The size by size batch flotation behaviour of copper activated sphalerite from synthetic mixtures with quartz was determined. In terms of recovery of sphalerite, the size fractions could be grouped into coarse, intermediate, and fine ranges. The behaviour of the coarse and fine ranges was significantly poorer than that of the intermediate range in both the extent and rate of flotation.Each size fraction had a fast and a slow floating component.The main effect of changing the copper sulphate addition was to alter the proportion of any size fraction which was fast floating. No correlation could be found, between the amount of copper on the spha:lerite andeither the flotation rate of the mineral or the amount of copper added to the system. It was found that fine particles did not appear to consume greatly disproportionate amounts of copper sulphate during conditioning. A modified conditioning procedure was found to lead to a higher rate of flotation and recovery of coarse sphalerite and to make poss1ble substantial savings of copper sulphate.

Gold recovered on the strikes at the Central Norseman mill, Norseman, Western Australia, has an approximate assay fineness of 850. Bullion recovered from the cyanide plant at the mine is of much lower value, and occasionally its assay fineness has been as low as 250. This indicates either that the fine gold particles in the ore consist of an alloy richer in silver than the coarse particles or else that a silver mineral, as well as the gold, is dissolved by the cyanide solutions.It had been observed at the mine that the amount of silver in the bullion appeared to increase when galena appeared to be more abundant in the stoped ore. Interest was, therefore, attached to the possible occurrence of a silver mineral associated with galena and, at the same time, soluble in cyanide.Four specimens of ore from different horizons in the mine were collected by the mine staff for examination as to whether any marked difference in the fineness of gold was apparent on a polished surface and for determination of the silver minerals. As the Norseman ore-body is a quartz reef containing a very small percentage of sulphide, the specimens were selected either because they cont;:lined free gold or because they were, relatively rich in sulphides. They were obtained from the following localities at the Phoenix shaft.1. Level 16, section 28.2. Level 16, section 31.3. Level 8, section 31.4. Level 14, section 38.Specimens Nos. 1 and 2 were thus obtained from different positions at the same mining horizon, while specimens Nos 2 and 3 were obtained from different levels in the same vertical section of the mine.All the specimens consist of quartz characterized by thin, discontinuous seams of sericite and the presence of a little ankerite. Gold and sulphides tend to be localized along these seams, but particles of gold and sulphides are also scattered throughout areas of white quartz. This scattered distribution of the sulphides in relatively wide areas of quartz has involved the preparation of two or more polished sections from each specimen.The outcome of the microscopical examination of these specimens has been to determine that there is no appreciable variation in the colour of the polished particles of gold and, therefore, no marked difference in the amount of silver alloyed with the coarse and fine particles. The presence of small quantities of the tellurides sylvanite, hessite and altaite has been revealed, and found to vary in abundance with the abundance of galena.

NZ Steel's flushing slag typically contains 1.2 per cent V203. Extraction of vanadium from powdered slag using a salt (NaCI or Na2CO3) roast/leach process was investigated. With NaCl, optimum extraction conditions were a charge containing 10 per cent NaCI, roasting in air at 875°C for 4 hours, followed by leaching in dilute H2SO4. Extractions were typically 30-50 per cent. NaCI roasting did not chemically attack the slag; the phase transformations that occurred were due to high temperature oxidation. Slag particle size had a significant effect on extraction.Optimum conditions for extracting vanadium by Na2C03 roasting were 20 per cent Na2CO3 in the charge and roasting in air for 3-4 hours at 850-875°C followed by water leaching.Na2CO3 roasting involved chemical attack that resulted in the formation of perovskite (CaTiO3) and carnegieite (NaAISiO4).The extent of vanadium extraction depended on the amount of Na2CO3 added and the original slag SiO2 content.Compared to the separate roasting treatments, simultaneous treatment with NaCI and Na2CO3 gave lower vanadium extraction, while requiring considerably higher roasting times and temperatures.

