Several spatially and/or temporally distinct phases of epithermal activity can be recognised in the Horohoro-Matahana Basin area of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. In the northern Matahana Basin a 140 - 350 ka age range is proposed for mineralised debris flow clasts and related (?) epithermal  mineralisation intersected in a recent drillhole. To the east, a ca. 40 - 50 ka age range is suggested for epithermal activity in the Waikaukau alteration zone which was focused along the Guthrie Fault. Hydrothermal explosion breccias occur over 13 km within the Guthrie Graben, and are probably sourced from vents in the south. Assuming a common origin, these breccias are constrained to a 45 - 50 ka age range. Within the Horohoro hydrothermal system (around the present hot spring), older (15 - 50 ka) and younger (0 - 15 ka) features can be distinguished.

Ground support performance is critical to the safe and economical extraction of ore. This is particularly important for mass mining extractions at great depth, which are currently being considered by a large number of mining companies worldwide. As the in situ stresses concentrate around critical excavations, failure occurs at the excavation boundaries and ground support is required for the excavations to remain safe and accessible for their intended lifespan. Ground support consists of reinforcing elements that are installed within the rock mass to modify its internal behaviour (generally to within one excavation radius) and surface support elements that are installed at the exposed boundaries to retain the failed pieces of rock. For surface support to be effective, the loadings need to be transferred to the reinforcing elements; however, the combined performance of rock bolts and mesh is poorly understood in terms of the energy dissipation capacity available for a typical ground support scheme implemented at most mass mining operations.Over the last 15 years or so, a large number of large-scale laboratory experiments have been completed at the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) Dynamic Test Facility for reinforcement systems and surface support systems loaded separately. The objective of more recent testing has been to establish the combined energy dissipation capacity of typical and enhanced reinforcement systems combined with mesh surface support. Total energy dissipation has been separated into energy dissipation attributable to the reinforcement and to the mesh. The Ispat Mexicana SA de CV (IMEXSA) pelletising plant is located at Lazaro Cardenas on the west coast of Mexico. It is the primary source of feed stock for the adjacent direct reduction (DR) plants and steelmaking facilities. The initial design of the pellet plant began in 1981 for 3 Mtpa of DR grade pellets using local concentrate received by pipeline.' Several construction delays, an ownership change, and a decision to use imported concentrates delivered in 60 000 to 90 000 tonnes ship cargoes required flowsheet modifications and additions. The design concepts are described for the plant which includes concentrate regrind to final pelletising particle size.

This paper is a collection of thoughts and frameworks. It addresses a simple question: æIf we are to believe the large number of people and institutions indicating that humans are destroying the Earth and that the end is nigh, why do we bother trying to be sustainable?Æ The paper lays out evidence for the existence of multiple hazards to global society. The existence of a hazard alone is insufficient to make an assessment of risk. Risk estimates are required to support decision-making. An approach to assessing risk is provided and some limited data are presented. A new ædefinitionÆ or statement of what sustainability (in a broad sense) might have become is then given. A decision framework for guiding decision- making about the risks is developed. This framework includes a definition of leadership with inherent implications for what determines whether a leadership position by title is actually leading. The paper concludes by offering a view of minerals industry sustainability and considerations around maturity in the current economic situation. It is hoped that by placing this collection of frameworks around sustainability, a supporting structure emerges that will facilitate action. It is proposed that action taken in this way will be more effective than reaction to regulation or even social license to operate imperatives because it is driven by a more holistic view of the challenges and the potential roles of individuals û all of whom are potential leaders at some scale of action.

The history of zinc production in Australia is outlined including attempts to make zinc electrolytically at Cockle Creek, N.S.W. in the last century, the use of horizontal retorts at Cockle Creek and Port Pirie, South Australia, production by electrolysis at Risdon, Tasmania and at Port Pirie using zinc oxide fumed from lead blast furnace slag and production by the Imperial Smelting process at Cockle Creek. Developments in the electrolytic process are described including those in roasting, acid manufacture, leaching, purification, electrolysis, melting and casting. The Imperial Smelting process technology is also outlined. In both processes global technology is reviewed, including important Australian contributions.

