During the last 20 years the CSIRO Division of Manufacturing Technology, through its research and development program, has made a substantial contribution towards understanding the pressure die casting process. Much of this work focused on the hot chamber die casting of zinc, where the importance of achieving optimum flow of metal into the die cavity, combined with the correct thermal balance of the tool, is critical to the production of high quality castings. Having developed a fuller understanding of the heat and fluid flow occurring in the pressure die casting process, CSIRO sought to make this information available to the industry in a form where it could be readily used by die casting engineers. This led to the development of DMT-CASTFLOW and DMT-CASTHERM, two unique, PC-based, die design software packages. DMT-CASTFLOW provides facilities for designing running and gating systems while DMT-CASTHERM enables the die designer to optimise the cooling and/or heating requirements of the die. These two packages are now being sold internationally. This paper will describe some of the major features and benefits that can be derived by using DMT-CASTFLOW and DMT-CASTHERM panicularly in the design of zinc pressure die casting dies.

The Cassidy Shaft was sunk to access the Mount Charlotte and Reward Orebodies below the Flanagan Fault. The 1,184m deep shaft is concrete lined to 6.5m diameter for its full depth. The initial 590m was excavated by stripping into a 1.8m diameter borehole and hoisting the broken material through the existing mine. The remaining 594m was excavated by conventional shaft sinking methods. The shaft was sunk through 3 existing plats and an additional 8 plats cut. 1,800 tonnes of steel and 8 cables were installed during the furnishing of the 4 compartments.

Exploration in the vicinity of the abandoned Mt Coolon mine has shown that the shape and attitude of the quartz lode is controlled by the interaction between the lode and a converging syncline. Gold grades within the lode are enhanced along intersections with a welded ignimbrite, and decline rapidly where the lode intersects unwelded ignimbrite. Mineralogy and textures indicate the vein has an epithermal origin modified by a later intrusive event.

The Rosebery Mine on the west coast of Tasmania is a world class polymetallic base metal deposit, containing six major minerals: galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, gold, silver and pyrite. This resource has been exploited for nearly a century, yet a reliable estimate of the reserve continues to present a challenge.Over the past twenty years, the operation has changed from relatively low productivity cut and fill timber-support scraper mining, to higher productivity bulk mechanised open stoping. At the same time, economic constraints have changed and grades have fallen, which have increased the pressure to refine the resource/reserve estimating processes. This paper compares the restrictions of the polygonal section method of the past with the advantages of a kriged block model. The limitations of Mine Call Factors, the problems involved in converting decades of diamond drilling data on paper into a computer data base, and the effect of this new methodology at Rosebery, are described.

Froth flotation processes use different surface properties of the minerals to be sorted. In an aqueous environment the hydrophobic mineral attaches selectively to air bubbles and is lifted to the surface of a separation vessel, while the tailings settle towards its bottom. Besides the surface properties, the hydrodynamic conditions play an important role. With respect to the hydrodynamics the flotation process can be divided, for simplicity, in two sub-processes. The attachment of hydrophobic particles to air bubbles, the so-called mineralisation, demands a large number of collisions and therefore high turbulences. The phase separation however needs a deterministic movement of both the particle-bubbles-aggregates and the tailings particles and therefore a quiescent flow field. The optimisation of the overall process requires a separation of both sub-processes, especially when fine particles have to be sorted. In conventional mechanically agitated flotation cells both sub-processes take place in the same turbulent volume. For this reason they suffer from a decreasing selectivity with decreasing particle size. In flotation columns the mineralisation of air bubbles and the phase separation are performed in a quiescent environment. This results in high concentrate grades and at the same time in a very slow attachment kinetics, which must, especially for fine particles, be counterbalanced by a long residence time of the slurry.

A review of the factors controlling stope wall behaviour such as excavation geometry, rockmass strength, induced stress, ground support, blast damage and drill drive layout is undertaken. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of single lift stope geometries linked to vertical crater retreat are also analysed. Finally, key components of multiple lift stoping such as cut-off slots, production rings, stope undercuts and drawpoints are studied in detail.

