The Cenozoic unconsolidated strata with the thickness of 100 to 240m in the east area of China are composed of clay, sandy clay and hardpan, etc. Numerous shafts of the coal mines in these areas have been damaged to various degrees since 1987, with the main reason for this being the subsidence of the super-thick unconsolidated strata. To prevent the continuing settlement deformation of unconsolidated strata caused by groundwater removal, long-term water injection through multiple boreholes controlled the settlement deformation of unconsolidated strata. A new type of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system was successfully used for real-time strain monitoring of the unconsolidated strata during water injection at a coal mine in China. A mathematical model for the compression settlement induced strain calculation is proposed which can assist understanding of the effect of water injection on the ground. With the increase in water injection, the unconsolidated strata compressed state was improved by the transition of the stress state from compressive to tensile stress. The wavelength change of fiber Bragg grating sensors corresponded with the trend of the water level in the same strata. Engineering practice indicates that these sensors can normally, safely and reliably survive conditions associated with hydrous unconsolidated strata. The FBG sensing can be used for continuous lifetime monitoring of the system, starting with real-time monitoring during low-pressure water injection process of multi-borehole. The results will give important guidance for water injection and mastering stratum subsidence.

ACCIDENT prevention as we know and understand it today is of comparatively recent origin. As a matter of fact, the Industrial Accident Prevention Association of Ontario, which is the oldest organization of its kind in the Dominion, celebrated its thirtieth anniversary only this year. On the other hand, one could say that the history of accident prevention is almost the history of mankind itself. In a general sense, every forward step that man has made throughout the centuries has been largely due to two things: (1) a desire for increased comfort, and (2) the need for safety; and, always, the need for safety has taken precedence over the desire for comfort. While it is true that hundreds of volumes have been published, dealing with the many aspects of accident prevention work, you cannot go to a library and pick out a book that has all the answers in it. Such a book has never been published-we are still looking for some of the answers. However, a good deal of real progress has been made.

"Dispersoids play a significant role in the recrystallization and texture development for wrought Al-Mg-Si (6xxx series) alloys by inhibiting grain boundary motion. It is therefore important to understand the precipitation kinetics of such particles. It is the additions of Mn and Cr in Al-Mg-Si based systems that can lead to dispersoid phases being formed. These phases are currently thought to nucleate on ß’-Mg2Si via an intermediate semi-coherent precipitate. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) has been conducted to study the precipitation of a-Al(CrFe)Si and a’-AlCrSi dispersoids. Corresponding electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) has been used to distinguish the dispersoids. The volume fraction and size distribution of dispersoids has been measured as a function of distance across a grain. Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) has been conducted to study the inhomogeneity of elements in the cast structure and the effect on dispersoid precipitation. Dispersoid free regions have been observed in the microstructure correlating to regions depleted in the dispersoid forming elements.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si (6xxx series) based alloys are increasingly being used in the automotive industry. The primary reason is to reduce the weight of vehicles, resulting in a reduction of CO2 emissions and increased fuel efficiency. The demand for 6xxx series is predicted to increase over the coming decade. Due to the high cost and CO2 emissions produced by raw extraction of aluminium, close loop recycling of these alloys becomes a more important process. However recycling of automotive alloys can be difficult due to pick up of impurity elements such as Mn, Cr and Fe. The addition of these elements can form dispersoid particles during early heat treatment processes. Although a controlled population of dispersoids is necessary to control the grain structure during thermo-mechanical processing, a significant change to the dispersoid population due to a composition change could profoundly influence the final microstructure, affecting the final properties of the material. More research is required on the precipitation and effect of additional minor alloying elements; in order to increase the 6xxx series alloys recyclability."

"A heuristic model was developed to simultaneously generate the ultimate pit and production scheduling at a mining project. The method consists of a preprocessing step to select a starter pit, the implementation of a genetic algorithm to optimize the pit and schedule of the starter pit, and a network-flow algorithm–based postprocessing operation to finalize the ultimate pit and production scheduling. Applied to an iron ore mine, the model pit and schedule produced a net present value 21% higher than the reference pit and schedule prepared by experienced field engineers.RÉSUMÉ Un modele heuristique a ete developpe pour generer simultanement l’ordonnancement de la fosse finale et de la production dans le cadre d’un projet minier. Cette methode comprend une etape de pretraitement visant a selectionner une premiere fosse, la mise en oeuvre d’un algorithme genetique pour optimiser la fosse et le calendrier d’execution de cette premiere fosse, ainsi qu’une operation de posttraitement basee sur des algorithmes de flux reseaux pour finaliser l’ordonnancement de la fosse finale et de la production. To accomplish this, an ore deposit is discretized into a number of smallsized elements called blocks, which are presented in a 3D block model structure. Because of economic and slope criteria, only a certain set of mining blocks can be extracted from the deposit constituting a pit. During mining, these blocks must be extracted in a specific sequence known as the production schedule."