Block cave fragmentation has been documented in the literature to have a significant impact on mine design, performance and downstream material handling and comminution processes. Due to this impact, emphasis is placed on the premining prediction and subsequent quantification of primary and secondary fragmentation distribution. This paper discusses the fragmentation prediction and assessment methodology employed at the Ridgeway Deeps (RWD) and Cadia East PC1 (CEPC1) cave operations.Prediction of drawpoint fragmentation was based on an iterative process, which relied on an improved quantitative and qualitative understanding of the rock mass as the mining project developed. In particular, the collection of scanline mapping data provided detailed information in relation to discontinuity trace length, persistence, termination characteristics and large-scale planarity. This allowed an improved estimation of select modelling input parameters, in particular ‘block forming’ discontinuity orientation and strength characteristics.With the start of production, drawpoint fragmentation assessment was undertaken using digital image processing (DIP) techniques for drawpoint extracted tonnes up to 61 000 t. This technique provided a consistent methodology to estimate changes in fragmentation as the block cave matured. It can generally be concluded that the measured mean fragmentation distribution became finer as drawpoint tonnage increased. The incremental change in fragmentation distribution (per 10 000 t) was not uniform, with step changes evident. In addition, for a given geotechnical domain and drawpoint tonnage, the measured fragmentation distribution range was found to vary significantly. A possible explanation for these observations may relate to the disturbed flow behaviour noted from marker experiments at RWD and CEPC1. These experiments indicate that material reporting at the drawpoints (for any given tonnage extracted) may be sourced from highly variable heights within the cave, with finer material preferentially reporting.A comparison between predicted and measured drawpoint fragmentation distribution indicated two general findingsa close match between predicted and measured distributions for material greater than 1.0 m3an under prediction of finer material passing 0.5 m3 relative to measured.The findings would indicate that the fragmentation modelling frameworks utilised at both RWD and CEPC1 were deficient at predicting the percentage of finer material for both primary and secondary fragmentation.The wide range in fragmentation distributions observed in the measured results, and the discrepancy between modelled and measured fines should be considered in the design of mine (material flow, extraction level geometry and draw rate), material handling (crushing and material movement), and downstream milling (comminution and metal recovery) processes for future block cave mines at the Cadia Valley Operations (CVO). With respect to fragmentation distribution range, a sensitivity analysis should be undertaken for these design considerations, with a range in predicted fragmentation distributions investigated (for example, lower quartile, mean and upper quartile). For future mines with similar geotechnical and mining conditions, the calibration of fines should be considered in any fragmentation distribution prediction to match those measured previously.CITATION:Brunton, I, Lett, J L and Thornhill, T, 2016. Whilst much has been written in past years by geologists, scientists, mining engineers, etc., regarding the well·known and justly notorious anticlinal, or, as they are more commonly known, " saddle" reefs of Bendigo, comparatively little noticehas been given to the synclinal or "inverted saddle "reefs and their relationship with each other. In taking up the question of the synclinal folds, I recognise that it is a large undertaking to confine within the limits of a short paper, and at the same time convey a comprehensive idea of their characteristics, and the importance of their relationship with the anticlinal folds, in the general question of practical mining. However, from a practical point of view I consider the question of great importance, and if an interest in it can be awakened, more particularly among practical men, the object of this paper will be achieved.Before entering into the subject I must briefly state some facts, and perhaps some theories, in respect to the deposition of the Lower Silurian rocks, and their subsequent buckling up, as now seen on the Bendigo gold-field. At the same time, I do not intend to go very closely into the geological aspect of the question, as I wish the paper to be considered as a practical one.

