The notes from which this paper has been prepared were set down at the time of the author's departure from Australia in 1935. Mr. Frank Forman, Government Geologist of Western Australia, who has very kindly read the paper in manuscript, affirms that the views here set forth are now accepted by most geologists. Thus, Forman's recent presidential address before the Royal Society of Western Australia (1937) mentions sediments in the Kalgoorlie Series "including banded jaspers and jaspilites."While it may, therefore, be superfluous to belabour the question further at this time, Mr. Forman has encouraged the author to publish this paper as a summary or both past and present views.To those specially interested in the subject of the paper, a study of pertinent Plates attached to Western Australian Geological Survey Bulletin No. 71, 1917, is suggested.The type of rock which is variously called "jasper bar," jaspilite, or "ferruginous quartzite" is familiar to all mining men who have worked in the West Australian goldfields.In its typical form it is a "striped" rock consisting of alternate layers of white or pinkish silica with red to brown bands of iron-bearing silica.In the course of geological work in many parts of Western Australia I studied exposures of jasper bar and was repeatedly impressed with the similarity of much of the material to the sedimentary "banded iron formation" of Canada. It was, therefore, a surprise to learn that the jasper bars were not generally regarded in Australia as sedimentary horizons. A combined reflection seismic and magnetic survey off the south coast of New South Wales has revealed six distinct reflection horizons within the Lower Triassic-Upper Permian sequence, and has enabled the upper part of the lllawarra Coal Measures to be mapped in considerable detail. Large magnetic anomalies in the eastern half of the survey area appear to originate in the Gerringong Volcanic Sequence which forms the magnetic basement in the survey. Small residual anomalies in the western half of the area can be correlated with small scale faulting and folding in the upper part of the llawarra Coal Measures, as revealed by the seismic reflection survey.A synclinal axis striking at approximately 55° has been mapped near the western margin of the survey area, and areas of faulting and folding have been outlined by combined analysis of seismic and magnetic results.

The mineral composition and microtextures of a cubanite-rich sulphide ore are described and cubanite breakdown textures are illustrated. The occurrence of cubanite in macroscopic dimensions is featured.The origin of the ore is tentatively related to a composite ore fluid arising initially from an ultramalic source and extracting some metal components from an older granite mass along the margin of which the serpentine was emplaced. Some alternative possibilities as to origin are also mentioned.

Terramin Australia LimitedÆs Angas Lead and Zinc Mine operates in the unique and picturesque environment of Adelaide Hills, 60 km South East of the Adelaide city centre itself. The mine was granted approval for construction by the South Australian Government in April 2007 and the Process Plant was constructed and commissioned in July 2008. This paper outlines the background to the plant design and the approval process given the close proximity to the local town of Strathalbyn, with a major focus on the commissioning learnings from the Concentrator startup for future reference and a review of the operational performance of the Concentrator throughout the first year of successful production versus design and expectations.

Plant for the production of sulphuric acid from pyrites flotation concentrates was commissioned at Cockle Creek during 1956, to meet increasing demands for commercial acid and superphosphate. Pyrite was chosen as raw material because of the uncertain supplyposition of imported brimstone and the desirability of utilising domestic sulphur.Desulphurisation of the pyrite is performed by two 40-ton per day roasters of the Turbulent Layer type operated under licence from the Badische Analin and Soda Fabrik (B.A.S.F.) organisation. These units are the first of their kind commissioned in the southernhemisphere. Pyrite is fed to the roasters in the as-received un-dried condition. Waste heat steam production is coupled with electricity generation within the plant. Sulphur dioxide is produced at comparatively high strengths and cleaned by conventional cyclone and hot electro-filter equipment.The acid unit has a capacity of 100 mono tons of sulphuric acid per day and includes cooling and wash towers, mist precipitators, a single stage drying tower, 4-pass oxidation section and absorption system.INTRODUCTIONSulphuric acid has been manufactured at Cockle Creek Works since 1913, when the first chamber nitration plant was commissioned. The raw material was brimstone roasted in Herreschoff furnaces. Since that time three additional chamber units have been constructed and have produced acid from brimstone, zinc concentrates, pyrites and -spent oxide, according to changing economic and supply factors.Three chamber units are still in operation. Contact processes have become increasingly important since the first Schroder-Grillo unit was commissioned in 1923. Six of these 5-ton per day units were operating in the mid-thirties, but have since been demolished. Draft tube circulators are now widely used instead of Pachucas for suspension of slurries in large tall tanks.Precipitators in the alumina industry are an example.Draft tube/tank diameter ratio is critical. Two independent criteria are given for optimum ratio. The hydraulic and energy relationships are defined. These require an impeller of very high specific speed. For a stable and efficient system the impeller should have aerofoil blades with a pitch angle which decreases from hub to tip.The draft tube must be matched to the impeller with inlet baffles above the impeller and flow control vanes below it. Tip recirculation must be suppressed. The tank itself should have a filleted flat bottom.Such a system exhibits the behaviour of axial flow devices with the characteristic undesirable behaviour at low flow.Installed and operating power requirements depend critically on hydraulic design and to a lesser extent on speed reducer efficiency.The problems of re-suspension have been overcome by a patented slot system which also improves behaviour at low flow to permit a more economic design. A number of other practical operating considerations are also discussed.

