Reduced intrusion-related gold deposits have become a new, low-grade, large-tonnage exploration target during the last decade. The best recognized examples of such deposits are recognized throughout the Tintina Gold Province of the northern North American Cordillera. Because such examples may have many features in common with orogenic gold deposits, such as anomalous Bi, W and Te, low salinity and CO2-rich ore fluids, and a spatial/temporal association with igneous rocks, confusion and controversy have now become commonplace in classification of many gold deposits formed along convergent margins. The best discriminators of IRGS are likely to be their: +        regional location in deformed shelf sequences on the inboard side of a series of accreted terranes and within terranes that also contain important tin and (or) tungsten deposits; +        local spatial association of gold ores with cupolas and contact aureoles of relatively reduced, alkaline-leaning, and volatile-rich plutons; +        post-deformational timing of gold deposition; +        extremely low sulfide content (commonly <1 vol %) of ores within igneous bodies and the outward zoning, through proximal skarns and to distal base metal-rich veins, from the causative pluton; and +        low grades (<1 g/t Au) of auriferous sheeted vein systems in pluton cupolas.

The Thames gold-silver deposits are part of the Hauraki goldfield, situated within the Miocene to Pliocene calc-alkaline Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The Waitangi vein system is one of the mineralised ore shoots in the Thames district. The Thames gold deposits are characterised by shallow level epithermal vein mineralisation with phyllic to advanced argillic alteration assemblages and abundant sulphide minerals including pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite. Gold occurs as electrum in association with sulphide minerals. Microprobe analyses.of sphalerite grains from the Waitangi deposit mostly range from 0.8 to 1.5 mole % FeS, although one sample contains 9.5 mole % FeS. Arsenopyrite from Waitangi yields a range from 33.1 to 34.6 atomic As (%). There is no discernible correlation between the FeS content of sphalerite and gold grade in the Waitangi deposit suggesting that gold deposition is probably not controlled by changes in temperature and activity of sulphur aS2 that control the FeS content of sphalerite. The possible causes for gold deposition are thought to be boiling, mixing and changes in pH. Sulphur isotope analyses of mixed sphalerite-galena and sphalerite-galena-ehalcopyrite samples yield a narrow range of d34SCDT values (-1.0 to 0.9 ë;n=5), whereas late spongy pyrite gives unusually light sulphur isotope values (-16.7 to -27.9 ë; n=4). The sulphur isotopic values of base metal sulphides from Waitangi suggest that the sulphur was derived from a magmatic source. However, the source of light sulphur in the late pyrite grains is not known. Preliminary fluid inclusion+studies indicate homogenisation temperatures between 173¦ and 284¦C and salinities of 0.23.0 NaCI equiv. wt % (uncorrected for C02). Vein quartz at Waitangi yields d18OSMOW values from 6.8 to 12.7 ë (n=23). The calculated oxygen isotopic composition of ore fluids is between -2.1 to 3.8 ë at 250¦C and -0.1-5.8 ë at 300¦C. Oxygen isotope analyses have revealed significant variations in d18O values with elevation and gold grades. Zones of gold enrichment coincide with a zone of variable oxygen isotope values at the top of the vein system, where boiling and/or fluid mixing most likely occurred. Oxygen isotope values varying with gold grades within the Waitangi conduits suggest that d18O values may be useful in targeting bonanza grade gold mineralisation in epithermal vein systems.

The Greymouth Coal Project is a proposal to mine by the application of proven hydraulic, and room and pillar underground mining methods; and to process the equivalent of an average of 1.7 million tonnes per year over a forty-year period. The proposed mine site is located ten kilometres north of Greymouth, on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Of the three separate mineable seam groups, the thick Main Seam Group, which makes up 77% of the total resource, will be mined by hydraulic mining technology.   It is proposed to market and produce a high volatile bituminous type coal with low ash (6%) and sulphur (0.4%). Because the inherent ash content is low, the requirement for coal treatment will only be the use of a single cell jig circuit to control the effects of rock dilution and partings. The resulting coal product is tentatively planned to be transported by rail to the port at Lyttelton for loading on to Panamax or Post Panamax size vessels.