"Industry practice for high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) assessment and sizing relies on tests using pilot-scale machines with 0.7–1.0 m roll diameters. Typically 1–10 t of sample are required, depending on the level of study and resource complexity. This is challenging during early-stage development, which hinders incorporating HPGR into designs. With support from the Canadian Mining Industry Research Organization, researchers at the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering at The University of British Columbia developed bench-scale piston–die press tests (PPTs) that correlate to pilot- and full-scale HPGRs. This paper describes a new regression model to estimate the HPGR-specific throughput rate using both PPT results and an HPGR database. "AbstractThis paper provides a rough outline of economic expectations for the near future and then goes on to discuss their effect on the expected demand for metals, using zinc, copper, nickel and aluminum as detailed examples.IntroductionMINING, as you are all painfully aware, is a cyclical business. We believe that it will remain so as long as there are economic cycles.The fortunes of the industry are tied to those sectors of the economy where decisions can be postponed until more favourable times: automobiles, housing, appliances, inventory building and capital spending. Over the past two years, while U.S. GNP fell by 3.8%, automobile production declined by 31 %, from 9.7 million units in 1973 to 6.7 million in 1975. Housing starts plummeted some 43% from 2.1 million units in 1973 to 1.2 million in 1975. Little wonder that U.S. copper consumption fell by 37% and zinc consumption by 38% over the same period.With the rest of the world's economies moving in unison with that of the United States, it is also not surprising that times have been tough for mining.Arthur Burns, chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve, contends that each recession sows the seeds of its own recovery. The worse the recession, the better the subsequent recovery. If this is true, then the lot of the mining industry should improve significantly over the next two to three years."

"THE Mindamar zinc-lead-copper mine, owned by Mindamar Metals Corporation Limited, is at Stirling in Richmond County, near the south-eastern shore of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia (Figure I). It is connected by several roads with the Canadian National railway at Sydney and St. Peters.The deposit is said to have been discovered around 1895 as an outcrop in the bed of Copper brook, but the details are obscure. Not until 1925, when it was optioned by American Cyanamid Company, was it developed underground. Between 1927 and 1938, the 1-nine was operated intermittently by The British Metal Corporation (Canada) Limited, and yielded approximately 200,000 tons of ore averaging about IO per cent zinc, 2 per cent lead, I per cent copper, and small quantities of silver and gold. In December 1950, Dome Exploration (Canada) Limited made an agreement with Mindamar Metaî Corporation Limited, which was exploring the old mine, to assume management and prepare the property for production. Production started in April 1952 with a new mill and a new four-compartment shaft, and between that time and the end of 1954 it has totalled 545,347 tons of ore averaging 5·89 per cent zinc, 1·35 per cent lead, 0·66 per cent copper, 0·032 oz. gold, and 2 151 oz. silver.The Mindamar orebodies are irregular lenses and large veins lying within a wide, almost vertical shear zone of remarkable persistency. The shear zone consists mainly of well-foliated sericite schist derived from siliceous siltstone, and it contains a vast amount of dolomite and magne-site of hydrothermal origin. Most of the ore is extremely fine-grained and some of the high-grade material has a conspicuous thinly layered structure. The metallic minerals, in order of decreasing abundance, are pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, and tennantite; the gangue minerals, in the same order, are dolomite and magnesite, quartz, sericite, talc, chlorite, barite, albite, and alunite.The geological setting of the deposit is shown in Figure 2. Except along streams and lake shores, almost all of the bedrock is concealed by glacial drift. The group of rocks in which the deposit occurs consists principally of greywacke, siltstone, tuff, brecoia, and Javas, and has been correlated lithologically with the Bourinot group of Middle Cambrian age. A short distance west of the mine, these rocks are in contact along the Stirling fault with conglomerate, arkosic sandstone, and quartzite belonging to the Middle River group of Silurian or Devonian (?) age, which elsewhere in the area overlies the Bourinot group unconformably. The large bodies of granitic rocks in the region, and the large lenticular masses of diorite and quartz diorite associated with them, have been assigned by Weeks (5, pp. 68-69) to the Devonian."