A study of the accessory opaque iron-titanium oxide minerals of the Oiles Complex, central Australia, was an Important complement to an investigation of the magnetic properties of the Complex. These minerals constitute no more than 10 per cent of the rocks sampled, and generally less than 1 per cent of the ultramafic rocks ("magnetite" concentrations were not sampled for magnetic investigation).Titanomagnetite is the main opaque mineral present, although ilmenite exsolution has been widely developed. High-temperature oxidation of these produced mainly titanohematite, pseudobrookite and rutile. Both exsolution and high-temperature oxidation developed along specific crystallographic directions (along {111}), and in Irregular patches. Low-temperature oxidation is generally not well-developed, indicating the small degree of weathering in the rocks sampled.Although the Oiles Complex is layered, no apparent overall preferred orientation of the iron-titanium oxide minerals was observed, other than crystallographically controlled alignment of very fine grains within pyroxene crystals. Other textural features of the opaque oxides are restricted to symplectic intergrowths mainly with the ferromagnesian silicates.

Solutions of copper(II) sulphate in acidified aqueous acetonitrile leach copper from copper-lead matte derived from the drossing of lead with sulphur to produce solutions of copper(I) sulphate. The reactivity of the matte constituents towards copper(II) sulphate is Cu2S> PbS > CuS > > Pb. According to the leach conditions, part or ,all of the copper may be leached 'leaving a residue of CuS/PbS, or S/CuS/PbS04, or S/PbS04, to be recycled to the lead smelter. Complete extraction of the copper requires leaching with oxygen which occurs under mild conditions in the presence of acetonitrile and sulphuric acid in water. Copper is selectively recovered as a pure product by electrochemical or thermal disproportionation of copper(I) sulphate solutions. A notional process is proposed.

The Takasima Coal Mines comprise four islands near the entrance to Nagasaki Harbour, and are owned and worked by the Mitsu Bishi Company.There are several unusual features in the occurrence and working of these coal seams, the steep angle of "dip," the numerous seams of good coal separated by hundreds of feet of sedimentary rocks, the extensive faulting of the strata, and the way in which the coal is won, when so little surface is available for works, and where there is the ever present danger of subsidence of the roof and consequent flooding of the workings by the ocean. The author trusts that short notes on these few points will be of interest to members.The Islands are named respectively Hasima (Extreme Island), Nakanosima (Middle Island), Takasima (High Island), and Yokosima, and are situated about one mile from the main land.