The Kauri Block (Hauraki Hill) andMatawai Valley epithermal vein systems, near Coromandel township, are hosted by hydrothermally altered Miocene andesites and Mesozoic greywackes of the Coromandel VolcanicZone. The hydrological setting of both geothermal systems was probably that of an andesitic volcanic arc. Two types of veins are recognised: 1. Simple veins composed of fine comb quartz, and 2. Complex (breccia) veins composed of vein fragments of sulphide-bearing, chalcedonic silica cemented by saccharoidal and fine comb quartz.   Pyrite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, and gold form the ore minerals. Both deposits historically exploited hypogene and supergene bonanza gold.   At Hauraki Hill, breccia veins up to 7m wide contain abundant fragments of recrystallised colloform banded-crustiform textured quartz veins ('Golden Cross' style) and were probably major channels for ascending deep mineralising fluids. Alteration assemblages are zoned with the higher elevations of Hauraki Hill-Bunkers Hill characterised by strong kaolinite alteration whereas deeper levels are dominated by illitic clays.   At Matawai, complex veins and hydrothermal breccias pinch and swell, and inflect, within a total width of veining and alteration that exceeds 50 m. The greywacke host rocks are altered to an assemblage of illitesmectite, quartz, chlorite and pyrite although there are pockets of kaolinite.   The proposed genesis of veins and ores in both deposits invokes episodic rapid mixing (quenching) of hot mineralising reservoir fluids with cool acid condensate waters, whilst acidification and increased fO2 triggered gold deposition. These hydrothermal systems heated up during their later stages and at Matawai visible gold was deposited from a late mesothermal stage. The main conclusion is that the northwest CVZ has excellent potential for large gold deposits (= 30 tonnes contained gold).

If lead buttons are cupelled under closely controlled conditions in a suitable design of furnace, silver losses during cupellation are given by a simple equation. The effect of copper on these silver losses has been studied and a "copper limit" for cupellation has been determined. Scorification and crucible fusion procedures for copper-bearing materials have been designed so that the lead buttons produced will not contain amounts of copper greater than this determined copper limit. Silver losses during these crucible fusion and scorification procedures are given by the distribution law, and can be calculated. Thus, silver can be determined in copper-bearing materials with a satisfactory degree of accuracy provided that the appropriate corrections for losses are applied to the weight of the silver prill produced.

The Rise and Shine Shear Zone is a mineralised low angle deformation zone traceable for at least 7 km through biotite zone schist of the Dunstan Range, central Otago. Rocks from the shear zone obtained from recent drillholes are unweathered and facilitate paragenetic studies. There is a progression of mineral deposition from semiductile foliation-parallel shearing, to subsequent folding, and brittle fracturing. Sheared rocks are dominated by microshears containing fine grained hydrothermal muscovite and rutile that has recrystallised from metamorphic muscovite and titanite respectively. Euhedral pyrite occurs within segregations in the schist and is locally brecciated by the shears.   Arsenopyrite occurs within microshears and is intergrown with hyrothermal muscovite. Fractures within relatively undeformed schist are filled with ankerite, siderite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena and these veinlets also crosscut the microshears. Locally the schist is folded and zones of brecciation, silicification and vein deposition overprint the rock. Vein quartz and albite predominate and arsenopyrite and gold infill breccia matrix and crosscutting veinlets. Sulphide deposition began in the later stages of metamorphism with pyrite deposited in quartz-albite segregations. Subsequent shearing caused brecciation of some grains and accompanied deposition of arsenopyrite ¦ gold and rare sulphides along foliation-parallel microshears. Minor amounts of chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena were then remobilised in ankerite veins that crosscut the shears. In areas of high strain, arsenopyrite was then deposited as euhedral grains in veins and breccias. Synmineralisation deformation caused the brecciation of some grains and gold was deposited infilling fractures in the arsenopyrite. The paragenetic sequence shows gold mineralisation occurred in two distinct sets of structures (semiductile and brittle) that formed at different times in the formation of the shear zone.