A new technology has been introduced - the use of the High-Water Solidifying Material for providing pumped roadside supports to maintain a roadway for re-use in longwall retreating. As a gob edge support, its initial use at Hebi No. 1 Colliery was successful, providing acceptable performances in support and control of convergences and lateral closures of the gob-edge roadways. This acceptability applied to both first use and re-use when the roadway became a gateroad for the adjoining longwall, remaining stable throughout the associated loadings and convergences. The technology promises economic and social benefits.

Over the last three million years, porphyry and epithermal mineralisation in the Baguio Mineral District has been driven by calc-alkaline magmatism associated with the subduction of the South China Sea plate and the Scarborough seamounts beneath northern Luzon, Philippines. Coupled with extreme uplift and exhumation rates, mineralisation in the Baguio District has been responsible for the emplacement of over 922 million grams of gold. As one of the oldest intrusive bodies associated with the Baguio District, the Black Mountain Cu-Au deposit consists of at least five intrusive phases overprinted by potassic and propylitic alteration and sulfide mineralisation. Gold ore grades are low and molybdenum grades high with respect to other porphyry Cu-Au deposits in the Baguio Mineral District. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The history of the Ph-Cu-Zn mineralisation in the orthampton Block of Western Australia has been further investigated. It was hoped that (1) Rh-Sr studies on partially-remelled granulites, wall-rocks to the dolerite dykes, should date the dolerite intrusion, (2) Rh-Sr data on hydrothermally-altered dolerite should date the sulphide mineralisation, (3) Pb model ages on the galenas might provide an independent dating of the mineralisation, in addition to any geochemical information that might be derived. Only the second dating aim was fulfilled, but the Pb isotope data, when combined with the Rh-Sr data, have permitted deductions about U, Th and Pb abundance changes during the regional metamorphism, and about a possible source of the ore Pb. In detail the following has been found. (1) The partially-remelted granulitic wall rocks yield a scattered whole-rock Rh-Sr isochron which seems not to have been reset by the dyke intrusion (age 1037 ± 146 Ma, with initial Sr ratio 0.7171 ± 0·0054, MSWD = 111). This date agrees well with that reported previously for granulites from another locality; together theyestablish the time the metamorphic period closed. (2) The hydrothermally-altered dolerites yield a Rh-Sr whole-rock date 434 ± 16 Ma, with initial Sr ratio 0.7072 ± 0·0029 and MSWD = 31, taken as referring to the time of Ph-Zn mineralisation. This contrasts with a report of much older palaeomagnetic and K-Ar datings of the dolerite (not less than 550 Ma, possibly older) and suggests that neither the dolerites nor their heat have had any connection with the mobilisation of the Pbscavenging solutions. (3) The Pb isotope ratios of galenas from the ores yield a well-correlated regression which is not amenable to any of the model-age calculations. (4) The Pb-isotopic trends negate any genetic connection between dolerite and mineralisation, but the country-rock granulites could be the Pb source. (5) Combination of the Rh-Sr dates and the Pb data in a "simultaneous isochrons" construct permits the inference of major losses from the system during the regional metamorphism, in the order U>Pb>Th, with substantial homogenisation of the remaining Pb. This left a wide range in local UlPb and Th/U among the source rocks which eventually were scavenged by the mineralising solutions. (6) These geochemical deductions are shown to be compatible with previously-published information on the abundance ofU and Th in the Northampton Block granulites, which are thus seen to be credible as source rocks for the ore lead.

The Division of Minerals and Geochemistry in collaboration with three mineral exploration companies, Mawson Pacific Ltd, Ramsgate Resources Ltd and Tectonic Systems Pty Ltd commenced a two year research project to investigate the application of remote sensing techniques to exploration for mineral deposits in access of the Yilgarn Block in Western Australia. The project utilizes satellite data such as day and night imagery from the NOAA-AVHRR (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) satellite. The recent research with the imagery in the Kalgoorlie, Southern Cross and Mt Magnet regions has highlighted the advantages of the mid infra-red and the two thermal response channels of NOAA-AVHRR for geological investigations. These three channels have the spectral resolution to distinguish stratigraphic units and younger intrusive bodies, and to delineate fracture zones and shear zones associated with Proterozoic dykes. But most important is the capacity to distinguish thermal signatures from geological structure, near-surface outcrop and palaeochannels which have been covered by unconsolidated sediments. The research project applies remote sensing methods including enhanced satellite imagery optimised to the Western Australian environment. It encompasses data from both space and airborne monitoring platforms that have obsreved a significant spectral response for the classification of alteration zone lithologies. It includes the collection of multiseasonal data from areas of interest which is essential both for the understanding of thermal characteristics of important lithologies and for the extrapolation from field work investigation to potential exploration areas. No comprehensive investigation of this type has been carried out within the Yilgarn goldfields.