A suite of specimens from the newly developed Black Star copper ore body at Mount Isa was made available for mineragraphic study by the Mount Isa Mines, Ltd. The specimens were selected as representative of the different phases of mineralisation found in the ore body, rather than with a view to furnishing a complete cross-section of it; and the examination has been carried out with a view to ascertaining (1) the nature, extent and association of the arsenic, antimony and possibly bismuth, minerals in the ore, (2) the mode of occurrence of silver in the ore, and (3) whether galena and sphalerite occur in minute forms well below the sIzes readily observed in hand specimens.Analyses of the January to June, 1944, mill head composites show that the proportions of the elements Ag, As, Sb and Bi in the ore are as follows:Ag 0.000013 = 0.35 oz./tonAs 0.024Sb 0:002Bi 0.0005The copper content of the mill heads ranges from 3.5% to 4.75%, the lead content from 0.03% to 0.08,% and the zinc content from 0.09% to 0.23%.MINERAL COMPOSITIONThe specimens range from massive sulphide ore, consisting of areas of chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and rarely sphalerite, from 1 to 3 cm. across, to fragments of extremely finely banded pyritic shale in which no minerals other than pyrite are visible. The gangue associated with the massive sulphides is chiefly dolomite, and sometimes white quartz. The pyritic shale fragments show evidence of shearing and faulting on a micro-scale, the fractures sometimes being filled with sulphides and vein minerals.The ore minerals found in the polished sections are pyrite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, valleriite, chalcostibite, galena, dyscrasite, jamesonite, magnetite, gold, graphite and rutile.Pyrite (FeS2)Pyrite occurs chiefly in two forms according to whether deposition took place along the bedding planes or along the intersecting faults and fractures. The disasters between 1920 and 1979 in coal mines in Queensland and New South Wales due to underground fire, gas or coal dust explosion or to gas or coal outbursts, have been assessed. The evidence relating to disasters caused by gas explosion points strongly to divergence from safe mining practice as the main cause. There is a need for greater training and education of personnel, closer analysis of gas reports, better monitoring and testing procedures, improved ventilation standards and a policy where safe working practice is actively encouraged. Conditions in the New South Wales occurrences of gas explosion were similar to those at Collinsville, Queensland in that dykes, igneous sills, burnt out coal and faulting were common to all. Information on outbursts indicates that contributing factors were intrusions, depth of cover, fault zones and other geological disturbances, methods of work, pressure and type of gas.

On the first of October 1991 two significant pieces of legislation came into force. Both of these are relevant to the allocation and use of minerals in New Zealand . They are the Crown Minerals Act 1991 and the Resource Management Act 1991.   The full legal implications of these is not fully known because the Planning Tribunal and the superior courts have not as yet had to deal with them in any detail. However, the thrust of the legislation is clear and it is appropriate to give an overview of how the statutes will operate in tandem if you are seeking to pursue or oppose any prospect, exploration or mining of Crown Minerals in New Zealand.

IN all wet concentration processes it is of primary importance to determine to what degree the crushing must be carried in order to obtain the maximum profit per ton of ore milled.To effect a clean separation, either by gravity or flotation treatment, between either one valuable sulphide from another, or a sUlphide from the gangue, the ore must have been subjected to grinding to such an extent that the particles to be separated are completely liberated from each other.Insufficient crushing will result in either an incomplete separation of the sulphides from each other, and thus a loss of the one sulphide in the other, or else a loss of the valuable sulphide in the gangue.This being so, the question arises whether the added cost of extra crushing would be economically warranted by the increased recovery consequent on such a step.

Alluvial gold is an ideal exploration tracer to bedrock source and indicator of bedrock mineralisation style because: (i) gold occurs in a wide range of deposit types, (ii) primary composition is sensitive to style of mineralisation, and (iii) it is a heavy resistate mineral that is readily preserved and easily sampled. In regional exploration of the Central Ranges of Irian Jaya, alluvial gold mineralogy has been applied to maximise the information return from panned concentrate sampling and to focus exploration effort. Primary gold is a solid solution of Au+Ag¦Cu¦Hg, ¦ trace Pd, Te, and Sb. In general Ag¦Hg increase and Cu decreases with inferred decreasing temperature of formation, and gold from particular mineralisation styles has signature compositions that can be used as indicators of bedrock mineralisation type. Furthermore, the abundance of alluvial gold is an indicator of the economic potential of a catchment. The convergent continental-oceanic plate geology of the Central Ranges is conducive to a wide range of mineralisation styles. Mineralogy of gold in ophiolite, skarn, porphyry, mesothermal vein and possible VHMS environments is characterised from alluvial and bedrock samples, and the use of gold mineralogy in prospecting at regional scale through prospect definition to drilling is demonstrated.