"The new smelting process commenced operation in 1978. The pelletizing and sinter plants were replaced with slurry-fed roasters and the blast furnaces with electric furnaces. The existing converter aisle and matte handling facilities remained unchanged.Process DescriptionNickel-copper concentrate is partially roasted in two slurry-fed fluid bed roasters. After gas cleaning, the sulphur dioxide gas is transferred to the acid plant. The roaster product is conveyed to two electric furnaces for smelting to produce a waste slag and furnace matte. The slag goes to the disposal area and furnace matte containing the metal values is processed in the converters for further removal of iron and sulphur.The final matte containing about 75 per cent metal values is shipped to the refinery in Norway.The commercial smelter was designed for 2135 tonnes per day of concentrate, with an availability of 85% . Roasters and electric furnaces were sized at 117 per cent of design, or 1250 tonnes per day on each of two lines. Mechanisation has been a predominant theme of the past 50 years in the mining industry, particularly underground mining. As the level of technology employed has increased, the anticipated productivity gains have not been realised and the differences are not explained by the demand for higher standards of safety and security. Now, mining costs are so high and productivity so low that the resultant return on investment for many Canadian operations has fallen to levels considered unacceptable in a competitive capital market. Simply continuing technological development cannot reverse this trend and its financial implications. The focus on technological development has distracted us from some basic truths. Systems that are more complex are more likely to fail and cost-effective processes depend on the continuity of productive activity and the flow of material. When putting these facts together, it becomes clear that in a system that has fixed external conditions, the single most crucial issue is the effective management of the operational cycle. By its nature, technology focuses our attention on what gets done and how it gets done, while the crucial issue is the increasingly longer periods in the operational cycle when nothing productive is being done. What is required is to match the level of technological complexity to the fixed system conditions, which are virtually unchangeable. This paper looks at the overall system and objectives and attempts to present an appropriate level of technology for the Canadian mining industry, now and in the foreseeable future.

Conventional project valuation techniques, such as discounted cash flow (DCF) method, are more frequently being criticised for the manner in which they consider the interacting effects of uncertainty and project structure (including management flexibility) on project value. Modern asset pricing (MAP; often called ?real options valuation? when applied to the analysis of flexibility) is a more general valuation framework that corrects many of the shortcomings of common valuation methods. Previous mining applications of MAP have tended to treat the ore deposit as a homogenous entity. While useful for demonstration purposes, this is inadequate for practical application in industry. This paper presents a MAP valuation example that allows for the heterogeneous nature of an ore deposit. It shows that deposit structure may increase the complexity of the mine planner?s decision so that results of a standard DCF analysis, or a simple MAP analysis that ignores the details of deposit structure, are misleading. In the example, a management is considering the development of an adjacent low-grade zone while mining operations in a high-grade zone are ongoing. If the low-grade zone is developed before high-grade reserves are exhausted, the proposed development will include both low-grade zone development and a capacity expansion to handle additional low-grade reserve production. If development of these reserves is delayed until the high-grade reserves are depleted, then the low-grade reserves can be developed without a capacity expansion. A typical DCF analysis would reduce the management?s decision problem to three alternatives: 1) continue mining only in the highgrade reserves, 2) immediately develop the low-grade reserves and expand capacity, and 3) delay low-grade zone development until the high-grade reserves are exhausted. The model presented here allows the management to reconsider the development and capacity expansion decision on a discrete half-year basis. It delineates price regions, for given levels of high-grade zone reserves, in which it is optimal to develop the low-grade zone, defer low-grade zone development and abandon the mine irrevocably. The model presented here extends the ability of mine planners to describe actual project structure while using the MAP valuation framework that is already noted for its capacity to combine project uncertainty and risk insights with a dynamic project description.