The Aberfoyle Tin Mine lies on a wide sloping bench about 2,000-2,500 ft. above sea level, at Rossarden, 14 miles north of Avoca, in north-eastern Tasmania. The quartz-cassiterite veins were discovered in 1916, but mining did not begin until 1926. Trenching revealed seven small tin-bearing veins within a width of 57 ft. of Palaeozoic slates and sandstones, and it was assumed that the mineralization extended beneath the adjacent cover of Permian strata, but the presence of the main vein system (the 26 Vein System) was not suspected until the Aberfoyle Fault was discovered late in 1928.The mine has now been developed on thirteen levels, to a depth of 1,350 ft. The lower limit of economic mineralization appears to lie at about the ll-level, which is 1,060 ft. vertically below the concealed outcrop of the main veins. During the course of the major research in the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne into the creep characteristics of lead and .its dilute alloys, it has been the practice to prepare the majority of test specimens from rolled strip. From time to time during the progress of the work, certain variables involved in. the rolling of the experimental ingots have been investigated. It is proposed to collect together in this paper the results of these experiments. Some general features relating to the type of deformation produced have been discussed in a previous paper.While it is admitted that the conditions prevailing through this work differ' in some respects from those of industrial rolling practice, it is felt that many of the factors investigated have an important practical significance. A procedure was developed for recovering metal values from copper-smelter fume. The fume is first leached to neutrality with dilute sulphuric acid to obtain a solution of zinc sulphate containing a low level of impurities. The tailings from this leach are treated with hydrochloric acid in two stages, in which tin and zinc are quantitatively leached and recovered as a tin concentrate and a zinc sulphatelzinc chloride solution.About 80 per cent of the lead sulphate is converted into lead chloride, which can be recovered as a pure product.Data on the effect of temperature, acid concentration, aeration, and solid/liquid ratios on the hydrochloric acid leach are presented, and the fate of the most important metals during the recovery process is described. Alternative treatments of the tailings from the neutral sulphuric acid leach were briefly investigated.

THE object of the present paper is to give a brief description of the metallurgical process followed by the Grand Junction Co, and the results obtained therefrom. All figures quoted are from the actual working of the plant over a period of six months from January to June, 1910. The short ton of 2000 lb. is used by the company. Its gold is valued at 84s. per oz. fine, silver at 2s. per oz. fine. The ore consists essentially of a gangue of quartz and calcite, with 8 to 10%sulphide-pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, and traces of arsenic and antimony. The colmtry-rock is a highlyaltered dacite. Small stringers of highly-mineralized ore penetrate the footwall of some of the lodes, forming a valuable stockwerk up to 3 ft. in thickness. In stoping, this is mined with the well defined lode, thus bringing into the mill at times a considerable quantity of hard country-rock. The gold exists in an exceedingly fine state of division, consequently rendering it necessary to grind very fine to obtain a satisfactory extraction.

During the latter part of 1937 consideration was given to the construction of a; local smelting plant for producing blister copper. Previously copper concentrates had been shipped to the United States of America. The proposition had the advantages of a saving in cost of realization, quicker financial return and reduced dependence on overseas shipping.The smelter was designed by the existing staff, who had difficulty in obtaining data on small plants, particularly on the reverberatory furnace. Construction was started in March, 1938, and the reverberatory was blown in on January 16th, 1939. One roaster had been operating for several weeks prior to this date.While results and operating technique on this new departure in small-scale smelting are barely beyond the experimental stage, it is felt that the experience gained to this time should be recorded to help fill the obvious gap in published information covering plants of this type.At present there are three copper smelters operating in Australia; the other two plants are equipped with blast furnaces.LOCATIONThe new smelter is situated in a position convenient to the concentrator and to the power plant. The Ediacara mineral field is classified as a Mississippi Valley type deposit with stratiform mineralization near the base of the Cambrian beds. Mineral deposition was contemporaneous with sedmentation and reerystallization, and mobilization took place after lithification of the sediments. Several mechanisms of deposition were possible.INTRODUCTIONThe Ediacara mineral field is located in the Mt. James Range approximately 300 miles north of Adelaide, about 12 miles west of Beltana railway siding and 10 miles east of Lake Torrens. It is isolated geographically from similar deposits of equivalent age and environment in the Flinders Range Province (Fig. 1). The climate may be described as semi arid with high summer temperatures and frequent dust storms. Occasional thunder storms are the main source of rain in the summer months.The exact date of discovery is unknown, but is believed to be about middle of the last century. Ulrich (1872) was the first geologist to report on the field. At that time only the southern portion of the field had been prospected (and abandoned). Although the prospects did not appear encouraging Ulrich advised prospecting of the shales and testing beneath the limestone.In 1888, Rosewarne, an Inspector of Mines, visited the Southern Workings and queried whether they were connected with some lode at deeper level or were merely bedded deposits. The first geological map with sections was drawn by H.Y.L. Brown (Brown 1892).Brown recognized three principal rock formations as dolomitic sandstone, kaolinised shales and sandstone, and quartzites and sandstone in descending order. The upper amphibolite-grade mctasediments of thc rinaroo area, North Queensland, form part of a regional aurcole to the large Tinaroo Batholith and are the stratigraphic equivalents of the Hodgkinson Formation of gencrally low metamorphic grade. There is no evidence of any lithological unconformity.The higher grade metasediments have a more complex deformation history than is typical for thc surrounding region and this may bc due to one or a combination of two factors; an additional strain componcnt associated wilh the intrusion of Ihe Tinaroo Batholith, or a more marked finite strain response to the overall regional stress field within hotter. more ductile rocks.Four deformational events can be characterized within Ihc Tinaroo Area. Close to Ihe Tinaroo Batholith D1 and D2, arc so strongly developed that they disrupl the continuily of Ihe original Iithological layering. In the aureole region, D1 is strongly overprinted and its original fabric intensity is obscured, but both D2 and D3 display a mappable decrease in intensity away from the granite margin. These three deformations occurred during Carboniferous or early Permian time. D4 is later and only patchily developed.The broad, moderate pressure metamorphic aureole surrounding the Tinaroo Batholith is a typical of the CairnsCooktown group of Permo-Carboniferous granitoids. which usually develop narrow, lower pressure contact aureoles. Two periods of metamorphism are distinguishable. The first reached peak temperatures somewhat greater than 520°C, the second temperatures around 620-630° C immediately adjacent to the granite contact.Several cale-silicate lenses containing scattered scheelite mineralization occur within the area. Scheelite appears to have crystallized at the same time as the cale-silicate minerals, its appearance coinciding with the intrusion of the Tinaroo Batholith. Unlike many "skarn-type" scheelite deposits, the scheelite-bearing cale-silicates are Fe-poor, with no positive correlation between total Fe and W.