Large-scale infrastructure construction needs to comprehensively manage risks that can impact the health and well-being of many people, from workers (temporary, contracted or full time), to families and surrounding communities. This paper starts with an analysis of incidents (injury, fatality, other damage) in tunnel construction between 2000 and 2014 and assesses the distribution of these events by continent, year, and severity of outcomes. These incidents are then analysed and mapped to a framework of hazards derived from RISKGATE (2014). A comparative register of current tunnel construction risk management guidance is derived from current Australian codes of practice and this register is also mapped to the RISKGATE framework of hazards to identify where coal industry knowledge may offer utility to the tunnelling industry.An initiative of the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP), RISKGATE is an interactive online risk management system developed to assist the mining industry in implementing continual improvement in the management of major unwanted events. To date, a comprehensive knowledge base has been captured for risk management of tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives, outbursts, coal bumps and bursts, human/machine interface, manual tasks, slips/trips/falls, inrush and occupational hygiene. By capturing operational knowledge from industry experts, RISKGATE provides a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover in the coal industry.This paper proposes and outlines how knowledge within the RISKGATE platform could be applied to managing the significant health and safety risks associated with tunnelling. The authors suggest that to varying degrees the knowledge already captured in RISKGATE is likely to be transferable to tunnelling construction operations. Eimco Great Britain, a division of Baker Mining Equipment Company, was contracted to develop a hardrock tunnelling machine in conjunction with British Coal. The objective: a machine to cut rock up to 170 MPa compressive strength yet retaining the flexibility of roadheader type machines. This flexibility to encompass mobility, wide range of excavation shapes and sizes, simplicity of design and use, compact size, and efficient cutting operation. Current roadheaders operating in hard material are characterized by: 1. Severe machine vibration 2. Bouncing of the boom away from the rock 3. Very high pick wear 4. Inability to sump head in bad floor conditions The reasons for this poor performance can be attributed in part to: 1. High speed of cutting head rotation 2. Inability to hold boom against rock while cutting variable hardness strata. To overcome the problems described, a new articulation method was developed utilizing four hydraulic rams to "lock" the boom in position on one axis and four hydraulic motors to rotate the boom for cutting via a turret arrangement. The slide mounted turret is hydraulically advanced for sumping into the face, independent of the machine base. To transfer cutting forces back to the rock, the machine base is held rigidly in the excavation by floor to roof or side to side rams. A cutting head mounted on the boom rotates at very low speed, but with very high torque.

In 2005, Glass Earth Limited (GEL) commissioned two large area detailed airborne geophysical programmes in the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ). In the first survey Bell Geospace Ltd of Scotland conducted an Air-FTG« (airborne Full Tensor Gravity Gradiometry) survey covering 2338km2 at 300m line spacing. The second survey by UTS Geophysics, Australia included detailed airborne magnetic, radiometric and digital terrain data capture covering 5341km2 at 150m line spacing.   From the detailed geophysical data collected it is possible to identify major deeply penetrative crustal structures within the TVZ, as well as define subsurface geological features, such as intrusive bodies and alteration zones. These major deep crustal structures are thought to have a controlling influence on the distribution of epithermal gold mineralising systems, and along the corridors defined by these deep crustal zones, the chances of discovery of an economic epithermal gold discovery are greatly increased.   In this paper GEL gives some examples of the application of its integrated data driven approach to exploration in the TVZ at both regional and project scale. The paper focuses on how GEL identifies regional scale highly prospective deep crustal structures. Then, using the Horohoro epithermal gold system as an example, we show how GEL applies innovative geological and geophysical data processing to model and understand detailed subsurface geology, focusing subsequent exploration to ensure the best opportunity for a new economic epithermal gold discovery.