INTRODUCTIONThe faults described in the following paper are of a somewhat unusual character, and have presented a serious problem both in the development and mining of many ore-bodies on the Eastern side of the Boulder Belt. They are mentioned only briefly in the literature of the field, but were observed by, both Stillwell (1)t and Gustafson (2), and have been studied by other geologists and operators in various parts of the "Belt." Their effect on the lodes of Hamilton Section, Great Boulder Mine, was described by King (3) in 1937, and, during recent years, they have been encountered in most of the Great Boulder workings extending east of the Boulder Dyke.Although this paper is based mainly on a study of faulting and development problems on the Great Boulder mine, the general conclusions reached may be applicable to the solution of similar faulting problems in other mines throughout the field.In order to arrive at a clear understanding of the somewhat complicated relationships which the east-dipping faults bear to the lode systems it will be necessary to give a brief outline of the salient geological and structural features of the "Belt" before proceeding to describe the faults themselves.2. GENERAL GEOLOGYThe most recent descriptions of the geology of Kalgoorlie are those by Stillwell (1) and Gustafson (2) and the reader is referred to these as representing the basis of current knowledge of the geology of the field.The Boulder Belt is comprised of a central core of altered quartz dolerite which is flanked on either side by fine grained greenstones and lavas, usually referred to as the calc schists. Down the centre of the quartz dolerite mass there is an infolded bed of slate (2, p. 105) which has been intruded in lit par lit fashion by albite porphyry; the composite body of slate and porphyry so formed is known as the "Boulder Dyke." Numerous smaller porphyry dykes intrude both the quartz dolerite and the calc schist; these vary in composition and range from chloritised hornblende porphyrites to albite porphyries.The whole of the rock assemblage has been subjected tG a considerable amount of folding, faulting, shearing and fracturing, the greater part of which took place before the formation of the lodes.

In New York City, on the walls of the library of the United Engineering Societies are these words:"Engineering-the art of organising and directing men and of controlling the forces and materials of nature for the benefit of the human race," but who, reading the schedules of even our best engineering schools, would infer that engineering is an art or that it should always havejn mind the benefit of the human race? While it must be remembered that our engineering schools exemplify the British cult of the amateur, that cult which lets men who have never attended a lecture on "Education" or perhaps nevereven read a book on it, become enginering teachers by profession (and so educators by inference), the root of the matter is to be found in the fact that our educational aims, and consequently our educational practice, seem suited much better to the position engineering held in the community in 1900 than to the position it holds to-day. This civilization of ours has developed, !;loth for good and for ill, into one based largely on engineering achievement; technical progress is so continuous and so rapid that thevalue of descriptive knowledge of current practice is ever lessening; enough must be imparted to make the young graduate immediately employable, and this amount is sufficient for illustrating the principles on which practice is based and on which its advance depends, but the young graduate's technical progress depends much less on his having acquired additional knowledge than on his ability to acquire knowledge, so, paradoxically, the more useful knowledge there is availabJe the less of it the student should be taught.Less conspicuous but fully as important is the enlargement of the field of work of engineering graduates, especially its extension to the initiating of policies and to the broader problems of administration. At present the road to such positions lies normally through a considerable period of professional work, but it is by no means unlikely that the field will soon include much that requires little professional expel'ience. The area around Big Bell was actively explored and sporadically mined for gold from 1904 onwards. The lease was named Big Bell in 1913. The property became established as a major mining centre with the development of the Big Bell underground mine in 1936. Mining operations commenced in late 1937 and ceased in January 1955, after milling 5.56 million tonnes of ore and producing nearly 21 tonnes of gold. In 1969 Australian Consolidated Minerals Ltd (A.C.M.) acquired the deposit then explored it alone and in joint venture until the current joint venture agreement with a subsidiary of Placer Pacific Limited (PPL) was negotiated in 1984. Following exploration and evaluation of near surface mineralisation, and a reassessment of the remnant pillars underground, the concept of a large open pit in conjunction with an underground mine evolved. The feasibility study was completed in October 1987, and the decision to go ahead was formally announced on 2nd December 1987. Placer Dome Technical Services Ltd were contracted to be the Project Managers, commencing construction on site early in January 1988 and handing the plant over to the operators 13 months later. The capital cost of the project at handover was estimated to be $133 million. The operating team commenced pre-production stripping of the open pit on 1st May 1988. By 31st January 1989 almost 16.0 million tonnes had been stripped and 350,000 tonnes of ore stockpiled.

