen with the fumes given off in the process, that the true danger to those working with lead was recognized. Unfortunately, something over 200 years elapsed before industry took any note of Stockhusen's discovery; it remained for Legge and Goodly and investigators of the early 1900's to forcibly educate their profession and industry to the manner in which lead gained entrance to the body. The work of Legge and Goodly was published in 1912 and the clearness with which these investigators presented the scientific data which they had accumulated will mark this volume as perhaps the first and most important contribution to our modern knowledge of the subject. It also ushered in a period when, in the short space of thirty years, lead poisoning has been reduced from one of the most baffiing and widespread o industrial diseases to one which can be anticipated and controlled. The next great contribution came in 1926 with the publication of the work of the Harvard group. Here, for the first time, was the physiological behaviour of lead laid bare, and it is to the discoveries of these authors that we owe our modern treatment of lead poisoning.

"Refractory sulfidic ores consist of materials in which gold occurs finely disseminated within metallic sulfides or forming solid solutions, with pyrite and arsenopyrite being the two sulfides most commonly associated with gold. Typical cyanide operations show poor performance and require oxidative pretreatments to increase gold recovery. Pretreatment alternatives include roasting, pre-aeration, acidic and alkaline high pressure oxidation, and bacterial oxidation. The presence of arsenic, however, introduces a serious disadvantage to the use of roasting and bacterial leaching, while high pressure oxidation involves high capital costs. This work focuses on evaluating the effect of the addition of a carbon resin as a sulfur collector on the oxidation of different arsenopyrite concentrates under atmospheric tank leaching (ATL) conditions. The addition of the resin improved the oxidation of sulfides and favored the formation of elemental sulfur over the generation of sulfate. The presence of arsenic, however, introduces a serious disadvantage to the use of roasting and bacterial leaching, while high pressure oxidation involves high capital costs. The use of carbonaceous materials to enhance the dissolution of sulfides is not novel, and leaching additives such as coal, activated carbon and carbon powder have been considered for the improvement of bioleaching, atmospheric leaching, and pressure oxidation leaching processes. However, this type of technology has been focused mainly on the recovery of copper from copper concentrates containing chalcopyrite with less attention paid to other sulfides."