Devitrification of a glassy volcanic ash equivalent to an alkaline trachyte in composition has resulted in the formation of an interstratified illite-montmorillonite with an 1:1\1 content of 1:4 as the principal clay mineral.A high concentration of potassium ions and a deficiency of magnesium ions favoured the formation of the potassium-bentonite.A poorly ordered mica mineral, equivalent to illite, was produced by weathering of potassic feldspar. The stability of parallel underground coal mine galleries and pillars have been investigated using two- and three-dimensional (3D) numerical stress analysis. Anisotropic horizontal in situ stresses and the direction of the excavations have been considered in the numerical analysis. The stability of the tunnels driven in a coal seam at various working depths has been investigated taking into account different strata conditions and then results from two- and three-dimensional numerical modelling studies were compared. Maximum principal stress components have been chosen in three various directions: vertical, parallel and perpendicular to the tunnel axis. Analysis have shown that in the anisotropic in situ stress field, the favourable direction of underground mine openings which have different strata conditions depend not only on the horizontal in situ stresses but also on the vertical in situ stresses. Furthermore, 3D numerical modelling studies have been carried out to investigate stability of multiple entry longwall panel gate roads and pillars with various width-to-length ratios (W/L). Results of the modelling studies have shown that the critical dimension of coal pillars depends on their width and the direction of maximum horizontal stresses.

A large body of porphyry-type copper mineralization occurs at Panguna in southern BougainviIle. It is associated with the intrusion of quartz diorite/granodiorite into andesites, particularly with the contact zone. Metasomatism of both intrusives and andesite resulted in the formation of biotite pseudomorphing hornblende and the veining of the resultant biotite diorite and biotitized andesite by quartz-chalcopyrite veins with pink orthoclase and dark biotite selvages, respectively.The orientation of intrusives and veins appears to be controlled by premineralization fault-joint patterns in the intruded andesitic Kieta Volcanics.

Very little has been written about the discovery and early history of prospecting of ironstone deposits in the Iron Knob-Middleback Range area of South Australia, the main source of supply of ironstone (hematite) for the Australian steel industry, and scanty though the record is, much of it is wrong or misleading.With the help of several people, to whom acknowledgement is made at the end of the paper, the writer has unravelled some of the story, but not the whole story. It is hoped that publication of this paper will stimulate interest in others, who may be able to supplement this account from family records, from the files of newspapers, or from archives.

Regions with extensive reserves of brown coal but with inadequate deposits of hard coal provide a particularly suitable field for the application of brown coal petrology.In fact, this discipline is indispensable where brown coal is to form the basis for high-quality products of upgrading. Both chemical and physical analyses are required in addition to the techniques employed in coal petrology, but it is the macropetrographic and the microscopic investigations that are of decisive and specific importance.Foremost among the methods of upgrading brown coal is briquetting. From the raw materials aspect the biochemical rank of coal (i.e. the type of deposit) and the coal variety (i.e. the lithotype) exert a marked influence on briquette strength. These are also the significant factors in the suitability of a brown coal for high temperature carbonization; here the demands on coal quality are even more exacting if adequately sintered and therefore high-strength lump chars are to be obtained. The principle applies also to the char from low temperature carbonization. There are close relationships between the tar yield and the remission of the coal.The reflectivity measurement therefore provides a rapid method for evaluating the suitability of a brown coal for low temperature carbonization. Similar correlations have been established between the content of extraction bitumen (raw montan wax) and the remission. Petrological investigations show that the quality of the coal bitumen is a function of the type of deposit and of the lithotype.