The paper outlines events at the Collinsville State Coal Mine, Queensland, leading to the practice of full face multiple shotfiring in bord and pillar development places. The 1954 disaster is referred to, and factors involved in simultaneous shotfiring in coal are discussed. Promising preliminary multiple shotfiring tests at the Colliery are described, as well as the resulting routine measures adopted, and the changes involved. The subsequent inducing of two outbursts under safe conditions by remote multiple shotfiring is given as justification for the changes made.INTRODUCTIONFollowing a disastrous instantaneous outburst (1.0.) of coal and gas at the Collinsville State Coal Mine in 1954, the necessity for inducer shotfiring for the control of possible further outbursts was established. However this mine, immediately classified as gassy after the 1954 outburst, is subject to the general restrictions pertaining to gassy mines which at present preclude the use of inducer shotfiring due particularly to the non-existence of a permitted exploder for more than six shots, and further, because permitted multipleexploders are not designed for remote firing through long lengths of cable. This situation was met by arresting or reducing progress in the production places, thereby reducing the danger of outbursts while means were being considered to achieve overall maximum safety.In August 1957 two full faces were successfully blasted in experimental simultaneous rounds. The Bulli and Wongawilli Seams, the two principal sources of coking coal for the Port Kembla steelworks of Australian Iron & Steel Pty. Ltd., vary in rank and in type over the Southern and South Western Coalfields.The Bulli Seam, ranging widely in type, produces coke varying from weak to strong. The Wongawilli Seam, more consistent in type, produces coke of more consistent strength, but considerably less strong than that from the best Bulli Seam coal.Plans of seam variation show the regional trends in rank and type for each seam.The strongest coke is derived from coal containing between 45 and 55 per cent vitrinite, m.m.f. This is obtainable from the Bulli Seam in a zone embracing Bulli and Appin collieries.A satisfactory correlation is achieved between vitrinite content and coke stability and hardness, enabling prediction of coke strength for Southern Coalfield coals.The use of vitrinite reflectance, as an indicator of rank, in addition to type to predict coke strengths is at present hampered by lack of data, particularly in the South Western Coalfield. Nevertheless, data available at present allow the use of both variables and give better correlations with coke strengths than type alone.A spread of comprehensive data across both coalfields will enable advance assessment of cokes produced from coals having known rank and type. Blending to a ranktype specification for optimum coke strengths would allow the best use of the coal reserves of the coalfields.

Common brattice cloths in use in Australian coal mines are compared by permeability measurements. The respective advantages of twill weave and tarpauling* weave cloths are listed, and the improvements to be obtained in the ventilation of a mine by using tarpauling cloths instead of the commonly used twill cloths are stressed. Plastic cloths are widely used overseas and are briefly discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe onset of extensive full-scale mechanization in Australian coal mines during the past few years has increased attention given to the ventilation of working places. Many inadequacies of the present system have been brought to light and not the least of these is connected with the use of brattice cloth, both in directing the flow of air around the face and in acting as a temporary sealing mechanism. A well-constructed line of brattice will only provide fair ventilation for a distance of 100 ft. Beyond this point the volume or air reaching the face falls off rapidly.Some of the shortcomings associated' with the use of brattice cloths are:1. Hurried installation, necessitated by a rapid advance, often results in poor workmanship with, consequently, an excessively high leakage rate.2. High places caused by falls of roof are difficult and time-consuming to seal.3. Curtains, in lines of brattice crossing transport routes, are difficult to maintain.4. Lines of brattice interfere with rock-dusting and clean-up of fine coal.5. Repair and maintenance of brattice consumes much...

In addressing the need for non-degree tertiary training, let us examine some recent reviews of engineering and geoscience education. The Finniston Report (1) criticised the formation of engineers in the UK and stated that this was largely due to the narrow British conception of engineering as a branch of applied science which militates against an effective marriage between theory and application. It also criticised the system for not giving students sufficient grounding in the synthesis of technical, human and financial considerations within their undergraduate courses. As we all know, this report has led to the restructuring of engineering education in the UK. More recently, a Review of the Discipline of Engineering was carried out in Australia by a committee chaired by Professor Sir Bruce Williams (2). The report stated that: Australia has a fairly good system of engineering education that should be made better. more should be done to develop the communication skills of both staff and students. more attention should be paid to changes in engineering practice and the human element in technology. there is a serious shortage of state of the art equipment in most engineering schools. female enrolments in engineering courses should be increased from the current level of about 7% to 20% by 1997. employers should develop a better understanding of the need for continuing education. staff in engineering schools should develop closer relations with employers of engineers. higher education institutions with engineering schools should give financial and other inducements to staff to increase the proportion of study leave or professional development leave spent working as engineers in the business sector. there is considerable room for improvements in the teaching process and in the development of evaluation schemes for assessing the teaching contributions of staff. In its recent report to the Council of the Institution of Engineers, Australia, the Task Force on Engineering Education(3) makes the following points: managerial, entrepreneurial, professional and interpersonal skills should be introduced and integrated into the undergraduate courses but studied in depth as part of continuing education. the continuing education policy of the Institution should be promoted and strengthened with all engineers required to pursue continuing education. the Institution should develop a comprehensive guide to continuing education available from universities, colleges and other public and private sector organisations.