The Wolgan Seam of the Upper Permian IlIawarra Coal Measures of the Western Coalfield of New South Wales consists of high volatile, low sulphur, medium hard coking coal with high fluidity. This seam, 1·8-2·4m thick, in the Wolgan area, dips gently at 1°_20 ENE and lies at 160-440m below the deeply dissected surface of the western margin of the Blue Mountains plateau.A detailed study of the deposit has revealed that the Wolgan Seam consists of four main coal plies separated by three distinct stone bands. Each of these subunits is lenticular and displays individual physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics which exhibit distinct spatial distribution patterns across the area. Most noticeable is the presence of long linear ESE-trending zones of low ash - high volatiles - high fixed carbon - high fluidity which delineate the major distributary pattern within the deltaic environment of coal formation.This seam contains some of the highest fluidity coal in the world.The Wolgan area, close to the western margin of the Sydney Basin, is characterized by:I. a regional, closely spaced, homogenous joint fracture pattern dominated by an orthogonal pair set trending 3400 and 0700, to which the face- and butt-cleat directions respectively of the Wolgan Seam are sub-parallel, and2. a more widely spaced, heterogenous, cross-cutting pattern of regional structural fractures. Zones of bad roof conditions are probably associated with these lineaments which are subvertical and trend in three majordirections, viz., 005°,035° and 115°.

Golden Cross is a volcanic-hosted, low-sulfidation, epithermal Au-Ag deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield. Irrespective of the rock type (andesite versus dacite), hydrothermally altered wallrocks are enriched in K, Rb, As and Sb around Au-Ag mineralised veins of the Empire vein system and stockwork. Sodium and Sr are strongly depleted around these veins, whereas Mg and Fe are locally depleted. Calcium and Si display mixed behaviour, varying from unchanged to depleted to enriched. Other elements including Al, Ti, Mn, Zr, Y, and Nb show little change or are immobile during hydrothermal alteration. Element enrichment and depletion trends are directly related to the degree of alteration and the alteration mineralogy. Addition of K and Rb and converse loss of Na and Sr in intensely altered wallrock surrounding veins corresponds to the replacement of igneous plagioclase by hydrothermal adularia. Sodium and Sr occur in moderately altered rocks on the margins or in æhard barsÆ that contain plagioclase. Locally, elevated Si concentrations and depletion of Mg adjacent to the Empire vein system reflects intense silicification of the wallrocks and the replacement of mafic minerals by quartz rather than by chlorite. The geochemical zonation patterns at Golden Cross are very similar to those at the McLaughlin deposit California, and shallow levels of the active Broadlands Ohaaki geothermal system. Therefore, determination of K, Na, Rb, Sr, and Ca enrichment and depletion patterns provides insight into alteration intensity and mineralogy that is complimentary to traditional trace element analysis of As, Sb, Hg, Au, Ag, Zn, and Pb used in the exploration of shallow level (< 500 m) epithermal Au-Ag deposits.

The increased focus on best practice environmental management has led to mining and mineral processing companies developing a variety of procedures to ensure that the environmental impacts of their operations are minimised, and that company managements are fully aware of these impacts and the policies and procedures established to ensure this process. Parallel to this, international standards for the development and implementation of environmental management systems are being promoted as necessary for companies to demonstrate their due diligence. Good environmental management systems should be built upon the systems already established within companies, and should ensure that the process of continual improvement is integral to their operation. An outline of the basic components of environmental management systems is provided, along with examples of the way various mining companies have implemented such systems. The benefits of best practice environmental management to mining companies are also considered.

Metal-rich slurries discharged from excess-enthalpy geothermal wells at Kawerau (NZ) indicate that an efficient ore precipitation mechanism operates in some feedzones. In our conceptual model, which takes into account the relative permeabilities of liquid and gas phases in boiling fluids, a metal-precipitating liquid phase is effectively immobilised along boiling fronts, leading to the formation of highly concentrated ore. Chemical equilibrium and heat/mass transport modelling demonstrate the general applicability of this conceptual model to hydrothermal eruption environments.