Traditionally, capital costs of major resource development projects have been estimated as a single amount to which a percentage accuracy has been assigned based on the method of preparation of the estimate, that is, on the amount of information available to develop the estimate.However, there is a growing recognition of the importance of a probabilistic approach to capital cost estimates, and of a more rigorous calculation of estimate accuracies and of the presentation thereof. Accuracies can be expressed with more certainty as a percentage of the estimate amount where the percentage represents one standard distribution on the probability curve for the capital cost of that specific project. Thus confidence levels can be stated for various estimated amounts - for example, it can be stated that there is an 85% chance that a stated amount will not be exceeded, or a 90% certainty that a (higher) amount will not be exceeded. Moreover, the right skewness of the probability distribution curve for most projects can be readily recognised and reflected in the evaluations. This enables senior executives and board members to have a clearer understanding of investment uncertainties, and the possible magnitude of commitments.

The new legislative regime applying to the mining industry has been in force for nearly two years. However the parameters for the permits required under the Crown. Minerals Act 1991 and the resource consents required under the Resource Management Act 1991 are still being established. Mining operators will benefit from participating in the development of policies and plans currently being formulated by local authorities. The Energy Legislation Amendment Bill currently before the House contains amendments to the Crown Minerals Act to clarify points of uncertainty and to reduce transaction costs where possible.

THE North Mount Lyell Mine is situated on the southern side of Mount Lyell at an altitude of 1750 ft. above sea-level. The average rainfall is 117 in., and there are generally several light falls of snow during the year. Despite the heavy rainfall, which is fairly evenly distributed over each of the twelve months, the climate is equable and not unduly rigorous, and, provided that the mine employee is suitably clad, it is only on exceptional days that he experiences any discomfort by becoming wet journeying to and from the mine.The majority of employes reside at Queenstown, and are conveyed by special trains to and from the top of the haulage, which is less than a mile from the mine. The mean surface temperature at the mine is 46° F., with a maximum variation from 26° F. to 85° F., the relative humidity generally being higher than in other districts. The rock temperature is 48° F. on the 200-ft. or Main Adit level, and 54° F, on the 1200-ft. level, giving a rise of 6° F. for 1000 ft. in depth.The ventilation of the mine is natural, the downcast being served by the Crown and Blocks shafts and the Crown mullock pass, and the upcast air is carried away from the workings by the Main shaft and the Nos. 1 and 2 mullock passes. The quantity of air circulating varies from 25,000 cub. ft. to 35,000 cub. ft. per minute, the greater quantity moving in the colder weather. The downcast air in traversing the wet shafts becomes saturated and enters the level at the rock temperature of 54° F. in winter and about 56° F. in summer, while temperature readings of the outcast air indicate that it varies very little.In the southern end of the mine the Blocks shaft downcast air upcasts through the different stopes, and their mullock passes, to the level above for each level to the 700-ft. level, where it passes to one of the main uptakes. A variety of environmental financial assurance instruments are in use across the globe. This paper reviews some of the more common forms currently used in New Zealand, Canada, USA and Australia. In order to be effective, the form of assurance instrument selected needs to be aligned with a countryÆs specific environmental objectives, geography and political climates and also allow for a healthy investment climate. Industry and Government both have a strong interest in ensuring financial assurance criteria meet these objectives.   Recently Golder Associates have been involved in financial assurance assessments for various mining and quarrying companies across the South Island. Multiple stakeholders and regulatory agencies can make the setting of effective and fair financial assurance criteria a complex exercise for both regulatory agencies and industry.  The author relates experience gained in assessing financial assurance under current New Zealand legislation (RMA, 1991), effectively dealing with issues such as ôdouble bondingö and overviews potential approaches to dealing with transitional issues for historic and existing operating mine sites.

When the mining and milling of 1100 copper orebody commenced at Mount Isa a satisfactory grade of copper concentrate was difficult to produce. The major concentrate contaminants were fine pyrite and silica, particularly in the minus 10 microns fraction. Studies of the 1100 orebody showed that much of the fine grained pyrite and a proportion of the silica present in the ore contained carbonaceous matter in the form of complete or partial rims and as internal carbon films disseminated throughout grains. The hydrophobic surface property of the carbonaceous material resulted in inherently flotable fine pyrite and siliceous particles.The addition of a 60:40 mixture of nigrosine and dextrine, initially to a prefloat concentrate of the inherently flotable carbonaceous material and finally to the total copper flotation feed, successfully controlled the flotation rates of the carbonaceous pyrite and silica. The objective of a 25 per cent Cu concentrate grade was then achieved without decreasing copper recovery.