Since its inception in 1962, the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre has adopted the view that an effective method of training highly qualified engineers for the mineral industry is the pursuit of postgraduate research programmes conducted in operations, that is, in the mines and processing plants of the industry which the research serves. The paper describes how this is achieved in practice, at little or no cost to the taxpayer, and explores the strengths and weaknesses of this approach in the context of a dual mission for the Centre: 1. The postgraduate training of engineers for the mineral industry. 2. The production of useful R &I) for the mineral industry. Topics discussed include financing, relationships with industry and Government, the maintenance of academic excellence, research style, the marketing of research, and limits to growth.

The Macraes Gold Mine has implemented a Zero Accident Programme and this paper reviews some of the factors responsible for the implementation.

The purpose of this paper is to outline current research on the Paparoa and, at the request of conference organisers, to present a general introduction to the geology of the Greymouth Coalfield as background to more specialised papers. Few results of my present work will be given; these can be presented at the next conference. Briefly, the research aims for an understanding of the controls which depositional environment has exerted on coal character, to be reached by a study of coal type and thickness, shape and extent of seams, integrated with a basinal analysis of the coal measures. An accurate description of the coalfield in these terms should facilitate prediction of subsurface trends, with possible application to the planning of drilling programs, and to mine development. Although study of Paparoa coal types is included here as only part of the research, coal type should be recognised as an important concept which has until revently been almost entirely neglected in New Zealand.

Being a geologist I intend describing the renaissance of the gold industry in Australia within its geologic framework; there is a geological pattern to the numerous gold projects which have been brought on stream over the past decade. We are now about midway through our third and largest gold boom which, at a peak of 7.5 million ounces is about twice the production peaks achieved in the preceding booms. From discovery in 1851 through 1870 we saw the first boom largely based on alluvial production in NSW and in Victoria at the great Ballarat and Bendigo Goldfields. The discovery of the Golden Mile in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, underpinned the second gold boom in the period 1895 - 1915. On that basis the present boom should last through the next decade.   It has been a golden decade for Australian gold production. From less than ten mines in 1980 with production over 10 000 ounces and the largest, Telfer, with output of about 130 000 ounces we now find over 130 deposits being worked around the country today that produce over 10 000 ounces with the largest, Boddington, having an output of over 400 000 ounces. In total these mines produced an estimated 210 tonnes of gold in 1989 and we expect this year, 1990, that a new record production of between 240 and 250 tonnes will be set. This positions Australia in third place in the Western World behind South Africa #1 and the USA #2 and fourth in the world with the Russians holding second place overall behind the South Africans.

Rehabilitation, reclamation and restoration are all terms used to describe the repair of land after mining. Here, restoration is used to mean restoring the land's original use, capability or productivity. Effective restoration is dependent on good planning before mining commences and must include a clear definition of post-mining objectives. The physical condition of the land within the mining licence was that of an imperfectly drained soil in permanent pasture, supporting a seasonal supply dairying unit. During the mining process, the soil layers were separated, with the topsoil stockpiled separately. As part of the restoration process, the land was recontoured to encourage surface drainage, with topsoil spread evenly over the recontoured tailings. Low grond pressure machinery was used to minimise soil compaction, with light discing and harrowing used to increase water infiltration. A permanent pasture was sown, with weed species controlled by spraying, both before and after pasture establishment.  Soil testing has been used extensively to ensure there were no nutrient deficiencies that good compromise pasture establishment and performance. Controlled grazing practices were used to ensure that the sown pastures became well established.