By 1980, the free world's need for economic sources of energy is expected to double. As a result, there will be a tremendous potential for all energy sources working together to supply the demand. For coal to continue its dominant role as a low-cost energy source, means must be found for it to meet the challenge of nuclear power and to overcome obstacles placed on its use by air and water pollution regulations. As the more limited reserves of gas and oil diminish, economic ways are also required for converting coal to synthetic liquid and gaseous fuels, and to chemicals, thus resulting in optimum utility of the most abundant low-cost fuel resource. The means for accomplishing these ends can only come about by a vigorous research and development program. Successful efforts by industry and government working together, both in America and abroad, will assure the continued use of coal to meet the world's energy demands. This paper discusses the emerging patterns of energy sources throughout the world and the role that research and development on coal will play in supplying future energy requirements.

MECHANIZATION During the last fifteen years, numerous attempts have been made to mechanize the operations of loading ore and placing till. It is to be regretted that, to date, little progress has been made in this direction. The comparative efficiency of manual labour in Spain is the factor largely responsible for the failure to cheapen costs by mechanization. The necessity for careful classification of the ore and the need for keeping all openings small also makes the problem one of difficulty. It may be of interest to describe the various attempts at mechanization that have so far been made. CONVEYORS: (1) When stoping by layout III in San Dionisio, a trial was made of transporting the filling by jigging conveyors. This method proved un-economical, as the wall building and spreading of the till could not keep pace with the delivery, with the result that the machinery was idle a great part of the shift. (2) The transport of ore from the working places to the ore-passes by jigging conveyors and belts was also tried. Although more successful than in the case of the fill, the method could not compete with that of hand tramming, principally due to the high cost of (a) maintenance caused by the abrasiveness of pyrites, and (b) labour constantly employed on re-aligning the conveyors owing to the constant settlement of the floor. In a few cases, where a sill floor was being blocked out in virgin ground, the method showed a saving. SCRAPERS: Frequent attempts at loading by scrapers have been made, but again the only success obtained has been in the blocking-out of sill floors. The principal obstacle to the successful application of scraping, other than on the sill floor, has been that the openings, which have to be small, call for a light scraper outfit, whereas, in practice, a heavy scraper and at least a 25 h.p. winch are necessary for handling satisfactorily the ore, which is heavy and which breaks somewhat blockily.

One of the fundamental trade-offs for copper concentrators is between grinding circuit product size and copper recovery. The capital and operating cost savings and throughput increases for a coarser grind should be evaluated against potential recovery reductions. Other benefits of coarser grinds, such as GHG emissions reductions and favourable effects on tailings and water management should also be considered. This paper assesses the formation of laboratory and pilot test programs, design of process flowsheets, equipment selection, and evaluation methods to determine the most appropriate and economical grind size for a given deposit. The paper will include an evaluation of case studies. INTRODUCTION The majority of the world’s mined copper comes from sulphide deposits, which are mostly processed using crushing, grinding, flotation and dewatering flowsheets to produce copper-bearing concentrates for smelting. Ores must be ground to a sufficiently fine size to achieve an acceptable level of liberation to allow both high recovery of copper and valuable by-product minerals while efficiently rejecting gangue to tailings. Therefore, a key design parameter in process plant design is the grind size of the flotation feed. Copper concentrators use a variety of grind size targets that depend on various factors, including ore mineralogy and the grain sizes of valuable and gangue minerals; the sensitivity of valuable mineral recoveries in the rougher flotation stages to grind size, ore hardness; electricity costs; and mining vs. processing throughput constraints. Typically, copper and by-product recovery increase as grind size is reduced, which can improve revenue, but finer grinds increase power and grinding media operating costs and may have implications for tailings management. This paper explores the trade-offs that should be assessed in determining the optimum grind size, and to answer the question if coarser grinds are worthwhile. METALLURGICAL AND FLOWSHEET FACTORS Recovery-by-size behaviour of sulphide-bearing particles In base metals sulphide flotation, it is typical that flotation recoveries vary by particle size. Metal sulphide particles rendered hydrophobic by collector in intermediate size ranges (e.g. 10 to 100 um) usually show very high recoveries, often approaching 100%. Recovery usually falls away in finer size fractions (<10 um) as fine particles have little inertia and can move around bubbles without colliding and attaching to them. Coarser particles (>100 um) are susceptible to particle-bubble detachment and dropback (Jameson, 2019).