Treatment of Gold-Bearing Oxide High-Clayish Ores The analysis of modern state of treatment technologies of gold-bearing oxide high-clayish ores showed that the main method applied both in Russia and abroad is sorption leaching and heap leaching with preliminary granulating. The use of any of these processes depends on many factors including average gold grade, site and area of a deposit, clay content and etc. The two processes are often used at the same deposit. In this case, rich ores are treated according to a plant technology, poor ores and ores with cut-off grade are treated with heap leaching. Both technologies possess their own advantages and disadvantages. A plant technology is characterised by high recovery with higher capital and operating costs at the same time. Lower recovery during heap leaching can be attributed to an unstable quality of ore granulating due to both technological and weather conditions. In case of poor high-clayish ores, the use of a combined ore treatment is possible and profitable. It includes the ore disintegration and a clayish fraction treatment by using a heap leaching. In this case, capital and operating costs reduce in comparison with a plant technology and the recovery increases in comparison with heap leaching. Sometimes it reaches a plant recovery. These ores possess special features. As a rule, gold is associated with ore fraction, so it liberates readily from the association with ore ore-forming minerals even with relatively coarse grinding explain their high solution velocity in a hydrometallurgical cycle. Clayish ores are characterised by high sorption activity to gold cyanide complexes as well as extremely low velocity of filtration and thickening of slimic pulps at the same time. The paper describes the options of oxidised high-clayish ores treatment, such as, a plant technology (PIP and CIP process), heap leaching and a combined technology (disintegration, heap leaching of a crystalline fraction and sorption cyanidation). The obtained results were used when selecting a treatment technology and during construction of a plant for oxidised high-clayish ores treatment.

I am wearing two hats today. When the invitations went out to participate in this forum, two were received in the head office of the Department of Lands and Survey - one addressed to the Director-General of Lands and one to the Chairman of the National Parks Authority. It seemed logical that as the department is responsible to the Government for the administration of the National Parks Act 1952, we should respond by providing one speaker to cover both the department's interests and those of the National Parks Authority. I hope, however, that this will not blur the clear distinction which exists in the context of the mineral industry between Crown land on the one hand administered by the department for the statutory Land Settlement Board and national parks and allied reserves on the other hand which are the responsibility of the National Parks Authority.

In preparing this paper, the writer hopes to achieve two main objects. Firstly, an indication of the desirable features of coke from the viewpoint of a blast furnace operator should be of assistance and value to those connected with coal and coke research, coal mining, the manufacture of coke and the production of iron. Secondly, it is hoped that the conclusions and opinions expressed herein, which are known to be of a controversial nature, will promote some discussion and thought. In this way, other workers may see fit to contribute and enlarge our general knowledge of Australian coke and its behaviour in blast furnaces.Those properties of coke that are considered to be of importance to blast furnace operation will be examined. Although broadly speaking, the composition and characteristics of coke are inherent in the coals used, any special features of coal preparation and carbonization that affect the resultant coke will be discussed. An attempt will also be made to indicate the effect on blast furnace operation of significant irregularities in these properties.THE FUNCTION OF COKE IN A BLAST FURNACECoke has four important functions in a blast furnace:1. To reduce the oxides of iron and other elements to metal and to provide the carbon absorbed by the iron.2. To supply the necessary heat for the process.3. To provide an open supporting structure in which the descending ore and limestone lie exposed to the action of the ascending gas.4. To provide voidage in the bottom of the furnace, so that iron and slag can accumulate in the hearth.