The Watershed tungsten deposit is located in the Hodgkinson Province of north Queensland, Australia. The deposit is hosted by Siluro-Devonian flysch-type meta-sediments of the Hodgkinson Formation, which were subjected to four major deformation events. Mineralisation has occurred syn- to post-D4 and is related to the intrusion of S-type granitoids of the Permian Whypalla Supersuite.Watershed is located within a regional NW–SE-striking melange zone composed of brecciated and intermixed arenites and shales. The major NW–SE-striking Tullah fault zone is situated in close proximity to the east of the deposit.The Watershed deposit occurs within a tightly folded upright anticline with NW-plunging fold axis. The anticline contains a major package of coarse-grained to conglomeratic arenite, which harbours the Watershed mineralisation. Several alteration styles occur within the arenites, of which Fe-poor calc-silicate alteration dominated by clinozoisite/epidote is the most significant. Less widespread but locally important alteration styles comprise garnet-dominated calc-silicate alteration, albitisation and sericitisation. The arenites are enveloped by unmineralised carbonaceous shales and shale breccias.Tungsten mineralisation occurs solely as molybdenum-poor scheelite and can be found as three styles: disseminated mineralisation in calc-silicate altered arenites, vein-style mineralisation with quartz-albite-scheelite veins and minor but high-grade mineralisation in albitised felsic dykes.Contact metamorphic rocks and geophysical data indicate the proximity of an underlying granitic body. It is believed that this granitic body was the main driver of the hydrothermal system generating the Watershed deposit. An early mineralisation stage caused the selective calc-silicate alteration of the arenites, while a second stage caused the vein-style high-grade mineralisation. The folded shales enveloping the arenites worked as an effective barrier that kept the mineralising fluids in a confined rock volume.The scheelite mineralisation at Watershed is open to depth, with a granite-hosted porphyry or greisen-style mineralisation anticipated below the current resource.CITATION:Griessmann, M and Williamson, J, 2015. This paper presents measurement and analysis of the dynamic response of a five-storey building to very high frequency excitation (>100 Hz) from blasting vibrations originating from a contiguous excavation of rock. Velocity response measurements in the rock and on the structure were employed to calculate the time-correlated dynamic displacement response of the building to blasting. Time-correlated structure response measurements are needed to advance the understanding of the response of urban structures to high-frequency excitation. Current regulations and understanding are based upon measurements of the response of one- to two-storey residential structures by 10 to 40 Hz excitation. The extension of these observations to taller structures when excited by high-frequency excitation needs to be investigated further.Measurements show that the amplification patterns at the ground level and top of the structure match or are lower than that observed by the US Bureau of Mines (Siskind et al, 1980) for the shorter residential structures. They decrease with increasing peak particle velocity. From the measurements, the global transverse shear strains found by differentiating ground floor and top displacements were calculated to be 12 µstrains. Time-correlated bottom and top of structure displacements show that building response may be more reflective of wave propagation up the structure than whole-structure inter-storey drift.In addition, a 3D model was used to compare computed displacements and strains to measured results. Modelled responses varied considerably, both in magnitude and location of the maximum strain. No conclusion can be made regarding the best 3D model to employ to simulate building response. More data such as motions measured at many points in the structure are needed. Maximum inter-storey transverse shear strains calculated with the model were found through the acceleration excitation and were less than 12 µstrains for 37 mm/s rock motion excitation. The Thames Goldfi.eld has been a major gold resource in the west of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand, with the Waiotahi quartz vein system forming a large part of the field. Mineralisation is hosted by hydrothermally altered Miocene andesitic volcanic rocks. Both massive columnar-jointed and fragmental volcanic rocks are present. The vein system is dominated by the steeply dipping NE striking Waiotahi-Cambria vein, and associated splays. Hydrothermal alteration increases in intensity from isolated blocks of propylitic altered andesitic material, into the intensely clay altered equivalent. Low rank propylitic alteration is typified by chlorite, calcite and pyrite, with local illite or epidote. Clay alteration is characterised by illite, quartz, kaolinite and pyrite. While broadly forming halos around veining, intense clay alteration also occurs in strongly jointed portions of the hostrock.   Vein textures and the intense illitic clay alteration at Thames are similar to those in some of the other epithermal gold deposits of the Coromandel Volcanic zone, and in deposits of the Philippines, all related to andesitic terranes. Possible causes for textures and alteration being different in these deposits from the more classic Quartz-Adularia-Illite type epithermal systems may be that cooling/mixing rather than boiling dominates fluid evolution. Kaolinite may be also be a product of either of these different fluid types, or has resulted from overprinting of an illitic assemblage by downward percolation of acidic fluid.