"Al-Mg-Si alloys often add small additions of e.g. Mn or Cr, to form dispersoids, which may act as nucleation sites for Mg2Si particles after homogenization. The purpose is to ensure a high density of uniformly distributed small ?’-particles, which can be dissolved during further processing prior to the final age hardening step. However, their density and spatial distribution are critically dependent on the homogenization procedure. It is therefore important to have a robust and reliable method for assessing their spatial distribution. In the present work an existing methodology for assessing spatial uniformity, the Global Shannon Entropy (GSE), has been implemented and evaluated for different dispersoid structures characterized by scanning electron microscopy. This metric is highly dependent on the parameters used, but by careful selection of adequate parameters, it can be effective in detecting non-uniformity. An important weakness with the GSE was identified, and a modification to improve on the ability to differentiate degrees of non-uniformity is suggested. To evaluate the proposed methodology, the effect of heating rate on dispersoid precipitation behaviour during homogenisation of four Al-Mg-Si alloys with different Mn/Cr-content has been investigated. The metric with the new term has demonstrated promising results, and improved the ability to differentiate degrees of spatial uniformity.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si series alloys are the most common aluminium extrusion alloys and are attractive for applications in a range of sectors (e.g. construction, automotive and recently also in consumer electronics), due to their generally good combination of strength, ductility and corrosion resistance. However, their extrudability and end properties depend critically on the alloy chemistry as well as prior processing conditions. Coarse ß-AlFeSi or Mg2Si-particles typically have a detrimental effect on extrudability, while small dispersoid particles may affect recrystallization, grain growth and precipitation of Mg and Si. The strengthening potential in the final age hardening step depends strongly on the amount of Mg and Si in solid solution after extrusion. The manner in which these particles are spatially distributed will decide whether the final product will exhibit uniform properties, and the number density and sizes will determine the extent of the effect. As such, these are important characteristics."

THE PURPOSE of this investigation was to study part of the ternary system Co-Fe-S. Jensen ( 1) established the solubility limits of sulphur in pyrrhotite. The compound with 61.7 per cent Fe, corresponding to a formula Fe12S13, was found to melt congruently at l,192°C. Hulsmann and Weibke(2) determined the Co-S phase diagram from O to 35.2 per cent S. The solubility limits of sulphur in the com-pound Co(l-x)S were not determined. The initial object of the present in-vestigation was to determine the composition at which the compound Coci-xiS melted congruently. "The growth of the mining industry in British Columbia in the last ten years has been largely the result of the development of large low-grade copper and molybdenum deposits. There are two problems which must be solved in the search for mineral deposits of this type. It is necessary to detect large volumes of rock containing a low percentage of total sulphide mineralization1 and, secondly, to get some idea of the economic significance of this mineralization. The standard geophysical exploration techniques available have a varying degree of application in the search for disseminated sulphide de-posits. The electrical methods, and the induced polarization method in particular, are the most successful direct methods, and magnetic methods have indirect application in most situations. This is illustrated by geo-physical survey results from several properties in British Columbia."

"Finance Minister Donald Macdonald's budget of May 25, 1976 featured a restructuring of the anti-inflation profit controls and a grab bag of tax changes, some of direct interest to the mining industry. All Canadian taxpayers now will be permitted to write off immediately 100% of mineral and oil and gas exploration expenses included after• May 25, 1976 and before July 1 1979. The cost of acquitting Canadian resource property after May 6, 197.4 from a federal or provincial government will now clearly be included in Canadian development expense, and provincial drilling and exploration incentives received after May 25, 1976 will not reduce exploration and development expense for federal income tax purposes. Under tough new anti-inflation profit controls, all controlled businesses, except distributions, will essentially have one uniform set of rules for• determining allowable profit margins; this allowable margin will be determined by product line or by over-all net margin and will be 85% of the higher of the margin obtained in the five years preceding October• 13, 1975 or the one year preceding May 1, 1976. The basic capital cost allowance system is to continue, but many rates will be revised. The ability to offset losses created through claiming capital cost allowances on leased equipment, etc. against other income will be ended with respect to transactions entered into a/te1• budget night. Miscellaneous other tax changes will raise the low rate base for Canadian-controlled private corporations to $750,000 increase retitement plan contribution limits and reduce the rate of branch tax imposed on branches of corporations resident in a country with which Canada has a comprehensive tax treaty to equal the withholding tax rate on dividends under that treaty."