With some notable exceptions, marine placers located just below, or just above, present sea level, are responsible for much of today's production of detrital ilmenite, rutile, zircon, and other minerals of value. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the paleogeographic and paleo-oceanographic factors which may have determined the location of presently submerged marine placers. These factors include changes in sea level, burial by recent marine sediments, stream capture and other changes in drainage patterns, and recent changes in climate. Selected geologic situations in the Yellow Sea off the coast of Korea, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal, in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska, and in the Arabian Sea off the coast of India, will be used to illustrate the author's point of view.

To cope with varying raw material qualities and increasing prices for energy, a more frequent and accurate monitoring of the processing of iron ore became the focus in sinter plant operations. Traditionally, quality control in iron producing industries has relied on time-consuming wet chemistry or the analysis of the elemental composition. The mineralogy of a sinter that defines the properties and behaviour in the blast furnace is often not frequently monitored. One fast method to analyse the mineralogical composition of iron sinter, raw mixtures and iron ores is X-ray diffraction (XRD). Recently statistical methods such as similarity analysis or partial least square regression (PLSR) in combination with XRD raw data has become more and more popular in handling large amounts of data and correlating process-relevant parameters directly with an XRD measurement. PLSR can be used to correlate process parameters directly from the XRD pattern without investigating the mineral content. Hidden information that is present in the measurement but not determined with traditional methods can be used to improve the characterisation of the analysed materials.CITATION:König, U and Norberg, N, 2017. The Greymouth Coalfield contains New Zealand's greatest known resource of bituminous rank coal. The coals are of very high quality, with low ash and sulphur contents and a range of other properties that makes them desirable for a wide range of uses. In fact only a few producers around the world today can offer coals with such exceptional properties. This suggests that Greymouth coal has potential as a premium export trading commodity. These assertions have been largely confirmed by a comprehensive exploration drilling programme funded by Mines Division û Ministry of Energy between 1979 and 1984. The program, forming part of the NZ Coal Resources Survey, was carried out under contract by Lime and Marble Ltd. The drilling of 49 deep, predominantly cored, holes at 1000 m intervals over the coalfield has generated a vast amount of data. It has shown the existence of three major potentially minable coal deposits containing 233 x 106, 33 x 106 and 15 x 106 tonnes of coal in ground. Investigations have at this stage only identified targets and these estimates represent 'in ground' resources, not recoverable reserves. Recent geological studies as well as past and present mining have clearly highlighted the problems posed by the complexity of the coalfield geology. The coalfield lies within a mobile zone in the earth's crust known as the Paporoa Tectonic Zone, which has been active from at least mid-Cretaceous to the present time. Currently this factor poses the greatest obstacle to the determination of mining possibility of the, defined deposit and ultimately will strongly influence any future mining development. The Greymouth Coalfield has, however, had a long and eventful mining history spanning the last 120 years, where 32.5 x 106 tonnes of coal has been won from over 100 mines. In spite of the problems facing development, the large quantities and exceptional quality of the remaining coal will act as a strong inducement to persevere with this difficult but potentially valuable resource.

Although mining is an old industry its management is quite a new science, and its complications are now being recognised as demanding expert knowledge in many branches of technical and professional education. Not the least amongst these isaccountancy, for probably its most important problem is "How to control the expenditure." Unlike most businesses a mining company stands almost entirely in the light of a purchaser in the world's markets, and not as a seller, except say for product so the established and perfected systems of modern industries cannot be adopted for mining purposes. For this reason it has been left for late years to consider the matter seriously, and now a number of well-managed concerns have devised costs systems to suit their own requirements.Very little, however, has been published and even that is disjoined and difficult to make use of. Some of the costs systems in vogue, although elaborate and imposing, are not of very great value for keeping check on wasteful expenditure, or for displaying the commercial effect brought about 'by any particular change in practice, or by an addition or alteration to a portion of existing plant.