The Pilbara Block is a nucleus of Archaean rocks which lies in the North West Land Division of Western Australia, and it constitutes a mineral province that has been divided into two areas-the West Pilbara Goldfield and the Pilbara Goldfield.In the West Pilbara Goldfield two contemporaneous environments are represented by laterally equivalent volcanic and sedimentary successions which together comprise the Roebourne Group. The two successions are lithologically similar to the classical Warrawoona (volcanic) and Mosquito Creek (sedimentary) successions of the Pilbara Goldfield; but in the West Pilbara Goldfield there is no sign of the erosional break which separates the Warrawoona Succession from the Mosquito Creek succession. The Roebourne Group and the igneous rocks which have intruded it belong to the Archaean Pilbara System.Evidence of preconsolidation movement and igneous intrusion into unconsolidated sediment suggests that tectonism and igneous activity, localized along lines of fracture in an unidentified basement, beganbefore lithification was complete. Movement was primarily vertical, and persisted into the Lower Proterozoic.Vulcanicity and chemical sedimentation, accompanied by a diminution of detr:tal sedimentation, is thought to have caused a relative enrichment in the metal content of the middle part of the Roebourne Group; and the metal may have been remobilized during diagenesis and metamorphism, and localized in zones of dislocation formed both before and after consolidation of the sediments.INTRODUCTIONThe name "Pilbara" has been widely applied in the area under discussion, and to avoid confusion the various uses are summarized below.1. The Huntly West Mine has undergone significant changes in the last two years, which will affect the remainder of the mine's life. The paper describes the evolvement of plans and an overview of the technical considerations made in planning for and implementing the first New Zealand longwall operation. The technical investigations involve the longwall equipment, exploration, ventilation and strata control. The focus on these areas was to ensure that unacceptable project risks were addressed. Implementation of longwall mining at West Mine is planned in three phases, Development, Panel One extraction trial, and Full Longwall operation.   At present the development phase is complete, longwall installation is in progress and production start-up is planned for the end of August, 1991.

This paper examines the issues involved in the technical audit and valuation of exploration prospects. Certain methodologies are more appropriate to use depending upon whether the mineral property valuation is of an exploration area, a project under development, or an operating mine. Valuation approaches that are reviewed include the Multiple of Exploration Expenditure, Joint Venture Terms, Rules of Thumb, and particularly the Kilburn Rating Method. The DCF/NPV Financial Simulation Method, even modified by the use of Expected Values, is not considered appropriate for valuing exploration prospects. The choice of the most appropriate methodology and its successful application depends primarily upon the amount of reliable input data available and, more importantly, the experience and judgement of the valuer. It must be remembered that all valuations are time and circumstance specific and will be generally subject to revision as more data becomes available.

The Hill 50 Gold Mine is situated at Boogardie, 3 miles on a bearing of 295 degrees from; Mount Magnet township. Mount Magnet lies 300 miles north-north-east of Perth, Western Australia (Fig. 1).The older workings of the mine may be identified with those of Sirdar, Gold Mining Lease 696M The Sirdar had been worked before 1902 though no records remain, and irom 1903 to 1912 about a thousana tons at a grade of 6' 2 dwt. was extracted annually; by the end of 1918 6,225 oz. of gold had been obtained from the milling of 17,852 tons of ore. In view of these yields, and the length and width of the lode, this mine was early recognized as one of the most promising in the district. From 1919 to 1924 the ground,including G.M.L. 1282M, was held as Mt. Zion G.M.L. 1183M.The Hill 50 Gold Mine N.L. company took up the workings as Hill 50 G.M.L. 1282M in 1934 and have continued operations to the date of writing. To the end of 1956 the Hill 50 Gold Mine had yielded 982,106 tons of ore for a return of 448,'602 fine oz. of gold.The mine has been described by: J utson (1915), Feldtmann (1920), Johnson (1949), and Finucane (1953). Finucane (1953) details the mine structure to a depth of 414 ft. The author was able to examine the mine to a depth of 1305 ft. Detailed main level mapping to the 1060 level and a detailed surface examination have revealed aspects of the structure which were previously obscure.