The countercurrent gas-solid-heat transfer during the drying of brown coal briquettes in the pilot carbonization plant at Morwell has been analysed and theoretical gas and solid temp-erature distributions through the drier have been calculated. Although the calculations rest on several simplifying assump-tions, to be corrected as the experimental work develops, the theoretical temperature distributions compare well with those observed in practical operation. Valuable conclusions are reached as to the effects of changes in drier operating con-ditions on the rate of drying of the briquettes which-controls the 2 strength of the char produced. The analysis shows why a limitation was reached in the improvement of char-strength in the pilot plant in 1961 and a prediction is made of ' a way ' in ' which the limitation could be overcome.

Rarely do opportunities arise allowing closure of a mine site to be planned as a key beneficial land use asset within a new urban growth area; particularly so well prior to cessation of mining.Pit lakes are common mine closure legacies for many open cut mines and may form in open cut mine voids extending below the water table upon closure. Mine closure guidelines increasingly require post-mining land uses of equivalent capacity to premining conditions and that minimise long-term post-mining liabilities and maximise benefits to stakeholders and the environment. However, risks presented by pit lakes are regularly neglected in closure planning or are not able to be addressed to allow beneficial end use of the lake or surrounding land.This paper describes strategic planning initiated by quarry owners ten years before mining ceases. In liaison with the planning agencies, the planned closure of a large 100-year-old limestone quarry pit will form a lake on mine completion, with a well-considered beneficial end use in an urban setting in mind. The quarry pit and adjoining land at Batesford South about the edge of the City of Greater Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Geelong is experiencing growth pressures that necessitate development of a new growth area from about 2025.A multidisciplinary expert team assessed the constraints, opportunities and feasibility of rehabilitating the quarry and pit lake and developing the surrounding land as Geelong’s next urban growth area.The concept is exciting and demonstrates that a former mine site could become a valued home to about 40 000–45 000 people. About 30 per cent of the land will also be developed as an ecological riverine corridor including the pit lake that will become a regionally iconic lake as the centrepiece of an urban development.Our paper outlines technical challenges and how these can be met to achieve closure and beneficial use that meets the social, economic and environmental expectations of contemporary urban planning.CITATION:Gerner, M and McCullough, C?D, 2014. The paper describes a geostatistical structural analysis of an 80 square mile lease of the Athabasca tar sands. Each step of the analysis is presented with the ultimate objective of condensing the principal structural characteristics of the chosen regionalised variables into the opera- tional form of the variogram model. The variogram model is then used to form kriged local and global estimates, with the corresponding estimation errors.

The recent re-emergence of an Integral Pressure Stripping system which operates with both cell and column in closed circuit at elevated temperature and pressure, requires no cyanide in the eluate solution and has greatly reduced carbon reactivation requirements in seen as a progressive step in this area. Several of these re-configured IPS systems have been placed in service in Australia and overseas in the last three years, with the first of the new generation units constructed and commissioned by Como Engineers Pty. Ltd. at Mt. Fisher in the East Murchison of W.A. in September 1987. This plant was relocated to a new ore body at Darlot W.A. in February 1989. Use is made of a data base of raw plant performance figures from both Mr. Fisher and Darlot and its performance compared with other operating plants. Initial commissioning difficulties of the Mt. Fisher prototype and dis- cussed together with the modifications and operational procedures required to overcome these problems. Stripping times of less than 6 hours at 145 degrees have been achieved with barren carbon values less than l O ppm from loaded carbon values above 3000 ppm and with cell pass efficiencies reaching 90 per cent.

A study of high pressure rolls grinding of a number of Australian ores and minerals has been carried out using a pilot-scale machine with rolls 300 mm diameter and 70 mm wide. The results from this study have been used in conjunction with plant survey data to construct computer simulation models of various comminution circuits and these have been used to investigate options for incorporating high pressure grinding rolls into these comminution circuits. Possible rolls options for three of these circuits are presented, and likely energy savings over the existing circuits are discussed together with potential improvements in plant throughput and/or product sizing. A scale-up procedure for predicting full-scale machine performance from small-scale testing is described, and the effects of rolls operating conditions are also discussed.
